Awesome teacher. He is very helpful and he wants you to do good!
He's a great professor especially if you've never had a music class. He makes sure you know what you need for the class. If you mess up really bad he lets you re-take the tests. You have to go to 2 concerts and write a review but it's cake. He is fun & you listen to music in class. Take Him!
He is a really nice guy, doesn't mind you skipping class alot, or at least he didn't mind me doing it. Very understanding and interesting.
Very nice professor. Makes you think the exams are hard but then grades them extremely easy. Gives you extra points if the whole class doesn't do so well. Easy A. Take him!
Super nice prof. Very easy class. I took music in high school and never got anything lower than 100% on an exam. Easy grader and makes sure everyone understands things before moving on. Treats students with respect, and kind of reminds me of Michael J. Fox. :)
Easy prof. He makes sure you understand things before he moves on and is very flexible. If you have to skip class, e-mail him and he'll e-mail the assignment to you. Sometimes the homework can be tedious, but the class is extremely easy. Tests are super, super easy. Good prof for a gen ed course.
One of the best profs I've had at GV. If you don't get something he'll go over it with you until you do and donsn't make you feel dumb. I've never had music in my life and I'm glad that I got him to start me out on it. Easy tests and an overall nice guy!! :)
Very nice guy, sticks to the facts and makes sure you know exactly what will be on the tests. Lots of listening and videos.
the class is intimidating at first if you have never had any music before; however, he is very helpful and writes tests easy for everyone to pass. I never had music before and I got an A, and I studied about 1/2 hour for each test. GREAT PROF!
Awesome professor, makes sure you know everything on the exams, no quizzes or extra homework. Show up and get A's.
Basically he just reads straight out of the book. If you go to class and take good notes you'll do fine on his tests, they're really easy.
Very easy class. Just follows the book so come to class and take notes and you'll do fine on the tests, they are easy!
Really nice guy! He gives clear facts and has no problem repeating anything you want repeated. He likes to help people in any way he can if they need it. I let him borrow my S&M Metallica CD because he was interested in it! He's also very patient. Good prof! Take the class!
Great guys, seems to know his stuff. Very interested in talking music with his students, not just the classical stuff, but all kinds. Tells you exactly what you need to know for tests, and papers are very easy.
Great Proff. Helpful and nice. Easy class. He tells you exactly what you need to know for exams. Your final is not accumulative. Have only 3 short papers to write - not for grade, just credit.
Good Professor and the class was easy. I didn't have to study super hard to get A's on the tests...just make sure you listen and take notes when he talks! Also you get out at least 30 minutes early usually!
I can tell that he really enjoyed music and that's what made the class fun. If you pay attention in class and take notes, it is easy to get good grades on the tests. He has you listen to music and watch a couple movies in class. Very good class.
GREAT PROF! Really knows his stuff and loves what he's doing...eager to help students out and a friendly guy. TAKE THE CLASS!
Great professor. Enthusiastic about the subject and knows what he talks about. Listen during class and take notes. He emphasizes what you should put in your notes. Tests aren't very hard and other assignments aren't too bad. Is very helpful when you have questions or concerns. Nice guy.
Great Professor...counts as GenEd and is very easy. Just go to class everyday and take notes and you will get an A. I never had to open the book because everything you needed to know about the test he told you by saying "you will need to know this for the test". Also you never get homework besides a couple very short papers and reading if u want
Excellent Professor! Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about music! Attendance is mandatory and you will not necessarily need your book because you take notes in class. Highly recommended.
Great Professor. One of the best ones I had. Easy exams. Just go to class and take notes. Very enthusiastic and fun. Nice Professor!~
Awesome teacher. Fun class
J. DeBoer is the man... easy class, almost no homework, easy tests, not boring at all. By far the best teacher I've had at Grand Valley, if i was a music major he would be my teacher all day every day baby. Do work J. DeBoer.
Really easy class! Can be boring at times but if you show up to class you will do fine on the tests. He tells you everything you need to know on a test.
Easy. as. pie. take him...itll be a BREEZE!
Extremely kind and understanding. I had the class at 8:30 in the morning which was horrible only because we had to listen to music which about put me to sleep every class. But Jack over all is very nice and very willing to help. Good hearted man
Love this guy. Fun, easy class. He let us out about 30 min early at least once a week. He's really understanding and doesn't worry about the small things. As long as you get the general idea, he's happy. Take him!
Jack is the man! He is very nice and willing to help out his students. There are 4 exams total and the final is not comprehensive. If you goto class and take notes you will do fine.
He's a great professor. By far the easiest one to take for MUS 100. He doesn't make you listen to the music and memorize it like all the other ones do. His tests are easy; he tells you what's going to be on it. Take notes in class and you'll ace it.
