First year teacher... still has alot to learn.
Hard to look at, moves extremely quickly, does not post her notes
Moves quickly, but covers everything and is very clear, tests are hard but fair.
Worst teacher in history.

She basically teaches what's in the book word for word. Making class somewhat optional, but also making it so there's little chance to have things that you don't understand elaborated upon or explained in a better way.
too many overheads, can't get everything written down--THERES SO MUCH STUFF!!! and the recitations didnt really help prepare for exams
boring classes.
she has little knowledge of biology outside of the textbook. She presents the material in an oversimplified manner, which leaves you stranded for the very difficult tests.
She knows little about the course material. She has almost no ability to answer questions. She makes lecture boring and simple while she takes test questions from her more knowledgeable colleagues for difficult exams. AND the SPELLING ERRORS!
Dr. Newman was my favorite teacher ever. Everytime I had a question, she made 100% sure I understood her, even if it took a few different ways of explaining things. Don't complain about all the info and notes- your classes won't get any easier!
Easy to understand lectures
DO NOT TAKE DOCTOR NEWMAN! She is perhaps the worst teacher I have ever had. Her tests do not contain the babified material that she discusses and they are so hard.
I had Dr. Newman when she first started at Pitt. Indeed she wasn'the best teacher, but the material is boring to begin wtih. She used very effective techniques to clarify concepts. Also, she was ALWAYS available for help outside of class. She's nice.
Dr Newman taught me to really appreciate the world around us. Sure it was kind of boring, but the information was presented in an organized manner and she was always available to help with understanding the material.
Her tests are VERY hard. She expects everyone to be a BioChemist! I have a hard time remembering fine details and unfortunately, her tests are on the fine details. Hope I pass this one.
Dr. Newman is a great teacher, especially after Franzen. She is really enthusiastic and clear about all of her material.
Great, great teacher. Actually likes teaching and presents the material in a clear and easy to understand manner. Very visual teacher. If your worried about writing, she puts all her notes on courseweb now
i thought she was great when i had her - made me really consider being a bio major (curto cured me of that)
She is a very good teacher. If you do not understand a thing about biology, definitely get her. She will explain the world to you, and she has so much patience for a college professor. DO NOT TAKE ROBERTS.... SHE IS WORSE THAN THE DEVIL!
A very good prof, she knows what she teaches to a great extent and explains with good visuals. Though she may not be 100% knowledgeable of ALL Bio, she answers what she can out of her field and isn't afraid to say she doesn't know.
one of the worst professors i have ever had. All she does in class is read notes that she has you print off. You better be prepared to memorize the book because her test are inpossible.
she downright sucks, she tells you that you dont need to know some info. then puts it on the test---avoid by all means
Very good teacher, explains things in a way that's easy to understans. She's interested in what she teaches and isn't afraid to say when she doesn't know something. Tests can be hard, but if you put time into it they're not too bad. Great teacher to take for Bio 1!
Great teacher, simplifies the course material for the students, sometimes too much, but supplimenting lectures with the text is highly reccommended. Tests are very hard, so thoroughly understand the concepts and terms presented in the book and lecture notes.
She stood up there and talked about stuff that wasn't in the books or on the test just because she wanted to. Does she do schrooms? I hate her.

her tests were ridiculously hard. there was a huge curve at the end of the year which helped alot.
Very unclear and tests are unpredictable so it doesn't matter if you study or not..The only thing that can help you on an exam is luck b/c she pulls those questions out of a little black hat... Dreams at night about ways to make us fail...Very unprofessional and she makes horrible, unfunny analogies
Random questions on test that makes you say..."An all-nighter for this kind of crap?!" Very good notes I must say; doesn't test completely from notes though...Manages to reiterate the most simplistic ideas four to five times per minute! Too many analogies to connect ideas.
Newman is the worst teacher ever. I didn't learn anything. Everytime I looked at her I got pissed off. I think she might have been attempting to teach from another book. The analogies never made anything easy. I don't know who gave her a doctorate but they must not have met her first.
she had clear notes but the test questions were always off the wall. she tried to make class fun but ended up pissing people off
I'm not sure where she gets the exams from. She teaches out of another book, gives simple notes & tells students they don't need to know specifics, but specifics are definitely on exams. The class might not suck so bad if she understood biology herself.
She is the worst prof ever, don't take her class! Take any other prof! Over 40% didn't pass with a C and couldn't move on! Don't take her unless you want to take the class more than once!
She doesn't exactly teach, just throws some notes up and reads them. Don't bother asking questions that don't absolutely deal with the notes because she'll have no stinkin clue. Tests are a bummer, too. Know ever detail you never woulda thought you had to know.

How did this woman become a professor? I know more about the material she teaches than she does! She'll stand in front of the room and re-read her notes and get lost doing so. Just print out notes and stay home and read them yourself. Nice lady, but not a thought provoking professor.
I think that Newman is an o.k. teacher. She has nice notes and she makes it clear. Just read the book and go by her notes on what to focus on and you'll be fine. She has great office hours and she tries to help whenever it is needed.
I learned a lot in her class which was organized and interesting enough. I think she has the best teaching ability in Bio 1, but I have compared her tests with friends from Roberts's and Sherwin's classes and there is unanimous agreement that she is the most difficult. I also had Roberts myself. Newman is tougher but explains things much better.
Very nice lady. Lots of demonstrations to clarify concepts, but they're a bit too simple sometimes. A lot of people hate her becuse she tries to dumb the info down too much, but it's not that bad. Tests aren't terribly hard, but don't wait until the last minute to study or you're screwed. Nice curve at the end of the year.
terrible terrible teacher and person. she was the worst teacher i've EVER had. not only does she not teach very well (all powerpoint) she doesn't know what she's talking about. when asked a question, a lot of the time she doesn't have a clue how to answer. her class was a waste of time and money.

First of all this womans analogies are the worst thing you can ever think of. "The Nucleus Is Town Center""Im Me Dont Attack Me" Whats she talking about? She has an anology for every idea and they are more confusing than helpful. Also after comparing her tests with other profs she is by far the hardest She only recites her notes and teaches nothing
This woman doesn't know what biology is. If you ask her a question, she will simply say "I dont know" or she will make something up until a student in her class proves her wrong and totally embarasses her. I know more before I go to class, and when she talks I feel myself getting dumber, and dumber. She is totally ruining my college experience. Ame
I love this class and I love the analogies she uses. What do you mean she doesn't know biology? She knows a lot more than what is in the book. But you can't expect her to know everything! Give her credit for not trying to BS you with a made-up answer! I plan on taking Newman for bio 2 this spring. She rocks!
