Don't buy a used book, the teacher uses an online component utilized that requires a code that comes with the book; $80 if you don't have it. This website is also used by community colleges, and the teacher uses none of her own materials. The website uses a grading method that she doesn't use. Her grading method is not clear. Open to students thoug
This teacher is useless - she wants the website to teach the class for her. The book goes out of its way to be obtuse about everything its trying to teach. There are other teachers using the same book - STAY AWAY
This was one of the hardest classes i've taken so far but with that said broder is one of the most helpful professors i've had. I felt like she really cared about my performance when I did really poorly on her first quiz and she e-mailed me to come to her office to go over the wrong answers.still, i worked my butt off and got an okay/poor grade.
I would never recommend anyone to use this class ever.. everything is based on an online application, which is extremely complicated, TA's check you work, some are cool, but lucky me i ended up with the worst one.
Never take this class!! it's dull and makes you hate Economics.. The professor thinks we are robots, by farthest this is the hardest class i ever took.
SERIOUSLY! DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS
Broder is the worst lecturer ever. applia assignments help boost grade but tests are not similar to study guides or book, she asks obscure questions. if you attend study sessions you can get points added to your final grade but i would never ever want her as a prof ever ever again. i cannot wait for the day i walk out for the very last time.
She is an uninteresting professor who tests you on things not covered in class. Attendance is graded based on answering "clicker" questions in class. Not very hard to fall asleep during one of her lectures. I would recommend finding a different economics professor if you have to take the class.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had. Dont ever take her period...
She's not as bad as people say. Aplia grades help boost your grade, but tests are difficult and clicker questions can be tricky if you doze off during class. She's not a horrible proffessor just not a good one.
She is pretty clear when she teaches. It's pretty impressive because we have a class of 300 people. Tests are hard, even if you studied. Aplia drives me crazy
SO DRY. And her lectures are basically the live version of the book. She is uninteresting and adds nothing to the class. The book is clearer than she is and teaches you the exact same thing. Seriously, read the book and you're fine in the class. In fact, I suggest you just skip it, as attendance added nothing to my learning experience.
Considering that the class was 300 kids, Prof Broder didnt do that bad. Her lectures are clear and she tries to make it interesting. Homework is tedious but easy, book is very clear and helpful (lots of examples). Overall she's very nice and helpful if you try.
Hands down the worst professor ever. Not only did I learn NOTHING the class was still painful to sit through. Don't think its easy just because there are 300 students, she gives ridiculous aplia assignments every week that don't help you learn anything for exams. I recommend you take any other class but hers unless your into torturing yourself.
Prof Broder's macro class was by far my hardest class of the semester. She completely taught the book but still required you to go to class for points. I studied everything in the book and lectures and knew it back and forward and still did bad on every test. I've taken 200 level econ and this class was by far harder. TA's were helpful though.
The driest professor I've had the displeasure of having. The material wasn't difficult but the class was somewhat difficult. Expect a lot of self study and a lot of reading straight out of the book in this class.
Large class, very boring. Hard exams .. basically these 3 things summarize her classes. By far it was my hardest class and worse in AU. even though i earned an A in my Econ 200 class which shows her quality !!
WORST professor in the history of AU. She word vomits the textbook, is completely unfair, and has no communication skills whatsoever. It also doesn't help that she has no sense of style; if it were not for the fact that the class itself isn't that hard, I would have failed. Intellectual and visiual eye-sore. Do NOT take her.
When you take this class, you'll want to have a cyanide pill on hand so that you won't have to suffer through it any more.
The concepts in Macroeconimics are not that hard, but expect to be shocked come test time. Her tests are tricky and challenging. I studied for them and understood the material and generally scored in the C range. She's pretty boring and is basically a walking version of the text. Do not take her.
Class is fine the professor is horrid
She is very nice but boring. Her tests are kinda challenging even though I studied hard for them. Attend the review sessions there are very helpful!! Over all, its not an easy A class but the material is interesting. She go through the chapters quickly! Take her if you can study hard. the best thing is that she uses Clickers
I thought Professor Broder was good overall. If you're not interested in Macro then I wouldn't really take this course. It's not her fault the class is boring it's just the material. Also, don't buy the textbook if you can because all of the readings are online.
she is not willing to help students, in fact she discourages them. I would never take another class with her.
