Solid prof! He makes his Powerpoint lectures engaging, cracks jokes, and its clear he cares about his students success. He offers tons of opportunities for bonus marks, uses clear essay rubrics, is a fair grader, and the midterm & final are completely multiple choice -- if you do the homework you will definitely do well and even enjoy 1115.
This professor is such a clumsy person. He didn't teach at all. You need to study on your own because he just read through ppt. The exams were all written and calculated questions. (He gave us practice question before the test, but not any correct answer key. In fact, it was helpful, but there was no chance to know that we did wrong.)
Ivan is a very kind professor. If you study well you can get a pretty good grade. There was a film-club in the course. We had two assignments as psychological analysis of the films of the club. They were really fun to do and made you learn the subject. I am glad that I have been in Ivan's section. I would prefer him for the next course.
well meaning, needs to read emails better.
Pisanty is one of those professors that makes it apparent he cares about you. He is accommodating depending on your circumstance, his lectures are easy to understand, and he gives clear rubrics on how to get an excellent grade on his assignments. I highly recommend taking Pisanty's class. He has a cool accent too.
Taking psy 1115 with Ivan has been an absolute breeze! You can tell he cares about what hes teaching and about you as a student. There are group projects but you have the whole semester to do them and only one midterm and final that isnt cumulative! Ivan has such a nice personality and you feel comfortable asking him questions! I want him again!
I took this class two semesters ago and Ivan is a great teacher, his lectures are pretty long each week but thats because he explains the topics in depth. You have the option to do the projects in groups or alone which is nice. Also all the assignments are super fun to do and lets you apply your knowledge in an interesting way.
Marks a little bit hard but helps you if you need help outside of class. Has group projects but you can do them on your own.
I loved this class! Ivan kept it interesting. Ivan teaches clearly and he gives lots of examples to make you better understand. He likes questions during lecture, he may not finish the material because he cares to answer all the questions, if not pertinent Ivan tells you to book an appointment. I raccomand him to all. And the assignements are fun!
Having Dr. Ivan for research methods was amazing. Despite the class being difficult within itself, Ivan always provided clear and detailed feedback so you can improve. I recommend taking PSYC 2320 with him if you get the chance because he makes the lectures and projects "easy" to partake in because of his love for Psychology!
He is really caring and nice and would explain stuff as many times as it takes for students to understand it. I would definitely take another class with him. Unlike many other profs, he genuinely cares about his students.
Ivan is super nice and makes it really clear what you need to study as he bases his tests on the lecture notes in class, although he does tend to ramble on occasion. I also thought that the course material was pretty easy to learn overall. Most of the difficulty in the course comes from the term-long group project.
To say Ivan is a great professor is an understatement. He cares about his students a lot and is willing to answer questions either in or outside of the class. He gives great examples and you can see his passion for psychology shine through his lectures. Definitely recommend him!
Ivan made learning about the history of psychology very interesting! He shows a lot of passion when teaching the course, and you will truly appreciate how we got to have the field of psychology that we know of in this present day. Ivan is great with students, loves to get the class engaged.
A great professor, he is always willing to help you via email or office hours. Very good at explaining points made, very passionate. Truly a great professor for a psychology major, he will make you want you to know more about psychology and understand the material on your own time
I loved being in his class but I will say that his lectures can be boring and long. But he's overall a great teacher
Absolutely amazing professor, teaches well, you learn the entire course by just doing the homework, all open book, impossible to not get an A in this course
Ivan goes over all material during class, if you attend and listen you don`t even need to read a textbook at all. Exams also based in his slides. Ivan is a good grader, I got 90+ for all assignments. Group research is key in this course - worth 40%, he is always willing to help and give ideas for it. Ivan randomly takes attendance (worth 5%).
All lectures are copy of book, you do not learn more from class. Professor not provide enough example and explanations to understand the subject, you should try to understand it yourself, so he is not professional and knowledgeable. Also, his lectures are confusing( his first language is not English and difficulty in accent). Lastly, not caring!