I have grown to like Dr. Newman. Although she does simplify things with analogies, there is plenty of difficult material in the textbook if that suits your fancy. She does her job well, which is to help her students understand the material and guide them through the text. Her questions are intuitive, and require actual application of knowledge.
who the hell granted this women a phd?? what were they thinking. i have never studied so hard to just feel like an idiot for a 50 min test period. the only thing i learned in this class was how to play mousetrap--yes, she taught us how to play mousetrap. if you value your pre-med/bio or whatever science future, steer clear of this women.
The mouse trap was an analogy for signal transduction. analogy: noun ( pl. -gies) a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification : an analogy. If you don't recognize an analogy when you see/hear one, who granted you admission to Pitt? Dr. Newman is an excellent teacher!
Newman is a good teacher, if you study and keep up with the material you'll do fine. She uses a lot of analogues, which obliviously work because everyone remembers them. She makes complicated and uninteresting things seem more practical.
She is horrible. ALMOST as bad as Laurel Roberts.

She is an awful teacher and worse person. She takes enjoyment in being more vague, more difficult, and less thourough than any of the other professors. Do not take this woman if you have hopes of going to grad school. Your competition is doing much better trust me. Also, By the end of the course, she will probably mjake you hate Bio.
Absolutely ridiculous tests, even if you know the material it won't help, the tests are too confusing but shes not that bad i guess if you are into bio
To do well on her tests, you have to understand the material, not just memorize your way thru. Okay, she has an odd sense of humor. But she's getting us ready for med school for sure. If you want to learn your stuff, take Newman for sure.
I never even had this professor and she is affecting me in a negative way...my girlfriend has her for bio and i hear about how horrible of a teacher is almost everyday and then have to console her after she takes one of her ridiculous tests...if you are planning to take her or your significant other is planning on taking her, i strongly discourage!
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. So bad that i have decided to change my major because she has turned me so far away from science! if you want to do good and class and not be frustrated every day of your life do not take JACKIE NEWMAN
Not the best teacher, but not the worst by far. She knows what she is talking about, and the best part about her class is her Notes that she gives out. In class she just repeats her own notes. I Never read a single page in the text book, I just read her notes over and over, and got B's on all of her tests. The tests can be tricky, so be careful.
awful experience with her...not very understanding of illnesses when she should be bc shes a bio teacher...very difficult class, even if you are inclined to do well in bio, impossible tests, your grades are based upon 4 tests (lowest test grade is dropped) and a final and 15 pts ex credit possibility, which even that is hard...DONT TAKE HER CLASS
She is very full of herself...and her tests are impossible no matter how much you study. Good luck.
Awful teacher, gives out good notes but they are never in order and her tests are impossible.
You need to take this class like you need a bullet in your head. I recommend any other bio teacher before this one. She is so full of herself. I could sit here and expain to you how bad this lady is but im almost out of space, ill just say that she doesnt give a **** about whether or not the entire class fails.
This is the second time I've taken Bio0150, (first I had Roberts, earlier this year I had Curto--both also Bio0150 teachers) This course GENERALLY is NOT easy. Her tests are from the DEPARTMENT and if you have a problem with a question, she will let you challenge it. Her notes are clear and she's good-spirited. Much better than the alternatives.
Avoid her if possible.
I had her freshman year for bio and she was the worst teacher I have ever had. I ended up doing well in the class but it was no thanks to her. Her notes are completely disorganized and she doesnt answer questions well, which is terrible considering this is supposed to be one of the most difficult classes at Pitt.
Foundations of biology is a difficult class regardless of who is teaching...she is an excellent, excellent teacher, dont believe everything you read on rate my professor about this lady, she gives excellent notes, and has helpful recitations. She gives great comparisons between concepts and real life things, which helps to really clarify whats happening.
Hands down the worst professor I've had. One of those professor's who takes her job way to seriously, so makes it hell on all her students. Has favorites and gives those kids the good grades, it was so utterly blatant. Do not take her.
One of the most horrible people to walk the planet. Makes fun of you out loud to the class if you ask a question, pretty much hated by all of her students- and for good reason. Her tests are ridiculously hard, not only do you have to read the chapters; but you also must read the detailed captions under every picture if you want even a C. Shes satan

I don't what kind of crack pipe some of my classmates are smoking out of. She is one of the better professors I've had. Her office is always open if you have questions and she is approachable. She is organized and professional. Many of my classmates failed this class multiple with other teachers; don't blame her for chosing to drink over studying.
Don't be scared off by the negative comments from the college freshmen. They're not used to actual work. This woman is a fine teacher with connections and experience in the industry. If you want to know your stuff, pick Newman. Her tests can be a little quirky at times, but nothing too bad.
hardest tests ever... not based on notes-- the questions are seriously from the mcats - worst class ever and a definite gpa destroyer
Extremely hard, if you want an A, you can spend all your time reading and rereading. out of 300 students that took her in 2005, 100 of them failed or droped out. AVOID at all costs
Personally, I liked Newman a lot. While her tests are sometimes tricky with the wording, that can easily be avoided if you're careful when taking the exams. She uses diagrams in class from different sources which really helps you understand if you're having difficulty picturing what she is talking about. Read the chapters and you'll do fine.
The tests are hard...very hard. When you study for 20 hours for a test, you don't expect an 80...after the curve. She is cool sometimes, but others...not so much.
She is absolutely horrible! she seemed really nice in the beginning, liek you would just have to work really hard, but when you study for 40 hours for every test and still fail, thats absurd! dont ruin your life or gpa and dont take her! p.s- she makes you want to jump from the top of the cathedral......
Very hard class. People say bio just isn't easy, but with the right prof., the class can be enjoyable and you can learn alot. Newman does not offer this. Although she gives preprinted notes and just goes over those notes, reading the text is a must. Studying alot will get you a C... so if you want above avg, prepare yourself.
She's tough, but fair. Yeah, you work hard. But I learned so much in this class. I didn't to well at first, even though I was putting in the hours. Went to see her, got study tips so I knew how to study better. It turned my grades around! I know how to study now, and I pulled up my scores. Thinking about switching my major 'cause of Dr.N. Take her!
