One of the best professors/teachers ever had. He's a funny guy and makes his lectures interesting with anecdotes...if you do work you'll come through great. Like he says, he just facilitates your journey..you got to do the work
He's an alright guy. Tends to pick on some students...if you dont like that kind of attention, do your work and listen up during lectures. The class is interesting and fun. Dont confuse his attitude about student attendance with his passion for the work. If you need him he's around...

If you dont like to study do not take his class! He expects every one of his students to perform at a certain level and if you are willing to learn and study hard you will enjoy his class. He basically teaches straight from the book, but you still must pay attention in class; not a lot of A's.
i pretty much agree w/ everyone else...it is straightforward but you really have to be about your business because he likes to give quizzes that can really affect your grade at the end--read/take notes before class because he likes to put you on the spot
He is a great professor, he is stern and down to earth. He tells you what you need to know, and what you need to do.
He gave extremely difficult tests. In addition to this he required to much out of a introductory course.

I took prof. Livingston last year and the problem with his class is that there was too much tedious studying to do. He is the type of professor that likes to include anything that has been said in class. Your best set is to avoid him at all cost or if you are already in his class takes notes on every word that comes out of his mouth and take down #'s to the decimal or it will be wrong on his test.

If only i could understand him, maybe I would have done better. Nice guy, but yes it is true the tests r soooooo damn hard!
This class is good if you really want to learn. I enjoyed it my freshman year and I'm doing pretty well. He has quizes on Blackboard.com every week and in class gives long in-depth lectures on the Chapter we are studying. If you read the text and take notes, then you'll do fine.
Go to Starbucks before this class or your stress book will become your pillow. Lectures are amusing at times but overall his voice might as well be a lullaby to send you to sleep. Exams are ridiculously detailed. Studying is a must. Makes you buy his book on stress cause there is no other way for him to make a profit from it.
He's teaches life experiences of course outside of sociology it's interesting, but it's hard to understand him sometimes because of his accent.
To sum it up just don't take him. His class will definitely make your GPA go down.
He is very hard to understand because he speaks really fast. His class is pure common-sense.. I don't even know why anyone would attend the actual class. He wrote one of the textbooks you have to buy which in my opinion is a conspiracy... He's just not a good teacher.
He was hard to understand and I stopped coming to class everyday some time in November and actually went up in my test scores. Just read your book and use the quizzes from blackboard as your test review and you'll be alright.
This dude will put you to sleep real fast! I know from personal experience... At least he's sexy though!!!! And he's oddly obsessed with tigers, so much that he's got one tattoed on his forearm.
Livingston is NOT flexible, NOT accessible, and does everything throught his TAs. Ans his tests SUCK!!
Hard to Understand. He makes you buy a coloring which he claims is a stress book..but whatever. Read the Book and take good notes...stay at home or in your dorm...he is a waste of time and money.
He means well but this class is not worth taking. His test are too detailed and the online tests that you get every day it seems is just stressful. Also the stress book is a waste of money...he just want people to buy his book.lol. He is kind of cute for an old guy tho. Every class he says "by de way" it just sounds funny with his accent
Livingston is not as hard as most people say. I took his class 3 semesters ago and i loved it. He has an accent, but if you are at Howard you should have gotten used to a Jamaican accent by now. He has daily quizzes......which you do over until you get 100% so how bad can that be.....it is made to help the students. Go to class, read and you're ok
This class forced you to learn since he gave online blackboard quizzes. It made it easier for you to remember stuff - plus he brought back some of the exact questions for the midterm & final exam. He always gives a bonus section on "Facts" that he mentioned in class & this allows you to make up marks if you forgot some of the other stuff in the exa
This class is a waste of time, all he does is tach from the book. and add his facts in it. the stress book is a waste o money and time as well as sitting in the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
you will only have an issue with this teacher if you do not do the assigned blackboard quizzes or attend class.. Dr. Livingston gives you all the tools to succeed, the rest is up to you.
