The teacher teaches what she wants not what is required in the coarse and confuses herself when she talks. Her tests are in a confusing format meant to trick you and you have no life if you have her
Literally, hated this class more than anything. It was her first year (2014) and let me tell you, I've never done so poorly in a class before. I got a 55% on my second test and a little higher on the first. The final is comprehensive and you can study for 15 hours and most likely won't make about a C.
She asks you to give feedback but she doesn't really consider it. She puts up review material that isn't helpful and has a tendency to teach unnecessary information instead of what is useful and actually needs to be taught.
Dont ever take this class with her she will ruin your chances of ever getting into a pre-medpre-dentalpre-pharm school
Dr. Fitzgerald knows what she is talking about, but isn't always the best at presenting it in a very clear manner. Her tests are pretty difficult and to do well you have to really understand the content, not just memorization.
Fitzgerald is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She admits to "tricking her students on the tests". Her lectures are hard to follow and her study guides do not go along with the test. She makes a entry level class that is supposed to be easy, one of the hardest classes I have taken.
I graduated high school with a 3.9 GPA. I never thought I would be struggling to pass a class like I am with Ivy. Her tests don't follow the material taught in class and there is a daily quiz over the most minor pieces of information. In her class I currently have a 58%. In the lab portion I have a 93%. I would strongly advise not taking her.
She is smart but cannot explain well. Gives you pointless info that isn't on the test. The test has info that was never seen before. Lectures are boring and there is a daily quiz which everyone fails.
Interesting course, but Fitzgerald goes way too in depth for an introductory class. For example, when studying the immune system in INTRODUCTORY TO BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, expecting us to understand and test on the molecular basis of immunoglobulin formation does not seem fair, especially when sections with Dr. Smith aren't held to this expectation.
Ivy is really not a bad teacher like everyone says that she is. Everyone is just too stupid and too lazy to study for her tests, which a you get a study guide in advance that tells you exactly what will be on the tests. Also, study the PowerPoints! Everything from the tests are from the PowerPoints. Overall, I got an A.
Ivy is a great instructor and many people taking this course do not understand that you need to study the material outside of class. Everything she will quiz you on is directly from her powerpoints. Like all BMS classes, it is easy to get a good grade if you are willing to do the work. Ivy is not there to pass you along like a high school teacher.
BMS 110 isn't a hard class. Ivy does not understand a lot of the material she is teaching and when you ask questions this is clear. She is willing to help when she can and is good about putting fair grades up. Her tests aren't easy but if you study you'll do fine. Be prepared to pay attention and take notes.
I feel like Ivy really knows her stuff but can't dumb it down for students. She's funny and awkward she's just not the best teacher yet. Do not take her if you're looking for an easy A. Or even an easy B.
You can study the powerpoints (which she just read off of during class) and you can read the book, none of that matters though. The tests are just whatever random ideas come to her head. Study weeks in advance or you won't pass. Just google everything over the topic.
Awful teacher, great person. She is very understanding if you have a problem and talk to her after class. Her tests are crazy hard; you NEED to study. Her lectures do not make much sense, so you have to really read her PPT lectures and take some of your own notes from what she said that wasn't on the PPT. Get ready to take quizzes galore.
She does offer to help you understand that information, if you want to set up a time to meet with her. However, the tests are more in depth than what her notes offer. The study material is just a generic of what you need to know for the tests, but the tests that she makes confuses you with the wording.
Worst professor I've ever had. Contradicts herself on the information constantly.
Daily quizzes will tank your grade, Ivy expects you to master the material by the end of class or the next class period. Tests are awful, nothing like her lecture. I don't even know if she understands what she's teaching in lecture. Do not take her.
I honestly don't have the words to describe her. But I can tell you that she thinks its funny that we fail her tests or that we don't understand most of her lessons. It's common sense when your class's test average is D, you make it easier not harder! you don't try and "trick" students with questions.
Bruh. Save yourself. Sometimes if you ask a question she says" That's a good question" or "IDK." I mean how do you not know, you are the teacher you're supposed to know the material. HECK. IT IS YOUR LIFE! The course is very fast. If you still decide to take the class, study every night over the material you learned the day of. Weekly quizzes help.