Shes a nice lady and everything..and her lectures are really good and helpful. I think that her test are completely not what shes saying in the lectures though, its like sometimes I'd just stare at the question and be like Are you SERIOUS? You can take her, but expect A LOT of reading and time.
She is knowledgeable, but very condescending. And it's no joke when people say she's tough. My best grade was a C, and that's the first time I've ever done that bad. I got a 1390 on the SAT, and a D- in her class. Avoid her at all costs!!!
She is good at making it clear how concepts tie together, and she tries to make the information relatable with a lot of good examples and analogies. She is very helpful, but as others have said, she can be rather condescending.
She is a hard prof, but so is every other bio 1 prof. Her lectures can be boring at times, but then really interesting some other days. Just be aware that her policy is basically that the lectures supplement the textbook, not the other way around like other profs. You can get a good grade in the class, but just be ready to work for it.
Presents material thorougly and is readily available during recitation and in office hours. Her exams are very detailed but doable through heavy studying.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy have Dr. Newman at all. She started out the year really well but her lectures soon became very fast and confusing and it got to a point where I couldn't comprehend her and take notes at the same time. The exams are very hard.
Definitely one of my least favorite professors. Very condescending and acts like answering questions is a chore. Lectures are completely pointless. She makes things seem really easy in class and then comes up with questions out of no where on exams. Bottom line- if you want to do well in this class, you have to know how to study.
Newman makes all the exams way to hard. if you like challenges, go ahead and take her. if you want a good grade, do not. her lectures are good, but her tests are too hard for bio 1.
In lecture she can appear condescending or even aggravated with questions, but if you visit her office hours, she can be somewhat personable. Get her old tests so that you can expect the type of tricky, and oft ill-written questions she puts on her exams. God's speed if you have her.
Dr. Newman is a fantastic teacher--if you're willing to work in her class. Her tests are difficult because she makes you apply the things you've learned--not just regurgitate them. If you like Biology and really want to learn a lot, I highly recommend her.
Dr. Newman makes biology very interesting and easy to understand, although she will destroy you on exams. Find old exams and use them- questions are repeated. There must've been a big curve cause I had a low B exam average but got an A- in the class.
Foundations is a hard class regardless of who you have - I took it twice. However, Newman is very organized and presents the information in a manner that it makes sense to learn it unlike the book. The best advice I can give is ask questions during lecture, because it will force her to clarify herself; just be aware that she can be condescending.
OK HERES the scoop on newman, if u've read other comments on Newman u've prob heard that she is Very hard or Very easy....the truth is this SHE IS HARD, DO NOT BE FOOLED, is she a good teacher, shes a great teacher by all means take her, but be prepared to study ur asssssssss off, if u dont no hwo to study college material taking her will help
This is college, youre obviously working harder for your grades. I'd say I'm an average student though I never had to study in HS. This class was FULL of studying-- read chapters, notes & worksheets. She often went too fast to take good notes but if you find other people in the class just share. Attend all lectures, she makes them interesting!
Bio is hard so go to lectures, recitations, do the worksheets, read. She's entertaining and very available if you need help (she has a copy of the text at home so she can answer e-mails any time). I went to the recitations and did the worksheets and did fine, knew someone who didn't, they failed. Know the stuff thoroughly and you'll be alright.
Never understood her teaching, and she told us she would purposely put questions on the test designed to trick us?! how is that everrrr helpful!?
interesting use of examples to explain things
Dr. Newman is a great TEACHER, but you do have to learn the material very thoroughly, read the book, use the bioportal on the internet, and focus all of your energy on the exams. She can be vague in her test questions at times, which is a negative. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would not take her, but she is still a solid teacher.
Her tests are very difficult, although she does drop your worst exam. Not helpful, nor approachable. Hard class. I suggest a different professor.
She's hard, but not impossible. I got a C but I guess I deserved it because I didn't study as much as I could have. My friends had Sherwin and their tests were so much easier than ours, so if you struggle with biology, I suggest going with a different professor.
Dr. Newman is a HARD professor. Her tests are hard and her lectures are tough to keep up with. The trick to doing well in her class is reading and taking notes on the book. Also, think about her test questions for a while before answering. Don't take her class if you have a better option.
By no means is Prof. Newman an easy professor but I found her very approachable and helpful with questions outside of class. She does move fast and her tests are extremely difficult. The important thing is not to try and memorize but practice thinking past the text and how it would be used in a real setting.
Newman's test are overly ambiguous and unclear... for whatever reason she tries to trick you. she isn't lenient on grading to compensate, as i had an 'A' average on her tests and then took her final only to get a 'B' in the class. would NOT recommend. other bio teacher are much more fair with grades.
Dr. Newman is awesome and tries so hard to make learning fun. You'll work hard, but you'll learn a lot!
Newman is a great teacher, but is very tough and expects a lot out of you. Her exams are tricky though; a lot of the multiple choice options seem the same or like they can all be right but she gives you the chance to argue them afterwords. She's not an easy teacher, but definately worth taking; I learned a lot.
Tests are average I would say. If you pay attention in lecture and make sure to ask questions about the material, the class seems more enjoyable. Watch out for test and clicker questions. She always seems like she's trying to trick you.
Very hard teacher. Do not take her. You will regret it.
Prof. Newman is a good teacher, in comparison to the other choices. However, her test are really tricky and confusing. It's not that you don't know the material, it's just that during the test you always have to ask yourself,"What would Prof. Newman Pick?" I do recommend her if you have good studying skills...if you dont your wasting your time.
Dr. Newman is a hard professor only in that you must think like her to do well. I study hard, I mean hard, every time but there are just those question where unless you are her or just lucky you will probably not get. Try and get many old exams so you can get used to her language. I do not recommend her for future students, try taking Dr. Ghosh.
I never set my standards for anything better than a C after the first exam. very difficult class, hard teacher. don't miss class unless you want to lose points on the clicker questions.
her exams are much more difficult when compared to other professors.
Very difficult tests! She is not a terrible teacher, but getting a good grade in this class reflects a great student - not a great teacher. I thought she was about an average teacher with very difficult tests. It is not the end of the world to get Dr. Newman as a teacher, but I would have preferred someone else.
well the thing for bio is from what i hear its pick your poison. newman definately knows her stuff and explains it pretty well but the tests are very tough. also she feels the need to intimidate her students for no reason and at times acts like her class is the only one that matters. the ARC was very useful for me
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! It doesnt matter how much you study or go to study sessions. Her tests are meant to trick you. The final was nearly impossible and was way worse than the practice final she had posted in the langley library. Unless you are a good test taker, i wouldnt take this class!!!
