class is a joke
learn more about TV by watching it than attending class
Read your syllabus! Follow directions! Ask for help and he will help you. Listen closely.
It's a fun class. He's pretty clear on what he wants and a lot of people recommended him to me so I took his class. He's really good!
Jabbar is the man, I dont care what anyone else says. Yes, AT FIRST he is a little difficult to comprehend, but like anyone's accent you get to understand it. He is huge on Powerpoint and videos. Do the work, he'll do you right.
Jabbar is very nice, understanding too. Great professor
He's a great teacher, very helpful. May be a little hard to understand at times but overall he's really good!
The best teacher I have ever had. He respects you and cares. The first time I had him, I was ignorant to the way he spoke, but I just let it go and I am glad because I totally understand everything he says. Take Jabbar for Intro to Intercultural.
This guy is pretty cool. Really nice. Fairly easy too. I missed the essentially the first week of class (it was a one day a week night class) and still did pretty good in the class. I definitely am not a person who likes to speak publicly either!
Great professor, probably my favorite. Very kind and cares about the well being of others. Difficult to understand at first but gets easier.
I cant believe this professor received good ratings. Must be the fact that he is an easy professor to pass under. As far as learning anything in his courses, your better off staying home. This guy is a joke...
An easy grade if you're looking for one, but you won't learn anything. We did more advanced work in my high school class. He doesn't have any idea how to use the equipment.
nice guy, diffiult to understand at first, but you get use to it. loves his students and discussing different cultures. participate and you'll be fine.
If you want an easy grade, take this professor. If you want to learn a whole lot, you may want to look into someone else. Nice guy, though.
this was a media debate course and he was so helpful to me even though i am not a major, he was really nice, and i think that the nasty person who posted on schoolswap is just ignorant
He's very helpful and he cares about his students a lot. He'll be more than happy to help you out and clarify things for you if you didn't understand something!
Al-Obaidi does not speak clear english, he is moody and very inconsistant. His lectures are borring and hard to understand.
Can't understand him
Participation is key! Raise your hand and respond! DO NOT take this class if you do not like to talk. So - show up and give some comments and you will do great!
TO ALL COMM MAJORS! DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! NO SPEAKA THE ENGLISH! terrible lectures! moody, starts yelling, can't understand a word of what he is saying! inconsistent grading, demands WAY too much. worst class i have ever taken.
This teacher is a nice guy but he is so hard to understand. Bring a translator if you want to know what he is saying!!
Dr. Al-Obaidi is impressionable. Yes, he has a language barrier, but it does not impede his ability to teach communications. Talk to him. He knows how to listen. After the events of 911 he instilled in me the importance of human communication skills.
FREAKIN' JABBAR
took all the TV classes with him (he's the only one that teaches the higher levels) and almost got thrown out of my internship because I didn't learn anything about production work. easy classes and lectures were OK but hands-on stuff was a nightmare.
We are in Jabbar's class right now actually. He's a good teacher, just not clear on what he wants for an assignment. Not meaning that you can't understand his accent, because you can ask him to repeat it and he will. His accent doesn't affect his teaching
He's hard to understand sometimes b/c of his accent but he's very helpful and he loves his students. Just go to class and do all the assignments and ask him for help when you don't understand!
Yes, he has an accent but didn't affect his teaching ability. This guy wants to help you if you are putting an honest effort in-- and he will realize it and appreciate it.
The semester just ended - overall we all learned a lot - word of advice - take Al-Obaidi if you are willing to PARTICIPATE and TALK EVERY class ... do this and all of your work and you will do great!!
Classes seem harder than they actually are
I think Dr Al-Obaidi is a great teacher. For those who have a problem listening and understanding...pay attention! I have taken him for 2 classes and worked for him. It takes work in his class(yes)but he will challenge you to do top notch work!
Just Awesome
Alright prof. but class was very disorganized and boring. Most of the teaching is done by WenPeng and the BTV staff.
This was a practicum class so it was all on us. But if we were not to meet he would email us that morning, no advance notice at all! Nice guy, but really unclear about what he wanted us to do exactly. Class itself was really unorganized! Usually only two students would show up for class meetings!
hated the class!!
Jabbar is a really interesting and smart man. If you have a brain, and half a thought in your brain, you should do well. Jabbar likes hearing the thoughts and opinions of students. Do the work, read and participate in class, and you'll do well. He rants and mumbles occasionally, but that's him!