Ivor was cool! He is really attractive for an older guy and his accent is not difficult to understand. His tests are not HARD but they are DETAILED. He provides the tools to get ahead and the weekly quizzes are tedious but helpful. Overall he is a GREAT professor! I got an A out of the class but don't take him if ur not willing to WORK for an A.
unable to help me with scheduling problems & class difficutly
He was hard to understand at the beginning of the semester. You do have to read & take notes. Online quizzes are good. You could do them over until you get 100% (which is all he accepts). He's a nice guy. I was an hour late for the final and he still allowed me to take it. His TA even gave me an extra hour and 15 minutes to complete it.
attendance is a **** when it comes to his class. i had a family emergency and my grade was affected buy it but other than that he is easy. just pay attention. he is accent is VERY STRONG
The key to success in Livingston's class is getting to know him. 99% of his classes are overcrowded to the max, so "being" just a number to him won't cut it. Seeing him during office hours is a plus. Act like you're sincere mabout passing even if you're not. One thing that helped me was e-mailing him a lot. He's not THAT bad, but he does have flaws
If you have a great work ethic and a desire to learn about sociology, then you will do fine! His class is challenging, but not impossible. I recieved an A in his class, and would take him again. He was very knowledgable about his subject, but does not show favoratism to no one. His class is all about "numbers" so if you work hard you will get As
Not extemly hard if you do the work his all about numbers. if you do the work you"ll be ok
Attendance isn't mandatory but he takes it. Classes are large, not really hard, you just have to be willing to do the work. Get online quizzes, annoying but they REALLY help, he uses some of the questions on the tests. Gives some extra credit, and I think he tries to make himself seem a lot meaner than he is. Has an accent. TAs teach sometimes.
Prof. Livingston class is not a joke he wants you to know the material from front page to back page. Coming to class is a must because it's part of the grade and his exams have bouns questions about things he discusses in class so it's a must to attend class. Overall if you study you should do well. online quizzes also show up in the exams.
He's a nice teacher. He gives these quizzes and they're not that hard. You take them at home and you can use your books/notes/whatever. Its pretty easy. He gives lectures in class based off the book he wrote. Just highlight as he goes along. Its pretty simple. The test so far have been okay. You just have to study for them and you'll do good.
He is easy as long as you are willing to put in work...
He's pretty easy....it' just you really can get a personal relationship wit him....ut other wise if u STUDY the test wont kill u
You have to do this dumb paper about you using a whole bunch of key terms and no one gets higher than a B. I heard his TAs grade them anyways. Blackboard quizes and random facts at the beginning of each class thats worth extra credit on exams
He is a tough teacher but if you read the book you will get an A. There is some busy work and a paper that you have to complete. The exams are mostly multiple choice and I didn't fine them difficult if you did the reading. I got an A.
If you want to LEARN sociology, take him. One of the few classes that I can actually explain what I learned and apply it to life. He might try to psych you out, but the class is relatively easy if you do your part. COME TO CLASS, READ THE BOOK, STUDY and do your online quizzes and you will do well. Sounds basic but it's how many ppl falter
He is a very intelligent and excellent professor
This class is not easy, but it's not hard. You don't have to come to class but it definitely helps. Just do the readings and always do the quizzes. All of the tests are taken straight from the quizzes. Just go to class most of the time and remember what he says, some of it is on the tests.
Ivor, ivor ivor...Well the class is not ridiculously hard but he is pretty boring. The online tests are not hard but require 100% so you may be taking the test multiple times in a row...His book(s) is mandatory (great way for him to make a profit). Also he's not to fond of people other than him talking in his class and will embarrass u
Umm, frankly, if one finds this difficult, it's because they haven't read the material or attended class. If the textbook is read consistently, exams will not be a problem at all. Take good notes, and attend the classes. He doesn't mind if you miss a couple every now and then. Good professor, in my opinion. FYI though - Stress section = boring!!
His class is really boring..I hate doing the Blackboard quizzes. There is no real connection between him and his students because its like 75+ in the class..You gotta study to do good in that class. I don't regret taking it though
Subject= very interesting. Professor= boring! Attendance does NOT count, even though he does pass around an attendance sheet. 10 blackboard quizzes, 3 exams, one paper, and the "stress exercises" (kindergarten level work... I did it in 20 min). Going to class will do nothing for you. Read the book and do the work. Its not hard to get an A or B!
