I took her class (Human Sexuality) in Fall '02. Ivy is v. nice, approachable. Attendance is not mandatory, but she will pretty much tell you the answers to the test Q's. She did not teach 330 SP'03.
I took her sex and relationships class, she is pretty clear makes class interesting with her jokes. Tests are very basic and consist of class notes and some reading

Great teacher, really interesting and test and papers are really clear and easy. Test are all based on lecture and a little bit of reading, excellent class
Ivy is one of the BEST professors I have had at SFSU. Her lectures are clear and to the point. The notes are all done on PowerPoint and the papers were pretty simple. She is very approachable and made going to class in the summer bearable.
She is an awesome teacher. She made the class fun and interesting. I learned alot. Essays and tests are easy and covers what she lectures on.
She was awesome. Even when I had a grade change problem, she was very easy to work with. Makes the subject fun, great lecturer. Overall, an awesome teacher & person.
Her lectures are very clear and she gives answers to test questions. The syllabus is very straight forward and you'll know exactly what she expects from you for assignments, readings, etc.
I really liked her class. It was very interesting and easy to understand.
She is AWSOME!! Her lecture is so interesting (and her jokes quite funny) you can't wait to go to class even though it starts at 8:10 in the morning. I guess this was the most useful/informative class I've ever taken in my whole life. And one of the easiest class as well.

This was the best class. Ivy is so cool and really gets students interested with funny jokes and slides. Take this class, it is worth every second.
BEST TEACHER EVER! Helpful info for real life and she made lectures interesting with jokes and personal examples (the good kind). I definetly plan on taking more of her classes!
She's very nice and her lectures are clear, however, grading is a bit rough and I wanted to make sure that people know that. Everyone tends to overlook this, since she's so good-looking. Be careful on the papers, her TA's sometimes make mistakes and you get points docked for very simple things. Other than that, this class is a relief fromother ones
This class is so unbeievably stupid. The teacher is better suited to teach 5th graders. She talks down to you and presents the information in a very heteromormative way. This class entails lots of stupid lectures and the worst busy work imaginable. She didnt teach me anything!
This class is extremely easy and can also give fun insight into relationships. The professor is pleasant and approachable, but the cirriculum isn't too challenging.
Why students think this class is so darn wonderful is beyond me. Ivy is smart but she is also very repetitive, she didn't teach me anything that I didn't already know. The course is too over-rated and isn't all that it's cracked up to be. She has good jokes sometimes but not good enough to wake up at 8am. These sex classes are utter bull ****!!
This class isn't as fun as BIO 330. It's definitely overrated, and Ivy isn't all that helpful. Her reason is that she has so many students and is so busy that she can't reply to everyone's email, blah blah blah. She doesn't care about you individually. No big deal, but in case you have a problem with grading, don't count on her to be of much help.
Her tests were easy. Lectures were easy. Just copy down the notes and study them. Make sure you come to class everyday or you will miss out on some jokes and some important answers to tests that she gives out in class!
I took this class over the summer. I got a C+, only because I did not study for her test. All test are based on common sense and lectures. U can find books for this class very easy. ( lots of former students have taken this class and maybe can get u insight). Yet overall class was fun, I learned lots new things & I am taking H-ED 320
Best Teacher I have had a State. She is funny, has great pictures and is really nice. Her lectures keep you up at 8am and keeps you entertained. Her class isn't hard if you go to the lectures, she gives you answers for the tests and tells you exactly what to write down. Take Her Class, it is well worth it!
I LOVED IT! Great class, she's funny, young, her lectures are great, assignments are even fun and the tests are purely lecture based, just memorize all of ur notes and besides it's all common sense anyway!!! Def take it!
I had her class at 8am and she was great! Her lectures were not boring! She has a great sense of humor, makes me laugh everytime! This class is easy to pass. Her test are based on lectures, so just study your notes and you'll get an A, no doubt.
Totally knew what she was doing. 8am class, but didn't regret it at all. Funny, smart, and sometimes told stories about her to help us understand the material. The req books are helpful but the most important things are her lectures. Can't afford to miss more than a couple of classes. Agree w/ poster underneath.
The hardest thing about this class is getting up in time to be there at 8am! Otherwise, lectures are fun, interesting and organized. Ivy is funny and always energetic. Her papers for this class are also actually fun to write. Easy enough class if you can make it out of bed in order to get there so early and take good notes.
A super easy A. I hardly went to class and still got an A. They grade easy on the two 5-page papers assigned. Sort of treats students like children because she teaches sex ed to kids as another job. She's funny and makes a lot of silly jokes, so it's not always bad going to class at 8 AM.
Ivy is the coolest teacher. She is clear and points out what you need to know for tests. 3 essays. Little reading. Tests are super easy. The easiness of this class is not why I like it though - Ivy makes the material understandable and interesting. She is very funny - the best cure for morning sleepiness. I highly recommend her classes.
easygoing person, lots of jokes - some were actually pretty funny. my attendance was rather poor and i still got an a.
Great teacher. Highly recommended. She makes going to class fun. The essays were okay, her ta's grade them. The exams aren't too bad, she basically tells you what will be on them. The final was a little tricky though, but she curved it at the end.
She's great and a very cool mellow person. Although she teaches huge classes, she very personable and welcoming.
Very interesting and fun class! Ivy rocks as a teacher, but her graders are way too harsh. Assignments = one 2-page article critique, two 4-page papers, a workbook, a student health center workshop (you just have to show up to one), a midterm, and a final. She'll keep you awake and laughing at 8am!
Wonderful teacher!!! Funny, smart, interesting and knows the topic. Pretty easy as long as you do the work.
This is the easiest class I have ever taken; kindergarten might have been more difficult. If you want an easy "A", then take this course. Just make sure you show up for class and take thorough notes.
The best teacher i ever had! She was funny!!!! They need more teachers like her! Easy A!!!!
Keeps the class funny and interesting.
She's the best! took her class during summer. Def. easy A. Almost all test ques. are from lecture notes. Class reader that's "required" is fun to read but don't need it for class...wish I didn't waste $25 tho. Papers are easy b/c everyone can relate to topics. She's funny, young, laid back, and very approachable.
She was one of the most entertaining, informative, fun teachers I've ever taken!
Ms. Chen is uncomfortable talking about sex. Which is only bad because she teacher Human Sexuality classes. There is also almost no discussion in this class. Unless you are in high school, avoid her.
Great enthusiastic teacher.... The only horrible thing is that it's at 8 am and it gets tough to make it to class every time.... Attendnace is mandatory... but shes great
Great teacher! Very interesting and makes the class entertaining. Even tho it is early in the morning, it is worth it. Rarely went to class and passed with a B. I recommend everyone to take her.
I THINK SHES HOT! YOUNG AND HIP! HA. PROF. CHEN KNOWS HER STUFF AND SHE SEEMS TO BE VERY COMFORTABLE ABOUT THE SUBJECT. NOT EVERY TEACHER CAN GET UP THAT EARLY AND TALK ABOUT **** AND **** THE WAY SHE DOES. VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE! JUST MAKE SURE YOU SHOW UP TO CLASS TO TAKE NOTES. I SUGGEST BRINGING A LAPTOP INSTEAD OF PEN AND PAPER.
really well-spoken, knowledegable professor
Very Helpful and clear. A couple of short papers, MT, FINAL. Attendance is a must. Take notes in class, comes in handy! I would recommend her to anyone.
Class is comedy! She is always cracking jokes which makes it fun. Class was not as in depth as I thought it was going to be which made it easy. Would definetely take her class again.
She's hot. Both personality and teaching skills. Worth waking up at 8 am. Go to class everyday because lectures make up most of the tests. But you WOULD want to go because the class is fun, new, relatable, interesting. Go master chen!
