This prof was SO easy! The material also really great! But his slides are a bit unorganized, but that's okay. To get A: Essay - easiest thing ever! Just agree with the author, Participation - talk in dgd to get this mark, MT - pure regurgitation!, FInal - exactly like the MT, but somehow the essay was easier. G'luck! This prof is highly recommended
I was really looking foward to the politics of globalization class, and prof. Grouev is making me second guess if this is what I truly want to pursue in University. I look foward to taking another Poli/Sci class however I don't know if my initial interest can fully be retored
Alright prof, marks incredibly easy as long as what you have to say either supports his opinion or is anti-American. Accent is thick, but not impossible to understand. Says vis-a-vis and etc about once every other sentence. Also pretty disorganized...for example, he did a lecture one week, then started doing the exact same one again the next week.
not the greatest out there!
Very biased, but interesting just the same. VERY anti-american, showed alot of anti-american propaganda (fox news, conspiracy theories, etc). Bulgarian accent but not hard to understand at all. Wasnt open to anyone elses opinions. Content dry at some points.
He needs to learn how to prep for classes so that he is not constantly tripping over his words, and might sometimes give his student credit for their intelligence instead of always assuming that we know nothing about the subject matter. Plus, he might actually want to try giving his students some repect by showing up on time or maybe even early!
At firt I really hated his teaching method (asking questions at random, while expecting you to know everything), but then I slowly began to appreciate it. He was trying make us take a stand on today's politics (ie War in Iraq). He is VERY easy on essay marking and midterms/exam are regurgitation of the class notes & opinions on readings.
Lectures were not very clear vis-a-vis his lecture slides were useless. Exams fairly straight forward if you just memorize his notes whether they make sense or not. Essay was difficult as the book we had to use was not very good. very left wing! But like i said exams were straight forward and easy marks for discussion groups.
Very hard to understand him sometimes.
This prof is interesting if you want to know random facts about potitics. He is unbelievably disorganized, but if you memorize his slides then you will get a good grade on the exams...but don't expect to learn anything...
Has a thick Eastern European accent. Very Anti-American when it comes to his point of view. His slide shows are disorganized and he seems distracted most of the time. But hes very willing to help you if you need help and is very linear. Exams and papers are essay if you get a hang of them. Not a hard marking.
One of the best professors not just on campus but in the city of Ottawa.
Ohh Grouev. I recommend the class just so you can say you had him--but for no other reason than that. Very confusing and you end up with incomprehensible notes. You'll learn some interesting facts that are unfortunately useless once you leave the classroom and enter the real world.
Sadly unable to mark properly
He clearly cares about the class, but is very unorganized. He will never give a straight answer, but is very willing to help after class. Both the midterm and the exam were on the slides and one or two of the readings. Just memorise the slides and you should be fine.
Prof. Grouev had a very deep backgroud in politics and teaches his students from many different perspectives. I learned alot in his class, however, he is terribly unorganized.
thanks grouev, inspiring! and much enjoyed cheers
If you litterally memorize the slides you'll get an A on the exams. Exams are very clear and he tells you exactly what to know. His lectures aren't great. They are scattered and he doesn't really make much sense when he lectures. His stories are kind of pointless and his answers to questions are always rather vague. Overall ok.
His summer course was easy and he was very easy with regards to grades. Overall I believe he is a good prof, however he does often mistake his own beliefs for those of others.
Very odd. Could be a great class but he was very incoherent and all over the place. Little focus on International Relations just jibber jabber about American Imperialism and the cost of the Iraq war. Very nice guy though!
wierd prof, foe some reason i just dont like him and his class. paper was quite easy. midterm and final are relatively easy too, memorization was very helpful.
makes you feel like an idiot. don't raise your hand.....ever.
intriguing lecture, relaxed(show respect and you will get it) may be hard in criticism but fair and allows for talk after class . all in all ,he is knowledgeable of the subject and is very enthused by it and that seeps through to after class discussions. Some of the films are disturbing, but a good medium as they bring issues front center.
I loved this class! Professor Grouev is interesting, he challanges you to think differently, the only thing is if you do not attend class then you will miss out. Those that seem to have a problem with his teaching have a hard time because they do not attend lectures. It's too bad because they are missing out!!
Admittedly, I did not understand a word of what he said on the lecture, but his slides were amazing. I was drowsing most of the times in his class, too. For the exam, regurgitate his slides (for they sum up his lectures -- I think -- anyway).
Overall, good prof. He was relatively approachable, was understanding when approached for an extension and made the occasional hilarious joke. Sometimes hard to understand, he would often ask a question and never answer it, telling all those who tried that they were wrong. Pretty chill class.
Prof Grouev is awesome! He's clearly a brilliant man! Also makes awesome jokes!! Sometimes he's hard to understand, but then again, who isn't. I'd rather have a prof who is scattered and knows his stuff than a prof who reads his/her slides verbatim.
oh grouev. He thinks he's morpheus from the matrix. he wants to impose his views on students and will mark you unfairly if you dont agree with him. smart man, BAD prof. the readings will blow your mind though. its a shame he doesnt discuss them enough in class.
hilarious guy!
Wow, what can I say about Prof G? Well he is a very intelligent man but he is crazy. Very scruffy, knocks the telephone off the podium 3 times per class, and doesn't agree with anyone who's view is different from his. Extremely anti-American. all his slides are against the U.S. He has weird habits and i can't approach him for fear of laughing.
very vague and unclear but quite a character. don't expect to learn anything. his class is a stage for his propaganda. a student asked him in class, "sir our ayllabus says that we were supposed to have a dgd on January 28th (now March) worth 10%. what about those marks?" response "Um, yes, um well... ok. discussion will be on date on syllabus"
With Prof Grouev you either love him or hate him! He's a character. Doesn't convey subject matter very effectively but tells interesting stories. Doesn't follow the syllabus and usually forgets about DGDs and guest speaker. For exams his slides must be memorized in order to get a good mark.
Here's the thing - I came to University to learn and have thoughts provoked, not to memorize slides. In Grouev's class, the ONLY way to get a good mark is to agree with everything he says and memorize the slides which is unfortunate. If you put your hand up and disagree with his views he demeans you in the worst way possible and it is embarassing.
This prof is very very arrogant. He thinks he knows everything. If you are not a liberal you will hate this class because he opposes non liberal comments. If you speak up in class and he dissagrees he will make fun of you. Not a hard teacher but i learned nothing.
Despite what some people have posted on here, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed Grouev's course in International Orgs. He approaches the subject matter at hand to make one think critically which in my view benefitted me personally. Would definitely take one with him again.
I have taken 2 courses with Prof. Grouev, and he is an awesome professor. He makes his students think critically about politics. Provides information that you wouldn't find in any text book. And shows you great documentaries. He wants to intellectually challenge his students, and have them question the status quo. Something all profs should do.
He's passionate about what he's saying, and the class definitely had the potential to be incredibly interesting. However, he is condescending to students who have opinions in class. He is incredibly dissorganized, and never follows the syllabus. His exams are unpredictable, and you have to memorize useless information.
Extremely easy class. If you know your stuff and do the readings you're guaranteed an awesome grade. Love his simplicity!
GREAT prof. Yes you need to agree with him in order to get a good mark.. but its not like his views are completly wrong... he talks about real stuff in politics that exists.. He is completly understandable if you have aproblem.. sure hes unorganized but thats why its so great. Hes unbureaucratic and unlike the normal boring professor.Take his class
This class can be so wonderful if the prof did his job. Stop showing clips of the Matrix, John Lennon videos and YouTube videos ridiculing the Americans. This is offensive! We have to buy books he does not refer to. Please...this is not an ANTI AMERICAN CLASS. We need to learn about the material outlined so when taking future classes, we have a goo
THE Ivaylo Grouev IS HARD CORE COMMUNIST AND HE SHOULD MOOVE BACK TO SOFIA.