If you read the book you can pass the class. Going to class will definitely help too because he does say a few things that aren't in the book and he does keep attendance and he gives extra credit facts in class too. Just read the book & you should pass though.
Boring as ever, stands in the front of the lecture hall and if you sit in the back its hard to hear him and read his extremely dry power points. if your talking in class he will call you out without a doubt. do the online quizzes, stress exercises, and the paper and you'll pass attendance only matters for the extra credit facts. tests are long/hard
This class is not as hard and difficult as everyone makes it seem. Most people end up with C's or B's in this class because they do not attend class regularly, don't read the book,or try to cram 5 chapters the night before an exam. I read the book reguarly and went over his powerpoints and got an A in the course. The tests aren't hard if you READ!
If you register for Livingston and end up with MARCIA E. JOHNSON... RUN!! WITHDRAW!! Get in a new class ASAP!
He's a pretty good professor, just show up to class regularly, review the PowerPoints and skim the book. The Blackboard quizzes are easy esp since they show u what answers u for wrong. Overall an easy A.
gains some revenue for his own book. plus howard pay... leads to a nice life.. but overall he is a nice guy but IT IS A MUST TO COME TO HIS CLASS on time&SIT IN THE FRONT.. HE HAS AN ACCENT!!! otherwise everything is on blackboard and if you come to class early he says the facts of the day for extra credit on quizzes & test but it doesnt help
Class wasnt difficult at all. If you read the book and read the powerpoints on blackboard you should be able to pass the tests. Blackboard quizzes are easy/open book and you can take them multiple times for a 100. I was able to get an A but i also put forth effort. Only downside is he is kinda boring and has an accent
TAKE HIM DURING THE SUMMER!I had to drop out during the year along with my 2 friends and we all came and took in the summer. He backed up all of our test and everyone helped each other with all the online quizzes(Help from people in the class during the year & people in the summer class that knew helped) Overall, take him in the summer .ALSO hes fine
It's not necessary to go to this class unless you want the fun facts for extra credit on the test. Everything is on Blackboard and in the book. I foundi it easier to read the book than look at the powerpoints for the quizzes/tests. He has a very thick accent and is extremely hard to understand. I guess he's an ok teacher.
HIS CLASS IS VERY BORING! YOU DON'T NEED TO PUT IN TOO MUCH EFFORT TO DO WELL IN THIS CLASS! IF YOU DO THE BLACKBOARD QUIZZES AND KEEP TRACK OF THE QUESTIONS THEN YOU WILL DO WELL ON THE TESTS! THE STRESS CHAPTERS ARE BORING AND DUMB! OVERALL THE SUBJECT IS INTERESTING BUT HE IS BORING BUT PROVIDES RESOURCES TO HELP YOU SUCCEED (OUTLINES/PPTS)
These ratings are very inaccurate. This class is easy, go to class sign your name on the roster & get the bonus facts. DONT BUY THE BOOK. He puts up the power points that accompany his lectures online as well as chapter outline. He is very straight & to the point. But if you study you'll do fine. I checked my blogs during class & got an A.
He's easy enough. Read the book and you'll get an A.
Dr. Livingston is definitely a hard professor, but he is a good professor. If you meet with him during his office hours, he truly tries to help out. His accent may be hard to understand, but it gets better once you go to more classes. Plus, he's a fine older man, so it's easy to pay attention
Take his class in the summer. He's very helpful, and its easier to get a A.
easy if you take time to do online quizzes. the attendence is used to give xtra crdt.
Easy class to pass if you read. His tests are based off the quizzes, so if you study the those you will pass the exams.
pRETTY EASY CLASS JUST DO THE READING AND TAKE THE ONLINE QUIZZES. ALSO ATTEND CLASS. HE CAN BE HARD TO UNDERSTAND SUMTIMES BT HE DOES REPEAT IF YOU ASK.
Great teacher, just come to class to get the daily facts for the test. And use the Blackboard test to study for the test. Pretty easy.
Very boring teacher. He has a thick accent, and is very hard to understand. I do not recommed him if you plan on doing well in sociology.
