he tends to mumble, class was easy enough overall, only 4 papers and some revisions. He always... ALWAYS wants more detail in papers. tends to be late to class, but not quite 15 min. Willing to help individually on papers.
easy teacher. never got less than an A on any paper. boring class but tends to end class early.
Boring, Does always want more detail.... He can be mean to students he doesn't like. If he likes you, you will get a good grade. Seems passive agressive
He does tend to mumble a little in class, but he is really an awesome teacher one on one. He is willing to help you out if you have any questions or need and clarification on what he wants you to write. I thought he was very reasonable and always took time for me when I needed some help.
Run, run as fast as you can. Horrible, don't get on his bad side. Nice and easy for the students he likes but for the rest of us, good luck. You can never have enough detail on his papers.
A good professor. I never heard him mumble. A very fair grader. I learned a lot from him. He respects you if you do the work, but if you're lazy or don't want to learn to write better, run.
He mumbles. Sometimes it seems he gives girls better grades. The quizzes are easy. All you have to do is read and then write some stuff down for a paper and the essay tests. Wasn't really a hard class.
Excellent professor. You have to do the work though. He doesn't play favorites. The only people I know who complained about his class hadn't kept up with the reading.
Horrible writing, you cannot read anything he writes. It takes him forever to get papers graded. He does not show up for classes consistently, this can be bad when your class is at 8 am, or you live off campus. He gives very unclear directions.
He was very unclear on the assignments. I felt I didnt learn anything from taking this class. The only good thing is that he gives you extra time to write your papers if you need it and you dont have to show up to class and can still make a B.
I took Mr. Johnson, in the Fall '05. I think he is a very fair teacher. He usually tries to tell jokes to break the ice. I think he is a good professor. He is late with returning the papers back, but he also gives time to revise a paper for a better grade. I think he is a good professor and I think the students should give him a break.
Overall, I did well in this class and learned a lot. Only issue- I wish he would have taken more control over a "2nd teacher" we had in class.
his classes are like never-ending and he talks to himself a lot! i did not learn anything from him but the class is easy! all u have to do is show up and turn in stuff if he says so...only 3 major papers to write for the whole semester, last one was our final! if u love english, don't take him, he'll make you hate it!
I took him last year for 2110 and thought he was excellent. Demanding when it comes to papers, but he's funny. But what I liked most were the readings and his lectures. A few people who didn't do the readings didn't like him, and failed the course. I guess they decided to post here.
He is awesome. Great sense of humor. Entertaining and knowledgeable on the subject although english sucks. He'll allow you to redo everything so as long as you make an effort he'll be there to help. Cool dude and pretty fun class for english.
A lot of people seemed to dislike the course, but despite the fast summer pace it was not that bad. I had 3 other courses and a full time job, and was able to make a high B. If you do all the readings, listen in class, and take advantage of his help with papers (and the Writing Lab), you should do well.
Knows the material but cannot teach it very well. I did ALL of the reading and I still found almost everything that he said or we talked about unhelpful. He rambles and is incredibly unclear as to what assignments are. The Class is soooooo BORING, it is almost impossible for me to stay the entire time. I have learned literally nothing. DONT TAKE HI
Do not take his class if you do not HAVE to!! He is very unorganized. Never really took attendance. Do not buy all the books for his class. There are 2 formal papers, 1 informal, and a research paper. You have to read a bunch of short stories and write a full paper on them. Annoying. HE never actually reads anything , only counts lengthorword count
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you are not a strong writer I recommend that you take someone else because you will struggle in his class.
His class was very boring. He mumbles so it is impossible to really get anything out of the lecture unless you listen very closely which is really nessesary. As long as you do the reading assignments and use common sense you'll be fine. However, there is a lot of reading, but that should be expected for a literature class.
