He grades a little tough, but is really, really interesting.

Soljan is intelligent and passionate. I strongly recommend him for literature.
No organized pattern. Hard to take notes. Wise, and expects you to know all.
IS there any focus to this class? Interesting but not focused.
Hard to understand what he wants.Very smart guy!Little work, hard lit. readings.
if you dont like to read dont take his class, but easy for SWS i guess
Discuss little Lit, but a lot about life. Very interesting and enjoyable!
Smartest guy I have ever met, I swear, I've never had a better prof
Horrible. This was like being at church. All we talked about was religion
He talked about God constantly. Great class if you liked to get preached to.
seems like he asks retorical questions, but he wants us to answer them
Prof knows his stuff! Lots of background material. Forces you to think!
Should be called Theology 101
gReAt gUy aNd tEaChER
Take him for Brit Lit and Shakespeare. Very nice guy. you will learn a lot
You'd better know it his way. Came away more confused than when i came in!!!
More discussion about assigned material would have been nice; vague lectures.
Very humorous, knowledgeable and interesting. Great class! Great guy!
expect to watch unrelevant videos, and get preached too.unclear on papers-boring
Very smart. He knows his stuff. It takes him FOREVER to return papers
Nice, focuses too much on religion ok comments, dont expect to get papers back!
Great prof, great insight
Very human, down-to-earth and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the class!
Don't know how I did b/c I only got 2/5 papers back. But, was a nice guy.
What a nice man. Excellent professor! Ask questions about papers, he'll answer
Wonderful,great lecture voice,smart,funny,fair,HELPFUL,kind,up to date,confident
very, very easy...nice guy, but I didn't learn much
Awesome professor, one of the smartest professors I've had
I thought he was a cool prof, he was absent alot. He takes a long time to return
Nice guy, but if you want to get your papers back, then don't take him as a prof

Great Prof, for the record, got every one of my papers back.
Be ready to be preached about religion, unclear on papers and lecture.
funny guy, easy class, not too much work at all!
I really liked him as a prof. knew his stuff. critiques your papers well.
He takes MONTHS to give papers back, if ever!!! You won't learn anything!!
A favorite. hard grader, if you get a paper back, but smart and sincere.

EASY class. didn't learn much. SUPER nice guy!
always late! we begged to get back 1 paper, no idea on how you are doing in clas
disorganized, but kind hearted and an easy 'A'
If you didn't learn anything, then you don't recognize genius and are a fool
He is a GENIUS!!! He knows EVERYTHING! It was so fun to come to class because he is SO interesting. Highly recommended! Gives great advise for your papers too--REALLY helpful. Loved him!
Didnt learn much, nice guy though, always late and you have to fight to get papers back, he grades in your favor though, easy class, I didnt even buy the book and I got a B, just take notes in class.
He was a good, if somewhat eccentric teacher. I enjoyed his class a lot.
He is always late and shows videos everyday, sometimes twice a day that are very boring. He is an easy grader though. Didn't learn much.
He's a smart guy...but videos every day gets old. Its not high school, but it'll feel like it is. Hardly even goes over the assigned readings. Preachy sometimes. Easy A but its boring.
Boring videos every day. Graded primarily on papers.
great guy. really know his stuff. lots of videos, but fair and kind
Great Great Great, need I say more, English dept needs more teachers like him. Great background, seems to be able to relate current events to Shakespeare.
Awesome Prof. I'd reccommend him to anyone. Also had him for ENG 220 - really enjoyed it. He really cares about students.
Never turns back papers on time, but very flexible. Easy A if you write half way decent. Can be boring at times though. Movies do get sort ot old, but there are a few funny ones.
Really great Professor, very caring and considerate, he really cares about students, and that results in your being able to care more about the class.
Probably favorite prof ever. Brilliant, goofy, and witty. People complain about him not handing papers back on time, but he doesn't care if you hand your papers in late, so I can more than tolerate that. Lots of dull vidoes, but his talks are awesome.
