Our class size was about 300 and he did a very good job of accomindating everyone. The TA's had office hours, as did he, and there were help sessions planned. Homework matched the test pretty well, tests obviously a little harder.

Good guy, very helpful went over homework problems in class, dropped lowest test grade if you missed fewer than 3 classes, tests a little difficult but the review tests were very similar.
He's a good teacher and a very understanding guy. Tests are kind of hard, but miss less than 3 classes and he'll drop lowest test and quiz grade.
He's a great teach, he teaches at a nice pace, he doesn't try to crunch material in before a test, he takes time to answer any questions you have. Test are pretty easy.
He is a very nice guy who happens to be a great teacher. He shows many thorough examples in class and answers your questions. Good teacher to get if you need one for ma 121. Overall nice/good teacher.
good guy, makes the class easy. explains everything in detail without confusing you.
He's a nice guy. I didn't really like the attendance policy, but I guess it's better now that I went to most of the classes.
He gives lots of examples and the material he goes over in class is what appears on the test.
Great instructor. He's thorough and won't move on until everyone understands the material. So, if you're unsure of something, ask. He's willing to give a curve if the situation warrants it. I highly recommend him.

I got an A on the first test :)
Best math teacher I've ever had...Highly recommend him
He is an amazing math teacher... Calculus is not an easy class but he was the best math teacher I have ever had.
Great guy! Awesome class, I highly reccomend taking it if you are interested in sports and need a math credit. The work wasn't bad and the class was usually pretty fun. I really enjoyed this class!
Great Teacher!!!
Really nice teacher, funny, tries to make everything easy to understand. Helpful and answers a lot of webassign ?s. Fair grader
really good teacher. if you have to take calculus, I would be sure to get him!
AWESOME teacher. Keeps class interesting and answers any questions about webassign in class by just doing the problem for you. Tests are exactly what you cover in class with no surprises. HIGHLY recommended!
One of the best math teachers I have ever had! Take any class you can with him!
Really, REALLY good teacher! It has been about 5 years since I've taken my last math, and he was able to make a lot clear to me that other teachers had not been able to in the past. Take him if you get the chance!!!!
He is an amazing teacher!
I really enjoyed having him as a teacher! He makes the material easy to understand and gives practice test that are very close to the actual test. If you have the chance, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very good teacher -- interesting and funny! Very helpful and thorough when instructing. Gives practice tests before tests that are pretty much the exact same format with different numbers in their place. Great guy, I highly reccommend him.
Nice teacher, somewhat arrogant. Likes to make fun of some people in the class. Went into the final exam with a high A+ and somehow got a B, no idea how that happened but I still recommend this teacher since he is very helpful and approachable.
Really good teacher. Content of his classes can be really challenging if you're not great at math, so make sure you STUDY everything he teaches. The ONE thing you don't understand and skip over while studying will be on the test, it happens every time. But he's a great teacher.
He's a really good teacher, I hate math and had never taken a calculus before and he made me understand it pretty clearly. I ended up getting a B in the class. If you're not good in math and have to take a calculus, take him!
Always extends homework, always willing to help; very understanding; occasionally funny jokes.
Excellent professor! Actually learned calculus and enjoyed it. Study his practice tests and you will ace the real tests, it is a replica of the problems on the test. He is nice, helpful, and funny; take the class!
Griggs is one of the better math teachers I have had. Not too hard and understands the students. I would definitely recommend.
Griggs is such a great teacher! He really wants the students to understand and breaks all the material down perfectly. Tests aren't bad at all.
Hands down, the BEST professor ever. Great man; always willing to help. Understanding, funny, and always explain difficult material well. I took MA141 & MA241 and I TAed MA121 for him. He is able to teach to those who hate math and those who love it. He is very funny, and he loves to help outside of the classroom. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Griggs is an amazing professor. His teaching method is super-clear and always relevant to the reading assignments. He is extremely open to helping students during office hours or via email and he took the time to know every one of us by name (120+ students). He also brought doughnuts for everyone during the final. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Professor Griggs is awesome! He really cares about the students and wants you to learn the material - he is easy to understand and is really helpful! I would recommend looking at sample problems in the book to reinforce what he teaches in class, and you'll be fine!
Great Professor. Always engaged and his style of teaching will keep you engaged. If you must take this class take him, but register early. He is such a good professor that his class fills up fast. Study hard, befriend the TA's and let him know who you are, and You'll get out of there with at least a B.