Everyone before me is right, but allow me to make things plain and simple for you all: If English is your strong point, you can take him and do better than fine. If not: RUN FOR THE FRICKIN' HILLS!!!! I didn't work very hard, I just communicated with him and did the assignments, and I got an A. But English is MY best subject, so.... =)
Worst teacher I have encountered. He is boring and nothing he talks about relates to what you actually need for the class. In fact if you just read what he asks that is all that you need. If attendance wasn't mandatory there would be no need to go to class. Luckily I am strong in English but if you are not stay as far from this teacher as possible
This is not an easy class. World Lit. is not my strongest interest so this class was a challenge. The teacher knows his material and is helpful. His quizzes are easy. The exams are lengthy essays so just know the questions asked and spend time with it. I made a B and might have made an A if I did not rush through the research paper(6-8pg)Good prof.
Worst English professor ever! So Boring! He expects all 5-7 page papers to be wrote on the most boring topics. He knit-picks your paper to death and it's very frustrating! I am a good writer, always made A's in English and i am struggling. Put it this way, 10 people were left in my class after drop/add week.
Worse professor ever. His papers have to be wrote on stories read in book, or a film he chooses. He rambles on about the dumbest things and thinks he is funny.Avoid his class if u can
If you get on his good side, you're golden. He tries to take a light-hearted approach to the course, but has poor comedic timing, if you will. If you get to know him on a personal basis, and actually come to class once in a while, you'll enjoy the course. Though the writing is boring, do what he says, ask questions, and it's an A.
Ok just to be fair, whatever English writing teacher you get would never be a comedian. He is like a bedtime story teller in the beginning, but you will find him really kind if you go to his classes. Papers are long but srsly if you do free writing forever what are you gonna learn?! Fair teacher, patient, and helpful. just boring.
I was the only student this semester to attend every single class. More than half of the students dropped the class. I carried classroom discussion the whole semester and worked diligently on the papers. He is incredibly dull but I never fell asleep in class. I still got a B. Hes a biased grader; I couldnt please him whatever I tried. Not worth it.
To be fair, he's a very nice man. He seems helpful if you ask. But, I didn't like his class that much. He's very vague about subjects, and he requires class discussion on papers. Also, he's a very picky grader. Do NOT take this class if you're a procrastinator. Trust me.
He's such a nice guy and he really tries to be helpful to all his students. However, he's always a bit vague when it comes to assignments and his expectations. So, if you take his class, ask a lot of questions and let him read your rough drafts.
He tends to mumble when he's addressing the class, and is so very vague when giving assignments. The only thing we really did in class apart from days where we peer reviewed was talk about the same things each class about the paper until it was due. He's not a bad guy, but the class is so boring. I couldn't pay attention most days.
He is a very nice man. He talks a lot about random thoughts.Class is pointless, bu it is mandatory. He grades very hard on essays even if you go to the English lab. for the first essay 90% of the class got c's. Something good I can say is he lets us rewrite the readings for our reaction papers (automatic 100%)
Nice guy. While he is very helpful, don't expect to hear back from him right away. He rambles a lot, but if you ask questions he is more than willing to answer. Very dull classroom experience though, and is very particular with grading which makes it hard to get anything close to an A. If you're going to take him, don't take a night class.
Very difficult class. He has a tendency to mumble and is a very difficult grader. I was given an opportunity to rewrite 2 different papers. went to the writing lab as well as other people in the English dept. Corrected EVERYTHING he wrote down as wrong and received exactly the same grade a C. He pretty much gives every student a C.
I really enjoyed this class? More than half of the people dropped pretty quickly but I liked him, he uses really weird metaphors that I found amusing and is more than willing to look over your drafts, he encourages everyone to email him whatever they've got. You discuss every paper in class and the reading, so ne prepared for that; I loved it.
VERY difficult class. I'm a 4.0 student and, as this is a gen ed course usually taken by freshmen, I was completely taken aback by how hard he grades the papers. Unless you're an incredible writer and you don't mind listening to off-topic stories mumbled between assignments, I suggest you take this course with a different professor.
