sit in the front!
He has the class notes one the web so you dont even have to go
OKay teacher...goes over things over and over again! lecture is slow but has a lot of info
Lots of material to cover so he goes fast, but very helpful in making himself available for office hours. He and Dr Ishida taught the course together - great team!
Enthusiastic and easy going. The lectures are a little boring, and he makes some topics seem more confusing than they really are. Very helpful in office hours though!
He tries but he can be confusing. He likes complicated sentence structures (that can be cut down to 3 words). You don't use your book (unless you need clarification) and there's no homework.
He likes turtle shells and smurfs, but besides that failed both midterm and final but still managed a C because of high essay scores. Never went to class.
He likes to scare students by saying that the average scores on the midterm and final are failing, but I only went to half the classes and got an A. If you can, get Van as a TA because she is wonderfully...go to her review session and ace the exams.
Exams are impossible. Think of it as 28 questions condensed into 50 true/false that are really hard. Lectures are very difficult to follow along too. But he tries really hard to help students out though, still tough class and way of teaching though.
He teaches in a very weird way that's hard to understand. His tests are too tricky. but don't blame it entirely on him. blame the course too. he's forced to ask 28 questions that must address the 25 lectures you've had since the 1st midterm. STUDY often.
He definately knows his NPB. The course itself is challenging, so study everyday and go to office hours if you have questions. Tests were hard but a bit easier than Ishidas. Must understand material throughly/also memorize notes.
He was a better teacher than Ishida! Lectures were completly by power point so the diagrams were a little weird. The exams were nearly impossible. He would give you sevreal situations and ask which of the following were accurate.
Great teacher, willing to help you with anything at anytime of the day. Very passionate about teaching.
the exams were really hard and tricky, like pick all that are right or choose ab, ac, bc, de...etc. hard.
Between the uhms and mkays, if you can get what he says good for you. He is NOT the best teacher...he can't even speak one sentence w/out saying uhm a million times. The class is OK but if don't like a teacher who says uhm more than he actually lectures, don't take this class with him!
The average ratio of ums to words per sentence is probably about 50:50. Other than his confusing and fragmented way of saying things, he really is a nice guy who wants to help you out. Tough tests. Office hours are the key if you want to do well.
yes, its true he does say uhm alot. I still haven't decided whether i like him or not. I think he does a fair job of explaining the material. Although, I think he makes things harder than they really seem. He'll seem easy first, but he's just not very good at pacing the material but he's fair.
Great proffesor! very helpful and approachable. is willing to help you with whatever you need help with! wants you to do well in his class. moves slow at times but gives you lecture notes ahead of time to follow... id take his class again anytime!
He is very helpful and very nice! The tests are a little hard but the curve does help. The papers are what help your grade the most so dont slack off on those cuz they will make up for terrible test scores. Oh, and go to office hours if u need help, cuz they really helped me!!!
Great teacher. He is such a nice guy, his tests are hard. but if you go to office hours you will be able to do better on the test. Of course this course is very hard, but going to OH helps understand the MT questions
Great professor. The class is not easy, but he has a lot of office hours and is really approachable. He also is wiling to make appointments if you have more questions.
Great teacher. He explains the material very very well, but, he has an impossible amount of material to memorize! Tests are a bit hard, but, you'll do fine if you go over his lecture notes after EVERY lecture.
a Fantastic professor, one of the best I have ever met! The material is challenging but very interesting. Office hour is extremely helpful
so helpful, his midterm questions are very clear (unlike his counterpart Ishida). class is TOUGH and dont take it unless you have less than 15 units and no life because it will take up literally 20 hours a week EASY. Keep up and the class is cake, fall behind and pray you pass
Don't take him unless you have to. His exams are always very tricky and unclear
folks, to do well in goldberg's class, first, go to it, second, go to it and third, go to it.
This was one of the best professors that I have ever had at Davis. He was very clear in his explainations, and was very enthusiastic during lectures. He kept my interest during the lecture. This is a very difficult course with tons of information, but he did a good job with keeping it bearable.
Wonderfull person. Tests are not as bad as people say. Just know the slides and you will get a near perfect score. Will bend over backwards to help you outside of class and he writes some of the best rec. letters around.