She loves her honors classes but I'd watch out if you're in one of the big ones. She basically repeats the textbook a lot of the time and can be confusing if you ask for clarification. Don't buy the book! She's understanding if you are out sick, she even gave me an extension on an assignment without me asking once. the exams are difficult
Great Professor, really helped me pass the class. It is indeed a tough class, but with her help you will be fine. She tries her best to have students learn the material and is really on top of how students are doing and what is confusing for them. I would recommend to take her class and do your best in getting along with Prof. Broder. Really nice.
She is a horrible teacher and just reads from the textbook. Everything I learned was from the textbook and it was a waste going to class. She does graded HW assignments and extra credit extra help which boosts your grade because her tests are so hard.
Despite the large lecture hall, the dozens of students who couldn't care less about the subject, and the arduous aplia assignments, Broder genuinely tried to keep the class engaged and used practical applications. While she wasn't always captivating, it was still valuable to pay attention and read the text book ahead of time.
She is a terrible person.
She's a solid teacher. Her exams are tough but if you actually study for them and listen in class, you will do just fine. She's extremely helpful.
Lectures directly from book, which is great if you read ahead, because it's good review. You have to go to class, b/c she uses clickers to take attendance. Homework is almost always online. Always in a good mood. Tests are hard-ish, but easy if you memorize the formulas (not many) and graphs (quite a few). Go to class, do other homework.
personally, i like her classes but sometimes she is very boring and her exams are pretty tough.
She is very clear and a good teacher. Its your own fault if you don't do well.
Broder is a very solid professor and a very nice women. She is very understanding about absences and poor grades and provides many opportunities for extra credit. The lecture is essentially the same as the reading and if you do the reading before the lecture the material is reenforced and easy to understand.
I really got a lot out of this class and learned much from Broder. Although the class is hard, if you work hard and put effort in, you are likely to do well. If you go to her office hours she is REALLY helpful. I would take her class in a smaller setting rather than a lecture since Macro can be difficult.
She is a very boring and horrible teacher. I didn't learn as much of the subject material as I think I might of compared to other students' macro teachers. Her tests are very difficult and the lectures are super boring. I didn't enjoy taking her class at all. It is absolutely awful with this professor!
For a lecture of 250 people, I think Broder did a pretty good job. She offered opportunities to boost your grade like review sessions with TAs for extra credit. The tests were a bit rough, but if you studied enough not too bad. Knowledgeable professor, the size of the class was the worst part of it. Helpful professor if you take the time to ask.
While her style of teaching can be dull, she is a great professor. I learned a lot from her class, and she got me interested in econ. She was interested in getting to know her students as individuals. However, I had her for an honors section, and I know she prefers small classes to big lectures, so that may be where negative ratings came from.
Easiest class I ever took. The homework is super easy (make sure to do the aplia assignments with a buddy to get 100s) and GO TO TA meetings. She'll bump your grade up by 4% if you go to 8 hour-long sessions. Exams are tough, but if you go to a TA session you'll breeze by. She puts a lot more effort into teaching than most teachers! Loved the class
Big class and not clear at all + challenging exams! don't take her.
Compared to the AP classes I took in high school, this class is a breeze. Broder doesn't dive too far into the topics she teaches and, though economics isn't extremely fascinating, it's still do-able. So do the Aplia HW, study hard for the tests, and try to stay awake during class (yes, I even find myself nodding off sometimes).
She's really smart; she just can't teach. Unfortunate because I love economics. I find it interesting, but the class was so boring. Students were always sleeping through class. She spent most of the time talking awkwardly to herself or the computer. Doesn't bother to help students either, always refers to a TA. Don't take her.
She's a very intelligent woman, but she does not know how to teach. This class is especially hard in a lecture setting; you learn more from the TA's in review sessions than in class. The Aplia assignments are very tedious. All of the exams are incredibly hard with trick questions and strange concepts. If you're not interested in econ, stay away.
Broder actually was not that bad. She actually knew how to teach and was pretty good at explaining the concepts. If you actually studied and take your time to understand the material, then the class is decent. You can also get 4% extra credit with TA reviews. Interesting class!
