One of the best English teachers Weber State has. I would highly recommend him. He's very logical and brings literature down to the student's level. He's also an expert on many fields in Ogden. Very entertaining.
Dr. Burrows is astute, intelligent, interesting. He appears not to invest a lot in a person's physical appearance, choosing instead to concentrate on their academic progress. Plus, he is very sympathetic to women's issues.
I have been inspired immensely by Dr. Burrows. He is concerned about his students and wants to see them succeed. If you're a lazy person don't take this class. There isn't much work but Dr. burrows won't tolerate slackers.
He doesn't seem to prepare for his lectures. He just wings it most of the time and takes up time by laughing at his own jokes and sucking on his finger. (What is that about?)
Be prepared to listen to him ramble on and on every class period. If you aren't self-motivated then don't take his class. Even if you don't talk about the books you are still required to read them. When it comes to papers- write it how he wants it.
Dr Burrows is fun - if you're not willing to participate in class it could be boring. You get lots of reading to do and it's all good stuff. Funny man, a little absent minded, great eye for good literature. Love his classes
I was so disappointed by his class. He was unprepared and didn't give clear directions for assignments. He tears apart good papers just because he doesn't agree with the topic or the stance you take on it. And why does he suck on his finger? Really weird guy. . . .
Great prof! Selects interesting req. reading If you keep up with reading, class discussion can be good He has his own comments and also lets the class direct the lecture time Very willing to help- you can turn in a paper draft before-hand. Grade=Final on the reading & a paper an A is very attainable
It was difficult to do well in a class where it is unclear what the professor wants and half the time he probably doesn't know either. He was unprepared for lectures regularly and he wasn't willing to work with me. I would advise to avoid his classes.
Fairly Difficult Professor. He was unclear with how he wanted assignments and sometimes assigned an excessive amount of work. He did have some interesting required reading material.

Really nice. A little absent minded at times, and awkward. Very willing to help.
Dr. Burrows is not a good teacher. He should stick to his family heating and cooling business. He does not care to help his students succeed. He also constantly licks his finger and then touches everything!
One of the most intelligent and best read teachers in my college experience. Takes his work in class seriously and expects students to do the same. If you're looking for an easy class, keep looking. Students who work hard will learn much from him. Highly recommendation for those who seriously want to learn.
the class can be boring but he's not. makes you work but you can learn a lot. good teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! If you have to take an extra english class, don't take him! He is very boring, makes you print hundreds of stories and poems on your own time, makes fun of students constantly, always licks his finger and points, sits on desks right in front with his legs spread, refers to sex all the time! Worst teacher I've ever had!
Burrows is very easy-going and knowledgeable. If you keep up with the readings and attend lectures, you'll pretty much guarantee yourself an A. Nice guy, nice class.
He was a good teacher for this english class. All the books we read were interseting and he had some different ways of looking at them. Yes, he did lick his fingers alot but he was pretty much a nice guy and knew what he was talking about.
Avoid this professor. He teaches about things that he doesn't know about.I did not learn anything in his class.
Infatuated with showing how smart he thinks he is. If you have your own style of writing prepare to give it up to appease him. Decent reading material but he fails to discuss it in class and has ridiculous finals. Your time is spent better elsewhere
He chose goods books for the contemporary lit class. As far as "having your own writing style," as mentioned in a previous posting - poor writing does not qualify as a writing style.
Dr. Burrows is an intersting professor, but does tend to get easily distracted & go off on tangets. He loves playing devil's advocate & many students probably don't even realize he is just provoking them in hopes of a discussion. You'll do fine as long as you keep within his definition of what constitutes a good paper, which is pretty narrow.
I didn't learn anything in this class, and the final was a joke!
A nice guy, but the man can't teach. He discusses everything BUT the text. He jokes that students are the only consumers that want the least for their money and teaches accordingly. He loves history and biography but spends little time on literary study. You will learn more if you read the books on your own.
Only show up to class on time. he does not like tardyness. Also come prepared and come everyday.
I found Dr. Burrows to be very informative, easily understood, and more than helpful regarding my time in his classroom. Students must be on time to class and able to focus completely on his classes in order to obtain a good grade.
