So hard and so unhelpful. C+ Mohr is the best you can do.
jay mohr, not nearly as funny in class as on tv and in movies
c+ isnt the best you can do because i got a B+
No Comments
C+ IS the best you will do, I discourage all from this man

This guy really sucks. I dont know whether I prefer C+ Mohr or C-No-Mohr
The Best Philosophy Teacher at the University Of Scranton!!!
You have not yet done Philosophy til you take MOHR! The best in the department
He is a horrible teacher and you will be lucky to get a C+
yep the rumors are true........he's the worst
One of my favorite professors. Most priests are out in space, up in the clouds. This guy is not. He's very blunt, down-to-earth, humorous. Take him if you don't mind oral exams.
pobably the most unclear, rediculous, out of this world, self centered, egotistical priests you would ever meet, not to mention his teaching style is the worst that i have ever seen. i would STRONGLY discourage you from taking his course-- C+ mohr

He's very smart and know what he's talking about Oral exams are a little scary (he gets this horrible look on his face like he made at you but he's just listening don't worry). Great guy outside of class.
Tough class, but all quizzes are online to do before you take them in class...all test essays come from the his book, he goes over things slowly, and he helps you if you don't understand.
Terribly Hard Class. Expects you to memorize everything forever. Oral exams are terrible experience to go through but helps you learn information better. Definitely DON'T take this class if you are a Pre-Med, you do nothing related to medicine in class.
If you go to class and take the quizzes online from his website you will be fine.
makes you work for your grade. make sure you take good notes in class to prep for papers and oral exams.
OMG....I dont even want to hear the word Philosophy anymore. Dont take him, you will pull your hair out and cry every night. Very hard and doesn't help you at all.
good teacher, lots of papers, but only 3-5 pages, not too stressful, oral mid-term and final, really funny guy!
He likes to talk about humans eating humans and jumps from one subject to another. He always likes to tell you where words come from, even if they are wrong. And heaven forbid you have another view or call him on something! "C+ Mohr" = nicknam
He cracks jokes and is very funny. The material is hard though. He expects you to know a lot of definitions and etymologies of words. He is very helpful though.
It is true, unless you think like he does, he will not respect you. You may be able to do fine in his class, but he will treat you like you are a fool if you don't somehow come to understand his unique perspective as the absoulte truth.
Expectionally closed-minded and somewhat of a difficult grader. Uses Socratic questioning as a means to berate and then wonders why no one wants to talk in class. Seems to give everyone a C at best on the first paper to force you do the optional rewrite.
He is really a nice guy, once you go beyond his sometimes vulgar humor. His oral exams are really tough, but if you continually work on the computer quizzes, youll do fine. If you show an effort, he'll definitely take note and boost your grade. :)
Read the stuff he assigns, take his online quizes and don't raise your hand unless you have the answer and you're set. Don't try limping into answering a question or he'll drop some sweet Socratic Method on your ass and make you look like a moron.
tests come right out of the book but he is a very very hard grader. All essays and he is very picky. Do not raise your hand in class....you have been warned
Quizzes are easy but tests(essay) are impossible!
As a graduate who did very well at scranton, this was by far the worst experience. He wrote the book so if you dont understand him, no way to help yourself. Boring, impossible grader (tests & papers), completely unapproachable. Passed but retook with McGinely just to help GPA and got an A. C+ Mohr!!
he is a horrible teacher. always asks the class why they never participate. Maybe it's because whenever someone ties to you make them look like an idiot! A real jerk who thinks he is always right. Easy quizzes, hard tests, hard paper. STAY AWAY!
This man does not deserve to teach at all! At first you may think the class is easy with the quizzes but watch out. The tests are impossible and he is such a closed minded person. C+ Mohr is name so don't expect anything better. If you participate in class, he'll make you feel like and idiot.
Do all the online questions to pass the quizzes. Go over his book before class and whenever he says something that is in his book, highlight it. The tests are hard but if you read his book a couple times, its not so bad. The paper is impossible, even when you take quotes from his book word for word.
He expects alot from you, but doesn't bother to teach you anything. Class consists of his tangents and irrelevant "examples" that consist of church doctrine, not philosophy. He then expects a synthesis of everything he hasn't taaught. He is a smart person, but an awful teacher. Take ANYONE else.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. I have no doubt that he is a smart man but HOLY crow he can't teach. Any interest I had in the subject is completely destroyed, its impossible to feel comfortable asking questions because he acts like you're stupid the whole time watching the clock. You have been warned STAY AWAY. Any OTHER teacher has got to be better.