More like a book club than a class. You learn a lot, but don't expect to do a lot of class work.
snore, it will come it handy when you watche videos almost every class period. Easy A but super boring, only got one paper back, talked him out of making us write one paper, we are allowed to turn them in late and rewrite them also.
Nice man. Very fascinating and funny. Sometimes difficult to decipher, but is very laidback and helpful on papers. Lots of movies.
He's a good guy, real funny and lectures are usually pretty interesting, even if they dont have anything to do with the reading. Don't expect to get your papers back tho, it took him half the semester to grade our first paper.
I am so sick of his stupid movies. I have had him for two classes and we watched the same movies in both. Easy grader, but DO NOT TAKE NIGHT CLASSES WITH HIM, you will fall asleep guaranteed. Nice guy, bad teacher.
Brilliant guy, takes current issues and makes them relevant to the subject matter. And the videos are great. Perhaps some students need to have a more open mind to how the movies are connected to the subject rather than watch them at face value
Genious! Need I say more?
Read 7 small books for class, but only wrote 4 short papers throughout the term. Late on handing them back and watch a lot of videos. He is a fun instructor, just go class and write the papers, you'll do great! Not demanding at all.
Very smart guy and loves to talk about anything. If you visit him in his office he loves to help students. He butchers your papers, but isn't that hard of a grader
I absolutley love this man! even tho learning about shakespeare isn't my fav thing to do at 10am, i loved going to his class. so insightful, intelligent, very realistic. understands students, no pressure approach. he's a genius
He's freaking brilliant. Shows a lot of vids which will bore you, so be prepared...but when he lectures, he's astonishingly smart. He loves to help students, just ask. If you can handle lots of vids, you can handle him. He IS brilliant.
Dr. Soljan made connections between the literature and recent/current affairs and culture. This will really help me when I teach my own classes! (Be prepared for lots of videos.)
Teaches with no pressure, didn't learn a thing, too many Campbell videos
Complete joke. This man is a joke. Very uneducational, jokey.
He is so great! His accent is the best and his lectures actually make you think and question what you're studying. You will not regret taking any of his courses - you'll be challenged but you'll love every minute of it!
Sometimes his movies grow old, but he's an awesome professor who cares about his students. If you do the work and participate in class, an easy A.
I don't know why people dump on this guy so much. If you want a straight up lecture class with tests, go join that. If you want interesting and funny discussions with open-ended paper topics, take Soljan.
this man deserves a smiley face. he is obviously very smart and you can get alot out of his class if you try.
This man is not only brilliant but he is a interesting as well
BAD, BAD!!! THE worst prof I've ever had. He is LATE every day, disrespectful to the students, expects us to know things he hasn't taught, is SO BORING!!! Never gave us a syllabus, so never knew what was due until the class before. DO NOT TAKE!!!
If you want a real professor who is interested in educating--not the prof. He is the absolute WORST I have ever had. Disrespectful to students, rude and ALWAYS LATE! Jump off a clif before you sign up for him. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! You've been warned.
DRY! Couldn't understand the book, he didn't help clarify - and the movies?! AAUGH! Not clear on paper requirements.
I wish he'd show more movies, just so we wouldn't have to hear HIM talk. Except, he constantly interupts the movies to say something more. I've learned NOTHING. Brain cells are dying during his class!
Take this professor if you want to learn absolutely nothing!! Never clear about paper topics. Shows boring movies every week. AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS SHOWS UP LATE TO CLASS!!
Professor Soljan is such a sweetie. He tris to make interseting points during lecture, rather than sitting and talking about the book the whole hour. His movies are kind of weird, but he knows his stuff and is very willing to help any one of his students.
Ivo is such a wonderful guy! Sure he may get off track and talk about life lessons rather than the text, but I think its really insightful and the students gain a lot from it. Sure he hands back papers late and comes to class late...but its easy and i look forward to the 9am class. take him!