Great professor! He obviously loves what he's doing and he engages his students well. Also, he sounds a bit like Kermit.
He is a very easy going guy. He is very funny in class which makes it easier to pay attention. There are 4 or 5 tests and he gives you old tests to study. The only homework is web-assigns which he gives you in advance so there is plenty of time to complete them. DEFINITELY take his class.
Great professor!
He is an awesome teacher! His class is very easy. The only homework you have are webassigns and you have multiple tries. Test aren't very hard (as long as you do the old ones he provides) and he is easy to understand. Definitely take this class! I haven't opened my text book once.
VERY easy class, explains content thoroughly. Only homework is 10 webassigns throughout the semester. Look at the practice tests on his website, they are exactly the same as the tests he will give you but with different numbers. Highly reccomended!!
Dr. Griggs is an AMAZING professor! He is really funny and laid back. He makes calculus easy to understand, and he is, hands down, the best math teacher I've ever had. His tests aren't that hard if you do the practice tests and all of the webassigns. He gives you tons of resources to help you do your best, just don't buy the book; we didn't use it.
He is a funny guy and pretty cool outside of class. But he's head of the math department and forgot he was teaching a lower level math class. It's pretty hard, and he went through the material quickly. Never used the book.
One of the best teachers in the math department hands down. He gives lots of examples and the webassigns are similar to what is on the tests. He also posts old tests to practice with.
Awesome teacher! Uses plenty of examples to explain concepts. Has lots of resources to help you and is really chill
Best teacher I've had so far at NCSU. I made a better grade in calc 2 than in calc 1 because of this guy. The teacher truly can make all the difference in the world. Though it's tough material, he makes it easy to understand and actually has some fun along the way as well. Highly recommend taking Griggs if you can get him!
Best professor in the math department, but not easy nor hard.
Awesome teacher! Makes calculus easy and understandle. Very nice and easy going.
I hated calculus before Griggs. He is wonderful! I learned everything so easily. He really works miracles.
Class was easy, take it. he explains everything in lots of detail.
I wish he taught every class at NCSU. I took this class with another professor and failed it. I retook it with Griggs and passed with an A. I hated calc but I actually understand it and its pretty cool and easy now to me. Take it with him. You wont regret it.
Took AP Calculus in high school, but I think I still would have made an A+ even if I had no prior experience with calc. Griggs is funny and great at explaining how to do problems. Has practice tests from previous semesters which are helpful for studying. Have to do some Webassign homework-pretty easy=grade booster. Study with a partner-it helped me
GREAT teacher! Funny guy and good at explaining. Makes the hour and fifteen minute classes enjoyable considering its calculus. I recommend taking it with him!
Griggs is one of those professors you just can't help but enjoy. He is so easy going and likes to make people laugh. The class can be tough, but he does try and help the students and answers questions. I highly recommend him.
Great professor.
Best teacher ever. I have hated math all of my life but Griggs made it so clear and straight forward. He never tries to trick you on tests and he even provides previous tests from the semester before. Hes a funny and great guy!
One of the best teachers I've had.
SO easy! Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you have less than 3 absences, you can drop the lowest test, quiz and homework grade. Tests are also very, very easy. Griggs is funny, as well. GREAT professor!
Just in case you needed one more reason to take Mr. Griggs class, he's a great guy! This was the second Calculus class I have taken at State, the first was with Dr. Lada. Mr. Griggs is far and away a better teacher. His explanations are clear and his tests follow the practice webassign tests he posts to the letter. You won't regret taking him.
Dr. Griggs does everything he can to give you an A in this class. You know almost EXACTLY what will be on his tests and the final and you have a ton of submissions on the web assign HW. He makes sarcastic jokes throughout class and his stories will take up the first 10 minutes of class a lot. I would definitely recommend him for MA 121. Very easy.
I took this class online, and I can say that watching his lectures was painless. He explained every topic very clearly, and he does a fantastic job getting to every topic that you need to know for the test. I HIGHLY recommend taking Dr. Griggs for MA 241, at least. The practice tests help a lot, and he can guarantee you a great grade!!
Recommend him highly. Explains things well. Tests are fair. Get the book third version from amazon for < $5. It was helpful.
Dont take it with him. Justin is much better.
Great Professor. He use to be a high school teacher so he knows how to run a classroom and communicate clearly. Grading criteria is clear, test are fair, and grading is fair. He breaks up the monotony of calc 2 with a few jokes. Overall, one of the best professors to take ma241 with at nc state
He actually wants his students to exceed!