His class is structured blackboard, which is actually good. you need the book. going to class is pointless unless its before a quiz or test.he accent is thick and he gives facts for very little extra credit. you gotta read a lot . but its not a bad class
You don't need the textbook. The chapters are outlined on Blackboard and the Stress Exercises are there also. He's a pretty good teacher. I enjoyed the Facts he gave out at the beginning of class. His tests and quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class and/or do the reading.
I love Dr. Livingston! He is really helpful and I learned a lot in his class. I will def take him again if I get a chance.
This class is really easy if you read. It is not a lot of work just a lot of online quizes, and the exam is based off of the quizes. so you should do well if you do the quizes and and do good on the exam. The catch about the quizes is that you HAVE to get a 100% for him to count it
Class is easy. Do the blackboard quizzes & study those for the test. He gives extra credit on the test for the facts he gives at the beginning of each class period. The answers to the quizzes are online. Take this class if you want an A.
I had Prof. Livingston for intro to soc and he was very funny to me. He is not really a people person, though. But, the class is super easy. Make sure you buy the book and read it to do well on the test. You do not really have to go to class. And make sure to do all the blackboard quizzes and you will get an A.
I had Livingston for intro to sociology. I had a difficult time in his class. The course requires a lot of reading and his test are difficult. He offers extra credit, but the questions are only worth .5pts while the test questions are 2pts each. Not worth your time!
Attendance not mandatory!!! Study the book! Three main test are key! Study the book & previous quizzes. I got a B, studied every few days. A is possible but with very hard work. Go to class day before test! LOOK AT SYLLABUSS!!!!!!
Avoid at all costs. He teaches this class like its not intro but a PhD level course. Quizzes are easy bc answers are online but he really doesn't teach well. I wouldn't recommend him. Oh, and he doesn't pay attention to attendance.
Dr. Livingston is a witty professor. This class to me was easy. Attendance is not mandatory AT ALL, however you will need to get the facts for extra credit which he gives out every class period (you can get them from a friend though.) The tests/quizzes/final are ALL online. I didn't even need to open my book this semester. Its a pretty simple class
This class easy. You have a total of 10 online quizzes to do out of maybe 15 quizzes. Read the book. Even if you don't all the answers are online. He does take attendance although you don't technically have to show up to class. He gives facts at the beginning of class that are worth e.c on the test. Just make sure all to do all the work assigned.
For this class, if you do the blackboard quizzes you should be able to get an A. All of the answers are online and the same questions appear on the tests. There are facts given at the beginning of every class which are extra credit on the tests. Lecture isnt very useful to attend. You're probably better off reading the textbook.
His accent is so thick, I cannot understand anything he says.
If you are a Sociology Major taking him is crucial. He outlines EVERYTHING important about Sociology. He is easy you do your own outlines before class and actually work. If you're thinking about taking him for a divisional, don't.
Dr. Livingston is a pretty cool professor. Nice sense of humor, knowledgeable about his subject, but definitely does not give hand outs. Lectures are long and can get boring and his grading policy is complicated but he explains it in depth. You have multiple tries for quizzes and quiz questions are on the test. It's not hard if you show effort.
Look at your syllabus and see how grades are distributed. Class was easy and attending lecture was not necessary if you have a friend in the class to get the extra credit facts. Blackboard quiz questions can be found online, memorize all the questions on the Quizlets that come up for the exam. He's funny and helpful during lecture, so try to attend
I honestly feel that if you don't do well in this class, it's because YOU'RE not doing what you're supposed to do. I outlined each chapter, sat in the very front, and did all assignments. Because of this, I didn't have to do much studying when it came time for tests. I easily got an A.
Read your syllabus, attendance wasn't necessary but you do get many extra credit facts if you show up. The test use the same type of questions as the blackboard quizzes, and you can find quizlets with all the answers. I did not buy the book, but still aced the class from going to lecture and studying quizlet.
Dr. Livingston's lectures are long! No need to attend class. His tests are just like the online quizzes. Be sure to ask a friend for extra credit facts!
He's so rude, and doesn't explain anything in class. He gives a ton of BB quizzes. Don't take him!! Office hours aren't helpful either, he'll just refer you to the book.