He knows what he is talking about and passionate about what he teaches. Class can be a bit boring at times and mundane. But when you have group workshops don't miss class because you will learn a lot about improving your writing! Show up and do your work, he respects that and will work with you to improve your writing skills!
I prefered to not read which (while not fatal to my grade) was a shot in the foot. Thankfully I'm a strong writer, but I would suggest against his course. He's garbage at teaching in my opinion and he assigns at least 5 pages a session, upwards of over a hundred.
Even if you are usually one of the good students who always does their work you will have difficulty reading. He grades ridiculously hard. It is difficult to understand what he is talking about, and he does mumble all the time. One of my least favorite teachers I have ever had.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. AVOID. Lectures have nothing to do with reading material; he gets on really weird tangents. Reading quizzes are very specific even if you read the works. Too many papers are required for this class compared to other World Lit classes at KSU. I usually enjoy English classes and can't stand his class!
Dr. Johnson has a very monotone voice, and it is easy to fall asleep during his lectures. He isn't a terrible teacher, but you have to read a lot, and in class he doesn't do a very good job at going over the reading we had to do. We will read on our own and then come into class to hear a lecture on something completely different.
Professor Johnson is an extremely sloooow and boooring speaker. However, he does have a dry sense of humor that very few people in the class seem to get or care about. If you can be patient, he isn't an awful teacher. He can grade hard, but I made all A's and B's on my essays. Midterm and final essays, one 8-10 page research paper, and 3 quizzes.
If you are one of those people who cannot pay attention to monotone professors, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Johnson is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had and the way he grades his papers is ridiculous! He gives no clarification and you have to be a writing master in order to pass. Avoid this class at all costs!
Loves world literature for sure. His quizzes killed my grade but he's a pretty easy grader on papers.
Most boring class i've taken so far. He has the most monotonous monotone voice ever. Your whole grade is pretty much 3 essays. He gives you topics to pick from, but that's just about it. No further guidance really. English has always been my strong suit (A's in previous classes, 4 on AP test in high school) but I got a C on every paper. AVOID HIM!
Solid class, for me. Liked the way the course was structured--built the final research paper over time.
Dr. Johnson is not very good at conveying what he expects from the students in their research papers. The "lectures" he does give do not really help, and he will spend 15 minutes explaining the simplest concepts (like the word "lunar"). You are not allowed to pick your own topics for the research paper and the assigned topic is not interesting.
He's not clear at all about how you're supposed to write your essay. You pick your own topic, but if he doesn't like it then he's a very harsh grader. His lectures are long and pointless because he goes off into rambling and he has a very monotonous voice. I would only recommend him if you like sleeping in class.
Way to difficult for any average student, only take if writing major. What he expects in student's papers and what is written on the assignment sheets completely contradict each other, making it difficult to know what to write. Boring teacher, just talks about how he has a hard on for Joan Didion. DO NOT TAKE.
As someone who loved English throughout high school and took both AP Lang and AP Lit, I can honestly say that this man killed my love for English. He grades super hard, to the point that everyone in my class and his other class all received C's on the first essay. He's unhelpful, super difficult to understand, and unbelievably boring.
The worst teacher you could ever take. This is coming from somebody who loves to write and this is not writing. He shoots down all creativity. If it is not his specific way there is no way. Do not think you can try to please him. I highly recommend you wait to take english another semester if you are deciding not taking him. Help yourself out.
Dr. Johnson is probably the worst professor I've had so far. He is very difficult to understand and most of the time he just went off monologuing about how great of a writer Joan Didion was. I always did very well on essays in high school and ENGL 1101 but never made more than a C on his papers. Easily the harshest grader I've ever had.