Great guy, great teacher, brilliantly funny, and far from dull.
very boring gets off topic and rushes students through books.
This professor is truly brillant. However, he is unable to the knowledge that he knows and clearly present it to his students. He is unclear about papers and grading. He takes at least a month or more to finally give them back with an unclear grade of A/B or B/C.
If you want an easy grade, but learn absolutely nothing, take him. No quizzes on reading. Grade is based on papers alone which takes him forever to grade (almost 2 months for a 2 page paper). Shows boring and pretty pointless movies. Avoid if you want to actually learn
Talks more about life lessons than material, shows a lot of videos, shows up late for class daily, returns papers weeks late... but he's funny, clever, and pretty easy.
Brilliant! Great films and good delivery of material
What a cool proff. Had awesome, real life examples and tried to make class fun. Papers were not so bad. Real nice guy and very funny. Take this class and read the assignments and you will do fine.
Take this professor if you want to learn absolutely nothing!! Never clear about paper topics. Shows boring movies every week. AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS SHOWS UP LATE TO CLASS!!
Great professor, papers are fun and he knows a ton about Shakespeare. He can be late on returning papers but I have been in two of his classes and got A's on every single one, I would defenitly take him again!
If you want to learn anything DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! No quizzes or final exams. He is always late and we watched so many movies that had absolutely nothing to do with the reading material. I learned NOTHING!! What a waste of time. It took him 2 months to correct a 2-3 page paper. What a joke!!!!!
Soljan has a simple format. You write essays and talk in class. Those are your grades. You will probably get one or two essays back (around midterm). He is late for class every day, and all due dates will be endlessly pushed back. He is super nice.
Sweet guy, a little strange
If you want to have any guidance on your papers, DONT take this guy. If mythology is something you're familiar with and okay with, then take him. He's a nice guy, but terribly unfocused. He never talked about anything relevent in class, leaving you to pretty much be on your own to interpret the text
Ivo is odd. gives you examples of everything you could possibly write about in your papers, and the titles. be ready to talk in class, he'll wait for an answer to every question, no matter how long it takes. when it's over though, you'll be talking about him forever. i'd say sign up, he's worth it.
He is a very smart man, knows so much it's hard for him to keep to the subject.Never returned papers, maybe one.Likes to hear opinions, essays aren't very clear. However,he is willing to help you..and he can be fun to listen to. Watched a lot of movies, and due dates were pushed back.Had class outside.
A joke of a professor. Plus, you can barely understand a word he said.
Genious, need I say more. This man knows his stuff, and if you are intelligent enough, you can follow his format.
Very nice person and willing to help, however was quite disorganized. Papers will be pushed back and maybe never returned, will always be late to class, but still has a charm about him that makes you want to read and participate. If you are not annoyed by his idiosyncrasies, just show interest and effort and you will get an A.
He is very intelligent but does have a tendency to delay deadlines, as well as show videos.Conversational style of lecture rather than a group work based course.Participation is a MUST.His essay assignments are free from restriction and only seem to prove challenging to those who are poor writers.Reccomended if u like open format&free thought
I enjoyed this class. I thought I would have NO interest in Brit. Lit. but, with the lectures he gave and the videos he showed, I actually sparked an interest. I also liked having the class graded on papers we wrote. Awesome instructor!! Hope to have him again! Thanks for your effort, Dr. Soljan!
Things to know about Ivo: 1 Christian 2 tangents a lot 3 tardy often 4 clone of Regis 5 feels the weather in the front of his head 6 likes Coke better than Pepsi 7 lived most of his life in England 8 likes fried eggs --------------------------------------------Ivo is a great prof. I learned so much in his class and the discussions were interesting
He is the perfect professor for the free-minded student. I highly enjoyed him. No syllabus. No due dates. When he does assign an essay, he is very flexible and can push it back another week if desired. Most of the class is discussion and movies, and he likes to hear others' opinions. I loved his style so much that I signed up for another class!
