Great guy and very concerned teacher, will make sure you understand stuff
Awesome, down to earth professor. Relates well to students and very bright.
Great professor!! He is clear and easy to understand.
Great class, knows his stuff, humorous, enroll now...
Interesting, sense of humor, genuinely interested in topic, clear expectations
Good teacher overall, but needs to understand all students are not tech savy
He makes his test just like the notes and homework. do it and you will get an A
funny guy, makes things easy to understand
good guy. sign up for him
works hard to teach
discrimate, if u're ever late even 2 mins late, u can't sign role sheet
cool guy...but ACCT is hard as hell.
Accounting sux, but Cathey makes it bearable. Take his class!
He's nice and a great guy to hang out with, but class is very hard
not very helpful towards tests, and tests count MAINLY in his class. Hard class
good teacher, easy to understand, helpful

works hard to teach
doesn't teach to exams, which makes the course even harder! Nice guy, though.

good teacher, easy to understand, helpful
hard class, monster exams, lectures dont go with exams.
cool guy, really hard class, doesn't teach to exams
arrogant
Very cocky. Acts like he's better than everybody else. Probably good in grad school but not principles. Doesn't prepare you for exams well enough.
Do the homework and you'll be OK.
very egotistical. don't think he likes teaching this class. exams are hard but he doesnt make them up himself. tons of homework.
Hardest class I have ever taken in my life! His teaching style does not go with exams. And way too much homework.
hard class and didn't give lots of extra credits. sometimes test questions didn't show in the notes. very arrogant b/c he usually teaches in graduate class. didn't care about his students. he considers students who didn't do good in this class are stupid.
Absolutelty Awful instructor, wants students to hate accounting. He is a exam nazi and wants to make it as difficult as possible.
ACCT is difficult to begin with. Best ACCT 2121 professor, helpful, good sense of humor, a overall nice guy. He is interested in the the topic, which makes it more interesting for the students
He knows what he is talking about. He teaches it well. BUT!! HE GIVES NO EXTRA CREDIT!!! And the only time he "curves" the grade is when he makes a mistake on making the exam!! He would be perfect if he would just give extra credit.
He is genuinely nice guy, ready too help, he just teaches a redundant, boring, somewhat difficult class.
Boring! I could understand a brick better. Attendence counts.
hes tough but i think he was a good teacher.. i made a b if you study the homework youll be fine... hes a good guy hes one of those cocky /nerdy guys but hes straight
Overall he is a good teacher. He has a genuine interest in accounting. He explains things well. He collects homework nearly everyday, which gives you a good buffer if you don't do so well on tests. Tests were moderatley difficult.
Okay teacher. You have to work your butt off for an A or a B. It's worth it though.

The subject is hard by nature, but he will help you out. Go to class, do your homework. Sutdy for the tests. They are hard but not nearly as hard as other professors give you. Ask questions, and he will help you and spend as much time as you need on it
ACCOUNTING IS HARD!!! BUT MR.CATHEY MADE A SIMPLER AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I TOOK HIM OVER SUMMER, BUT I FELT LIKE I AM TAKING IT IN REGULAR SEMSASTER, HE WAS GOING SLOW AND EASY. I GOT OUT WITH AN B. EXCELLENT ACCT 2121 TEACHER. TAKE HIMMM IF YOU HAVE CHANCE!!!! HIS THE BESTTTT!!! THANKS MR.CATHEY!!!!
He wants to make sure you understand the material and is genuinely concerned that everyone does well. Class moves at a good place. This is where Acct. gets DIFFICULT--at the 2nd half of the semester-- so don't slack off and get overly confident. Exam 1 was the only easy exam.
Hard class, but he tries to make sure everyone understands it to the best of his ability.
He is an OK professor, he explain things very well but he doesn't cover important details that if you don't ask you will have trouble doing homework or in the test. Test 1 is pretty much conceptual, test 2 is much harder and full of exercises, test 3 review all chapters and test 1 and 2.