Fr Mohr is a quirky, but relatively cool professor. You must be prepared for class everyday since he likes to give pop quizzies, but they're super easy if you prepare for them. He is very persuasive in his arguments about certain taboo topics.
Horrible horrible teacher. You are guarnteed to regret taking his class. Even though he'll try to make you seem like a fool when you raise your hand, do it if you have a good point and don't back down on it. In the end, you may make him seem like an idiot instead (in part because he is so narrow minded)- Good Luck, and transfer out while you stil
Ok...now I know they call Father Mohr "C+ Mohr" and yes you will get a bad grade in his class if you don't study your ever-loving behind off. But I'll tell you what, it's worth it. He's so smart and smarmy and funny and engaging. Go for it. He'll give you a run for it and that final.....HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT. It will take you the full two hours. Little tip...know all about Aristotle's Ontological Argument for the Existence of God. Take him...I never loved working so hard this much.
Same person as below... wanted to mention... I got a B+...it's doable just bloody well study and stop the whining.
Horrible...I do not recomend this class. He is very hard, and is know as C+ Mohr, and that is very true. Tests are in essay form and he is very picky about how you answer them, Good Luck
Sophs and Juniors wait it out till senior year to see if someone else starts teaching it. He is too single minded and deducts points for not seeing EVERYTHING his way. Really needs a wake up to reality before this class effects anyone. Testing method sucks too since he falls asleep while you are "teaching" him. Not a hard class but it sucks.
People put him down because he is a hard grader who is set in his ways, but he knows what he's doing and; moreover, he knows what he's talking about. Take him and actually learn about Philosophy. I got a B so C+ isn't a given.
mean mean mean mean don't take him I studied my brains out and he is a very picky mean teacher. very very stuck up and hard to talk too.
difficult
a very hard teacher. class is boring and confusing.
Fr. Mohr will definately make you think before answering questions. He really knows his philosophy so if you listen and think about what he is saying you should do fine. He is very particular but if you listen in class he tells you the answers to the exam questions.
Bad teacher. not too hard, but bad and very unclear.
One of the most pompous stuck-up men I have ever met. Extremely pushy with his religious beliefs in a Philo class. Made me uncomfortable with prayers in class. Def. do not take unless you like a biased look at Philosophy through a right wing eye.
He's awesome. I took him as a sophomore and was thrown into a sea of freshman. Most people were incapable of reading the book, understanding simple explanations, and not being idiots. If you're not stupid, read the book, pay attention in class, study a little, and go step-by-methodical-step with your paper, it is an easy A.
Not an enjoyable class. I'm not sure if because he is a priest he feels he has to shove Catholisim down your throat. He tried to talk to the class about gays and lesbians and how they really don't exist, he also explained abortion and how its wrong. Don't bother arguing either, because your always going to be wrong.
By far one of the worst teachers i have ver encountered. Another prime example of a scranton making a GE course impossible. So boring in class that no one can pay attention. I think he gave me attention deficiet disorder. Made me hate philosophy.
Class is quite boring and taught from a very conservative view...notes come straight from powerpoint slides found on Blackboard and homework is on a floppy disk...ugh. Exams are oral. Opinions welcome but generally are shot down within the first few minutes. Great guy, but made me lose interest in the course rather quickly.
I don't recommend taking Professor Mohr. He's very offensive to non-christians, and has everybody say the roman catholic prayer before class. He talks about stem cell research, abortion, and gay marriage from a very conservative point of view. You have to study hard and explain everything exactly as he does. He's tough and pretty boring.
He is the most terrible human being i have ever encountered. Some of you comments below are slightly askew. He did speak in detail about abortion and partial birth abortion. he didnt say gays dont exist, he said there is no such thing as gay rights. He is pro santorum because of his anti-gay rights. I hated him and his stupid class.

Avoid this dude at all costs.
Mohr is terrible. The quizzes are uber-easy, but they in no way prepare you for his excessively difficult, all-written tests. Class is boring as hell and very difficult to pay attention. No one i have ever met liked his class.
He's difficult. He expects you to read everything he gives you 20 times so you can repeat every word back to him. Very opinionated; I couldn't stand him. Switch out if possible!