He always rambels on in Shakespeare class. We spent about a month on Hamlet, but he's very intellegent and expects you to be. You go to class listen to him lecture, take notes, and write 3 papers and that's it. Very nice guy. As everyone else has said though, it'll be months before you get any of the papers you've written back.
Insanely intelligent. I could listen to him talk about literature all day. Class is usually a lecture or movie. Grade = 3 papers w/ very flexible deadlines--whenever you can get them done. Takes attendance but doesn't count it. Likes people who participate. I would recommend him for any ENG course, I've taken him for many.
He is a great prof. So much insight and intelligence- listening to him talk usually wasn't a hard thing. As everyone else has said- only three papers and most of the class is lecture or movies. I enjoyed his class.
Very intelligent, patient, and understading man. Tends to go off on tangents. If you have an open mind and like to think you'll enjoy his classes. Some of the vidoes are, well, boring but you can always take a nap. :o) Oh and he also supplies the titles to your papers.
Loved Ivo's class. He is extremely intelligent and has very interesting things to say. Sometimes he seemed to be going off into space, yet he was able to make it all come full circle. Pretty slow on getting papers back but if you use some humor and don't make the papers too stiff, you'll do fine. Definitely take Ivo for mythology.
I loved his class! He's such a great prof. I would recommend him to anyone. He's very intelligent and funny. His class isn't hard, but if you listen to what he says you learn a lot. Always ask for help and email him with any problems..he's very understandable.
He is so RANDOM! I could never follow what he was talking about because it never had a point. The reading was a joke because we never discussed it.The discussions were a joke because he would shoot down everything you say. Class was a joke because you could sleep through it and still know just as much as those who didn't. Easy, but pointless class
Great prof. Class was pretty easy but the discussions were fun and meaningful. I learned a ton about mythology that I had not known before.
I love him. He's one of my all time favorite prof.'s. He's fascinating and he really cares about what he is teaching. Its nice to have a teacher that actually seems like he enjoys his job.
He's a good guy but not a great teacher. The good thing about his class, you can turn papers in whenever you want as long as you have them in by the time you write your next paper. The bad thing is he takes forever to turn papers back. This is the last week of classes and I still haven't gotten my midterm paper back. It's frustrating!
He is a very nice man with a good sense of humor and a very easy-going style of teaching (i.e., gets there late, doesn't care about due dates). He has interesting things to say, although not a lot of it is related to the texts. If you're expecting a traditional mythology class, you may get annoyed when he rags on President Bush for the 900th time.
He's a nice guy, but can be confusing. Papers never really had a due date. You had to write a letter of why you were absent. Papers were never handed back in a timely fashion. It's exam week, and I still don't have one of my papers back. Good part-our exam is a paper.
very nice guy. however, the class was horrible. all we did was watch movies that were irrelevant to the class and he never told us what exactly to write for papers. DONT take him.
i love this man, he is an awesome prof. he's really laid back and he CAN be kinda confusing as to exactly what he wants on papers, but that just kinda leaves it open for you interpret what you want, so its cool. participate and joke around a lot in class and you'll get on his good side. i didnt even turn in my final paper and got an A in the class!
Funny and interesting lectures, really knows his stuff. Would have seen him act. Paper topics are broad, I like that, but if you need specifics he is not the guy for you. He just requires good writing-fair grader.
The course material is quite dry, but his lectures are animated. Unfortunately, he is SO opinionated and convinced he is correct that he spends most of his time sounding like he's cutting you down. A nice and very knowledgable man, but his class is like his politics: skewed. Don't take him if you are actually interested in learning about the books.
He is a very nice man but his lectures were always off topic and are grades were only based on three papers. As long as you go to class and take a lot of notes getting a good grade isnt to hard.
Lectures a lot and goes on tangents. He's a really nice guy though and cracks a lot of jokes. Unclear about papers but I got A's on them even though I had no clue what to write. Show up to class and look interested and you will do fine. Mythology was fun.