What a ridiculous waste of my time. You know a professor is bad when other professors warn you not take their classes. This is one of those cases. This guy was arrogant and referred to feminists as "militant lesbians". He also has no grasp of the beauty of the periods of literature he teaches.
Burrows does not discuss the many reading assignments given. This lack of commitment to the assigned makes me upset. I have resulted to keeping track of the wasted minutes in class and what they are wasted on. I do not recommend this professor at all!
Teaches 1010 like an English major class and belittles answers. Does not help at all and make students feel like there is nothing they can do to make a good grade and understand the class. Not a good class to get in at all
Had us print 100s of pages of internet. Never discussed any of them. In fact had tons of reading and barely touch on any. Test was horrible. Reflective reading on things we never discussed in class. His teaching style is bizarre to say the least.
Tons of reading, sporadic discussions, and an awful final = the last class I expected an A in. The guy is just full of himself, and is simply too bored to bother teaching, preferring to confuse and annoy his students instead. However, in the end he actually doles out good grades to those who suffered through and tried to make the best of it.
Horrible teacher if you ever want to like English again stay away from him! He's very unclear about what needs to be done. Everyone in our class hated attending and most dropped. Beware of Burrows... Horrible just doesn't explain enough!
Awful teacher. He rarely touched on materials we were reading. And when he did touch on them it was never clear what he was talking about. He was much too sporadic and didn't seem to have much interest in the subject he was teaching. I love English but he definitely put a damper on my love for this subject.
this guy is FULL of gee-whiz.. and that's about it. so if you get STUCK with him go to class and stick with it. at the end of the semester you'll have 3 more credits and will have built more character.
Fun class he managed to keep it interesting for the whole 3 hours. Fast email responses and very accessible and helpful. Class didn't cover much research techniqes, which was what the class was supposed to be about. Only touched on two of the mandatory books the day before the final. LOTS of reading that was never discussed. A random class.
Read everything he assigns and you will do good. He only assigned 2 papers and a final exam to be graded.
Condescending, rude, not helpful, and most importantly he doesn't know his own material. Even other professors warned me not to take his class and that should have been a red flag, but unfortunately it wasn't. Avoid this guy, he will ruin a very beautiful and rich period of literature for any student, given adequate opportunity.
Dr. Burrows is not for all tastes...only those students who really enjoy learning and aren't too arrogant to find out what they don't know. He is the best read professor on the faculty and knows more about constructing writing that most. He challenges students' abilities, for sure. Most don't like that they fall short.
did not like his class at all he talks about pointless stuff during class but it is manditory to be in class. poorly and takes forever to give you a score. I handed in a report three times and it still hasnt been graded. I do not recommend this teacher to anyone.
Kicked me out of his class for not doing the work, which i was going to hand in today. I have been sick and haven't been able to make it, and he told me to not bother coming anymore.
Horrible class. Was bored every time. Discussion was never related to the reading. Got upset if we asked for clarification. Had to rewrite my paper to fit his viewpoint. A waste of my time and money.
Avoid this professor at all costs! His grading is random, and his idea of research is reading the encyclopedia (and this was supposed to be a research methods class). He assigns readings that are never covered in class, and his final is ridiculous: he actually gets angry if you ask what will be on it. I agree with past posts: worst professor ever
Do not take this professor, he is very rude and will not help you when you have a question. He consistently mocks students and also does not follow the material he assigns. Class consists of discussions not related to English in anyway. He threatens to fail you if he doesn't agree with your essays. I wouldn't recomend this professor to anyone.
A very interesting teacher, but he really knows what he's talking about. The structure of the class is a little unstable, but if you participate and do the reading, you will enjoy it. He's very eccentric but fun!
If you are an English student who is used to having your opinions, this is not the professor for you. If there were an arrogance scale he would hit a 9.5 on a good day.
Always informative.
I took professor Barlow for an American lit class focusing on the modern era. This is a teacher who likes to ramble on about all kinds of off topic things. ICONOCLASM
Burrows was very rude and he hated to be asked questions. He feels that if you are asking questions you are trying to be disrespectful. I would strongly recommend NOT taking this course with this professor.
