Extremely tough teacher. Strict grader. OK teacher in my opinion.
has no clue what hes doing...cant explain lessons that i learned in high school...can barely hear him...can barely read what he writes...just a horrible bore
what is he saying?
When I saw his ratings I thought he'd be bad...These ratings aren't true...His tests are very easy, exact same thing as review sheet, and his very nice, and helpful, I would give him 5 stars if I could understand him...but otherwise his an awesome and easy teacher...
very nice man. u dont need to buy the textbook cause he gives handouts that covers all the formulas and sample Qs. tests are easy, almost the same as on review sheet. i personally cant imagine an easier-to-pass-with-a-decent-grade math class
He's a really nice professor, he prints out a copy of every lesson for you. He's not strict about homework at all--you can hand it in at any point, as long as its before the exam, and you'll get extra credit on the test. Test are identical to the review sheets he gives you. Class can be boring, esp if you can't understand his accent but he's nice.
GO TO TUTORING. Nice guy but can't understand what he says because he has a heavy Asian accent. He gives straightforward handouts with the lessons & review sheets before exams. Go over those & you'll be fine for the tests. Probably won't learn anything in class but if you put in the effort, it's an okay class.
He has a very thick Chinese accent, so I can't really tell what he is saying. He gives reviews that have the same type of questions as the test itself (helpful). Class is mandatory, but seems like a waste of time because I don't understand anything he says and he's handwriting isn't top notch either. Please, DO NOT TAKE.
Alright, im gonna be legit, he cannot teach!he has an accent that uncomprehendable. Besides the fact he cannot teach, its an extremely easy class to get an A. All u have to do, is study the questions he gives on the review sheet, and you will be set for the test. The hw is not mandantory at all, however if u do them u get extra credit on the exams.
This professor is really nice and extremly fair. Just come to class and do your hw and you wil get a A.
University Calculus II. The man is entirely incomprehensible, not to mention illegible handwriting. He sends out a sign-in sheet at the start of class. If you're in the neighborhood just go and sign it, then just leave. Homework is definitely recommended, probably the only thing that might help you pass. Overall, take him if he's your last option.
please please do me a favor and do not take this class. you will end up dropping it or it will hurt your gpa. he is very unclear both both his speaking and writing on the board. be prepared for alot of tutoring
Easy A if you show up and do the homework. He's a nice guy but boring and extremely hard to understand- just smile and nod. If you want to learn math, don't take him but if you want an easy A, go for it!
Although Dr. Chan is kinda hard to understand,it becomes easier as the semester goes by.He's very helpful and care about the students, and hes always available to help during office hours. He tries very hard to be funny, and if you dont find it funny, just smile with him to give him the impression.I recommend him if you willing to work w/ open ears.
He is really unreasonable, you would think the fact that he is really hard to understand would be made up in your grade, but wrong! If you really want to learn math then dont take him.
Everyone wanted to switch out after the 1st day of class bc of his accent. But here is the truth: hw that gives 5 points extra points on test, easy midterm where half the class that studied his review sheet got 100, and a pretty tough final with huge curve. in his tests, u can pick 10 out of 15 questions..no other class is easier besides constantine
Towards the end of the year, people cut his class like there is no tmmrw.Alot come to sign in or ask friends to do it but lolz, attendance sheet is just for show. He has heavy accent and ppl all want to run away after 1st class but hey, this class is an EASY A bc of midterm and hw that gives extra 5 points! final is tough, not gonna lie.
Pros: EXTREMELY nice. Cares about students. EASY tests (almost identical to the review sheet, which you go over). Extra credit on tests if you do homework (+10). Cons: Language barrier makes learning near impossible. Overall: Memorize the answers to your review sheet and hand in your homework, and you'll get an A.
He is a really nice guy, but do no take him unless you want to teach yourself calculus.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. The truth is if you do the homework and hand it in, extra credit. The tests are the same problems he goes over (he gives 1-2 days of review) with different numbers. It may be hard to understand or read the board but sit in the front. If you put in some work you'll get a lot out, not just a grade.
He's not entirely bad. He's genuine with the help he provides during his office hours, but his heavy accent truly has an impact on learning in the class. Do the hw and pay attention to how he does works out the problems, he gives you all the notes.
He is very hard to understand when he speaks but definitely knows his math. He counts Hw as extra credit and always tries to help. He also basically gives the exact test out on his review sheets.
