He's a muddling technophobic old codger.
Teaches the intro course like it's 3rd/4th year! Way to turn people off of Geog!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS

So much fun! Funny and interesting. Likes what he teaches!
Good lecturer, but what a temper.
Never detested a course so much in my life
GPA KILLER
Interesting material & lectures well. Exams: fair; Marking: brutal. DANGER!

Give Up
Awesome course, like a great adventure, very tough teacher but I kicked ass.

EEK!!!
Not bad, enjoys the subject, but hate the map quizzes
Dramatic, clear speaker. Outlines concepts well, provides critical perspective
Riveting lecturer. If you are in school to LEARN (not GPA), take this course!
Great Lectures, course was fun
Great lecturer, makes material interesting. Map quiz can make/break your grade.

I didn't know geography could be this interesting. Great voice too.
Amazing lecturer: enthusiastic, clear, and funny. Tough exams though.
excellent lecturer, very tough marker
funny little leprechan man! don't complain, people, map quiz fine if ya study!!
TOO HARD!! If you're looking for a easy class DO NOT take this one!!
Remember to bring at least 5 sheets of paper for each class, tought exam, funny
Pretty Good...Clear but a bit LOUD at times...wakes ya up in the mornin'.
The essay component pisses me off...
Take this course only if you want to LEARN... be warned, your grades will suffer
STAY AWAY!!!!
Excellent lecturer, exams are fair, map quiz is easy marks, tough marker
No Comments
Good lecturer (makes class interesting), but a VERY hard marker!
Made every lecture and enjoyed them.
I learned alot from his lectures but my marks didn't show it.
study every little term if you want to do well on the exams!!!
Midterm and finals very hard, beware. Be very good lecturer.
Has fierce accent and loud voice; okay marker; map quiz is easy
Good teacher but hard marker and grades will suffer.
Good lecturer but beware of tricky exams (tries to confuse students!)
hard marker, hard and tricky final
Very unhelpful and very, very mean...
best lecturer i've ever had
weird guy....very critical.....
Marks every exam 2-3+ times. Interesting man/prof; brutal marker. Good lecturer
Hard Marker, but funny as hell. Take very good notes
Very hard marker-know the def of ecumene
Vicious marker, mean-spirited and unhelpful comments, but decent lectures...
brutal exams, but the only lecturer who will keep you awake...guaranteed! take the easy marks he gives you (map quizzes).
Great accent, very entertaining lecturer, overall nice guy - brutal marker however, so be sure to ace the map quizzes.
funny guy, tough marker.

VERY MEAN MARKER AND COMPLETELY UNHELPFUL - TOO bad his lectures are so interesting
VERY TOUGH & TRICKY exam!!!!!pay EXTRA attention to the textbook & the extra material that he gave in the lecture
CONCISE LECTURER, HARD EXAMS...
I agree with what everyone else says, hard tests! Map quiz helps
Great teacher for a slightly tougher course, after experiencing many courses at sfu, he is one of the best profs I've had: Communicates material clearly and keeps his students interested in the subject matter.
Not anywhere near as hard as made out to be. Great lectures for those who care about such trivial matters as actually learning and thinking instead of the usual tripe that spews forth in great quantities in the arts departments of modern universities.
Any teacher who tries to make a fairly cut and dry subject like this interesting and well communicated gets a 5 on my rating for clarity.
makes the lecture fun. good teacher overall
Great prof. Really seemed to care about the students. Rather tough, but fair enough in the end (curves the course.) Do well on the map quiz and take note to the definitions in the text.
Notice the size of the questions marks beside each incorrect answer on exam: small question mark means you got part of it but not his answer, medium size means you're veering off the track, and large size means you're way off and it's garbage
One of the most insane teachers ever. Lectures are great but the testing is obscure!
Good prof. I never saw him outside of class before and he knew my name, asked me a question (i couldnt answer) during class, freaked the heck outta me. BUT INSANE EXAMS -thk God fer curving.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is boring, he teaches in an ol' English Crotch-up-the-ass conservative way. 3 hours of PURE hell. just rote memorizing. Also, the textbook he uses is extremely rightwing. all in all: eurocentric, boring, annoying
Nice guy but bad class. 3 hour lectures are pure hell! I do not recommend this course.