First test was very easy, but you really have to do the homework assignments to do well on the second and third one. He keeps the lecture pretty interesting.
Took him over the summer, and was horrible. I would recommend Malmgren over this dude. He is smart and nice, but doesn't review for tests good.
HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. His class notes are online but are meaningless and all he does in class is read them to you. He doesn't work out any problems WITH the class which makes tests and homework very difficult. I studied 15 hours for the final and it wasn't pretty...
Don't take this class if acc. is your major!!!! You will hate it with this instructor!!! May be he is a good CPA but he is awful teacher. I hate myself for this class!!!
Doesn't seem to understand that accounting is taught through examples! Just reading the notes and working problems without involving the class in them is NOT how people learn accounting!
I had must learn alot in his class. Gives good examples. If you are not reading and doing the homework then accounting is not for you! Material does get harder.
He's a nice teacher but not great. Be read to teach your self the entire time.
Great teacher. Teaches you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Study homework problems that he gives you, listen in class, and you can easily make a B. EASILY!!!!
Knows his information but the way that it was delivered and taught in class was not efficient. You have to teach yourself from the book and can't rely on him lecturing in class.Granted this is college but I also pay for these classes and expect some sort of an education during class.
One of my favorite profs ever. Treats grad students as equals. Explains material and expectations clearly. Brilliant sense of humor. Made the analogy that a bank (that accepted TARP money) trying to attract customers is like walking into a bar and trying to pick up women right after you have announced to everyone that you have an STD.
This guy really knows his stuff. So glad to have him for Intermediate I. Goes over homework in class as well as examples. Notes are outlined and printed out on moodle. He is a great teacher and works hard to make sure students know the materials.
He uses the book and some slides, but the homework takes along time, and the test are pretty hard with some multiple choice, and then creating your own balance sheets, adjustments, etc.
Really knows his stuff. Uses real-life examples....
This is the worst professor I have had. I DO NOT recommend him. Will not assist you and if you try to talk to him during office hours (if he is even there), he says he is busy and has to finish stuff before class. Please take someone else. So not worth your time.
Don't take him, if you have alternatives. He will make you hate coming to school if you are not firm with your decision. He is not helpful at all. If you ask him for help with class problems, He will tell you acctg is not for everyone, even if you are making A's in other acct classes. He is so proud and talks like he is God that owns your destiny.
I'm a straight A student with rarely a B. This class is horrendous. Cathey is a very nice guy and extremely educated on the subject; however, his testing versus his teaching are horribly construed. This level of Acct is still heavily a learning curve for most students, and Cathey is not the professor for this. Take ANYONE else. Seriously.
Cathey is a great professor, but if you do not keep up with homework, reading andor attendance you will not pass! Normally I am an A or B student, but failed this class the first time I took it. Print his notes, attend class, and do the homework and you will understand the material and succeed in the class! Don't make this class harder than it is!
Accounting overall in general is tough. Go to class and follow the lectures, read the chapters before class, study as much as you can all the practice problems in the book and homework and you should do pretty good on the tests. Overall laid back professor and explained everything extremely well. Smartest accounting professor I've seen.
horrible...
The lectures are long and the material isn't very exciting, but the lecture guides make studying really simple. Do the homework several times to prepare for exams and rework the in-class problems. Exams aren't bad, but make sure you know the concepts for the MC questions. Overall, good professor, but boring course.
He has good real world examples! The test are muli choice and come from the books test bank (study it to pass plus and the end chapt problems ALL OF THEM!) Your grade come from 90% test 10% HW. Teaching style is his notes which are more concept based. This class is hard, pass rate is 50%. I would take someone else, I got an A if different prof.
Intermediate is a hard class with super hard subjects. Cathey makes it understandable and manageable. Overall great professor, he does a good job of making complex processes easier to understand. For success in exams memorize the class handouts/notes. Exam questions come from here. If you skip class you will struggle to understand the content.