The instructor claims that he has a lot of experience, but after a few class sessions, you see that this is just a claim. I could not believe it. He gives less content description; lectures that are textbook copies. Not caring students, not fair
Tough grading. Not caring. Lectures are not effective because of copy books! His class does not help to understand the concept of the course because his explanations are very confusing! Overall, his class was the worst experience I have ever had. I will never take any courses with him. I do not recommend his class...
The lectures can be boring, but the tests aren't difficult as the material being covered can ALL be found on the lecture slides (textbook isn't needed tbh). The group project is worth 40% of your grade, and the assignments within it can be a bit challenging (his guidelines lack detail), although he is very approachable and happy to help if needed!
Not caring, hard grading
not clear his lectures because go his accent. Also, he does not understand the student at all and not caring. I don't recommend him of you want to get good credit! In fact, he grades tough and his not fair in grading group assignments and projects!
He has not expressed instructor. Actually, he does not know how to deal with students! Hard grading and not fair!
Tough grading, worse lectures!
Not recommended him if you want good credit. I will never take a class with him!
He is semi-helpful, but his expectations of group projects are too unrealistic. His guides in projects are getting more confusing, he doesn't seem like a good instructor. Tough exams and give short time to answer questions. He speaks with an accent, thus making it difficult to understand him. His lectures are so boring ! He is not recommended!
Not recommended!
Not fair grading not recommended!
Not good for taking high credit because of tough grading!
Possibly one of the most amazing profs you could ever ask for in a research methods class. He will push you very hard, but he will be there with you every step of the way. He gave feedback at 11:00 pm on a Friday and was always encouraging students to come see him in office hours. I learned more with Ivan than any other course at Langara. 11/10
Ivan is truly an exceptional educator, especially for a research methods class. His commitment to pushing students to excel is matched by incredible support every step of the way. From providing feedback late at night to always encouraging students to come to office hours. Really nice guy. Also he will speak in Spanish with you if you want.
He let me audit the course and participate in a group research project. I owe him so much for everything he taught me. Really one of the best profs I have ever met. I learned so much. Taking his neuroscience course next term.
Prof. Trujillo-Pisanty works tirelessly, always going the extra mile. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students, both academically and personally. His passion shines through in lectures, making the tough stuff easier to grasp. Super approachable, and his feedback is gold. If you have the chance to take his class DO IT!
This course is quite hard but Ivan is fun, encouraging and one of the best professors I encounter so far. He is very invested on his profession and students success therefore I recommend his courses. He will give you confidence and skills that you never thought possible to acquire. Be ready for lots of homework and content.
He takes effort to make his students to learn and succeed in his class.
I am thrown off by the other reviews, I didn't find this prof as great as the other reviews made him out to be. He was not engaging in his lectures as they were quite dry. Lectures weren't structured coherently, and exams grades did not seem to reflect actual understanding. Marking of the project was unfair and he never provided criteria prior.
Grading of the project was unfair! He was not professional in his lectures because they are all copy and paste from textbooks. His explanations often confused the group about the problems and challenges of the group project and did not help us. I did not see him as perfect as others wrote about him.
Not recommended him if you need a high credit for this course..
Dr. Ivan Trujillo-Pisanty is a very knowledgeable and caring instructor. I took PSYC1115 with him before, this is my second time in his class. I really learnt a lot in his class. Highly recommended!
Dr. Ivan is an amazing professor, his courses are student-centred and he tries to ask always about how we are feeling, if during the lecture it was too much content, so he can explain it again. I had taken 2320 and 2332 with him, and those are hard courses, but if you try to understand the content and read the book you are going to succeed!!!
I feel that there are some bad comments about his grading, but it is because he usually teach heavy content courses, like research methods, in which you have to repeat and repeat again to get the final project, so of course he has to give feedback to you in order to improve, but it isn't difficult to get good grades with him, so just try.