Well informed and knowledgable about the subject matter. Has absolutely no compassion for his students, will yell at students in front of an entire lecture hall just for eating a granola bar.
...nice guy....but can produce some hard tests!
Exams are way too hard and only test you on the insignificant details of the course.
I think its time for him to take a break from teaching this class!
Interesting subject, the lectures were sometimes boring but usually good. His exams were killer - he tests on insignificant details and not the main ideas. Really stupid assignments. Accent can be hard to understand.
Great lecturer. Tries hard to mae sure material is interesting, and incorporates good examples. Tests are kinda hard, though.
this guy sucks
This class wasn't too bad. He's a pretty nice guy and I didn't find the midterms too difficult. Be prepared to write a lot in these lectures (he doesn't use power point or anything...you have to take notes right from what he says) and do well onthemapquiz
Awsome lecturer! Free marks (map quizes), easy exams, easy marker. Great course for new 1st year students.
Eccentric and somewhat traditional. Not easy... and can pick on students. SOcial skills not great, and seems too preoccupied with Geographic perspective. One thing that's good is that he cares about students developing their mind.
Lectures are boring!!! His voice is messed up. Map Quiz requires alot of memorization! Term Paper is stupid. And tests are hard.
Fantastic lectures ruined by ridiculous exams! You learn tons of facinating facts and ideas only to have him test you on unimportant material Ie. the names of lectures; and things that were hidden in the footnotes of the text. Tries very hard to trick you
Good Lectures BUT completly irrelevent to tests. class average on exams were 47%. if you know everything from the lectures and text and i mean everything (even captions from pictures) you will do pretty good. Map quiz is easy, staright memo of 150 things
good lecturer, and knowledgble, but the final is tough, guys. the good news is the mid-term is pretty fair. and the mark on the paper is harsh.
too hard
Easily one of the most passionate and enthusiastic professors ever. Very knowledgeable and gets you interested. Remember, if you like Geography, he likes you. If you don't like geography, he will still remember your name.
who can understand what he "talking"about??? his speach is very unclear~>"<
I find him a very interesting lecturer....although at times I find him extremely long winded. If you can take excellent notes and keep up with the reading, and not skip any lectures/tutorials, you should do alright. Sit in the front, you pay more attentio
What an amazing speaker! He gave great notes and made the lectures interesting to listen to. I found him to be a great Prof!
very right wing pro-capitalism guy... :( manipulates history and keeps bashing communism without actually knowing what he is talking about... :(
Not very clear in his explanations, classes are boring
one crazy old guy
worst professor ever! teaching like an old freak player. not clear lecture. not organized. wonder how he becomes a professor at university
he's not an easy prof, and not always all that clear, but very enthusiastic about the subject and he always want to help you. i find very very liberal; total feminist.. and rather funny too. easy to get along with, if you dont like him, its probably you, not him.
A great lecturer, goes off on lots of tangents that have little to do with the course, but are more interesting. Everyone fails 100 'cause they don't pass the "map test", so study your atlas before you take it. His upper level courses are much more interesting and rewarding than 100.
His lectures are brutally boring and his tests are next to impossible. Make sure, if you take this class, that you study hard for the map quizzes because they really make a big difference in your mark. Overall, however, Ivor is a Geography fanatic who doesn't seem to understand why everyone is NOT
Brutality comes to mind when you recieved your marks for your exams. The sheer amount of marks taken off for the tiniest mistakes is unbelievable. Hard course, and you have to memeorize the entire planet, literally.
midterms and final are very difficult!!! map test was really easy, just make sure u know everything on the maps, plus he gives u 3 times to get perfect! on his tests he takes off fractions of a point if you didnt write a word in for your definitions...interesting lecturer, but marks are low!!!
oh my gog! if you don't have to take this class DON'T. He's very interesting, but if you don't have the textbook memorized...prepare to get a bad grade.