Livingston is a good professor overall. Pay close attention to the syllabus. All class assignments are very straightforward. Lectures don't go into detail. Attendance is important because you sign in at the end of every class and he gives extra credit at the beginning. If you read the textbook and use the online guide, it will be an easy A.
Took into to sociology. He's a good professor, though he rambles a little. He really knows his stuff and gets deep into the concepts, so study your notes. Remember the daily facts, make chapter outlines, you can deff get a B. 3 big tests a semester, everything else is easy blackboard quizzes with unlimited attempts.
great teacher! Read the chapters, do the bbq quizzes, ask questions, and youll get an A.
Intro to Sociology was quite simple and clear. There are 3 exams (last exam weighs the most), BB quizzes, stress exercises, and a comprehensive exercise. LOTS OF READING! Print, read, and bring the chapters you need to class that day. Its straightforward to get an A, but it's not super easy. Just keep up and don't fall behind too much.
I would avoid taking him. The class is more challenging then it should be. Not many grades, with the focus being on the tests.
I took Dr. Livington over the summer and it was an easy A as long as you show up to class and read the textbook you will pass. He is pretty easy going and he will tell you everything you need to know in class. There are two tests (worth 75% of your grade) and BB quizzes (only takes the top 10 and gives unlimited attempts) Its the easiest class ever
Dr Liv is a great lecturer. He gives A LOT of bonus questions on his exam, which boosted my grade from a B to an A. You have to study or memorize a lot, but he gives you what to study and does a great exam review. Office hours help also. If you are good with terms and people's names, you should be fine. Coming to class will help also.
Class is super easy but he gives a lot of BB quizzes(16,but you only have to make a 100 on 10)which makes class more difficult than it should be, especially if this is only an elective/divisional class for you. Attendance isn't mandatory and going to class helps a little, but lectures are boring. All you have to do is read the book and take notes.
Honestly if you need an easy A, take this class. I finessed a B in this class and I only showed up to take his tests. He has blackboard quizzes but the answers for them are all online. The questions on his tests are from the Blackboard quizzes and because you see them often you just start to memorize them. He's super cool, easily accessible too!
He assigns quizzes every week that are only 5% of your grade and take up a lot of time. Class time is spent on many irrelevant stories and repeated tangents. I would recommend reading the textbook on your own time. Would take a smaller class. Most don't have exams, just papers.
he says attendance is mandatory but its not. can pass (probably with an A) if you dont go to class IF you read the text book and teach yourself the material. he often gives random facts that arent in the book because he knows people wont come to class and put them on the test. work with your classmates, have study groups, share notes, etc.
Livingston was one of the worst professors I've had during my time at Howard. The dude makes you memorize so many useless facts, like exact numbers of random stuff. and the majority of these facts are nowhere in the book. his tests are relatively difficult. He does not care about his students at all and doesn't care about their feedback. AVOID HIM!
A clear grading criteria and don't expect any curves b/c I have never heard of him giving one. There are 12 quizzes, you need to get 100% to get 0.5% for a possible 5% of your total grade. There are 2 exams and a final worth approximately 14%, 26%, 36%. He assigns a "Stress" portion in the book he wrote and is worth 8%.
Professor Livingstons exams are not a joke. They include little details that dont matter. He says random facts in class, that you have to remember for the final. Gives BBQ quizzes of 25 to 50 questions on Blackboard every week, they are all only worth 10 points: waste of time. Dont even think about extra credit, its a radical NO.
I love Professor Livingston! The best professor Ive had at Howard. I had him the Summer semester 2020 during the COVID Pandemic. I was working at a hospital and once I explained that to him he was so reasonable and Ive never had a teacher who cared so much. I got thrown out the class due to some nonsense and he got me back in. He is the best!
I took Livingston for Intro to Sociology and your grade is comprised of 16 quizzes that you have to get a 100% on and 3 exams. He is lecture heavy and he doesn't record lectures so you have to go to class in order to know about the questions that will be on the exams. The exams aren't difficult though; all multiple choice and fill in the blank.