Ivy is a great teacher. She really knows her stuff. If you go to all her lectures and pay attention you will get an A. She actually tells you questions which will be on the test. Show up, do the work and you'll be just fine. She's great. I will take any class she teaches.
she was very energetic at 8am. this class could not get easier. she tells you exactly what is on the exam and her lecture notes are extremely easy to follow. the only problem i found with this class is getting up early enough to make it. attendance is part of your grade and although she asks quiz questions during class, they aren't graded.
Great teacher! Easy to get an A if you atend class and do the readings. 2 midterms, half of the questions are already given to u during lectures. 3 short papers all super easy and u have to attend an hour workshop. Really fun class. She makes you laugh quite often and class is mandatory even though she takes attendance. Overall a recommended class.
This class was definetly easy, and she was very energetic and funny. However, I learned absolutely nothing new in this class, and her class is about 95% heterocentric. This class also relies heavily on gender stereotypes and approaches love, sex and attraction as an exact science.
This class was really fun. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that the class was so big (500 students!) But that is of no fault to the teacher. She is very interested in the subject and her lectures are very informative. As long as you do all of the work, you should have no trouble passing.
This is my 2nd class w/ chen.Easy class. I barely attend class and still got an A. Just make sure you have a friend who can lend you their notes. As long as you do all the assignments. 2 test, 3 easy papers, workshop. Attendance is taken but NOT mandatory, it's helpful if you are borderline grade. The class reader was useless. Great, funny teacher!
Very easy class. Just go to class take good notes, and study them. Dont buy the book its a waste of money. The only complaint I have about this class are that the TAs suck. They act like freaken grammar police and mark you off points for things and words that they think are wrong.
ivy chen is a great teacher. i am taking her for summer and her class is a lot smaller so she can get to know you better. she is very funny. she makes me enjoy class. time passes by pretty fast! her essays n tests are very straigh forward. she's a great teacher! she is also very far. her ta's grade the papers which i think there not too fair on...
I really enjoyed this class!! Ivy is a great teacher and really knows about this subject...Attendence is taking so make sure that you go to class. Recommend this class and was very easy. As long as you go then you will pass the class with a good grade.
great teacher, very funny. her tests are really straight forward. :D
She's a really good teacher. everyone should take her HMSX 320 class.
Always a joy to listen to her lecture because she is hilarious and it's also very informative. Her syllabus was extremely clear and concise. The website made it easy to check your grade on ever assignment. I actually enjoyed writing the papers because they were on topics that everyone can relate to. She is amazing.
I LOVED HER. THE CLASS IS VERY INTERESTING...&WORTH WAKING UP TO AT 8AM. IF U WANT AN EASY A AND A KICK ASS TEACHER, DEFINITELY TAKE IVY'S CLASS. <3
Awesome teacher!! The most stress free class you'll ever be in. Test were not that hard and covers the majority of the class notes. She literally tells you what you need to know for the test. 3 term papers which were pretty simple. If you just come to class and take great notes your practically guaranteed an A. Highly recommend this teacher!
First off, shes very easy on the eyes. Anyway, the class is easy. She tells you wants she wants you to know so take all the notes you can. You dont need to come but if you do its a fun class and the material will stick better in your mind when the tests come around. Midterm, final and 2 papers. Careful though he GA's grade at college level on essay
She's fantastic, very funny and makes this topic interesting, even moreso
Great professor! She really knows her subject and the class was interesting; however, it was 8 in the morning. Class was even more worth attending because she is HOT!
Very easy course. Just attend each class and you will get an 'A' for sure. Her lectures are very scripted. She does the same routine every semester (i.e. Master Chen. She's funny and likable when she's teaching, but one on one she is more distant and not as friendly.
Class is based mostly off text. Lectures are interesting but not much help. Finals and midterms were challenging but other assignments were easy. Nice teacher but not very accessible. Easy class if you are willing to attend each day and read the text.
Ivy was late almost every day. Lectures were upbeat but the material was sketchy. She doesn't cite sources and some of the articles were from pop-journals like Cosmo. I don't really want to pay $600 to read Cosmo! She sometimes brought things up in class that she was obviously ignorant about so don't take everything she says as law. She tries t
Ivy Chen is an Awesome teacher and totally makes the class entertaining. She also Teaches Hed 320 which is another good class....I would recommend taking HED 320 and HMSX 320 at the same time...you learn alot of the same stuff....Totally worth your time...great chpice for segemtn 3
Rolled in late EVERY DAY-sometimes 20 minutes. Majority of what came out of her mouth, I rolled my eyes. Based completely on assuming everyone in the class is heterosexual. Videos from the 60's. Like the videos, her teaching style is outdated! Come on Ivy..."lets move into the 20th century"
Ivy is the total package when it comes to teaching. She is vey entertaining and turns a dry topic into one that is very interesting. I attended every class session, and it's definitely a plus that she is totally HOT and SEXY!

not easy at all. a few essays and attendance cannot help you.
I took all the classes i can with ivy, she's a great teacher. Real easy and you can pass with flying colors. The T.A's grade all your papers so grading is fairly easy, and the test is lecture notes. so take good notes and if you have a friend who's taken the class then just take their notes and study from theirs and you won't even have to go to cla
Good class to take at 8 in the morning. Do all the work and you'll get an A.
I took both her classes and theyreSuper easy. Go to class, take the notes. She tells u word for word what will be on exam. Dont buy the reader--share with a friend..u will only need it for the papers, which are easy. I never opened the books, only went to class and got a 100% on the midterm. It's also interesting, the best class ive ever had at 8am
Great teacher amazing class, even though its at 8am its really interesting. 2 papers that the T.A's grade really easy. Midterm and final are notes from class.
SHE WAS WONDERFUL TEACHER. THE EASIEST TEACHER EVER...GOING TO CLASS WILL HELP YOU ALOT ON THE FINAL AND THE MIDTERM......THE PAPERS ARE EASY TO WRITE AND IF YOU WERE NOT HAPPY WITH THE GRADE SHE REREAD THE ESSAY TO GIVE YOU BETTER GRADE.....TAKE THIS CLASS
EASY class. I barely tried and ended up with a B. I'm sure if you put forth just a little effort, you can easily get an A in the class. Two easy papers, midterm and final (where she practically GIVES you the questions in class).
Ivy was sooo FUN! she's really funny, especially at 8 in the morning. Attend class if you want to know the test questions.. she bumps up grades in the end if you have really good attendance!! Take this class.
i took her sex and relationship class and contemporary sex class....easy B+ to A class because she makes it so interesting she is funny, nice, and very helpful, if you come to every class thats better because she tells you what questions will be on the test and papers are fairly easy :] take her! you wont regret it :D
she's great.
she's so awesome, funny, interesting, and gives your the answers to the test in lecture. aka clicker questions. easy A if you can follow directions.
Chen is an amazing teacher, she had me @ our 1st class. She made a joke about herself & was like "Some people call me Dr. Chen but I don't have a PhD I have my Master's. You guys can call me Master Chen" *head bow* Her class was an easy A. She tells you what exactly is going to be on the midterm & final. She specifically says "write this part down"
She is fabulous instructor, who maked the class very interesting and fun.
great teacher definitly worth taking this class. keeps your attention. she's funny and smart
Such a fun class and she is an awesome teacher! Very fun material and has interesting/funny additions. Questions she gives in class for participation are used on the tests and the notes are so clear and are extremely useful for the tests. Study the notes and you are set! A couple really easy, fun papers and you got yourself an A!
If only some teachers could be straightforward and helpful, then most of the problems in this world would be resolved. First of all, I am not here to convince people or force people to take Ivy Chen's class but the truth is, if you are looking for fun, a friendly environment, and want to enjoy what you are learning while you are sure of getting an
Fabulous teacher with the right attitude to life. She enjoys what she does for a living and that's the kind of person you want to associate with. If you are looking for fun and a friendly environment to learn, while you go home with an A, this is definitely the class for you. Love you Ms Chen!