I was skeptical about taking an online calculus 2 course but I went through with the online course and so far I have an A average! His lectures are very helpful and the practice tests are very similar to the actual tests. Watch and take notes on all the lectures, take notes on the textbook, and do the practice tests and you should get the A.
Explains the material well and gives access to practice tests beforehand that are exactly like the real test. Does not always stick to the syllabus, so don't rely on it to see what you missed.
He is straight forward, and clear. I never had to ask questions and if you just watch the lectures and do the assignment , you can easily get a C+ If you actually put in effort and do practice problems then his class is a sure A. His final is a combination of the materials from past 4 exams. And he replaces lowest with final grade.
Dr. Griggs is a great professor, this is coming from someone with no prior Calculus experience. The class was difficult for me, but it was simply because of the material. Dr. Griggs really tries to help his students out. He even drops the lowest test grade given you have under three absences! For the first time I feel like I truly understand math.
Dr. Griggs was wonderful. He truly wants to help his students learn and is also quite funny. I went into this class with no prior Calculus experience and still did great. The practice tests Dr. Griggs posts online are very similar to the test so I definitely suggest taking a look at those. I would take Dr. Griggs' class again in a heartbeat.
Really great professor. Straight forward and clear. Tests are difficult but are doable if you put in the time to study.
He is great at explaining concepts and teaches you exactly what you need to know on the tests--there are never any surprises. He posts practice tests that are very similar to the real tests that you will take.
He is hands down my favorite math professor ever. He is hilarious and makes the class as simple as as possible without throwing any curve balls. If you have to take MA 121 and you don't take it with J. Griggs you are doing yourself a huge disservice.
The best math professor in the university probably. If you attend lectures and pay attention, you will understand every thing probably. The tests are all similar to the ones in previous years and the final has the same questions as the tests during the semester.
I took the Tue/Thu lectures and it was really fast past. Take mon/wed/fri instead. Their exams are shorter/easier and lectures are a lot smoother. Textbook? You don't need it. Just pay attention to the notes. No penalty on excess absences, but if you miss less than 3, final exam grade replaces lowest test grade. There are homework and quiz grades.
Griggs is like a grandpa. He tells horrible jokes, but you laugh anyways. Make an effort to get to know him. It. Will. Help. I didn't have to study too hard for his tests but definitely review the practice problems in the textbook (he wrote it). He explains everything clearly and is available outside of class. Definitely one of my favorite profs
A great teacher who clearly understands the material he's teaching.
Griggs is a super awesome professor. He's very respectful of his students and treats them as adults. He wrote the textbook, so he obviously knows his stuff. His lectures are easily understandable, and he's always helpful during office hours. Honestly, he made Calculus II, the hardest of the calculus series, seem like a breeze.
Pretty fast paced, especially for class of 250. Ended up teaching myself the material. He does provide lots of resources - class notes, past tests, and videos of old lectures. 3 (out of 15) lowest hw grades and lowest test grade get dropped if you miss less than 3 classes
His lectures are hard to follow and I guess he expected that you know it or seen it before which wasn't the case for most of us . His exams almost look like the practice exams that he gives on webassign so that's good to study off of. Please get a tutor you'll need one don't wait around . If you miss less then 3 classes final replaces worst grade.
Dr. Griggs is a great professor. His online lectures were very clear and very easy to understand. In addition, he made them interesting. Sometimes he can go on a slight tangent, but it is a nice break and the stories are usually relevant. Having already taken Calc2 with a different professor, Dr. Griggs was many, many times better.
He is a great guy and managed to keep me awake and passing a 6pm calc class
Great teacher to take for any class. His lectures are clear, and easy to understand if you can read his hand-writing. Anybody with a solid work ethic can pass this class, so don't worry.
He went through the material very quickly but overall was a good teacher. You were graded on attendance, homework, and tests. Previous tests were released online and were VERY helpful to study. Griggs is a great guy and was very interactive. Make sure you pick an isle seat because its very small and you have assigned seats.
Hated math before taking this class, and ended up kind of enjoying it. I did lots of practice problems from the textbook and went to tutoring a lot and that was extremely helpful. The tests are based on the previous ones that he puts online, so definitely look at those.
Dr. Griggs makes you have a test proctor for every test. I took this class virtually and had no way to get a proctor. I was forced to make my dad miss work in order to proctor tests because of Dr. Griggs' rigid "Must Have a Proctor" policy. Class NIGHTMARE. Also, his WebAssign problems were impossible and he RARELY responds to emails.