Broder tries very hard to make sure you get a good grade. She gives you extra credit for going to TA meetings, usually drops one or two questions on the exams, drops your two lowest online assignments, and always gives extra credit on writing assignments. If you don't get a good grade, it's your own fault. She's not a very good lecturer, however.
Not a good professor. Very hard to learn in class and the tests are not based on what we are taught. Do not take this class if you want to pass.
Broder is super clear in what she expects and what she teaches. She always tells you what will be on the exam, so you just have to listen for it. She's actually really good at explaining things to people who don't like econ but the only problem is keeping yourself awake, because she does have a boring voice. Worth it though!!!
The most boring professor I've ever had. 95% of the class is on their phones and the remaining 5% is asleep (it's a noon class). Don't take. Easy class. I have straight 100s on the tests (though avg first test score was 80) and barely pay attention. Few tests, some online homework, and then clicker questions for attendance. 210 students in Ward 1.
AWFUL TEACHER. If you ever run into trouble with anything, you'll have to go somewhere else. Rude when students have questions or struggle. Also incredibly boring. Take any other Econ teacher. She seems nice enough at first but will QUICKLY change once you're beyond the point of any return!
Class was difficult. Doesn't care about students. Makes tests harder than needed to be. DONT TAKE HER.
Does a good job for the class size. Tests were hard compared to problems in class and in the textbook. APLIA (online homework) forced you to buy the book which was never used.
Broder wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't had such a quiet, monotone voice. It was a struggle to stay awake in lecture. The course material is easy and the tests were multiple choice, so if you've any aptitude in econ you'll be fine. But it will be despite Broder, not because of her.
Broder is well-knowledgable about the material; however, her 250-student lectures are long and boring. The questions on her tests can be unpredictable as well. However, her TAs hold multiple review sessions each week and each attendance at these review sessions counts as .5 points extra credit.
She actually is the worst. horrible lecturer for macro and her online program didnt even coincide with class instruction you could skip the lectures, because you dont learn anything, but she makes you use a clicker
People always complained about professor Broder but it wasn't her that was the problem, it was that they would skip class knowing that attendance is a big part of their grade and then they wouldn't do well on everything else. If you actually show up it's one of the easiest classes you'll ever take.
Oh my... Not a great class and not a great professor. Very boring
An incredibly easy class, taken apparently, by mostly stupid people.
I attended every class, went to the review sessions, and still didn't do great. SHE IS AWFUL AT MAKING TESTS! They are much harder than anything she teaches in class, and she doesn't let you use a calculator on exams that have math thats not easy. NOT A GOOD TEACHER
This woman should NOT be teaching to underclassmen college students. She is extremely boring, and the material she uses for examples in class hails in comparison to the substance on tests as far as difficulty goes. She should in no way be teaching an intro class of any level, as she is likely to make you hate and be confused by it.
I just took a test in her class on macroeconomics. The numbers and calculations I did were that of a stats or algebra class, yet it is an economics class and she did not even allow calculators on the exam. I believe that the tests and in class curriculum should be equal in substance and difficultness, however her tests are far harder.
I wouldn't recommend Broder's class because it's boring , tedious and after all the hard work and the 10-15 hrs spent studying for her exam I got a (B) in Exam #1 last week. Note: " Most students complained that Econ isn't hard but Broder is just trying to make it complicated and hard to exceed in. "
Definitely one of the easiest course I've ever taken. I didn't have an opportunity to study for the exam and I still got a high B, definitely an easy exam and an easy class. Strange that she plays Big Bang Theory clips... And she has a condescending smile, too...
Her macro class is fine. It is easy and as long as you pay attention in lecture or just get econ you'll be fine.
Broder's a baller. If you go to class and actually pay attention it will be one of the easiest classes you ever take. Tests straight forward right from the hand outs and she offers up to 3 points on your final grade of extra credit. 3 tests, 25% each and the homework is the remaining 25%, no essays. Not the most exciting class, but super easy.
I wouldn't take Professor Broder again for the simple fact that she doesn't understand that the class she gives is a lecture hall of 256 people. It's really hard to keep track of her class and I don't really understand where she got the information for her tests from. DO NOT TAKE IT.
Class is very boring but material is pretty straight forward.