It is true, Grouev does not do his job. Taking his class is not useless as he opens your eyes for a lot of things that other professors would not do. First years... take him but second year students + plus dont BOTHER. Also, if you take him once but bother doing it again, he will talk about the SAME stuff.
Nonsensical dolt!
One of the best profs I've had in the last 5 years at Ottawa U. Those of you who shun him for being real, open, and showing clips know nothing about the real world, and are just here to get your degree and live your lives like sheeple, never actually thinking about the real world.
He's a great prof. He's incredibly biased, and tends to impose his POV on students. I find his POV interesting and tend to agree with it most of the time. He also always thinks he's right.Class attendance isn't really mandatory if you do all the readings and memorize the slides. His midterms are fair, 40% essay for this class.
Classes can be interesting but if you have a question or comment think it through before you open your mouth, tends to embarass people and make them look like idiots. Isn't that helpful. Sometimes he's boring and drones on and tells the same stories. Movies are always interesting but slides usually contain way too much information. Do the readings!
greta teacher really knows what he's talking about. He rambles a bit but he always has a point to get across
His accent makes it hard to understand sometimes but overall, he seemed really passionate about what he does and that's a great quality. Didn't learn much from his rambling but did learn a lot from the course overall.
His lectures are pretty interesting and his exams are fairly easy. You do need to pay a bit more attention to what he is saying because of his accent, though it is not too difficult to understand. He does have a tendency to try to only teach his opinion, so take what he says with a grain of salt. Overall, a decent professor.
Overall interesting material, completely useless as a prof. Extremely unclear with his expectations and explanations, hard to follow, jumps over important slides. Assignments are explained in such an unclear fashion, its a joke.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF...the same slides for each class. This is the third course I have taken with him, and he re-uses slides. Not that it matters, because none of the slides are relevant in any way shape or form to the content of the course. Bring your computer and watch Jersey Shore...FIST PUMP YEEEE. Do the readings and agree with his POV
AMAZING PROF !!!!!!!!
Terrible prof. Lectures are all over the place. Prof does not seem prepared. Goes off topic often. Students must rely on readings to actually learn anything.
Probably the only professor I've had whose classes I look forward to. Not cliche. Extremely topical topics. Very passionate speaker. Good use of youtube. Most profs are cliche and go with textbook talking points. Grouev brings his own stuff. Had a wicked case study on how American empire will end. Obviously has grasp of history.
Really interesting lectures and great use of movies, youtube, etc. Slides are hard to follow and you will never get to copy it all down - readings a must! Very interesting prof, but very opinionated. Has the potential to make you look like an idiot if you answer a question in class.
Had him in first year and contemplating whether I should take his course in 3rd year(Int'l Org).I checked out the course outline online and it's almost identical to the one used in first year, except a different textbook. 50% of the readings are the same and so are a lot of the videos. He just spews his ideas and expects you to regurgitate it back.
Great prof. best I have had so far, well informed, and understanding. Shows very informative clips in class which support his topics.
Oh Grouev, Grouev. Love the accent, and loved the jokes. But there's nothing special about the teaching. I found that he knew what he was talking about, and I found that the midterm and final were exactly what he said they would be.
You cannot like Grouev...Honestly, he is really smart... I loved his class and I still remember what I've learned in it (took the class 2 years ago). Good choice of readings. Still remember them. A+ he's the best
Extremely good professor! Solid knowledge in History and Politics. Brings up interesting and current issues relevent to the course. Guest speakers and great documentaries just show his dedication! Very helpful in office hours, always there for the student. Great speaker! I was looking forward to attending every lecture!
Unique prof! The best prof in Political Science I have had so far. He makes every lecture interesting and challenges you to think outside the box! Makes you think critically, provides priceless information and personal experience, you can`t find in the textbook. He is also very clear on midterm and exam expectations. Take his class!
Not the best for upper level classes. Lectures are useless to attend, its easier to read at home. Smart guy, but only if you talk to him after class (good luck). Unavailable via email, and no posted office hours. Not what you expect from a third yr class. Exams are exactly what he says "No surprises". Readings are a must.
Had him for POL1102 and 3111. Highly recommended, since a lot of the material is repeated. Knows his stuff very well. Be prepared to back up your argument very strongly if you disagree with him. Slides are good for definitions; anything listed in slides should be memorized. MTs and Finals had no surprises. Assignments were actually interesting!
Professor needs to be actually more engaged with the material presented and avoid so much recycling of PPTs. Same jokes, same stories, same mistakes, same use of documentaries. Prof needs to put more effort and proof reading into the material he presents. Students accustomed to guidance better look for another prof.
LOVE HIM! He is amazing and I one of the most interesting profs I have had. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He's got a lot to say and can be interesting but he doesn't stay on topic at all. In fact, I don't even learn much about the actual topic of his classes. We end up learning a lot about the USA politics more than anything, regardless of the class content. Take him if you want an amusing prof/class with an ok to good grade but don't care to learn.
I very much enjoy his class. He has a very neat perspective and is very entertaining. He cares very much for what he's teaching and likes to make sure his students are enjoying what they learn. I reccomend this prof.
This professor is very clear on expectations and as long as you memorize and regurgitate the slides you will get a very good grade. Unfortunately the perspective is radically left wing, lacks any sort of objectivity and relentlessly shovels on left wing propoghanda while lashing out at the right for propghanda use. I found this very hypocritical
Absolutely terrible professor. Agree with everything he says, especially his conspiracy theories, or you'll get a bad mark. I got a poor mark on a paper because I did not agree with him-- and he admitted as much. Terrible.
Terrible professor. A total conspiracy theorist. If you don't agree with his attack on the U.S, best of luck getting a good mark. Cannot (for the life of him) stay on topic; essentially side-tracked the entire time. Students are lost when this happens. His slides are a mess. A nice guy, but for a 3rd year class he's terrible for teaching.
Incoherent, slides are incomprehensible, expectations are unclear.
The Professor offers an excellent course. For those who dislike the course obviously are not thinkers and cannot accept a challenge when faced with one. Out of 36 Pofessors I have had so far, Professor Grouev is in the TOP 2. Take POL 3111 and 3154 as well for an enjoyable learning experience.
Probably the only prof in the entire faculty who cares if his students are learning something. Nice character assassination attempt to all of you degenerate yuppies out there picking on a guy because he has a funny accent. If you want to pick on a professor, there are countless defective French-Canadian poly sci profs with serious pathologies.
The best and funniest professor ever. He actually wants you to learn and be informed with a little "red pill" reality check. Those who label him as a "conspiracy theorist" are not legitimate independent thinkers let alone political scientists.
aaahh...Grouev! He's just too cute to pass up!Repetitive with the themes, yes... but it becomes memetic in the end of it all. An iconic and interesting fellow.
An enjoyable learning experience. Yeah, he skips on the slides a little but he's a fair marker and his expectations for assignments and exams are clear. The documentaries also add context to the course to get us to start thinking a little.
enjoyable experience. Many think if you disagree with him you will fail, i did and still passed. Will go out of his way to Help students having problem in class. Just talk to him and he will help. Also, true he does not stay on topic, but he cares about quality. For those who just care about the A+ grade, he will show u what u need to get it.
Grouev gets a hard time from a lot of students but honestly, the guy is smart, passionate, willing to help, enjoys teaching and beyond fair. He went out of his way on several occassions to accomodate me and never treated me like the student number most of us are. At time he may seem brash, but he is just trying to challenege you, so accept it.
