Really enthusiastic! Grades pretty hard but gives chance to make up points. Hates if you leave during lecture.
He is new this semester, but hes a great teacher, funny, and relates to us. He gives out handouts, helps a lot, and gives back points for essays!I recommend his class, but he does grade hard on essays. Is willing to help students in need!
Beckham is super helpful. He grades really hard, so if you want an easy A this class isn't for you. he helped me become a better writer his outline handouts were really helpful. My only complaint; the topics for the essays were boring.
Professor.Beckham deeply does care about his students. However, his method in grading essays is unnecessarily rough and even hurtful when you work so hard to make it right(I'm talking hours). His method is not wrong, but there is more to writing essays than having logical perfection. I look at my fellow students and think that many deserve better.
Beckham is a great teacher and definitely make his class worth going to. Extremely difficult grader. Spent so much time seeing different tutors and proofreaders and really tried hard but received a B. Follow his instruction on every paper exactly. 4 home essays 1 in class.
Beckman is a tough grader, but he also really tries to help us and wants us to do well. He's funny which kept me interested and made class not so boring. I learned a lot but spent hours outside of class working on the papers. The research paper...ugh...thank god that's over.
I am currently in this class and it is early but he makes it very entertaining. He is willing to help you when you need it and will reply to emails quickly, even over the weekend. I highly recommend.
Great teacher, just listen to what he asks of you and do it and you'll be fine.
awesome teacher, he makes learning English fun. constantly makes jokes and uses "slang" words to help students better understand assignments and curriculum.
He makes English fun. He explains the lesson using "slang" words and he makes it really relatable
Great professor! I learned a lot from him. Pay attention a read everything he puts out and you will do will. Will take his class again.
Awesome professor!
Very inspiring instructor. He has a lot to teach about life as well as English composition if you can tolerate a daily barrage of corny jokes.
This class was the first thing on a Monday morning for me and was a perfect wake up. Dr. Beckham knows his stuff and makes class fun to go to. I definitely recommend taking this class if you can get in. Make sure to follow directions when given the prompt, or you will receive a "C" at best!
He is so funny!! And HOT!! BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Dr. Beckham is a very good instructor. I learned a lot from him although he grades very hard. I would recommend if you want to learn then take his classes. Expect to work hard and follow his instructions and you will pass the class. He is always available for help and wants his students to win.
Dr Beckham was so cool. I really enjoyed taking his class. So much so that I'm going to take his class again next semester for english 200!!
Beckham's critical thinking class will definitely force you to flex the old coconut, his essays are centered more around quality of content and significance of your argument. Participate in class to establish your presence and ask questions, because he is there to help and is always rooting for his students. Super funny guy, tough grader.
really good class. he comes off as a very hard grader at first but lightens up towards the end of the semester. he gives really great feedback on all essays. not much extra credit so i would not recommend missing assignments. he does give random extra credit for showing up to class early! barely used the textbook. no more than 4 absences.
Prof. Beckham is a really nice guy but, he is a tough grader! Out of all the professors I've had, he's a real stickler when it comes to grammar.
One of the best professors I've had! His class was difficult, but I feel it's made me a better writer. As long as you follow his exact instructions, you will do well! Would take again.
This professor is constantly trying to act "cool" instead of actually teaching things that students would want to learn. Topics/Prompts are VERY boring and his personality annoys me a lot, but overall he is an alright teacher.
do yourself a favor and don't take his class. I like to be challenged in my classes but this guy is over the top confusing and makes things difficult. He is not clear about what he wants. He is cocky and has a huge ego. Seems like he comes to class to show off instead of to spread knowledge with his students which is what good professors do
Beckham is a great teacher. The methods he teachers for writing an essay make it super easy to actually write the essay. He is super clear with what he wants, so if you follow what he says you should be good. He is a tough grader but since he is so explicit with his directions it makes sense. I think he is a really funny guy & good teacher
This class is not for students looking for an mindless A; this class is for those wanting to become better writers in preparation of future school and career work. That said,a good grade in this class is more than manageable given Beckham's clear instructions and truly reasonable expectations. Caring guy, well-designed class; definitely recommended
Beckham's English 1B class was my favorite out of all classes I've taken at SB. The class is easy if you listen to what he wants in his papers, and do exactly what he says. He's always happy to help. Assignments are just 3 essays and 1 research paper. He's hilarious and really knows what he's talking about. Gives out many extra credit opportunities
If you are a true American and want to feel like you are riding on the back of a bald eagle while Springsteen blares in the background, take Beckham! He is an awesome guy who is super clear and makes his class fun and keeps everyone's attention. Day one ask if he even lifts?