Fr. Mohr is AWESOME. He's such a nice person. He's really got it all figured out, life-wise. He's the only real Catholic (and this is a Catholic University) in the Philosophy Dept. Love him!!!
Father Mohr is easy. Take his online "study quizes" to prepare for the real quizes. His tests are all essay, but if you tune him out when he starts to debate with fellow students, and review the notes, you'll do fine.
The most opinionated man I have ever encountered. Don’t bother giving your opinion because he’ll find a way to prove you wrong. Read the text and you'll pass the quizzes. Print off power points for class, use them to study for tests and you'll be fine. Tests are writing intensive. Holds review sessions before tests - very helpful.
WORST CLASS EVER. He is extremely opinonated and you must memorize the entire textbook that he himself wrote and give it back to him word for word to get anywhere close to an B+ on tests or papers. He is extremely confusing and unclear. His quizes are easy but beyond that you're out of luck AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was really interested in taking this class, and was extremely pissed after only one class with him. unorganized and you don't learn any MEDICAL ethics until the last few weeks. I learned more med ethics in Phil 210 than this one.
When I took Fr. Mohr's class over ten years ago, he espoused very misogynistic views in class. He went so far as to say that we do not study female philosophers in History of Phil because "women are incapable" of philosophical thought." I remember little of what I learned, and was thankful for other, more competent profs, in the department.
Not a difficult teacher, but a nasty one. Impossible not to get 100% on quizzes, all questions are online. Tests are essay, but just a matter of memorization. Fr. Mohr, on the other hand, is rather unkind and narrow-minded. Not sure why he's a priest or a teacher..? I'd avoid taking him at all costs.
Definitely one of the harder teachers for philosophy, however, you do get a lot out of the class. He's really good at connecting the subject matter to things in real life. Tests require a lot of memorization but if you study at least 2 days in advance you will be fine. Don't let this guy's reputation scare you- he's not that bad.
Im pretty sure this dude WANTS everyone to fail. definitely definitely one of the hardest teachers for philosophy. i spend days studying for his tests and i take it, think i aced it, and then get a C. his tests are only essay...ugh
Easiest college A ever...the class isn't difficult at all as long as you read the book. I have no idea how people do so poorly in his class, it's easy. Of course he's opinionated, he's a priest, what do you expect? Nobody's telling you to adopt his ideals, just take the tests and write the papers how he wants them, not difficult at all.
Terrible professor. worse person.
i didnt like this professor. dont take his class you wont like him either.
An absolutely awful man with terrible teaching procedures. Memorization is NOT learning. I got a B, but only because I begged for it in his office at the end of the semester. I recommend going to all classes, trying hard, and speaking with him periodically. You will get at least a B if you suck up.
F. Mohr's Intro to Phil. class was the best classroom experience I had throughout college/law school. I suspect that many of the negative reviews were by students who had no interest in the subject or think the purpose of philosophy is to state random opinions w/ out analysis. I felt free to raise my ideas and he seemed to enjoy our conversations.
This was a terrible class. I was required to take medical ethics and was very interested in it, until I spent one day in this class. Oral exams and outdated computer exercises that you must get an 85 or better on or he takes points off your exam. Must go to every class or you will lose points. Awful opinionated man. Fell asleep during my exam.
Do not take, just don't. All his class did was strengthen my disbelief of God.
Father Mohr is a difficult teacher. If you have to take him my advise is DO THE ONLINE QUESTIONS, participate, do the assigned reading and memorize the vocabulary. As long as you do that you will be fine. It also wouldn't hurt if you look at his powerpoints before class.
Fr Mohr is a terrible human being. Avoid him at all costs. He is incredibly opiniated, ****, and just a mean guy. You have to memorize everything in the book word for word and then you MIGHT get a C on the test. Do yourself a favor and switch professors
Do the work and you will be fine. Participate a lot even though it is intimidating sometimes. He adds a point whenever he think you made a good contribution to the class. Raised my grade from a B to a B+. He isn't a horrible guy, I don't know why people are saying that. You would see he is nice if you talk to him outisde the classroom.
I graduated from the UofS several years ago & am still very fond of Fr. Mohr. He is a WONDERFUL teacher. People who hate him are lazy thinkers. People who love him, appreciate learning. I assure you.. You will learn more in his class than you will all 4 years at the UofS.