Her test are very hard. There is one right answer and one really right answer. Be prepared to get tricked on tests. Try to avoid her class
Horrible teacher. She puts you down and wants to make you feel like her little peon that will never be able to learn and know as much as she does. The tests are hard and tricky for no reason. Do Not take Newman.
Dr. Newman is a good teacher. She expects a lot from her students. She is very approachable after class or in office hours. You must study very hard (and 1-2 weeks ahead) to pass this class. The tests are tricky, but not impossible. Take advantage of iclicker questions. You'll definitely learn a lot, which in the long run, is very beneficial.
TERRIBLE! Do not take her if you dont have to! You will not get the grade you want if you take her!
This class is touch! Don't be afraid of bio because of Professor Newman, but more so because of the volume of material. Professor Newman is good and tries to explain things cleaerly. The tests are difficult because there is SOOO much material, not because professor Newman is trying to trick us.
Newmann is a hit or a miss, it depends on how you learn. If you are the type of person to relate to random analogies, then she is perfect for you. Otherwise lecture is a joke and the book should become your best friend. Seriously, if youve never grown attactched to a book before, in her class would be the perfect time.
Professor Newman is like an annoying kindergarten teacher, she doesn't realize that most kids don't need to be talked down to, she can't motivate students and she squashes any interest you may have in the subject. There's no point for her teaching the class, the tests are all memorization of the book, don't waste your time listening to her.
Obviously you aren't going to like Newman if you did poorly in her class. She's a great professor and is really easy to talk to. It's intro bio, people, it's supposed to be difficult.
Dr. Newman wants to be a good teacher but it doesn't come off that way. In my experience, she is very condescending and made me feel stupid when I asked a question . She curves to a 75% so it doesn't seem she really wants you to do well. Her exams are difficult, she blatantly tries to trick you with 2 possible answers, but which is MORE correct?
She's really, really tough. Her lectures aren't bad, but her tests are killer. There always seems to be more than one right answer. There's a pretty good curve on the class overall though... I always got somewhere from a c- to a b- on exams, and ended up with a B overall.
Very tough course by nature. Newman helps explain and teach the material very well but her exams deliberately try to trick you. If you want to learn, take Newman, but if you'd like a good grade, consider another professor
This woman is crazy. Her exams are extremely tough, but I showed up all the time. I did learn a lot, but obviously not the made up material she wanted me to learn for the final. There was just way too many obscure things that she wanted you to grasp.. kind of ridiculous for an intro to effin Bio lecture.
She is a very hard professor. If you want to get a good grade then you should consider someone else. Her tests trick you. Overall if you have to take biology I would say take someone else
She does clicker questions immediately when class begins so don't be late...they count! Seems miserable teaching and complains about her kids alot. Treats students like kids... one of the only professors I've had that has yelled at 300 adults to be quiet. test are manageable but obscure questions...trickyy. Don't bank on passing your first time.
Not everyone likes Dr. Newman. Although I had heard this prior to, I went into the class with an open mind, and I actually truly liked her. She was always helpful to me. Everyone that says her lectures don't make sense...it is because you didn't read the book before class. If you do, THEN her lectures are crystal clear and help you enormously!
To everyone who complains about this class... suck it up. People say that this professor is mean, unapproachable, or purposely likes to trick or fail students. That's garbage. 90% of the people complaining on here or in general are spiteful of their bad exam grades because they didn't try hard enough. Dr. Newman does her job well. Very well.
All she does is talk about her kids. I want to learn biology for crying out loud! I dont care what your little Joey had for breakfast. Very unapproachable, doesnt know her stuff, and is a very poor professor. I learn more from her TA's than I do from her. I am going to drop the class and take it with a different proffesor. I have a B- in the class
Tests are not that difficult. She does not try to trick you like some people suggest. All questions can be answered using topics and ideas gone over in class. She does talk about her kids a bit much, and she may be unclear with some explanations. Also, Bio 0150 is a weeder course for want-to-be med students. It's supposed to be hard.
Don't be intimidated by Dr. Newman. She definitely knows what she's talking about, and genuinely tries to be accessible and encouraging. She provides a lot of supplemental materials to the text. Her tests are tricky, but the class is hard by nature, and is used to 'weed out' pre-health field students. Go in with an open mind and you'll be fine.
I was very nervous going into this class, but got a B. Having said that, I worked EXTREMELY hard, and managed to fail one test, but she drops your lowest. ALL bio classes at Pitt are very difficult, not just Jackie's but keeping up with notes and the test is extremely important. Go to her office hrs, she's much more approachable there.
I went into her office hours today before the final, and she was so unfriendly that I asked one question and left. Hopefully I pass the final. The material is very dense and you have to know every single small thing. Unfortunately, she doesn't really help clarify issues unless they are super specific questions. Avoid at all cost, NOT A NICE LADY
While I did learn a lot from Dr. Newman, she is definitely a hard prof. that you should try to avoid if you're not willing to put a good amount of work into her class. No matter what she says, she tries to trick you on her tests so read carefully! O and the curve was completely unhelpful.
Very helpful professor and class. A lot of work for two credits but you'll get a lot out of it and Dr. Newman does her best to make it as painless as possible.
She is clear in her lectures, and does a decent job teaching and holding your attention. However, her tests are tricky, and no matter how much you study, you probably won't do that well. She is sarcastic and cynical. I didn't like her as a person, but it wasn't impossible to get my B. An A on the other hand...
Dr. Newman is a very good professor that is very good at making her points clear. Requires a lot of work in order to receive a good grade, but this is the case with any bio class. Uses a lot of analogies in her teaching. Very strong personality, but she seems pretty nice as long as you have an open mind.
Dr. Newman is an excellent teacher, and one of the best that you can get for the "Foundations" Biology courses. All of the foundations classes are hard, but her lectures are clear and she is very clear about what she wants you to know. You have to work for your grade, but I think that she's a great teacher. Very under-appreciated.
I'll be honest. Newman is a ****. She's probably got one of the worst personalities in existence. She's a terrible human being and I would hate my life if she was my mother. *BUT* she is a wonderful teacher. She is extremely clear, comprehensive, and straightforward. If you want to learn bio, take her, but be prepared.