Is a great teacher for learning how to write but often gets intense at students for having opinions that don't match with his own. However he is great at helping you out if you don't understand something.
I would never suggest this teacher in a million years. By far the most awful teacher I have ever had. He is a tough grader and does not care to help you. No matter how much help you are getting from tutors, friends, etc. it is never up to his standards. Beware. Take another teacher.
Most helpful English professor I have ever had. Gives actual feedback on how to improve your writing, not the abstract, meaningless "help" you'' often get from other English professors. Very structured class, but he keeps it interesting with his humor. Take his advice to heart and you'll come out with an A and overall stronger writing skills.
If you take Beckham, prepare to be publicly humiliated and berated in classes where you turn in anything, be it outlines, sources assignments, or essays. High grading expectations so be prepared to work. On a positive note, he effectively teaches the material and helps develop your writing skills. So I'd say take him with caution if at all.
Dr. Jack's class was challenging. He is very specific about what he wants, so if he asks you to do something a certain way, he means it. He is very particular about how essays should be written too. He did not give feedback on drafts in his online course, but he did give feedback on outlines assignments. There was one extra credit opportunity.
Dr. Beckham was very very tough on grading, however the outline and sources assignemts really helped me become a better writer and understand the process. As another said, he can be a bit intense during the "student conferences" in class about outlines, prob. because there's so many students & not enough time. But he'll stay after class to help too
If you need this class for transfer and think it's an easy A, you might regret it. Beckham will make you a better writer and holds you accountable like a professor should. Most of the readings have free audio books on Youtube, USE THEM. If you put in the time to read the book, know how to write a thesis and use quotes correctly, you will get an A.
The 5 major essays are the most important parts of the course, the problem is he is constantly late responding to approving your essay topics. Twice I was forced to research and write a 1200 word essay in one day because he disapproved my suggested topics. Among other frustrations like this, I would advise against this class online with this prof.
Professor Beckham's English 1A class was very challenging. He was a very rude teacher and would often leave me terrible feedback on assignments. His class is set up clear and you know what to expect each week as far as assignments go, there's not many assignments he gives out which is a plus but also is a negative since he is a very tough grader.
lol don't take him. take someone else
Professor held up his end the whole way through. He cares about his work like a real professor, which is a rarity these day. Papers are supposed to be straight forward, no fancy language or anything. Interesting movies. Ask him about the material, he's written things himself.
I took him for Eng 52, thinking it was going to be easy. Not only did it bring my GPA down but he only wants the essays written his way and he's really opiniated. Wish I didn't take this class at all.
Reaching Mr. Beckham during his office hours was incredibly difficult to do since he was not always there--and asked me to leave one time. The feedback I received on my papers were vague and inconsistent, and I didn't feel I was given the help I sought after. I had hoped to improve on my writing and learn in this class, but my hopes were not met.
Professor Beckham hands down cares about his students and will teach you how to write for the rest of your life. He is a tough grader, so be prepared.
Do all of the readings. They'll show up in quizzes or tests. He's a fair, yet difficult grader. Have him look over your essay before its due. You aren't graded on participation, but do it anyways to make the class lively. Solid class. I enjoy the material, and I also like him as a professor/person. Save money & buy the 7th edition of the anthology.
Honestly one of the worst classes I've ever taken. I'm a fairly good writer, but it was difficult to get a decent grade on his essays because he was never clear on what he wanted and very inconsistent. Seems to prefer the commentary/quote formula essays that they teach you in middle school, but unless you share his opinion, you're not getting an A
ENG 1A was a very tough. beckham made it fun. As fun as it could be, I guess. He can be a bit intense during the outline conferences, but gave good feedback. He really seem to care. Come to his office hours if you need help. He's a tough grader but helped me improve.
Dr. Beckham offers every student an opportunity to learn and improve his or her writing and reading capabilities. Because he is very clear in the assignments and is always available to help his students, he rightly expects the same effort from his students. I enjoyed every class and appreciated his down to earth honest and humorous personality.
