Insko has a real passion for literature and brings up many interesting subjects during class discussion. I would highly recommend him.
He is a terrible professor! If you like frequent pop quizes and take tests on nothing you have read for the class, then he is AWESOME!!! NOT!!!!! Lets you out late everyday AND gives you more than average reading assignments. HELLO WE HAVE OTHER CLASSES!!
Professor Insko gets really into the discussions in class. He also, however, likes giving pop quizzes and having the class read tons of novels. Make sure to attend class, the things discussed inclass are on the test.
Insko is a great professor. It is obvious that he loves literature and he knows what he is talking about. I would recommend him to anyone.
Insko- Good class , Expect about 5-7 pop-quizes; usually on Thursdays. The books are more depressing than boring ie The Awakening but can be very boring ie Moby Dick (He is a big Moby Dick fan. If you like to read you will ace his class.
Insko is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had at Oakland. He loves what he is doing and it rubs off on the class. He is hard if you don't do the work, but if you keep up, your good. He's not only way, way smart but he's hot too!!
He knows his stuff. Pop quizzes but as long as you read and attend class you'll do good. It's a lot of reading but he's understanding and he'll adjust the syllabus. I recommend him!!!! I've already told other people to take him!!!!
Quite possibly the best professor I've ever had. He grades tests and quizzes kinda tough but participation offsets it. He makes it very easy to participate and that will help your grade.
Overrated teacher, grades hard, bides time with class discussion, 25% of grade on participation but doesnt't take attendence or write down names, calls on cute girls by name.
Best professor at Oakland. His passion for literature is very contagious and he makes you want to read. Tests and quizzes are very easy if you read. Most kids complain that he is too hard, but they're just lazy. Take the class if you want to be inspired.
Says he is willing to help, went in for help, wrote a practice essay for him, he never checked it and gave me a horrible grade. Only helps the people who talk in class, what if u are shy? THEN U FAIL!
Good teacher.Read SparkNotes or Cliff Notes if you can't handle the books.Pay attention because the final is all review from discussions in class.Start up class discussions to waste time.Don't be scared to speak up or at least be ready to be called on.
Not a bad prof. He dwells way too long on certain discussions at times and digresses a lot, but he's a really fun guy and the class i took was quite easy, as long as you did the reading.
Very good professor. I learned quite a bit in this class, and am really thankful. He does drag on sometimes but it isn't a big deal. If you do your work, you'll do fine. Nothing he asks of you is out of reach. Good Class.
I love him!!! He makes the class very captivating and holds your attention very good. He is super witty and funny which adds to our class discussion. I am taking a course with him next semester because I enjoy his class so much. PLus, he's hot and always wears cute outfits.
I wouldn't consider him the most encouraging teacher. He is a difficult grader and he takes forever to return assignments.
This guy thinks he's the****. Gives off the wall assignments and forgets that we're students and actually have other classes. Thinks he is teaching graduate courses when he's not. If you're planning on taking him bc he is hot, he is hot, but steer clear, he knows it - in a kinda creepy sleazy way.
This professor was one of the best I've ever had. He taught me how to experience literature as a whole and gave us lots of freedom with our writing assignments. He did assign a 400 level paper which was very difficult, but worth it in the long run. Workload is heavy, but make sure to participate.
Energetic guy, but seems to play favorites with some students. I hate that so much of your grade depends on talking in class - it's unfair to me, like you're being punished. Didn't learn a whole lot that I didn't already know. Challenging papers that were a struggle to churn out at times.
I really learned a lot from this professor. He knows so much, and he's really into what he teaches. The class is difficult, but definitely do-able and fun. You would really enjoy a class with this professor. This was definitely one of the best classes I have ever taken at OU.
People should realize that English is COMMUNICATION and this requires participation. Also, Insko really knows his area and it is shameful that instead of talking about his intellect or teaching style many comment on his general "creepiness" or how he looks. You are in college people!
His classes are difficult, expectations are high, and he is, by far, the best professor I've encountered at OU . Super nice guy, always available for outside help and only 'favors' people who are intelligent, engaged, and truly want to be there.