A very upbeat teacher with jokes throughout the lecture. Easy to understand and easy to remember; useful info too. A worthwhile 8am class to attend. 3 papers with clear writing guidelines provided. Exam tips given throughout the semester so attending lectures is advisable. Easy to talk to and understanding, although usually swarmed with students.
great teacher. do the work go to class and read and your good. Engages the class in the topics becasue their intresting but she is able to put her own unique spin on it that makes you remember what she says
Ivy is an amazing teacher. She's fun and gives great examples during lectures. Best 8am class ever. 3 papers and 2 exams. Clear guidelines are given for all assignments. Follow them and you'll get As. Do the workbook and health workshop, they are easy points.
Ivy is a brilliant professor who knows her material and is able to keep students engaged! The tests were difficult, but the papers were fun to write. Do the work, study hard for the exams, and you'll get a good grade
I took Sex and Relationships and Human Sexuality with her. She is the reason I selected hmsx as my seg III. Very interesting lectures which cover reading material. She is funny too! Only drag is early start time but if you can get yourself there, it's worth it. Papers and midterm/final are easy if you do the reading. Wish she taught other classes!
IVY =Awesome! Very interesting class, very clear presentation of material. Clear instructions for assignment. Great sense of humor yes! Attend & do all assignments as instructed & on time, U should have no problem getting an "A" Highly recommended class for those out there dating, married & everyone else for real!U will be a better person for it.
I took her SEX ed class. It is pretty basic, she follows the book and tells you what Qs will be on the test. Write them down and you are golden. Papers are basic, follow her guidelines and you get 95% percent. She does try to keep it fun, plus she is not taxing on the eyes...thats a big plus.
After the 1st class she seems nice. but the amount of $ i'm spending in this class is ridiculous! doesn't she know about the crisis? that we are all hurting?! There is the book with workbook (which cannot be bought used, $60) the clicker ($24) and the account activation ($12.5) the reader ($25) and the big book ($122+)... BS!!!
I'm enrolled in 2 of her classes this semester. She's seems nice and interesting. My only complaint is that she is extorting her students. Her required books are so expensive and the workbooks make it impossible to get used books. She's the author of the books so she's making a lot of money off of this too. I don't want to be extorted by my teacher
sex/relationships. OMG you guys. be prepared to pay too much for a class you dont need. this class is low on facts and high on chen giggling at her own "jokes". this is her cash cow, nothing else. i learned more on wikipedia. unless yo consider nonscientfic surveys from womens mags academic. also youre not a comedian, yo can use a lav mic.
took her class in fall 09. over 700 students in class but its a really good class. However i would suggest ppl to take an easier cluster for seg 3. Human sexuality cluster is hard. therefore the materials in this class and variations class are EXTREMELY hard. teacher said 30% of the class failed. cus questions are tricky and hard. take american si
Great class, especially for an 8am in the morning one! I would usually come to class feeling tired and ready to sleep but then I become more focused and up beat as soon as class starts. Although she may be easy, you still have to study hard for the exams since some of them are kinda tricky. But overall they arent too difficult. I recommend her!
This class was cool. glad to have Ivy as an 8 am class
Ivy Chen is great! She's very clear and up front with everything you will need to do in the class.
she is pretty easy, all you need to do is just go to class and do all the papers properly, easy A~~most of her midterm comes from the notes she offer in class, attendance is not mandatory , but is better for you to get an A
Loved this class. I hated that it was at 8 am, but Ivy made it enjoyable. She's really funny. 3 short, easy papers, 2 exams, and a few other small assignments. Definately worth taking, especially if you're in a relationship or just recently got out of one.
Great class! But far as attendence goes, although you need to come to class for the notes, whats the point of maintaining excellent attendance if she's ONLY going to boost your grade if you're 1% away from a certain letter grade. Her class is fun but if you cant make it, get the notes from someone else cuz excellent attendence is nearly pointless.
This is the best class and teacher in the world. Thumbs up for Ivy she is spontaneous and soo helpful with feedback shes a professor most people only dream about having Great 8 am class totally worth waking up for that early :)
Ivy's class is a class everyone should try and take! She is funny and well versed on the subject. Everything is clear a midterm a final and a couple of pretty simple papers. I loved her class, she really loves her job.
ive taken both her classes, both are pretty much the same as far as content, but the 2 are both the easiest classes around, if you go to class on a regular basis, you'll be fine, cuz she gives questions on the exams during her lectures. seriously the only thing hard is waking up for it in the morning, thats it
She is super nice, but you do need to study and come to the class. At the end the attendance can pay off if your grade is a borderline, she says she doesn't curve but she does if your attendance is around 100%.
She's nice, but the amount of books is ridiculous, specially bc you end up not using them. the clicker is annoying. Other than that, it's an easy class: 2 multiple choice exams for which she gives the questions and answers during class. MANDATORY attendance (you need to go all semester long to get the questions). Fun & interesting
Great material, Great instruction. This was an easy A, she is super busy and has a lot of students so the class is made easier. I really enjoyed her style of teaching. If you attend class you will have most of the test answers, she gives them to us in our lecture! The book isn't a huge part of the exams but I learned a lot from it!
Second time with her and still the same: funny, interesting and informative. If you've taken her SXS class, there will be a repeat of material but you learn something new too. Low usage of books; exams based mostly on lectures. HED 320: 2 papers, 1 workbook, 1 workshop, 2 exams. Easy to ask questions and makes morning class worth attending.
Second time with her and still the same: funny, interesting and informative. If you've taken her SXS class, there will be a repeat of material but you learn something new too. 2nd time taking her class. There are some repeats in the material, but it's still informational. She continues to be funny and attention grabbing that makes it worth waking up for a morning class. Easy material with tests based mostly on lectures. HED 320: 2 papers, 1 workbook, 1 workshop, 2 exams.
This class is a joke. If you are taking it for Sexuality Studies, then enjoy the easy A. But if you are a Psych major and actually care about Psychology as a subject, please do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this course. Ivy Chen has a MPH and her day job is being the Health/Sex Ed teacher. 5th grade material. Absolutely NOT college material.
This class is disgusting. In the way that its not a science, it is all opinions. And horrifically heterocentric. She brushes over things that apply to homosexuals and makes it slightly awkward that she had to include an exception. Also everything is a joke, and we are just animals after all right? eww no! Only take for units.
Great class! You learn a lot about sex which is very helpful. It sucks that it's an 8 am class but it's still fun. Just do your work and you'll be fine. She has an awesome personality and a good sense of humor! I recommend her. But if you are gay/lesbian and get offended easily then don't take this calss because it's a heterosexual ONLY class.
There are 4 papers in total. Attendance is based on using the clicker remote. You need to buy her workbook and textbook, but u don't need to buy the COURSE READER (she barely refers to it). To get an A, go to class takes notes because she GIVE YOU MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAM QUESTIONS. She is entertaining for an 8:10AM class.
If you come to class and take notes, then this class will be a breeze. The midterm and final are EXACTLY based off the notes. 3 essays (just follow guidelines and you'll get an A), 1 midterm, and 1 final. Easy A.
Ivy is so awesome! She is a wonderful teacher, and is quite funny too. 8am sounds harsh, but she made it enjoyable. There are about 4 papers, a workbook, two tests (multiple choice), & a workshop. It sounds like a lot but it was an easy class and very applicable to life. I would totally take another class with Ivy!
Ivy Chen is awesome! She is funny, informative, and very interesting! Her class is worth going to at 8am because not only should you take the class for the grade, but for information on life! She's one of the best teachers I've had!
GREAT TEACHER! TAKE THIS CLASS! 3 SUPER EASY ESSAYS, AND INTERESTING TOPICS AND SHE'S SOO FUNNY!
Okay, maybe her sex and relationships class is easy but id say her contemporary sex class is only a tad bit harder because there is some anatomy involved. I made it out of the class with a B+ but thats because i didnt try that much, maybe if i HAD put in more effort, i wouldve made it with an A. Overall, this class was easy, but NOT stupid easy.