Here's the deal, she claims to be protecting against "rote memorization" which is fine, but the end result is, she doesn't test based on what she has lectured OR what is in the text. Some questions are based on NEITHER, which isnt fair. It's like connect the dots, but only a bio enthusiast will suceed, not someone who simply needs the class.
Very good teacher. Took bio150 with Roberts last semester and failed to even score above a 60 on one test. Aced every test with newman so far. hard overall course no matter the teacher. she needs to go on what not to wear though.
Dr Newman does an excellent job of teaching and getting point across. Interesting lectures. But her tests are so so very hard, and pretty unfair. Other than that complaint, I really loved her as a teacher.
Lectures are very interesting. However her tests are very difficult. She harms on minor details and have a lot of application questions. Would be a better teacher if she didnt have the attitude
Newman is an excellent teacher with a lot of enthusiasm and intellect. Her notes were very clear and she made great use of examples. Now if only she based her tests off of her notes/the book. Her tests questions can come out of the blue and she expects you to be a Biology genius. Oh and her attitude sucks.
well ended up getting a d in the class. absolutely no curve. shes an excellent teacher. but after retaking bio and comparing the tests ive taken newman's are by far way more difficult. don't ask a question unless you expect her to put you down. take a different teacher. definately. stupid clicker points actually graded for correctness
She's actually a great lecturer and a very good teacher. Lectures are information packed and you will learn A LOT. Tests are very hard and some questions are just meant to be tricky. Read the book to back up what's taught in lecture because she moves fast
The first day of class Dr. Newman stated that she has been known as the most difficult Bio professor in Pitt's history. I totally agree. Exams are very difficult but as long as you score above the class avg you will be fine bc she curves grades at the end of the semester based on the class avg. Outstanding lecturer and you will learn so much.
Expect to study lots or take a low grade.
Excessive use of analogies, sometimes to the point where it confuses more than helps. Very enthusiastic. Has an attitude, but the majority of her comments are sarcastic. Tests are difficult but not immpossible by any scheme. Be prepared to do work.
Love this class and love Dr. Newman. The only "attitude" she has is passion for helping students. She makes fun of herself in lecture and invites students to ask questions. Wish she taught 160!
Don't believe the negative stuff. I went to see her and she was so nice!
Not an easy class, but not super hard either. A lot of memorization. She does have a passion for teaching, and does a good job at it, but possesses a bit of a superiority complex. Can be somewhat condescending, at times treating the class like children. Finds her own ideas to be fascinating and almost never faulty.
Dr. Newman was one of the best professors I've had. She is an excellent teacher and makes sure you really understand the information. If you pay attention in lecture and read the book you'll do fine. She has a good sense of humor and keeps lecture interesting.
Great instructor! She makes great use of examples to clarify and is extremely approachable. She really makes an effort to connect science to everyday life and engage her students.
Great teacher. Uses great down to earth analogies Don't believe the stuff you hear about unapproachable. If you visit her office, she is willing to drop what she is doing to help, but you have to make the effort.
Very condescending. Talked down to the entire class on the first day, telling us that a good amount would fail her class. Unless your questions are extremely specific and thought out, don't bother going for help, because she won't fully answer questions she doesn't feel are worthy of her time. Lectures were decent but tests were extremely tricky.
She is very friendly and approachable outside of class. In class, however, she doesn't really give good answers to questions. Her class is hard. You MUST read the book and study a lot. Wording on questions can be tricky but she will let you challenge an answer if you think you are right. I would recommend her but be prepared to work HARD.
Why can't she just type her words on PowerPoint file to make them easy to take notes!? You have to write down fast enough for the notes. and the exam is...nightmare!
The class really isn't hard as long as you read the book and focus on the things she emphasizes in lecture. Her tests are extremely fair and straight forward. She's not the most pleasant person in class, but in all, the class isn't as difficult as other bio 1 teachers. I would recommend, but, like any bio class, be prepared to put in a lot of work.
I hear a lot of bad things about Newman's class, but I didn't think it was that bad. She teaches the material very well. She definitely knows what she is talking about. Tests are challenging but that is to be expected.
Terrible teacher. She writes her own questions, to trick. It's all a mind game for her to see how hard she can make it. It's as if she just wants to fail her entire class. Don't bother taking her class, your better off with another professor - she's terrible
Nothing she teaches in her class ever ends up on the test. Nothing in the book ends up on the test. Your on your own to figure it out. She tries to trick you - don't take her if you don't have to
The class is hard & the tests have difficult and deceiving questions. It's a weed-out foundational class, that's the way it is. What frustrated me is that my AP Bio notes from high school prepared me for exams better than my lecture notes. I'd have been in trouble without prior biology knowledge.
Newman is the best for biowriting! Helpful every step of the way, makes it clear what you have to do to make the grade!
Three words. Take Bledsoe instead. Newman is tough, condescending, and overall a nasty dude from personal experience (maybe she's nice, but I have never seen her be that way yet). Study the book. Study the notes. A LOT. Seriously, STUDY. RIGHT NOW.
Her tests are insane and tricky. Each test covers alot material and they're very tricky. I took AP Bio and I did Okay but I didn't do well in her class. Avoid taking her class if you can.
Don't let the other ratings scare you away. I really liked her! i ended up getting a B, but it did take a LOT of work. but thats any bio150 class, not just newman. I am taking her again next semester and i know a lot of other people who are too. You can tell the passion she has for teaching and the material. I would recommend her
Let this review and the other reviews scare you away from this aweful professor. I put a ridiculous amount of time reading the book taking notes attending lectures and recitation and only ended up with a B. No curve. Condescending attitude in every lecture. Her exams are mind games aimed at tricking you. I'm not a dumb, slack-off student either.
Not the nicest professor I've ever had, but her lectures are crystal clear. If you read the book before lecture, it makes even more sense. She doesn't mince words and knows her material like the back of her hand. I would recommend her just for the sake that she is a great lecturer.
