Notes fairly disorganized; paces constantly. Generally very helpful, offers time outside of class- but will talk forever. Practically does all interpreting for you. Is young; first (I assume) and only class. Read beforehand and show up: you can't go wrong.
I think D. Baird is an excellent professor. His notes are clear and relevant to the material. I feel that he really cares about his students and will make sure that they understand the material. He has certainly inspired my interest in poetry. He's also very hot.
Well i guess being a young pro there id a lot of weight on your shoulders to do the right thing. but i still think this prof marks hard and doesnt actully tell you what exactly what you need to do to make things better.. i would never recommend this prod to any. his boring
Really newage and fun, relates alot of the material to cool tv shows and great songs. Looks a lotttt like Seth from the OC and dresses close to the same. Hes superrrrr hot and will make your friends wish they were in his class:P
This prof. is very easy, clear instructions on telling what he wants from students. Will also take time outside of class to help his students if help was needed. A last comment but not least, What A HOT Prof. he is!!
I think we were his first ever class. Nevertheless, he do make english fun, but is an extremely hard maker (kiss your A good-bye)!! Pretty funny though because he can't write straight on the board...writes from corner to corner.
Totally wicked prof. Any teacher that can give you an essay comparing black sabbath and bob dylan should be rewarded!!! gives wicked notes, and uses good analogys. marks hard is his only fault..dont expect the marks you got in high school! also...hes terribly hot! definately reccomend him!
Baird cares alot for his students and I respect that. he is extremely hot and very down to earth. His biggest fault is that he marks really hard and its really hard to get a good mark with him.

Mr. Baird is an awesome prof. He likes to challenge his students. He is totally hot..I would recommend him to anyone interested in this course. I don't think he marks too hard either!
Awesome Prof. Makes the class as interesting as he can. He is concerned about how his students are doing. He's a total hottie which helps! I would pick him as a prof again.
Really great teacher, Best english teacher Ive had yet! ANd very easy on the eyes!!
Excellent teacher! I would totally pick him again. Very down to earth and very easy on the eyes. All in all, a fun guy.
He hasn't showed up earlier than 15 min after class has started and i personally think that is a huge waste of my money and time. He is extreamly rushed when he does his teaching and doesn't always clearly answer your questions. He needs a haircut too. I'm sure he'd be awesome if he showed up on time and gave us some advance notice of due dates.
He is an awesome prof, his testing is very fair, he is always willing to help, and I am totally enjoying his class. You gotta admit he's HOT!
He's not that good at all... he don't explain what he wants done, just gives you a piece of paper and figure it out yourself. Hard Marker. Just reads over stories and poems, don't teach nothing about devices used in english.

Dave seems like a very well rounded individual. Hes a great prof if you listen to him, take notes, and if you are still confused after that. Go talk to him. Hes a good prof! Take this course with him for sure.
confusing. He likes Plato's Republic way too much.....does anybody else think he looks like Adam Brody from The OC??
Baird was a decent prof. Notes are good, albeit somewhat confusing at times. My only complaint is that the course was taught much more like a philosophy course than an english course. Reading list was interesting. His reading tests were random and often unrelated to the important aspects of the novels. Highest mark in my class of 30+ students: 76
Not that great, I thought he was somewhat entertaining for the first few weeks, but then he turned into a ****. Marks rediculous hard, like all other english teachers (still don't understand that) and wasn't that clear on stuff he wanted done. If you're stuck with him, then it could be worse. Rob Davidson = WAY better!!
A very intelligent person but a terrible prof. He expects students to know and be able to rehearse everything that he has previously learned in school. If you get him, try and get a different prof. There are much better profs who are much more understanding and less demanding of first year students.
This prof is probably the best prof i have this semester!. He marks hard, but he is really smart and has enjoyable classes!. English is one of the only classes that i hate to miss because of this prof. If you have the opportunity, GET HIM
i'm enjoying these ratings from his 1080 class because he must be easy, however in 1110 he was horrible to everyone. the highest mark in the class was mid 70s and he went a little off course by throwing in plato. seriously, find someone else because he is horribly hard to please
Prof. Baird is totally hot. He's also an excellent teacher. He's really helpful. I didn't think he was unfair or all that difficult. I think the people that don't like his teaching probably didn't do so well, and not because of him. DEFINITELY take his course. He rocks!
enjoy him in 1080, because in 1101 he will rip your work to shreds and give the lowest marks he possibly can. he also gives these absurd 1%tests to see how you are progessing in the novels. he is sarcastic, and man candy but still find someone else---or i suggest 1110
He tries to make the classes and the material as interesting as possible. Knows his stuff, and can be very helpful if you ask. The most important information regarding the material comes from his lectures. Write down everything he says, it helps with essay writing. Overall, a really great prof!