Great teacher! Young, engaging, passionate and knowledgeable about the topic. Lectures can be fun and diverse. She says "And so" CONSTANTLY! It drove me sort of nuts. I counted once, she said it close to 40 times in one class. Overall, a great class!
This class was super easy and itneresting and the teacher was awesome. The only thing I didn't like was that she was not available for office hours except for a few minutes after each class, which is hard if you have a class after. Other than that a great class.
Ivy is awesome! She loves her topic and has great stories. she will give you most of the exam questions in class, there are a few papers but they are fun ones. take her :)
The grade is based on doing 3 easy papers, a workbook, a health wrkshp, a midterm & final. Most of the time, you will be taking notes & answering survey questions. She's enthusiastic & kind. She's even comedic too,you will look forward to attending & I rarely got bored. I recommend taking the class w/ friends b/c the experience will be even better!
Someone else stated it well. If you are taking this for fun and love to indulge in your immature jokes, then you will have a great time. If you are expecting a real Psychology class, you will be disappointed. Bad essay topics. Oh and she makes you buy her book and a pointless reader (to keep the printing shop in business) totaling $150ish
Semester not even over & I think this class is a joke. Everything you learn is like from a cosmo magazine. Sure its sex but if you want to learn indepth about how it connects to relationships, you won't. She's also late everyday. I feel like I bought a really expensive magazine (class reader is also a joke).
I agree on the other comment about buying extensive materials. You have nothing to learn in this class unless you are 16. The state claim to short on $ but why forced students to take this kind of classes? It wastes both state and our $ too! However, she isn't hot at all.
Teenage sex ed. with naughty language. recycled jokes. unresponsive. late EVERY day with lame excuses, while most of her 600 students are on time. Ignorant post-teens will learn, older 20 & 30 something's will wonder why they took the class. Worst class ever! If you need to take a human sexualities class, try Carrington instead.
i'm so upset i bought the "class reader." it is a waste of money. guess who the author is? CHEN! she is making money off poor students. really?! i feel sick to my stomach. please do not buy it, and if you feel you must, team up with 5 other students to buy 1 copy. mine is just collecting dust. overall the class is a joke. never responds to emails.
I agree, the reader's not necessary. If you attend class, you will know all the answers to the tests. Paper topics suck, however she is an easy teacher. If you're looking for an in depth psych class I don't reccommend, but if you are looking for an easy A on fun topics, take her. She's always late
Expensive materials, useless lectures, cheap jokes. Class is designed for kids (PG13). Wasted money and who needs segment 3 anyway.
Unless some other professors, Ivy is a fun, upbeat teacher who is highly informed on her subject matter. Go to class, listen to her lectures and you will not be bored. Highly recommend her for your Segment 3. =)
She's very funny. Her class is very interesting. go to class and you will get A.
I wanted to like this class but Chen has some things to work on: she comes 10 mins late, she keeps us after class is over, some of her TAs are rude, her way of collecting and passing back papers is old. Chen is funny and it is good to know the material for life in general. Take the class and boost your GPA but you should know that problems as well.
You would also complain if a class was too hard and with my difficult classes I appreciated this class being easy. Class reader is useful for writing the papers and if you do not attend class regularly info is in there. She was late but lived in the san bruno fire area so im sure that effected her a lot and she still got through all the material.
This class is an easy A as long as you attend class regularly and take notes because the midterm and final are all based on the notes from lecture. There are three papers which are easy to do do well on as long as you follow the directions.
She is an interesting lecturer. I learned a lot from this class. The only thing i didn't like was that she came to class late.. which was annoying because I would wake up early to be ON TIME. ooooh well. I was lazy anyway! haha. Make sure to take notes and come to class. The tests are based on notes!
thank you
There is no reason to fail this class if you are there to take notes. However, I question the reason we need to purchase her books that are barely used in class. With 1000's of students per semester she is definitely making bank.
Awesome professor. Her lectures are funny and packed with information. If you just show up to the lecture she'll give you the questions that are on the final, with a wink. The only problem is that I never used all 3 books. Never even opened one of them. Only used the other because it's worth 5 percent of your grade.
Easy. Three short essays, MC midterm/final, workshop, workbook. Expectations are very clear. Only problem is that she *always* arrives 10-15 min late, books cost a fortune even though we dont need/use them much. She's very funny, but tends to make vast generalizations. Don't expect a very academic experience, but I still recommend her for an easy A
Great professor. Easy class. Don't buy the reader. Buy the anthology with the workbook. Come to class and get all answers to the test. She's usually 5-10 mins late every day. Get used to it, just go in later. 3 Papers, 2 Tests, Easy A. Take this class! Fun information and can help you in the real world.
Great professor. she has a sense of humor when teaching the material so its not dry or dull. The papers are easy to write. there's a health workshop and workbook as well, but the answers are in the back. the midterm is simple and same with the final; she gives you the answers everyday in lectures, so take notes
I always dread going to an 8am class but it's worth seeing a beautiful face in the morning!
simply the best, amazing class, professor, you will learn so much about relationships and you will be able to lead on a healthy life after this class. i highly recomond her and her classes. this is the best as it can get
Great class, loved it. Easy A. She's super nice and approachable, and funny. She can keep you up in this 8 o clock class. Her exams is easy as long as you go to class, she will tell you exactly what will be on the exam. She is also very attractive.
she is great!! she will definitely wake u up in the morning! she makes lecture super interesting with all her stories in between lectures. she's really nice and understanding. the class is mostly about the relationship part than the sex. i highly recommend this professor!
Best class for segment III cluster if you need it. Super easy and shes funny. It is almost impossible to fail, unless you dont go to class. Go to class take notes and you are set for the class. Notes=test questions. Take Her highly recommend
Hilarious and you'll never ever be bored. Copy all her powerpoints because that's pretty much 80% of the exam. Have to attend 1 workshop, complete the workbook, write a couple papers. Awesome teacher!
Ivy's awesome! she gives you a wonderful reason to wake up at 8 am for class... she'll entertain you. a lot of it is common knowledge, but she talks about a lot of things that people think about, but never say outloud. the class is comfortable and I highly recommend taking her!
Ivy is an amazing teacher. She truly cares about students and their futures. I have to wake up and sit in this class at 8am, but I never regret it or start to fall asleep. She keeps it interesting and keeps the pace going. She's very fun and relatable. Many of the topics have helped me in my life and it's almost like a self-help class!
She is so funny and makes her class fun too. I like her.
Ivy is a great teacher. Always enthusiastic about the subject and her voice is not boring at all. Papers are easy and graded fairly by her TA's. Only 1 midterm, final, and no hw. Only thing I didn't like was paying for the books, barely used em. Could easily get by without. Best class at State in my opinion...highly recommend for Seg III GE's!
This class is an excuse for Ivy Chen to sell books. The articles she puts together and makes you buy can be posted to iLearn at NO cost to students. Instead, she makes a fat profit by compiling articles to make THREE books, and making her class of 500+ students buy them all. Expensive iClicker is pointless too.Take SXS400 with Carrington instead!
She is the best! Clear and on point. Hot and funny. Her class is interesting, she makes you want to come to class and learn. I love her. I don't know what more to say, She has to be one of THEEE best teachers I have had.
THIS IS A MUST!!!
I really liked this class! Getting up at the butt-crack of dawn wasn't too bad since it was so enjoyable to attend! She's understanding about tardiness, attendance is taken at the end of class. Utilize the "re-grade" option, those TAs can be.... well you know. Buy a clicker, take notes, write a couple papers, and you're good. HTH!