i got up at 830 three times a week to listen to this guy. totally worth it.. extremely hard exams but the class gets scaled like mad. do well on the first map quiz..hes cool..makes sure he knows everybodys name. friendly guy
The speed of his classes are hard to keep up, and the things he says aren't in your text, but on test. Also, he shows no mercy when it comes to marking. Be prepared to remember more than just the definitions in bold, remember it word for word, because there are no multiple-choice Qs on the exams.
midterms are quite hard (I suggest you study in advance). very picky in what goes into your essays on test(again, study in advance). well organized lectures and seminars are pretty interesting but that doesnt dismiss the fact that he's a difficult "professor".
midterms and finals are EXTREMELY hard. but you get to make up your mark in quizzes and essay. read the book and make sure u know it well
Likes to turn his lectures into plays... and with his expressions, it get you off focus. He knows his stuff, but he expects you to know as much as he does. Problem is ppl can only remember so much at a sitting, yet he makes you write some tough papers/exams. Made the course very challenging.
old school euro centric, and very simplistic
This course would be SOOO boring without Ivor. He is a painfully hard marker but his lectures make up for it. He is entertaining, funny and witty...don't let his loudness scare you...he actually cares about his students!!This is a very exciting class but is very fast paced keep up and you'll be fine
all i have to say is he is absolutely a HORRIBLE prof. he's loud and basically repeats things over and over and over until you want to kill yourself. Always keeps you after class making you late for other more important things.
ridiculously hard marker. i knew my stuff inside and out and got a bad mark.
Be well prepared for midterms/finals and map quiz
awsome lecturer!
Very interesting proff, the class would be boaring as hell without his excentricities. Give the class chances to re-take tests, marks on a curve, has a million handouts and things to be photocopied instead of a textbook, keeps you on your toes, would be boaring without him!
great prof but H-A-R-D exams
Ivor Winton is a crazy proffesor who is too in love with himself. He is more concerned about his villa in France than he is about his students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE.
Midterms and finals are extremely hard. Tough and unfair marker. Lectures run over time. Expects you to know every single detail, which is impossible, instead of focusing on the general information.
the worst class i have taken in SFU
Do not expect a normal learning expierence. Ivor expects memorization of the most non-relivant facts that may or may not be related to coursework,,Even if you excell in all other studies, WAY to much time spent if you want to do well in his class, only to be very frusterated on his tests! avoid.
Five star prof. One of my favorites so far. Vast knowledge, quite exciting lectures, and overall personality account to a memorable learning experience. Highly recommended!
Ivor knows his stuff inside and out. His lectures were the most interesting that I've ever had. Love the accent! You will never fall asleep in one of his lectures. His exams are tough, but if you study and keep your notes organized you will do fine. I would definately recommend this prof!
very interesting lectures! exams are not that hard if lectures are attended
Strangest guy i've ever met. Very approachable and is willing to help though. THe test where just insanely hard, however the way he scales the class can be very helpfull. The map quiz is awesome though haha If you can do well on the map quiz all is well. Oh and he will know your name within 3 weeks even if you don't realize.
the class wasnt that tough..at least he (the teacher)gives you few chances on a quiz and so..but his teaching style is very distint from others..which made manys students confuse..and therefore grade was deeply affected...In my personal opinion..only to be avoid..
to be honestly, i have "no comment" with this teacher..never recommend anyone to take his class unless you want to lower your GPA..
He is pretty hard without proper lecture notes, unless you want to major on Geography. Otherwise, don't take it. You must have very good marks on map quiz and the research project. If not, you must fail on his midterm and final.
you can't get a better professor - clear, entertaining, hard marker no doubt, but grades on a curve - probably the most fair Prof on the hill - the assignment optional..and an overall interesting class...doesn't get much better.
Ivor is a brutal teacher. He is a very hard marker and I would not recommend him as a prof to anyone. His marking requires specific answers, even when you answer the question correct he still only wants to see what he wants and will take marks off for it.
HAHA I love this guy! He's loud and hilarious - he'll refer to sex or wine somehow in almost every class. Oh and I think he looks like Billy Bob Thorton! His 8:30am classes will completely wake you up and give you a reason to get up in the morning!