He's one of the best teachers in Langara college! Very fair and always there to give help to students. People don't give him enough credit than he deserves!
Heavy project and I did not find him helpful . not recommended him
awesome teacher! Many opportunities to do well in the class. Super nice and understanding. one of the best psychology teacher i met so far. Take him! The kahoots makes the classes so engaging. Love how he also posted video lessons online, great way to review if we are sick or miss something in class. Very great teacher!
Great prof, good lecturer, grades fair and wants students to learn
Best prof I had at Langara by far. Unlike so many other profs, during class, he actually explains textbook concepts. And he knows how to write an exam - you actually have to understand the material to do well. Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy grade, but if you are a serious student and you really want to learn, you will love it.
Took his class as an elective. I do not really like science related courses however I enjoyed his class as I learned so much from his lectures. He is funny and teaches well try not to miss his lectures even though it is not mandatory. One of the best prof in langara.
Prof. Ivan is just incredible. One of the smartest and hardest working profs at Langara, tries so hard to give students a fun time and a full education. I have taken his classes before and I would always recommend him, but know that he will make you work and learn and participate. Love this prof!
Mr. Ivan had a lot of activities which is good for students to make up for marks instead of relying purely on exams. The tests actually had a pretty small weight distribution. Just catch up with readings, best to show up to class always, and work hard, and you'll be fine! He may seem strict but he just wants to help you. He's pretty funny too lol
Ivan is devoted to his classes and wants to ensure that you comprehend the material. He is amusing, caring, and brilliant in his delivery. His genuineness and passion leave you feeling inspired at the end of each class. Expect to work hard and have a lot of fun. His courses are hard, but his personality motivates you to succeed.
not recommended, he is not professional...
very difficult and heavy course. He is not helpful ...
Ivan is a great professor! He explains concepts with clarity, and gives lots of opportunities for extra credit!
Really the best you could ask for in a course that demands so much. Prof. TP is funny, works hard and gives his absolute best when he teaches. For sure take this course with him.
One of the best profs I have ever had at Langara. Def take a course with him if you can and if you are interesting in psych
I had such a great time in his intro class. He really cares about teaching. Take his course if you can!
I'm part way through my course with Dr. Trujillo-Pisanty - Applied Behavioural Neuroscience - and I am so excited by his teaching style. He puts in 100%. The subject matter is very intense compared to other psych courses, but at least you learn something.
Ivan is a relatively good lecturer, however lectures are not very engaging and could be percieved as somewhat bland. He is very strict on no sleeping in class and cheating to a point where it could be percieved as a bit excessive. For example, if you are caught sleeping you will be kicked out and if you cheat, he will not treat that as a warning.
He seems to attract eager students who like his aggressive style towards learning. The class is packed so far, and everybody shows up. He teaches for 3 hours and people are still engaged. Very hard course but worth the time.
Boring lectures only sometimes but when he gets excited about the material he starts to excite everyone.
This professor had an unprofessional and inconsiderate attitude after I came by his office to discuss a poorly setup online exam . I would not recommend taking any of his classes. The material presented in the lectures is uninteresting and derivative. His final grading for the research projects was disproportionate.
He was there for us when we were struggling and I think it's his attitude and feedback that got us to a successful project. If you are a keener, looking to excel, take a class with Ivan
Would rate him higher if he wasn't so power trip heavy. All lectures are prerecorded, but you have to do kahoots in lecture for a participation mark. Easy to get a grade though as long as you do all the assignments. Beware of sudden jumpscares in lecture, he yells randomly/makes sudden noises to prove points about certain topics in psychology.