Burrows is aweful. He refused to even grade some of my papers because he did not like the topic I was writing on (he does not give you topics and when you ask for one he will mock you). Even on a good day Burrows is arrogant and will mock you if you even have a simple question. Do NOT take this course with him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This Professor is very rude and refuses to even try to help you. Not only does he mock you in class, he will talk about your grades openly in front of the whole class. If he is the only one teaching a class you need to take, I would STRONGLY recommend to wait until someone else is teaching it. Pick a different Professor!
Why is this guy still teaching? There isn't enough room in this comment box to say everything I'd like to about this professor. He belittles students when they comment, and he turns nasty when they ask questions. I just learned to shut up and not say anything. The only thing I learned from this class came from the reading I did on my own.
Take what others have said here, and AVOID THIS CLASS NO MATTER WHAT.No structure to class what-so-ever,assigns books that are never discussed, or tested on. Impossible to be an enjoyable class, and I passed it?!? Beyond boring lectures, and he pointlessly rambles on for ever!! This isn't English, its a joke!!
He is not very clear on what he wants you to do, and is a hard critic on the multiple essays you write throughout the semester. He is strangely funny and nice, but never seems satisfied with any work turned in. Hard to get a good grade on assignments. Expects you to come into his class knowing everything, he views this class as a refresher course.
Dr. Burrows has a quirky humor and loves to go on tangents. Was his class hard? Yes, because there was mass amounts of reading, and we never took a test except for the final. If you come to class, participate in the discussions, and read the assigned material you will do well. I was worried about how things would turn out, but I aced the class.
Dr. Burrows,is a great teacher. His classes are a lot of fun, he just tells the class everything he knows about the subject.(Which is a lot.)Lectures with him seem more like conversations. Read the books, go to class you will be fine. He always had time to help answer any questions.
This is the funnest class you will ever take. I had a lot of fun eating goat cheese and meditating in the back of the classroom.
If you do not plan on learning English, then do not take this class. Fair teacher that always tried to better my writing. You do earn your grade, so show up and do the work!
This guy refused to grade my paper just because I was texting in his class. That being said I strongly dislike him but there was a day when he literally refused to help 75 percent of the class on the same question. Horrible teacher. Horrible class. I dropped it because I couldn't deal with his unwillingness to clarify assignments.
Burrows has weird humor and does random stuff. His assignments aren't bad, there is this online weekly Hacker grammar stuff and some essays to read out of a book. Always look up words you don't know what they mean in the essays out of the book because he quizzes you on them. He assigns 7 essays during the semester, he likes essays with research.
Burrows is a very smug and condescending guy. In class, we will start talking about history books...30 minutes later he ends the lecture on abortion....somehow. "Incomplete record, incomplete grade". Due to his poor record keeping, I nearly recieved an incomplete overall grade for random 5 point exercises he had no recorded score for.
I didn't like him at all, he was very unwilling to work with students and at times completely rude.
I have never sat through such an idiotic class. Burrows assigned a LOT of reading, but spent most of the class saying random things and laughing at his own jokes. He is sure full of himself. The final test is made up of questions about very obscure things from the readings. He will shoot you down brutally if he doesn't like your essay topic.
Mr. Burrows is a good teacher. You actually learn something in his class unlike other English teachers I've had at Weber. I think he grades fairly, he can tell how much effort you put into the class. He REALLY likes it if you talk and participate in class!! So speak up and voice your opinion!!
Good class didn't really think I was going to ever pick up the English basics like he wanted them. Term ended and it stuck. You need to write 6 papers, multiple in class exercises, and do really easy homework assignments. He was funny and I had a ball in this class
I really loved this professor. He's very entertaining and gives intereting lectures. I like how he encourages his students to use the most simple forms of the english language. The class is straightforward and engaging. Very easy A. He also assigned good reading material.
This "Professor" was not a professor at all and I knew it and I almost did not get a grade but I blackmail!