I personally dont like this class. Not because of the class material, but because the teacher's marking is totally unfair. This is almost an "open secret" for many students who is taking/took his course. By the way the class average is often lower then other geog classes.
Hes very dramatic with his lectures, and the midterm had really specific detailed questions-really hard! But he was fun in lecture all the time, too many lengthy examples for things though, difficult to know exactly what he wants but still so much fun, though pretty hard.
thanks for making it interesting!! I love maps!!
The best prof I have ever had. He is amazing, it was a privilege to be in his class. He is very smart and you will learn a lot. His lectures are very dramatic and hilarious and intelligent. It's pure joy to hear his lectures. Sure, he's a hard marker but he's fair and he rewards excellent work. You just need to work hard in his class.
no text, exams are based on lectures he gives and on articles in reserve... pay close attention to pop stats... class average is usually around 40-50%, but will scale...
Worse teacher ever. Marks too hard and is full of himself. Avoid his Geo 100 as much as possible
This Guy's Map Quiz always boosts everyones marks up. I aced the map quiz, got a B on the paper, and barely passed both the midterm and the Final and I still got a final mark of a B. A perfect GPA booster. Has a really thick accent however.
I was NOT looking forward to taking GEOG 301 - geographic methods & ideology (how bad does that sound!). But Ivor's classes were AMAZING - it was like watching a movie or having a great story told to you. After finishing a bachelors and a master's, I still look back to his class as my favourite. Tough class - but i loved it so much i did well
Ivor is one of my favorite teachers at SFU, hands down. . .BUT!! This class WILL drag down your GPA if you don't devote your life to studying for his tests - He is THE hardest marker in the Geog department. However, he makes the course so interesting I would even consider auditing the class . . .
he changed the examable range two days before the final exam. and he is a extremly hard marker, and materials from his lectures are very confusing. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS EVER!!!
He's got the passion that many teches lack. Very hard marker.
Ivor is a pretty good lecturer. Exams were a little tough, some terms seem to come out of nowhere, but overall, his marking was fair. Ivor was also very flexible on the deadline of assignments. Also, texts used were interesting. I had a good time in Geog 300.
One of the most interesting courses I have taken, likely because of the effort and interest put in by Ivor, including articles published the same semester.Studying is a must but is a very fair marker.
He is the worst maker ever in sfu. Don't take his course. Dont expect any As or Bs.
took Human Geography with him and he really has a passion for this stuff. Lectures are not mandatory as all the information you need are in the book but his lectures are interesting and is a better way to absorb material than reading the long, long book. Very approachable.
He speed talk in lecture and you'd not be able to write down everything. IF you want to take this class, you need to work really hard. He is a hard and slow marker. I personally have cgpa ~3.00 and this class helped me lower it pretty well.
Like another commenter said before, going to his class is a pleasure. He makes geography interesting. He may be a hard marker but his lectures relate to current events and enjoyable. He also gives you a 4 chances in the geography quiz which is quite lenient.
An extremely interesting class. To comments below:Taking notes means writing down the main points, not every word that comes out of prof's mouth! Fair and reasonable marker, this has been a gpa booster for me. you will not be bored!
Delicious use of English, every class is filled with wonderful phrases and odd observations. Always entertaining, his depth of knowledge and passion for what he teaches is refreshing.
I have nth to say instead his mt is hard and mean is usually fail range! u decide whether u want to choose him
Too difficult of the map qiuz, he only give u half mark of map qiuz if your mark is below 15.. it's too hard!!
Map quiz, worth 20% is not fair at all. 15/20 = pass, anything else, will ruin your GPA this is a Gpa deflator course! I feel like dropping his course because of the unfair marking systems!! IVOR isn't concerned whether you pass or not! He says you gotta pass that 15/20 Map Quiz! It's unfair because most of us dont know WORLD GEO in an INTRO class!
Not fair. bad pro. hate map qiuz
one of the most theatrical teachers I have ever had, which makes the class very interesting and always entertaining!.. I learned more in this class then in the last 2 years at SFU. Marking is tough but fair, I highly recommend taking any classes he teaches.