Professor Grouev is a professor that does care about his students...but his slides and lectures don't seem that clear...yet it does seem repetitive such that it becomes boring. I do not recommend doing this course unless you're motivated to learn in this class.
Prof. Grouev is one of the best professors at uOttawa. He strives to challenge students to use their minds to be something better?.greater than mediocrity. He will sincerely care about students? welfare, as opposed to just a requirement of their profession. Definitely a professor that you will remember past your graduation!
I took the Politics of Eastern and Central Europe with Professor Grouev. It was indeed a very pleasant experience and I believe wholeteartedly that Grouev is a real asset to the University of Ottawa. Not only does he exhort students to engage in critical thinking, but he also provides you with both sides as part of his class lectures. Impeccable!
I took Introduction to Politics this summer with this professor. This grentleman is owesome. It was a great experience. This prof really cares about his students. He takes time to try and explain his materials. He presents his material in very simple easy to understand way. This is the prof you will remember for the rest of your life.
Great prof! Super interesting perspectives; Really engaging and interesting, especially in small classes; Had him twice, has a formula, he challenges students to think, which is clearly a challenge for some still? but if your interested in the world, TAKE HIS CLASS - particularly Eastern European Pol - POL 3154
Great prof! extremely smart and a great critical thinker. Some students find him difficult to understand due to the fact that he challenges students to think for themselves and to read between the lines. AMAZING Prof, any of his classes are worth taking, particularly 3111 (International Organizations) and 3154 (European Politics)
I'm not gonna lie I truly learned more in 3 summer courses with Professor Grouev than I have in all 3 years of my undergrad . He not only uses relevant material but also is a very fair marker. Professor Grouev is always ready to address any questions or concerns students might have and he is extremely friendly! You won't regret taking his courses!
Absolutely amazing Prof. and a very fair marker, he opens your eyes to the side of politics you would not learn anywhere else! I wish he would teach 4th year classes, I will truly miss Prof. Grouev
Professor Grouev is one of the only Poli Sci profs at Ottawa U who doesn't rely solely on dry, theoretical approaches and who pushes students to think for themselves. He applies everything to real-world events, making it more relevant and interesting to learn. Exams are straight-forward, do the work and go to class and you'll do well.
Amazing professor! I learned more in this class than all my other classes combines. The professor is very nice, very smart, and really cares about his students! Best professor ever.
Best professor ever! Smart, helpful, and very caring.
One of the best profs I have ever had. I have no poli sci background whatsoever and took a summer course with him out of personal interest. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, and pushes students to think outside the box. I loved the class and would highly recommend him as a prof!
He is the most amazing prof, extremely intelligent and always ready to help students. I had 3 classes with him and I only wish he taught 4th year courses because I would be the first to register! I learned more in his classes than I did in my 3 years as an undergrad put together!
He was a good prof for the subject and had a different spin on politics, and I agree that he is compassionate and willing to help his students. But I found it to be true too, if you disagree with him, even with valid reasoning, your chances of doing well in the class go down
Not a really good professor. Makes you participate in class although students don't want to go against his opinions. Lectures don't make much sense. Pretty hard trying to follow what he's saying during lectures. Very unorganized and doesn't make class fun at all. Avoid this class if possible.
Horrible, this class doesn't allow you to have your say nor does the professor for that matter... If a student opposes his ideas, this student is quickly belittled and and his comments quickly nullified with no regard for the fact that students do not possess his same crudentials. Stay far away from this professor and his self-centered attitude.
Great prof! really knows his stuff and actually cares about his students and aims to challenge them to think outside the box. would love to take a class with him again. All the people who gave him a low rating clearly did not attend class or did not pay attention in class if they did.
He is a great professor! I enjoyed attending his classes because you could see the interest he has in the material he teaches. He also genuinely cares about his students. I was dealing with a lot in my personal life and he was extremely accommodating to my situation and gave me some great advice as well. If you get a chance to take him: go for it!
Very clear in what he expects of you. Stating his opinions will definitely get you a good mark in the class, but there's still a lot to learn. Fairly easy going prof, midterms and finals are very straightforward. Take this class if you can!
He was an amazing prof! He thoroughly enjoys teaching and has great knowledge on all his information. He cares about his students and will help out in anyway, exams are simple and straight forward, take advantage of having a class with him!
Great professor. Challenges assumptions and works to get students to think critically about issues that can be taken for granted. This can at times offend some students. Always ready to assist students, answer questions and great to converse with.
Great Professor. He wants to give students insight in the underlying structures of world politics, which is in my view a responsible and necessary teaching method in the current age.
All around good prof. The class seems tricky at first but if you go to class you'll see that the exam questions are easily predictable. His review sessions are IMPORTANT. Also, the long answer questions are straight from the readings. He is an interesting prof with lots of stories to tell. He is a tough marker but fair. I recommend him.
By far one of the best classes I've taken in university! This course is extremely interesting. It's a real eye opener to what's happening in the world. I highly recommend this course!
Professor Grouev is an outstanding instructor who made this course what it is. He's that type of professor who makes you think and want to learn something. He makes ample use of Powerpoint slides and videos to illustrate his point and to keep his students interested in what their learning. I highly recommend this professor and his courses.
This professor is someone who gives clear instructions, is open to dialogue, who makes the class interesting and entertaining, and facilitates learning in his students instead of reading slides off of a projector - he discusses the slides and his midterms are fair. Lovely TAs too! The professor was very open about re-marking. GREAT PROF! 10/10.
Super chill guy. Although he might not finish every slideshow (they are posted online anyways), the real reason to go to class to to hear amusing anecdotes and watch how he connects historical events and terminology to practical everyday language. Innately boring, Grouev brings life to the material and gives an easy class for poli sci kids! RP
Amazing professor! He makes class interesting by relating his life experiences to the course material. He gives clear instructions and the midterm and final are straight from the slides and the readings. I've had him twice and I highly recommend taking a class with him. You'll learn a lot from his engaging lectures and eye-opening documentaries.
One of the best profs I've had a uOttawa. His expectations are super clear and engaging. Work hard and you'll get a good grade. I'm definitely going to be checking out his POL1102 class in the fall.
Very knowledgeable prof. His slides are very helpful, along with his personal knowledge and understanding of the topics presented. Just avoid giving opinions or answering questions if you don't want to feel like an idiot after. He has a way of answering questions in a belittling way. Good prof overall though.
He is an extremely intelligent professor, as he is quite well read. He has some daily strong opinions, and will fight you over them. You will only really enjoy his classes if you love the subject, because of the detail he goes into. For International Relations/Politics/Globalization, I wouldn't choose anyone else to teach me.
Very good professor. Gives good lectures that are interesting with the class material. Will go off subject sometimes an d shows a lot of videos. In general, his assignments are pretty easy and interesting.
Great professor, somewhat disorganized but it's an awesome class! Knows his stuff well, very helpful and his exams are relatively easy. I've had him twice and in my first year I didn't always understand where he was going with his lectures. I later learned that it is impossible to take notes so just sit there, listen, and study the powerpoints.
This guy should not be a prof. He's rude, intolerate of others views, and beyond condescending. His lectures were disorganized and all other the place, his midterms/final were easy, but the essay had little to no guidelines which meant marking was extremely subjective. Avoid any of his classes at all possible costs
Professor Grouev is awesome! He is not like other professors who make the material dry. He involves students and uses videos, examples and clarification to prove explain course material. I had a great time in IR and cannot think of anyone else to have, except him. Also a very funny man! Truly cares about his students and material. Helpful slides:)
He is quite interesting and teaches in a way that captivates the class. Found him to be helpful and reasonable outside of class. Very opinionated and often challenges the views of students, but still is funny and considerate (for the most part) while doing so. Definitely recommend him!
