She is an ok teacher. Didn't really learn anything from her. Couldn't understand her because of her accents. Also she imposes her belief on her students which isn't very professional.
She's very fair. Only few essays and no final exam. Easy to get an A if you are good in writing essays.

Prof Thomas-Val is very intelligent and will expand the way you think. Her exams are somewhat difficult but if you've done your readings you'll be just fine. Take this class and learn a lot not only about the subject but also about life in general. Excellent teacher and very caring person.

Very intelligent and runs a very structured learning environment. Dr.Thomas-Val is a challenging and demanding teacher,which can be good for Critical Thinking. She is very opinionated, which can rub people the wrong way if taken personally,I think this is meant to help you sharpen your critical thinking skills. Assignments were frequently unclear
Good person, and very smart, but I found her class very difficult. She leads great discussions, but does not speak very much about how to actually write papers. My GPA is high, and I am almost positive I got a C in her class trying my hardest. Consider before taking this class.
Dr. Thomas Val is a very intellegent teacher! she is really smart she has a PH.D!! and i think because of that she turns out to be a really hard teacher! her class was really cool i learned a lot of things but she doesnt really teach how to write a good paper she expects you to already know what your doing, be ready to work your butt off!

Very difficult!!! Frequent quizzes are quite tough. Does not explain things well. Nice lady, but that's it! They really need to get another teacher to teach this class!!!!!
Welcome to college: she will require you to think and apply what you are learning; is'nt that what college is about? I enjoyed every moment of my Advanced Comp class with her.
This is one of the WORST teacher you could take. She lectures on materials & expects you to get it like that! She doesn't give you a grade printout, so u don't know if you're failing until its too late to drop. The majority of the class failed. Find another teacher at another school because you'll be in HELL all semester long if you take her!!
Her class is not enjoyable. She does not teach the class how to write better papers. When i need her help, she does not have the time. She is always unorganized and busy in her office. She only told me "think about it again, I can't help u that much" Overall in her class, i got a C. thank to my english tutors.

She was my worst nightmare. Study, go to class every day. dosn't matter. To discribe her would be misery. She would not teach the course and If you ask her any questions, she will tell you to read your book. You will have nightmares about her and her class AND YOU WILL FAIL. WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!! She is very unorganized and does not talk about anything that has to do wit english. She just gave our class one lecture throughtout the whole semester about how to head an essay. Then after that, she would assign in-class essays that were due like 4 weeks from the given date. I would not recommend to take her. she is just weird...

This class is hard enough to start with, because there is so much material to learn. She is not clear on what you should know in her lectures. Her lectures are basically reading out of the book. It is true that when you ask a question she'll think about it and then say "umm, look it up in your book." I re-took it at ARC with a great teacher.

Thomas-Val can teach 49 but she doesn't really go into explaining or teaching Engwr40 very well. All she does is make us read the book and use the book's techniques into our writing. I really don't think I've learned anything from her Engwr40 class. Overall, she is a good professor, funny sometimes.

Thomas-val is a very nice teacher. Her class is super easy. Her teaching is somewhat questionable, and she usually goes off topic. Val always seems to be in a jolly mood, which isn't necessarily bad, but she does not accomplish much with her teachings.
Mrs Thomas-Val is a gret person. She has a great personality and is very fun. However, with English being my worst subject I didn't find her very helpful. We really never used the text but maybe 3 times and her explainations on the board were questionable. I would have perfered less music and more academics.
This teacher is NOT productive at all! She tries to stick her religious beliefs down our throats and if we don't agree she is VERY rude and VERY demeaning. Doesn't listen to student opinion without butting it down mercilessly. Stay away. Bad teacher. Scatterbrain. Forgetful. She claims to be happy but is sad inside.
I agree, she is not a nice person. She has a horrible totalitarian personality. Can't say anything without getting your head chewed off with her illogical arguments. I consider myself intelligent but had no desire to excel in her class. THAT is a very bad sign. A good teacher will make you want to be better.
She's an interesting person, but she's very opinionated, and doesn't seem to even try to understand your perspective if you disagree with her in a discussion. But the class isn't too difficult: 5 quizzes, a presentation, a paper, and the final, each worth 1/4 of your grade. In the class I didn't learn that much but I was rarely bored.

