Very difficult to follow and understand. Expects first year students to be flawless in composition and speech! On tests some of the questions are deceiving and tricky. The language Spanish (ME)is the only way for her - she will not bend on any of the "rules". It's her way or the highway.
Very helpful. Difficult to study but great explanations. Visuals really help. Consistency in class really helps. She's nice and likes her work. If you study and do your work you'll do well.
She's great! The best professor I ever got. She is smart, explains well and is always ready to teach. She really enjoys her work and is always ready to help. She is demanding, but you really learn a lot.
(Online) I took her class because I took her husband's (Mr. Leavell) Span 111 class and he was AWESOME. She is MUCH harder, and unwavering on her methods. She is a perfectionist and you will struggle unless you are fluent in the language. She is VERY nice, but hard.

She is avery good teacher. She is one of the few who explains very clearly. She's always there to help you if needed. You have to work in the class and languages are not easy but she helps you to practice and explains well. She's always smiling with a great attitude. She always treats students with respect.

I took her online class. a lot to learn but she was great. She responded very quick all my emails and was great during live sessions. Gives great feedback. I have taken other online classes and I hardly got any feedback or hardly got a response to my emails. She was great and even met with me to explain what I could not understand.
I took this class online as it was all I could fit into my schedule. Obviously not ideal for a language, but she made it nearly impossible. I met with her after my fist test and we spoke mostly about how busy she was grading students' work. She didn't get our grades or comments back on our oral recordings until the day our next exam was due.
I took the hybrid course because that's the only class she was teacher. I loved her so much for 111. Just like in 111, Ivonne is very nice, thorough and helpful. I wouldn't suggest taking this as a hybrid though, esp. if you aren't comfortable with spanish. All in all an easy class for me and she makes you feel comfortable
I don't recommend taking this teacher for any level. The teacher frequently skips letters in the words she writes, and the tests result aren't clear. It's hard to learn when you don't know what you did wrong. She doesn't explain right. I already had some Spanish background, so it wasn't hard, but if you are a beginne don't take the class.
She was great! I learned so much this semester. She was very helpful and always replied to my emails very quickly. She was right on top of things and gave great feedback. She met with me every time I needed help except once when she couldn't meet my schedule, but she was great at helping me by email anyway. Materials were very good for learning!
I took Span211 online. She has really been great and gives great feedback. She's very nice and always helps you if you ask. Because of my schedule it is difficult to meet with her but somehow she always tried to make time to help even if it is by phone (none of my other professors online ever called me or gave much feedback).I really learned a lot
This teacher is probably one of the worst I have ever had. I took her hybrid course and she only emailed us a couple of times the whole semester. Her tests have constanlty grammar errors, and I didn't feel like I learned anything. I have to re-take this class, not because I'm lazy but because the class was very confusing. Don't take her.
I recently took this class because it was the only left, against my friend's advice. It was a huge mistake because I didn't get anything from it, and Mrs' Leavell wasn't a very helpful teacher. her tests were confusing and so were her lessons. I regret taking her and not waiting 'til next semester because I had to pay for a below average educator.
I had to take this teacher because she was the only one available online and it's unfortunate 'cause she's not good. I am a native speaker and have been for 20 years, yet she gave me a C grade. She seems to dislike that I corrected her in some mistakes she made, and I feel bad for non-speakers 'cause they don't really know what she's teaching.
Good teacher. Moves fast so you have to do a LOT of studying on your own with the website and book, but its college, so what do you expect? The only problem I have is that she does not keep order in the class very well... lots of students constantly chattering among themselves and distracting the rest of us.
Great teacher. She has really motivated me to keep learning Spanish. She is great to help students who need it. Class moves fast but all classes move at the same pace in the same level in the college. Her explanations make it very easy to understand. As an online student, she's always ready to help if needed.
Mrs. Leavell is freakin awesome haha :) if you are interested in learning spanish at all or taking the class she will help you the whole time with all of it the only thing you have to do is always come to class and always be prepared.. She is friendly to everyone and her husband is also a good Spanish teacher too :) my favorite class from Csn.