Although friendly and approachable, this professor is just plain boring. He flips way too fast through his slides and expects us to know what he is talking about. Exams were fairly easy.
Professor Grouev is the best professor I have ever had at the university of Ottawa. He keeps the lectures so interesting and he is very helpful. He is always very organized and puts a lot of thought into his lectures. I highly suggest having him as a professor!
He is a very fair and helpful professor if you inquire about grades/general knowledge or if you simply want to talk to him he is very knowledgable. His course pack was very informative, educational and relatable. Definitely recommend him as a professor!
Overall great prof, doesn't shy away from the undesirable topics when it comes to the dark side of globalization. It takes some effort to sit through some lectures but that's only because of the ugly subject matter. Take this prof and course if you want to learn, not sleep.
He was very knowledgeable about the subject, his style of teaching encouraged me to enquire more. He was always very helpful and challenged us to have interesting discussions. I appreciated his patience and the clever way of approaching topics, making us think, rather than merely instilling ideas in us. Overall, the best class I've taken so far!
Ivaylo grouev was boring. Completely monotone. Hated attending class. Tests are fair, as well as exams. Overall, avoid him at all costs.
I strongly recommend you take Prof Grouev's class if you have an interest in improving your knowledge in political science. People that find his classes boring likely have little interest in political science or find his subject matter too heavy. His class is very organized, expectations are clear and he makes himself very available for extra help.
Professor Grouev is a very knowledgeable professor. His classes are interesting because he uses a lot of interviews and documentaries. He is flexible and very helpful and cares about his students learning.
I don't understand how anyone could give this professor a positive review. He turned a politics class into an anti-US conspiracy theory class. He spent an entire 3 hour lecture rambling about conspiracies that had nothing to do with the class. His logic is impossible to follow. I dropped this class and took it with McMillan instead.
An interesting class ruined by a narcissistic egomaniac. If this class was called "Ivaylo Grouev the man" he'd get professor of the century. All he does is talk about himself and his stories are obviously fabricated. Class was boring as all he did was read off the slides and show documentaries to hide his lack of teaching ability. AVOID!
Class not always stimulating but learned a lot. Focus on the class slides and readings & its an easy A. Very clear of what he asks for the course - just know his opinions on the topics. He's intimidating, but don't be afraid to ask for help - he's incredibly friendly!
He definitely was full of himself and full of conspiracies. If you went against him he would shut you down and wouldn't let you say your differing opinion. Would stay away.
Pol 2103 A with Dr. Grouev was an eye-opener for me. Being an adult full-time student, a full-time employee, and a father is not an easy task. When I took this class with Dr. Grouev I fared that I might fail, however his teaching techniques are excellent. The course is within my abilities. I encourage you all to take his classes.
I am thankful professors like him exist. What a semester. Definitely will be looking into taking other classes with him, as should anyone who is interested in real learning.
Great Professor! It was a summer class so it was very condensed, but he did a good job of presenting the information the class needed to know, and was very helpful with exams/assignments. Lectures were stimulating and eye-opening. Would definitely recommend taking a class with this professor.
Good overall professor and nice guy. I feel that his expectations aren't entirely clear, especially on tests. However, if your grade is bad enough, he will let you make it up by writing another essay. He grades research papers easily, I received B+ on everything. Don't bother with the course pack, you can Google everything. Recommend for summer.
Prof. Grouev is an amazing professor and this class is probably the most interesting class I have ever took. As I said to the professor at the end of this class, it is really a mind-changing class, giving an other vision of the world, that is sometimes disturbing but always interesting. Thanks Prof for this great semester!
Good instructor, knows his stuff and will help you if you ask for help. Very fair!
I like politics so I enjoyed the class, he was reasonable, expected you to do the readings and participate, you'll do better if you study, not an easy A class but interesting material so keeps you engaged. Overall I liked it
Prof Grouev is a exceptional teacher who has the ability to transform relatively dry subject matters into themes of real importance and substance. I always found his approach to be interesting and at times was inspired by his passion to challenge the status quo, consequently creating awareness on 'norms' that otherwise go unquestioned. Great class!
Prof. Grouev provided an interesting summer semester, that was quite restricted by the span of the semester, a month. Even with such a short time span, I managed to learn a lot contributing to my interest in political science; he provides various hints, as well as areas of focus, for both the midterm and the final exams. Good Prof. I recommend him.
Prof. Grouev provided a very interesting course, that was greatly limited by the amount of time available, a month considering it is a summer course. I learnt a great deal of information regarding the various international paradigms. I recommend this class to anyone interested in PoliSci courses, just take into consideration he time span.
Professor Grouev is one of the best professors I had in my 3 years at Ottawa U. He conveys the information simplistically and the expectations are clear and detailed before exams or essays
Good class, very informative and well organized.
Great teacher and a wonderful conversationalist. His class has nothing to do with "conspiracy theories". On the contrary, he does an excellent job at expanding one's knowledge by introducing to the actual facts which tend to be suppressed by commercial media.Mostly North American students seem unhappy with his course. Truth hurts;)
More than 10 positive comments within 2 days with almost the same vocabulary. Obviously, this prof thinks a lot about himself !
Very interesting professor! Engages students in interesting discussions on material. Looks at different sides of various conflict and brings in interesting guest speakers as well. Very fair marker. Overall awesome class!
Student need a professors like Mr. Ivaylo at the university. this prof vividly connect the study material and reality life over the world ignored by people. When I took this course I did not know what to expect. However, I now see the world with different perspective. Through a devoted prof who encourages and supports with quiz and exams feedback.
This prof is flexible to explain to students who don't get his feedback, clarifying with real ex. one can relate to. Prof evaluation are from class material, there are no surprises. Attend class and read. I recommend the course to who is interested to see the world affairs, its effect and see the world from what just meets the eye!
TERRIBLE professor. repetitive slides, terribly easy work, and all lectures go on endless tangents.
At first his lectures will seem unclear, but it gets better overtime. He gives lots of examples which help clear up concepts and will even extend due dates if the class needs it. He tells strange but funny stories which always makes the class enjoyable. One thing though is that he sometimes speaks in French when he can't remember the English words.
Grouev likes to dance around the topic and talk about Bulgaria. He is convinced he is Morpheus. I would switch out of his class but its too late. He thinks he is really funny but haha he is not. So far I have learned nothing except that Communist Bulgaria is paradise on Earth. On the other hand, he likes jaguars and jacuzzis. Go Grouev!
Hard to understand, rambling, tends to say things that profoundly simplify/generalize complex political issues/times in history; lectures tended to go on strange, unintelligible tangents; has successfully depleted my interest in politics.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class due to the professor. He takes a keen interest in the subject and provides chances for all students to contribute to the discussion. You might think his stories are strange at first but they clarify the concepts in strange, hilarious ways. This prof is great!
He's very boring so make sure you have a coffee before class. All of his power points are online and just memorize word-for-word to do well on the course. The course pack is useless, just skim through it to get the main idea. Besides that, he is not very helpful or engaging and he makes his TAs do everything. He's not organized at all. Avoid.
I had a genuinely good time in Prof. Grouev's class. I thought he was very helpful and explained the material well. You could see his dedication to both the students and the class material. I got to know Prof. Grouev well and he's been really helpful in terms of the course and university life swell. I am very happy I took hiscourseandgottoknow him.
Terrific professor. I've had him twice and both classes were great. Be prepared to think critically and be willing to step outside of your intellectual comfort zone. He wants you to form your own (informed) opinion and not simply regurgitate course material. I highly recommend Prof. Grouev.
