Awesome teacher, nice guy, approachable
Willing to help students; understands that his class is not our ONLY class!
Very knowledgeable.
Super cool guy and knows what he's talking about.
Wonderful teacher. Very knowledgable and excellent at relaying information. Wish I could take him again! FUNNY GUY!
I really liked him. He's funny & very helpful. If you don't understand he will make it so that you do. Very interactive class! Take him!
No real homework (just reading), fairly simple material, somewhat hard tests. This guy is really funny and will talk about anything in class. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Wonderful teacher. Funny and extremely intelligent. Can't wait to take him again. One of the best experiences I've had.
I took this class honors but he teaches and grades both honors and non honors classes the same. He's really a nice guy and very funny. Knows everyone's name and makes the stuff interesting. As long as you read and do the study guides, it's not hard.
Very difficult class for entry level. I would not recommend Knight for this class. Tests are all essay and when he finally grades them, he asks you to return them because he re-uses the questions for the next semester. Huh,sounds like "old school&quo
Really hard for a beginners class. I like him because he's funny, but other than that it's soooooo hard.
I had to drop this class after the first test, I studied so hard and the material just went over my head. There is a lot of reading and he doesn't really discuss much in class, there is a student panal everyday. He is a nice guy but the class is difficult for a 110 class.
He was a great professor...Hard to get use to at the beginning but it proved to be a very beneficial class. His lectures are great and he is a great person to talk to. Thinking about double majoring in philosophy because of this class...Take it!!!
This was a very interesting class and I learned a lot. However, it does require thinking and reading. More time than I thought but he tries to prepare you for it.
This class was challenging but certainly not impossible. I learned a lot from the class and from other conversations with Dr. Knight. He is a credit to SMSU and should be given a raise at the first available opportunity.
Dr. Knight is really helpful both inside and outside of class. Id recommend taking him, but tests are a bit more difficult than expected. Don't try to explain in your own words, just write down everything that he says or puts in the notes and you'll do fine. Has a good sense of humor!
Highly advise not taking Dr. Knight for entry level philosophy. He has the students teach for him and basically you are on your own!!!!!!!!
Jack is hilarious! He is an awesome teacher. The class material is boring but he makes it very interesting. His test are iffy. They can be pretty tough but if you pay attention and take notes you will be just fine. Take Jack Knight!
Jack is a very easy person to get along with. The test are a little hard, but if you go to class and actually pay a little attention you will do fine. He makes Phi very interesting.
This professor isn't easy. But, if you engage the material and try to wrap your head around it by asking him questions, you'll get a good grade and learn a lot of applicable material for future liberal arts classes.
Jack is a great teacher! He's funny & approachable... he obviously has a great grasp of the material from many years of teaching. The discussion is sometimes hard to follow, but worthwhile. Great class!
I wasn't as big of a fan of the class, but Jack made the class fun and understandable. I definately reccomend taking him for PHI to fill the general ed requirement!
I absolutely hate philosophy because I think it is usuless in life. Jack did make it fun though and if you have to take this class for a gen ed. requirement, this is the one to take with Dr. Knight. Great Teacher!
Jack is an awesome guy, I just wasn't crazy about Philosophy as a subject. A lot of reading and most of it is hard to understand. Tests are fill in the blank and 2 essay questions.
Unique character. Light course work, tests aren't too deep. Highly recommended.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Tests simply demonstrate your knowledge of the material, a great and helpful guy in and out of class, very funny, and really brings some hefty concepts down to where anyone can understand them.
Jack is a great teacher, he's very funny & does the best he can to make concepts understandable. 2 supplemental essay exams over book readings. They can be difficult if you didn't understand the reading. 2 tests, midterm & final aren't too bad. Short answer & essay. Attend study sessions, read (alot), and do study guide and you'll be fine.Great guy
If you are good at math, Logic should be a breeze for you; however, if you're not, then you might have a bit of trouble. I tend to like math, so I barely studied for this course and made an A. There are 4 exams, and each builds on each other and gets a little harder -- but if you stay with it, you shouldn't have a problem. Jack is also hilarious!