Horrible. She assigns homework from the book but you don't go over it in class so you never know if you are doing it right. When you ask what they quizzes will be like she just tells you that you have to know everything that you have read and the lecture notes. That does not help at all. She is offensive and rude and doesn't explain things clearly.
Strongly recommend NOT taking this professor for any course.She is unorganized, vague with assignments & specific with expectations,& also feels the need to bring religion into every lecture.I didn't learn anything I didn't already know &, as a future Eng teacher I found her a disgrace to the subject.Don't waste your time or money on this teacher.
Doesn't follow syllabus, gives bad grades without explaining why. Cancels a lot of class We had 4 weeks with only a 10 min conference, was gone day befor final. I dont think she knows how to lecture. Rude to the point of being mean. Don't bother showing up to office hours she'll shoo you away. very opinionated and religious. AGREE WITH HER OR FAIL.
Very unorganized, pushy with her beliefs, terrible lectures. Horrible writing assignments, 4-6 pages on weather a funeral service or memorial service is better...really? DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
I absolutely LOVE writing and this teacher was AWFUL! I really liked her as a person, but the only homework she assigns is essays and she doesn't explain them well AT ALL; her method of teaching is letting you get a bad grade and then telling you how you should have done it AFTER the fact. Not recommended.
She decides what grade you will have at first sight of you. Does not give participation points. Would prefer her students to listen to the sounds of her voice only. Pretencious, RUDE, impossible, judgemental and obnoxious. Acts like she's teaching at Stanford. No respect for students unless your opionion is her opionion. Do NOT waste your time!
i encourage past students to complain to the dean about this professor. she will assign points randomly. will not explain anything logically. her beliefs are at the core of her attitude problem. if you argue with her, you're endangering your grade. if there is any way at all to avoid taking this horrible person and professor, make sure you do it.
Do not take this professor! Her religion dictates how she grades. Her grading is a joke. She is zealous and biased with no realization of either.

I had read all the comments about her on this website...However it was the only class that fit my schedule. So I tried to go into the class with a positive attitude. That didn't last long. She is soooo unclear and isn't aware of how hypocritical she is. She definitely does not like anyone that has a different opinion. I would never take her again!
I did not believe anyone on here and I thought they were sniveling children and then I took her. Awful, sanctimonious, and uses reasoning to explain her rotten heart. I received a good grade and still plan on going to the Dean. She tells her students that she is tenured and therefore immune to the institution. Avoid her or shut-up and nod yes!
This person is useless and should not be teaching. She is only there to collect a paycheck. She sat at her desk and read emails most of the time. She was unable to explain basic points of English composition with any clarity. She gave no backup or justification in her grading. Her superior attitude prevents her from understanding her students
Easily the worst class I've taken at SCC. Tests have nothing to do with what is done in class and the class touched on almost nothing from the period. Do not take class at all costs.
She nice,but she hardly teach.Most of the time she excepts you to already know materials that you havent cover.Also,she grades EngWr50 students as thought they're in a EngWR300 class.Worst,she requires all her students to paid the online course and doesnt and even view it or include the work from there into the final grade.Dont buy the online cours
I took her class Spring 09 and although most of my classmates didn't like her, I personally did. She is to the point and has a different humor. We used the book nearly every class period, homework was very important, so is attendance. I'd say that as long as you put in some effort, pay attention and do the homework, passing shouldn't be an issue.
She is very nice and interesting. However, as a teacher she is quite strict and opinionated with her own bit of sass. You WILL need the book, her lectures hold minimal information and you're wise to consider the way she thinks of things when addressing literature. She may not appear so, but as long as you communicate with her she is understanding.
She is a very easily distracted person and ventures off topic a lot. She can be really hard to hear at times because she starts talking and gradually gets quieter so you can barely hear what she says. Her class is completely unorganized and irritating.