Chen is an easy health ed requirement for segment 3. She's heavily powerpoint, in a theatre of 200+ students, so it's easy to NOT take this class seriously. I hardly read the books, just showed to lecture, did all my papers on time and studied the night b4 the midterm/final (all scantron) and I got an A. She's very knowledgeable.
expensive class, over 150 dollar if you buy everything. She is pretty funny and helpful. I really enjoy her class, learn a lot about relationship in general. The material is nothing surprising but make me realized mistakes I made in the past.
Attend class, she's great to wake up to so 8 in the morning is not an issue. Essay topics are interesting. Tests are pretty difficult, but if you go to class regularly you'll at least get a C on them since she gives you test answers in the lecture. Definitely take this class, the videos and lecture topics are always very interesting.
Pretty straight forward class. She takes attendance via a clicker. go to lectures because they are interesting and the questions that she ask during lectures are the same questions on the test.
Very funny and helpful, easy to follow and very knowledgeable. However, extremely frustrating that she was at least 20 mins late to nearly every class. If I have to be in class at 8:10 then the professor should be too! Still would take her again though..
She is funny! 8am classes are so worth getting up for her. Easy class and learned a lot, DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, you wont need it. Show up for class and it is a easy A.
She is funny and the class is interesting. The lecture made me think. I will suggest you to take this class if you simply want to up your grade or master more methods on handle relationship problems, she even taught us how to make a good break up.But the Bad thing is the textbook & the class reader are really expensive and she NEVER use them!
AWESOME & EASY SEG III req! Early class but she's so full of energy you'll wake rt up. Takes attendance (iclicker). 3 tests covering lecture and readings...but mainly lecture...she will literally tell you what will be on tests! Ivy Chen is one of SFSU greatest professors!
She is at least 10 minutes late EVERY day. After announcements each class is only 30 minutes long. She was on time 3 times all semester. Day 1, Midterm, FInal.
Best professor I've ever had. I LOVED going to class, even though it was at 8am it was so interesting and she made it really fun. She's hilarious and you can tell she loves teaching. I got an A, just go to class and do ALL the work. Tests are very straight forward. My fave class!
Great teacher! She keeps everything interesting. Pretty easy class. The only things that bothered me were her tardiness and how she would spend a long time doing the announcements.
Best teacher I have had here so far! So much energy and really entertaining. She gives you all you need for tests with no surprises or tricks up her sleeve. This was by far the most interesting, FUN class ever. Work load is perfect. She leaves you hungry for more, and that is saying a lot for 8am. Even the reading material is entertaining.
Really easy class. 3 essays with clear guidelines. 1 workbook that has to be completed by the end of the semester. A class reader is involved, but share it with a friend. You need that for the essays. Must do a workshop, which I suggest you must do in the beginning of the semester. Overall, take this class even though it's at 8am.
Easy class, but you should really attend class and take notes in order to do well on the exams! She's super nice and funny though, great teacher!
She was very funny and easy to understand. Go to lectures!!! only problem is that her TA's do most of the grading so be prepared to question the graded paper you got. Interesting class
Really easy as long as you go to lecture. She does not require you to go to class, but I guarantee you will not have to read or study for the class if you attend lectures. Tests are very straight forward. She is hilarious, and makes it fun to go to an 8 am class. Only downfall was the materials were quite expensive for this class.
I enjoyed the class. Some of the reading was redundant and at times contradictory. She is really cool and nice. I feel that I got unlucky with my TA who graded me down under an A when it was really hyper technical errors. I had a good grade, but feel I deserved higher for what I put into it. Some people had very easy TA so it was luck of the draw.
Ivy is really cool. She makes the topic enjoyable and cracks jokes. She's got a full class. When we had to take midterms and the final there were 300+ people there. But during the semester not a lot of them showed up. She has 3-4 text books I didn't have the main one because it's $300. Not a lot of homework and she puts a majority of the notes onli
Class is pretty easy, but her TAs grade so harshly on the papers that she assigns us. I feel like they enjoy making your paper a red mess...but luckily, she allows you to submit regrades. I am just flabbergasted that citation is worth 20% of your paper, and this is just a health class too...not an English course.
Its fairly easy for an upper div class!I recommend keeping up w/the wrkbk throughout the semester. 3-4 papers, pretty basic topics and you should be fine if you proof read. iClickers are needed so attd is taken daily.Tests are all from lecture (powerpoint) and some wkbk.Don't buy the Reader,it's just another option for essays. Overall, easy A!
Ivy was awesome. Class was chilled, easy, and interesting. For the exams, she will tell you in lecture what will be on it and look through the workbook. The papers were easy, just follow her instructions. For the class reader, share it with a friend.
Ivy makes coming to an 8am class so enjoyable. She's so funny and makes the course material relevant to the students' sex lives. She's the best sexuality health educator ever! I'm so happy to have had her as an instructor. She really cares about her students succeeding. You must take her!
I love her energy and she is so funny!
Ivy tells you what will be on the test and the paper topics are so much fun! I wish she taught more upper division courses!
Easy, fun, interesting class. One issue that really bothered me was that she was 5-8 mins late to every single class. Then, she would spend another few minutes setting up her computer and then spend another 5 minutes going over the same announcements every day. She talks to the class like we're 5 years old, repeating obvious things over and over.
She's consistently late every class meeting but is the best sex health educator you can learn from!
She gives you the notes for the exams so that makes it easy to study. Make sure you do the workbook weekly so you don't have to do it all at once. Too many assignments close together but they are pretty easy. Fun teacher, really interesting class. I didn't like some of her helpers though.
Professor Ivy Chen makes an 8AM class so enjoyable. I just come to the theater and enjoy her lectures. She's awesome and hilarious! People underestimate how hard her exams will be and end up not getting a good grade so make sure to study and turn everything in on time!
Ivy is amazing! I have taken two classes with her and love the way she teaches. As long as you take notes, her class is super interesting and easy. Take any of her sexuality classes, she's one of the best lecturers and she knows her stuff.
She's one funny prof! Sit in front and you will be both awake and it also make the jokes 10x funnier! Your notebook is the holy grail to your success! Make sure to jot down stuff from lecture and go over a few readings before test. There are two papers during the semester and you can resubmit them if you find that your paper is unfairly graded
Easy class. 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 papers. One is a self paper and the other is a controversial topic paper, she provides the topics. Very helpful and tells you what will be on the tests if you go to class. Requires iclicker for attendace. Easy A!
She is one of those people: smart, funny, beautiful...Ah! Most importantly: She is a great teacher. She is knowledgable, understandable, patient, and very polite. Plus: She is hilarious and she loves what she does! The bad thing: always late, seriously. The point is: I strongly recommend her.
Great teacher! Definitely made it worth going to class at 8am. She's funny and keeps class interesting and fun. Go to lectures and she tells you EXACTLY what to take note of for the midterm and final.
LOVE this professor! 8am learning about sex, WHY NOT! She gives you most of the test questions in class, but you have to remember small things from the book full of articles. Exams are 50 Qs. but not hard if you study. Suggestions: do rough drafts for the papers (3). Try to attend class to get the test questions or make a buddy! Super fun professor
I barely learned anything from this class because it's a high school sex-ed class. If you really wanna learn something, take Dr. Carrington's class because he is a far better professor than Ivy. She always late at least 5 minutes and do redundant class announcements over and over again. Also essay topics are unbelievably stupid.
Ivy is an awesome instructor. The class is very chilled even though it was early in the morning. The exams were very straightforward. For the papers, just follow the rubric and you will do well. Highly recommend this class.
favorite class i took this semester! very easy and straight forward. everything you learn really applies to life and helps . i loved going to class even if it was at 8 AM. some subjects are more interesting than others. gives you test answers, simple essays, and easy workbook. i recommend. gonna miss this class!
Ivy is a wonderful professor and I highly recommend this class!! That said, DO NOT BUY THE ICLICKER 2 SHE REQUIRES FOR ATTENDANCE! Every semester she tells students (after the final) that her iclicker software does not work and that everyone will receive automatic attendance points. So do not spend that $50! Otherwise, this class is wonderful!!