Burrows is knowledgeable and his passion for lit is evident in the way he teaches. He doesn't let students get away with emotional BS in their papers. He is open-minded if you factually support your claims with textual evidence. Yes, he does laugh at his own jokes, but they are funny if you have the intelligence to understand them. Highly recommend
One of the worst, ever. Doesn't have a plan at all, and rambles endlessly. There is no focus to any class we've had. I wouldn't have had to write this, if there weren't so much that was a problem with this teacher. Try to work around this one, you'll be glad you did.
Dr. Burrows is always willing to look over drafts of students' papers, and give constructive feedback. He wants good papers, and will work hard to help you write them. He even showed up to a study session outside of class hours to help students review for the final. If you put in the effort, he will help you every step of the way.
Worst English prfessor at Weber State i'm sure. Verry unhelpful and rude as well.
Not a helpful professor, his lectures were rarely on point and his comments and jokes could be offensive. His requirements for the class were not specific and our grades were based on two papers at the end of the class, so if you did not do well on those, you had no way to fix it. I would recommend against taking this class.
Burrows knows his stuff. However, he can't communicate correctly. He rarely talks about the material. He picks AMAZING books to read, but they are never discussed. His tests are difficult. Identifying passages from 5 books that are 200-500 pages each? You can't memorize everything. LOTS of reading. 150+ pages a week. I couldn't keep up.
This class was super easy, but you are stressed out the whole semester because he doesn't give you any idea about what your test or paper should be like.
He is condescending, with a god-complex he loves to lord over his inferiors. He struggles to stay on topic and your class will be filled with ramblings and opinions that rarely have anything to do with course matter. Is willing to review your papers before they are due which is nice but you will spend the whole semester stressed out.
Dr. Burrows knows what he is talking about, and his insights about literature are very inspirational. He is an easygoing professor, yet you need to communicate with him. Final paper is a very fun assignment if you submit an early draft(s) and listen to Dr. Burrows feedback. I have taken more than one class from Dr. Burrows and I learned a lot.
Really nice guy, just a little vague on exactly what he wants in papers which drove me crazy. There were also too many books on the syllabus alongside other material. Take a deep breath and be patient. He lets you turn in your essay early for his feedback and you will get a good grade.
If you like lectures, his classes are great. He expects a lot of reading (6+ novels). He has an exploratory method to his lectures, and so there are a lot of tangential conversations; however, I found them entertaining and educational. I would recommend his class if you enjoy a literary book club experience, but be ready to earn your grade.
His intent is good. He's passionate about the subject. He knows a lot! He also needs teaching lessons. He goes off on tangents that don't supplement the reading very well. He asks "read my mind" questions. He asks for participation, then interrupts students and implies that his answer is always the best. Grade based off of one paper and one exam.
Dr. Burrows is an excellent teacher--for some students. His classes are conversational and less structured, which for me created a thoughtful learning environment. His essay instructions are to "Have a good read and tell me about it." Frustrating for those who want structure, but he's always willing to give detailed feedback. He made me *think*.
He doesn't use canvas, which I don't like, but his class is really easy. There are a couple longer (5 pages for midterm, 10 pages for final) papers that have to be done, but he gives you feedback on the first one and lets you turn it in again. The book is nuisance and you are supposed to read, but I never have. All you do is watch movies.
While this is a literature class, I felt the amount of reading we had to do was ridiculous. We were supposed to read 200+ pages per week, which wouldn't be bad if I didn't have other classes. Burrows is a really nice guy, and he is a fair grader, but if you don't have time to do a lot of reading, then don't take this class!
If you are not taking any other classes, this class is for you. The romantic lack of structure is fine if you don't need to maintain a productive schedule with your other classwork, and the reading is great if you lounge freely in the sun and have picnics. Otherwise, the lack of structure and cookie-hiding questions are beyond frustrating.
I appreciate Professor Burrows as a person, but I'll be avoiding future classes from him. He has very interesting things to say and I enjoy his lectures, but they rarely have anything to do with the topic at hand. Lots of required reading but only about 1/6 of it is covered in class- don't be afraid to skip something if you don't have the time.
The professor is fairly unorganized and his syllabus isn't specific enough to really tell you what's going on. He isn't the biggest fan of most literary theories so avoid those. He wants discourse but due to his distaste of theory it's rather difficult to discourse cause you'll have to guess what he wants to hear.
