Folmer never taught CH 101 before my class. His exams consisted of some material we never went over in class. Lectures weren't that comprehensible, slides went by too fast. Did help with webassign (had a forum) though.
He is a very nice professor, but his teaching level and his test levels are not the same. I took AP Chemistry at a good high school and got a 5 on the exam (which gave me 8 credit hours), and I decided to take CH 101 for a grade, thinking it would be a bird course. It's not. Overall: Good personality, moderate level of teaching, hard tests.
Prof. Jacob Folmer is a very nice guy, but teaches at a Quanitative or Organic 2 level. he expects you to learn and absorb everything once he has stated it. And his test are unneccesarily hard, and if you tell him this, he gets angry. I would avoid if you arents already great at chemistry.
I had him for his first time teaching 101. It?s not remotely easy; the test looks nothing like the homework. His lectures are unbearable, trust me the people I sat around had no clue what he was talking about most of the time.
Dr. folmer was a really nice guy and he was pretty easy to understand but his tests were way to hard. They were completely different than the homework also. He went over material extremely fast and expected you to remember it all. I would not recommend taking him for ch 101.
Dr. Folmer is a nice person, but he is almost too smart to teach. He expects you to remember everything that he says, the tests are NOTHING at all like the homework, the text book doesn't really help either. He makes chem 101 ridiculously hard. I would definitely not recommend him.
NEVER HAVE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He is horrible!!
Avoid this teacher unless you already know a lot about chemistry he is a nice person however teaches as though one already know exactly what he is talking about also he can be a little unapproachable also he does not respond to emails very fast if at all!
Whoever wrote that Jaap Folmer is nice and too smart to teach needs to get checked. Jaap Folmer is extremely arrogant and the fact that he cannot relay simple information simply is not a mark of brilliance. Teaching a 101 class is not that hard and he makes it extremely difficult. I would absolutely advise not taking him.
He explains things well and curves grades really well. Several of our tests he curved by 20 points. He's not the most interesting teacher (doesn't ever get off track, and slightly dull voiced) but he is a good solid teacher for a good grade.
If you know chemistry, go for it. Maybe. He was okay, definitely not great though. I had a pretty hard time of understanding all the material, which shouldnt have been a problem. The only reason I kept my grades up was because I had a good lab TA. He made everything from lecture actually make sense. Without the lab, I probably would have flunked.
Mr. Folmer is a really nice guy, but he teaches advanced material quickly and thinks you retain it immediately. Tests are hard, but are all multiple choice or t/f which makes it a bit easier.
This teacher does not teach at the level of a freshman and he is extremely hard to understand. He randomly posts and moves homework and takes weeks to give you back your test grades. He looks down on you if you ask questions because you should "already know it." definitely do NOT recommend.
I have enjoyed his class very much. He is an admirable scientist and professor. His ability to teach chemistry far surpassed my original expectations.
He didn't explain things well, information that was simple in high school seemed impossible in his class.
Didnt explain things well at all and assumed that you knew everything he was talking about in class. Moved to quickly with his power point in class and I was never able to take the notes needed to study. The only good thing about his class was the way he curved grades. He is the worst instructor ive ever had, through high school and through college
I emailed him numerous times throughout the semester asking questions about specific topics and he either would respond with smart comments or not respond at all. He is very rude and not a teacher that you will ever "get to know".
Really helpful
He is a really good professor in my opinion. Some people say that the class moved too fast forgetting that it is an chem intro class for science majors so some level of knowledge is assumed. This was my second attempt to pass 101 (the first time was with a diff instructor) and I passed. He teaches with an approach thats more visual.
I'm an engineering major, so I'm not a chem guy. Have to take the class to matriculate, I had a 8:30am w/ folmer for 2 hours. Insanely hard to stay awake, especially with his dutch accent. Very, very hard class, tests were brutal and all multiple choice, and homework all the time. My gf and I were both in the class, she almost failed, I got a B+
Be prepared to teach yourself. If I didn't I would have gotten a much lower grade
I'm not quite sure I can call Jaap an instructor. Everyone I talk to is having difficulty in his class. He expects us to know the material before he 'teaches' it to us, and we are required to do webassigns consistently not knowing what to do. No extra credit is offered and I do not believe he honestly cares how anyone does in the class.