Awesome!
this class was so unorganized. it is by far the worst class ever
worst class&teacher. he talks so darn loud!! i left with a migraine each class; and he would have a 'pop-quiz' on stuff we were supposed to read for the next class, so he obviously doesnt understand his own syllubus. to get anything correct it must be perfect in his eyes, which is inpossible!!
really fun class. He is a very helpful guy that is very interested in his students work. But WOW when ever he lectured it was soo boring and redundant and he would trail off. his accent is kinda thick to which doesnt help. good guy though, very helpful and easy to get along with.
He's very helpful...great class overall! If you're one of those people who are too lazy to do the work for any of your classes then you'd say that it was hard!
Cool guy. Easy teacher. Very helpful
Once you understand his accent, he will be one of the most interesting professors you will meet. I know him personnally and I'm proud to consider him a friend. He will help you if you let him and show effor. He loves creativity.

Dr. Al-Obaidi completely rocks, he will help you out and really enjoys what he is doing, two thumbs up!
awful class, i didnt learn a thing, the online tests never worked right, he gave me a headache, and we never understood our assignments.

this is my second class with him. i made it through the class because i taught myself. he yells sometimes when he talks and it gave me a headache.
You may not understand what he is talking about all the time but he is very entertaining. Do what is told of you and you'll be all set. I recommend Jabar for any course. He is a fair grader and a good guy.

He shouldnt be teaching and hes a jerk. you cant understand his assignments or anything he says.
Only take him if you need the credits, don't expect to learn anything. He does not give any substantial feedback and did not return graded papers or test. He is not interested in helping students learn. He will only acknowledge ideas related to his political views. As chair, he gives the Communications department a negative image.
Good class.
Easy enough class,It was a summer web course and much of the learning is done on your own. For the head of the comm dept, he doesn't communicate well, good luck with email and his assignment instructions are on the vague side. Doesn't seem like much time or thought was put into planning the syllabus/assignments. Seems to just press B for all grades
This guy is a jerk. For the head of the communication department, he is awful at communicating with students. Had him for an advisor and he had to be one of the most condesending people ever.
Great Professor! Great Class! You have to have the motivation to do well and apply effort, and you will get through the course with a great score.
The guy is the man. Remember, if you don't show any interest in the class then you won't enjoy it- truth about every class. His classes are interesting and you can learn a lot. It deals with real life communication/media issues. If you ever seek help, he'll be more than happy to advise. Great professor.
He brought life to the communication department. He opened a program between a few universities in Jordan and Bridgewater State. Now students can travel overseas and learn amidst a new culture. How many professors have done that before? He's the man...
Took an online class with him on Iranian Film. The textbook was horrendous and the assignmetns repetitive. Professor al-Obaidi himself was useless and very difficult to get in touch with. Would not recommend taking an online class with him.
Jabbar screwed me out of the class I needed to graduate and then it wasn't even offered the next semester.
Greatest Professor ever! He was always willing to help me after class. He def. doesnt chase after you. If you want help, you need to get with him after. To understand his speak you just need to listen and you'll get it! Would take any class of his!
He was always willing to help us. He has contacts all over the world and he has opened doors for us. I respect him and admire him and am grateful for his help. Sometimes we Americans are spoiled and expect to achieve without any real work or studying or commitment to our classes. If we give him our best, he always responds and gives us much more.
Very giving and helpful professor. Unlike so many, his grades mean something. He opens doors for his students.
He is a wonderfully giving professor and man. He grows tired of students who are immature and childish. So do so many of us who are embarrassed by students who want our University to be like their high schools. I appreciate his high standards and experience and his worldwide views. I would not recommend him to immature and lazy students. Great man!
Although at times a bit unclear, I can see he is a compassionate and great man with so much knowledge to give us. I admired him for all he has accomplished and for his kindness to me when I was ill. I am grateful to Prof. Jabbar and recommend him to others...especially communication majors.
My best lessons were learned in his office and talking to him in a small group. My Com 130 prof HIGHLY recommended him and I am happy I listened to him. Best advice I was given so far at BSU!! Dr. Jabbar is extremely intelligent and he is not for the childish type of student who is so often at BSU. But he has helped me and he is second to none!
Took an online class w/ him. Very unclear direction and little to no response from him when emailed to clarify. Got a grade of B or B+ no matter how much effort I put into it, which seemed to be the case w/ my fellow peers. I do not recommend him for an online class. Try him in person maybe, I've heard he's much better in a physical environment.