No grading criteria for papers. You will write two 8-12 pages papers. You will read over 2000 pages. Like 8 different books. He gives the best feed back on your papers. His ego gets in the way sometimes. He'll ask you to analyze readings and when you do he'll tell you your answer is wrong 99.9% of the time. Gets off topic every class.
Meh. Wouldn't go out of my way to take a class from him but wouldn't go out of my way to avoid it either. There is lots of reading, but it isn't horrible because of the excellent choice of books. He only grades you on a paper, a (take home) final, and quizzes. I don't think he graded them too hard though. Get ready to listen to listen to him ramble
We did a ton of reading and papers, but it turns out he only grades you on the long paper and final exam at the end of the class. The exam is ridiculous--full of obscure references from books and readings. You could do all of the readings and papers and still not pass the final.
He's nice to listen to. Just go to class and skim read. You just need to know Spark Notes summary of the books and read the online assignments because they're not too long, and the specifics matter on pop quizzes. He doesn't take attendance, but he will notice if you're not there. I thought he was funny and charming. Gives great paper feedback.
Crappy teacher, do yourself a favor and don't take a class by him.
Dr. Burrows made me grow as a writer. He gave great feedback and was willing to let anyone in the class redo assignments or papers. He gave us lots of practice with creating different theses based off of each play we read. His assignments were easy to understand, but harder to do in practice. His words are well crafted in writing and speaking.
This class took up a lot of my time, which was frustrating. I would definitely recommend doing all the assigned readings because he does quiz you on them IN DETAIL. You get to read a lot of really amazing books in this class. Some of the short stories are really inappropriate. He forces participation and he is a bit condescending.
Dr. Burrows is intelligent and knows his material. However, his lectures are hard to follow. He gets easily distracted and gets off course. His grading method is ambiguous, which makes writing papers very difficult. Make sure to meet with him in person if you take this class. This action is essential to get clear feedback and a good grade.
Burrows makes you feel connected to the material. Yes, he may be off-topic at times, but his grading, feedback, and teaching methods have made me a better writer and I am glad I took his class. He is also really down to earth and he is a great professor to get help from when you are in need.
Burrows is an old-school professor. He rarely updates canvas, so you rarely know what your grade is. After the first two weeks of the course, all the lectures are inherently the same. You have to read 2 essays a week, most written before 2000. There are 4 essays worth 100pts, with rewrites on the first 3. The final exam is a take-home and easy.
Professor Burrows was below par to say the least. You never really knew what was expected and his quizzes were surprisingly difficult for a 1010 class. Would not recommend.
I don't understand the dislike for Burrows. His lectures are interesting and funny, and feedback on papers is thorough, timely, and refreshingly honest. There is a ton of reading (it is a literature class, so...) but the list keeps your attention. An "A" is a lofty goal, but the grading scale is rather generous after that. Open to opposing views.
Al over the place pretty much covers it. There were days where he was amusing and stayed on topic, but a lot of the time he rambled on about subjects that had nothing to do with the course. He could also be very condescending if he didn't agree with your interpretation of a story. He did not go over half of the stories we read.
I transferred out because he did not move at a pace that felt productive. He is a kind and knowledgeable Professor, however I don't operate well when I feel like my time is being wasted. He will ramble your ear off, but immediately jump on any phone he sees in class. I need a professor who is engaging and helps me to get stuff done.
In 3 yrs of school he is the only professor I've had who I didn't like. His teaching style is confusing. If you don't share his opinions in literary analysis, he will mark you down. Even if you can prove your POV. Also, he is condescending. I saw students completely shut down in his class. Being around him made me uncomfortable. He needs to retire.
Lectures were worthless because he could not stay on one topic for more than five minutes. I spent the whole semester listening to his opinion. He had us buy two books that we never read. "Is it an informative or persuasive essay? What specific criteria are you looking for?" "It's both. Just write me a good essay. Any topic." Like, what????????
While hes a good teacher and invested in what hes teaching, sometimes his lectures can feel very long. But maybe thats because I took a night class. He doesnt ever show you the grade hes giving you, so be prepared to not know. But I do think he made me a better writer and we watched a lot of plays in class. Sometimes he brought us pizza.