Dr. Folmer is a hard teacher! However not impossible. I made a A+ in the class, and 90s on all of his test(I made a B- in highschool chem). He expects you to study, and do your homework. All of the questions on the test, come right from the homework, but the numbers are mixed up. He is a great teacher to prepare a freshman for college profs.
While Dr. Folmer is certainly tough, he is a very helpful and lucid lecturer. He is always very kind when approached during office hours, and has no issue with spending an upwards of 45 minutes out of class answering questions. All in all, he is a great freshman professor.
Dr. Folmer is a terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I got all A's in my high school chem course but might fail this class. Dr. Folmer does not explain anything, never responds to emails, and does nothing to help prepare his students for his impossible tests. I don't think he cares if his students fail which is why most of them do.
ABSOLUTELY the worst professor I've had. He does not care about his students which becomes apparent when he doesn't respond to any emails and his tests are on absolutely nothing we've discussed or that has been provided as study material. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. find another chemistry professor with a better rating and grade distribution.
This is a pretty easy class. The professor is kind of interesting b.c he's smart and has an accent. As long as you use your book and do well on the homework, you should get outta there with an A+ the way I did. And no, I'm not bragging b.c an A+ in a class like that gives me nothing much to brag about. People just hate him b.c they don't wanna work
Folmer can not take his extreme knowledge of chemistry and teach it to college level students. His class is the hardest I have ever taken; exams were about 5% related to his notes, lectures and webassignproblemsand 95% maniacal"fun"questions thought up to test your ability to sort through 12 concepts all in one problem. Great curves, horrible class
DO NOT TAKE AS A FRESHMAN. you WILL be teaching yourself. It is useless to go to class, but he gives you +/- points for attendance. He takes attendance randomly(especially the day after a thurs football game) If you email him politely and say thank you he is very helpful. Nice guy except for when he is teaching. Teaches like a grad professor.
He's a nice guy, but he puts quite a bit on the student. He gives a lot of work on test problems, overall, if you spend hours on end, you will do good, unfortunately, I have other classes too.
DON'T TAKE FOLMER AT ALL COSTS
HORRIBLE!!!! Impossible to learn from, the test have nothing to do with what he teaches and nothing on the tests comes from the homework. To pass the class you basically have to be a genius in chemistry beforehand.
Do not take chemistry with this teacher!!!!! awful!!! Worst teacher I have ever had! tests have nothing to do with anything he teaches you and he says he'll curve them but he doesn't. My classes average was a 73. I think maybe 2 people had an A and 5 with a B
It definitely wasn't an easy course, but an A is possible. His tests are tricky, but he knows it, and he gives a significant curve when necessary. He may not seem approachable, but he is. Expect to put in a lot of effort.
He's awful. He doesn't respond to emails, his lectures aren't helpful, and have nothing to do with the tests nor the webassign... only the recitations which had different teachers were helpful. I still passed, but jesus, this class was awful. Would not recommend.
Great guy, decent teacher. Understands the material and tries to explain things to the best of his ability, but you HAVE to read the textbook in order to do well in his class. Sounds like a lot of work, but its not all that bad. If you're good in chemistry I would definitely recommend taking his class. If not, I would search for a different option.
Let me give you a little bit of my background.. I graduated high school valedictorian of my class. I made ALL A's & B's first and second semester, EXCEPT for in Jaap's class. Homework assignments and class lectures were way more basic than exams. He admitted to asking exam questions in riddles. Worst learning experience EVER!
Love the camo shorts, did not love the class. Probably the most confusing teacher I've had: he teaches at a much higher level than needed. He loves chemistry too much.