Ivy Chen is a great teacher, and I loved going to this class!! It is the best class I have ever taken at State. I hated that the TA's graded our papers though...(they were harsh and unfair and they were not even the teachers of the class), but it is still a good class. Don't buy "the clicker"--it is not necessary and costs a lot. Take this class!
Ivy is Awesome She is very funny and knows how to keep everyone interested. I would love taking more classes with her
It is tough for the tests. You have to read 3 books.
Took her sex and relationships class last semester and it was easy as pie so I took this one too to see if it was basically the same. It was. 2 papers, 5 pages each, 2 test each non cumulative and an easy workbook. Pretty easy class, just put in some effort and you should pass with an A. My friend failed the 1st exam but still got an A lolol
Ivy is a wonderful teacher. Uses many visual aids to well, aid in our learning. Papers are easy and is given a grading criteria example sheet. It's technically a guideline , if you follow it, you'll get an A. I recommend her class because it correlates with our lives, with sex and all. Very understanding if you miss a midterm, you can take it later
I found SXS 320 to be really interesting Professor Chen actually makes it fun. My only problem with the class is that I wish she would give out a study guide for the test. I found it was hard to study for them!
She's pretty easy and super friendly. I barely read for either classes except to study for the midterm and final. As long as you go to class and pay attention, the tests will be a breeze. The papers weren't difficult at all.
She is awesome, even those i took this class for credit and start at 8 in the morning, but never get sleepy and learned a lot. Recommended to both people who take it for major or credit.
Ivy is so nice & really kept me awake! She wants you to succeed on her exams. Sadly her TA's do the grading for her and let me just say, they clearly forget they're students themselves. They give students D's on papers & mark off things for bs reasons. I hope they have to deal with the same thing one day. They give Ivy a bad name!
I loved her class ! It was all straight forward and she didn't over talk. She gives you all the lectures notes so not much writing. 2 papers and a midterm for the first half of the semester and the final is just what you learned from after the midterm until final day of class
The class is pretty easy but boy is it tedious showing up every day. She's anywhere from 5-15 minutes late DAILY and a lot of the time she's rushing to fit everything in because she can't seem to be on time. She uses way too many fillers in her speech and it's distracting. She's helpful but I always felt like she was condescending towards me.
Class somewhat easy. There are two papers you have to write about your own experience, but even so the T.A will mark some things wrong. Some of the comments in here say that is an easy B, but in reality the average grade is C.
super easy class! there are quite a papers, but they're really easy to get good grades on if you stick to her checklist. She has 2 exams, but if you go to every class and take notes, you should be fine. This class is at 8am and she's late for EVERY class which i find irritating, but oh well. Also, attendance is monitored with clickers
Ivy Chen is a wonderful professor! I'm SO glad I took her class. She is funny & she makes me want to go to class at 8 am. Topics are relatable to anyone looking to learn about relationships and sex! I would definitely take this class again. It's important to study for her exams. Material is largely based on lecture notes!
Most info is common sense & predictable. Attend class for clicker points. Stick to the grading rubric for each paper, they're graded by the TA's. Do workbook and papers ahead of time. Look over notes & find Quizlet's online to help you study faster. I studied 3 different ones & got a 99% on her final exam. Easy, interesting class.
Omg she's so funny and she tells her students to call her Ivy lol. Her lectures are pretty interesting compared to other professors' lectures and her assignments are easy, too. Just study her online outlines and notes (she'll tell you what's on the test) and follow the detailed requirements for papers and you'll excel!!!
It seems like she really wants her students to succeed. Clicker questions count for attendance, she puts the notes up online, and tests are on familiar material-no tricks. She also invites quest speakers to come into class, and makes her expectations clear and attainable. Fantastic professor, great person and interesting class!
Ivy is amazing and lays out the course perfectly! 2 4-page papers, 1 short one, 1 workbook due at the end of the semester, 1 midterm and 1 final, both based primarily on lecture slides. She gives tons of opportunities to make up assignments and turn them in late. Bonus boost in grade for optional attendance. Great lecturer!
Fantastic. The professor this city needs and deserves. Speaks quick and highly knowledgeable about her topics. She sure knows how to make the class laugh! Simply amazing.
Ivy is an interesting lecturer, but consistently shows up 5-15 minutes late every class. This gets frustrating when she rushes through topics at the end of class. The exams are knit-picky and ask very specific questions, rather than questions that show a general understanding. It's not a tough class though. Show up and you'll do fine.
Her TA's are horrible but she is great! The TA's grade everything and they are harsh graders so after they grade it and give it back make sure you check their grading and if you don't agree talk to Ivy!
Loved this class but her TA's are terrible. They forget that they are students too and grade the papers so harsh!! Essays are pretty easy to do. Attendance is 2% extra credit only if you attend 90% of the lectures. She does come late every day which can get annoying. Amazing teacher and fun class!
Ivy herself is really kind and easy to talk to. But she is late every class, you wind up having to come later. Her class felt more like a high school sex-ed class. I really didn't gain much new information from it in terms of psychology. Only 3 papers, which are easy enough, but her TAs grade really harsh. Thankfully, there are regrades.
Don't take!!!
Very clear about expectations. All notes, lectures, and videos are posted on her website. Takes late papers with a deduction. I'd say, overall very fair. Brings in guest speakers to switch things up from time to time. Stay on top of the workbook and papers and you should be fine. Papers are two pages at most, nothing crazy.
Really a terrible teacher. Always late and all her lectures on contemporary sexuality are pseudo-science. The rest are all about basic high school sex-ed. She spends most of the time discussing what happens through puberty (we all went through it already, we know!). Talks down to the class like none of us have any kids or have experience here.
Not a very educational course unless you have yet to go through puberty. She shows a lot of youtube videos and rushes her lectures. I never once opened either book she required and got a B overall. Most midterm/final questions/answers are discussed in lectures so it's easy to breeze by with little/no effort.
Really can't think of a worse teacher I've had. It's pretty obvious she doesn't actually research anything she lectures on, just pulls whatever popular idea is out there and runs with it without any critical thinking. On the plus side, she doesn't expect any critical thinking. Easy A course, just don't expect to learn much.
She says the books are "mandatory" but they really aren't. One of the workbooks has questions that are worth 5% of the grade but if you score well on the written papers and exams, you can still easily get an A without turning it in at all (and saving yourself the $40 she charges for it). Never once opened the other book and still passed well.
If you show up to lecture and do the readings you are guaranteed a good grade. She is very informative/helpful & always takes time each lecture to remind students of upcoming due dates and sexual health related events. Taking Contemporary Sexuality really had me think about my own sexual health and inspired me to make beneficial changes in my life.
Ivy herself is a great person. Shes funny and super understanding. What was frustrating for me was her ability to be on time She would show up 10-20 mins late The class itself is super easy Midterm is an easy A if you study. Papers are easy too. I didnt think the tas were to harsh. Just follow the format & its an easy A. Attendance not mandarory
She'll say you need to buy the book and workbook but I didn't use either and passed with an A. SFSU doesn't even stock her workbook, she has some guy come in and sell them to her class for cash only (seemed like a profit scam). She was never on time to any lecture and she'd sometimes try to hold the class passed the end time.
She's hard to get in contact w/ outside of class even though she has 4+ student aids. She never showed up on time which got pretty annoying. I don't feel like she taught me anything new or worthwhile. If you show up to the lectures though, she'll give you all the answers to the exams so it's an easy A. Don't buy the books, you won't use them.
Clear grading criteria, but she's very biased in her lectures. Her sources were sketchy, lots of youtube videos. Felt like the class was a waste of my time. I wanted to learn about contemporary sexuality, but we spent most the time talking about puberty and social media movements. Not very college-level educational. Also, don't buy the books!