He is nice if you do the work. A great instructor, but he sometimes leaves things unexplained, which makes it difficult to follow when the next topics build on the previous ones. The textbook was required but the course work can be done without it as his exams are based on the slides alone anyways. Participate and he will like you! VeryKnowledgable
The lectures are pre-recorded and I did not find it useful. He is not a knowledgeable professor because he only read from PowerPoint. Also, he has an accent, so make sure you're a good listener. His lecture was boring and ridiculous. Importantly, his grading for group project was not fair
His lectures are not engaging and he talks about one topic for a long time with way too many examples that are irrelevant. His slides are not good so I would just read the textbook and take my own notes. Course is okay if you want to learn by yourself and just show up for class to do the kahoots but if you like being taught I wouldn't recommend
Ivan is a great prof and fair. If you show up and put in the work you will succeed. He wants his students to learn and succeed. He will support you along the way. He try's to make difficult content as interesting and engaging as he can.
Lectures are okay, extremely fair, probably the best prof for this course. Do prepare your ears though he likes to scream(I'm serious literally scream).
Ivan was a great professor who really cares about his students learning. TALK TO HIM!!! You don't have to have big questions, you can just chat with him or ask for clarification on topics. He's very friendly and is easily accessible during office hours. Willing to help or stay after lectures, just ask. 10/10 great prof. Hoping to have him again :)
I like attending his class, his lectures and the topic itself is interesting. I like how he does the examsas. he seems caring and wishes the students to pass as what i can feel. He's a nice prif and if only i could've exerted more effort towards his class, i'll get a better grade but overall i would take his classes again
He was so kind, but sometimes he screamed during class that made me wake up
His lectures are all pre recorded and he has this annoying habit of raising his voice, literally screaming out of nowhere trying make a point.
I barely passed, and I still don't know what I learned. Everything felt so fragmented. There was no flow, no logic, just random facts and stress. I walked out of the final feeling nothing but relief. Worst academic experience I've had.
The lectures didn't match the slides, and the slides didn't match the tests. It was a total mess. I literally couldn't rely on anything this prof said. I hated this class more than all my other classes
There was one time when he kind of seemed irritated when someone asked for help. I get that he was probably busy at that moment but the energy he gave created a really uncomfortable environment. We're here to learn.. we shouldn't feel bad for asking questions. It made me shut down. I stopped participating altogether. 4/10
I'm not gonna lie, I'm honestly really disappointed. I wanted to love psych, but this prof turned me off completely. The teaching was sooo boring and everything was unclear, and the grading felt random. If i were given a chance, i wouldn't take him again.
It honestly felt like he was trying to confuse us. Every lecture had unrelated tangents, and the key points were buried. I had to reteach everything myself after class. I've never worked so hard to get so little out of a course. So disappointing.
Prof Pisanty's tone can be extremely dismissive. Whenever it was time for students to ask questions, he would often brush them off or acted irritated. It made it hard to speak up or ask for help. It really killed the learning environment. I felt small and unwelcome.
He assigns sooooo much work for an intro class. Textbook readings, loooong lectures, extra videos, all with little to no connection to the actual exams. I was drowning in assignments. It took up so much of my time compared to my other classes. I have to say that i regret enrolling.
His pre recorded lectures were all over the place. There was no clear takeaway, he never summarized or highlighted what was important. I remember leaving class every week with pages of notes and no idea what mattered. It was mentally exhausting. Not the best prof if you want to keep your GPA high.
The exams were a nightmare. It focused on the tiniest details and skipped over the main concepts. It felt like he was always trying to trip us up, and not really assess what we understood which is what a good professor would do.
Nothing in this course was explained clearly. I kept waiting for things to “click” but they never did. His lectures never line up with the textbook or exams. I felt like I was constantly guessing what to study. There was no direction the entire semester. Bad teacher.