Nice professor, tries to crack a joke sometimes. Textbook is only useful for doing the hw problems. Gives out copies of outlines of class notes/hw/review sheets/etc. Exam questions are very very similar to review questions. Has a HEAVY accent but sit in the front and you'll understand him better
this guy cannot teach, i sat in the front of the class and i still couldnt manage to understand what he was writing nor what he was saying, if u have patients and willing to work hard take it, i DO NOT recommend
Yes, he has a huge accent. Yes, most of the times, you will not learn directly from him. He tries to be funny once in a while. But you should still take his class because the exams are really easy. His review sheet is the same exact format (he just changes the numbers) as the test. If you don't have other options, you should be glad to have him.
His accent makes it hard to understand him. His notes are printed for you, bu you can't read his handwriting either. His review/hw questions are the same as the test. Go to a tutor or don't take his class.
His accent is HUGE and he speaks extremely low. If you don't sit in the front two rows, you won't hear him. If you're good at math and can learn on your own, take him, his tests aren't that bad. If you're not good at math, definitely don't take him. Half the class dropped out after the first test
Took him for Calc 2. The course itself is difficult but Chang makes it that much more. If you are not good at teaching yourself, you may need an extreme amount of tutoring. He speaks softly and will not help. His assumption that his tests are not difficult is false, YOU MUST STUDY.
Makes pre-calc difficult. Mumbles way through classes and doesn't stop to ask questions. Laughs when you ask for help. Textbook necessary for homework problems (which there are a lot of) AVOID.
Extremely nice, but very hard to understand, very helpful in office hour IF you can understand him. Home work is extra cred. Exams are the same problems as the homework. Grades with a curve.
Two words: teach yourself. He's EXTREMELY hard to understand at times, & like other reviews have stated, he mumbles. He gives a lot of homework but it's great extra credit for exams, and his exams are identical to his review sheets. He's a sweetheart but his teaching style..smh. I wouldn't have survived this course without online tutorials
Do not take his class. He has a very thick accent, speaks very fast. And if you ask him to further explain anything he will repeat exactly what he has said the same way. I could not understand a thing he said, and if he teaches things way more complicated than it should be. Luckily i took AP calculus in high school. Otherwise i would have failed.
This guy is terrible. I remember on the firs day of class I was like what the hell is he saying? He is VERY hard to understand. His handwriting is also VERY hard to understand. In a matter of minutes he would fill up the entire board and you would have no clue what he did. Calculus is already hard, he does not make it easier.
DO NOT TAKE. Too difficult to understand. He rushes through a lot of things and does not explain clearly. A nice person but in all honesty, he's a bad professor. Tests are similar to his review sheets but still very difficult. I was lucky to get a passing grade.
All right he does have an accent and isn't the clearest when explaining things but he has a heart of gold. Go to him if you need help. He also gives homework as extra credit and grades you with a curve. You might hate him at first but once you get to know him, he's a very caring professor. He's not the best out there but he's decent. :)
Jackie Chan is a decent guy with a sense of humor. Unfortunately, I could not understand a single joke, let alone his lectures. Calc 2 is extremely demanding and with this professor you will be forced to teach yourself 100% of the material. Stubborn man. Attendance mandatory. Grading policies unclear. Lectures unclear. Accent as thick as his skull.
Please, do not take. I read the other reviews and I took the class anyways and ending up failing the first course in my entire school career. You can't understand ANYTHING he says and he'll move very fast with the material. One time someone asked a question and he drew an eyeball on the board saying use your eyes Trust me I wasn't being lazy either
Professor Chan is a kind, funny guy. Sadly, his lectures are tough to understand and I only passed because the reviews are pretty much identical to the exams - USE THEM.
Jackie Chan is the man! I took him for Calc 1 & 2. Got A's in both. The secret is to do the homework, and then study the review sheet. He selects homework questions, changes the numbers, and that is the test. And he gives you all the review questions far in advance. Do those questions, learn the patterns, ace the test. And PAY ATTENTION.
First thing you gotta know is that he has a thick accent. But you get use to it he's really funny. Now about his teaching -.- he's horrible. my class had about 8 students so he's always in you face asking you questions. He goes through chapter in 5 min. and while hes writing on the bored he's whispering how to do it so its barely audible.
Basically you're on own to learn calculus. You can't understand a SINGLE WORD he says! He moves so quickly that you never really know what's going on! Tests look similar to the review sheet but are really hard! Tutoring may shed some light but not always. Avoid him if you can!