Jack is one of the most memorable teachers I will ever have. He does a great job at explaining philosophy in a way that the students can understand. The 2 main tests require a lot of studying, but aren't too bad. Going to class is highly recommended because you miss a lot if you skip. I highly recommend this class!
Jack cares about his students more than any other instructor I have ever had. His class is not terribly easy, but he is so genuine and respectful that it's hard not to learn. He has an amazing heart and knows what he is doing. I recommend him for ANY of his philosophy courses. The most legit person you could ask for!
He clearly loves his subject and urges you to like it, too. He makes philosophy so clear and you follow him easily. The class requires A LOT of reading, but no written homework. He schedules study sessions outside of class for test review. Tests are short answer & essay, but if you know the material for the most part, you'll do fine.
This guy loves to teach and it's obvious. There are reading assignments every day, but there are detailed notes online and everything that's on the test he went over in class so I'll admit, I didn't do that much reading...still. Even though my class was early, he made it fun to go to. Great guy.
Jack is a great guy, but philosophy is just not my thing. I did fine in the class but I had no clue what he was talking about...I just mirrored it on the tests.
Anyone who gives Jack a bad rating is just lazy. There are readings every day, but Jack goes over them extensively every class period. He is more than willing to help in any way he can, holds study sessions, and offers a few EC chances in case you need it. He loves teaching and is definitely the best professor I have ever had. Take Jack's classes!
you can tell he loves the class but he only chooses 5 speakers a day that he talks directly to. this makes it hard to stay awake in the early classes that you arent a "participant" in. hes a great teacher, i just got sleepy a lot.
Very funny guy, but the class is pretty hard. There are two tests, and they cover a lot of information, and supplemental essays over small books that you have to read, but he is a pretty easy grader on those. Overall, nice teacher, but really hard class!
by far the best teacher i've ever had. tests are not super difficult. if you go to study sessions and study the review you will do fine. don't really need to read the book unless you are up that day. i will take any class by jack that i can. he's really helpful and you can tell he cares about his job. he even has a facebook group dedicated to him.
He is super nice and he really takes the time to get to know you. He genuinely cares about his job and his students. He definatly knows his material and he is very animated in his teaching. He grades kind of hard but he gives extra credit and if u come to class and the study sessions you will do fine. He also has all his notes on balckboard. it is
HE'S AWESOME! He will let you go to his office, and ask millions of questions about his study guide b4 the tests, and he helps SO much! Take him if you need this class!!
Loved it but he can be difficult--You really do need to be quite intelligent to understand the point he's trying to explain. Take advantage of the study sessions!
Awesome professor!!! Would take his class again if I could. He's an amusing guy, quite a character. He'll always be willing to help. His tests could be challenging for some if you aren't good with short answer/essay. However his questions are very clear and general and he'll go over the study guide with you until you understand. Loved this class!
He is an awesome teacher! I didnt think phi would be interesting but he is so enthuized that you just sit and listen to him talk. The time flys by quick. As long as you attend class and pay a little bit of attention you will get an A.
Jack is a really easygoing, awesome dude. His lectures are more like class discussions, and he always has a humorous way of approaching the subject at hand. If you wanted to get a good grade in his class, all you really have to do is show up most of the time. It's a little more work if you want to get an A, but Jack will be glad to help you do so.
He's HILARIOUS. If you don't miss over twice, he gives extra credit. The class is verrrrry easy if you don't miss and study for like an hour for both tests. Virtually no homework and no final. He's super funny, easy, and nice. Take him!
JACK IS SO FUNNY!! He is very helpful and class is very entertaining. I worked hard and got an A, but it should be an easy B. 2 essay tests on 2 books. I didn't read one of them and got a 100%. Awesome teacher. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!
Going into his class I was terrified. I was so wrong. He is extremely laid back, funny, and witty. This was one class I hated to miss. As long as you understand the 2 books and the study guide for the tests you will do fine. And if you don't understand it, just ask. He tries not to fail people if he knows they are trying.