Nicest prof youll ever have. So kind, makes a lot of jokes. BUT... if you want to learn about Shakespeare, take someone else. He should really teach philosophy. Thats all he talks about. He's one of those professors that is too smart to teach the material. I know nothing more about Shakespeare than I did when I started, which is disappointing.
Hes a great professor, very nice and understanding if you dont have your papers done on time. This is my second class with him and in both classes its extremely unclear as to what to write your paper about. The best thing to do is to keep asking him what to write until you get an idea.
Oh Soljie. Good guy, goes way off topic just about every day. Take notes on relevant things, and topics that relate to the papers. He accepts late work and is understanding. Attendance is mandatory- he takes it religiously. The papers were not hard for me, just summarize his lectures and you're good to go. I didn't read any of the plays!
I loved this class!!! One of my favorite profs. His teaching methods are unique so he is difficult to understand @ times because he is usually just doing whatever pops in his head at times but he realizes this and is a fair grader. I learned so much about the topic and about life in general and I think taking anything by him is a MUST!
Fun teacher and he tells you exactly how to write the papers. If you go to class you'll get a good grade.
He's a nice guy, but shouldn't be teaching. He says participation is part of your grade, but he talks so much that student discussion is impossible. He marked me absent for three weeks because he didn't know me! He grades you lower on papers if your opinion doesn't match his. Grades papers late so you don't get grade until report cards come out
Soljan is great! He is extremely funny and his class is easy. Come to class, write the 4 required papers and you're golden. He does go on tangents that have little to do with anything but who cares. I got an A- and read only 2 of the 8 required plays (Spark Notes). Take him.
Prof. Soljan is an incredibly nice guy. He's terrible with returning papers on time though.. so any paper due after the first is turned in will have the deadline pushed back repeatedly. You may think that sounds nice, but really it's a pain because you don't know how you're doing in the class. I managed an A but wouldn't recommend the class.
Super nice guy. If you write your papers with his opinion in mind, you'll do great. He grades poorly concerning grammar...meaning, he likes to stick in commas where they DO NOT belong. Easy class...you can sparknote your way through it.
He was a nice guy, but as a professor, he's a bit all over the place. Typical lectures included the philosophy of life and other things not at all related to the play we were currently reading or the upcoming paper. All in all, an easy class and a fairly easy prof as long as you can write decent papers.
One of the nicest profs ever. Gets off topic a lot, but manages to present tons of insightful ideas (which are almost never about the curriculum itself.) If you want to encounter someone with an interesting perspective on life, he's great. Actually being on topic with the curriculum is not his strong suit. Still, he's a really awesome guy.
I really like this guy, but we watch way too many dry and boring-to-tears movies that sometimes have little to do with the material. Also, I emailed him constantly about my paper about whether it was what he was looking for and he kept saying yes, yet when the paper was returned, I got a B- with a comment saying that I was completely off-topic
Very sweet guy. The class was pretty interesting except for the movies. They are extremely boring! (and there is one almost every class) He is pretty fair with grading papers.
Great Professor! TAKE HIS CLASS, you will learn much about Shakespeare and also have fun doing it, while learning about philosophy and life. Not the normal professor, very inspiring and caring about students
easy class. he cared about students and understood that this class was taken for university credit rather than interest in the subject. tells you exactly what he wants in his papers. overall good GenEd to take.
Great prof. He makes mythology bearable, and I had no interest at all in it before this class. Takes a while to grade papers, but tells you what he expects and is willing to help you if you need it. I would highly recommend taking this prof.
He is amazingly easy and always cheerful. We only wrote three papers all year, one was the midterm and another was the final. I would strongly suggest taking him.
what a joke! didnt read a single book because we didn't really have to. watched movies all the time. tough grader on papers and basically slops on a grade. returns papers back VERY late. we got first paper back maybe 2 months after we turned it in. got 2nd paper back during finals week. goes on tangents about life and stuff unrelated to the topic.