Don't drop this class after the first few lectures. He is very vague on general ideas until after the midterm, then he becomes a bit more focused. Overall, midterms and exams are pretty good, just talk to the TAs and read your course pack.
For good marks and coursepack, study the slides. Prof gives long extensions for projects and quickly answers emails. Uses coursepacks, which are cheaper than buying textbooks. Knows a lot about politics and can be quite understanding when students need time to work on papers. Weird but nice and ridiculously obsessed with his ratemyprof ratings
Very Understanding and helpful. When people says Prof's dont give a crap, they are not talking about Prof Grouev. if you ever need clarifying he is more than delighted to go out of his way to assist you, in any way he possibly can.
He may take sometime to get used to if you aren't familiar with his teaching style but its fairly easy to do well in this class if you keep up. I think I learned alot and I love the documentaries he shows. Be prepared to retain alot of info but if you like politics its pretty self explanatory. Don't be a smart ass and be open minded it is politics.
Grouev is awesome. I've had him for 3 courses and those who don't give him a chance, don't know what they're missing. He is an understanding individual and passionate about what he teaches. The text book is NOT useless, you can probably get a B or a B+ without it but the essay questions in his exams are based on the texts. definitely recommend him!
Amazing professor. You should take the time to talk to him as he is one of the few truly aware and experienced professors in the faculty. He actually knows what is going on in the world and will not dumb it down or censor it for you. One of the people I would love to grab a coffee with and chat with.
Amazing prof. He might seem weird at first, but I think that his way of teaching. He's very passionate about the content and wants student to engage and debate in his class. He's also very easy-going and helpful. The textbook is really important in this class. Exam are much easier when you read it.
Excellent instructor; well versed & passionate in realms of IR. Organized, professional; lectures using detailed power point slides enhanced with anecdotes. Encourages students to think outside of the box & to seek truth with openness & dialogue. Flexible with assignments. Midterm/Exam: long essay use text, short answers slides. Highly recommend!
highly experienced, but sometimes the course lacked structure, marking was sometimes spotty, however he is nice and the course overall was enjoyable
He likes to give important messages in a subtle way. He does not say them explicitly. Focus studying exam on Powerpoints (especially lists and definitions). A lot of journal readings. He is humorous and you will like lectures. His classes are often unorganized. Essay writing required 9 journals, which was hard.
His teaching style is particular; may take some time to adjust. Many students find him a bit arrogant/ intimidating, but it's just his personality. Go find him in his office hours; he is VERY helpful
Don't do it.
As long as you go to the classes and do the readings you'll be set. The only thing that really bugged me was that the power points were posted after he taught them, and they weren't very organized. Other than that, I truly enjoyed his class. It gets tedious, but it's worth it in the end. There's also 2 reaction papers & an Essay worth 40%.
Very passionate teacher. He has the ability to make students think critically about the world around them. His class was dynamic and I learned a great deal. Definitely recommend taking any class with him.
Highly intelligent, his goal is to introduce you to an alternative understanding of the global geopolitical landscape. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, be prepared to have your understanding of the world turned upside-down. Highly recommended. Attend DGD's and do the readings to achieve decent grade.
Fascinating professor who is evidently very passionate about his topics .Lecture slides are very clear and his expectations are outlined in a direct and clear manner . If you want the most out of his class , be sure to participate as he seems to have a particular appreciation for those who do. Funny & fair prof, would highly recommend.
Prof. Grouev is a TOP favorite prof of mine at OttawaU. His lectures are clear and intriguing, involving the class in discussion. He has a great sense of humor, and possesses the talent to inspire students to pursue careers in the international relations field. I've had 2 classes with him, and both were highlights of my university career!!!
He is great!
He's an awesome prof, one of my favorite in my two years at OttawaU. He always has something interesting to say through his heavy accent. Overall great class, learnt so much in an interesting way. Go to class and you'll get good marks, easy as that.
Ridiculously biased and dogmatic guy who wants you to regurgitate his own biased rants on your papers, or else he dings you for it (forget the bull about 'developing your own argument' or 'critical thinking' mierda they feed you). Also terribly unclear guy who goes on tangents totally unrelated the course and rambles on. Terrible prof. Avoid.
Good professor, one of those profs who are there to help you. Heard that he can have a one sided opinion and wouldn't listen by many, but glad that was proven wrong. He has opinions on matters talked about in class, but that doesn't deter class discussion or your grades. Something to improve upon would be making lectures more clear.
Inspirational professor, lectures are great and point of view is eye opening. Office hours are great and jokes are funny. Paper was on topic (got a 95 so don't understand some critics)and his view of the IMF and World Bank are well interpreted. Went to his office hours only once and got great feedback which helped me write about western influence.
Funny, engaging and interesting lectures, highly enjoyable.
Made my first year experience great. Was nervous about political science, but the prof is interesting, engaging and very intelligent. He will make you think about his lectures. Unfortunately, he gives somewhat vague instructions for assignments, and when pressed, said that he wants to us figure out what to do. Weird approach for a first year class.
Amazing prof, would recommend to anyone. If you put in the workeffort, you will get a good grade.
This was my favourite prof hands-down for the first semester. An incredible lecturer and engaging individual, I was always excited to go to his classes, where he would always have something controversial and insightful to say. Definitely one you have to work for, but he's so good at lecturing you want to anyway. Can't recommend enough.
Very interesting point of view. Enjoyable because of the different perspectives.
Was rather unspecific in class, but his lectures were entertaining and he seem passionate about what he's talking about. I thought he was a good professor, but in the end, I don't think I learned anything I couldn't have learned by reading a textbook.
The videos and documents he showed in class are interesting and inspirational. But he gives no feedback on your assignment.
Very good if you are interested in international politics. You will gain valuable knowledge if you are prepared to learn, and the lectures and readings are amusing. The TA's are not always great, but that is a given in any course. He is fair in going over your works if you prepare a defence for your paper.
If you study and do the mandatory readings, you will get a good grade. He explains the cours material well, but sometimes takes too long on one subject and does not have time to cover the rest of the material. However, that is not a problem because, when I had him as a professor, his powerpoints were posted online.
Lots of first years don't like him. I was in third year and loved his first year class. Expect a different approach to globalization. Critical. He makes you see the other side of it. If you actually take the time, he will have time for you. GO SEE HIM and not the TAs! Interesting because it's not vomitted textbook speech that we get with uOttawa.
He was very understanding of mark change that needed to be made (final grade noted B- although it was an A). He gave a 2 week extension on the final critical essay in his politics and globalization class because he wanted to ensure every student had clear expectations. He cares about the class and it a nice man!
Grouev main problem is that he simplifies subjects to the point of absurdity. He has a tendency to make stupid comments on unrelated subjects. He says he is Morpheus and is giving his students the red pill but most students taking his courses are much more aware of than he think. Pretty easy course, do the reading and you'll get an A easily.
Honestly, go to his class with an open mind. If you plan regurgitating the same traditional explanation, don't plan on getting points for originality. Puts everything on the slides, which is very helpful. If you seriously feel your mark is unfair, you can go seem him. Put in the effort and you'll see the reward.#RedPillFTW.
Very good prof and very kind! Love him. Hoping to take other courses with professer Grouev. Very funny too! Also, his midterm and exams are very fair!
Very good prof, best prof I've had in DVM yet. He's so passionate and understanding. He's lectures are interesting and his assignments are hard but if you work hard you can get a good grade. HIs exams are fair if you study you'll ace it. theres no surprises!
Ivaylo is hilarious. Such a different kind of prof and takes a different approach. Clear grading criteria - put in the work and get a good grade.