I dont think people really appreciate everything she does. Yes her class is hard, yes you will not get the "A" you are wanting, but yes she will give you all the study material you can want. Her tests are crazy hard and they will tear you apart. Study notes and just do good on the weekly quizzes as well as the daily clicker quizzes.
If you don't study, this class will be hard for you. But you have to put the time into it and do the work and pay attention. She has clear power points and she always has review sessions before exams. She is always willing to answer questions. She is really approachable and nice. Go to PASS and study and you will be fine. I really liked her!
Ivy is simply one of the worst teachers I've ever encountered. She is smart, but has absolutely no ability to transfer her knowledge to students. She really shouldn't be teacher. She has clicker quizzes every class period, and do not be fooled into thinking they are easy. They aren't. And they will wreck your grade. Study constantly for this class
Was not very helpful this semester.
This was the hardest science class I had ever taken. My class would ask her questions and she would say that is a good question but never answer it. Her tests are tough and are essential to passing. If you stay on top of the tests and daily clicker quizzes you will squeeze by with a decent grade.
Anyone complaining about this class didn't put in the effort. Everything on the test was from the notes. Sure, there's a lot of studying but if you do it, the tests are easy.
She tries to cram four or five major subjects into on test for the sake of time. Currently this upcoming test is over the Skin, Cardiovascular, Respiratory + (C & R system disorders), Nutrition, Digestive system, Urinary system, and Medical Terminology. They're almost over-whelming. I recommend the class, but not her. She's not a good lecturer.
Yes she has her flaws, but she's so sweet and tries to help as much as she can. She's just too smart to be teaching a 100 level class. The concepts are confusing and when she explains it it makes it worse. Start studying for the tests at least 2 weeks in advance. I got an A on the third test because of it, after getting a D on the first 2.
She is terrible at relating her material to her students. If you ask a question you will be more confused than before you asked it. She will cram your test with about 5-8 subjects and grade very heavy and hard on the tests. I went to her office once and she had to Google answers because she didn't know how to answer my simple question.
Nice lady, tries her best to help, and definitely knows her stuff. BUT she is very fast at lecturing , crams a lot of subjects into one test, and straight up tries to trick you with the tests. This class was a lot harder than it needed to be. Honestly, she shouldn't be teaching a 100 level class. You're better off not taking this professor.
Not too hard of a class. She makes it clear what she expects of you. The test are not easy so you really have to study. And there are plenty of opportunities for help and study sessions
She's pretty clear on everything and the class seems easy until you get to the tests. They're much more complex and you really need to study for them, the tests are the only reason for any negative feedback. Her voice can put you to sleep, so sit close and make sure to take notes. Really need to work on tests to get a good grade.
Lectures are extremely boring. All she does is read off of the slide. The tests are extremely confusing. Some "multiple choice" questions, there are multiple right answers and you better select them all or you will get the question wrong. If you decide to pack up early, be prepared to get screamed at. Never opened the textbook. AVOID TAKING HER!!!!
She reads straight off the power point slides and the material is tough to learn on your own. She gives alot of homework that you can make up for the tests, but the tests are so so hard. I ended up with a B- in the class so thank God for all of the homework, but I never did better than a 77% on one of her tests.
She is a decent professor. You need to be in class to pass or else you won't understand the material. Her tests are somewhat hard because there is matching questions and other types like that. If you take her, I highly recommend going to see her for questions you have and attending PASS sessions. Also, expect lots of assignments.
Fitzgerald is either great and you can 100% understand her or you have absolutely no idea what's happening. There is no in between. Luckily the textbook is pretty helpful if you don't get the lectures. She moves quickly, but she always has study sessions outside of class to help you out. You'll either love her or hate her.
Ivy is very smart and does not know how to teach a lower level class because of it. I would not take if you are wanting to get an A. I studied for a week minimum for each test and still ended up with a B+. Her tests are mostly straight from her power points, and there are very specific questions.
Fitzgerald is passionate about what she teaches. It is really helpful to go to the PASS sessions. You've actually got to study for the tests.
I worked hard all throughout her class to get an A or a B, rarely missed any assignments(only accidentally missed one quiz), and still ended in the C range. Tests are very difficult and she purposely tries to trick you into answering wrong. You cannot just memorize vocab and pass the tests, you have to understand and be able to apply it AWFUL FINAL
Dr. Fitzgerald cares about what she is teaching, but she grades really hard when it comes to the participation part of the grade.