He was just an amazing teacher. A lot of fun, very helpful, and very easy too. I did get a bit confused at times, but he cleared it up as long as I asked. Great guy overall and I learned a lot. : )
I looove this prof. I have taken him 3 times now and I'm taking him again next year. He's such a nice guy, and gives you just 3 papers over the semester. People who say you don't learn anything from him are retarded, just because he doesn't give you busy work doesn't mean he doesn't do his job. Amazing prof!
I could not stand this class. I love Shakespeare and was so excited going in and I was completely disappointed. We barely talked about the plays and just watched the movies most of the time. He went on tangents about nothing related to the topic. Only had 3 papers which was nice but took FOREVER to return them.
JOKE JOKE JOKE!!! I did NOT like this class!! By the middle of the semester I had to start bringing in homework for other classes in order to stay awake. He seems like a cool guy... just not so much as a prof...
Awesome personality, but when it comes to teaching..not so much. Only had 3 papers over all the plays we read which was nice, but he takes an awfully long time to return them. I didn't read one single play..we watched movies for most of them and just sparknotes did the trick for me. Got an A- in the class without ever opening the book. Tough grader
Professor Soljan has a great personality and is genuinely likable. If not for his attendance policy, going to class would be rather pointless though. Our entire grade was based on 2 5-page papers, which he graded rather leniently. Not a very challenging course.
This prof never handed us a syllabus... he doesn't use blackboard... I've handed in two papers all year. Tomorrow is the last regular school day, and I still haven't gotten one of my papers back. I wrote one paper before midterm and only received it back yesterday. The prof seems like a nice guy but the class is a joke
Anyone who dislikes this teacher is a dualistic idiot. He teaches you things that not every college prof will but should. He goes deeper than teachers who rely on rote memorization and takes teaching to a personal, more experience related level. Amazing prof, amazing man.
This class was an utter waste of time. All he did was talk, often about things that had nothing to do with the class. He was only interested in hearing his own opinion; there was no room for students to do their own critical thinking. No syllabus. He was always late to class. We wrote 3 papers and he graded very leniently. Not recommended.
Never knew what was going on, two thumbs down.
I dont enjoy Shakespeare but Ivo makes it easy to understand. Read the book, or read them online. Papers are easy...but HE TEARS YOUR PAPER UP. Harsh but good. I'll recommend him.
NOT RECOMMENDED if you want to learn about mythology. I took this class with no prior knowledge of mythology, and really didn't learn any of the stories, so when he decided to talk about random bits of stories I had no idea what he was talking about. Always late to class. and rarely talks about things that are relevant. mostly just life.
This class was super super easy. It was kind of hard to make myself go bc i didn't learn a ton, but it's always nice to have one class you can breeze through. Watched a lot of movies. Didn't read any of the stories, yet aced the class.
His opinion is very valuable. He's super helpful. Also, the first time I visited his office, he gave me a writing handbook. He has a good sense of humor, and I chose him as my adviser. If I could take every class with Soljan, I would. There are not enough great things I can say. Great personality and attitude...You NEED to take a class with Ivo!
Late to class every single day. Didn't give a syllabus until over half way through the semester. Grades more on style than content even after saying he "doesn't want a formal paper". Talks in circles and nothing ties back together. Confusing and only useful for doing homework for other classes. Nice guy, horrible teacher.
The class wasn't too difficult, but I don't feel like I learned very much. He often talked in circles, and got off subject from what we were supposed to be learning. He wasn't that great of a teacher, but he has a nice personality.
He was always late, would go off on tangents for the whole class about random things. Took forever to get papers back to you. I learned nothing at all. I would recommend taking the class with another professor if possible.
I learned so much from this professor, and he is a sweetheart to boot.