Dr. Beckham's class was one of the best classes I have ever taken. I learned so much. Be prepared to read, he will quiz you but he explains the material well & tells you exactly what you need to know.. He really cares, & if you show you care too he will help. Beware he's a joker so if you are easily offended don't take this class. Be ready to laugh
Prof. Beckham's class was interesting. There's about 10 reading pop quizzes which are normally on the longest readings. Be prepared to work for your grade, pay attention to detail, and read. 3 major exams, 3 papers. Overall pretty funny guy who makes drab topics entertaining.
He is rigid. Follow his instructions to the letter. He needs respect above all, and following his instructions is a way of giving him the respect he needs. Also feel free to show him respect in all ways; some call this sucking up. Do not be creative; just do exactly what he tells you to do.
The guy is really tough but gives clear instructions, especially on the hardest essays like common groudn. Essays are worth more as you go. Pay attention to his instructions about formatting and don't miss deadlines. Outlines are easy points as long as they're long enough. Overall, not impossible, but challenging. I learned a lot but had to work!
I DON'T LIKE HIS ARROGANT ATTITUDE TOWARDS TO HIS STUDENT.
Beckham is disrespectful and rude. He is not understanding. He does not give constructive feedbacks but only negative feedbacks where he will make a student feel terrible about themselves. He is the worst teacher ever!! Take his class if you dare want to fail and ruin your GPA! Good luck!
Beckham has helped me grow as a writer and illustrator. His sense of humor is difficult for most to understand because he is pretty blunt and straight forward but he is honestly a very nice guy and he cares for his students more than he is willing to admit. His grading is very clear and straight forward as well, everything is the same as the rubric
Beckham wants to see his students succeed. He is hilarious, but is no nonsense and cannot stand BS excuses. Wouldnt suggest him if you are lazy. His grading criteria is straight forward and he goes over exactly what he is looking for. Go to his office hours and have someone proof read your papers. I worked hard and revived an A. Great professor!
Professor Beckham is very blunt, even online, which takes some getting used to and can't be taken personally. He assigns lots of reading and is very clear in his expectations, and so long as you participate in every assignment, complete every discussion and follow his criteria for essays then you should pass. I found his class interesting and fair.
Ridiculous grader. Good writers - honors students and English majors - who put genuine effort into his essays got Cs. I knew a girl who never came to class, would never watch the movies, and would write a basic paper the morning it was due, but would still always get an A. The worst writer you are, the better you will do.
He tries to be funny but it just comes off as rude. He also is an insanely tough grader for an entry level class. I have always been an A student in English but with him, I am a B- at best. He is not understanding at all and made me hate this subject. I do not recommend his class at all.
Funny professor and does actually care about his students. Yes his grading is hard, but if you do the work and ask for help you will get an A. I finished with a 95%. If you can not handle this class you are honestly just lazy. His jokes are really funny and keeps the class lively.
He's overall a great professor. Grades papers on the harder side but in a good way; he wants you to do well. Does the pair minimum for required class work so the load is really easy. You write 5 essays, one being in class. He's really funny and is not a teacher to sugar coat your flaws. He will help you become a better writer.
Professor Beckham sets clear guidelines for the course as a whole as well as each assignment. He does not throw curve balls and is a fair grader. I found Beckham to be very understanding and willing to work with students. He may be blunt sometimes, but he truly cares about his students and wants to help them improve and succeed. Highly recommend.
He is amazing! He doesn't just hand out A's, but if you work hard and ask him for help, he will gladly help you! I learned how to be a better writer because of him. He is HILARIOUS and genuinely cares about his classes. If you want a class that just hands you A's don't take his class. If he taught other classes, I would choose him again. :)
Interesting class but you can only do well if he likes you or you write the exact way he wants you to. He is rude and demeaning, but only to some students. Other students seem to be his pets. Lectures can be interesting when he doesn't spend the whole time talking about his personal life.
Prof Beckham is by far the best professor Ive ever had. He does not hand out participation trophies which upsets a lot of younger students. He grades fairly and is VERY clear on what hes looking for. I learned so much and I feel confident to write papers at at college level. I grew so much in this class. Biggest tip: go to his office hours!
Dr. Beckham is easily the most understanding and inspiring educator Ive ever had. The homework is light, just have to do your readings, and his in class discussions are really helpful. He is a funny guy and you can tell cares about his students. Will definitely be taking his classes again and would recommend him to everyone.
I enjoyed this class a lot, Beckham is hilarious. It is definitely the kind of class you have to work hard for, but he is always very welcoming to help his students. His humor is definitely not for everyone though. He would brush off comments students would give to contribute during class but it was his way of being funny.