He is a great teacher. Always wants to help you in any way he can. Go to the study sessions before the tests though because they are not easy but I wish I could take more classes with him
jack is quaint and great. take him.
Jack is awesome, Best teacher I have had at MSU.
One of the best Prof, I've met. I would to take this class again
Dr. Knight is an incredible professor - he teaches through discussion, but it is effective (which is rare)...There are 4 volunteers each class period who he'll ask a few questions and mostly talk to. His teaching style is really unique and I don't think many teachers can do what he does...the material is super interesting too. do the reading.
Jack Knight has a sense of humor and is never boring. He teaches through discussion based on readings you have for that day (about half textbook, half on blackboard), and it is effective. I took the honors course, and I found it very easy. The concepts were foreign to me before the class, but have an open mind and you'll be able to follow along.
Jack is very nice and has a great sense of humor. The class is a little difficult if you are not a critical thinker, but not impossible. Reading isn't necessary unless you are up for discussion that day. Otherwise take notes and definitely attend the study sessions!
Jack Knight is a wonderful professor. I always enjoyed class and listening to him talk. It's like a grandpa telling stories. If you love discussion, take his class. 2 Tests, STUDY!!! if you care, you'll be fine
Jack is just a great person in general. Symbolic logic is a different kind of language, so it takes some getting use to, but he is generous with helping students understanding the material. He also gives extra credit, which is great to keep your grade up.
Jack is a great person, he's got an awesome sense of humor and treats his students like people instead of mindless droids llike other teachers do. There's only 2 tests, a midterm and final, and they are short answer so STUDY! But, he holds study sessions outside of class and will give up any time possible to help you. He really cares about students
Jack is one of the best professors at MSU. If you've never had him you are truly missing out. He is very helpful and funny. Basically, he is just a great person in general. I feel honored to of had to the opportunity to take one of his classes before he retires.
Had him for 306 and 110. Probably the best professor I have ever had, and I have had some great ones. He is very kind and will get you interested in the subject. Make sure you do your readings and participate in classes. He will give you points just for trying... he doesn't judge. I am so blessed to have met this man. Take him if you can
This teacher is the cherry on top of any sundae! He seriously knows his stuff, and he is hilarious in class. If you show up, do the readings, and look somewhat alive you WILL get an A in this class. I got a B because I didn't do the readings. So just read his handouts, and you'll have a blast with this professor. Plus a sweet grade!
Jack is a great teacher. You only really have to read there of the chapters which you pick the rest of the time just listen to class discussion. Only get grades for Mid-term, final, and two in class papers. Before the mid term and the final, Jack held study sessions when it was convenient for the students to clarify any questions. GREAT TEACHER!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Jack's entertaining, approachable, and definitely cares about his students. The lectures are somewhat important to attend but the class isn't too hard; he gives out study guides and holds review sessions.
I am currently finishing up with this class. If you do the readings and fill out the study guide on blackboard as you go, you will have NO problem. Everyone in my class has an A i believe (although it is an honors class) Jack is an incredible person, and if you give it some effort there is much you can learn from him.
Jack is an awesome teacher. He is personal and actually cares about his students. He will learn every student's name in the class within the first month. He is funny and makes things interesting. He holds review sessions for each test, and there are only two. Easy A! And he gives points for attendance and extra credit.
I really enjoyed his class because of his sense of humor and how easy going he is. You only have 2 main tests and both are like mini essays. You do discussions in class but only have to sign up for three. Do the readings just so you have a little understanding of the topics. Definitely take him!
Jack is an awesome teacher who really does want his students to succeed in life! He loves to joke around with students. You can only miss 3 days, or else you lose participation points. You also have to sign up for 3 panel days, but he tries to give everybody extra credit! Tests are fairly simple too!
Symbolic can be a difficult class, but Jack makes it fun. He's super helpful and is always willing to go the extra mile for his students.