This prof holds the record for the number of times I walked out of the lecture because it was so far off base and a total waste of my time & money. Still passed with an A and didn't look at any of the "required materials" (save your money, don't get the books). You won't get an education from this instructor but your GPA will improve/remain high.
Ivy lectures every single day. Only participation is clicker questions. Thats all the class is. Lectures, a few easy essays, a midterm, and a final. Ivy is really sweet and funny too!
Save your $ and take this requirement at a junior college. If you have to take it at SFSU, don't take this professor. She was always late, never available via email, and talked to us like we were 12. Spent an awkward amount of time looking at male organs and skimmed over females and played very biased videos most days. Not education-based at all.
If you want an easy A, this class is for you. Don't get the books. I never read any of the materials and still got an A. If you want accurate science (not popular science) and a knowledgeable instructor, look elsewhere.
She made more excuses than my 3 yr old does about going to bed on time. Didn't answer e-mails but sent out endless spam, was 10-20 mins late to every lecture (claimed she was sick but reviews show this is a years-old problem), tried holding the class after, and was totally misinformed in her lessons. I do not recommend this instructor at all.
Ivy is AWESOME! I took 2 of her classes in one semester and they were my favorites! She has a great syllabus and is pretty clear with her expectations as well as our assignments. I don't like that we had to buy SO MANY books (expensive ones) which she also co-authors, of course. Other than that, I really enjoyed it and totally recommend her classes
She is an okay teacher. Sometimes she is funny. Over all the course was okay. Boring at times.
Always 10-15 minutes late. Then she spends another 10 talking about non-important things until we actually get into lecture. The class is basically sex ed, common knowledge. I wouldn't purchase her book, and save $50 or how ever much it is. You do need to purchase the workbook. The three essays are easy. This class doesn't require much effort.
Very easy class. You are graded by a few things, so make sure you put in effort for those essays. Study for the midterm (50 questions) & final (100 questions & its cummulative). You get an additional 3% extra credit for attendance at the end of the semester. Workbook & healthshop you must do. Annoying thing is that she comes in late all the time.
Ivys fun and her class is interesting. The tests are based on clicker questions and lectures, sometimes she throws in stuff from the books. I didnt buy the book cause they were expensive and it seemed like she just wanted to advertise her book. Its worth 5% of your grade. 3 papers that were easy. A midterm, and a final thsts cumulative.
I actually really enjoyed her class! Easy pass to with an A long as you do the exams, tests, and workbook well. Exams are based off lectures & iclicker Q and some from her book. Essays are ok and she pretty much laid out what she wants but her TAs grade pretty strict so make sure to follow the format.
We Stan Ivy Chen she is one of the few good professors at this university. She makes classes really fun and interactive which in my opinion helps students learn much better rather than a full by the book lecture.
she does clicker question which count for attendance, and attendance is extra credit. Turn in the essays in on time, and get full credit. The T.A. grade hard and take off points for unnecessary things, but just tell Ivy and she will change the grade. Get the workbook because it is an easy 10 points.
show everyday to get attendance points, get the workbook which is an easy 10 points, do the essays and if the T.A. gives a low grade then tell Ivy and she will change the grade. she gives the answers to the test questions in class.
Ivy's lectures are very entertaining! She shows many video clips relevant to lecture and includes jokes. She is very clear on what she expects in class and what to do to pass/get a good grade. Attendance is extra credit. 3 papers. Midterm and final are multiple choice and T/F. Currently taking SXS/PSY 320 with her as well for a summer course.
Because of the size of the class she is pretty inaccessible during class as well as through email. She also talks nonstop, almost a constant stream of commentary through the entire (50 min) class. She also does not source any of her stats during lecture and does not have any sources on her lecture notes either. It seems sketchy that there is none.
3 papers- soc. justice, article critique, organization.(25%) *IMPORTANT* LECTURE NOTES w/ test ?'s & answers GIVEN to YOU on ilearn! RENT iCLICKER 3% xtra cred; this allows you to get F on wrkbook (5%) & pass w/ an A. Health wrkshp (5%) can account for wrkbook if you're lazy:) get A/B on midterm & final! *scan articles/answer workbk quest.*
3 papers with very clear instructions just follow them and it's an easy A. She has TA's that review your drafts to make corrections. Midterm has 50 questions and final 100 questions. Final is harder because it's more of the biological aspect where you need to label body parts. Class average wasn't great so so she gave everyone an extra 9 points.
Professor Chen is how you'd imagine Sex Ed in high school to be. Easy upper division class to fulfill your credits! Nothing special, nothing over the top. Graded by three essays, one midterm, and iClicker attendance. Due to Covid-19 the final was broken down by vote into two quizzes via iLearn. Exams and quizzes are multiple choice & true or false.
I really enjoyed Ivy's class and she's super cool and loves to show pictures of her dog. She posts the lectures so it's easy to study and her tests aren't difficult if you review the notes. An iClicker is required to get participation so bring yours and show up to lectures!
Really interesting class. Everything is super clear and formatted nicely. No final exam and three essays that are really easy. Cares about her students.
Professor Chen is actually quite awesome. Unfortunately, because we're not in-person, the course is easy to do without doing too much work - unfortunate because there is a *lot* to learn from her lectures and materials. Overall, though, I would recommend because it is still comprehensive and fun to take!
All I really need to say is if sex ed in high school was taught the way this class was, the view on sex would be way different, more educated and a lot more positive. Easy class and super interesting, thought provoking material. If you follow her grading rubric for papers, you'll get an A or B every time. Only 5 quizzes with 30 or so questions.
I have taken Professor Chen twice and she is great! Her in-person and online classes are set up very similarly. She gives/posts lectures and provides supplemental notes. She also assigns article readings, but it's doable., nothing too crazy. She gives a few papers which are very easy- she gives a very detailed rubric, and gives a few quizzes. Easy!
MY QUEEN. Divided into sections & topics; lecture vids., with mandatory readings/podcasts/videos to watch you might be asked abt them on quizzes. 1 QUIZ per section (5) & they're EASY if your updated on readings & videos. A lot of the answers are from her notes. Easy papers after each quiz w/ clear expectations + example papers. TAKE THIS CLASS
I would recommend this class. She is very organized from day 1. Semester is broken up into 5 sections with a section taking up 3 weeks or so. In that timespan you need to watch the videos and readings and do a quiz at the end. She provides lecture notes so it helps on the quiz. Also have to do a workshop/survey. Really enjoyed this class.
She is the one professor I believe everyone should experience, she's super organized she will give you countless of resources to check out on each topic. She is worth taking she's extraordinary!!!! She's one of those people that were born to teach you will love her, as long as you stay on top of the work you'll be fine.
This class was overall easy, informative, and just interesting!!! I looked forward to online lecture videos bc they were short, to the point, she's funny and informative. She knows how to talk to students and is in touch with dating and sex. Ivy's really clear on what she expects and I just found everything to be very do able. Overall interesting!!
I took Professor Chen's contemporary sexuality class, asychronous. This class is great. There are a few lecture videos for each test that are pretty short, there are about four essays that include heavily detailed prompts, and the tests are pulled straight from the lectures. I recommend this class if you want to learn and get a good grade.
Love her. So easy for anyone with a full time job.
5 quizzes that open and close on Fridays each worth 10%, 3 essays, a course reflection forum, and must participate in at least one workshop worth 5% of grade and an extra workshop for 3% extra credit. You have at least 3 weeks to take notes of 5 chapters that follow a quiz and then an essay. First two essays are easy, the last one is a bit harder
A LOT of readings and lectures and quizzes are only 1 minute per question. Pretty easy course just quizzes once a week and an assignment. Just make sure to read and watch the lectures and you'll pass the quizzes. Highly recommend for an easy humanities course.
Contemporary sexuality is one of the best classes to take with Ivy Chen. It is an easy A as long as you do everything you're supposed to. There is a quiz and a few papers every week but its nothing extreme, its actually super simple. Just be sure to follow the directions as shown for everything.