Great prof, if i was a music major, i would love to have him for 5 years!!! So enthusiastic and actaully you learn alot! Made class easy, study for tests and never HW!
He's AMAZING!!!He makes sure that everyone understands before moving on. He is very dedicated to making sure you understand. He's fun and easy going, and if you need a deadline extended, he's very flexible. I'd take him again and again.
Jack is by are one of the best proff's ive ever had. loves his student, even went to a kid (in my class) hockey game. 3 concert reports, e-z exams which are over the notes. Must attend class to get the notes necessary. You take notes, listen to music, and watch videos. BREEZE of a class! Def take DeBoer if u can!
Real easy going guy that enjoys to teach. He helps students alot and makes sure everone gets the material before moving on. You have to do 2 concert reports for this class and you have weekly homework. I didnt study that much for the tests and got an A but if you have some music background this is an easy Gen Ed for you.
Jack loves his students and is really encouraging. He helps you out so much and, he sounds like Casey Kasem. It's awesome. Even if you don't have music experience, you can still do well.
He is amaaaaazing just tae him and you will PASS helfull easy going just GRAET... I love him
honestly one of the nicest and most helpful teachers at grand valley. Take him and you'll pass!!
Great prof, he was my favorite this past semester. Very helpful and super flexible when it comes to due dates. If you need an easy but fun class take music 100 with him.
Super easy class. As long as you go to class and take notes you'll ace the tests. The two concert reports are graded on a check or check-minus scale and are really easy to throw together.
I love Jack! Very friendly and approachable and wants his students to succeed and enjoy music as much as he does. Great guy :-) Try and take him.
One time Jack "the man" Deboer dropped a dry erase marker in the middle of adressing the class..IT LANDED PERFECTLY STRAIGHT UP! wow can you say good professor. Take this class if you like a goodtime!
Very energetic and helpful! He really care about his students and music.
He is great super!! Easy class nice break from stressful classes
Jack is a great guy. Very approachable, friendly, and understanding. I thought the course was deceptively tough. I expected an easy A and I earned a B. 4 tests, no final. 2 concert reports, both are very easy. If you take him, GO TO CLASS!!! Tests were more difficult than I expected, so take good notes.
Absolutely loved him!! He is so incredibly passionate about what he teaches and is such a cool, approachable guy. He loves to see his students succeed, would love to answer any questions you might have and likes to get to know his students. Tests are easy, just go over your notes a couple times, no need for the book. I would take him again!
Straight baller. Loved this guy. Fun, SUPER easy tests, super easy class. You do two concert reports, just get those done asap and you can sit through the whole class and play solitaire. And, he's pretty cute for an older man, let's be legit.
Jack is the man. Loves the subject and is just an absolutely fantastic teacher. I would recommend him to anybody. Take him for an easy A
Jack is a great guy and prof. This was a Gen ed for me and it was an easy A. I suggest taking him!
Easy, he loves music and it shows. Made the class actually kinda fun and enjoyable. I would highly recommend him.
Professor DeBoer is such a cool cat! One of my favorite professors ever. You can tell how passionate about music he is, and really knows his stuff, but still keeps class super chill and interesting. He's very straightforward about what you need to know, and is never trying to trick you, because he wants everyone to succeed. Totally recommend him!
Jack is a really great guy and I genuinely like him. He moves pretty fast through lectures. If it's a movie day, skip it. He teaches you about music but doesn't bore you to death.
Jack is really good professor. The subjects covered in class were sort of boring but he tries to turn it and make it fun and interesting. We watch a few movies to kill time and he usually lets us out of class early too. And if you're legitimately interested in music, he would be a great professor for you. He's very knowledgeable and helpful!
Best Professor to choose for music 100
the best music professor here! Tells you what is on the exams and is super nice. The exams are shamefully easy. Easy A!
I put this class off for 3 years because I thought I would hate it. If I didn't have this professor, I am sure I would have done terrible but he made the class interesting and I actually didn't dread going to class! He is really understanding and really cares about his students too, I would definitely suggest taking his section!
Great Professor. He was really interested in making class fun. I recommend him, for sure an easy A if you look over the notes before the exam. He always gives study guides and matches his exams to what he teaches in lectures.
Great Professor! He's very passionate about what he does, and he cares about his students. The class structure is simple too. As long as you show up, take notes, and study for the tests you'll be happy with your grade. I've developed an interest in music from the Baroque and Classical eras because of his class. Take this prof. if you can!
Class is simple and set up to keep you wanting to come to class. Tests and assignments are very strait forward. Highly recommended!