Excellent professor. You know what is required from the beginning. Very clear requirements and answers very quickly any question you might have. She's always willing to meet with students if necessary and it's really helpful. Materials are really good if used well.
Great online class. Well organized and very clear expectations. Online you need to be a pro-active student, but there are many resources to be used. The professor was great at answering all my questions and answered all my emails very fast. She was right on. Great comments and always motivating to continue. Very positive and fun attitude!
Great professor. I had her for Span 111 last Spring in class. She explained things very well and everyone knew what to expect. I was not the best student but she really helped me taking time to explain thing (out of class if necessary) and to increase my grade. I did well even when I was not great. She just makes you feel comfortable.

I have this professor online right now. She has been very good and clear about her expectations and work from the beginning. She's very helpful and very quick and efficient to respond to my emails, in fact, she has surprised me. I wish all online professors would be as good to explain and help as she is.
Great teacher and course. Course very well organized and she gives you options for grading (there is room for errors since in several areas only highest scores count). Text easy to follow. She's very helpful when you ask her for help. She responded emails very quickly.
Yvonne is a great teacher. She is kind, helpful, respectful, & just a great lady all around. Easy course if you study or are a native speaker.

I'm so over this prosessor! Worst spanish teacher I have ever had. She takes weeks to grade your work so you have no idea where you are with your grade. She doesn't understand or speak clear enough english to answer your questions properly. It's so frusterating ! Maybe she would be better in person, but her online class is terrible.
Ivonne is a great teacher. She's open to helping people and she teaches a lot of facts about Spanish-speaking countries. She can spend a lot of time talking about unrelated things, but overall she's a good teacher.
Excellent teach. She has spend so much time helping me when she did not have to. If you seek her help she'll do anything to help you understand and study. Most students getting good grades unless they are really lazy. She really goes of of her way to help any student who asks
Took her class online. With the transition to a new system there were a lot of "mistakes" that she blamed on anyone but herself. I didn't like the condescending manner in which she spoke to me. She didn't know how to use system at all during live classes which were a mess to say the least. Didn't like her style at all.
Pofr Leavell was an excellent teacher. She has high expectations but extremely fair to grade. Most students I know got very good Final grades. She was extremely helpful even though all teachers were going through a new system. ALL my professors had problems with the new Canvas system since it was the first semester used. She handled things great!
I'm a pre-med student who has gotten A's in classes like organic chemistry. There is no reason that this course should be more difficult than an advanced science course: her expectations are ridiculous. The college would be better off hiring Rosetta Stone. She does nothing (just says read the book), teaches nothing and is condescending. DO NOT TAKE
Excellent professor. She was extremely helpful and thanks to the help I got I did great. She's always willing to help when you ask for help and her explanations really help. There was so much material we had to study from that I could go on and on. Because of her help I did great!
Great class and professor. She makes the class fun, but her explanations are especially very helpful. She's always willing to help any time you need and ask for help and is great answering questions and helping you in class, out of class and online. She has a great attitude and loves what she does. She gives great feedback.