Took her for ENGWR 40 in Spring 2012. Easy to talk to and very funny at times, but worst professor I had ever had before. The ways she teach are very confusing and unorganized. I wouldn't recommended her to anyone that is a first year student in college.
I took her class a few years ago. I am now teaching ESL, and I absolutely would not be able to do my job if it were not for her. Vey hard class. Lots of work. Take a lot of notes and don't skip meetings.
She's strict on attendance. As long as you work hard, you will pass the class. Though, you have to pay attention to every detail. Otherwise you'll just fail. Make sure you get the textbooks she assigns you to! It's mainly used every class session. I liked how she helped me understand more about writing. She's very helpful
grades essays very easy, quizzes are pretty easy, lectures are killer tho. easy to pass if u complete the online hw and do good on the essays. shes not as bad as the reviews say-dunno why she gets all this hate.
I have never gotten a C in an English class before. I have a 3.8 GPA currently. She gets off topic in class and if you ask her to get back on topic she gets upset. She is unwilling to repeat herself if you don't understand or you couldn't hear her. This is terrible for hard of hearing students like myself. She quizzes on things not discussed.
Taking her class right now. She was very confusing at orientation by not being able to explain what programs we were supposed to use. She has a really thick accent which makes you wonder why she became an English professor... Her acronyms on her syllabus are confusing and you have to read what she writes a few times to really understand her writing
I am taking this class right now online, and I have to say, for an all online class she is hard to get a hold of. Even when she does finally answer your emails, she doesn't always answer your question. I do not think she understands what I am asking half the time. Only take this class if you are okay with never asking questions.
ENG302 is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Dr. Thomas-Val is an AMAZING instructor and I am so happy I am taking her class. The class is challenging but Dr. Thomas-Val knows her stuff so If you are unclear about anything send her an email and she'll give you clarification. Wonderful class, excellent Professor!
The most rigorous class I've ever taken. So many papers and a tough grader. She grades mostly on how you format your paper and grammar instead of the content in your paper. It was a struggle to get a passing grade and I could not wait for this class to be over. Would never take another one of her classes. She's nice but no.

Her class is 50/50. She requires one novel and does not stress enough to read it all bc small details is what she usually puts on her quizzes. The lectures go off subject but bare with her as information is much needed. Essays are very hard but her great feedback makes you learn from mistakes. She is funny too!

She gave little effort to explain things out for her student, she gets annoyed when we ask too many questions. Very harsh on grading essay, not a good professor at all. Would never take this teacher ever again.

I had ENGWR302 online over summer. Of course it was a hard class, that was to be expected. Thomas-Val seems like a wonderful woman, but she was way too unorganized. She required an online textbook for the class, but ordered the wrong access cards for the student store and would get canvas due dates wrong. Also very opinionated. Hard to keep up.
Worst Professor ever taken. It was suppossed to be a normal GE class but it turned out to be the worst class ever taken. She is a hard grader and doesn't gives good feedback.

Boring class. Unorganized plan. She just simply read from the book. No rubric for any essay. Basically just about grammar and sentence structure. Heavy grader. You can learn something about citation and grammar. Otherwise, theres nothing about how to write an essay. Dont be surprise if you get a D after all the hard work and no good feedback.
Even though I met some friends in this class, it was honestly a waste of time. The professor is nice at times, but most of the time, she is highly opinionated, and I didn't agree with her harsh opinions a majority of the time. The class was very boring and bland and she was a very harsh grader. There was only 5 students out of 30 left by the end.

I tend to lose a lot of papers for assignments, she doesn't believe in using canvas.... even to just have the essay assignments so that if someone missed class they can get the prompt

Her class was hard, and she definitely made us work for it. Her feedback was vague and I could never really work off it. She assigns a lot of reading (which was not a problem) but would not give you full credit on discussion posts.
These reviews about Thomas-Val are misleading. She is a great teacher you just have to communicate with her and get to know her as she also gets to know you so that she can help you in the best way possible. She has you read one book (which you can rent but dont have to actually read since we read most of it in class), textbook, and 3 essays.
Do not take one of her classes. She gives papers back with a no feedback rule. How are we supposed to learn from our mistakes? She graded one of my essays wrong because I had to sit with her for 10 minutes going over my grade and she had to change things she missed.

This class was strange. Not much work, were were only 5 discussion board posts, one paper a midterm (write a poem) and a final that I have not taken yet but miss anything and your grade will suffer.. I did not learn much from her lectures and lacked direction all semester. I do have an A as of now but will see after the final. She is nice though.
Had no class zoom meetings. Self-taught. She doesn't answer questions clearly and says she already talked about it, but in an unclear way/has not. Did a timed essay: considered a quiz, wasn't reasonable for time and grade. Will NOT give any extra credit other than the pilot modules. Make sure to study all readings! Recommend another professor tbh.
This class was rough... the work was very confusing and you don't get a lot of flexibility.