Take his topic recommendations seriously. Pick one of them and stick with it. He wants you to structure every sentence. Look at each paragraph as an essay in itself and make sure it can stand on its own. DO NOT "fluff" your paper. 3-4 quotes 3 supporting sentences each and make sure they make a point! take quizzes seriously because essays are hard
Not bad at all. We had 4 essays and 3 quizzes. Quizzes are easy if you briefly study what it is on and he's not an easy grader on essays, but he's not particularly a tough grader either.
Just don't take the class. Save yourself money from getting a D or an F from having to take this again. Grades completely unfairly. His lectures are not AT ALL relevant to the assignments/quizzes/exams. Just don't do it. An easy F.
Worst English prof. out there. Wasn't helpful, assigned long, meaningless papers, talked about things that weren't relevant, etc. Overall horrible. Don't expect anything higher than C.
He is very lecture heavy and requires attendance. The class I was in was very small (13 people at most) and he got to know us all very well so our classes were very connected. He was available when needed for help and was a tough grader, but explained very well why he graded how he did to help receive better grades on future papers he assigned.
He is incredibly boring. His lectures only cover things on the quizzes and are no help for writing the essays. He requires papers to be 5-8 pages but he doesn't read the whole thing. Keep up with the reading. I had had his class once a week and every time I showed up it was a waste of time because I learned nothing.
Look, English 1102 is mandatory. But do yourself a favor and don't choose Prof. Johnson. He assigns a ton of reading and doesn't help the class analyze or understand the text. Instead, he rambles about topics that aren't relevant in the slightest. Nobody knows what's going on and it's difficult to get clarification. This class is just... confusing.
Dr. Johnson is the most boring and critical professor. You write 3 papers, one being your final, and take 4 quizzes. All of his essay prompts and quiz questions are extremely difficult and he grades even harder. Only two people in my class got above a C and no one got an A. Overall, would never recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. EXTREMLY tough grader and 3 essays take up 80% of the grade. Class is a waste of time. Ex) he spent all class talking about the word dialect. All class! Essay subjects are extremely hard to write about and he gives little to no help. Most people fail this class. I got a 97% in English 1101 and I couldnt manage to get an A
Worst teacher I have ever had! Graded my essay (worth 30% of my grade) the last day to drop the class. There were no other real graded. Most people failed the essay but he screwed me an I cant drop the class. He will ruin your GPA. do not take!!!!!!!
Professor Johnson is one of the most boring people to listen to... ever. Very monotonous and speaks about things that are not at all relevant to his course. We spent an entire class period speaking about the word "form." He isn't as tough as a grader as some make him out to be, but his class is not an easy A. He is willing to meet w/ you though.
Prof Johnson is a really nice guy and the class itself isn't very difficult, but he's a pretty tough grader on the essays. You NEED to study for quizzes because they can save you if your essays aren't great. Johnson is just super scatterbrained and rambles the whole class, but like I said, nice guy. He also leaves helpful feedback on essays.
I am usually an A/B student, but this is the most frustrating and difficult class I have taken because of Professor Johnson. You have 3 papers that he grades very strictly with little explanation. He does not teach anything in class and expects you to write like an expert. If you have more than 3 absences, you drop a whole letter grade.
Just dont take him you will fail
Prompts are way to broad and he doesnt give us enough on the prompt to write the 1700-2500 word papers. His quizs are very poorly made and always resulted in a high majority of the class failing them. He shows the results after and even after the whole class and him see the horrible results, he does nothing to change his teaching or tests. 1/10
His course schedule is a mess, consistently forgetting to include mandatory assignments, such as discussion posts, to prove attendance. Your only hope to achieve an A on the reading quizzes is to read all of his assigned readings 2, maybe 3 times over. 80% of the class grade is based on 3 essays. 3 absences will reduce your grade by a letter.