Quizzes are all online and identical to the ones he gives in class. Tests may be difficult but he is willing to help if you show an interest by meeting with him. Definitely makes a difference to be a personable with him. Also has a sick sense of humor that is mildly funny when coming from a priest. Fair warning: Don't take him seriously.
Do not take! I'm usually good with difficult teacher so I thought I could handle him- worst mistake of my life. The class average on our first test was around a 59. About half the class dropped before the semester ended. If you're stuck with him, study for tests weeks in advance. Also make to look at his online multiple choice questions.
Most of the studetns don't keep up with the reading, and therefore do poorly in the class. In all honesty Father Mohr is a great teacher and you'll will learn a lot if you put in the time. He is really funny and kind, and he keeps the class interesting by telling funny stories that help illustrate the various philosophical concepts.
If you can avoid taking him, do so. However, he's not that bad as long as you make index cards for the online questions. the quizzes are the exact questions. Also, the tests are pretty much regurgitating what he says in his book. He has very bad ideas on things and it is very hard to agree with some one the things he says. overall, he's just okay.
I'm still confused.. Maybe that's the point... And I thought I knew it all. Profoundly thankful to have spent time with this person.
This was one of the most excruciatingly boring classes I have ever had to sit through. He's very opinionated and likes to state his opinions as though they are facts. Quizzes are easy due to the practice quizzes online, but his all-essay tests are another story. Be prepared to regurgitate a lot of information back at him. Avoid him if you can.
Extremely boring class. Not very clear in getting his point across, nice person though. Still not sure what I learned, maybe the class is meant to be thought provoking? Then again what you think does not matter since his opinion is always right.
Not a hard teacher as the other comments here say.. BUT be prepared to ignore every personal opinion or idea you have because he will simply dismiss them as incorrect unless they match his word for word. Avoid him if you are not comfortable with lying about your opinions and beliefs every day.
Either his way or the highway. Quizzes are easy if you do the online quiz night before. Exams are very hard, you must repeat him word for word. Not clear in getting things across to students. Mandatory attendance. Will help if you go to office hours
HORRIBLE! Do not take him. Worst.
Extremely boring class to attend, Mohr reads from his powerpoints. He gives quizzes, but if you do the online exercises, you'll get a 100. Exams are oral and they're in his office. You sign up for a time and recite to him what he taught. Exams are intimidating but he is an easy grader. Extra credit opportunity given second half of semester.
I thought Fr. Mohr had a bad reputation going into med ethics. I took the class as a student with a second major in philosophy with plans of attending medical school and found it to be the most useful and applicable class I have ever taken. Fr. Mohr, although a little dry at times, is one of the nicest professors and campus
25 people were in my class at the beginning of the semester but now there are only 6.... avoid..
The tests are very hard and impossible to stay awake during class. If you say something that is against his beliefs he will call you out. Classes are mandatory. He does give quizzes that are easy to bump up your grade but the 2 tests and one paper are the deciding factor.
Exams are demanding but if you memorize every definition in the textbook and prep an answer for each study guide question it is possible to get a B. One required paper and quizzes after each chapter. Possibly the worst professor I've had but survived by office hours and extra credit. Expect to hear more about politics and religion than philosophy.
Mohr knows his material but is very condescending. Values class participation but intimidates students. Tests are written exams where you need to define all your terms, and my all your terms i mean EVERYTHING. Quizzes are easy if you do the online quizzes he posts in the syllabus. Wasn't as bad as I thought, but also not as good as I would've hoped
Don't believe the other comments, it is like every other class you take, the amount of work you put in equals the grade you receive. Definition is important, so the few he gives in class, memorize, just write them a few times to learn them. Tests are easy essay question, go to office hours!!!! He is a great guy and very easy to talk to.
Medical Ethics. A few quizzes that come directly from online practice questions.3 oral exams 1 oral final. He will let you retake them until you get a grade you are happy with. He is really a sweet guy, very funny if you get his humor. Visit him at office hours! He really cares about the students and is truly inspirational. Take him if you can!
He prepares you well for the quizzes however, his tests are hard. You must study definitions well. He is a nice, funny guy and I would take his class again.
