His decision to have Kristen, a tutor helps out.

Good teacher, but moves through course material very quickly, and tests alot. If not good with Anotomy/Physiology, you will probably struggle.
Very entertaining and funy. he is easy to listen to even though sometimes his lectures are a little hazy.
Great teacher!!!
Brooks is so funny it makes up for the unclearness in his lectures. If you keep on top of your reading, this unclearness isn't a problem.
He is the best professor I ever had. Great teaching method, always happy and energetic. He is the best. ex-CASS students love him!
This is probably the toughest teacher I have or ever will have. His tests are outragiously confusing. He really wants you to know the subject matter like the back of your hand. If you aren't going to use this the rest of your life take an easier professor. But he is very nice and a fun teacher.

wow this guy sure knows his stuff. wish i knew mine, *sigh*.
Jack is tough, but knows his stuff. He will push you hard and has high expectations. You will earn your grade. Awesome instructor!
This Professor is one of the best. He goes through the material quickly so you have to keep up with you reading. He definately makes you earn your grade. If you have no intrest in learing and keeping this information and just need the credit, this is not the class for you. Anyone intrested in a medical profession take this professor.
Jack is a great teacher, but is sooo hard!! His test are so difficult. Don't take him if you don't like biology, take Lee Mitchell!
Jack is an awesome teacher-if you take awesome notes and willing to study like crazy!!!
Very good teacher. I liked his class a lot.
Jack is a great teacher. He is witty and makes the class fun. If you pay attention you'll catch some of his jokes and that he really like Bi-Mart.
I have my BA's now, and look back on Jack (who I took in 2000) as one of the BEST teachers in my educational career. Very humble, seems to love teaching, FUNNY etc. Highly recomend!
I think Jack is really funny and had previously taken Biology with him and got an A. However, his Nutrition class is a different story. He is very militant about Nutrition since it is his previous profession. He makes his exams very tricky usually with more than one answer. With only tests and one project, you had better ace his exams to get an A.
Hard teacher, even though its a non majors class its bar is set high. Wow since you probably already scheduled him into your schedule by the time you read this. Take notes and study, maybe even sacrifice something to the gods for luck. This class made me yearn for apoptosis.
Nice person who cares about what he's teaching and thus tends to set the bar high; in this case it's a good thing. Study, study, study! Also a good lab instructor.
This teacher is very hard. He is great if you are a pet. But if you do not ask 100 questions and act completely interested, good luck. When it comes down to it, he does not really care. His test are VERY hard, I studied all the time and barely got a B.
Unless you are is class "pet" its not worth the effort for this class. He likes to talk on and on about himself and how far he has to drive every day to teach. Arrogant, self absorbed, egotistical..and yes, I got an A in this class.
great prof
Jack is a really nice guy but his class is incredibly hard. His tests are outrageously hard!! I am taking Nutrition and he is the only professor that teaches it at MHCC right now. Even if you study hard it is still a hard class! His lectures are confusing too. But does love nutrition. Good luck, you'll need it!!
Jack is a veeeery hard teacher. i had him and so did my mom and we found him to be very arrogant, blunt and rude. He picks little "pets" which makes everyone else feel like crap and he ALWAYS treats the majority of his students like idiots for even asking questions! not even worth your time to take his class! take paul rabe instead, hes much better!
-nice -lots of different analagies -clear lectures -lectures and lecture powerpoints available online -jokes around a lot (probably why a lot of people on here think he's arrogant-they dont realize he's kidding) -answers questions thoroughly -study regularly and dont get behind and the class is fine (and i took the crammed 5 week course)
Great teacher! Jack is a funny guy who makes learning fun. Has great lecture notes that go along word for word with what he's prepared for class. Tests are a little hard but as long as you keep up with the studying, easy class.
Would not recommend! Took nutrition online and his tests were insane! His lectures were great, his slides were great, his study guides were nice, but then when it came test time only half of what was on the study guide is on the test and the rest I think he just pulls from no where. I never received a C before him.
DO NOT take this class online. It is ridiculously hard and has more work than any college class i have seen, including a graduate level. there is 3 teachers and 3 teachers worth of work, it is insane. they had system problems the entire time yet still tested on information you could only gain from these inaccessible systems. Find another school!!
His lectures, notes and study guides are very helpful. He uses a lot of questions from the study guides on exams, but don't fully rely on them as he sometimes doesn't add all the questions. He always had ways of putting students down, so don't take him if you want to be able to feel comfortable asking questions.
If you have the chance to take this class from Jack Brooks, DO IT! He is an excellent instructor ;)
Lectures at lightning speed and it seems he may be tired of teaching. OR he lectures as if his audience already knows. As professors go I haven't had one who I wasn't able to learn from, until now.