I am not one of the "smarter kids" in class and usually not super liked by teachers. I was assuming this class would be the same thing. But no, if you genuinely try regardless of your skill level, he'll like you. He is 1 of the most caring, motivated, and intelligent profs I've had. I learned so much in this class its insane. He's also funny.
I really loved this class! I'm a new English major and taking it helped me realize I made the right choice. You definitely have to work for your grade but he gives detailed feedback and is always available if you need help outside of class. Also, be ready for the reading quizzes. Not getting 100% will impact your grade more than you think.
ENG52 with Dr. Beckham has been one of the best classes I've taken at Saddleback. ENG 52 has given me a deeper, more analytical perspective of films. Beckham makes the expectations for papers extremely clear and thoroughly explains every aspect of the prompt. Yes there are readings assigned, but what else did you expect from a literature class?
Dr. Beckham is a fantastic professor. His lectures are engaging, informative, and hilarious. Readings are not overly demanding and he will warn you when one happens to be longer than others. He also guarantees that your papers will be graded and returned to you within two weeks. Take the class seriously, pay attention, and I promise you'll succeed.
This class is a great introduction to film analysis and the movies you watch are all really interesting. Due to COVID, we transitioned from an in person to all online class mid-semester and his resources online are great. Instructions for assignments and essays are very clear. Ask questions, put in effort, analyze the films and youll do great.
Dr. Beckham is an incredible professor. Its easy to rant about a professor on here all because you expected an easy A. Beckham respects you and therefore holds you to a clear college standard. Ive taken 3 classes with him and dont regret a single one. Follow his instructions, take the class seriously, and theres no reason you cant pass.
One of the hardest writing/English classes I have ever taken. Please do not take this class if you want an easy A or is bad at catching deadlines. He is extremely demanding, but is willing to help. Nice but really harsh on grading. The textbook is mandatory, but he rarely use it (for 3 assignments), and those could be done without textbook really.
Beckham is a real treat. He is funny during class, yet gets strict when it matters. He is my favorite teacher of all time. He is a tough grader and makes you work to get a good grade in his course. You surely come out being a better writer.
Prof. Beckham certainly cares about teaching the art of composition and helping students gain a solid grasp of MLA. Responds at length to each student. Very narrow assignment criteria at times & lots of material. He's very present, even online. Students not long out of high school will likely feel more at home than older, non-traditional learners.
I honestly loved Beckham. He is extremely tough as a grader and instructor, but its really nice is if you home to him with help he will take extra time to really make sure you understand the material.
Worst Professor ever!! If you want to fail and ruin your GPA, take this class with him! He is absolutely rude and unnecessarily tough! Do yourself a favor and take this class with someone else.
I took English 1A and 201 with Dr. Beckham this semester as a dual enrollment student. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you follow the instructions for essays and ask any for help during his office hours, you will learn a lot. I enjoyed and learned a lot from this class, and would highly recommend Professor Beckham.
I think Mr. Beckham has been my favorite professor so far. He's informative, funny, and gives good feedback. You will learn a lot from this class and your writing will definitely improve. He is clear on what he wants and expects from you and if you get stuck, he will help. If you want to know how to write a real college essay, take this class!
Dr. Beckham is committed to teaching composition and preparing students for their academic path. He goes above and beyond his job duties, actually caring about the success and education of his students. He will prepare you with the compositional skills necessary for the rest of your educational and professional careers.
His grading is extremely harsh and be prepared for rude responses if he interprets you or your questions as dumb. There's a saying that most professors live by, "there's no stupid questions." Well, in this class, tread lightly. I do not recommend this professor to any student, stay away if you care about your grade and your sanity.
He was the worst professor that I have ever had. I took his class when it was in-person and he was unbelievably racist. He made not only me feel uncomfortable but many others in his class. He was a strict grader, but wanted people to succeed. I wouldn't risk the tough grading and very rude remarks he would make in his class. I DON'T RECOMMEND!
Honestly this profesor was tough and a tough grader but as long as you do ALL the assignments your grade will maintain at least in the C range. Whoever said he was racist is lying everything he would mention he stood for was the complete opposite. Just do the work and youll be fine.
Beckham gives you everything you need to succeed in the class, if you do the work. He is very accessible and wants to help his students flourish. Attending his office hours , applying his thorough and detailed feedback, and the resources he provides you will extremely benefit your progress in the class. 10/10 would take a class of his again!