He talks either way too SLOW or way too FAST, and he often gets off track with personal stories. I couldn't stay focused in class, it was impossible because the delivery was so inconsistent. It's hard to stay engaged when the pacing keeps changing. I started skipping because I wasn't learning anything. His teaching style doesn't work for me at all
The workload was honestly unmanageable for an intro class. We were expected to read, watch lectures, then be tested on completely different info. Nothing aligned and it was overwhelming. It felt like I was studying 3 courses worth of material for just this one. If you want a good prof/course, you better look elsewhere!
he made it feel like we were wasting his time when we asked for help. Honestly, I've had more support in classes twice as hard. This class is not worth the stress. Trust.
he assigns heavy readings and expects us to sit through long lectures but then none of it shows up on the exam. What a total fkn waste of time.
This was supposed to be an intro class. Instead, it felt like advanced psych with none of the guidance or support. Completely unfair to first-years. I'd prefer any other prof but him, also because he can be irritating when he yells to make his point. Not professional at all.
Most of the time, he would spend half the lecture talking about his personal life, then rush through actual content like we were supposed to already know it all. It was pretty exhausting.
Want me to be honest? NOTHING in the lectures align with the textbook or the exam. I was always guessing what to study. I did every reading, watched every lecture, and still felt unprepared for every test. Please, choose any other prof. I'm only telling you this because thats what i wished somebody warned me. DO NOT TAKE HIM. You can do better
he's truly amazing, I don't understand the bad reviews. - he teaches students habits - like being on time - to ensure we can succeed in the future. - he's available outside of class and is there to for support when we reach out - fair grader for sure
While he seems knowledgeable, his teaching style didn't work for me. Lectures often felt rushed or unclear, and there wasn't much guidance on what to focus on for exams. Students who prefer more structured support might struggle.
He is notoriously hard to reach outside of class. Emails often go unanswered, and he offers minimal support for students who genuinely need extra help. It feels like he's indifferent to those struggling, which made the course unnecessarily stressful.
Memorization is heavily prioritized over comprehension, and any minor slip-up is severely penalized. It feels more like a test of perfection than learning.
Felt like I was teaching myself the whole course. He barely answers emails, exams are brutal, and lectures don't line up with textbook. No flexibility or effort to reach struggling students. Unfair if you're not his favorite.
Being smart doesn't make you a good teacher. I felt like he only cared about the top 10% of the class. The rest of us were just statistics to weed out. There was no space to ask questions without feeling dumb, and no recognition that students come from different educational backgrounds and face different challenges.
His lectures were disorganized and way too fast for any real learning to happen. The way he explains things is not accessible unless you already have a strong background in the subject. If you ask questions, he makes you feel like you should've already known the answer.
This professor has a very obvious “type” of student he engages with usually the ones who already sound like him or think like him. If you're quieter, learn differently, or ask too many questions, you're ignored. The rest of us were treated like background noise.
The workload was heavy, but what made it worse was how unclear everything was. Expectations changed, instructions were vague, and you couldn't count on lectures or readings to guide you. And when your grade came back way lower than expected, there was no transparency. Just “you didn't meet the standard,” with no clue what the standard was.
As someone who didn't come from a strong math or logic background, I walked into this course ready to work hard. What I wasn't ready for was a professor who made absolutely no effort to meet students where they're at. He speaks fast, skips steps in explanations, and when you ask questions, he answers in ways that make you feel stupid.
He talks fast, uses overly technical language, and speeds through slides with zero pause to explain. You can tell he's smart, but he teaches like he's bored of having to explain things. If you're struggling, you get the sense that he doesn't think you belong in the program.
His grading doesn't reward effort, it rewards precision and perfection. You either get it or you don't. And if you don't? You get cooked.
Every week, more and more students stopped showing up. Not because they were lazy, but because they were overwhelmed and discouraged. The course structure seemed designed to make students fail unless they already had prior exposure to the material.
As someone who speaks English as a 2nd language, this class was really hard to follow. He speaks quickly and uses complicated words without explaining them well. At times I didn't understand his lectures at all, and the textbook didn't help because the language was very technical. When I emailed questions, I rarely got a helpful reply.