Simply put: It's calculus. If you have a hard time with higher level math courses then the course will be difficult no matter what professor you have. That being said, Professor. Chan is intelligent individual who knows his stuff. It was an enjoyable class. The tests are exactly what is on the reviews sheets, so study it and you will be fine.
Awful! Can barely speak English, anyone without prior knowledge to Statistics will struggle!
Very hard to understand because his accent is actually super difficult to understand. Definitely need to put in a LOT of work on your own to pass this class. His tests are similar to some of the homework questions and he honestly gives a lot of partial credit. Dr. Jack Kang-Chan has a great heart and tries to help everyone get a decent grade
Terrible. I got a B but just from myself. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Do not take.
I had Chan for Bio Stat and believe me this is not an easy class. He gives a lot of homework but lets you hand it in on the day of the tests. He has an accent and is difficult to understand during class however he takes everything directly from the textbook so you can keep up by reading the book. Do the homework, study hard and you will do fine .
Worst professor ever. First of all he can barely speak englsih and speaks way to quickly, sounds like he's mumbling to himself. very confusing grader as well. I got a solid A in ALL three of his tests and only missed one class. found his class easy since his tests are identical to the reviews he gives you. somehow I ended up with a C-.
had to go to tutoring about 2x a week and study very hard from the textbook. he is very hard to understand and just mumbles at the board. Avoid at all costs the other teacher is sooo much easier
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Hands down the worst professor I have ever had!! I ignored the reviews on here and was ready to learn on my own but its not possible with his explanations. He goes through one chapter within 20 min, speaks to the board the whole time too. If the professor you wanted is filled wait till the next semester. Ruined my GPA!
Has a good heart. Talk to him after class and he is very helpful. Hard to understand, but study on your own and go to the university tutors for whatever you don't understand. Got a B+ on the first test, A- on the second, and thought I bombed the final but ended up with an A in the class. Do homework, they are free points!
He was the worst Professor I have ever taken. His accent makes it so hard to understand and you literally teach yourself on here. PLEASE AVOID THIS CLASS!!!
Very poor professor. Already came into the class with prior knowledge on calculus but at times he made me feel like I had no idea what I was doing. Hands out his own notes that just look like scribbles and are hard to follow. Very thick accent that is hard to understand. Only good thing about him is that his reviews ARE THE EXACT SAME as the tests.
Unless you have prior Calculus knowledge, you WILL do poorly. Just don't pick this guy, even if he is your only option. If you do, study, study, study. Do questions until you can answer them without having to refer to formula sheets. Do the homework, as that is your only chance for free points. Very hard to understand, especially.
He has a horrible rating on here and I was so scared to take him, but I'm so glad I did. His accent is strong, but you get used to it. You will do well if you do your homework and try to do well. He's a sweet guy. Two tests that are 50% of your grade, the better one he weighs 40% and lower 10%. Final is 50%, HW and Participation is extra credit
The rating for him is so bad and I was scared to take him, but I'm glad I did. You get used to his strong accent. If you come to class, do the homework, and ESPECIALLY the study guides (same as test) you will do great. I struggled with Calculus in high school and ended up getting an A. He gives extra credit too. He's the best and the sweetest!
Dr. Chan is a wonderful man who wants his students to succeed. The material is hard but if you work hard and go to his office hours you will have success in his class. His test reviews are identical to his tests. Would take him again in a heartbeat!
he is so funny and is really caring and gave out candy and snacks during the final
He is a good person but its really hard to understand what he's talking about. Do his homework because they count as part of your tests.
Dr. Chan has a golden heart. Come to him and ask him anything he will be very understanding and sympathetic. I was at first intimidated by the reviews to join his class, but it's not bad. Yes he's lecture heavy and his accent is so thick its hard to understand, but if you can study the review sheets they're identical to the test.
When I first read these reviews, I was extremely terrified of what was yet to come. However, I gave this class a chance. Dr. Chan is a sweet, caring (and hilarious) professor. As long as you do the homework (bonus points to your exams), show up to class (a major key) and do well on your exams (identical to the review sheet), you should be fine.
Just because he doesn't teach the best doesn't mean an A isn't attainable. His accent wears off, and he is more then fair when it comes to grading criteria. Each test question has 3 parts, you must get 2 right to get the question right. Everything he puts up on the board is given to you from paper to follow along. Homework questions are on the test
I really don't know why he has such bad rating but he was honestly such a good professor. His study guides are almost exactly like the tests and he does try to pass everyone.