To say the very least, Broder has dry and boring lectures. I couldn't pay attention to anything she said no matter how hard I tried. However, tests are fairly easy, and the TAs for the course were helpful. Overall, this class required more work on the student's part; in the end I was the one teaching myself the material for the final exam.
Lectures can be a little boring but you can get an easy A as long as you do assignments online
Ivy Broder class was nearly impossible. I knew I wasn't going to pass from the very first day. DO NOT TAKE HER. She's very boring, office hours are not useful because she tutors the same way she lectures. Very Discouraging. Basically told me I had no hope in continuing in Economics. If you see her, or her classroom, run in the other direction.
Broder is not the most exciting professor you'll ever have, that being said, her class is fairly easy and she basically spoon feeds you all the info. She even puts her powerpoints online so showing up to class isn't mandatory. One thing I would stress though is that actually answer all the clicker questions and do the extra credit -- it adds up!
Class participation matters for 3% of your grade- just go so you can get every point possible. GO TO TA SESSIONS. Broder is very nice, knowledgeable and helpful in office hours but lecture is dry and hard to pay attention in. I feel like she is a better teacher for small classes!
She does a great job of explaining difficult topics that could easily be confusing. If you don't go to class read the textbook, or vise versa. The practice problems she gives you for the exam are exactly like the real exam so if you do well on it, you'll do fine on the exam. She also gives extra credit points if you go to breakout sessions.
The lectures got a little boring
Professor Broder gave some of the most boring lectures ever. What was worse was that if you had a question, she would tell you that you should already know the answer. The Tests were much harder than the study guides and unless you took Econ in high school you were screwed. Lots of people failed. Doing the homework was the only reason I passed.
You have to be extremely interested in the subject material itself to not be put off by her teaching style. I never really understood or was interested in economics until I took another class after hers.
Lecture classes are boring by default. Literally just study and be able to define things and you'll be fine. I had to cram for the exam because I just didn't pay attention but since I did the exam til I aced it, I aced the real one. I highly suggest being tutored by a friend who took macro because she makes it out to be harder than it actually is
Absolutely amazing. Sweet, smart and very good at explaining difficult concepts.
I didn't think I'd like econ but Broder made it simply and easy to understand.
Definitely take her. She is experienced and very knowledgable and explains everything so thoroughly.
Great professor!! Take notes and go to review sessions and you'll get an A
Boring and hard. Nuff said.
Professor Broder was very sweet, and will remind you of an intelligent, witty grandmother. Broder gave great lectures, and is passionate about her job. However, to love Professor Broder, you must love Economics. I think her low rating is a reflection more of students' dislike of the topic, rather than the teacher.
The tests are a large portion of your grade. The lectures are long and boring.
Terrible lectures, nothing you can't get out of the book. Very boring. Tough exams
A very good professor. Three tests throughout semester, but no surprises on them. All material on the test is learned in class. Class can be a bit boring at times but you will still learn. Don't buy the textbook, it comes with the aplia program and the book is really only used for reading. Extra credit if you show up to review sessions.
Do not take professor Broder if You are taking Macro first time. She over complicates the subject. The lectures are boring and you will not get a sufficient answer if you don't understand something. Her office hours are not helpful. She does not care if you fail and will tell you its a personal problem even if you have put in your best effort.
Lectures are long and not interesting, yet mandatory. Tests are the entirety of your grade, but the option for extra credit can help.
She is good at explaining this however she is cocky. She thinks that having 40 years worth of teaching experience automatically makes you a good teacher. The entire course depends on tests. If you fail a test then you have no hope of recovering. I did not do well on the midterm and immediately after that she told me to drop the class. Does not care
Worst professor I've had at AU. Lectures are incredibly boring and everything seemed to be made more complicated. The tests are hard and she is not helpful when you ask for help. She has no problem failing her students.
Meh. You really have to pay attention in the lecture to understand what's going on or you're just going to be lost. Go to the review sessions. The TAs were more helpful and don't even buy the textbook. She's alright but because of the large lecture halls she's not really that accessible or helpful.
Not the best at giving lectures, very hard to follow. Poor coverage of material needed on assessments and homework. Extremely boring, more than bearable. Hw is assigned on weekends & short notice.