Yes, his exams and map quizzes and even essay assignments are very difficult, but the class itself is very interesting. If you don't take this class seriously and take it for an easy mark or a fun class, then don't expect a good grade. You really need to put in a lot of effort to do well. He is very passionate about the subject. Great teacher.
Extremely hard marker. Does not give you chance in midterm markings. His Final Exam was extremely difficult. a little unfair final exam. I find the mapquiz is fair because students get 4 attempts to get 20%. the mandatory essay is fair. MT and Final are Difficult.
Best professor I've had at SFU by far. Challenging, informative, and incredibly knowledgeable, Ivor will push you to do the best you possibly can. I don't recommend his courses if you do not work hard for your grades or if you are uninterested at all in the subject. I recommend his courses if you want to learn from the best.
Ivor is awesome! One of the most engaging and entertaining lecturers at SFU. It's definitely not an easy class, but Ivor is so passionate and so good at presenting information it's so worth your time! Map quiz will boost your grade if you are good at memorization, will sink it if not. Midterm/Final asks a few questions about minute details.
Sadly, lectures are just for fun, except formulas and definitions. Tests on trivial and obscure details, most from the text and never discussed in class. Stickler for style details. Map quiz = gift points, if you study and learn your world locations. He's helpful, approachable, despite bragging how tough a marker he is. Just the exam was BS.
Harsh marker. Midterm was wack, but final was very fair. Must read and think about text to do well. Extremely helpful, even emails summaries of his lectures. Lectures seem to model good essay style.
Ivor is one of the best profs I have ever had! He is a super hard marker and his exams are little unfair but it makes you work hard and he is the kind of prof you strive to impress! If you are not interested in what he is teaching he will find a way to make it interesting to you!... Just dont expect an easy grade...
A hard marker, but has a genuine interest in the field.
O Uncle Ivor...He makes lectures fun with his john-cleese-esque personality. His exams were fairly hard but if you do well on the map quiz/essay, you'll come out with at least a B (even if you fail the exams!). Fun class, great prof.
Prof made topic interesting. But theres no power points at all! You have to listen to him to take notes. Often times, you miss out on keypoints. His midterm and final was unfair and very hard. Even the Essay was marked very hard!
Ivor is a great prof! really know is stuff. exams were a bit tough but not the end of the world. read the text book and study the notes! get through the map quiz and the essay and you'll be fine!
His lectures are pretty engaging and he's hilarious. His mid term average was not a passing grade and his map quiz is almost impossible. The class is scaled at the end but if you're going to take this class, start memorizing the world map RIGHT when you enroll cause it's not easy to memorize all countries, rivers, major cities, states, islands etc.
Toooooo hard!!!! Gpa killer
Ivor is a delight! He is one of the most expressive and passionate profs I know! You have to be really good in memorization for the map quiz and be very specific in your answers for the midterm/final definitions. At the beginning I felt it was hard to approach him but near the end I realized he is really approachable.Just be considerate of his time
hardest exams. must do well on the map quiz and the essay to stand a chance. uses curve so everybody fails and gets bumped up. makes the class fairly entertaining. overall dont do it.
All you have to do to do well in this class is: Attend ALL lectures; read what he assigns; DO NOT write notes on the textbook, that's a waste of time. Just write out all bolded definitions and memorize the definition and spelling; do well on the map quiz(print mutiple copies of each conitent and label all the places he tells you to and memorize).
This class is by no means a GPA booster. He's very interested in his work but he demands the same amount of commitment. Must go to seminars and participate because that's where most of the marks come. Written marks are generally poor.
Ivor is probably one of the hardest markers I have ever encountered during my University education. However, he was one of the best. If you want to get something out of school, take him! If you're not studious though, go take someone else, you won't survive.
Ivor is an old school professor. Don't expect to come to this class for an easy grade. Pay attention in lectures and you will do fine. He makes it pretty obvious what to revise for during his lectures. I don't know why people complain so much about the map quiz. You have FOUR attempts to get over 15. Very doable if you put the time in.
One of the best profs I have had. He demands a lot, and is a fairly tough marker, but is fair. You get what you put into the class. I highly recommend his courses.
