Attendance is a must. Only take ENG 100 w/Bowsher if you can make every class. He teaches strategies to employ in essays. If you "embed" his strategies in your essays, you'll recieve a desireable grade. Use his office hours to let Bowsher know who you are and that you care about your grade.
the most i have ever learn from an english class is his. it's not super easy nor super hard, just put in the time to write the paper and go see him to talk about it. he turns you into a good writer.
Mr. Bowsher is a great teacher. He teaches many strategies for writing the paper and it helped me a lot. Although I'm bad in English, I somehow pulled off an A in his class. You just have to put some time in your work and attendance is a must. If you miss one class, then you better catch up.
Very good teacher who only tries to HELP his students become better writers. He comes off as anal the 1st class but he's nice so dont be scared off and drop the class. He says you need a stapler/binder and all this stuff...all you really need is your book. Show effort, pass easily -learn a lot.
He's a bit intimidating at first because he starts randomly calling on people at the beginning of the semester. Other than that, he's a very good professor who only helps. It's kind of funny how he sometimes gets into character roles. My recommendation is to always go to class because he offers good info and different views that help for papers.
Great teacher, you will learn alot from him. Pay attention because he might put you on the spot if you are not.( he can tell). The most important thing in his class is, " it's his way or the highway."Structure and write your essays the way he tells you too.The topics for the essays are pretty interesting to write about, the books were great to read.
He helped me a lot and actually cares about how well you do in class. He's also easy to talk to if you get along with him.
Brilliant teacher! He really hepled get my writing up to par after the damage done to it by the public school system (high school in particular). He's the best English teacher I ever had and really gets you interested in the subject!
I love Jim Bowsher! What a great teacher! At first I was intimidated, but came to learn that he cares about every student. He walks you through a learning process and you'll find yourself gradually improving. He knows if you even space out for half a second, but you shouldn't because his class is fun. You won't find yourself looking at the clock be
He seems crazy at first, but he is a really great teacher. The strategies he uses really helped me to become a better essay writer. You can't slack off in his class though, so if you sigh up with him you better be able to make it to every class.
Jim Bowsher is one of the nicest teacher in school. He follows up on you, asks you to revise your work without grading it yet, accepts late papers AS LONG AS it is decent for an A, informs you of your improvement, doesn't ask a lot from you but expects you to know what you're doing. His choice of books is fun to read, too. Take him!
Took both 100 & 110 with him. Could be intimidating on the first couple of days and sometimes he contradicts himself, but really helps out if you're stuck or confused. Great with answering questions; interesting picks with material. Cares personally about his students, so he'll work with you around your schedule on assignments if you ask. Take him!
This class is pretty straight-forward. He gave out guidelines for the essays and if you have questions, just ask him. The readings are pretty easy, you just have to read them. And yes, he does catch you spacing out, so pay attention and be prepared with a little something to contribute during discussions.
just go to the tutor he recommends
He scared the crap out of me everytime I went to class. I was intimidated throughout the semester, not just the first few days. He encourages everyone to talk, and if you don't he will pick on you. Better read and do your work before class. He does help you prepare a good persuasive essay though.
Brilliant! Jim Bowsher is by far skyline's best english teacher. He is so helpfull, anyone can get an A in his class. I came into his class without knowing how to write essays, and thankfully he taught me so much, I wouldn't mind talking his class again for fun. If you want to learn english take him!
Skyline's best teacher so far, Jim Bowsher taught me to prepare an argumentative ppr, with both points of view. Good instructions, dirrection, and easy going attitude. He'll give you as much as you put in, give little, get little. I thought I was getting a D or C, got A-. Give plenty of comments on papers turned in, and those that arnt. Great Tea
Great teacher i took him for eng. 100 and 110 and always recommend him
I highly recommend him for ENGL110. I think he is very lenient with grading and if you put work into, you'll get a lot out of the class. I got an A on almost every paper and the class, but I put some work into it.
YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY, ATTENDANCE IS A MUST. READ EVERYTHING AND BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS. HE WILL CALL YOU OUT, SO BE PREPARED TO TALK. DOING ALL ESSAYS IS A MUST. I HAD PROBLEMS WITH FAMILY BUT HE DID NOT CARE, DID NOT GIVE EXTENTIONS. I GUESS ITS MY FAULT THO. IF YOU WANT AN A TALK IN CLASS AND DO ALL ESSAYS.
I took him for Eng 100 and 110, on right after the other. He taught me how to write an essay (something HS teachers can't do). He's a bit aggressive at times and has ridiculously hilarious expressions.
I took Mr. Bowsher for Engl 110. I got an A for his class but I worked very hard to earn it. He is a very good teacher if you work hard with the tutor.