One of the worst teachers I have had in my life I am so confused by this class & I spend way more time than I should be studying for this course He wrote the book himself and it is about as confusing as his lectures I went to a catholic HS run by nuns that were less opinionated than him Quizzes are easy, tests and paper and a whole different story
If you enjoy philosophy and have no problem with memorization, then take this class. I worked so hard in this class and was ecstatic to get a B. Father Mohr is brilliant and a great guy, and convinced me to not drop the class. If you put in the work then you will do well
Although his quizzes are easy, his tests are extremely difficult. Study weeks in advance if you want a passing grade. Don't expect to learn much about philosophy and even less about philosophers. Not easily approachable and you will also have to put aside your own beliefs.
quizzes are easy, but the (essay) tests are a different story. know your definitions and how they're connected together, I can't stress this enough. he's a big fan for essays and gives a lot of extra credit in the form of them
His powerpoints are copy&pasted from the book he wrote, which he makes you buy. He reads straight from the powerpoint, and attendance is mandatory (he takes you down a whole letter grade per absence). You won't pass his tests unless you memorize what's in the ppt/book verbatim, even if you answer the question correctly in a more concise manner
Easy A but it's not worth it. Having him is just an unpleasant experience. There are better professors that are just as easy. And they'll actually teach philosophy instead of theology.
Don't do it. Take anyone else.
Father. Mohr wrote his text book for the class and you wont learn anything without reading it because his lectures don't make sense. Im constantly bored and annoyed to be in his class and if you skip, he takes of a lot points from final grade every absence. He's bias and a tough grader because he teaches is what he believes philosophy is.
He is a nice guy, quizzes are easy for the most part. Tests are very hard and if you don't mention every single definition of every word you say you aren't passing.
Father Mohr is a very tough professor for this course. The textbook for the course is written by himself, and the key to doing well is memorizing his exact thoughts from the textbook and class and regurgitating them on tests and papers. He's very opinionated and not open to outside thoughts.
Fr. Mohr is nice and respectful. The class is way more like a theology class rather than an introduction to the topic of philosophy. If you do not write down the content in his textbook word for word on tests and papers, he will grade it poorly. The class felt like more of a brainwashing attempt to believe in God than an intro to philosophy.
Father Mohr is very polite, but expects you to be his yes men. If you focus on exactly what he says and basically just re-write his definitions word for word, you will do well on assignments. However, this class is taught much more like a religion class. A lot of subjects will be brought back to God/Jesus if possible, so be aware of that.
Class is boring, just reads the powerpoint. Learn little to nothing in the lecture and thats all we do. only two tests and both hard/ require a lot of studying for all written questions. Have to teach myself everything. Always was good in philosophy until this class. Good person but bad teacher. Dont recommend unless u wanna struggle for a B
Fr. Mohrs PHIL120 class is the worst class I have ever taken. Nice guy but awful professor. He is a very tough grader and allows very little room for outside opinion (he teaches from the book he wrote himself). His class destroyed GPA. Super easy quizzes but very difficult exams. I wouldnt recommend his class to anyone. Just take anyone else.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. If you miss more than one class your grade drops 2.5 points. His textbook that HE wrote makes zero sense and if your opinion or view of something is different from his you better throw your idea away because you cannot pass without forming to his views on things.
Fr. Mohr wrote his own text book for the course and teaches it as if it were theology rather than philosophy. His teachings are just his own opinions. If you do not agree with his beliefs as an 80 y/o Catholic priest, and you show that through your writing, you will not pass the course. His quizzes are easy but his tests and essays are difficult.
Take any other class besides this one. He reads from the powerpoints and is based on a theology test rather than ethics. Quizzes at the end of classes that are easy but 3 oral exams where you have to recite the information back to him which isnt hard but you have to say what he wants to hear do not go against his teachings.
so hard. take literally any professor. it is so hard to get a goof grade on his tests. his lectures are painfully boring and his homophobic and sexist comments are cringe-worthy to say the least.
I would not take his class again
If you are a freshman and ended up with Mohr as your philosophy prof, run. His lectures are asinine and nonsensical Jesuit ramblings and are impossible to study for without cheats. He harasses female students saying they should go knit instead. Your grade is based on three tests and a handful of memory quizzes. Mohr is an ass, don't take his class.
Took this second semester freshman year, a C I never should have gotten. If only I took another prof. To make a long story short, he's just a waste of time to take.
Father Mohr is a wonderful instructor and a very kind-hearted person. A lot of people complain about this class but I'm not sure why. You just need to ensure you give yourself enough time to memorize all the terms in preparation for the exams and you'll do fine. He wrote his own book and test questions come directly from the end of the chapters.