Horrible teacher. Very unclear. Do NOT follow the slides because he doesn't refer to them. The tests are very difficult and the format of them makes you bound to fail. Says "um..." constantly.
EXTREMELY hard. Teaches this class like an upper division biology class, when it's just bio10. Supposed to be a class for non-science majors and it's very, very HARD. Basically, just teaching the class way too hard for people to even do mediocre in the class. Tests are VERY hard; its average was a 36%...... Hopefully the cuve saves us all...
VERY HARD!!!its supposed to be bonehead bio and even bio majors couldnt tae the test...his curve is all screwed up and he is not helpful...if u can change professors because u will get screwed at the end...slides ae ver scattered and the class is unorganized...he is absent most of the time and expects u stiil to know everything-HATed IT!!
unfortunetly for those who thought this class woul be easy because it was for non science majors got fooled. it was HARD, unorganized...and super borrrrrinnngg but then again its biology. he is a nice guy and tries to be helpful..but there is only so much he can do. he is unorganized and his slides are at times helpful..
Lectures are so boring and very confusing and convoluted. He rambles a bunch and goes off topic so you don't really know what is going to be on the test or not. The tests themselves were hard but always curved down a lot because so many people bomb them. The paper really helps your grade
Helpful in OH, but surprisingly difficult course. Complex powerpoints, go over notes after every lecture. Tests are mostly essay, make sure you understand stressed material THOROUGHLY.

Difficult course- lots of material to know. Study hard, go to class. Lecture's can get confusing, tests are extremely hard- important to study more than you ever had before. Emphasizes going to office hours for extra help. Lectures sometimes dry and long.
Hard class but if you keep up and go to every class (5 days a week) then you'll do ok. The tests are very difficult and a little unfair but it is somewhat doable. Make sure that you understand what he's talking about or else you will be lost from then on.
I think the "Mmm" and "m-kays" are exaggerated in other comments...he does not do it THAT excessively. This class was freaking hard. It's just one midterm, a paper, and a final...but dear lord was the final hard. The average for the class final was only 55%...mostly essays. However, the grading on the paper was very generous, turning my F to a C.
don't bother buying the book. don't ever used it because he doens't assign readings. plus, everything is on the slides. anyways, he's really boring.. the ta's (guy) has bad handwriting. don't get him. u won't learn anything. amy is better.
awesome class. study hard. not too shabby. goldberg is a caring guy. he's fun to talk to!!
Excellent Professor. He cares very much about the students. Holds office hours 6 times a week. In class, if things get confusing, go to office hours - he comes up with a bunch of different analogies to help if you don't understand. Understand the logic and progression of things to do well with his test questions. Highly recommend Goldberg!
I took this class without taking any of the prerequisites. Please don't be discouraged if you havent taken the prereqs - they really don't matter! Study by not just simply memorizing the material, but rather, making connections between what you're reading - it'll strenghten the synapses in your brain and help you ace his tests!!! Recommended!
Dr. Goldberg is a great person. His lectures are clear and very well organized. Even though he can repeat himself a lot, it helps students learn the subject. He's very passionate about helping students and will set up additional office hours if needed. I would definitely recommend this professor!
Extremely knowledgable, and seems to truly care about your learning.
Book was useless. He makes the first midterm really hard because the info is so technical. I recommend going to every class for the first half, and studying super hard for because chances are everyone will bomb. He scaled our midterm to a medium of 55%. Also, when you write the paper, follow directions carefully. I got 100% for doing so.
don't buy the book, its just a waste of money, you don't even use it. Test material is on all the slides, go to class, section is mandatory. do well on the papers it will save you. test are somewhat difficult if you don't study for them
he is the best.. very articulate and clear in his explanations.
lectures are very clear and helpful. he clearly loves teaching and that makes the class very interesting
This is supposed to be a class for non-majors, but it is extremely difficult! He has to curve all his tests way down b/c every does so badly on them. Make sure really put effort into the paper because it could be the only thing to save your grade. He is kind of intimidating, which makes it hard to ask questions about the confusing material.