His class is so easy and never thought I'd ever say it but he made me enjoy classical music. He is such a funny nice guy if he see him outside of class he treats you like a friend and he's just so nice! Not many professors are like that. His 4 tests are really easy as long as you study your notes. I am sad that i won't have him as a professor again
Great Prof. Take for the easy A. 4 exams, 2 short papers. On 3 of the 4 exams, I got 100%. Also a great guy who loves music. Will keep you interested and makes the subject easy to learn. Highly recommended!
If you don't get an A in this class, then you weren't trying. Class averages on the exams were often above 90. He does a good job of emphasizing what will be covered on the exams.
Awesome prof.
The class itself is really boring so I wouldn't take it in the morning. He tells you exactly what is on the tests. Attendance is important though. Really nice guy.
DeBoer makes a boring class pretty interesting. There are four exams and 2 concert reports. You have some listening to do for the exams but they are always easy. he reviews before all exams so you know what will be on them. I did not think I would like this class but DeBoer made it fun and worthwhile.
The Professor was nice, but he does not give exam reviews. You really need to show up for class and take notes to get the information you need.
Favortie professor, this class was a basic lecture but he made it very interesting and I actually didn't mind waking up and going to it. He always is there to help you with anything you don't understand and emails back quickly and personally. Exams were all very easy and the concert reports weren't as bad as they seemed! Overall, awesome professor.
Awesome professor! He loves what he is teaching and he shows enthusiasm towards the class. Never had many assignments, you just need to be sure you look over notes to do well on tests. He is willing to help with anything. I would love to have him again.
Lectures all class but plays lots of music as well. He was funny and had lots of energy. He really cared about the students and the subject material. Need to study to pass but tests are pretty easy.
He made music fun. I don't know much about music but i learned alot. tests were MC and about 3-5 fill in blanks. If i didn't record the lectures i would probably not gotten an A because he goes threw lecture pretty fast. i re-listened and rewrote notes. I didn't have the book. everything on exam is what he says. he is nicecaring.
Maybe the nicest guy of all time. Tests aren't hard, but you have to put some effort into studying. His voice is a combination of Casey Kasem and Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad, so that's awesome. I would very much recommend him.
Super nice prof, tests are easy if you take a little time to study. Makes learning about the history of music actually interesting. Most of the time spent in class is listening to music.
DeBoer is a fantastic man. Makes music interesting and easy for non-music majors. If you do not get DeBoer, do whatever you can to get into his class, otherwise you'll regret it.
Great prof- makes an otherwise boring class somewhat interesting. Go to lecture or else you won't do well on exams, he doesn't post notes or power-points online! You take 4 exams and write 2 music concert reviews and that's about it. Pretty hard to fail his class.
Made what I thought I was going to be a dull class pretty interesting. Very clear on what to expect on exams. Take some time the night before and go over his study guide and you should be fine. The two papers were pretty easy to do, seemed like he just wanted you to prove you actually went to a performance. Overall, it should be an easy A
Thought music class was going to be very boring and hard since I could really care less about learning about it. But he made easy and lectures weren't terrible. Goes over an outline the day before the exam and states things that may show up on the tests.
Such a great professor! Lectures are long but mostly because I took him for a gen ed requirement. His passion for music is definitely contagious and makes you eager to learn. I would highly recommend him for MUS 100. Take advantage of his office hours for reviewing for an exam, VERY helpful!
THE BEST PROFESSOR you can take for music. Such a fun, exciting guy. He's passionate about music so his enthusiasm makes class less boring. He's very laid back and helpful. Easy A if you take good notes and listen in class. Definitely recommend him for your ART Gen. Ed.
MUS 100 is super easy show up to class and take notes. Tells you what will be on each exam and minimal studying is required. Easy A
Professor Deboer is such a nice guy and really loves teaching music. He does take attendance and it is part of your grade (20%). Also, his test are not hard if you study the outline and go to class. There are 4 tests and 2 concert papers to write. He knows not everyone is a music major so he helps out as much as he can! Great guy!! TAKE HIM!
Take this professor!! He was the best and he was so helpful for people who are not musically inclined at all. I ended up really enjoying the class itself and I'm glad I took this instead of art or theater
Great professor. If you're taking MUS 100, take it with him. Clear grading, good lectures, fair tests. Overall, great class.
Love prof. Deboer!! You can tell that he really enjoys teaching music, and it shows in our grades. 4 tests, 2 concert reports. Really easy grader. Tests are easy if you go to class and take notes. He gives note outlines so you know what you should be taking notes on. Great guy, if you have to take MUS TAKE DEBOER!!
Great professor, he makes what you need to know very clear and as long as you study for an hour a couple times before the test and do the reports you will have no problems getting an A. It is a very fun and easy class. One of my favorite professors at grand valley
Great prof, makes a subject that could be boring or difficult into a class you can enjoy. Would definitely recommend Prof. Deboer.