Good teacher. Kinda funny. Exams are a little tough. Homework and quizzes were easy.
Good teacher, interested in subject. Has helpful analogies.
He is a very good teacher. Class lectures are very clear, and he is willing to help you out if you have questions. He is full of helpful analogies in lecture. To pass his class you have to put in the time and the effort tests are pretty tough. it isn't an easy a. He is a great teacher though, i would highly recommend his class.
Not the best professor, if you can, take someone else! He lectures as if you know the material already and thus lectures are way too fast. He has a way of putting students down and being mean with his so-called "humor." Exams are really tough, and there are way too many assignments to be done for this just one class. Teaching isn't for Jack.
Jack is a great instructor. At first he comes off a little harsh, but it's just his dry humor. The class is not easy and is a lot of work, but I got my moneys worth and more. Jack prepares you for the "real world". It wasn't an easy A, if it was I wouldn't have learned anything.
Jack is an amazing teacher! I took his 3 wk summer course. His powerpoints and lectures were clear and he uses the info from them solely in his in-class quizzes and exams. Online quizzes were more based on the book, but he allows multiple attempts. Grading is fair and negotiable if there are questions worded poorly. Take his class!
I took this class online, and found it extremely intensive. The lectures are so boring, I had a really hard time paying attention. The exams are based solely on the lecture, not on the book, so if you have hard time with his droning and horrible humor, you are doomed.
For a scientist it's amazing Jack cannot word test questions in a way that can only be interpreted one way. Very confusing, bad at explaining. lots of trick questions. Constantly puts his students down and calls people out in front of the entire class. Consistently switches homework assignments.Dont take Jack if you actually want to learn something
Confusing, consistently putting students down and calling them out in front of class. Always changing assignments. unclear questions and lectures This teachers class was unstructured and useless. I don't feel that i learned anything. The teacher wasnt very helpful.
This was a hybrid course. I found that Jack was very intimidating at first. As time went on he grew on me and I really enjoyed his class. He is very helpful and wants you to do well. This class is just difficult because you have to devote a great deal of time and energy into it.
Easy, understandable, interesting instructor.
Take Jack! Pay attention, ask questions and you will do fine. Nice teacher and he wants you to succeed.
I would have liked to have learned about nutrition, however, instructor is confusing. The outlines are difficult to follow and purposefully tricky. Voices personal opinions on subjects not pertaining to class. Class consumes too much time for in-class course. As a male, I noticed the chauvinistic attitude and comments. Egotistical!
Huge waste of time. Unable to learn b/c Jack is too consumed with horrible humor, and what is not nutrients/related. Poor color coded outlines that do not correlate seemingly to confuse. Too many personal opinions. Doesn't seem to like men. Noticed he shuts them down fast when they try to answer or ask questions. Tries to make you seem dumb.
I was extremely nervous coming into this class. Luckily Jack is very helpful. Before classes even started he already had all his podcasts and powerpoints online, assignments and due dates. He stops to answer questions and every now and then has a funny joke to share to break up what he knows is tough stuff. I am taking Jack again for Nutrition
Hybrid course. Good instructor working with dry material. Homework-intensive, perhaps overly so. You will work hard for an A. Tests could be very vague, with multiple answers possibly right. That became tedious and frustrating, but otherwise good instructor.
Jack is a great professor. He is not an easy teacher, which is a good thing because the information that is being taught will help in future classes. I would take another class that he was teaching in the future.
Jack is the least helpful instructor I have had. He mocks you for asking questions. He spends so much time talking about himself that he runs out of time to actually teach, which is a shame because he knows his subject very well. I've maintained an A, but no thanks to him. If you have any other options, run far away from this teacher.
Tough but fair teacher. I took him biology and nutrition. Although these were not easy classes, he his more than willing to explain in depth via email or during his office hours. He's also very understanding if there was an emergency or something. I missed two tests because of outside causes and he was very helpful in allowing me to take them.
Very unorganized, doesn't seem to know how to program his tests, does not read our work carefully, graded down for things that are clearly in the assignments. Homework load is ridiculous for what this class is. Strange, backwards, confusing, vague manner of asking questions on tests. This is only nutrition, dude. Stop taking yourself so seriously.
Ridiculous! Crazy load of weekly homework. The assignments were challenging to meet the requirements without clear explanation. Tests weren't the same material as covered in text. Study guide questions were not even close to actual tests. I like nutrition but this class is killing it for me. I would look for a different teacher for this class.