Jaap, although he may know his chemistry, cannot teach it at all. His lectures have no structure and only consist of him writing gibberish on the board. Nice man, but terrible teacher. Also, tests are very hard and rarely require calculation. They are all theory-based questions.
The lectures are pretty pointless to attend. He goes on rants about higher level chemistry. The tests...are hard - mainly composed of higher thinking, theory questions so unless you read and memorized the textbook, good luck. Nice and friendly guy though, just cannot teach.
The guy is really smart and knows what he is talking about, but he is not good at explaining things in lecture. He'll start talking about something, go on a tangent, and then go on to the next thing.
DO NOT TAKE WITH FOLMER! absolutely terrible at explaining. Goes off on random tangents and told my class 20% of us needed to cut our losses and go flip burgers since we didnt do well on the test. His tests are puzzles and even though he curves 20 points, averages were in the 60s. TAKE WITH ANYONE ELSE BUT HIM
He doesn't take attendance, so most of the class never came. It's understandable though, because even if you pay 100% attention, you still won't understand anything. The tests are nearly impossible because he words the questions weirdly. TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR BUT FOLMER.
There is a "curve" on tests, but it basically consists of him raising the classes grades by up to a factor of up to 1.3. Go to SI if you can because even though the SI instructor may be a little confused by him as well, they can usually explain it in a way that makes since, and they sometimes have secrets to doing better on tests.
AT ALL COSTS DO NOT TAKE FOLMER. Seriously wait another semester or literally take any other professor. I wish that I had never taken him. Granted I passed the class, but it was not easy. His tests are impossible and he does not care about his students. He is rude and is the worst teacher I have ever had. AVOID FOLMER
A hard course that definitely requires dedicated time outside of lecture. Dr. Folmer is not the best at teaching and his exams are ridiculously specific. However he does give 1.2 to 1.3 curves. Use the textbook!
Folmer is tricky, but if you just pay attention and take notes, you'll be fine. I found myself taking pictures of his slideshows as he flew through them.. Just make sure you review them after class if you can. Use the textbook and actually do your Webassigns. I got 75's on all my tests, curved to 100 because everyone failed so badly. Not terrible
Long, unclear lectures where he often goes off on a tangent. I found it extremely difficult to pay attention. Want to get in contact with him? Better not email because you WILL NOT hear back. Turned a class that should have been easy to a challenge. I taught the majority of the material to myself. I absolutely do NOT recommend you take this folmer.
He explains his lectures as if to a bunch of elementary schoolers, and his webassigns are ridiculously long.
probably a nice guy but my goodness how gave him a teaching license.
I would not recommend this professor for a student who needs to take classes past Ch101. If you need to take Organic Chemistry of Intro. to Organic, I definitely suggest taking another teacher. I passed, and got B's on my exams. But I owe that ALL to my tutor. Folmer gives you and extra 25% on your exams, but even with that, you don't do well.
Really horrible teacher who seems like he's out to get his students with tricky test questions that are long winded and way too complicated. The tests are really conceptual and he doesn't go nearly that in depth in his lectures. Would not recommend.
Avoid him if you can. His tests are hard and long. The first 3 tests were too long and complex for the 50 minutes allowed, but the final was ok time-wise. He doesn't have a plan for his lectures. Starts talking about something and ends up talking about something else. If you must take him practice his old tests and use flashcards for memorization.
The guy knows his stuff, but isn't a clear presenter. I did relatively fine in the class, with tests getting curved by 30 points. The consistent homework, TA led practicum, and reviewing notes immediately after class for 30 minutes over lunch really helped my knowledge of the subject. His camo cargo shorts at age 60 make him a campus legend.
I think Dr. Folmer gets a bad rap. He's really not that bad. 90% of the time, he seems like a nice guy and teaches the material fairly well. The problem is that most students don't want to attend lecture, and blame him when they do poorly. However, he does occasionally have an outburst of anger. And his tests are crazy hard. But curved like 40 pts.