The course is literary analysis, but he tells you exactly how you're supposed to interpret every little thing. Final exam was graded on how well you are able to figure out what he thought things meant and what you remember him mentioning in class. No room for discussion on different POVs. His way or the highway, and the amount of readings is insane
I went to every lecture, got out my notebook and proceeded to zone out. There was is an insane amount of reading for an entry level course. You write 2 papers and have a take home exam. I did the readings but you could probably get away with using spark notes. Felt like the class was a waste of my time. He brings too much religion into it.
Taking this during the pandemic has been challenging. He has strong (and uncomfy) opinions and rambles a lot. No wonder the class is 3 hours long. The midterm paper's only instruction was "write about Shakespeare," then he had VERY specific critiques and made people do rewrites. He is also low key creepy. Kept commenting about the women in class.
Very nice, sweet guy. It was common to talk about nonsense for the entire period and have "paper is due next class" after class was over. Honestly you don't learn much in class. Feels like there is no structure and his teaching is very sporadic. On the good side he doesn't mark you down for late assignments. Just turn in when you can.
He is super laid back and gives you so much opportunity to improve. All you do is write essays and do a few easy assignments. I missed class a few too many times and he still gave me full participation. He is difficult to get a hold of outside of class but I think that is due to him being old school and not knowing how to work a computer well.
It's so hard to pay attention to what he is saying, he goes on random tangents all the time. These aren't fun or interesting tangents they are boring tangents that last forever. Also, his grading scale is horrible, I'm a straight A B student and I'm getting a D somehow with flawless papers. Lastly, this dude is a creep around girls, so women beware
It is easy to tell that Professor Burrows is knowledgeable and he passionate about books. Unfortunately, that passion does not translate to his teaching methods. He is a nice guy, but his expectations are very unclear. His syllabus is vague, his lectures are FULL of random tangents that are irrelevant to the subject, and he is a very tough grader.
Ignores the student's questions and makes a lot of questionable comments. If you can tune him out, you'll just have 2 papers and a test. It's an easy class, but an uncomfortable one if you're a girl.
Professor Burrows is a good guy, but not a great professor. He assigns an impossible amount of reading every week; I gave up about halfway through and just hoped for the best. Class just consists of him talking about the reading and often goes off on tangents. There are two papers and a couple assignments, but other than that just show up to class.
Somehow managed to get an A in his class- thats basically unheard of. If you skip class even once, youll fall behind- plus, youll have to write a paper on what you missed. Lots of homework- 4 to 6 short stories a week on top of 50+ pages of novels. Even dedicating time for reading, I still fell behind more than once. Definitely dont recommend
This class wasn't super hard. He has you buy books to read for class. We only did assignments for one of the books. He is very off-topic during his lectures. If you can avoid this class as your starting class do it! His essays are hard because he grades pretty tough.

Do not waste your time with this professor. His lectures were pointless as he would go on meaningless and often times inappropriate tangents. It was never clear what you were actually supposed to be learning in class that day. He poorly utilizes Canvas, and is a tough grader considering his lack of teaching. I had to drop the class it was that bad.
1. This professor makes women uncomfortable in his class by making creepy comments. 2. I made it a point to do well in class and answered questions all the time. He told me he didnt remember me every single time I went to class (3x per week) and proceeded to call me a question mark for some reason. I walked out of his class in tears. Retire.
He is very passionate about English. He made me more interested in literature and emphasized the importance of critical thinking when it came to researching and writing papers. The lectures were generally informative, but he would go on tangents. Participation and attendance are important. Lenient with regards to papers, assignments, quizes, etc.
I did not benefit from going to his class. He just rambled most of the time. I went to class because he had a policy that we had to turn in a 1 1/2 page essay for each day that we miss. These papers do not give us points, just excuses our absences. He did NOT make an exception for when I had Covid. He brings up inappropriate subjects and is creepy.
He does not work well with students. Attendance is mandatory but we learn nothing in class. Avoid taking his class at all costs.
Long lectures didn't apply to the essays we needed to do in class
Very difficult class, despite it being English 1010 and not a higher level. He doesn't seem all that willing to work with students either and gives vague ambiguous feedback. If taking for a credit, look for an alternative.