He's a good professor even though you can't understand him at times. Go to his extra helps because he gives you points on exams if you do.
Test are same as the sample exam he gives you. Gives extra credit. I don't understand him in class, but easy class if you can read the textbook/notes he gives.
I honestly dont get how he has less than a five. His teaching is amazing and the review sheet that he gives out is literally the same as the test. He is more than willing to help and actually gets a joy from helping and teaching others
I really don't know why his rating are bad because he is such an amazing professor. It is hard to understand him with his accent but he really does try and go to his office hours he is more than willing to help. Don't let the negative reviews fool you he is actually amazing
He is such a sweetheart and really does want his students to succeed. He is always ready to help if you need it and his tests are pretty fair.
Dr. Chan is genuine and really put's forward his best to teach the class. He makes a lot of funny jokes and makes the class enjoyable. He isn't a tough grader, just do your homework and everything will work out. Also make sure you sit in the front because he is a little quiet and make sure to ask questions, he'd happily answer them.
You literally just have to study the review sheets and the exams are exactly like that. He gives a lot of extra credit and is very caring, trying to make everyone pass. Take him!
Very hard to understand him while he teaches, but if you go to his office hours he's actually very kind and helpful. He wants everyone to pass so he gives extra points for doing homework and he weighs tests so you'll pass. Tests are similar to the review guide so as long as you know how to do those, you'll pass. Use Slader.
He cant be understood whatsoever he doesn't speak English this has been the most stressful semester eve due to this class.
Do not take this class. Goes over problems way too fast and has the thickest accent. You will be lost the whole class, and when you ask him questions he completely ignores them. Avoid this class!!!
although he is very nice and tries his best to do all for his students, you cant understand him due to his strongest accent. i lost track from all of my courses because of his class.
DO NOT take this class. It causes an immeasureable amount of stress. He goes too fast, and even if he didn't you wouldn't be able to understand him. Also the test review sheet answers are often wrong or incomplete. My advice would be first to drop, but if that's not possible, then do all your homework, and spend a lot of time every night reviewing.
Although his accent may be difficult to understand but he is a professor that do care about students. He is not a tough grader and he is trying to give everyone a good grade. Tests are the same as review sheets. Homeworks are counted as extra credits. Just go to class and study all the notes and you will pass the test.
Just don't take him. I repeat, do not take him. I had to withdraw from his class. He is horrible and you can't understand a word he is saying. I went to his office hours and that still didn't help, he's horrible. Avoid him.
Cant understand him because he speaks low and has accent. Test are EXACTLY LIKE REVIEW SHEETS. Only thing gives a bunch of h.w but do it and they all count as extra credit.
He is a nice man with a good heart, but do not take his class! He has a very heavy accent, so he is really hard to understand! His tests are based on a review sheet, but if you don't understand the review sheet then you are not going to do well! He goes really fast and he is very unclear. I do not recommend taking his class!
Hard to understand at times, but not a bad prof. He's caring & funny. Gives EC on test for doing hw & asking for help aft class/office hrs. His tests r exactly like his review sheets, just switch of #s. If u can ans all qns on review sheet, u can def. ace the test. Gives formula sheets during tests. Easy A if u r good at mth or if u actually tried.
Glad I took him! Take class ONLINE! NOT in person! He is caring. A lot of HW(use chegg)- gives you plenty of time to do HW. Review sheets are exactly the test, but the #'s are changed. He posted review videos and they helped with tests. He graded our tests 20% HW, 20% review sheet, and 60% test. Do the HW and review sheet starting test /w/ 40pts.
Professor Chan is incredibly understanding and caring towards his students. I took this class asynchronously, but he was always available for office hours and gave feedback for every homework. There is a lot of homework, but he is very understanding about it and listens to his students.
Took this class asynchronously big mistake. He gives a lot of homework. If you do not understand his test review sheets you are screwed. It is very hard to understand the videos he posts. Stay away from this class
His homework was long but google helped a lot. If you told him it was too much he would limit the hw given. He gave us a home test, which was pretty easy bc he did all the work for us in his given videos, we just needed to calculate the math. Review videos helped with the midterm/final. Although, it did take 1.5-3 hrs to do all the math on exams.