This is the second class I've taken with this proffessor and I would definately recommend him to others. The work load is heavy and challenging but well worth it! He is extremely passionate about teaching and those who step up will only benifit from what he has to offer. The class environment is very friendly, open, and fun!
much loved cause he is easy. he is disorganized, vague, confused as well as confusing.
SO NOT HOTT!..metal mouth. def good dresser; nice. is not biased to cute girls as someone said previously. Do the readings, attend class, quizes a/b every other wk. essay & fill in blank exams. get started on moby dick and weiland EARLY on. classs not 2boring, & DONT cheat he watches u. Dont leave early either, will say something to u. never mean
i don't like his methods one bit!!
great professor in every facet
first off, his looks mean absolutely nothing to your academic career, so there's no point in mentioning them... He's a wonderful professor who actually cares about students learning. No, this is NOT and easy A, but it definately is possible to get one - it's called DO THE WORK and PAY ATTENTION... wow, who wouldv'e thought. I learned alot in class
Aww dont call him metal mouth, hes cute! And yes that has nothing to do with your academics. Insko is so Passionate about literature, excited, enthusiastic, completely LOVED this class and hes an AMAZING professor who truly cares about helping students understand. Tells you exactly whats on Exams,no papers and hes so funny!Going to miss this class
Wonderful Professor. He actually makes reading fun and he's very passionate about the subject he teach, unlike many professors at Oakland.
By far the BEST english professor at OU. This is the second class I've had with him and loved every minute of it! He LOVES to teach and it shows. Take his classes if you want to experience what real love of literature is all about!
He is such a fun teacher! He gets very excited about teaching english. You may see him jump up and down! There is a lot of reading, pop quizzes, and the midterm is pretty hard. If you PARTICIPATE and you show him that you really want to be there you will do great in the class.
this teacher knows his stuff, he knows how to teach his stuff, and if you read the stuff and show up at class you know way more than you thought you'd ever know about literature. take a class with Insko if you can
Amazing professor. He truly cares about his studies and your interests in them. He always takes the time to make sure you understand the material that you are assigned to read, bringing in supplemental materials and such. This was the second time (hopefully of three) that i took him because i enjoyed his class so much. Take insko! youll love him!
Got a 3.5 in the class. Books can be slow, difficult reads. His discussion makes them more interesting, but sometimes it seems as if we're reading too much into things. Will follow the syllabus in order but not to the day. Keep up with the reading, for there are pop quizzes. Will expect a quiz on Billy Budd but will get Huck Finn. Exams are easy.
Class is very easy. Reading cliff notes is sufficient, currently have a 3.8 by only reading them. Class can get very boring however. The discussions can just drag on for hours. And it would be nice if he let us out before 9:50 at least once. But he is a very nice guy and a good teacher. Definatley take this for ENG gen. ed. requirement.
First of all, he's adorable - I could come to class every day just to see him! The class can get boring, but he definitely knows his stuff. Occasional quizzes which aren't too bad as long as you read. There are 3 exams, not too bad as long as you, like I said, do the reading. I'd recommend taking this as your gen ed!
What a great guy! I just started this class, but I love him. He is so personable and is always willling to listen. If u have a problem, just talk to him about it; he is so understanding. Class is going to be difficult, but it should be. My only problem is that I have a hard time concentrating in class cuz he's just so cute.
One of the best
He was very passionate about the subject! Class discussions were very interesting. He is really cute, so it was not hard for me to go to class :). Attendance is mandatory, but he made the class interesting so it was not hard to attend. Quizzes/Exams were fairly easy if you read the class material and paid attention in class.
Not a hard class if you go every time. Try not to miss because he covers everything that you need to know for the tests in class. I had no interest in English before the class but he made it very enjoyable. Get the required books because they help when he is reviewing.
Insko is the MAN. Very engaging prof, EXACTLY what an English prof should be. One of the best prof's I've ever had at OU (and I've taken a lot of good ones, having used RMP to set up my shedule for the last 3 years.) Go to class, you don't HAVE to read the books but it helps and makes the class much more fun (and yes it IS a fun class)
dont bother reading the books as long as you go to class. HE covers everything you need to know in the discussions. The discussions seem to drag on for hours, which made the class very boring. My other problem is that he never let us out early, always had to stay until 9:50. But he is a nice guy and cares about the student doing well.