Worst professor ever! Lectures are pointless, lots of pictures that she just talks about which make it difficult to take notes. I pulled off a C on all the exams which are very challenging, but the final is impossible. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Newman is a very hard teacher, but she is very clear on what material will be on the test. I ended up with a B+ in the class. It is harder because she makes you UNDERSTAND the material rather than just memorize facts. She can be a tad rude, but it is to make it fair for everyone. Go to office hours and she will help you out
Worst professor I've ever had by far. I had Roberts for Bio 1, and although she was difficult, her tests were fair in that if you studied you could pass them. This is not that case with Newmann, as it all comes down to trick questions. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Professor Newman is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and loves to see her students get enthusiastic about the material, also. However, I do not recommend her because her tests seemed very unfair to me. I studied a ton for her tests, but her questions are very ambiguous and there always seemed to be two answers to every question.
i had her for bio 2 after having roberts for bio 1. I think she is terrible and has no idea how to write tests. Her questions are extremely ambiguous and she will not listen to arguments about her questions. I found her completely not helpful and I'm glad i will never have to take her again.
Hard but fair. better than other bio profs. Seems strict in lecture but much nicer if you go to office hours. Tests were challenging but there is a chance to argue your point. MUST go to class, makes questions from things she says in lecture. Hard to take notes because she goes really fast. Must UNDERSTAND for tests, not just memorize.
tough teacher, but office hours are definitely helpful. tests are hard--you need to really know the material and not just memorize from the book. recitations are important and it's basically manditory because of the clicker points. knows what she's talking about.
Whatever you do, do not take Newman. She is a vindictive and sadistic woman who wants to fail everyone. Her tests are made in such a way that it is impossible to pass unless you have known this material all of your life. Like the guy that sells tshirts on the corner of Forbes and Bigelow, said, either you know bio or you don't, simple as that.
I decided to retake the class in the summer session with Newman. It was, by far, the worst decision I have ever made. Her lectures seem to make perfect sense but her test questions make no sense. I ended up with a D even though I devoted nearly every second I had to studying and reading. DO NOT TAKE. EVER.
I was terrified of Newman going in after all I had heard, but she was great. You have to go to lecture and pay attention, and you have to REALLY study the book, but if you put in the effort you'll do fine. Read her test questions REALLY slowly.
she's a nice lady, and tries to make things understandable, but the time commitment required for a good grade is unreal and the tests are difficult. swan dive off the cathedral before you take this class
She's very nice outside of class but when you try to challenge anything she says she gets mad and ignores your question. Her test questions are very hard and are not like the things you go over in class.
great teacher. everyone says her tests are impossible, but if you know the basics of the material and know how to think and apply it, you'll do fine.
This lady knows her stuff well but she has the most unbelievably crapy attitude.. her lectures are good but she takes absolutely no time or effort when creating the answers to her exams.. bottom line she is a crazy lonely individual that hates bio 1 shes been in probation for teaching both subjects for various reasons... CRAZZYY MUST AVOIDmy gpa3.6
Newman has potential to be a good teacher, but relishes on the fact that this course is designed to weed students out and reaffirms this through tests. She herself has admitted that her goal is not to pass the majority of the class with a C, but rather have only 50% of the class have a C or higher. Her tests have inconsistently worded questions.
Dr. Newman is a great instructor. However, Writing in the Bio requires soooo much time and effort no matter who your instructor is. I learned a lot in this course but would recommend taking a different W course.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. She is a very decent professor but seemingly does not want students to succeed. Her tests are challenging, but past the point of fair. She is very condescending if you ask questions in recitation. Very unenjoyable class due to the fact that you worry about your grade because of the tests.
While I liked her in one-on-one conversations in recitation, in lecture I felt my intelligence was being insulted by the way she addressed the class; her test questions were unnecessarily confusing, and her explanations of the material weren't great in the first place. Also switches slides too fast, but they're online. READ THE BOOK.
She's a great lecturer, but her exams are unfair. It's a weed out class, but I'm pretty sure she fails more kids than she needs to. She can be intimidating as well so it can be tough getting yourself to go to her office hours.
she takes her job of ruining the dreams of students very seriously.
successful GPA ruin-er, and she's very proud of it too.
she is very unclear about what will be on exams. you study all the wrong things. impossible to get a good grade
truly an awful teacher. for anyone "picking your poison" between her and roberts, PICK ROBERTS. i've had them both, trust me. newman teaches extremely poorly, has no interest in how her students perform and makes up test questions that have the most ridiculous wording and turn simple and understandable concepts into something way difficult. avoid.
Newman treats her class like a bunch of kindergartners when really half the class knows more about the subject than she does. she's only out to ruin grades, she is truly a terrible educator and the tests are as good as guessing which of the two or three right answers is the one she wants. don't take her, one of the worst overall professors at pitt
When a student asks a question in class, she seems to take it as a personal insult and responds with a convoluted defense about why she is right; however, when a student uses her type of logic to explain an answer he/she chose for a different question, Dr. Newman says they are wrong and there is no proof for what they said. Not a good experience.
Great lecturer, straightforward information. Tests are rough, with several answers that are right, but one is more right than the others. An A is almost impossible but with hard work and a bit of luck you can recieve a B or B+
She is an amazing lecturer. Her explains and ways of thinking are easy to understand and down to earth. However when it comes to test time she gives you 45 in depth Q's in 45mins. I managed a C with a decent amount of work but with hard work a B/B+ is possible. Also she has clicker Q's which is her way of making you go to lecture and recitation.
I dropped from honors bio1 1st semester to Newman's bio2 2nd semester, and it was the biggest mistake I could have made. Questions on tests are practically designed to trick you. With multiple all-nighters and weeks of preparation for tests, I was able to pull of a B, but if you're premed/prevet and need an A like I do, do NOT take Newman.
Save yourself the trouble and avoid her. I had her for Bio 1 as well, and it just gets worse as the material gets harder. Trust me, save yourself the pain and rearrange to schedule to avoid her. Never been so frustrated with a course in my life
She sometimes says she wants to help us, but her actions are inconsistent. Tests are deliberately tricky and rough overall. Does not seem to like answering students' questions. Lec and rec are mandatory bc of clicker Qs and she tests outside material as well as from the book. I would say her lectures are straighforward but hard to keep up with.
Newman is very unorganized. She uses supplements more than the actual book and her tests are unfair. Worst class I have ever taken and I love biology
I'm not going to lie, Newman is a tough professor and her exams are really tricky. No matter how hard you study, there will be a few exam questions that still stump you. However, I have never learned so much in a course and if you are really struggling, Newman's ALWAYS willing to help you during office hours. I would strongly recommend taking her!