I am an A student. I pulled a C. Tests are purposefully vague and misleading. Homework load is completely ridiculous. He is trying to justify that Nutrition is a real class, too! Yeah, we get it, but be reasonable, it is only a 200-level course. Misleading study guides and vague tests, plus incorrect quiz materials only frustrate your students.
Dull teacher, makes fun of past students. Automatically expects you to know everything. I always ask questions but when it does to him i don't. He makes fun of you for asking and makes you feel stupid. Calls on students in front of everyone. Study guides are not helpful. Taking him for nutrition sadly..
So I'm going to take this chance to say up front that I failed this class... but Jack is a great teacher. He makes it clear from the get go that it is a hard subject and that if you don't have the time to devote to it, you'll fail. he is clear about what he expects from you, and he expects you to KNOW not just memorize. I would highly recommend him
All in all, I thought he was a real jerk. He makes fun of students for all sorts of things, expects everyone to know everything, and so on. He straight up called me a slacker, and stupid. Jack is full of himself and seems to look down on everyone.
He's a real funny teacher, but some students don't realize he's joking and panic. He is real helpful if you ask for it. You will learn a lot and do well if you follow directions. Some of the work is given to you and you just have to follow the instructions and remember "where's the data." You will also learn about Bi-Mart and of Mosier )
Great teacher.
Jack made the tests incredibly difficult and lengthy, with over 100 questions for each midterm. This was the worst class experience I have ever had, yet you can still come out with an A if you keep up with the online quizzes and assignments. I nearly flunked almost every test yet somehow came out with an A in the class.
Jack is a great professor he's passionate about his job and what he teaches about. If you show up to lecture, exam, ask questions and participate he will gladly answer your question. He also has exam questions on power point every morning with answers! He plays favorites though so just stick to his good side, show up to class and you'll be golden!
Loved him! One of my favorite professors. Always available for questions. Grades assignments and test very quickly. Easy to talk with, and always staying after hours to review test questions. Test are fairly difficult but he offers a lot of extra credit.
Not a fan...
Jack, was very easy to talk to and had a dry sarcastic sense of humor.. I enjoyed the bloopers during the hybrid lectures.. I learned a lot from his class and as long as the student is engaged Jack was accessible for questions.
This class is a lot of work, and Jack isn't the most helpful. There is a ton of online homework and quizzes. Be prepared to be in front of the computer every night.
Jack can be rough around the edges, but he is an excellent instructor. I didn't care for him when I took BI112, but I have really enjoyed this class. He is extremely helpful if you go to his office hours or email him with concerns.
This class was way over the top. Jack thinks nutrition is the most important subject a nursing student needs to know. The tests are long and confusing. The final was 140 questions with a time limit of 100 min. He purposely tries to confuse test takers. Study guides don't reflect material on test. Save your grade take the class with another teacher.
Seriously the nicest teacher I've had, also the hardest. Tough grader, TOUGH tests 140+ questions each time, 4+ hours of homework a night. Get ready to have no life, because this guy is out of control on homework and study guides and quizzes.
Had Jack for cell bio, just study his powerpoints and listen to his podcast lectures of the class if any material was unclear in class and you WILL get an A. Do the extra credit and homework, none of which is really hard or long. Lab is not too demanding either. Just study the powerpoints for his tests and you will pass. It's most of your grade.
If you come to study and learn you will Love Jack. He's the man!!
Jack is good but he grades tough. Take advantage of office hours. Maybe it is just me, but I struggled a lot with the exams. He really wants you to know the content, this is not a memorizing class. His lectures are great and he organizes the course work perfectly. Overall: great, but tough grader (and really funny!)
His lectures are random and disorganized. Material is scattered and not taught in any order of importance. He is incredibly monotone. His exam questions are some of the worst written questions I've ever had to deal with. I have an A in the class yet, it's probably the worst teaching style I've encountered. He makes you buy the e-book, doesn't use
By far the most challenging course I have taken. Too much material to complete in one week. No kidding!! Labs are ridiculous! They are very confusing and too long to complete on time. He is very funny! Make sure you do extra credit and study powerpoints, quiz's & learn-smarts every week. And you will be just fine.
Jack is a great teacher, tough but wants you to know the information. Definitely not an easy A, makes you work for it. But if you go to his office hours, he is more than willing to help and is very understanding of life as long as you communicate. Jack is a tough teacher, but I feel I learned things in his class, and would take his classes again.
When he tells you to start that nutrition paper about halfway into the quarter, take his advice. It isn't particularly hard but it is incredibly time consuming. I am a world-class procrastinator, and let me say that is NOT AT ALL something you want to do with that paper. Expect confusing test questions, but if you study you should be alright.