I took Mr. Bowsher for Engl 110. He is a very good teacher if you work hard with the tutor. Go to his class on time, you will get a good grade.
Professor Bowsher is a very very good teacher. I learned so much in his class within one semester compared to all my four years in high school! He is very helpful and he cares a lot for his students. Being in this class not only taught me to write good papers but to also not be afraid to speak up in class. TAKE HIM!!
Easy teacher, WILL help you improve in writing. Although I didn't show up every day I obtained a D. Only thing is if your an international student with minor English writing/speaking HE will NOT be easy on you. He will straight up say "You're doing it wrong." or "I don't know what you're talking about." Be prepared if you want a real teacher.
very nice guy, kind and very helpful. he does give out a good amount of work, but he is also very reasonable when it come to time and very accommodating.
best english teacher. no tests, papers make ur grades. topics arnt difficult to understand. just write the papers and you can get an A. u have to read the book to do that paper but its not really that much compared to other english teachers. night class was fun. he likes ppl who participate
I had Bowsher for Engl 110H... He's a good teacher, but sometimes the assignments are difficult to understand. I got an A in his class. He is very BLUNT, so be prepared. As long as you talk to him after class and ask his help, you'll do fine. I highly recommend him, he will actually teach you how to write a college essay!
After reading these comment saying this teacher is an easy teacher, really! HE'S NOT. Don't take him. He will crush you like a tomato. He's straightforward in an inconsiderable, insulting manner, telling the whole class your failing grade. he is a decent teacher, but he does not give credit for improvement. You have to be perfect. don't take him!
He is horrible at explaining things. And is constantly tell you, you will not pass the class. I have not learned a single thing from him. He is very unorganized. All he cares about is hearing himself talk.
He is one of the best instructors I've taken at Skyline. I highly recommend this class.
This is for the Honors English 100. I am a professional writer, but need my degree so I took this class hoping to get something out of it. He tells me my style isn't "academic" enough, but is unclear in pointing me in the right direction. I'm tempted to drop his class. He's not a bad guy, just a poor 'teach'er.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I wouldn't say easy but very rewarding.
Mr. Bowsher is a great professor. He's funny and answers questions thoroughly. He's not too strict on deadlines but make sure you turn everything on time. There weren't many assignments or essays either. One thing he is focused on is improving your writing and appreciate the art of reading. Overall he's a great teacher, one of the best I've had!
mr.bowsher is a horrible teacher. he assigns homework and explains how to do the homework the day its due. not only that, his descriptions on how to do the work is nearly impossible to read on the white board and explaination is nearly impossible to understand. he was very little help to me whenever i asked for it and just straight up a rude man.
Very nice teacher, definitely knows his stuff. But conveying it the class . . .he's not so great. He talks in circles and he's not direct. I could never get a straight answer from him. Everything seemed so philosophical. Other teachers I spoke to agreed. If you already are a good writer then you should have no problems.
Mr. Bowser is a great professor. I won't say it's an easy course, but it's a really helpful class. Whenever I have questions about the assignment, he always gives helpful answers kindly. There are many works to do from this course, so if you attend classes and pay attention, I believe everyone can do just fine!
Mr. Bowsher is a wonderful teacher! That is, if you wish to learn to read and write better. If you're a slack off, don't take him. He really teaches you how to write better essays and think of them as not so much a burden, but rather a responsibility. Because really, who likes writing essays? I know I don't! But it is quite possible to get an A.
Mr. Bowsher is great! This is not an easy course, but I believe that all the English Writing class are difficult. There are lots of work to do for sure, but at the same time, it's helpful and fun. Once you are willing to attend class, discuss questions with professor, and read the novel, it is possible to get A. So, take his class for sure!
Mr.Bowsher is an Awesome teacher! He taught me soo much about writing and also about critical thinking. He can be tough when it comes to grading, but you shouldn't get a bad grade if you actually listen to his lessons. I hope to get him again another semester. Also, he can be very understanding when it comes to turning in a paper late.
Mr. Bowsher is not an easy teacher! Slackers should not take his class. If you're not a slacker, like myself, then you will enjoy his class. It is very possible to get an A. He is very understanding when something comes up and you have to turn in a paper late, just dont make it a habit. Be sure to read because there are passage tests.
Do NOT take this professor. Although he may seem easier because he accepts late papers, his grading is very picky. Unless it's not what he wants, you won't get a good grade. He picks on people and is very unfair. Not to mention that he will and can humiliate you in front of the class. I repeat, do NOT take him. It's for your own good.