I personally do not know where all the negative reviews are coming from. She is a wonderful professor!!! I took her during summer session, and I always felt that she was very willing to answer all of our questions and she explained concepts EXTREMELY thoroughly. Her tests make you THINK,but they're completely doable. I highly recommend.
As a fellow student, I beg you: don't take her class! Her lectures don't help you at all for studying for exams (which are absurdly hard for an entry-level bio course). If you have your face in the bio textbook all day, you might have a shot at an A. Maybe.
I am telling you this because I do not want you guys to go through what I went through. Do not take her. She is not a good professor at all. She only teaches you the basics, but tests you on the details of everything. I studied so hard, and only ended up with a C. Unless you have your nose in the book 24/7, you won't do well. She is also not nice.
For Biosc 1010 (online), Newman is not bad at all. She is an extremely tough grader but is fair. You have to make sure all your drafts are written like final drafts, this means showing evidence and developing your main points. In all do as she says and you'll be fine.
actualy the reason i am no longer a bio major is becaus eshe turned me off to the topic so stronly. avoid
awful.
Very good lecturer and provides plenty of useful information in class if you can keep up. She moves very fast and is a tough tester. Keep an open mind going into the class and STUDY!
She gets a bad rap because she is really difficult and her tests are extremely tough; however, she knows what she's talking about, she uses great examples that help you remember concepts, and she pushes you to actually learn and not just memorize stuff. If you are a pre-med major, I recommend you at least try taking her for one class to try it.
Newman basically ruined my Freshmen year. 275 students on day one, 215 by the second test. Generally describes info then expects you to know the specifics. DO NOT take her! Especially as a Freshmen coming into your first semester.
Pretty much the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. Test are on lectures because apparently she knows more than the book (so she says). Test questions don't make a bit of sense. Going to her office hours were completely useless to me because she never actually answered my questions. Just don't take her!
Incredibly hard class and she's just not worthy of teaching anything related to bio. This woman had a 2.5 gpa in college. Why let her teach kids who are trying to be doctors? If you have to take her I suggest reading every chapter, study a week in advance for tests and do all the mastering bio. Getting a B is certainly possible if you REALLY care.
Unless you wish to spend every single waking moment studying biology, do not expect to get an A from Newman. Her exam questions are ridiculously hard in comparison to other professors of the same course and she leaves no room to get points outside of exams. Not only is the class difficult, but her attitude is very condescending. Wouldn't recommend.
She is like a bad drug, JUST SAY NO. The only enjoyment that I had with this class was betting on which embroidered capri suit she would wear that day. If you are looking to get a high GPA, do not take her.
Her tests don't go along with her lessons, just don't take her class!
This class requires a lot of time and work if you want a good grade. Attending every lecture and recitation is a must! Some days Newman is very helpful, but usually this is not the case. Most of the questions are application. Get another teacher if you can. If not, she's not the worst teacher in the world. I managed an A- with many hours studying.
A very difficult teacher! Very rude and unhelpful! If you can get out of her class, but watch what you switch into there are other awful teachers out there as well for this course! If you are stuck prepare to study your life away. Attendance at lecture and recitation is required! With tons of hours of studying I managed to get a B-.
She has one way of explaining every concept and tends to just repeat that over and over, and if that way doesn't work for you you're in trouble. She REALLY is trying to help her students though, but she's very forceful and often that hurts more than it helps. Her tests are incredibly hard, and often the right answer seems arbitrary.
A lot of people don't like her and she's definitely tougher on Bio 1 students than Bio 2. For Bio 1 she's probably the best option though. A lot of work though.
I really enjoyed Newman. She was tough, but she taught you how to study well! I won't lie, you do need to study and read the text. However, I feel she breaks down the concepts into easy to understand terms and analogies during lecture! I would recommend definitely.
It's pretty tough to listen to her in lecture. She goes off on tangents and is generally hard to follow. Her lecture notes jump around a lot and are unorganized. Her exams are more designed to test your ability to solve riddles than apply your knowledge
Terrible. Avoid at all costs. You can know the material inside and out, but if you don't think like her, you will fail the tests (the only grades).
After taking Dr. Bledsoe for Bio 2 I have a new found appreciation for her. Even though she is not very nice, she explains things so much clearly and more basically. Her figures really help. She is a much more effective teacher.
She was pretty clear in lecture in explaining different concepts, and would answer everyone's questions. Some of her exam questions (especially those about ecology) were tricky. She emphasizes the case studies covered in lecture and recitation a lot, so be sure to read them. Not as bad (for Bio 2, at least) as everyone says she is.
Her exams are incredibly difficult. I would go in to an exam almost positive I knew all the material and fail the exam. Some of her questions I wasn't even sure what she was asking. Unless this is your only difficult class for a semester, I wouldn't suggest her. Studying for her class is extremely time consuming and sometimes it still doesn't help.
Aside from her being a lot more friendly over the summer, the complaints are about the same. She will go out of her way to tell you to NOT study certain things and they will squirm their way onto exams anyway. You'll never be able to figure out her test-writing methods and you'll lose your enthusiasm for biology in the process. Try to avoid.
Newman drops all the low performers of her tests so that the bell curve will return to a 75% average and thus never curves a test. Do whatever you can to get out of her class. She's a pre-med dream killer.
Dr. Newman's tests are very hard and almost all of your grade is determined by exams and the final, but she is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are enjoyable and her expectations are clear. She is incredibly helpful in office hours. If you want an easy A, take another teacher. If you want an interesting class and to learn biology, take Dr. Newman
Dr. Newman is in my opinon a poor teacher. Im not saying this in bitterness from a poor grade as I got an A but that is only because of my high school knowledge. That being said the bio department at Pitt is sub-par. Power through and good luck. Use the TA's
Jaclyn Newman is a horrible woman who talked degradingly every one of her students and is stubborn to the point that there is no hope to receive the grade that you want. That being said, she does present the material in an appealing fashion that kept my interest during class. I would not recommend her for anyone who ever desires to ask questions.
Newman is the equivalent of Satan. Hates her kids, sometimes verbally attacks students to the point of withdrawal. TA's know nothing and Newman praises them like gods. DO NOT TAKE NEWMAN. Only good thing about class is guessing which scrub suit she'll wear today. AVOID.
Hope this will help anyone who is remotely considering Newman, do NOT take her. Her tests seem far from what you learned in class. I studied more for this class than i ever have before and still did bad.