I don't know what's with the negative reviews. Jack expects everyone to learn a lot in this class and work. People who complain mostly want to come sit out the class and get an A. Read, turn things on time, study and pass. Gives study guides with exact questions, lectures are clear. If possible start paper early.
Jack is one of the best instructors here at MHCC! He really knows what he is doing, he's very smart, funny dude. His jocks for some people may be too harsh but he is 100% correct. He's very honest and always willing to give extra credits. His exams are based ONLY on his lecture material, so it really easy to be prepared for it!
This is the second time I've had Jack after having him for BI112 in Fall 15. There's not much to the class other than in-class lectures and online quizzes with the occasional homework assignment. It's hard, you can procrastinate studying the night before a test and get away with it but I don't suggest it. Be warned it's a tough course.
Lot's of homework, he'll pile it on because he wants you to feel the stress of your future career
Jack is an amazing instructor. He knows really good what he teaches and he is very direct. A lot of people complaint that he is hard, but I think anything can be hard when you don't study. I always got A's on all my exams. HE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP YOU DURING HIS OFFICE HOURS AND IF YOU WALK INTO HIS OFFICE NOT DURING OFFICE HRS HE WILL HELP U!
I LOVE THIS INSTRUCTOR and I love how he teaches. He is very helpful and funny. He ALWAYS gives you study guides before any exam and even the final. The study guide questions are 70% of what will be on each exam/final. Exams are from the power pints. He goes over each study guide bf4 the exams. Got A on all exams. Took him for BI112 , got an A too.
Jack is my favorite professor. He pushes you and does his best to prepare you for his test and for your future career. He responds and grades very quickly. Very straight to the point lectures and homework. Very well structured. Is very gracious with extending due dates as well. I always take classes with him every chance I get.
Jack is awesome. I like his sense of humor. He respects those who work hard.
I don't know why this guy has any bad ratings at all. he was extremely helpful and understanding. he put time aside any time he was asked and was very straight forward about his expectations. anyone who didn't do well clearly had too much going on with work or personal life because this class was awesome if you put in the work and are motivated.
Jack is an outstanding professor. His lectures are clear and the expectations of the class are direct. He always responds to emails with questions about assignments and the material in a reasonable amount of time. He cares about the material and he is interested in you getting it. Excellent instructor. He also thinks he is hilarious.
Jack is a great professor! I took his BI101 class expecting it to be extremely difficult and it wasn't. Instead of doing finals, we just took a quiz every Monday and Wednesday to test the stuff we learned that week. Don't get me wrong the stuff we learn is difficult, but he makes it fun and easy by showing videos and using hands on experiences.
He wont be available outside of class hours. Busy guy, don't bother him and don't ask him questions alone.
Jack is a really chill professor but at the same time is very strict on due dates, so turn it in on-time or get no credit for the assignment.
TAKE HIS CLASS ONLINE! His lectures need a pause button!
Jack is an amazing professor and really knows his stuff! He is available outside of class and offers tons of extra credit. He not only wants his students to succeed but understand the concepts so they are prepared for A&P. I got an A+ by utilizing his office hours and the tutoring center.
Jack is one of the best professors at MHCC! He is always willing to help and available in his office. My biggest tip to anyone planning on taking nutrition is to start the three day diet analysis as soon as you can, it's definitely not something you can wait to do until the last minute!
At first I wasn't sure about Jack, this class is HARD, in the sense that it is very time consuming, make sure you have enough time to do hw every week. At the end I had an 88% (technically a B), but it looks like he weighted grades. And I got an A! He wants nursing majors to be prepared for the work load of nursing programs! He is nice and helpful.
I would recommend any professor besides Brook. Does not care about his students, especially females. Uses crude and offensive humor often. He is well versed in the information, and well qualified. Do not ask questions unless you want to feel humiliated. Skip Brook there are many better professors.
Brook is great, he has standards and he sticks to them. You will probably have to take him for bi112 and fn225 because Mhcc doesnt have any other instructors for these classes really. His exams are difficult, and the class is a heavy class. Take a light load during the term you take any of his classes.
Listen, Jack is a rare breed. He is hilarious if you have a dry sense of humor and can take it. He wants you to succeed. If you ask a question, don't expect for him to just give up the answer... He will make you look for it and research the answer. How else are you going to learn? LOTS of reading. Helpful if you split it up with a buddy. Book/quiz
Online course is very disorganized. Due dates and schedule are not updated. Assignments that Jack used to assign, but no longer does, are still on the schedule, confusing everyone. 5 exams in the term are proctored -- what is the point of being online at that rate? Crams an unrealistic amount of info needed on each exam without notes. DO NOT TAKE.