I feel the assignments she gave sometimes were redundant but it did help reaffirm the concepts. The online class just simply has a lot of time consuming work. She has a policy that she doesn't respond to e-mails after 5pm, weekends, and holidays. Which since this was an online class at a community college it was odd to me. She is good overall.
Horrible teacher! Gives decent feedback, but requires significantly more work than other professors. I was a straight A student until my oral final didn't save, and she REFUSED to let me make it up...and it was 20% of my overall grade! She also grades written assignments extremely hard. She is REALLY tough on non-native speakers!
This is the second time I take a class with Profr. Leavell online. To be honest she is extremely fair with grades and gives great feedback. She's always ready to help if you ask and helps you any time you need it as long as you let her know. She always tries to work with you. In fact, I want to wait until she teaches the next course to take it.
I have also taken Pofr. Leavell twice. She has been great and excellent to work with. I'm not a native speaker at all, but if you want help you just need to ask. I have never felt a difference in treatment for not being a native speaker, but I can tell you she gives great explanations. If she has to, she makes any necessary corrections to help you
Honestly, Profr.Leavell was extremely helpful when I needed the help. There is no way in our class to know who gets a specific grade, so there is no way to know if she's easier toward anyone. She gives very specific good feedback that most love (I did). Talking to some students in class, she was more than fair and even generous with final grades.
Very good teacher! I learned a lot and she was always helpful when a student had a question or concern. Wish she taught higher up classes in person rather than online. Great teacher and great experience
Profr Leavell was great. She is more than generous with final grades and helping students. She answered all my emails very quickly even at midnight or 1-3 in the morning. She doesn't answer on weekends, but she will if there it's an urgent message. She was great. Hope she can teach higher courses. She's very consistent and doesn't make preferences.
Great teacher! I took her class during the Summer and she was extremely helpful to meet with me and answered ALL my questions. Very few professors do that. She was very generous with Final grades.I'm not a native speaker and she made it much easier :)
She is not a good professor whatsoever. I do not suggest taking this classprofessor if you are horrible at Spanish, you will do nothing but fail the course and not even learn the language. This course is poorly set up. It is set up for you to fail.
She will go out the way to help you. The homework is all online and accessed through a code you get with the book you buy and cannot rent because of that. I recommend doing the homework before you cover the section in class. She follows the syllabus for testdue dates, only grades the best 4 of 5 sections of homework, partners you up each class.
She is one of the most fair teachers I know. You work to learn and she always offers help. Extremely fair with final grades. She always discounts lowest scores. You know what you get into from the very beginning. I learned a lot and she really motivated me and helped me to finish. Great knowledge and goes out of her way to explain something.
Pfr Leavell is a great teacher. You do have to work in class, but she is extremely fair with students and treats them all the same. She's a native speaker and is very specific helping. If you ask for help she tries to make her schedule work to help. I was happy and surprised about how generous she is with Final grades without giving them away.
Mrs. Leavell is a cool lady, but I probably would have taken a different teacher if I had the chance. She is a native Spanish speaker, and sometimes I feel like she explains stuff kind of weird. Like she skips over stuff and doesn't understand that non-native speakers don't know this and wouldn't understand without a lot of explanation.
Fast paced class with plenty of weekly assignments. It was a 6 week course and I was busy every day for the entire 6 weeks with all the work assigned. Not a hard class if you're motivated and dedicated.
Excellent teacher! She knows well her subject and is willing to help any student who needs it. Very specific grading and very understanding in Final Grades. Extremely fair to all, native and non-natives. I wish she would teach other sections too. Clear expectations. You know what you are for since day one. Learned a lot.
I learned with this teacher what I had never learned before in 5 years studying Spanish before. Very good explanations and very willing to help or answer any questions. She's a native speaker and knows very well her area with lots of experience.
Do NOT take her class unless you're a native speaker. Her expectations are very high and she grades harshly. She's condescending to students. She doesn't give any leniency on technical issues whatsoever, so one little mistake can destroy your grade. She accused me of cheating on something I didn't cheat on, gave me a 0, and it ruined my grade!

Pretty terrible online class. Then again, you shouldnt expect much for an online language class. Tough on the written portions of the tests and the orals. Demands "mastery" and Only gives you 15 minutes to do the final oral and only one topic, so you have to immediately know exactly what to say and check the recording. Youre largely on your own.
Now I see what everyone's talking about. It takes her about a month to grade assignments, then she rips them apart for not being perfect. Nitpicks people's written assignments for every little thing, yet makes frequent spelling/grammatical errors herself. If Ms. Hernandez taught was teaching this class, I would have avoided her like the plague.
Terrible language teacher; tough grader and very condescending. Her syllabus is very unclear. For someone who makes constant grammatical mistakes in English you would think she might be more understanding of her student's mistakes but she isn't. Written and oral requirements are weighted & will drag down your grade even if you ace everything else.
Pros: -is a native speaker -requires 2/4 live lessons and oral assignments -extra credit practice final exam is worth 100 pts one assignment/test Cons: -will blame students for her own technical problems -has bad English grammar -does not give specific feedback, only general feedback -takes until the end of the year to post grades
She was extremely helpful. I'm not a native speaker, but every time I needed help and asked, she was very nice to give me very specific answers and meet with me to help me. Always ready to help. Very Generous with Final grades.