He is one of the best English teacher that I ever have. You would learn a lot with him. He is very understanding when you have any problem with you learning. He appreciate student effort in class. Excellent teacher.
Very good Professor
He's a good teacher. We had to read a few short stories & a novel (The Tortilla Curtain). Minimum HW (a few journal-entry type things, also short Qs about the assigned readings) + 3 essays + 2 quizzes on readings + in-class essay final. He grades fairly. He's very understanding & accommodating & wants to help students succeed. I would recommend him
I learned more than I expected. I took 4 years of English honors/AP classes in highschool. If you have taken honors courses prior, you will perform well in this class. I found it easy; Aced every essay. While his class is not a 5 on the easiness scale for the majority of the class, I'm ranking it that high because I encourage others to take him.
he's the best English professor I've taken in Skyline College. he's very smart, helpful and witty! he's not an easy A though but if you attend his class regularly, read the required texts and ask his help you'll pass. I've learned so much from him and our class discussions!Awesome teacher!
Extremely meticulous grader. Always looking for something specific as far as essays. Will call out students who don't do the readings prior to class. Has no qualms with embarrassing someone. 4 Essays. 2 In class (Midterm and final). I do not recommend his class especially at night.
Prof. Bowsher is not an easy teacher. His explanations of things don't always match up with his guidelines and he's not very clear. He has his own writing style and its demonstrated in his grading of your work. Before his class, I really enjoyed English and I still do. He just wasn't the teacher for me.
Hardest English teacher I have taken yet! He expects a lot out of your essays but he does go through thoroughly of what is expected of your essays; so go to class and take notes! Also he does give you a good amount of time inbetween essay assignments so try not to procrastinate. It would of been an easy class if I used my time well and organized.
WARNING: He's the worst you can take for ENGL. He does not clarify what he wants on any of his Essays. I took him last semester with an Honors mix, and over 85% of the class had to revise every single essay including Honors students. I love english, but whenever he makes you write rough drafts, he doesn't ever give you the feedback. STAY FAR AWAY!!
Horrible teaching methods, couldn't understand what he wanted on his essays. He didn't return our essays nor did he give us feedback on the rough drafts that was turned in. He's never clear on what he wants on the assignments, made us buy examination books and said we would be doing a lot of writing but never collected or given credit. So good luck
I really enjoyed this class, the instruction was clear and helpful. Not exactly an easy class but I attended and turned in assignments as best I could and my grade certainly reflected my efforts. He will call you out if you space, Be ready to speak your mind and participate
Took his night class last semester for honors. Went by pretty quick, and he lets you out early! Vague prompts for the essays, so ask him to explain until you understand because he's a harsh grader. Missed a lot of class but somehow earned an A. If you do miss class, always visit office hours! He wants to help. Not a class for procrastinators.
he is a very funny man. he knows what he is teaching. you should take him if u want to learn how to write essays. he is strict grader but i think its worth the effort you put in the class. i like him even though i didn get good grades. but i am happy i learned to write
-He Doesn't Know What He Want -Gives Harsh Grades -Funny Professor -Allows only two rewrite
Mr. Bowsher is a strict but wonderful professor. It's not an easy class to be in but he provides helpful feedback on which areas you need to work on.
I had him in ENG 846 and ENG 100. Bowsher is an amazing teacher. He chooses interesting books with life changing messages. He teaches you how to write clearly and effectively. I have seen a drastic change in my writing. Since his class, I've received a few scholarships which required essay submissions. The quality of this class is excellent.
I took Mr. Bowsher's class for a full year, Eng 846 & Eng 100. He's a wonderful teacher. He takes his time answering questions. The more effort you put in, the easier his class will get.
Prompts are meant to be vague in this course. As you go into higher levels of Eng the teacher will give you more freedom to write on your own interpretation of the prompt. Previous courses have a prompt more narrow therefore making it easier and more direct to answer. I got an A and had to go to his office hours a lot to verify my outlines.
Class is very simple. Come to class & you'll pass. Pay attention because he says exactly what he's looking for. He'll talk for most of the class and loves to pick on people. He'll give constructive criticism if you're wrong. Use office hours! He won't fail you as long as you TRY. Don't be lazy. Easy class.
The thing is that he wants to see effort. Even if your essays are horrible, go to tutoring or get help from him and he'll then at least grade a little easier, I think. He really cares about his students, which is why I liked him. He can be messy but not horribly. He can also seem unapproachable but he's actually a very nice guy. Talk to him!!
Prof Bowsher may seem very scary and unapprochable, however if he knows youre trying and coming to class, he'll pass you! I would say my essays were medioacre and I got a B in English 100. And an A in English 846 with him. Take him, go to class, and do your essays and reading!