This course feels like a really safe one. It wasn't hard to pass, and the material is interesting, even if the lectures aren't particularly engaging. The papers are long, but I found the readings weren't entirely necessary, and Grouev is a friendly guy if you take advantage of his office hours. He's a great prof, if you have to take this course.
He is truly a shame to the institution. He advocates free thought, marking us on participation, this is deceptive though. He will cut off students mid point and for the most part ignores all of us. Inevitably he talks about the hard truth without truly looking for facts beyond what he want us to believe himself. Try another Prof...
Honestly go to his office hours. Very open and nice prof. I would definitely like to take another course with him. Shows great documentaries.
Guys, just don't do it i'm warning you.
Prof. Grouev gives very interesting lectures and provides great textbook/video documentary material to investigate. He can be unclear in lectures, but if you ask for clarification/other aide during office hours he is there to help. It feels as though essays are not marked consistently, I would always recommend a review. Overall, perfectly average
Hardest part about this course is buying the course package, although its actually pretty cheap. All lectures and videos are extremely interesting, plus everything is on Blackboard. Pretty clear expectations and the marking is very straightforward. Work and you'll get what you deserve. Great sense of humour.. I would take a class with him again.
this prof is simply bad. he is a great person and a really nice guy when you go to his office hours but he does not know how to whatsoever. he can not take criticism and will clearly prefer some students over others in class. if you have to take him, just be really careful!
He doesn't really give much detail as to what exactly he looks for in term papers. I found his lectures very dry because all he did was read off a powerpoint. His textbook is the same year after year and honestly, I taught myself 90% of the content because I never went to his class. I got a really good mark too.
Prof. Grouev is inspirational, direct and very knowledgeable. I really liked the fact that he added personal annecdotes relevant to the material discussed in class, as well as making the students engage in discussions. His way of teaching really captured me. So glad I got to finish one of my last courses at uni with a professor like Mr. Grouev./SWE
I love professor Grouev! AMAZING. Def one of the best POLI SCI profs at uOttawa :)
Professor Grouev is the absolute best. His way of teaching is so inspiring and he truly believes in his students. I genuinely enjoyed being in his class and I learnt so much. Would recommend 11/10
Taking this as my first year class wasn't easy and after my first midterm, I found it very difficult if this isn't your major. I believe you can get high marks in his class if it's your main area of study, other than that I personally don't recommend taking this class for credits since it's a lot of memorization. The prof is funny and insightful.
His lectures were really difficult to understand because he doesn't explain a lot of the concepts in plain English. It is really hard to take lectures notes because he jumps around a lot and doesn't speak with a lot of emphasis. I've had to do a lot of learning on my own by reading the articles and slideshows so I wouldn't recommend this class.
He's very hard to understand. Jumps between topics. You have to read on your own to understand. Going to class doesn't help very much. He's funny though.
He instructs through stories and anecdotes, so if that's how you learn then he's fine. For those that learn through instruction he is aggravating. There's usually a story a two a class about how great he is. Lectures are pointless, usually he'll make a single point per lecture and won't tell you what he expects on assignments. Don't take him.
I don't recommend him. He made me hate political science. He is NOT clear. He doesn't explain what's expected from you. His assignment structure is unclear. His midterm questions were vague. The readings assigned were too difficult to read and understand.
Simply put, he's bad. Most vague essay assignment I've ever done so I went to him during office hours. He told me my thesis was "wrong," then proceeded to tell me an anecdote, which was apparently what I was supposed to write the essay about. He'll call you out in class for not knowing obscure answers, lectures don't make sense, txtbook is useless
He is an awesome prof! He is a very caring and understanding person! His classes do have a lot of readings, but if you show up to class it is extremely easy to get a great grade with him. He really wants his students to succeed!!
Professor Grouev's exams were straight forward and expectations were clear. I didn't study that much and did the readings the night before and got an A-. Definitely do the readings and show up to discussion groups, they really helped me with the exams! He's an awesome prof and hilarious. Definitely recommend taking intro to poli sci with him.
Prof is ok, gets flustered when people ask him questions. Wasn't clear on how to do a book review but I got a good mark so not complaining. I had to teach myself the course before the midterm. He doesn't post powerpoints sometimes. Do readings and you should be fine.
Dude honestly doesn't care about teaching, can skip most of the lectures since the slides are online, easy class
Lectures are dry, he basically just reads the powerpoint--which all become available on blackboard anyways. Very self absorbed, always making references to himself to dry and drive across some kind of point. A large part of the mark is based on the essay, the expectations for the essay are completely ambiguous. Midterm and final are fairly easy.
This class is not easy but it isn't incredibly hard. If you put the work in then you will pass. His midterm and final are very similar but content heavy. His lectures aren't very helpful and very convoluted so you have to do a lot of research or have previous knowledge. He tells a lot of stories and he'll love you if you go to his office hours tho.
Honestly not a complicated class but he is one of the most condescending and intimidating teachers I've ever met. He values participation but once you put your hand up he either dismisses your comment or cuts you off halfway. Overall his lectures were very dry, disorganized, and we never quite knew which pieces of information were most important.
He's kind of a weird guy but I didn't hate him. You need to read for the discussion groups but otherwise it isn't really necessary. His questions on exams are really vague so you really need to know everything. If you're going to take him, try to be in a smaller class setting because his teaching style fits it better than in a big magistral class.
Ivaylo likes to discuss with his students to provide a more engaging learning experience. The midterm was extremely easy as he gave exactly which questions to study. The exam was a bit more vague however still very simple. Course pack is not needed until discussion groups and midterm/exam. No need for readings other than those ones. Easy A
I took Politics and Globalization and I couldn't tell you a thing about politics (& probably couldn't give you a solid definition of globalization). His sources/readings were all at least 10 y/o. The class was basically conspiracy theories taught as fact. The man literally used Wall-E as a reference. Easy enough work but no serious content.
Presumably he is alright. But this is-- de facto--more of a class on leftist anti-Imperialist ideas than a-- de facto--comprehensive study of International relations, presumably. But mostly de facto.
Not the typical political science professor. Will give you more perspectives, and is not afraid to question the liberal politically correct culture in campus. Philosophical and clearly knows his stuff.
If you're looking for a prof that really likes to talk about himself and not teach anything worth while, Grouev is for you. While his papers and readings are interesting and easy to do, I couldn't stand going to lectures. If you get on his good side you're golden, but that's tough to do.
Polarizing! He is *incredibly* knowledgeable and experienced in his field, but clearly chafes within a bureaucratic system/large lecture format. He should probably not be teaching 1st year courses; but his upper year courses and seminars are lights out awesome. If you need to be spoon-fed your academics, look elsewhere.
He talks a lot in class and enjoys to talk about himself but than that he's an excellent prof. He is more than willing to answer questions, loves starting arguments in class to make students think. Great teacher all aorund
Prof Grouev is the best political professor at uOttawa! He posts all his slides on Blackboard so you don't have to attend the lectures. But you must read all his slides carefully because this is the best way to prepare for his exams. His feedback for the essay is useful and always available after class. Will take his class again
I took both POL 1101 and 1102 with Grouev. His courses have lots of readings but it isn't too hard. There are two discussion group days worth 5% each. You just do the assigned readings for it beforehand and discuss your opinion for free marks. He gave lots of written feedback on the essays and was easy to contact for help. Very clear rubrics too.
Great Prof, his courses help you build analytical thought. If you understand the theories and their basic principles/ tenets you will pass, study power points, easy class overall.
He uses a lot of powerpoints, mostly with info you dont need to know. He rambles a lot about random stuff, and calls on people who clearly look confused. I asked a question and he made fun of me for not understanding the concept. Overall, kind of a rude guy.