Jack is incredible. highly respected by MSU faculty. Genuine interest for each student. One of the nicest people -- don't take jokes or side comments seriously :) 4 tests100 pts, 80 pts particpation, 40 pt vocab quiz (matching), 80 pt paper. Extra credit for one additional participation day. generous grader, if honest, intelligent attempt.
In the honors section, participation is required, but you pick the readings and days you want to participate. Dr. Knight is an amazing teacher, but you do need to to work hard to get a good grade in the class. reading the assigned material is a must. He explains things in a straightforward manner and tries to answer all questions as good as he can.
I wasn't necessarily excited for Logic, but he makes it fun(?!) to come to class! All work is IN CLASS. Do yourself a favor and get to know him personally--he is a great resource and an even better friend. It's Jack Knight--if you haven't taken him yet, do so as soon as possible before he retires!
One of the best professors I've had at MSU. This is my second class with Dr. Knight, and I really enjoyed it! The class is somewhat hard, but he is there for you all the way. Very helpful, and goes out of this way to make sure you get the material. He is very respected by students, and I would definitely take him again, if possible!
Good class. He's honestly a great professor and helps in any way he can. The class is tough though so be ready to study.
Great instructor. Easy class for sure. Got by without doing the readings. There are two in class essays that you'll want to read for. Very clear as to what he wants in those though. Awesome guy!
I honestly wish he was my Grandpa. I went through a tough year with lots of personal issues and he was totally compassionate and understanding. He actually cares about all of his students. Clearly shows everyday how his only wish is that all of his students succeed in life after the class. Definitely worth going to chat for fun during office hours
Dr. Knight is amazing! He made philosophy easy to understand. You do have to participate in class discussions, but you sign up the class period before. I did not find the class difficult at all. He holds study sessions before each test which are very helpful. I find philosophy boring but Jack will make you laugh and the class time will fly by.
Jack is so funny, genuine, and caring. I actually thought philosophy was kinda difficult but he made it enjoyable. I love the way he runs class by choosing specific students to participate in lectures each day. You sign up ahead of time so you always know when you'll have to talk. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Professor Knight is the highest quality professor I have had at this school so far. He will grade you based on how well you demonstrate an UNDERSTANDING of the subject. It is philosophy after all. Tests are not as simple as yes or no answers or multiple choice. You will be challenged, but you will get an enormous return for your effort.
Jack Knight? More like Jackus Christ because I'm terrible at philosophy and he's a miracle worker who made me understand it enough to get an A. Bless this man. Adopt me as your granddaughter
Holy moly, want an incredible professor? Look no further, this man made a subject I had no interest in very interesting, and his sense of humor made the class. Overall wonderful experiance. 10/10 would recomend. Bless this sweet man.
The content of this class was so confusing to me, but the professor's lectures really helped me understand it the best that I could. He is funny, caring, and helpful. He holds study sessions for tests. The majority of the course is graded by exams. Overall, I would definitely recommend him.
There was a lot of outside reading, but Prof. Knight explains them pretty well in his lectures. In the honors course, a few students were chosen to be part of the main discussion, but you volunteer for what day you want to speak. 2 in-class essay tests over long readings, midterm (short answer & essay), and a final (short answer & essay).
Loved this class. Super funny and conversational based. Take philosophy with him, you wont regret it!
he is great!!!
I LOVED him! Even though the class can leave you a little confused from a philosopher, he goes out of his way to help his students. He cares about all of his students and if you are struggling he does his best to help
Jack is an awesome professor! He makes lectures fun and interesting! There are only about 4 tests and you get points for a few other things like attendance and discussion. If you have three or less absences he even gives you an extra credit opportunity. Really cares about his students and overall a good person. I'll definitely miss him!
the besstttttt human being
very interesting setup to the class. you pick a few days to talk, then come to class and interact with him throughout the lecture. only two tests and two short in class essays, so you need to do well. he's such a sweet guy and is very smart. the information seems overwhelming, but he tires to help where he can.