Prof Insko is funny, enthusiastic, and knows a lot. He is always available to help. He does always run over 2-5 minutes, though, which is a little annoying. He also has a propensity to overanalyze everything. Overall, though, a very good teacher.
He is very passionate about what he is teaching and that makes the class interesting. If you always attend you won't have to read because he goes over everything that you need to know in lectures. Reading will make the lectures go by faster and a lot more fun. If you can take this class with this prof. do it, you won't regret it!!!
I took his American Literature class and he really taught it extremely well. One thing that may frustrate you is that all of class is based on discussion so if you like a teacher who just tells your the answers then don't take him because he will never do that. But overall he is an amazing teacher, who is very fair, and wants you to do well!
This is a great class! He gets the whole class involved in discussing the material that was read. He is very passionate about the subject, and it's contagious!! He appreciates everyone's interpretation of what we're reading. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is really interesting so it's not a chore to get through. Take his class!!!
Insko is a great professor. He is very enthusiastic about literature and will make you become enthused about it as well. I highly suggest that you take his class if you can.
Great prof! He is extremely well read, knows everything! Very enthusiastic about his subject matter. He also wants his students to succeed; he challenges you, but in a good way, so if you aren't up for a challenge don't take him but if you are, I definitely recommend taking him for any class!
Class was pretty easy. He was a nice guy and good teacher. The forced class participation was kind of annoying, especially if you zone out during his lecture. If you go to class and pay attention you dont need to read the books. I never bought any of the books and got a 3.4 in the class. Keeps you till 9:50 every class, which is annoying.
Class was fun. Insko is a challenging prof. He makes you work for the grade but it is well worth it in the end. His teaching style is a lil different from other profs which makes the class interesting, never a dull moment. He is enthusiastic about his subject. I would highly recommend him.
What a great professor! One of the best in the English dept. I truly enjoyed his class and his witty insights. He really gets you thinking about the reading. If given the chance, I'd definitely take more classes with him. Read the material and he loves those who speak in class!
He's a good teacher, but not an easy grader. Eng 324 was pretty demanding; he expects a lot--in class and on papers and exams. Don't take him if you want an easy A.
Prof Insko is very nice, extremely helpful, and very passionate about what he does. I dislike English classes, but he makes it fun. He also offers extra credit. He does require class participation but he makes it easy for you to talk and is sooo nice, even if you say something dumb or wrong haha. Very nice, excellent professor!!!
Great guy. makes class a lot of fun. exams and quizzes are a little on the hard side but as long as you read/know the material they are pretty straight forward.
Amazing professor. Class is very educational and discussions are well worth the time. If you're having trouble following a conversation, he tends to break everything down to the most understandable pieces for everyone. Lots of participation is expected and keeping up with the reading is absolutely mandatory for good grades.
Less of a literary class and more of a historical class, except to memorize lots of dates. Engaging prof but teaches strictly caucasian western political reform. This student was not content interested.
Very helpful prof and knows tons about his subject! Not a easy class because there is a lot of reading! I worked pretty hard and participated a lot and got a 3.4 so it's definitely a passible class. TAKE HIM
He is a nice guy but if you are not an English major stay far away...This class was supposed to be a literature class but was more of an imitation history class. His teaching style is different.I'm a senior and a history major and we had a huge historical paper to write..which contradicted everything I have learned at OU about writing history
Professor Inkso is amazing! My favorite professor. He's hilarious, down to earth, and helpful. I loved that he knew everyones names. Anyone who can make the Declaration of Independence interesting get an A in my book. Just read the books and take notes, and you will do "good, great, good." :)
He was a cool guy. I'm an English Major and it was the first lit. class i took. and i thought it was pretty amazing.