All around great professor! Her class is interesting and easy to follow, she also is extremely nice and is willing to give extensions in times of need as long as you reach out.
Pretty easy class, all you do is watch the lecture and take the corresponding quizzes. There were a few really easy essays as well. Ilearn is very easy to understand and everything is very clear cut on how the grading works. She is also very responsive to emails if you have any questions!
5 quizzes that aren't hard if you do the lectures and readings + videos. There are 3 essays, all 3 are easy but the 3rd one can be more difficult. 1 discussion that's easy af. 1 required workshop easy just attend + extra credit if you attend another. Love her so much would def take again since she's asynch.
Great class. 5 timed 30min quizzes, 3 essays, and 1 work shop with an extra credit opportunity (2nd workshop). Her lectures are hilarious, relevant and informative. I found the per all class was enjoyable and would take another class of her's if I needed it for my major. You can work at your own pace for the most part, which makes it chill.
Professor Chen's course was very structured, relevant, inclusive, and educational! Clear syllabus and grading criteria. While there are several lectures, a few quizzes, and three papers, they are all engaging and fun! Learning about sex and relationships could not be any more relatable and down-to-earth. Great course!
I loved taking this class. It was very organized and super easy and interesting. As long as you do the work you'll pass the class. Only down side is that her TA's grade the papers and they make mistakes. However, Professor Chen is overall very helpful and cares about her students passing. I highly recommend this class!
Her classes are easy and they're made for a 100% pass rate. I don't remember studying for her classes at all. Her questions on the quizzes are all from the lectures. I don't even think she does anything as a professor? Quizzes are automatically graded and she has a ton of TAs to read essays, check workbooks & they also compile the grades for her.
Professor Chen is amazing! Her course is very organized and set up to receive an A! There are 5 quizzes(10% each), 4 written assignments(10%,12%,18%,5%), and one required health workshop that you must attend(5%) that make up your grade for the course. Would def recommend taking this course for an easy A + the material is very interesting.
Great class. 5 quizzes throughout the whole semester , 30 questions in 30 mins which is kinda crazy imo . Watch the lectures and readings/videos she posts you will do good in the quizzes. 3 essays throughout the semester which is really easy. I recommend this class because you learn a lot !
Ivy Chen is a very easygoing professor. Best piece of advice: COMMUNICATE. Responsive and understanding. This class was so easy because it was interesting. You write 3 or 4 papers throughout the semester quizzes based on the slides and videos. I took this class alongside BIO 330 and they were teaching similar topics each week.
Easy A! Take her class. You won't regret it. She is super understanding and nice.
Very informative and interesting class. I love her lecture videos. They range in length, but she has a nice voice to listen to. Sections last a week or so with a quiz at the end of each (5 quizzes) and three writing assignments. Rubrics for the writing assignments are very clear. Prof is sweet and engaging. Wish I had an in person class with her
this class was really easy and really interesting. attending one health workshop is mandatory, but they were actually intriguing so I went to multiple! if you need to satisfy your upper-division general education requirements, take a class with ivy. she's really sweet and caring! i'm going to take another class with her next semester!
TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Chen is very interesting and there was never a day in class was I bored. There is a total of 5 quizzes in the semester where it is timed but they're really easy to pass as all answers are on the articles and lessons she post. There are also 3 assignments that is needed to be done but they're also really easy.
I took this asynch class because its an elective for the public health course and I gotta say, I LOVED THIS CLASS! over all so simple, 3 essays , 5 quizzes and you have like 1-2 weeks to go over the topics and articles she posted! make sure to read the articles+ other stuff , they are on the quiz, Ivy was so kind and understanding!
Love Ivy so much that I'm taking another async class with her next semester. For her async class she does a quiz a month with multiple choice questions and you can just listen to the lectures because she already has notes written for you that you can use for the quiz. She was easy to reach by email and has the cutest Pomeranians ever
This professor is great and the class was easy and educational. I would take another class with her. Everything on the syllabus is what we did. The quizzes are thirty minutes and easy, if you read the lecture. The essays were just questions from the lecture. I work two jobs and was able to still enjoy my weekends. Take this class!!!!
Professor Chen is super passionate about teaching this contemporary sexuality class and cares a lot about her students. Her class consisted of quizzes and papers. The class was organized into three weeks intervals and was pretty straightforward. Overall, it was a pleasure taking her class and hopefully I could take her class again in the future
I took a course that I saw these reviews and she seems like a very passionate person, but I think a guard to communications course and I was waiting at the time I was taking her class at the same time I had to write essays for her which is fine I feel my quizzes and essays word average not the best, but not the worst. I feel like I was wrong
She is a great teacher if you get a chance please take her before taking her class I had no or very little idea about sexuality but after taking her class I feel fully informed. It is a short lecture but in a very large room. Always try to bring an electronic device in her class because she will ask you about survey.
My second class with her and I love it. Ivy is funny, understanding, and knowledgeable. Her lectures are pretty interesting (plus she brings her dogs to class)! If you ask her for an extension on any work she will gladly give it without asking for a "valid" reason! Her class is an easy A, 3 easy essays and multiple choice quizzes every other week.
I love taking classes with Professor Chen, this one was no different. The assignments are very clear, there were three short essays and about five open note exams/quizzes. This course is very interesting, I learned a lot about my own relationships, and it's a pretty easy class overall.
She is a great teacher! There are 5 tests and 3 papers but they are pretty easy.
Really enjoyed her class and the assignments. Everything was straightforwards. A lot of the class is you teaching yourself so if you don't work well with that, then skip this class. Overall very easy and she was great at communication.
Ivy was seriously one of my favorite professors I've ever taken at SFSU. She's funny and responsive to her students. Her lectures in this course were very fun and informative; she genuinely cares about what she speaks about which shows on her RMP profile. Would take again if I could.
This professor was AMAZING! She is the best professor I've taken at SFSU, she cares about her students. All of her lectures are fun and interesting. I will be taking another course in the future. The class was fun and engaging and she also brings in her adorable pomeranians! All her assignments and homeworks were fun to do! Highly recommend!
Ivy really is a great professor and you can tell she cares about what she's teaching, and cares about her students. Overall the coursework is manageable to complete, but Ivy is also very understanding and easy to work with if any assignments need to be made up. The hardest part was the quizzes because you only get 30 minutes for 30 questions. 10/10
She gives great and relevant lectures on sex and relationships. The quizzes are pretty spaced out so you have tons of time to review everything. Quizzes are open notes and everything can be found in the lectures and readings.
Her class was interesting and not too hard. She enjoys her topic and it shows in her lectures. I'm older though, and most of the topics covered in class I feel I've learned from life experience already. The section on breaking up was interesting and might help younger students who are still dating.
Ivy is a fantastic professor - her lectures are engaging, and the coursework is manageable. The quizzes can be tricky, but using unstuckstudy ai, ChatGPT, and the readings helped me ace the class. Highly recommend!
3 essays and a couple easy quizzes! Amazing professor with a good heart. She teaches valuable lessons that are important outside of the class
Ivy Chen creates a safe inclusive environment for all of her students. She brings her dogs to class so that's an additional plus. She holds a lot of value in the lectures and few assignments, IMO not hard to ace this class. Take it!
I took her online over the Spring Semester '25, and her class was very straightforward with a rubric and grading scale. She is very open and inclusive to all, definitely recommend taking her class to satisfy your upper division ge requirement!
Prof. Chen was a very passionate and engaging instructor. Everything is very straightforward and simple in her class, and she is easy to reach for questions or help. She gives good feedback too. Definitely recommend.
Very easy class, she's really engaging. She also brings her dogs to class! Attendance is mandatory! But I rarely went and still passed. There's not really much to do for this class, you can show up with nothing in hand and still learn. The quizzes are pretty easy. She lays out everything for you so it would very difficult to fail this class