Beckham's 201 class was absolutely necessary to pass the 1A class. The assignments and online meetings were crucial and beneficial to the essays. He is notorious for "dad jokes" which lightened the mood for distance learning. I'm actually sad the semester ended.
Professor Beckham was hands down one of the best professors I have had! The structure of the class was on point, it was easy to follow and self-explanatory. He provided everything you need to pass the class, if you do ALL the assignments and turn them in on time you will pass. He CARES and helps his students! I would take his class all over again!
Took Beckham's class for ENG 1B and struggled, but his feedback always stuck out to me. Beckham is thoughtful with responses and really pushes you to make your best work. If you can, it is highly recommended that you go to his office hours. He will tell you exactly what to expect and how to prepare. My writing has improved leaps and bounds since.
His online class is just straight writing. It is entirely busy work, and there are many times where you will be sitting in one spot for 5+ hrs writing essays. Along with the amount of time you are spending, you will not receive a good grade because he might be the harshest grader i've seen, it is his way and only his way for how a paper should be.
Beckham's ENG 1B class follows the required Course Outline of Record that ALL ENG 1B classes follow at Saddleback to meet univ. transfer requirements. He assigns 3 short 3-4 page essays + one 2,500 word research paper (the same as ALL ENG 1B faculty). He also assigns typical "scaffolding" work and reflection assignments. He does grades with rigor.
Dr. Beckham's online class was handsdown the best online class I've every taken. It's structured so clear and he gives individual audio feedbback for every assignment. He's a stickler for MLA format and grammar stuff, but if you ask for help he'll make sure you get it right. If you take him, go to his office hours! He was super helpful.
Took this class with the ENG 201 thing. It was alright. 5 essays and 1 in class essay which was intense. The 201 class definately helped me get the work done. The librarian coming was really helpful. Mr. Beckhams jokes are kinda corny but he really cares and pushed us to be better writers. I learned alot.
I dreaded writing essays, but the super-engaging and funny Beckham completely reshaped my experience into an amazingly enjoyable and interesting adventure! If you put in the work - youll get the best caring Beckham can offer. If I did good although I am an international student, and this was my first semester in the U.S - anyone can.
Beckham is my favorite professor for the last semester! He made writing essays fun and interesting; he is funny and engaging during classes, and goes above and bastions to have his students succeed in his class. I took it with the 201, which for me was a waste of time. Although I am an int student, Beckham challenged and encouraged me to thrive.
Professor Beckham was by far one of my favorite teachers. His class is organized perfectly, and is very clear. If you have a good sense of writing you do not need to buy the textbook. He provides all of the information you need in the PowerPoints and w feedback. Grade is composed of 4 papers, but if you follow his feedback you can work for an A.
Beckham's tough grading and formulaic approach to essay writing discourages creativity and/or any excitement about a topic. It's as he has a preconceived formula of exactly what an essay should say and how it should be put together, but very little guidance beforehand as if you are supposed to read his mind.
I was nervous about taking this class online, but Prof. beckham made the class great. His pdfs on writing about literature was very helpful. He cares about students and wants us to write college level essays. go to his zoom office hours if you wnat help and the class should be easy. 2 Essays, 2 presentations, and short tests/quizzes.
He only gives feedback in audio files so if you want feedback, even via email, it will be a 5-10 min voice recording. Does not give helpful feedback over email. All the due dates during the week are random, some on each day, some at 10 PM some at midnight. Has incredibly random yet strict rules. Doable if you read the fine print on EVERYTHING.
Professor Beckham is a very intelligent individual however, he is very condescending and rude. He will take the time to look over your work but his feedback lacks insight and he tends to make you feel inadequate. I believe he lacks discipline and feels he needs to tear his students down to bring himself up. My advice find a better professor.
Dr. Beckham's class is my favorite I'm taking. Alhough English is not my favorite subject, his lectures are engaging and entertaining. As long as you go to lecture and pay attention the essays are very simple and not too complicated. I really recommend going to office hours to have him review your rough drafts to understand what to fix.
Professor Beckam is caring and also very funny. He goes out of his way to help his students in class and in office hours ( he can get a little grumpy when he's hungry tho. lol) He gives great feedback on papers and really wants us to succeed. I wish we could use internet sources for all the essays but he explained why we can't.