Dr. Goldberg is very knowledgeable about the material and has very organized/detailed lecture notes. Make sure you understand the lecture notes, go to office hours to clarify questions, and use his practice exams to gauge your understanding of the material and you will get an A (like myself). Definitely not an easy A, but a very good class overall.
Dr. Goldberg is the best. He remembers your name, is very helpful and kind. His tests are hard, but totally fair. Learn the way he teaches: scenarios. Go to his office hours!! He is immensely helpful, and I found his office hours to be the most effective study time of the whole quarter. Highly recommend.
Dr. Goldberg can be so boring and confusing during lecture, but if you study his notes and really know them, you will do fine on the test. His tests are hard, but he won't put anything on the test that wasn't on the notes. He has tons of office hours and really wants his students to do well. Dr. Goldberg isn't easy but I still recommend him
Goldberg is a great professor. He makes the lectures as interesting as possible and genuinely wants students to do well. For exams, do all of the "Questions to Consider" in his lecture notes and you'll be set. It's helpful to listen to the podcasts because he tells you exactly what types of questions he'll ask on the exam. Definitely recommended.
Class not hard if you know high school bio well, if not it's hard in the way that the material makes you sleepy, tries to make bio sound interesting but I still feel like falling asleep every single time, paper is VERY easy graded if you got the right TA; he's VERY disorganized, but he's main plus is that he CARES VERY MUCH, so go to him for help!!!

Clear but incredibly boring lecturer. Lectures consist of massive but organized blocks of powerpoint text with the occasional illustration from the textbook. His test questions are neither easy nor fair; I studied hard but still had to make wild guesses most of the time. My class grade was saved because it's team taught with Bautista & Weidner.
He was incredibly unhelpful. To say is lecture style is lackluster is to insult the term lackluster. He failed over 150 students. 20 passed with C or above. Avoid him at all costs. Take it at a local community college if you can!
He posts ALL of the lecture notes online and only uses information on those notes. All of his exams were multiple choice this quarter (Winter 09) so that helped a bit. I haven't talked to him personally, but he seems like a really helpful man. Goldberg provides great analogies if you don't initially understand the concepts.
hes a very nice guy and is willing to help to clarify things you dont get. it really isn't hard if you study and go to class.
While you may know everything prior to the test, the wording on his tests proved to be difficult to decipher - MUCH more difficult than on his NPB101 tests. This may be because he writes the tests without another professor to proof it - oftentimes npb101 is taught with multiple teachers. That being said, the class was difficult but extremely cool
Got a 55 on the first midterm (along with pretty much everyone else). Went to the TA's office hours (VERY HELPFUL!! Philip Matern) and aced the second midterm and final. Only ended up with a B in the class though. No curves on any of the tests (MC & essay Qs) or the final grades. Think twice before taking this class... it was TOUGH. Good luck!
Horrible class. Horrible teacher. All he does is say "umm uh mmkay" the entire lecture. Tests are hard. Avoid this class if you can.
The tests was hard and the lecture was boring. And there was a lot of "ums". Only use 3 tests to grade the class.
Horrible teacher. Tests are way too hard and full of trick questions. He doesn't help at all. Only take this class if you absolutely need to.
He's a nice guy and reiterates the main points, but he words the test strangely which leads to confusion and often has to regrade the tests because of the way students interpret things, only 3 tests though so if you burn hard on one your SOL
AVOID this class. No curve and super confusing, hard tests. Lectures are immensely dull.
Hardest class I've taken at Davis. His lectures are extremely boring and tests are ridiculously hard (he does play "gotcha" games, don't let him tell you otherwise)! He is bad at responding to e-mails!! Only take this class if it's absolutely necessary, if not AVOID it! And if you must take it, utilize his office hours!
I want to become a biology teacher, and he C+'ed my first Biology class. He says he doesn't play "gotcha games" on the test. The second and third time he said this, I rolled on the floor laughing. The test requires you to understand the details of Biology like you have NEVER understood before. I failed the first midterm in this fashion.
Goldberg's hard, but if you go to office hours he's really nice and helpful. Tests are hard, so you have to work hard and prepare well for them. I actually ended up really liking this class because I feel like he made me earn my grade.