Cathey is the worst Professor Ive ever had. I had a 4.0 before taking him. Grade comes almost entirely from 3 tests. Doesnt provide a study guide and tells students not to study homework problems because they dont match the tests. Rude and sarcastic. Said 50% of the class always fails yet spends more time discussing his life than on examples.
Take him only for this class. 3340 is easy enough that his teaching doesn't inhibit you. He is not helpful, takes forever to handle problems/inqueries. Speeds over necessary material. Test questions come from the back of the book questions, so know those. He fused at me in front of the class because I was taking notes instead of "paying attention".
The bad reviews makes me mad. Dr. Cathey is the most caring, patient, sweetest professor you will meet. I would write a book but no room. Wants to help you understand. Loves when you participate. Treats you as an individual. Study guide for test. Videos that give answers for labs. I emailed him about another class and he helped SO MUCH. Best!!!!!!!
Dr. Cathey is the head of the graduate MACC program but only taken once for this class- international financial reporting. Extremely dry material, but he does do his best to provide some humor. Grades on tests and two projects- tests are heavily lecture and problem based, study your guides hard. Projects werent awful, but were long. Nice guy.
Cathey is the best and really did a create job adjusting the course to online learning. We did had a couple of projects but he gave clear instructions on how to do well on them. Tests were on material covered in class so nothing too crazy. Most of all he is a great guy and always made lecture interesting!
Dr. Cathey is a really nice professor, his teaching style just doesn't work for me. He talks/ tells stories a lot and takes forever to get to the point. Way to much lecturing and not enough working out problems for me. Be ready to learn the material on your own, but he is always available to answer questions. HES BETTER THAN SOFSKY!!
He was disrespectful in responding to student questions in class. His email responses were often vague and unhelpful. During a major project, he told one student we needed to complete three documents and told another that we did not. Frequently he would tell us things after completing things that were necessary beforehand. A lot of simple mistakes.
I was nervous going into this class based on previous reviews. Maybe he has taken suggestions and improved over the years because I haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned. He provides class notes and step-by-step videos to complete excel labs. It may seem like a lot if you do not plan ahead but it's not. - Signed a serial procrastinator.
He is a great professor, he even summarizes the textbook and gives you handouts for each chapter, which are exactly what you need to study for the exam :) He is great accommodating you and curve exams, super knowledgeable and he enjoys teaching.
He's great. There is a lot of info, so be ready to study. His tests are based on what he taught in in class. He does try to keep this class lighthearted. Just put in the work and you will be fine.
Dr. Cathey was one of the chillest professors I've ever had. Have never seen him upset or without a smile on his face. His tests were extremely fair and lenient, as all questions came directly from the notes and there were no surprises on exams. The SUA project was annoying to do, but other than that, Cathey was awesome.
Dr. Cathey is truly an expert of Accounting, and professes his knowledge very well. There are no shortcuts to doing well in his class, but doing well on all of the tests and projects is highly attainable if you keep up with the class.
Dr. Cathey is an amazing professor! He has a lot of experience in a lot of different places and has stories that connect to almost every concept you will learn about in this course. His exams are long about 50 questions each, but he doesn't try to trick you with his exam questions. Everything that is on the exam is talked about in class.
Dr. Cathey is a great instructor- very nice, uses great real-world examples, and has engaging lectures. The workload with the SUA is a lot (and will be a lot no matter who you take for 3340), but he explains it clearly and well. Only complaint is the large (and very suddenly assigned) wave of SUA homework near the end of it. Overall, a solid class.
Dr. Cathey was an amazing professor for Accounting Information Systems. Majority of your grade is dependent on completing every assignment ON TIME. I suggest that you attend every class especially during the middle chunk of the semester where he helps guide you throughout the projects in this course. The lectures and material are easy to follow.