I really liked having him as a professor. He knows what he wants to do and he gets really excited to talk about it. Class participation will get you on his good side and noticed. He can get a little confusing because he goes really fast. His 2 exams are self explanatory and his weekly pop quizzes are somewhat hard so study your notes
This professor is horrible. States he will give study guide for final one week prior, did not give until night before. Study guide is useless at that. Books you read are boring and lame. Grades like you are in a 500 lvl class. Does not return grades back in a reasonable amount of time. Would never take this guy again.
This class was way harder than I expected. He is a very hard grader and his expectations are at the grad school level. The directions for the assignments are vague. He is very intelligent, but I would not take another course of his.
Best English professor I've ever had. Super enthusiastic about his subject matter, and really cares that his students are interested in the subject as well. Definitely combines History and English, but that only serves to make the literature more interesting. Great about being available to help out of class. I would take any class he offered.
LOVE Insko. He's so fun and he makes class interesting. He is pretty good about telling you what's going to be on exams. Quizzes can be tough, so always do the reading. GREAT class.
Professor Insko is the best! He's hilarious and tries his best to make class interesting. There is a heavy workload, but he is very helpful and wants everyone to understand the material. I wish he taught more classes at Oakland, I would love to take more of his courses.
At first, I didn't like this class, but I really grew to love it. He makes the class fun for everyone, even for people taking it as a prerequisite. He's intelligent about the material and respects everyone's opinions. You do have to read everything to pass quizzes and is helpful towards the tests. If you like reading then definitely take him.
I ended up taking Insko for two clases. He is very supportive and loves the material. He makes class fun; it's hard - it wasn't my best grade or easiest class, but I enjoyed it so much that I took him again. He's a wonderful professor. Just do the reading, and pay attention.
Dr. Insko is my favorite professor. Class consists of 3-4 papers, a midterm exam and final exam. For our class, he waived the final and had us turn in an 8-10 page paper instead. The midterm was brutal. You need to read absolutely everything he assigns. It will be worth your time.
Taking his class online was a nightmare. Grading took absurdly long (months!); from quizzes to study guides to the final(!) things were NEVER posted when he said they'd be. One time I emailed him about a quiz question that was accidentally marked wrong-- said he would change my grade... never did. Class isn't hard, but a constant headache. Avoid!
Very helpful, loves his subject and is willing to help any student who finds the motivation to ask for it. This is not an easy course, he expects you to be a scholar. Probably because you are attending college. Gives a lot of historical background information to the text, which makes the text more interesting.
Replies weeks later to emails, or not at all. Quizz/test answers have to be typed out, and specific, can't put "Jr." if he put the answer as "Jr". Missed a lot of points because I included periods, or forgot a comma. Most questions come from history around the literature, not the literature itself. Great class if you like American history.
I thought he was a creative and entertaining professor. He was very knowledgable and super helpful. I enjoyed his class a lot. Only complaint is slow on getting grades back.
Insko is enthusiastic, I'll give him that, but I wouldn't say he is a great "teacher". He is unclear on assignments, most of the class failed or did poorly on the midterm and the entire class had to unexpectedly retake it upon from winter break. Seems most interested in his status at OU than teaching. Not bad, but not great. Heavy reading load
Let me start by saying that Professor Insko seems like a very nice guy. I like him as a person, but unfortunately he is not much of an educator. He NEVER emailed me back throughout the entire semester. I believe I sent him emails on four separate occasions without a single response. Assignment expectations are unclear. Hard grader. Avoid him.
Insko is extremely lively and passionate about his subject. His instructions aren't always super clear and he grades slightly hard but to counteract that he is very helpful and always willing to discuss and explain things. A great professor who encourages you to analyze and question.
Really, really cool guy. Somewhat disorganized, but genuinely passionate about the subject he teaches. Not the easiest class, but definitely not the hardest. Attendance/participation are a must. Likes to put people on the spot, but with good intent. Personally, I grew from the experience. If you're confused on anything, visit during office hours.
very passionate about the class I enjoyed being there.Recommend you show up on time and engage because that's how your going to get your grade..Focus because his papers aren't so clear and he grades really hard so ask many questions.