She doesn't answer emails. Rushes through power points and does not go into detail about the harder concepts.
Her tests are a bit extreme. You have a lot of information to learn in a short time. Really, I never know how to anticipate whats going to be on the exam. I pretty much go in blind, I have gotten a only C on her exams. She is pretty tough to say the least! Although, she does seem like a nice woman and highly educated.
Super hard teacher, but she cares about what she is teaching. If you are going to take this class keep one thing in mind: its hard, but you can make it if you put in the time and effort. Not going to sugar coat it, shes lectures for days it seems like. A lot of students in the class don't enjoy her weird little comments but shes funny!
very rude
There are a lot of assignments that bump your grade, but the tests are super hard. She tries to trick you on every test with questions having multiple answers. You ask a question in class and all she says is "that's a good question, I'll have to get back to you". There are clicker questions every class period, so make sure you show up. AVOID HER!!
You have to go to lectures to be successful. She gives study resources, and lecture outcomes and tells you what to know for the test, but there is a looooot of information. You have to work for it, but she is a good professor and knows what she is doing. I heard the male professor for BIO 110 is a lot easier though.
DO NOT RECOMMEND IVY. Terrible at helping you when you need it. Lectures are confusing. If you do bad on one test you might as well give up. I received a 79.98% in this class and she absolutely refused to let me make up 2 HUNDREDTHS of a point to help me succeed in the class. Wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.
Ivy Fitzgerald is not the worst professor I've ever had. She has good intentions and is decent at explaining her lectures. BUT, she'll say we'll have to know one thing, and then put other things that she didn't even cover on the exam. I've always be a 4.0 student, but this class sunk my GPA. I've never been so excited to be done with a class.
Ivy's class is not hard. Do what she asks of you with the WileyPlus assignments and blackboard quizzes and you'll be fine. Pay attention in class and read the chapters of the book if you are still struggling.
I loved having Fitzgerald, but I also love science. If you take notes in lecture and look at the slides you'll do well. I have always been successful in school, however, and I know some of my friends struggled if science wasn't their strong point. She's fun and listening to her lectures is entertaining. It was my favorite class, but it isn't easy.
Mostly just reads off power point but does clicker questions that's worth a test grade.
Shes all over the place. GPA is trashed now thanks Fitzgerald!
No textbook and doesn't go over all the criteria that are on tests. Terrible at explaining things. Loves the subject so much that she expects you to know everything she does and love it as much as her.
She goes through material very fast but I have learned so much from her! Phenomenal teacher! Very challenging subject matter but great at her job!
Overall is an extremely hard class but she tells you everything word for word that you need to know for the exams and PLENTY of examples that are very useful. But you must go to class to understand the concepts. No extra credit but if she sees you're trying and putting forth an effort in she is very understandable and great at helping
Dr. Fitzgerald's class is very lecture heavy, with power points to guide. Be sure to actually listen in class; she blatantly points out "this will be on the exam, know this for sure, etc". She is always willing to meet during office hours and is good at explaining concepts you are confused on.
Very tough tests. Graded by tests and quizzes only so no homework buffer which can hurt you. Clicker questions matter so make sure you show up to class. She is good about meeting with you outside of class if you have questions or concerns. No make up homework or late homework accepted.
Very lecture heavy, pay attention to the lectures, show up to class to get points for clicker questions, weekly quizzes and assignments, a lot of material on each test, If you miss one part of the question you miss the whole question. Fast paced class and if you want an A you must dedicate a lot of time outside of class to study.
ivy fitzgerald is a nice person, but her class is just super hard. the quizzes and assignments arent hard at all, but the tests are just wild. study!!!
Ivy is really nice thats why I rated her high, however the tough is extremely hard and is a lot of work. I usually get A's in my classes but I didn't in this class.
Everything that you need to know for the exams are on her PowerPoints. Not everything on the PowerPoints is on the exams though. I study everything which takes a lot of time but I am always well prepared and get good grades on all of her exams. I am not super smart so it does not take a genius to get an A in her class, it just takes your time.
She knows what she is talking about is is so open for questions and extra help. The class itself is pretty hard, but Dr. Fitzgerald is the teacher to take for this class!