WORST PROF EVER!! Whatever you do, do not take him... literally anyone else. Rants in class about things off topic, homework NOTHING like the test, rude to students, accent hard to understand etc..
Dr. Folmer is a bad teacher. He spends half of the time tell you that the stuff on his slides is actually "not true," and that there are always little exceptions, making it difficult to know what to take notes on. He "talks" about chemistry - almost in a theoretical sense - rather than actually just teaching the course. This is science, not english
Dr. Folmer is very smart, but seems to advanced to teach 101. His lectures are confusing and his tests are very difficult compared to the level of information lectured. Must read textbook. Not helpful outside of class and very seldom responds to e-mails. Would not recommend no matter what.
I would not recommend him. It's possible to do well in his class if you already know the basics of Chemistry really well or don't mind teaching yourself based on the book, but don't expect to learn the material from going to his class. His tests are worded and formatted oddly, but he does give a good curve.
Horrible
Extremely difficult class for First Year students. Strongly advise against taking the class.
Oh Jaap. He will tell you his life story over and over again. During his lectures, he doesn't really say anything information wise. I have learned next to nothing going to the lectures. SO GET READY TO READ A HUGE CHEM BOOK. His tests are awful! Its not a simple answer this problem like a normal chem teacher, its like 5 questions in one. DONT DO IT
People complain that Folmer is difficult, but really he's just rigorous. If you enjoy chemistry or want to get good at itor if you want to develop your problem-solving skillstake Folmer. He's tough, but his curve is a safety net; you can struggle and grow without risking your GPA. If you aren't willing to work, though, go for someone else.
Jaap Folmer is a horrible teacher. I took 3 full years of chemistry in high school, and expected to get into CH101 and do perfectly well. I'm doing ok, but not learning a thing! all he does is give crazy, ridiculous tests and curve them by like 30 points. What he tries to teach in class isn't on the homeworks or on the test, do not take his class!
Jaap Folmer is an awesome professor personally, but thats basically the extent of it. His lectures are very confusing, they are not taught in a chronological order material-wise, and it is very clear he is simply 'winging it'. His tests are also very abstract. And just for perspective, the class average on the last test was a 48%...
Japp is a great professor to talk to. His explanations can be confusing at times; but, the does a good job of pointing out what he wants us to take away from his lectures. He is really accessible outside of class. In fact if you do no question him outside of class you definitely will not get the material. You absolutely must read the text book!
Dr. Folmer is a nice guy. He is just a bit confusing at times in class. If you read the textbook you will be fine. He also curves a lot.
Dr. Folmer clearly knows his stuff, but his delivery is lacking. His lectures can be a bit confusing at times. The worst part were his tests; they were insanely difficult. He accompanies them with a nice curve, but you have to do a lot of studying just to pass with the curve. If you can take it with someone else, do so.
Folmer is a super nice guy, knows chemistry really well, but not great at teaching 101. Tests are stupid hard, and the assignments dont do a great job of preparing you for them.
1. Cargo shorts 2. Run away 3. All done here
My advice to you is: read the following rates (they aren't lying). Folmer is difficult to understand and hardly explains chemistry topics where it makes any sense!! I was advised not to take him, but thought maybe I would just have to work harder. Unless you have a serious chemistry foundation or are a genius, do not take his class.
Tests are extremely difficult, the book and his notes/powerpoint are no help. Horrible professor, doesn't lecture on things relevant to the class topic and doesn't help when you stop by office hours. Completely disrespectful no matter how polite you are to him.
Tests are impossible and his lectures are difficult to understand. Highly recommend not taking his class
The best way to succeed in this class is to read the textbook early. Most information can be found in the textbook, but if you haven't read the chapter, his lectures will be useless. Go to lecture if you read the chapter but there are a few things you still aren't clear on. Otherwise, good luck. However, he does curve tests.
I would not recommend taking his class. Lectures don't help you learn, tests are impossible and he doesn't give you back your tests, only the grade. Overall would not recommend him to anyone.