Never explained things all he did was talk about useless stuff
Absolutely terrible. Rambles on about topics that have nothing to do with lecture, ppts are illegible and unhelpful. Essays require unnecessary amount of work and exams are difficult and long. Went to every lecture and didn't learn anything except that Bulgaria is apparently the root of all culture.
The best political professor @UOttawa! He clearly cares about his students and enjoys getting to know them outside of class. His lectures are very inspiring and encourage critical thinking. Most of all, he isn't afraid to speak his mind and challenge the PC culture that is parasitizing academia. You'll pass if you regularly attend and participate.
He truly cares for his students and is quite kind and generous. I learned A LOT from this course and I will definitely retake his courses if I have a chance.
This man is a gem of UOttawa FSS. This is University; people complain he is tough, but no, he is fair. He is current, intelligent and exactly what you need if you are SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR FUTURE CAREERS. His text books are self made, cheaper and focus on published works. Do not have your phone out, READ the articles, study what he points out to study
Really easy going professor. His topics are very interesting, and will definitely open your eyes to a lot of things. Grades and all that aside, I found the course to be very interesting as it changed my perception of the world. If you do the readings, and attend lectures, you'll get a solid A.
Really easy going, and nice professor. His lectures are interesting, and inspiring. The subject matter combined with his input will really change your perception of modern day society. The midterm and final exam are straight forward. He tells you exactly what will be on them. Do the readings and attend the lectures for a good mark.
he's a solid prof. and knowledgeable. He really cares about the topics he discusses. I would not recommend submitting anything against what he believes though because he will wreck you. I didn't buy the textbook and got by easily but I went to all his lectures
Clearly has favourites, I was unfortunate enough to not be one of them. Class was more difficult than it had to be, and I don't feel like I took anything away from it. I tried emailing him several times about clarification and he would take several days to basically tell me "tough luck". His class was and is a waste of time.
Ivaylo Grouev. What a guy. He is not the best most amazing presenter of information.. Basically self-taught myself this class. However, he says exactly what will be on the exam so it's not hard to prepare for his exams at all.
lectures are hard to follow, he rambles a lot and has very obvious favourites - avoid if possible
Great class, Ivaylo made it pretty fun as he tried to incorporate as much jokes and stories as he could. be prepared to take notes in class as the lectures are pretty heavy however he is really lenient and a pretty chill marker. do the readings and make notes on them as he incorporates them heavily into the midterm and final
I had Grouev last year for POL1102 and 2103. His class was pretty easy to get an A. Just read his slides before the exam and be creative for the research paper. I got a 90 for his two research paper and I will with him again this year for POL3179.
I personally found the material interesting but his teaching style did not suit me. He lost my paper! he gives hints for exams in class. He is brutal in DGDs and hardly lets students speak.
Easily the best professor I've ever had at uOttawa. Not an easy A by any means, his tests are solely long answer/ essay questions based pretty much entirely off of the course pack readings. He cares about his students very much and if you put in the effort and see him after class you WILL do well.
He is very opinionated, not always accurate in the sense that he will only tell you half the truth around a specific topic. He is hillarious but this seemingly positive aspect is overshadowed by his bad manners. Be prepared to be lessened by the teacher whenever you give an answer . He is also understanding if you get to know him .
Professor Grouev is an amazing professor who is kind, knowledgeable, caring, understanding and genuinely wants his students to do well. I recommend him to anyone who is interested in Politics and Globalization, is looking an interesting elective or who wants a straightforward course. Also, he gives you a very accurate idea of how exams will be :)
Easy A class/Prof ! He gave us the MT and final questions in advance. 10 page critical essay on an entire book but it was easy to write. Accessible outside of class. 2 DGDs but his opinion is kinda biased and imposed on you. I never went to class and did well! Notes are all online. Don't by the course-pack, you're only gonna use twice. Good prof!
Students in my class made these "I got an A" comments, before the semester was over. What does that tell you? that yes, he does have favourites. He's condescending when you go talk to him one on one and can be very rude. He gave me a poor mark on a summary we had to write because my opinion was different than his, not a joke. (i have two degrees).
Not a particularly engaging prof. Furthermore, his personal beliefs bleed through in his teaching. But, if you do the readings, you will be more than fine on the exams.
This guy is truly a gem at the university. As a prof, like "to teach", h is actually belw average. You can skip most of his classes and readings and still succeed relatively well. But what's great is he has the biggest balls of any poli sci prof. He goes where other dare not. That alone is 5/5 for me.
Your opinion in this class is irrelevant. His is the only one that matters.
I know he seems a bit mean, but he's actually not that bad. The readings are a lot but they are quite interesting. The exams are not tough, he basically gives the class a good idea of what to study.
He does not teach. Claims to be "politically correct" but that's his term for exposing that America is taking over the world. Course is anti-capitalism, anti-globalization, anti-American. If you are a Communist then you will love this course. He puts on documentaries and anything he says does not make sense. Also has specific answers he looks for.
Does not teach, just pushes his ideology. I didn't spend thousands of dollars to be indoctrinated.
Would ask for your opinion on a topic and then break down every reason your opinion is wrong. Lectures can be hard to follow and found powerpoints hard to read and too text heavy.
I've taken four courses with professor Grouev and would recommend them to anyone interested in international relations. I've learned more from this professor than any other at uOttawa. Expect to read and write lots, and study lots for the exams.
Lectures don't make sense. He's extremely critical of all students & their opinions, and if you say something he disagrees with he's very rude.
Lectures are very boring. He regularly has to stop, saying "actually, is anyone listening to me? OK laptops off". Discussion groups with the TA is fine though, but make sure you read the book before. The tests themselves have almost nothing to do with lecture content. Could probably just skip everything if you took politics in high school.
He is a good prof. Those who are in disagreement with him shall look upon his biography and read some of his work. He has steady political opinion and not afraid to state it. Today it is an extremely valuable quality. He just try to make you think, not to repeat a generally accepted ideas.
His lectures are dry, but if you can listen they are interesting. Other reviews are right that he has strong opinons, but its actual useful as it challenged my own ideas. Super friendly and kind outside of class and very helpful with any questions you may have.
Loved taking intro politics with Dr. Grouev. He is truly a thought-provoking professor. Some people say that he only wants you to write papers that reflect his opinion - but that is absolutely not true! He is hilarious, very intelligent, and the grading is clear and fair. Absolutely recommended.
There is a course pak to buy at Rytek; Course outline is available in there at the front page. Readings are in sequence w the weekly progression- prof may be slow in lectures and speed through. ** To be successful in this class, do readings for discussion groups, don't focus on the quotes/etc. in slides- only the key components*
There's a lot of reading to be done and the lectures are complex because Globalization is a complex subject, but the teacher is a gem and he knows what he's talking about! It's my first English class at uOttawa and I would take another class with that teacher. He's understanding and very accomodating.
do not take this prof
Absolutely awful, I'll never take him again. Doesn't answer questions in class unless he agrees with the premise, and makes you feel incompetent for not agreeing with his far-left opinions. His lecturing is nonsensical and rarely have anything to do with the readings. Made us read a book written by a conspiracy theorist for a major essay, too.
He wasn't very accessible, but his TAs are. His huge textbook will be used extensively, a LOT of reading in this class. His examination style is <> He is lenient with due dates and will probably give extensions (but its a secret) He is a little cocky. His grading criteria is specific, so write a lot
The way this prof thought this class was one of the reasons I dropped out of poli sci. His lectures are confusing and very heavy, there's lots of readings to do for each class but he never actually discusses them. I learned absolutely nothing in this class
First day of Online Poli-Sci 101 and the year has been clearly laid out. He's going to talk and everyone is going to sit around confused and bewildered at the sheer absurdity of this prof. He cannot string together two words that make sense, and he did not mention Poli-Sci once unless a student brought it up first. Its so bad that it is hilarious.