I signed up for this class excited but quickly regretted it. The material felt way too advanced and overwhelming for a first-year student. Ivan expects you to learn everything on your own, with barely any guidance. His exams don't reflect what's taught in class, and the feedback is almost non-existent.
His pre-recorded lectures and PowerPoints often have little to no connection to what appears on the exams. Assignments feel unrelated to the textbook, and the course as a whole is disorganized and confusing. Nothing lines up, what he teaches, assigns, and tests are all different. The only way to stay on track is to rely strictly on the textbook.
Ivan's class is one of my easiest ones of all 3 courses. Not too much homework. Just do your achieve, come to class, it's very easy to get A in his class. He seems tough but he actually cares for his students. 100%go for it and I literally don't know why he has bad grading
Ivan's an okay prof if you manage your time, finish all the work, and do well on exams. But don't expect that much support as he's not that accessible and doesn't adapt to different learning styles. Students who do well often have psych or science backgrounds. The bad reviews are real; the positive ones feel like teacher's pets.
Wastes time with personal stories, then crams the real content at the end. Exams are mostly on the rushed parts and “optional” readings. He doesn't explain anything clearly. He uses big words from the textbook but doesn't break them down so we can understand. The practice questions he gives us are nothing like the test questions.
I really enjoyed this class it was fascinating to learn about psychology from someone so enthusiastic about the subject. He was very approachable, and I could almost always get help from him after class
Best psychology professor. So easy to get As.
Take him, he is an amazing professor. It is easy to get A's like another person said below me.
I highly recommend taking one of his classes. Fairly easy to achieve an A in his class as long as you review the lectures and finish all assignments you'll be good to go. Reading research papers were probably the only annoying part on this course. Overall, if you're debating on whether or not you should take his course i'd say just do it!!
The course was very difficult to follow. The professor's accent made lectures hard to understand, especially for students facing language challenges. Too much time was spent on unrelated personal stories instead of key concepts. Responses to questions were often dismissive and disrespectful. I don't recommend him.
Professor is a pretty cool guy. Class is actually and easy A as long as you show up and study the material. I've had him for a couple years now and highly recommend!
Bad. Very unhelpful and does not care or have empathy for students. Honestly wasted my time and money on his course. Beware.
Lecture does get kind of boring because of all the information. But Ivan is a good prof. I'm looking at a lot of these reviews and disagree. If you have an issue outside of the classroom then let him know he WILL help you. But if you are being lazy or bs-ing then you should re-evaluate your decision making!
Most of the learning ends up happening on your own through the textbook, and his lecture slides often repeat the content without adding much clarity or explanation. There's also very limited opportunity to improve your grade. There are very few assignments, and all exams are multiple-choice and taken in person on the computer.
He made me cry on my birthday
Great prof. He's funny and engaging during lectures, and cares about his students. He's strict with his policies but fair. If you pay attention and do your best you'll do fine. He also allows you to redo quizzes, midterms AND FINALS like that's crazy, take advantage of that! Keep in mind some wording during tests can be confusing.
His enthusiasm and love for psychology is so nice to see. The lectures were interesting and engaging. He always encourages us to ask questions and never makes us feel dumb for asking. It's easy to get a good grade if you study and do the work. The wording on exams can be confusing at times :( Luckily you can retake the quizzes and exams at home!
Ivan clearly loves teaching the subject he's passionate about, which is the best thing one can ask for in a prof. He is enthusiastic, well-prepared, approachable and wants his students to learn.
PROS: Humorous, cares about some students, clear about rules (follow the syllabus), and every test/midterm/exam allows 2nd attempt CONS: He does call you out if you're late or sleeping in class and WILL yell (no excuses), does random pop kahoots in lectures, not enough assignments to improve your grade
I really enjoyed this class overall. The professor is genuinely funny and clearly seems passionate about what he teaches. It's easy to get a good grade as long as you're willing to put in the work. I highly recommend reading the Achieve textbook, as it's pretty relevant to the course material. Just DONT fall asleep in class. He will call you out.