If you take Newman expect to FAIL. Never once in college I have struggled in a class until now. She EXPECTS you to spend you whole day studying bio...which is something most don't have time for. Her TA's keep pumping her tires practically. She also wears the same stuff everyday just in a different color
The tests, which get progressively harder throughout the course, are more or less a testament to your luck rather than your knowledge. You have to ask yourself during a test "Okay, what does she want me to know? What would she think is correct?"... and then maybe you'll get a C or B. Maybe. Plan on studying a lot. Also, email responses are sassy af
ESPECIALLY if you are not a bio major, AVOID NEWMAN AT ALL COSTS. It's a weeding out class for Bio majors so if your school requires a bio course, take it with ANYONE else. Tests are riddles, & she doesn't like to answer questions she doesn't find 'worthy'. I wish I could go back in time before the F...
Instead of actually helping you, she encourages you to retake the class (even if you're doing well?). She is defensive, accusatory, and mean spirited. I did well in the class, but she seemed to enjoy people's failures, and was upset when people did well.
Worst teacher I've ever had. She expects you to spend your whole time outside of class just studying biology religiously. I've learned more about Bio in my lab than in her in class in general. Have fun taking notes as she speeds right on through giving you barely anytime to write then down. Do yourself a favor don't take her!
Worst professor. If you read the text book, take amazing lecture notes (which you won't considering she blows right by the material) and study every other paper she's given you, you'll get a C every time. Anything higher than a C is pure luck. Save yourself the trouble and your GPA and don't take her.
Extremely disorganized. Lectures are jumbled and confusing with a lot of rapid back and forth between slides. The immunology unit was particularly bad, it was clear that she did not understand the material. Tests require way more detail than she gives in class. There is no chance to practice the kind of problem-solving she expects on exams. AVOID.
Dr. Newman is missing the mark when it comes to her teaching approach. I found that I would dread waking up to go to her lecture because despite the effort I would put in, no key concepts would be on the test. At some point, I think she needs to realize that you can be a good teacher without ruining students chances of getting into grad school
Absolutely horrible. When I was choosing my professors for my first college semester, I looked over her terrible ratings. I regret this decision to this day; I have absolutely NOTHING nice to say about her. She is self-centered, unfair, and impossible to please. Her tests are confusing and ridiculous. Stay away.
Dr. Newman's lectures are clear and easy to follow if you are familiar with the material. She likes to speed through material pretty quickly to get it all done. Her tests are composed of easy and difficult questions that trip a lot of students up. Doing well on the exams is difficult if you don't have previous knowledge and partially luck based.
Absolutely awful. Lectures are disorganized to the point of being pointless and what's on her ridiculously difficult tests is completely random. She expects you to devote every waking moment to her class and that still isn't enough. Especially if you are planning on grad school, DO NOT TAKE NEWMAN.
Would not recommend this woman to my worst enemy. Each lecture is rife with long-winded analogies (usually about desserts) that barely skim the surface of complex concepts she expects you to understand on exams. If you're a masochist and decide to take her course, read your textbook religiously and study with your peers. Good luck.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. No matter how hard you study you will not succeed on her exams. I had no previous biology background and I worked my butt off and it did not show. She does not care about her students. She even said she doesnt care how hard we work and in order to pass her class you have be a good, lucky guesser.
By far the WORST teacher I've ever had! You will fail her class if you take her. Taking notes are USELESS as that material isn't really on the test. The only thing worth wild with class is if she'll wear the same clothes but only in a different color. Don't take her!!!
Had her last year for Bio 1 - still the worst professor I have had in college. Degrading, unhelpful woman. Deliberately makes exams extremely ambiguous. Majority of final grades will fall at or around a C because of her grading system. Avoid at all costs.
Unhelpful, condescending, and incredibly difficult. Quite often refutes the text book and offers her own explanation. Avoid for bio 1! Pre-med,pre-pharm,pre-vet dream killer.
Incredibly confusing with what she expects. Often confuses herself with concepts she is teaching and expects you to learn incorrect information to "correctly" answer her test questions. Although microbio is really interesting, I found this to be a bio I review with some random microbe facts. I'd avoid if possible.
I'm begging you-do not take this class. What are the tests on you may ask? Not what's in the book or is taught. You are setting yourself up for failure by taking her. Read the book, attended almost every lecture, went to TA reviews-still didn't pass the class. She teaches at you like you're an elementary school student then tests like you're an Ivy.
SHE'S NOT THAT BAD! Yes it is a hard course, yes her tests are hard. I worked fairly hard and I still got a C even though I almost failed every test. If you are willing to work hard you will do well. I deliberately took her again because SHE. IS. NOT. THAT. BAD!!!!
People who say that she is awful were probably looking for an easy A... and no matter who you look for in a foundations teacher, it isn't going to happen. The class is challenging. The exams are challenging. If you study (and seriously not just read the book and go to class), you can do well. It comes down to what you put into it... fact.
She is condescending & seems annoyed when you ask her questions, and her lectures are a bit confusing. But, her tests are very straightforward and you can do well on them as long as you study & do the mastering bio & practice tests! Compared to Donovan, she's not as nice but her tests are MUCH better. Definitely worth taking over other bio 1 profs!
Professor Newman was an incredibly discouraging teacher to have for biology 1, especially as a freshman pre-med. She is condescending and sarcastic in her lectures, exams are unfair & she does not negotiate on misleading questions. I wish I could go back and retake the course with a professor who cared about her students. Recommend to avoid her.
She's overall a pretty engaging teacher and I don't think I've ever gotten severely bored in her class. However, the problem is with her tests. The wording of some of the questions and answers are misleading. Also she does not upload most of her lectures online, or put up practice exams. Prepare to learn random things and take lots of notes.
For writing in the bio sciences she was a fairly hard grader at first. She grades easier at the end to make it seem like the papers improved drastically (my opinion). I found this class REALLY helpful, and Dr. N was really easy to talk to and approachable. She really cared about this subject. If you want to become a better writer take this class.
Dr. Newman was amazing at teaching introductory bio 1 and 2. She explained concepts clearly, she regularly had inventive and engaging in-classrecitation exercises, and she was always helpful if one sought out her advice. The only criticism I would levy was that many of her exam questions were focused on the unimportant minutiae of topics covered.
Difficult class but if you put the work in and really ask for help, you'll get through. It's an intro bio course and for a lot of people it's one of their first classes at Pitt - it's made to be a premed weed out so just don't give up!