I don't feel as though this man puts a lot of effort into his online classes. This is the second online class I've taken w/ him & I've never been able to get a good response from him via email when I had a question. His level of feedback on your work is very minimal so its almost impossible to know how you're doing in the class. Don't take online.
Took online doesnt respond to Email got to got to his office! We're COMMUNICATION majors sometimes gotta talk to people.
Can be unclear at times and doesn't always respond to e-mails, but he is a really nice guy and the expectations of the class are laid out pretty clearly at the beginning of the semester. As long as you do the work required and do it on time you should at least get an A-. I would take him again.
I took this professor for my tv studio production class and did well; the class was pretty easy. I tried taking him for an online class however and the workload is near impossible to do unless it is the only class you're taking. Directions online are also confusing and unclear. Would not reccommend him for online classes.
An easy grader if you manage to figure out what he wants. Assignment instructions are pretty vague and being a web course made it difficult to reach him at times.
I do not recommend for online class. His syllabus was confusing, had a lot of typos and had incorrect dates. he seemed like he did care at all about this class.
He is a nice guy and seems to be knowledgeable but he does not communicate well in English. I struggled to understand what he was saying and I think he struggles to understand what people are saying to him. He is the most helpful in one on one meetings. If you have a hard time with the subject matter, I would not advise taking this course with him.
I took his online course and I can't believe anyone had an issue with it. Literally, all you have to do is what he asks and you will get an A. I had no issue with this at all.
Jabbar can be all over the place for Comm 496. He can be difficult to understand but his Comm 496 is a joke. He breaks things into parts and the discussion board is easy. Thought this class was going to be hard but it really isn't. If you participate and do what he asks, you're good. He wants to help you out as best as he can. Take him. Nice guy
Jabbar is extremely unorganized and rude. I took him for an online class and it was a mistake. ALL of his due dates are contradicting so it makes it easy to miss an assignment. For example, the dates on the syllabus do no math his weekly reminder dates and his weekly reminder dates do not match discussion board due date. Emailing him is a joke too.
Really great professor, understood where I was coming from. Easily gives very good grades to satisfactory posts for assignments; textbook quality was very good, I learned a lot from it! If I had a chance to see him in the hallway, I will always say 'Hello', because he is one of the best professors I ever had.
Dr. Al-Obaidi is perhaps one of the most brilliantly experienced and intelligent professors in the entire COMM dept. I say this not only because of the work he assigns, but by the way he executes his lessons as well as how he goes about his assignments. He really makes you think. Trust me, if you do what you're supposed to do, you will be pleased.
Really enticing class. The content and lessons presented really made you think. Definitely a class worth taking if you are into Documentary Film.
had a hard time understanding him since he has a very thick accent. he is extremely unorganized, couldn't see him outside of the class.
I have taken 2 classes with him and each time his was my favorite of the semester. I am taking two more with him before I graduate. He is a really sweet man and incredibly knowledgeable. He his a super easy grader and only gives 1 or 2 very short assignments a week on his online classes. The textbooks he chooses are actually really informative.
This was very much so the worst class I've ever taken. Although I passed, I found simply trying to understand what the instructions for every assignment were. This professor is very unclear about absolutely everything. The due dates do NOT align with the syllabus whatsoever. He is also incredibly rude! Do not take!!!
Professor Al-Obaidi makes sure to email you every week with what is expected of you. While he doesnt give the best feedback, he grades on a fair scale.
Took Dr. Al-Obaidi for an online summer course. His syllabus was a little messy. However, Dr. Al-Obaidi was still one of the best professors I have taken here. The work load in his class was more than reasonable, and he grades super easy as long as you submit work on time. I will definitely be taking another class with him at some point
I have had Dr. Al-Obaidi as my advisor, and I have never met someone praying on my downfall more than this man. It felt like he was purposefully putting up road blocks at ever turn when trying to register for classes, to the point where I had to ask the professors directly to put me in their class, and he did this every semester.
Good man but not so much teacher. The class he advertised was nothing in what we learned, so many of us feel robbed of what we were expecting. He's nice but his lectures meant little to nothing to what we were actually doing. He is also extremely inept with any sort of technology. YouTube is a struggle for him, he couldn't exit full screen
In an online asynchronous format, Dr. Al-Obaidi forgoes the structured and scheduled curriculum usually typical of this class format, for a random, inconsistent, and opaque curriculum that is completely non-conducive to what is supposed to be an accessible style of learning. This antiquated and unforgiving approach has no place in modern teaching.