She doesnt actually teach, just pulls up a powerpoint slide show and repeats what is on the slide without elaborating on anything. If you dont need this course and dont want to ruin your GPA, dont take it.
The multiple choice tests involve choosing multiple answers for most questions and are the most difficult tests youll ever take. At the end of the year, even if you have perfect attendance and no missing assignments she will not round your 69.97 to a 70. Just reads off of slides during class, doesnt explain. Do not recommend this professor.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. Even going to her office hours didn't help. She has no sympathy for students as at the end of the semester, I had a close friend pass away causing me to miss two quizzes. I explained this to her, and she said, "you should think about other things and not agonize over your grade for BMS 110."
Amazing professor who cares about her students. Points for attendance so don't skip class. Everything you need to know is on the lecture slides which are made available for you to study with.
If you have background of biology and lab techniques, Dr. Fitzgerald's BMS 111 lab is very easy. Each week, you do small lab quizzes and assignments in excel and extended analysis' on the labs. She does not teach much and you need to read the textbook before labs and tests to do well.
Fitzgerald knows that she's talking about and enjoys the material. Throughout the lecture there will be clicker questions, but she walks around answering questions anybody may have. There will be Cengage and BlackBoard quizzes. They should be easy as long as you read the textbook and pay attention in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions!!!
Dr. Fitzgerald is a super nice woman, but her lecture was super hard to follow. BMS is already hard enough (for me at least) and she didn't make it any more understandable. If you have her be prepared to learn at a VERY fast pace. She talks extremely fast and you have to be able to understand the material they day of the lecture.
She truly knows a lot about the subject, so if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. Your clicker will be used in every class. She offers a lot of ideas for studying which is nice. I would recommend taking notes before lecture and add in additional information from the textbook, quizzes, homework, and lecture (maybe additional research too)
Fitgerald is a very nice woman but does not actually teach. She just reads off her slides and does not explain anything. There also is barley any work so you can't apply anything you learn to assignments and use them to help yourself. Her tests are all multiple choice and too hard, especially because she tells you to study the wrong materials. 1/10
LOOOOOOOOTS of participation, uses clickers so if you skip class you WILL lose points. Tests are long af and hard.
Ivy is very nice however this is probably the worst class I have ever taken. The exams are extremely hard, and her teaching style is reading off of slides and telling you what will be on the exam just for the material not to be on the exams. I ended up dropping last minute because my grade was beyond repair.
I was not a fan whatsoever! She would read directly off the slides every single day. The exams covered things that were never discussed in lecture. Her tests are not even comparable to that of other BMS 110 professors. The class averages were always very poor. Don't even ask for extra credit because she will lower your grade if you do.
ivy was an extremely kind and accessible professor. truly, if you come to class and pay attention, you WILL succeed. her grading guidelines are extremely clear, and she will fix mistakes if you notify her. she will directly state in lecture what will and will not be on the exams, and exams are all multiple choice.
Dr. Ivy Fitzgerald is truly a remarkable professor. She genuinely cares about every student of hers. If you attend lecture and take notes, you will succeed. The negative reviews for her are most likely students that did not put in full effort. Dr. Fitzgerald is amazing!
Mind blasting professor
Very contradicting in her teaching, including poorly worded in-class examples that only confuse students. Very large homework load every week that lacks proper instructions. Often rushes material.
I would go to class, try to pay attention, study the study guides that were given to us by her student helpers, and still wouldn't understand the tests, resulting in bad test scores. There were so many questions on the tests that weren't ever discussed. If I can take the BMS111 class and pass, I don't know why her class is so complicated.
For this being an intro class, this was an incredibly difficult course. The material was often rushed through and no one ever felt ready for the tests (that were extremely hard). Little to no preparation even prepared me for what was going to be asked on the test. Avoid at all costs
Nono please
No. Just no. Relies on you reading the slides and expects you to know other material not covered on the slides or in the textbook. And also, if you ask for extra credit or miss a test, she'll dock points off your grade.
She crams so many units into one test and she makes us use clickers for all of our test
This is not the class to take if you don't want to be challenged. She assigns lots of work and it can seem horrible but all the work is super helpful to the learning process. Be ready to see this content at least 5 days a week. Her lectures are engaging and the content is super helpful for any people on the life science track and I learned a lot