Great man, horrible professor. Made me rethink my English major. Only reason I went to class was because he took attendance (not that it mattered anyway) and because he doesn't use blackboard so class is the only way to know what you need to do. Took 3 months to get our papers back and provided little feedback. Take someone else if possible.
Nice person, terrible professor. He is awful at getting papers back to students - I have been waiting over three months to receive one two page paper. He does not stick to the topic, and hardly touched on much of English in the course. Take anyone else unless you want to feel excessive anxiety in regards to due dates.
This class was extremely dry. The professor assigned 3 papers in the entire semester and two of them were due the week of finals. Over the semester the class never received their first assignment back even though he always said he'd bring it "next time". I do not recommend taking this class if you want to learn about literature.
Not great. The class conversations, though somewhat interesting, were often off topic. I took this for my SWS requirement and wrote 3 papers, none of which I received back before finals. I never knew what grade I had. No syllabus and no blackboard. Sometimes he would make jokes about how dumb Americans are. Take him if you need a blow off class.
Great guy, but not a great Prof. He's going to be retiring next year, so these last few ratings reflect the fact that he is obviously on his way out the door. And my rating will be for naught, as the number of students he'll have to teach dwindles...
The greatest professor I have had here. His class is different from all other courses, he might be a little unorganized but I think it's good to be out of the ordinary. We all need a little change. He teaches life lessons. Kind, smart, intelligent. Easy A if you are generally a good student.
He is incredibly interesting. He loves to tell stories and get to know you. As far as the class goes: super easy. He gave us like four papers to write with clear rubrics. He mostly just wants good grammar and such. Definitely recommend him.
He is an interesting person, just not a great prof. He is very disorganized and takes forever getting papers back. He can also be incredibly offensive. Some of his stories are interesting, but he is often off topic and you spend the entire class period talking about it. I liked the material of this class but this prof wasn't the best.
I took Professor Soljan for World Lit to fulfill a Gen Ed. Really nice guy and an easy A. Lectures were boring as we read through the book every class. Only a few in class assignments and 3 papers all year. I wrote all 3 the night before and still got A's on them. As far as an SWS, this class was a breeze. I skipped class a few times too.
We had 3 papers as our only grades for the semester. If you're a semi-decent writer, it's an easy A. He might present strong opinions, and even if you don't agree it's best to say you do while writing papers to get a better grade. Lectures are pretty boring, attendance not always necessary. Overall: Easy but Boring
He is a nice person for the most part however he can be really offensive. The class itself is extremely boring and I can truly say I learned virtually nothing from this class except for this mans point of view on the world. Does not care for anyone else's opinions except for his own and will cut you off mid sentence. Easy class not good prof
He may get off topic occasionally in class but very clear on what he expects. Understands students have busy lives and is there for you if you need help and will accommodate to help. I would take him again in a heartbeat
Professor Soljan is kinda boring. He takes a long time to discuss one piece of literature and wanders from the topic a lot. For an SWS class, it was low on writing; there are only 3 papers and the last one counts as the final. He is understanding but very opinionated. Show up to class and you will pass.
Overall Ivo is a great guy, but I didn't learn anything in the class. Easy A, but he goes off in his own little world half the time so I spent my time in the class drawing. He assigns papers that may seem daunting, but just spark note the readings and you'll get the info and A's on your papers.
Goes off on tangents. Hard to connect lecture to papers he requires. Spark notes are more helpful for writing the papers. If you've had humanities 101 there isn't anything new here.
Dr. Soljan is a wonderful professor. Give great feedback on papers, doesn't give tons of homework and he genuinely cares about his students and their well being. You can tell that he has a passion for teaching and the subjects. His lectures as long, but very interesting and he's hilarious! I highly recommend him!