Awesome prof! He is so hot and so nice. I loved 1080, he made it so interesting. He teaches the material great and is a fair marker. I'd DEFINITELY take another class with him!
He was a very fair marker but did not give much feedback on essays. He gave an easy 10% for attendance and content quizzes. So you could easily boost your mark. Baird is easy-going and always encouraged his students to seek his advice before handing in essays. Definitely a great teacher.
if you get him you must go to class, I missed 3 weeks becuase I was super sick, and he never got over it he always stared me down when I walked in. He is a hard marker, and gives content quizzes, he is quite laid back and the girls I know keep raving about how hot he is, I don't think he is a bad teacher, you just have to go to class.
Seriously--run! He has unrealistic expectations towards a mandatory course. It is not everyone's world and it never will be. He needs to realize that it is a 1000 level course not a seminar! Seriously--run!
David Baird is one heck of a prof. He has the ability to help any student understand any piece of writing thrown at him. For marking, I feel he is fair, he seems to like simplicity in people's work instead of rambling. Attendance will help you, but that's a given for any course. And If you dig general sarcasm, get this guy. He's a riot.
Nice guy and tries to make THE most boring material interesting with sarcasm...but horrible marker with ridiculous expectations for a first year course, willing to give help but reiterates what was said in class. 2% quizzes were excellent...good guy but not a great prof
No Comments
Im assuming that the people who say he isnt fair are the people who dont try hard or put any effort into their work. He's super approachable and always willing to help. He's a great prof and I plan on trying to get him again and again whenever possible.
He is a HOT and is fairly funny, I will give him that, but he marks incredibly HARD and tries to stare you down to answer questions that no one knows the answers to! Plus he says "what the H*ll Does that mean?" Like 15 times in one class! It?s annoying! He?s ok but I don?t recommend him if you are looking for a good grade!
He is helpful, and creates a liaison between first year students and great literature that is usually non-existant. Profs like him make it easier for us to adjust from highschool to university. I recommend him to anyone who has any interest in improving their writing ability!
Super cute and really relates to his students! He's really young and doesn't seem like the prof type! He makes class entertaining for his students, and shares his love of great music. He had us write a paper on comparing the sex pistols with the beatles. I've even seen him downtown at local shows haha. A hard marker at first but slacks off later!
David Baird is a comical, easy going guy and made this course really interesting for his students. He genuinely cares that you do well and always offered to help with your papers before passing them in. I worked really hard in the course, but enjoyed it more than any other English course I've taken. Definitely take a course with Baird, he rocks!
AWSOME!!!
HOT! He is a hard marker and doesn't always make his expectations clear but he is extremely helpful one on one.
he relates to the students in his class. mostly because he could be one of us. excellent at letting us know what he wants us to give him in essays. every class with him has been full. which is an odd occurance in english courses. I look forward to seeing how he marks papers. Other than that I think he is very knowledgable and has a lot to share.
Great prof. Found him magnetic. I'm actually upset that I will no longer be taught by him. He choices awesome material and enjoyed the material I contributed as well. All in all he was a pleasure to have as a teacher.
Super easy teacher. Really glad I picked him. The work is easy and even half interesting. First time I've ever gotten over a 75 in an English course.
Great prof, loved his class, and I really do not like English usually...
Baird is an excellent prof if you choose to pay attention. If you miss class he doesn't seem to mind as long as you're doing well in the course. He is a difficult marker but he is always available to help with work.
He's a fair marker, but has no interest in the class. He never teaches, he just gives us a documentary to watch and then gives an assignment on it. He is very understanding about giving extensions on assignments if you need them. As long as you do the work, you'll get a good grade.
Many of those who take this course are in it to learn better writing skills to be used in their later university years. Unfortunately Baird does little to improve your writing. The course is easy but you learn nothing.
great prof very entertaining, enjoys teaching english bit, out of it sometimes! :P
Great prof. , When he teaches he makes it easy to understand what he wants you to get from this course! Would take him for all my courses if possible. Great Prof, Great Mark!
Good Prof, enjoyed his class. Would register for his class again.
Very nice prof but extremely hard marker, quizzes were quite picky also.
I had Baird for English 1080. He was always late for class, at least 10-15 minutes and ALWAYS had an excuse, instead of just telling everyone he was late. He had office hours for exams and students were waiting at his office and he never showed. We ended up only doing half of the assignments we were suppose to. He was very picky.