She's not easy and she'll make you study your butt off but she's a great teacher and she cares that you understand the material. I liked her a lot, I would def take a class from her again. Just make sure you're on time because she'll ding you, I hated that part... LOL

You could honestly do the online assignment and learn better from that rather than going to her lectures. She rants and rambles a lot and goes on and on into tangents. Shes a nice person and all. Shes a native speaker, but it could get confusing at time. If you can learn on your own, this class would be pretty easy. Attendance was was req. xtra crd
Offers a ton of extra credit. She drops the lowest test, hw assignment, and 2 oral recordings. Anytime I had a question, she answered in a good amount of time. She's not very understanding about Canvas acting up, so make sure everything is working. LOT of homework but not hard at all. Best thing was when she curved the final. Went from 86 to 94!
6 week summer course. Had about 80 hw assignments, a reading/comprehension quiz, a lesson test, and oral due for the first 4 weeks. Is tough on the written for Lesson tests. Offers lots of extra credit and drops the lowest of each type of assignment. Curved Written final and is EXTREMELY generous for Oral final. Answered my questions. Great prof!
Great professor. Always ready to help when needed. Excellent feedback specially at the beginning to do better later. If I needed help before an assignment was graded or needed verification on something she was great to respond. It is a class where you can learn and have to work. You have to work for grade, but very generous with grading at the end.
Condescending Impossible to pass NEVER taker her
Terrible teacher. Takes forever to grade assignments. Grades them out of order so you can't get good feedback on the earlier assignments to improve yourself. Her English grammar is terrible and her instructions are unclear and extremely lengthy and wordy. She assigns an inordinate amount of work and is extremely nitpicky on grading.
Prof. Leavell is a really enjoyable professor. The textbook is used every class and the entire course is based off of it so it is easy to stay current and ahead so in class participation is easier. Attendance policy is decent. One freebee then -1% per day you are absent. She is a really cool professor, definitely would take again.
Professor Leavell is an excellent teacher. She always tries to help her online students and makes appointments outside her hours to help students who need it She was an amazing to help me when I needed and if I needed immediate feedback, she would be very specific and responded very quickly. She always addresses quickly any issues or questions.
Pofessor Ivonne Leavell was great. I would take her any time again. She always gave clear explanations, always nice and helpful to ALL students and flexible to help anyone who needed it. Yes, you have to work like in any Language class but I learned what I never learned in High School. She made it easy to understand unless you never studied.
If there is any other prof teaching 112 take him/her. I'm an A student and barely got a C+. Grades harshly and gave me the worst out of state testing experience of my life. I had to fight to take my test! Her english is so broken even the person conducting my proctored exams had troubles understanding her instructions. Worst class I've taken at CSN
Excellent professor. Helps every time you need help. The problem is some students never ask for help. She'll help with anything. She has very clear and specific guidelines. Great at explaining things when asked. Getting the right help made an amazing difference.
Professor Ivonne Leavell is a great professor. It was not an easy class, but neither any language class I have taken if it was a serious class. There is work to do and you have to pace yourself. She is thrill in her grading & gives excellent feedback that helps you learn. She gives extra credit and leaves room for unexpected situations. Very Fair!
This amazing professor really helped me when I started struggling in class. She told us to reach out to her to see if she was serious. She was more than serious. She met with me every week to help me and answered and explained every single question I had and helped me to do much better. We hardarly find professors like her now days
Professor Leavell is one of the best professor I have ever had. She is not only a great teacher but a great human being. I did not do better in class due to my own issues. However, I could not have asked for someone better and more attentive. She's very professional and explains clearly and never minds to explain Twice or respond to any questions.
If you can take someone please save yourself and do. I am a bit of a Spanish speaker and i struggled with her tests . They are timed and have way too many questions to even attempt. She does not communicate with you unless you reach out. And instead of answering a simple questions she leads you to the sylabus. Her class is not worth the stress