Lectures are confusing and all over the place. He has to curve tests a ton which shows that no one understands anything he's talking about. Test questions are 100x harder than anything he's ever even touched on in class.
He is clearly knowledgeable about his field of study, yet lack the ability to convey this knowledge to his students. The lectures are quite sporadic and random without any solid goal. Highly recommend reading the book before class.
His lectures are not similar to the tests, but he will mention random facts and they have a good chance to be on the test. His class is way too advanced for an introductory chem that most people have to take, even if your major has nothing to do with chem. At all costs, take it with someone else.
Amazing professor! Specialized in solid state chemistry in Netherlands from what I remember. Love his anecdotes and experience. Tends to stray from topic sometimes, but doesn't bother me. A little moody at times, but does have some important wisdom outside of chemistry that he sometimes conveys about life in general.
Difficulty of tests is way beyond that of homework and lecture. Dr. Folmer seems like a nice enough guy but makes the concepts very difficult to understand. Do not take CH 101 with him.
Dr. Folmer has interesting lectures. He goes over what is on a slide and then goes off on knowledge related to that slide. I loved his class because of that. He is very knowledgable and tells you a lot of cool information. Only the tests and the webassigns are graded. The practice tests are extremely similar. Study it for 2 hours and you'll get a B
I knew more Chemistry before taking this class.
Folmer is difficult for most people, you need to have some background in chemistry to really do well. His tests have a lot of trick questions in them so the best way to study is to use the practice tests to prepare yourself for the kinds of questions he asks. He does curve his tests heavily which makes up for the kinds of questions he asks.
Good class. Make sure you take the practice tests. There's a fairly big curve in the end.
It's very difficult to prepare for his tests. They are unrelated to lectures or homework assignments. Best thing you can do is practice some of his previous tests, however his tests are all loaded with trick questions and multi part answers to multiple choice questions that give each question 5 individual answers unrelated to the question's prompt.
HE CURVES ALL OF HIS TESTS!! Would not have passed if he didn't. He is not a good teacher and makes things much more complicated than they should be in an entry level chem class. Tests are all multiple choice and they range in difficulty. Overall, wouldn't recommend his teaching but he makes the class passable with the curves and all MC tests
HIs teaching style can only be described as supplemental to the book. He seems to understand the subject very well however he thinks that he is teaching to a group of seniors. He wont go over the basics but will instead jump straight to the complex concepts. Tests are the worst part, extremely hard and not related to class material.
Dr. Folmer's class is bearable. You can easily get through with an A. You just need to adapt what you would expect a normal chemistry class would be to what his actually is. He thinks very abstract and thinks conceptually. Don't be overwhelmed that his lectures are up in the air, listen to what he says and be patient. Read textbook and do homework.
While the material he covers is not impossible to understand, it is not represented well on the tests. The tests are extremely hard and seem to be a mash of concepts. The level of difficulty is not one expected from an intro class.
Folmer does not teach well, and makes simple concepts way too complex. His tests are just made to trick you, and it is hit or miss even if you know the information well. His grade averages are so bad that he has to have set curves before he gives tests. Although the curves can boost your grade quite a bit, I would not recommend taking this class.
the worst 101 professor out there. i stopped going to class after the first test and read the book and ended up making higher grades on the tests. the tests are full of trick questions that are impossible to logically think through in the time for the test.
my friend didn't go to class all semester and got a higher grade than me. avoid this class if you can. if you can't, read the textbook and pray.
One of the rudest professors I have ever encountered. Threatened to have anyone who missed class more than three times reported to the university for admittance and financial aid reconsideration. When 50% of the class missed a so called "easy" test question, he said anyone who got it wrong should just give up school now and go flip burgers.
Clutchest Professor in history. Hooked me up when I didn't deserve it. I had an A, but missed the final exam and he did not let me make it up. He said I would get a C- at best. When I got my grade back I still got an A somehow. Good guy. Class is easy if you have a lot of random chemistry knowledge. If not, you are almost entirely done for.