Prof Deboer is very nice and teaches clearly. It can be boring but the material is what it is. 4 exams 2 concert reports and some online textbook homework. Not a bad class for a gen ed.
I don't really understand music or anything but Prof. DeBoer was great! He realizes that a lot of people are just taking it to fulfill their gen eds so he doesn't make it too hard, and class gets out a little early most of the time.
Easy A! Looking for an interesting gen ed with easy tests and not much homework? This is it. Very chill prof with a passion for jazz music. Spends most of the class playing music with some lectures in between. Tests are very straight forward and only require small amounts of studying. Rarely any homework.
One of the easiest classes I have taken! If you show up and take decent notes, you will pass. Exams are black and white from the notes. A couple of online "quizzes", but they take five minutes. Have to write 2 concert reports, but they are credit or no credit. He is also a cool guy so class isn't terrible to sit through. You usually get out early!
Easiest US Diversity credit available. Great class if you're interesting in developing a taste for jazz, and an easy A if not. Three two-page essays that are basically credit/no credit. Exams are easy and he provides study guides. I definitely recommend this class.
Took Mus100 and Jazz History with him, and by far my favorite professor I have ever had! He is so kind and caring for his students. He gives clear outlines for his exams. Never had a professor who genuinely cared about students the way he does! Highly Recommend!
Prof DeBoer is a great guy, he cares a lot about his students and makes the classes fun to learn. Jazz History was an easy class but he made it enjoyable to learn. He also gives a big extra credit presentation at the end of the sem.
I am not a fan of music literature at all so the class was quite boring, but Jack does a good job of providing you with the material you need to succeed.
Literally the best guy ever. Easy music credit and an outstanding teacher. This was my second class with him and I looked forward to go to his class.
This professor is super nice. All you need to do is show up and write down what he writes on the board. He tells you what's going to be on the test and it's almost all multiple choice. It was sometimes boring but I liked most of the material. We watched a lot of short movie clips. If you like jazz or want a good grade, definitely take this class.
Jack is the nicest guy ever, super caring, funny, and very helpful. I had him a year ago and it was a great class. Lots of fun and I learned so much more than I had expected.
Prof. DeBoer is the most approachable prof at GV. This guy is super laid back and cares about students. His lectures are straight to the point and the material makes sense, theres only 2 papers and they're both just music reviews, very easy. Don't bother buying the textbook, you never need it. He tells you the essay questions that'll be on tests.
Jack is one of the nicest people I have ever met! Always in a great mood and has a bright smile and just makes your day better. Hes an expert in what he teaches and makes the class very easy to succeed. Gives outlines for every exam and barely any homework in the class. Definitely take him!! He made a gen ed very fun
He deeply cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is realistic. I recommend him for any MUS100 course, he makes it fun and interesting.
This class was very interesting and the Professor is a bit old-schooled, but such a cool guy and is very engaging with the way he lectures! Go to class, take notes, watch out for online quizzes, and you should be set for an A! You also have to attend two concerts and write two reports, but if you ask him for clarification, you will be good.
Super nice guy, pretty understanding and does good lectures. Always got out of class early, pretty easy to get an A or B on the 4 exams if you just go to class. Takes 8% off grade if you miss more than twice though. Not bad for a 100 level, wants you to be excited to learn and tries his best!!
Prof Deboer understands that this is a gened and that most people are taking this class for an art credit because they have to. This prof really makes this class fun and easy. Show up to class, take notes, & study tbh. This class was easy to pass and this prof is so genuine. There wasnt much workload either. He doesnt post the notes so be prepared.
This course isn't super easy but it's not super hard. IF YOU DON'T STUDY YOU WON'T PASS! Exams are worth 80% of your grade and there are 4 of them. 50 questions each, multiple choice, and a listening portion. 2 concert reports; go to a concert and basically analyze it.
I really enjoyed Professor DeBoer. He is really passionate about the history of music and it shows. You take 4 exams in total and do 2 concert reports. Pretty easing going class, he gives great feedback on concert report. Great professor, highly recommended.
This class is definitely made for students with a musical ear. He is a very kind Professor and wants everyone to do well. You have to go to two concerts and write about them for a grade. Test aren't difficult, harder for students who aren't very interested in music (like myself). This isn't a class id miss, doesn't post notes for people who miss.
He is very old-fashioned in the way he teaches, but he does provide outlines of the notes. I strongly recommend attending class, as that is the only way to get class content (unless you have a friend in the class). The exams are not difficult, but you do need to put in the time and study for them, otherwise, they may be challenging.
Prof DeBoer obviously cares about his students. His lectures were pretty simple and easy to understand. You do not have to do much to pass his class. There are 4 exams and if you study, you will do great. 2 concert reports which are easy. Attendance is mandatory and graded. There are 2 unexcused absences.