Professor Leavell was excellent helping me with any questions I had. She met with me in person any time I needed to get specific feedback and help after she had given specific comments in her grading. She has always been very nice and I just wish she would teach the next level too. I am really learning well. You have to work, but you really learn.
I made this account just let you guys know how terrifying my experience was in this class. I regretted every single moment in this class, and I learned nothing. Please take my advice. I was the one like your guys ignoring negative comments about her. Oh btw your final is 40% of the overall grade so try to memorize the whole textbook.
She stated on the syllabus the required book that was needed for the class and further emailed everyone 2 that it was the correct book. After opening my book and checking the online assignments, IT WAS THE WRONG BOOK! She refused to take any responsiblity for the misinformation on all platforms(syllabus/emails). guess what CANT RETURN ONCE OPENED!
The worst professor ever! She needs to aware that not all students are native Spanish speakers. She expects you to speak like you were from Mexico or something. She would say things like you don't even know a basic sentence in front of other students. Her English is hard to understand as well as her instruction for the assignments.
I had trouble with an exam so I emailed her immediately after and she replied it could not be fixed. Days later I receive an email saying I could make up the exam so I responded yes. She replied she sent that email to the wrong student. A week later she tells me I could make it up before the end of the day but I was already at work and had no time
Avoid at all cost! I registered to write about this horrible experience. IGraduated from CSN with High Honors and looks like I won't pass this class! Never had a teacher like that in my life. Her final is 40% percent with oral exam, and she did nothing to prepare us for it! I attended all 4 live sessions and she just talks about her life for hours.
You basically teach yourself through VHL central, she doesn't teach you. She did not grade tests for almost 2 months, no review, no feedback. Very lengthy instructions lacking clarity. She is Spanish and expects you to be fluent. You can learn more on YouTube. I am A/B student and this is my first time I am failing the class. Bummer..
Be prepared to learn through VHL Central only then be graded extremely harshly when theres been no review. If I wanted to learn Spanish with no human (via Zoom) interaction, Id download Duolingo. Oh, and the final exam is worth 40% of your grade so even if you participate in the live sessions and do every assignment, you can still fail.
This lady is the absolute worse person posing as a teacher I've ever had. A real teacher actually teaches and helps you. I DO NOT recommend this class. She treats you like you're a disease if you're not a native Spanish speaker.
I don't know what words could describe how awful of a professor she is. She didn't even grade my assignments until I changed my Canvas picture to a close up picture of my face! I had to change it 4 times because the other pictures of myself didn't "fit her requirements" and she still hasn't graded them. Not to mention the 8+ hours of homework.
This was the worst experience I have ever had with an instructor. I would not even give her the credit of being a true teacher. All of the speaking portions of her course are timed recordings and there is definitely not enough time to record them. If you don't already speak Spanish, DO NOT take her class.
Professor Leavell has been one of the best I had. Shes been not only nice but available to help me even outside of working hours. When asked for help, she always tried to do it and answered all my questions. Shes very specific with due dates, but great extra credit opportunities too. Very generous with grades.
Take this class alone don't add a 2nd or 3rd.. seriously, if you aren't a 4 out of 10 spanish speaker avoid this class like a alligator swamp, for a starters spanish class it felt like upper intermediate, most of your work will be through VHLcentral online requiring tons of work teaching yourself, test are in Video/Audio get rdy for Hell on earth.
Prof Leavell excepts you to be completely fluent in the Spanish language. She actually commented on my oral assignment and told me to work on my accent. I could barely understand her when she spoke english so she should take her own advice. Also, get ready to basically teach your self online. Her summer class had 15+ hrs of hw and tests a week.
Professor Leavell is an excellent teacher. It's obvious that disgruntled students are rating here. She has the best attitude and always smiling. Helped answering ALL my questions even out of working hours when needed. I'm a Spanish major with little Spanish, however, I just hope to be one day half as goos as she is. Thanks Professor!!
She is terrible for online classes. She will use programs that are just more ways to get money out of you. If i wanted to learn Spanish from a program I wouldn't have spent so much money for this class. Warning, Her online is a rob when you compare the prices for a similar program.
Professor Leavell has been great. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. She has been extremely helpful and accessible to all students. She is more than fair with grades, grading and extre credit. I've never given one of these feedbacks before but I've never had such a horrible professor. She emails you every day a novel in all caps, "IMPORTANT MUST READ," and it's all the same stuff she emails you every day. She acts like she's your grandmother, but she has no idea how to teach. In the online classes, she doesn't even pretend.
Professor Leavell is amazing! The course is homework heavy, but is manageable for the most part. She is very willing to help anyone who needs it, and is so nice and fosters a safe learning environment. You can tell she likes her job and does it well. She also gives excellent feedback on oral exams. The material is hard but she makes it better!
I took her for summer 2022 and even tho the class is easy, but it is homework ready and you need to stay on track, there are 3 live sessions that you need to participate. Oral lectura that you need to do and you need to make sure that your computer works well if not then itll hurt your grade pretty bad. But other than that she is a great professor