If you are not a great test taker stay away from this class, your test are a huge part of your grade. Honestly if you are trying to learn in the online environment this is not the class for you. All he does is go over slides and he makes you buy his stress book in class. He is very knowledgeable, but not a great teacher for the online environment.
Dr. Livingston is a very knowledgeable professor, but the online setting was not his strong suit. There are a lot of tests and so many readings to complete. If you're not the best test taker, you should beware.
My overall the experience was poor and this class was a waste of time. You can easily get a good grade, but hes not a very helpful or accessible professor, and the class is very lecture and test heavy. He doesnt record lectures. I received nothing out of this course except stress. Also hell make you buy his lil stress book. Avoid him if you can!
i had him online this semester and this had to be one of my hardest classes this semester. Be careful on the fill in the blank questions, if you misspell an answer wrong or and an extra space or any small thing you will NOT get that answer right. pay attention to lectures because some of the answers on exams are from the lectures, not the book
This professor doesnt ever post lectures and at the end he doesnt round your grades. You can get an 89.7 which is a 90 in the class and he will still give you a B.
He doesn't post powerpoints online ans specific things he says in class will be on exams. Be sure to pay attention.
LISTEN, please do not take this man because he will irritate you. I took him in person and absolutely hated everything about the class. HE DOES NOT CARE and he does not hide it. His class is still the only B on my transcript. He is not worth it. Please avoid him at all costs. I loved Sociology but he made me lose all interest.
Hes just awful
His lectures were so fast and he didn't record them or post slides so you have to self-record or type as fast as you can. It was very easy to pass, grades are based only on quizzes, 2 sets of exercises (one during the stress section and one toward the end) and tests. Listen to what he says during lecture especially when he says it could be a test q
terrible. scribbled on the slides. doesnt post slides. makes you buy his stress book. literally avoid at all costs. online environment not for him.
The professor's lectures are definitely difficult if you aren't a fast writer or type. But the BBQ's with the quizlet's are the best way to begin learning and preparing well for the midterm and final exams. If you pay attention to your BBQ's (quizzes) you will succeed. Very fair when going over all of your tests and exams and will help you do bette
This professor was ok. He doesn't post his powerpoints or records his lectures. He also moves very fast. Pay attention in class because what he says isn't always on the slide but it's still in the tests. There are 2 tests, lots of quizzes, two long assignments that are a large chunk of your grade, and the final. Online teaching isn't for him.
Livingston is absolutely not sympathetic at all. He is not lenient at all during covid so I'm sure he's not in person. I do not recommend this class if you want peace. I finished with an 89% and he would not bump it at all. He does not give extra credit whatsoever. If you pass ALL of the tests you will pass the class with an A.
He is kind of rude about when you ask for extensions or anything of the sort because he plans everything before hand and feels as if he does not need to change it no matter what. He does say some questionable things in his lectures that can be taken out of context. Make sure to take notes or have resources available. Very lecture heavy class.
The online sociology class has over 100 people in it so there is little to none one on one time with the professor. I would suggest taking an in person class with a smaller amount of students to truly enjoy the course.
He would not round my 89.9 percent to an A. The class is easy to finesse but if sociology is your passion and you're truly trying to learn don't take him. He can't teach and is very inconsiderate.
This class is severely test/quiz heavy and he goes so fast in the lectures. He will go back on slides if you ask, but he sometimes misses your request. I would not reccommend taking his class if you can help it. You have to get 100/100 on every quiz, except for exams obviously and if you don't take notes you will not do well in this class
He gives many long quizzes that go in as a zero if you don't get 100, makes everything due at 11:55, and when I couldn't complete an assignment because I had a migraine for 2 days he didn't let me make it up, he forces you to buy textbooks that he wrote. And, my final grade was a whole letter grade lower than what it said my grade was in canvas.
This prof. DOESN'T provide you the slides AT ALL. Makes you purchase the textbook HE WROTE and wants you to get an 100 on every quiz in order for it to count. He is lecture heavy so make sure you pay attention.
Do not take
This professor can be quite frustrating. Quizzes and assignments are strict, with little flexibility. However, Unstuck ai proved helpful for studying and test prep. Attend every lecture and take diligent notes to succeed in this challenging yet manageable course.