Consistently late for class, was on time perhaps once a month. Terribly slow at correcting, final marks were due over a week ago and the ones for his classes (He only has two) have yet to be posted. He asked our class to go to his office one day to pick up our essays. After he showed up 45 minutes late, he told us he had not started correcting any.
Absolutely the most tardy professor I have ever encountered in my life. He was consistently late for class, late handing back assignments, and late for scheduled meetings. His lack of organization and respect for his students is unbelievable. Avoid at all costs.
English 1110 (what was supposed to be pretty tough) turned out to be a joke. Class was cancelled a few times and as a result I went for weeks without having to do anything. He seems to be a pretty tough marker that's the only thing I would watch out for. Other than that his classes are enjoyable.
He is always late, he gives you this giant list of assignments to do at the beginning of the semester, talks about how we are going to do them, and then we don't until the last week. Want a mark back? You need to go to his office, wait for an hour and then he corrects it in front of you when he told you he would have it done a week prior. Avoid.
I really did not like this prof. He cancelled class at least every third class, was extremley late with passing things back and made up lies and excuses of why he didnt have them to give back, and marks fairly hard. He uses profane language ALOT in class and makes you uncomfortable.told my class we were an insult to people who fought in the war.
Had him for Eng1080. Was crap as a teacher, didn't explain things well. Was frequently late, and cancelled a lot of classes. He was however willing to go over your papers with you! And when dealing with him one on one, he's great. I would, however, not recommend him as a prof. This prof just doesn't care.
David Baird was a interesting prof that did make class more enjoyable. However he was a fan of missing classes. He was a decent marker and overall i would take his class again
Makes class easier to go to but is a rambler and a mumbler. If you need help he's available but he does not respond to e-mails.
Sarcastic at times when the class does not complete the bare minimum of the homework assigned I am taking him again next semester overall great guy and hes also kinda hot :P Does like to cancel class a procrastinate giving marks but is fair and grades easy so waiting is worth it.
Write down everything he says, you will be tested on things he mentions even once in passing, not kidding. Attend all classes, dates for tests will change and you will not be notified. He is a funny guy but he makes simple things seem complicated when explaining in class, and asks arbitrary questions on tests to make sure you showed up for class.
Baird is a funny guy. However, his lectures are difficult to follow and are very unclear. He also changes test dates without any warning. I wouldn't recommend him.
Trciky quizes, ANYTHING he says may be on them. Decent essay marker!! but he put off the final essay until the last week then sent out an email at 12:30am two nights before it was due saying 'assignement canceled'. Late a couple times and unexpectedly canceled classes. Seemed kind of snappy if you didnt know the answer at times
He's a really nice person to get along with. I had him both semesters and I was happy with the way he did things besides the quizzes. They were kinda useless and barely no one passed. All in all though, his class was fun to go to and he's got a great sense of humour.
I found he was like a student himself, moreso on the level of everyone in the room. He was passionate about his work. He would sometimes derail but it made the class all that more interesting. His midterms were essays but his quizzes were unfair: requiring exact word quotes from a text book. (1110). All in all, I really enjoyed his classes.
I found Professor Baird sometimes made lectures more interesting, but had a tendency to ramble which got a little old by the end of the semester. A little bit of a tough marker when it comes to essays. Honestly seems a little arrogant. Unreliable when it comes to correcting assignments on timepunctuality. Would probably avoid him in the future.
This lecture made my tuesday and thursday evenings. He is very knowledgable and presents information in a way that is relatable and quite comical. It was evident that he really cared about his students as he spent a great deal of time grading papers in detail and taking time out of class to teach grammar. 3 in class, 1 take home, 1 final. Easy.
I'm not an English person. I love math too much, so that probably didn't help in my rating scheme, but in general, the teacher was nice and helpful. If you're good at writing essays, it's probably a great course for you. I managed to pull an 'A' with his notes and help.
Very fair, funny and laid-back
very unclear as to what he wants you to write in your essay. you think you've got it, then get your essay back and you got a 60. if you're not good at essay writing, get ready for him to judge you based upon your essay writing. long boring lectures, avoid.
I found this professor disorganized, not very clear when it came to assignments and tests.. he also takes roughly 2-4 days to respond to emails. There was also no D2L for this course when I did it, which made things even more difficult. On the bright side he has a good sense of humour
Doesn't give a mark above a 70.
Overall, great guy and great prof. He is a fairly tough marker, but if you put in any effort whatsoever, you'll be fine. Attending lectures isn't a must. He gives good feedback on papers, and will help you out if you ask. I would recommend, and would take another one of his classes.