Class was easy, show up, sign in, and pay attention. Graded by two exams (100pts each) and two essays (30pts each). Bonus is offered. 5pts for attendance and 10pts for an extra day on a discussion panel. You have to volunteer for the panel at least 3 times in the semester. Its easy! Read the assigned reading, show up, and let Jack do the rest.
Great person and makes class interesting to come to!
Funny guy, always makes the lectures interesting. Always willing to help you out if you need help with something.
Jack is decent at best and that's on a good day. His class is lectures that are loosely based off the reading material but he goes off on tangents and tells stories that he thinks helps but don't. Honestly, Jack's been teaching too long to a fault, he doesn't use technology, rarely sends emails and never posts grades, someone else does at that.
unless you learn best by lectures and reading Jack's not the prof for you. He does a panel of 4 people every class and basically disregards the rest of the class. If he wanted his students to get the best out of the way he runs his class, a socratic seminar would be best. the class is graded by 5 things and he doesn't cover the study guides well
Jack is a great person and cares about his students, however if you don't learn best from lectures I wouldn't recommend this class. You don't get any homework so your grade is based off of 3 tests you take. He also does not post grades at all until the course is over. I liked this class because it was a relaxing atmosphere.
Jack is a great guy and tries his best to get you to understand the readings. Every class there is readings due, 4-5 ppl sign up to be in the discussion, he talks to & asks those students questions while everyone listens & that's how you learn the content. You have 2 essay exams, a midterm, a final, 10 attendance points, 30 points for discussion.
Jack Knight was an amazing professor who helped to teach the material in a way that made it both fun and easy to understand. I would 100% recommend this professor to anyone wanting to take philosophy!
Jack was an outstanding professor. You could tell he cared a lot about the things he was teaching and about what each student's grade in the class was.
Dr. Knight's teaching style is very student-focused. In a course that could so easily be bogged down with boringly-presented material and lectures, Dr. Knight maintained a discussion-based format, in which every student was tasked with participating a few times throughout the semester. This manner of teaching is incredibly effective and engaging.
jack was an extremely kind and funny professor who clearly cares a lot about philosophy. i did not favor the teaching style used to review our readings, as it wasn't engaging for those who were not on the 5 person "panel," but it works for some people. if you participate when necessary and attend the review sessions, you will succeed.
I didn't like Philosophy that much, but Dr. Knight changed my mind completely. He's passionate about what he's doing, and his energy can even inspire you to be in the same way. The exams can be a bit tricky, so make sure to study and participate in the discussions regularly and you can pass. If you need help, he always welcomes students
racist xenophobe
Dropped the first day of class. He spent the whole time making weird jokes and would call you out if you weren't laughing. Also made several inappropriate comments to young girls in the class. He should be retired.
This guy is amazing at teaching. He is an old guy who has the sense of humor of his age. I thought this class was boring until he made it funny. 10/10. 5 stars on Yelp.
Jack is probably the funniest teacher you will ever meet and he is very caring too. He is pretty easy to communicate with and grades pretty fairly for the most part. Lectures aren't too heavy and there's no homework but have to participate to get a good grade. Not hard to get a good grade on tests but kind of hard to get for the midterm and final.
How this man has so many 5 ratings, I have no idea. This is one of the worst professors I've had. His lecture style requires mandatory attendance, his exams are 20 SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS, and he can not work a computer. There is NO homework, so basically only exam points. It's also the end of the semester and he has yet to put a single grade in.
Jack is a good professor- caring and understanding. He is VERY lecture heavy so don't skip. Be involved in ALL discussions and take notes (even if your not speaking) or else you will have to re-read all the material before exams. You have hardly any grades in the gradebook (annoying) and grades are not put in till end of term. Would take again tho.
He is one of those professors who really cares about his students. He was very helpful and funny. He was my favorite teacher I had all semester.
During this course I struggled an extensive amount to grasp the concepts Jack lectured about. This class is ONLY lecture and only a couple test. He grades very hard even after studying. He is a nice guy, just a difficult class even when paying attention.