I thought Ivor was funny and the lectures were pretty interesting for the most part. There isn't too much work in this course. Study hard for the map quiz and try to ace it the first time. Term paper wasn't too bad. He is a fair marker. Exams were fair as well. Overall, good prof.
He is very passionate about his classes and it shows in his lectures. He has very high standards, but he is fair with his marks. He also has map quizzes, which are pretty much free marks. He gives you the list of all the places he expects you to learn and we have 4 chances to take the quiz. One of the best profs ever.
Actually a great class, the lectures are very intriguing. Ivor is a funny guy in a quirky way. You need to attend the lectures, he does not use a powerpoint and the outlines he sends out are very limited. Do the readings, they're necessary. And most of all prepare for the map quiz, it is most definitely worth it
Ih, what can I say. The class I guess you can call it straight forward. He always reads his notes in a very quirky way. He does like to play with his vocal strings. map quiz is pretty easy if you are good with memorization. The term paper is pretty iffy, but nothing bad. His midterm/final tho is most likely going to destroy you. Not an easy B even
Wanna wake up in the morning? He is sensational and energetic. Simply the most fairest and straight-to-the-point prof I've ever had in 5 years at SFU. To enjoy the class, you better keep up with him. Those who complain are just crybaby slackers who couldn't keep up with his level of competence.
Hands down my favorite professor at SFU. What a character Ivor is ... eloquent, passionate, and entertaining! Ivor is old school -- be prepared to work hard and don't expect easy marks. If you are willing to learn then I urge you to take one of his classes.
hes a good teacher and he knows what hes teaching. the problem i had is if youre an engineering student or similar and are taking a set of other heavyloaded courses, this course is NOT gonna help which in that case wont be a GPA booster.
He only give his outline, never have lecture notes, class average is very low, and he never reply emails.
I've never had a prof that refuses to talk to students after class or during breaks, but then there's Ivor. He just absolutely refuses to accept emails, and honestly he's quite rude. An interesting, passionate, and funny lecturer, but his tests are unfair, and he never has slides. Bring laptop to take notes, and you BETTER read the textbook.
Don't let the comments for this class scare you off. It's most certainly not an "easy A," and his exams with destroy you if you don't study. However, Winton is very clear and interesting to listen to in Lecture. He finds email inefficient, but he is very helpful and kind if you attend his office hours and get to know him. Great prof. Great class.
I don't know what these people are talking about. If you read the textbook and pay attention in lecture, there's nothing he puts on the test that's unexpected. He's super enthusiastic, and an exciting lecturer. Don't expect this course to be an easy A+, but A+ is definitely attainable.
Winton is old school which means you have to work hard for your marks. No freebies. He did say in his lecture that no one will receive an A, which I found a little daunting, however, he is a very good lecturer and keeps the class engaged. You will learn from him but if your looking for an easy class, this is not it. Memorize your 600 page textbook!
Amazing lecturer and although he doesn't use slides, the way he present keeps you interested and listening throughout. Personally, I liked not having slides because I pay all my attention to listening and not copy-pasting slides as my notes. Don't miss class though because it is difficult to catch up and yes, he makes you work for a good grade.
Ivor is very passionate about geography. He however, is an old school professor and does not use powerpoints or display lecture notes. You need to keep on top of lecture as the material is key to passing. Extremely difficult tests that he is proud of and term paper criteria is vague at best.
Ivor Is by far my favourite prof I've had at SFU. His eccentricity and energy make every lecture enjoyable. He almost treats lecturing as an art form and therefore does not simply reiterate powerpoint slides as so many other profs do. Exams are difficult, partially because he likes to ask a few obscure questions that you didn't bother studying.
The textbook is quite expensive but pretty essential to passing! Take the map quiz seriously, it'll definitely help your grade. The lectures were quite interesting. This professor is very enthusiastic about the material, which is awesome! I would definitely recommend this class, but be prepared to work for your grade.
Absolutely no denying that IW is a highly knowledgable, passionate, and engaging professor. It is a tough class and understandably some may be frustrated that all class material not on exams, but ended up taking so much more away from course than simply completing credit - everlasting knowledge about the world's history. (Ps. I'm not a geo major).