Disorganized, not helpful. Will give nothing above 70.
He's really interested in what he teaches. He may take time to correct the papers but at the end of the day, he gives you a great feedback. One of the best things is that he was always there to help students. Has a good sense of humour. Most importantly, NEVER skip classes, because 1) they are very interesting and 2) they're essential to pass.
This prof chastised us for not being comfortable to speak in his class which definitely did not make anyone more interested in participating. He spoke too quietly with a drawling monotone that was often incomprehensible and very sleep-inducing. He wasted lecture time chastising us and never attempted to approach the discussions in a different way.
Didn't hear anything over a 70 given out in my class. Gives good feedback on essays but pretty much picks a grade for you at the beginning of the year and it sticks. Very slow in grading and responding to emails. On the bright side he is funny, but also very full of himself.
Didn't talk to one person who got over a 68 on any essay we did this semester. Very full of himself, takes way to long to hand back papers and to respond to emails. He bases all your essays off the first one you did and won't give you more then 5 percent over your original mark.
Baird is an adequate prof. He is a hard marker and it takes him a long time to grade your essay and assignments. But he is hilarious and tries to make lectures interesting.
D. Baird is an adequate prof. He is funny, but his lectures are not helpful, he takes forever to grade and pass back assignments (like a month). He is very full of himself. Papers/Essay topics are sucky and he is a tough grader. He does not explain anything and gives no notes. Would not recommend!!
He's extremely condescending to students and likes to call them out in class. He was a mess when It came to due dates, everything was extended but he'd annouce the night before the original due date. Would not recommend.
This prof is very funny and I really enjoy going to his classes. He gives very helpful notes and prepares you for the essay questions that he will be providing. He is a bit of a tough marker but if you put effort into your work you will do good. Highly recommend!
I really enjoy his lectures, as he is very funny and makes them interesting. The lectures are really beneficial, so I recommend attending as often as possible. Also, take advantage of his office hours if you need the extra help. He is very helpful and accommodating. He is slightly unorganized, but who doesn't appreciate a seldom date change?
Really accommodating if you miss an exam or have any questions outside of class time. Also had some really interesting papers and made what he was looking for in terms of grading very clear. Overall really enjoyed his class
David is one of the best Professors I have ever had. His lectures are amazing and so so helpful. He is very interesting and has a great sense of humour. The material he uses is also very interesting and he is a fair grader. Attend his lectures, listen well, take notes, and you will do great. He's also beautiful, trust me you'll want to go to class
The best english prof i've had at MUN! Explains exactly what he wants for assignments and gives lots of heads up for what he is expecting on exams. Super cool guy and really funny!
Typical pretentious English professor. If you've taken one English class you've taken them all. Thinks he's better than everyone else, refuses to give anything above a 70 and basically pulls marks out of thin air. Ridiculous.
Expected way too much from students when his notes and readings were no help at all. Very tough grader and provides little feedback on essays. Would not take again.
Acted like a 1000 course was a 4000. Gave out 0's like they were nothing. No useful feedback. All contact on D2L or online was professional and pleasant but in person it was a totally different case. His expectations for assignments appeared to be clear when doing them but when the essays were graded (if they were) he wanted something different.
solid choice if you are just trying to pass language. He can make some pretty decent jokes but the lectures are pretty boring.
I dont think ive ever felt so miserably about a course. David designed this course to suit himself and no one else. He forces you to do his topics which share no benefit to anything outside of the textbook. His marking is really down putting and makes me feel so worthless and stupid. If I had my time back i would drop the course and do another one
Prof Baird is a terrific English professor. He gives really in-depth explanations of the texts. He provides you with all of the tools you need to succeed in his class and encourages you to use them. He takes the course seriously and always has a well-prepared and interesting lecture. He has a subtle sense of humor and is pleasant to listen to.
Prof Baird made this course more entertaining than I anticipated! I'm a science student and his style of teaching worked best with my style of learning. It's an english course so, of course, you should expect to read, put in the work, and try to be prepared. His lectures are interesting and informative. He is a fair lecturer and grader :)
I think he cares more than you would expect. If you want to succeed and you put in the effort, he will accommodate to help you succeed. He won't screw you over if you don't slack.
He takes way too long to correct essays just got one back the day before the second one is due doesn't answer emails/messages very well takes a long time to get back to you
Prof. Baird really enjoys literature, he goes into great detail about the books or stories you do in class. He read 90% of the books with us made sure we understood theme, conflict, setting etc. Gave very detailed clear notes that were helpful when we had to do assignments or exams. He gave good feedback on writing assignments so you could improve.