Currently in this class and regret taking it. If you miss a day you have to write an "apology letter;" he gets really butt hurt. Doesn't use blackboard. When he "teaches" its just him going off on a tangent about a random subject not related to mythology. I am usually good in class but not this one. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
This class was by no means difficult. He gives three absences until grade deductions occur, but you can write a formal letter to have them adjusted baring a good reason. The lectures do drone on, but show up and act like you care and it'll benefit you. He let me turn in my paper two weeks late because I explained my situation and showed him respect
Good news: He's an easy grader, and you can miss class without it being a big deal. Bad news: He never uses Blackboard, you aren't given a syllabus, and there is absolutely no class discussion (it's all lecture). My advice: Put some effort into the three papers, and it's an easy A.
Ivo was wonderful! You can tell he truly loves what he does and has a passion for teaching. His lectures are tangents but they literally always connect, and if you pay attention you could learn a great deal about life. He is so understanding, just go talk with him about it! I bought the text book an never used it, just use google Graded by 2 papers
He is a really interesting professor. Classes are spent reading the pieces so you really don't have to read out of class and there is no participation necessary. He doesn't use BB which is annoying cause you don't know how you're doing. He is a really nice guy though and you only write 3 papers. That's your grade right there.
I loved Dr. Soljan as a person, but I hated being in his class. I dreaded going to class because it was so unstructured and hard to follow what was going on. The only grades were 3 papers that everyone seemed to get an A on, which was nice, but I do not feel like I have learned anything about mythology overall. Class was not worth my time or money.
Just a warning, he doesn't use blackboard at all. Doesn't even bother to set it up. Definitely takes attendance, but is never on time for class. His lectures are very hard to follow as he goes on tangents quite often, so my advice if you take him is to keep all papers he passes out and just use sparknotes and you'll be fine!
If you are looking for an easy A, this class is it. There were 3 papers we had to write, he says at the beginning that there are 5 but he pushes dates back and you only get through the first 3. If you meet the requirements on them and try just a little bit you will pass with most likely an A.
He's crazy but amusing. Don't bother doing the reading because you never talk about it and he tells you what evidence to use in your papers. I took him as a 6-9 and just worked on other class stuff on my laptop the whole time while he rambled incoherently. Also, it takes months to get your papers back.
if you've ever watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding, he is the father from that movie. Most classes he tells you the root of words. Not mandatory but he takes attendance and will eventually ask you to start coming. Graded on 3 papers that every one gets an A on. Doesn't set up blackboard and comes 15 minutes late to every class. The funniest emailer.
He doesn't use Blackboard at all, rarely uses his emails (it's a struggle to get in contact at all), and his syllabus has next to no information that is needed, ESPECIALLY the Final Exam (a paper) and when it's due. He calls people out just on the way they dress, doesn't really give a crap about his class, and doesn't like showing up on time ever.
I went an entire semester in Ivo's World Mythology course, and never learned a single thing about mythology. He stands in front of the class and talks about whatever pops into his head. Nice and charismatic guy, but it became hard to make myself show up, as I knew it would be just another day of random tangents.
Super nice guy. That being said, it is SO boring. I learned basically nothing about mythology and dreaded going to class because it was so hard to sit through. Easy A, only 3 papers and no homework. Attendance isn't mandatory. Take if you want an easy way out, do NOT take if you want an engaging class.
The class is very easy, show up & get an A. There are 3 papers throughout the semester and he gives A's on all of them. He can get off track, but he has experienced many things and can add humor to anything. He is always very happy and truly cares about his students. If you want an easy class and you don't care about actually learning, take him.
He rambles, but is very knowledgeable on many, many topics. Paper topics can be confusing, but you can write anything and you'll get an A. Lectures are usually boring. I don't think anyone reads the book, you don't really need it. If you're looking for an easy class with a nice prof, this is it. Don't take this if you're interested in world myth.
Never set up a blackboard, never got a syllabus, never had a Zoom meeting, claimed everything he created was somehow deleted by BB?? Would only teach by email. Then we get an email after 2 months from the English department that he is being replaced for the course, and he sends an email about his retirement, don't know if that's true. ??? sus