Little wiggle room. I missed two days of class due to a vacation that had been arranged beforehand and he told me in plain text that me dropping out would be inevitable. Interesting. Difficult assignments and lots of reading. Year ones beware!
4 papers in total. the topic for the papers is anything. You can write about literally anything. But if he doesn't like your topic he'll mark you down. Wants to hear your "voice" in your essay so you have to pick smth that pertains to ur life. Says some out-of-pocket things, and he talks a lot about things that don't have anything to do with class.
Dr. Burrows is a fine professor if you already have a TON of knowledge about the topics he teaches. Unfortunately his lectures are hard to understand and his grading criteria is basically nonexistent, he goes off on a lot of tangents that don't relate to the topic and also says some out of pocket things that give lots of pause.
Burrows is one of the worst professors. The main issue I had with him is his obsession with discussing inappropriate themes in books. I understand it's necessary, however it was excessive. We would talk about "c*ckholding" for all of class and then spend five minutes on others. If you have to, keep your head down and don't disagree with him.

We would talk about "c*ckholding" for all of class and then spend five minutes on others. If you have to, keep your head down and don't disagree with him.
This professor is very difficult. I did English 2020 and all he did was random detailed pop quizzes. I felt like he didn't teach, instead just expected you to know things. The content for this course was also very disturbing. Do not take!!!!!!
He does not write in plain English, so it's hard puzzle out what he's trying to say every assignment. I was always confused on what he wanted. He also grades harshly, especially for minor grammar mistakes. Fairly easy class tho and he allowed revisions for assignments. Just stressful trying to figure out what he's actually asking on assignments.
Lectures were extremely uncomfortable due to his excessive tangents on politics and really odd topics. Harsh grader with unclear criteria for essays. Attendance was absolutely mandatory with penalties of half a letter grade. Disregard the syllabus completely- nothing applied to the actual class. Would never recommend.
I think I am a little bias because I had his class at a 9 am. I could never show up through the last half of the school year because I would rather sleep in than sit in his class for a whole hour and a half because it would be so boring. Attendance is mandatory because each day you skip you get a half letter grade taken off of your final.
Dr. Burrows' class is a tough one, with unfocused lectures and unclear grading. However, using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can help navigate the class. Attend every session and stay engaged to get the most out of it.
This class was horrible! Professor Burrows every class would call students by name and have them answer random questions in front of the class. If you answer wrong he often belittled you in front everyone. He made two girls cry in my class. It was very toxic. I always left class feeling horrible from his constant belittling.
Burrows can occasionally give good lectures but often spirals into unrelated and occasionally inappropriate tangents. He also offers students the option of choosing their topic for the four class papers but grades the choice of topic harshly. This can be especially frustrating since the essays will make up most of your grade.
Strict attendance policy. Must complete all work to receive a grade. Lots of homework. Acts like you only have his class.
I had surgery and had to miss class 2 times and he started to question how big the surgery was after I told hid earlier that week before that I would be missing class. He handled the situation very poorly and was rude about the whole thing. He's old and likes to have power where he can.
This class lacked structure and practical writing instruction. Essays came with no clear guidelines, and readings like Assassination Vacation had no real purpose beyond pop quizzes. Tangents and vague expectations left me feeling like I learned nothing useful. Disappointing and not worth the time or cost. One star because he does care.
Dr. Burrows DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO USE CANVAS. He will repeatedly grade assignments 0 until they are graded- dropping class grades by 50 points because your entire grade is based off of 4 different papers. This class is a miserable, boring, hour and a half lecture. I don't know who gave this man more than 50 minutes, but they made a mistake.
Quizzes every single class that aren't actually focusing on English topics, but rather focus on minute details of the readings that nobody can remember. Also, if you ever miss class, you have to write a two-page make-up paper, and he doesn't excuse you for medical absences. And, he would frequently make comments that made my peers uncomfortable.
Burrows is such a bad professor. He is the toughest grader imaginable, super strict, and disrespectful to students. I watched him pick on a student so badly that they dropped the class. WSU needs to stop being lazy and actually read the reports filed on him and do something about it.