Politics class feels more like a bad history class, tells us off when ask questions or want more information about assignments. Very confusing, class is mostly background noise at this point. 1/10, would not recommend.
The way he teaches makes absolutely no sense. He doesn't like you to ask questions and most of the time, you have to just teach yourself the material because he is not good at explaining anything.
For an online class, it's very relaxed. I don't go to class as much because yes his lectures don't make a lot of sense, but the powerpoints are great. I'm doing pretty well and his TA's are fair with marking. He seems like a great person though and is super caring too. He's fine with giving extensions so long as you ask in advance.
AVOID! I quite like political studies, and my major is connected to it. I came from another university, even from two other colleges, with diplomas under my belt. This prof is the worst I've seen. I tried emailing him multiple times, no response. I emailed about class help with my disability. Ignored! The students are more helpful than he is.
Had him a few years back as a professor for intro to international relations and some others. Tough, but insightful. His lectures aren't always easy to follow, but if you put in the effort to do readings and really engage with the topic, you'll find him rather good. Definitely not a prof everyone will like, but a good one nonetheless.
There're 5 major assignments and they all take a similar amount of work but 2 of them are worth 5% then 20% then 40% the 30% for the exam so it's not very balanced. There's a LOT of reading and the lectures make no sense and are also kind of boring (I kind of stopped attending them).
There are a lot of complaints that you can find from the average person who has attended an Ivaylo class, but I feel the flak he gets is undeserved. He genuinely enjoys his lectures, the essays are quite a few (wrote around 20 pages total for the class) but they're more interesting work than average, and the students in this class are a fun bunch!
To the students who find him boring, or think his classes are like a history class, I really wonder why they went to university. Probably the most informative professor I have had in my university experience, and he addresses challenging issues directly and with clarity while ensuring students have a foundational knowledge of actual theory
Almost never responded to emails, lecture material was insanely dry and assignments were hard to find and understand online.
The way prof Grouev structures the content of his classes is very interesting and his coursepack has great material. However, his lectures can be hard to follow and his expectations are not always clear.
Honestly a pretty mediocre class. Some of the content is a little tricky to wrap your head around, especially if you're new to the subject, but if you do the readings and put in the effort to understand you can still manage a pretty good mark. Advice Do readings early bcuz they're dense, pay attention in class, do a lil outside research to help.
His lectures were almost always confusing but attendance is not really necessary. The workload was not heavy and the assignments aligned well with his teachings and the course pack readings.
A lot of these comments about Prof. Grouev are unwarranted at best and a gross exaggeration at worst. Hes a very passionate lecturer and even over Microsoft Teams, he was still a highly engaging prof. Theres a lot of writing to do in this class but all the papers are consistent with the readings he assigns. Very lenient with extensions as well!
I found his lectures boring and almost always fell asleep. He isn't very good with technology and would have his wifi cut out. He couldn't figure out how to turn on his camera one lecture and just decided to do an audio recording with no powerpoint or video. Our class had to remind him to record the lectures and he would refuse or delete the videos
Incapable of successfully communicating with student online. PowerPoints were incredibly disorganized and illogical which made the content impossible to understand.
Do yourself a favour and take another prof's class. Unclear instructions on BrightSpace and reads slides word for word. This guy was, to put it simply, just not meant to be an educator. On two occasions, the lecture went past class hours and he gave testable material after the class was over. Could've been such a fun class.
He's a passionate old school professor. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like him. His assignments are somewhat tough because there's a lot of reading and writing involved, but he's a fair grader and is very very lenient with extensions. It's not a class where you can get an easy A but it's not super hard either. I'd recommend his class .
Great teacher
Such a good professor. Not even sure where to start. if you're looking for a teacher who gives great assignments and requires limited class attendance- this is your guy. All of his assignments refer to his course pack and are easy reads, he's generous with marks (along with his TAs) and gives extensions when needed. Great guy, awesome professor.
Very nice and caring professor. He's old school though and makes you work for it but very lenient with extensions and accommodates you for any requests. Lot of reading but questions are fair. Not a bird course, but I highly enjoyed the prof. I'd take him again!
He doesn't give us a rubric and expects us to know what he wants.
This prof always cracks me up as he will talk about random stuff. Found his course reasonable, all his tests were essays that were doable if you put in the work. Did not need to show up for lectures, its not related to the tests. He talks about some interesting stuff such as sharks in Canada, or what province has the best weather - random but funny
He is a really nice professor. However, he is horrible with technology and his classes are very dull. Also, the classes are not necessary for any of the homework that he provided. By the end of the term, there were only 8 students in live classes. I do not recommend you take his class as his class was very confusing in terms of grading.
I am coming back to review Prof. Grouev after taking him for POL 1101. I would say he is much stronger at teaching POL 1102. The lectures were very interesting and assignments fair. He is not everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed this class. Those willing to put in the work will get a lot out of it.
A lot of reading and annoying projects. The only reason why I love Grouev is because he was unintentionally funny and basically an icon. I had a cool gc which made the class more enjoyable too. Lectures were boring and I barely went but Grouev being blunt, rude, and awkward made him funny. If you already dont go to lectures and read pretty easy cla
This man cannot teach. His class is basically and indoctrination. Hilarious guy though.
He is knowledgeable in International Relations, but otherwise meh. Sells a textbook that is photocopied, literally unreadable articles for 80 bucks. The texts are cutoff: it is a legitimate crime/scam. Did give extensions during tough times, tho
I took the class over the summer and I found that he was able to present the material in a very clear and understandable way. He is well known in his field and has the knowledge to back it up. There is a lot of reading but all are very useful to his course content. very accommodating and listens to students' comments, encourages class discussions.
He is awesome! Teaches very well and take times to make sure students understand the subjects! Highly recommend!
-Have to read about 100 pages per week, and text is very hard and heavy to read -Not good with slides, a bit all over the place -I had trouble understanding the lecture material -Doesn't explain that good -Would Not recommend
lol this guy is funny to watch lectures but the articles we have to read are hidden behind 100 dollar paywall which is bs and your final assignment is to write a 8-10 page critical analysis essay on a 400 page book
There are mixed opinions on Grouev but I think his classes were very eye-opening to new perspectives. He is a bit biased in his ideas. Definitely a lot of reading and is not for everyone, the paper is around 12 pages based on a 400-page book, on top of other readings. I wouldn't take if you aren't seriously interested in this topic.
Unintentionally very funny (showed us a lot of clips from the Matrix and said he was gonna "redpill" us). Was graded on midterm, book review essay, and final exam. Lenient on due date extensions. VERY reading heavy (coursepack + textbook). His lectures are kind of messy but its not a difficult class, just basic concepts to learn
I found Professor Grouev to be unique but also very inspiring in his lectures. He brought fresh perspectives to the table, although I didn't always see his methods as very scientific, which is what I'm used to in university. While I found many of his ideas interesting, I hoped for more scientific backing during his lectures.
I've taken dozens of courses across three degrees. Grouev is one of the worst, most biased professors I've ever had. If you're an unabashed communist, you'll love him. If you're a classical liberal, conservative, or libertarian, he's an absolute wacko. He'll grade you not because you're right or wrong, but because you agree or disagree with him.
Grouev's class is a wild ride - he's hilarious and unintentionally entertaining, but the workload is heavy. If you're willing to do the readings and engage, it can be a rewarding experience. unstuckstudy ai was a lifesaver for essay prep.