This guy is crazy. He has some nerve being a tough grader when he isn't even clear about what he wants in for his papers. Obsessed with Melville, so be prepared to him rave about the novel of the famous fictional whale. These raves take up half the class time. Other than that, great sense of humor and nothing arrogant about him.
VERY enthusiastic. The discussions are fun, participation is mandatory, reading is mandatory. 4 papers over the term, 3-5 pages, graded fairly harshly. Nice guy, not a bad class, but a bit unclear.
Jeffery Insko can be a great professor... in a 200 level class. His verbal ticks and crutches are irritating to listen to, and his method of communicating exactly what he wants students to do in a paper. Insko does not seem to appreciate the fact that literature is art and that art is 100% subjective to the reader.
Reading is mandatory for the class, participation is as well, be prepared to be called out in class. Often assigns papers that are vague or unclear but will assist you if you do not fully understand. Hes extremely enthusiastic, especially about Melville, a little over the top sometimes, an alright class to take for 200 level
Insko doesn't mess around! It really is a 300-level class.. the reading is extremely intensive. Moby D**** the first half of the semester then Uncle Tom's Cabin, all while reading essays and short stories by other antebellum authors at the same time. Great guyprof, hard class. If you can handle the reading though, I'd definitely recommend.
He's very passionate about his job, and he's a very nice and funny guy, but as far as being a professor, he's not my favorite. I emailed him multiple times, he never once emailed me back. He doesn't post grades, the mid-term was extremely difficult. Also, he would always say he'd do something involving your grade, but never actually do it.
Super-passionate about his job which is cool. Midterm and final were both moderately easy. Very clear grading criteria. The reading isn't very intensive but if you fall behind too far you're going to be in trouble.
Not crazy difficult or too easy, lots of reading. Lectures could sometimes get confusing just because he'd be using some metaphor we weren't getting, but overall they were fine. Prof. Insko was real great when I missed a test day, so I'd recommend him on that alone. Hardest part of the class was remembering dates/names/background on the authors.
don't take! unpleasant experience all around. unclear expectations and basically, just wants you to parrot back what he says. seems to care about a FEW students during class (like someone else wrote, pretty white girts or guys) but completely inaccessible out of class.
Best teacher ever. The only class I looked forward to this entire semester and would recommend for anyone who wants to open their mind to new things and discuss problems that really need to be talked about.
Just a blast of a senior topics class. Engages with the text and the class while also trying to historicize current events in the context of the class readings. Be ready to read some difficult texts though!
He was a very passionate guy that clearly loved his work. His lectures were very hard to follow as there was no clear structure to it. His expectations during class discussions were unclear. His tests were pretty easy if you show up to class and read the books.
Insko was an okay prof, good at teaching and inspiring deep discussions but really bad about getting back to students. If you get anxious about getting a grade back fast, dont take his class. We had 2 essays due throughout the semester and didnt get grades back till the last day of class.
Taken his classes twice now and each time I've had a blast. He is a very nice and enthusiastic professor and just loves what he does, you can tell! Although, it is good to note that he takes participation and attendance very seriously so if you tend to skip classes a lot, then I would not recommend taking his class. 10/10 would recommend otherwise.
Prof. Insko is a great teacher. He gives you new, interesting ways to look at the readings, and class discussions were always thought provoking. Get ready to participate and raise your hand in class, because it is definitely encouraged. It does take him a long time to return papers and give specific guidelines for assignments, but nothing too bad.
This guy really cares about the content he teaches. Insko held fantastic lecture sessions, which were optional, that were extremely helpful. Papers were challenging, but manageable. Insko gave great feedback and was quick to grade each essay. Insko encourages students to participate, so be ready to randomly be called on. Take Insko, he was great!
Professor Insko is awesome. Classes are always fun and driven by engaging and valuable discussions about texts. He knows a ton about what he teaches and cares about his students. He does not assign much work outside of readings. Most of the grade was based on a creative group project. If you can take his course, do it.
Insko is great. I was in his Literature and the Environment course which focused on the overall ethical, cultural, and historical contexts of environmental issues and connections between human and nonhuman systems, especially regarding WHALES! Insko is wonderful and teaches eye-opening classes with great lectures and enjoyable reading assignments.