He can seem tough but his a good teacher you do about 4 essays if he feels like the class isn't ready he will give more time to work on essays and can be a tad hard grader on essays, make you fix them for grade later on, he doesn't like if your absent a lot, books are boring except for 1,not a lot of hw essays and workbook,
He definitely has helped me improved with my writing and my study skills. His class is difficult for me that I thought of dropping it in mid-semester. ALWAYS ASK HIM QUESTIONS AND GET ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GET i.e. get tutoring (even if you don't think you need it), go to his office hours (he's nicer when you talk to him privately) Good Luck!
He's a funny guy and he is an alright teacher. He's very confusing about what he wants and is not afraid to embarrass you. He really makes you work for your grade; which is very good. However, I would not recommend him. There are plenty of easier teachers you can learn the same stuff from.
If you're looking for an easy A, don't take Bowsher. He's hilarious and very willing to help; you can tell that he really cares about his students which is what mostly matters. If English isn't your strongest subject, he can be a very tough grader. However, he'll give you many chances to improve your grade. Take him if you like English
Professor Bowsher is an amazing english teacher. Although his class is difficult you will gain much out of it. He pushes his students to reach out of their comfort zone with critical thinking and in their writing only because he cares much for their education and future. VERY VERY helpful if you see him outside class. I would highly recommend him.
Worst English I've ever had. Bowsher was unbelievably unclear with lessons, homework, and due dates. Nobody ever knew what he was trying to say or get us to learn. He makes you pointlessly re-do so many essays but will ace some kid that literally stated in his paper that "I haven't seen the movie or read Cinderella but.."
At the beginning of the semester, I thought he was crazy.. After a few lectures on success, education, and life, I came to realize he was really passionate about school and helping his students be successful. He does group activities that are strange, but he'll Miyagi you... If you're lazy, do NOT take this class. All the work is worth it. Trust me
Mr. Bowsher is there for you! Taking this class you will have to read a lot, go to class or else you won't pass, participate, and write a lot of essays! He is always there to help you but he can be unclear sometimes when he is explaining what he wants in the essays .Other than that I recommend taking this class!
Do not lag on doing your essays. Must read assigned reading to understand what's going on in class. Do not procrastinate in any English classes!
If you're someone that actually wants to make the effort to improve their writing take Jim Bowsher, he is great! He will take you through every step and stop you where you need help specifically. Yes he makes you read a small portion of a few books, get over it! This is college, you will face far worse at any university.
Professor Bowsher simply is a great professor. English isn't my strongest subject and I continuously strive for improvement and his class delivers it. Not only did my writing noticably improve when taking his class, I learned new writing styles that is incredibly useful when trying to explain obtained evidence. Anyone can pass with hard work.
I took Mr. Bowsher at C.O.M for a summer course and he was really amazing. He is also a tough grader and really makes you work for your grade but he shows that he wants you to improve and really strives to be there for you (which is rare from my exp). He was a great teacher and if you really try hard and work you won't be disappointed.
He very helpful when I needed help with my essays. There were only three to four essays in the class. He is funny and nice and can help with anything just asked,
he is all over the place. grade your hw really late then gives it to you end of the sememester. doesnt tell you your grade unless you schedule with him. he grades very hard so you need to prepare yourself for that. goodluck
Be aware. Confusing teacher keeps changing his essay prompts of what he wants. Then he said it wrong but he asked for it. You just need to be there all the time and work hard for the grade
If you prefer organized professors with clear expectations don't take Bowsher. He will pick on you but the class is bearable and not too difficult. He's actually really helpful when you schedule time with him during his office hours.
He is a great professor. Very helpful and caring during office hours. Wants to help you pass but you must put in the work itself.
Mr. Bowsher is a great professor, he will help you in any way he can so you can pass, but you must reach out and show him that you're working hard. lectures can be boring sometimes but his sense of humor makes up for it. He will not give you an easy grade, but you will learn so much from him. took him for Eng 100 and 110. no regrets! TAKE HIM!
Bowsher is a very great English teacher. You need to do your work and show up for class, but he makes the class funny. He will give so much guidance and he will make sure you succeed! DO your reading and prepare for quizzes. He is only a hard grader if you do not normally do your work and you slack off. I would def take him again if I could!
All over the place, not clear, and change assignments all the time. He lost all the classroom Essay, and we had to send it again. I asked for my First draft back several times, and never got it back, B gave me a final grade out of the first draft. After we argue in front of the whole class, he finally gave me "extra time" to work on it.
Took this professor one of my first semesters at Skyline and he was by far the worst English teacher I ever had. He graded papers based on how much his views aligned with the students and not by their actual writing skill or understanding of the material.