HE DOESN'T GIVE A DANG ABOUT STUDENTS. I PAID FOR CAMPUS FEE FOR A WHOLE SEMESTER AND WE ONLY WENT 3 TIMES THE WHOLE TIME. HIS SYLLABUS IS CONFUSING AND I WOULDN'T WASTE MY TIME WITH HIM. PLEASE DON'T MAKE A MISTAKE OF TAKING THIS CLASS CZ I REGRET HORRIBLY AND HAD TO WITHDRAW. PLEASE HEAR ME OUT.
do not take this class, really tough grader and makes me feel incredibly dumb. I never understand what he wants from me ever and I don't understand how one could can get an A in this class without spending your life to it.
As a journalism major I know how to write, but he made me feel dumb the entire semester. A super nice. and understanding guy but super tough at grading. Taking during Covid probably made it worse, with inability to meet and discuss papers further. Just don't take, I'm saving your grade!
John isn't organized at all. My class had 40+ people and ended with 7. He doesn't assignments in D2L you have to keep up with them in his long, pointless announcements. Attendance is a hot mess. Takes days to email back. No extra credit. Grades tough and unclear. Doesn't teach just unclear confusing handouts you figure out by yourself. Kinda rude
I took Dr. Johnson's class online, and I'm very glad I did because I'm sure his class is harder in person. I recommend reading what's assigned because he gives quizzes based off the readings and they're good grade boosters. We only wrote three papers in the course. He is a strict grader, but he gives good feedback on each paper.
Only gives three papers throughout the semester, each of them requiring 1750 words. He also only gave a week or two to complete the essay, as we didn't recieve all the necessary content. Very difficult grader. Will take off points for anything he can. The class started with about 40 students. By the end of the semester, 7 were left.
Do NOT take this professor. he is an extremely hard grader and the topics that he provides for the essays are some of the most useless and uninteresting topics on the planet. only 3 essays that take up 75% of your grade. Just rambles during class, but attendance is mandatory. Don't make the same mistake as me. Avoid him.
Dr. Johnson is a great teacher if you are majoring in English, his knowledge of the writing process in general will make you an exceptional writer. However, he is a tough grader, so much so that I got a 75 on my first essay and a few weeks later I got a 95 on an essay of similar length and quality for another class. I liked his lectures though.
Professor gave everyone the same feedback on their papers, eventhough the papers were all vastly different. He would also give quizzes over the readings that he assigned every single night. The quizzes are over very minute details within the readings. 3x 1750 word papers, and 4x quizzes for the semester over the multiple readings.
Save yourself the trouble and do not take this professor. Your grade is dropped by a letter if you miss 3 classes. 75% of your overall grade comprises 3 1,750-word essays, with boring topics. He assigns very uninteresting readings every night and every other week or so gives a quiz over small details, with the class averages being about 50%.
he is an extremly tough grader, but he wants you to improve. If you take him, literally ask him for help as much as you can.
Extremely condescending and spent most of the class doing nothing. Office hours were only 30 minutes, once a week, so.. The quizzes are simple enough if you do the readings, some questions are extremely specific. The challenge are the essays, very tough grader with minimal direction. just like don't.. class average was like 50% or something.
Professor Johnson is a well-intentioned but unhelpful professor. Grades consist of 4 quizzes on reading done outside of class, and three 1750 word essays. There are no rubrics for each essay, students are given a 25-word assignment page for each He is extremely vague when explaining what he is looking for and is a tough grader on unclear criteria.
Probably every English class have the same requirements but the 3 huge essays were just so hard to go straight into under a week with absolutely no preparation because most of class I genuinely has no idea what he was even talking about. The first month I was very interactive then slowly just started sleeping and then I skipped. He was nice though
really tough grader on essays. Before submitting each essay, I reviewed it with the writing center and fixed all the errors, and even than I got 70's and 75's. Talks very vaguely about topics. His quizzes contain awfully specific questions, to the point where even if you read the text multiple times, you could not get a satisfactory grade.
Worse professor ever do not take him
Just do the work and go to class and you will do fine. Please prepare for the quizzes because they do help in the long run. Also take all of your essays serious, He gives plenty of time for you to complete them. He is also caring as long as he sees you trying and care about your grade.