This class is unnecessarily hard for a non-major biology class. During lecture, he just keeps on rambling about random facts. He is knowledgable but not a good lecturer.
Horrible. Absolutely unnecessarily difficult for a supposedly easy class. he makes the midterms so unbelievably difficult and you have to learn every single detail. If you can, just try to take the online class
Dr. Goldberg is an amazing teacher! Very kind & helpful at OH's and easily one of the best professors I've had at Davis. The people that don't like him are the people looking for an easy A, rather than actually learning. His tests are super hard and require you to actually apply concepts. This class is hard but well worth the work.
He has got to be the slowest, most redundant professor ever! It takes about 15 minutes to get through one slide...I know "repetition leads to retention" but you're better off just listening to his podcasts so you can skip all the rambling. You end up with about an hour's worth of material in a two-hour class. GAH!
Worst professor I've taken so far at Davis. Goes way too fast and doesn't clarify anything. Uses all technical terms so if you don't have your anatomy down then you'll be lost the whole time.GET OUT NOW!! Bautista is MUCH better ( he was my other professor lecturing)
Extremely boring, repetitive lectures that make me want to pull my hair out.
He explains the material in a way that is needlessly complex. The average on his midterm was 54%. The tests don't test knowledge as so much as they test your ability to decipher his cryptic wording. He's a nice guy, but stay away. You have been warned.
Definitely understand the concepts. If something doesn't make sense, do not move on! You WILL be asked to integrate that knowledge during the test, their questions are very dense. Physiology is about a confluence of events for one goal, understand that and you'll do fine. DO NOT spend your time memorizing, this class isn't about regurgitating terms
Jack Goldberg is an excellent lecturer; come to class well prepared and rested & you will learn a ton! His style is a little rough but he's genuine and will explain anything if you ask; I had a great time in his class, I hope you do too!
AWFUL. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. it's supposed to be bio for non-science majors, but he teaches it like it's an upper division NPB class and we all somehow know everything there is to know about biology. He is incredibly smart but very bad at teaching. he assumes we understand difficult concepts that we've never heard of. tests were ridiculous.
Prof. Goldberg is a hard lecturer, no doubt, but he is a really genuine guy that will go out of his way to help answer your question and clarify any unclear point. Office hours are always packed! Material is intense, but VERY applicable and interesting. Test questions are complicated, but he will throw-out questions the majority of the class missed
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This class is way too difficult for a bio for non-bio majors class. He doesn't even curve the tests even though the highest grade on one of the midterms was an 82%. Ridiculous. He's not articulate at all; lectures are full of "umm"s and "uhh"s and "mmmkay"s. Such a joke.
These ratings are out of line and extremely harsh! Jack Goldberg is a great lecturer! Yeah, so he does stutter every once in a while, but he still gets his point across and he provides great anecdotes. Whenever he discusses new topics, he integrates the old ones, thereby providing constant built in review. Plus, he's a very likeable and nice guy.
Goldberg knows his stuff and he genuinely cares that his students learn the material. He consistently asked during summer session if he was going too fast or if we understood what he was talking about. He held office hours nearly every day. He strongly encourages students to ask questions. He also wants to get to know his students. A true class act
Do yourself a huge favor and STAY AWAY. His lectures are nothing but rambling that you are required to decipher for the exams. Exam questions usually give two or three statements, then answers look like "1, 1 & 3, 1 & 2" etc. Very unfair exam questions and completely unhelpful rambling lectures make his class one to avoid at all costs.
He is a nice guy BUT a horrible lecturer. Exams were way too hard. It was harder to understand his questions than the material. It doesn't matter if you know your materials, what matters is if you understand what he is asking. His ?'s are multp. choice. so you have a choice between "statement A&B; A&C,B &C, all of the above or none" know details!
He made the class really boring and confusing. One of the worst prof in my list
He does stutter, say uh and um a lot and is a slow lecturer. But he is always willing to help and is, for the most part, clear in his lectures. The guy knows his stuff and if you can get past his lecture mannerisms and slow pace, you will learn. Downside is his exams consist of A, B, C, A&B, A&C, B&C type questions. Really good guy and professor.