Hardest tests ever.
Seems like a real nice guy that wants you to do well, however his tests say differently. The study guides are a bit much. I don't think the human brain is capable of memorizing that much information. Lots of easy assignments except for the diet analysis. Pointless assignment but worth a lot of points, I recommend not waiting until the last minute.
Grades stuff to critically and tests are not based on study guides from class.
Get ready to do a lot of reading and assignments. He is very clear on what he expects, and is easily accessible if you want to ask for clarification. Quizzes are based on articles he easily provides on portal since the beginning of term and tests are based on all his lectures you can watch as many times as you need.
I took FN225 in the summer and it was a big mistake. Along with FN225 I took two more classes and the amount of homework and studying I needed to do for this class was stressful. There are exams almost every other week. Very Very difficult class. Take this course when you have a lot of time in your hands and don't take too many classes with it
This was a very difficult class in the sense that there is A LOT of work to do. Quizzes & exams are proctored and due every other week, as well as discussion posts. An in-depth 3 day diet analysis is due at the end of the term IN ADDITION to the final exam. Jack is a tough grader, but offers extra credit and is quick at grading and messaging.
I took BI112 online & FN w/ Jack. His study guides are very helpful in doing well on exams. He has a very dry sense of humor and relatively easy to get ahold via email or in person. He hands out a lot of assignments but he tell you upfront what he expects. Overall, if you keep up with the busy work its easy to get a good grade.
Great teacher, but very difficult class. Lots of lecturing, hard grader especially on exams. Dry sense of humor, really funny. Loved this teacher, but with the level of difficulty I am not sure I'd take him again in the future. You really have to work EXTREMELY hard and apply yourself in this class. He holds you accountable.
Very dry sense of humor and that makes lectures long and drawn out. Overall, he is a good professor and I would take him again.
His class was pretty hard, but keep in mind that the material itself isn't easy. The first week is the most hectic, but other than that it's not so bad. You have to study really hard for this class to pass the exams, but that's 'cause the material is difficult. Plus, he has a lot of extra credit and it helps a lot.
Jack was an okay teacher. The class was a tough class and he gave lots of things to read, but that is what is expected it's a college course. He is willing to host study sessions before exams, and the labs were actually really fun! At the end Jack even rounded up my grade to an A so that was really nice too!
Unclear expectations, meandering lectures with terrible jokes (disrespectful of valuable student time), study guide doesn't match the exams, expensive online program with extensive required homework that doesn't to the exams, completely disorganized course site. Total mess of a class. Only difficult because of that. Would never recommend.
He clearly doesnt know how to use a computer because his materials are formatted like a third grader put them together. There is no order to the way we are going through the materials. His study guides are pretty much the test, but his lectures are so hard to follow because of his scattered attack, that going through the study guides can be hard.
I have too many degrees and that means I have had many professors. Jack has set a new low. His lectures? Bad. The ppt for the lectures? Thrown together. His study guides? Misleading. He seems like a nice guy that is clearly knowledgeable, but not everyone is a teacher. I will let the school know of his lack of effort, but you guys should know too.
I think Jack was a very good teacher. If you put in the effort for his classes, you will be successful. He is extremely caring and will help you if you let him! I recommend taking him FOR SURE.
He seems like a nice guy but I don't feel like he is a great teacher for this subject. I understand the material is hard, but he doesn't make it any better with his style. If you take this class just know the study guides aren't exactly on point, and start the final project early.
I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback on Jack and I'm so surprised. His study guides are really helpful - literally 70% of the questions are on the exam so you should pass with at least a C. Some are say that he's rude but he's not - he's just sarcastic. I had to study a lot but that's because the material was tough and passed with an A on my exams
Tests dont match study guides, formatting of online class all of the place and incoherent. Unreachable through email.
I took his online class, I didn't need to contact him for help. Directions in assignments are very clear. The exam questions comes MOSTLY from his lecture videos and study guides. Watch out for his final diet evaluation project, SUPER TIME CONSUMING. Did it last minute and took me 3 days straight! Overall, I enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
Take someone else. Study guides poorly corresponded with what was being tested. Bad test averages, and does not give constructive feedback.
To be honest the class isn't that hard, but it doesn't mean that you can slack. The class overall was kind of tedious and Jack was okay as a professor. It was actually kind of annoying because reading and quizzes are on another website, instead on Blackboard.
This is a tough course!!! I wouldn't recommend it if you've never had chemistry or biology. HOWEVER, this is a professor that loves what he does and is more than willing to help. Send him an email with a question and you will get an answer and not one of those "here is a link" search for the answer yourself kind of emails.