Prof. Baird is a great professor with a witty sense of humour. He is very clear in what he expects from each paper. If you follow the rules/guidelines he outlines in class and on D2L, you'll do fine. He gives useful feedback on papers. I really feel like Prof. Baird made me a better writer. Wish I could take another class with him!
He is a tough grader o the essays. be aware that he bases your grade for the rest of the semester on your first paper. He provides you with the textbook, thus don't need to buy on. You will need to use the witing Help Center to get a high grade. and make sure to go visit him to ask him about your paper before handing it in.
I had to take this course twice. Traumatic the first time. This time is was fantastic. He is a hard grader but he gave me that mark I worked for in the end. He told me to feel better when I had to hand in an essay late because of illness. He is the first prof to actually teach me MLA formatting. If you genuinely like reading, you'll love him.
When u go to classy sit there and he talks all class. If I dont wanna go to class u dont have to because he tells you what ur doing on that day. But would go to class because he gives u ideas to write about and if u write about the things he likes then u will do good. Very hard grader unfair almost. Books he picks are hard to get into
Not very approachable, a bit of a know it all. The content of the course was as you would expect, fair grader. Lectures were patronizing as he treated students as less than himself and took a whole class to ridicule the class's grammar skills rather than do his job and help students.
I have enjoyed taking this course with Dr. Baird. His step by step instructions for each/module week in addition to reading material has helped me a lot. He sets the expectations very clearly and gives amazing feedback on each essay.
Prof. Baird is terrible. He grades very hard, and even with his feedback, it is tough to fix your mistakes because it is unclear how to go about it. It takes months for essays to be handed back. He can be reached semi-easily when he is online. He offers no guidance and expects you to write like an expert. Would never recommend him.
AVOID HIM AT ANY COST. HE IS TERRIBLE AND SUPER RUDE.
David is really nice prof and he picks very interesting short stories to read. The only downside is that he's a tough grader so you have to be really good in English to get an A or B. I'm pretty decent in English and never got higher than a 70 in his class.
Overall he's a really nice guy and he gives really good feedback on essays. Only thing is that he takes quite a while to give them back which isn't the end of the world. A bit of a tough grader but if you follow his instructions you will easily do well.
When I started the year with him I felt he was unfair and unapproachable. But I later realized that if you are willing to show up, follow instructions, and just ask him for help, you can do very well. He is kind, gives clear instructions, and is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he does. I definitely learned valuable skills for writing.
He was fairly easy on grading, and provided great feedback. Had no midterm or final exam, only one essay outline and 4 essays, 2 in class and 2 take home. Attendance was not mandatory but he provides more info on testing in class that he doesn't include in his brightspace posts that makes the essays easier.
He is a great professor! Initially, I thought he is going to be a rude and hard grader but surprisingly he actually is quite the opposite! The course instructions are crystal clear and you just have to follow them accordingly. I found this course really easy to pass and if I had put in a little effort, I could have easily scored an A.
professor Baird wasnt terrible. Instructions were clear and he was very responsive to emails and did everything he could to help. He came off as bit rude at times but it seemed to have just been his personality. He is a tougher grader but if you follow his instructions you'll do fine
Professor Baird is a pretty standard English Prof. More or less what you'd expect. Read some books, read some short stories etc... One warning though is the horrendous quiz's he had for the books you were reading. They dropped my grade by quite a bit and they were very specific covering very minute and completely useless info. But, also nice guy.
Great prof. Would recommend going to his lectures as he explains almost everything about novel/short stories. No exams just a few essays throughout the course. Great selection of books btw.
The worst prof so far in my time at MUN. His expectations are way too high, and if you make a simple mistake, he will cut a lot of marks. He isn't clear on what he wants from his students. VERY VERY TOUGH grader. Avoid him if possible. My friend did the same course with a different prof and got 89 with minimum effort.
Good professor but tough garder
Professor Baird had us write 4 essays, 3 in-class and 1 take-home. He was very clear with what he expected and engaged with the class as much as possible. Make sure you actually go to class and take notes or you might not get the grade you want. He has a sarcastic humour I enjoyed a lot.
Worst professor I've had at MUN. Expectations are extremely high, small mistakes cost many marks, and instructions are unclear. Very tough grader. Avoid if possible.
This man is on an insane ego trip and for an introductory course about English taught literally nothing, and only wanted you to parrot his own opinion back to him. His only ‘help' is telling you to go to other students in the writing centre, who scoffed repeatedly at the things he wanted me to change. I did well and he was no help.
