Knows his stuff, but is a very difficult prof.
He's a good guy, but arrogant. He is one of the most difficult CHEM 210/211 teachers at SCSU. One of the only classes I've ever gotten a 'B' in...he rarely gives A's ...he is not a very effective teacher (I didn't learn much)
He has practice problems that are similar to the tests. Not one person in our class got an A. I was the top student with an A-. No mercy or curve at the end of the class period. However, the tests are curved. HAs a good side and an evil side.
He's tough, but if you go to class, take good notes and do the assigned homework problems, the course is not too bad. I got a B, which I thought was fair. Big plus: he doesn't have an accent, so it's easy to listen to him lecture.

Decent teacher, knows his stuff. Willing to help. If you go to class, it's not too bad.

very understandable, funny guy too
He only uses power point to teach, somewhat effective, yet his tests are very difficult. I also agree that he is very arrogant and hard to talk to.
The powerpoints are helpful, but he doesn't go over the equations and SHOW you how to do the problems. He just gives the numerical answer.
He is so rude. He doesn't care about the students. He is to smart to teach this class.
Least favorite teacher I have ever had.
Very difficult class. He knows his stuff and likes to show demonstrations but those tests were very difficult.
This is the worst professor ever. He does not help students. If you ask him a question, he belittles you first and then doesn't even answer it. In class, he is a machine with no time for questions. Do not ever take a class from him.
His lectures were fairly interesting because he had some experiments to show off every so often. But he really wasnt a teacher that you'd like to ask for help. He usually was sarcastic and made the student feel dumb for asking the question. Way-2-Go Jack.
Good, interesting teacher, hard to get a good grade from him though
Dr. McKenna is a tough, but excellent professor. You'll learn a lot by taking his courses, and he's funny.
Excellent prof! His class is tough, but it is supposed to be, its chemistry. Students who dont work hard fail, students who put in the effort get the grade they want. If you want to learn, take him! Not easy, but not impossible!
McKenna enjoys failing students and making it almost impossible to get a decent grade in his classes. In addition, he is extremely cocky and makes you feel stupid for asking questions.
Very helpful and clear in his lectures. You WILL learn a lot in this class if you're willing to put forth the effort. Tries to pick on students in funny way, but sometimes makes them feel unintelligent for asking a question. I really think, though, that he means no harm.
Chem 211 with McKenna is very, very challenging. He isn't that bad of a prof. You really have to work hard. His lecture is clear, but in lab he isn't very helpful and tells you to find out things on your own.
I enjoyed this class. It was one of the most difficult classes i have taken. The other people who say McKenna enjoys failing students doesn't know what their talking about. Students fail in his class because the class is difficult and those students look for someone to blame other than themselves
He is very helpful the tests are difficult but they make you learn the subject if you have any hope of doing well in Organic i would take mckenna he gives plenty of handouts on the web as long as you study them you can get a A
He seems to enjoy people not doing well in his class
actually he is very clear, clear that he could care less how you do in this class
Yeah the class is difficult, but at least I have to put in some effort to learn. He comes off egotistical and he may be, but if I was that intelligent I would be too. His jokes are funny and stories are interesting. Deal with the work.
He is a good professor. He thinkings that he has to race through his information just because. I thought that you do not need to run though all of the material. But he gives you all the resources you need if you are willing to take time and learn the information.
Excellent teacher! One of the best I've ever had at SCSU! Trys to make chem as interesting and fun as it can be and is very nice. Yea it's hard, but chem's not supposed to be easy. If you study there's no reason you shouldn't do well in his class! I enjoyed it (for a chem class) I'd take him again!
This professor is an ****.He does not care if you pass or fail. He has no student/teacher relations skills. You know more than the class professor? Well you should you are teaching it , or are you not? His teaching style is average at best, and he never asks for questions in class. He knows his material, but does not care if others learn it.
Hint: He likes it when you come to class the first day and sit in the front row.
I dreaded going to his class. He teaches very fast and he doesn't seem to care if it's too fast for his students. He is very arrogant and he enjoys seeing how many of his students drop his class after the first exam.
Like everyone else is saying he goes through the material very fast, but I think he does care about the student. He is used to teaching higher chemistry courses, so it does make this class a little bit more difficult. But chemistry isn't supposed to be a piece of cake ya' know.
McKenna is a self righteous prick. He prides himself on knowing that he is better than you. Arrogance is his middle name and I no longer have any interest in chemistry since taking his course and watching his antics.
Let me just say that having Dr. Jack McKenna as a professor is quite possibly the worst thing that has ever happened to me. This man could not care less about being a teacher.
i thought he was actually one of the better chem professors and i got along well with him, but he does expect a lot...gen chem is a hard class to teach and i'd say he does a darn good job...i never got bored in his class. get on his good side by going in for extra help..it pays off. make sure you're prepared for lab too
overall nice guy. 4 exams & a final. helps students who wants and asks for help. don't slack off and expect a decent grade, it won't happen in this class. does care for students, but only students who care enough to show up to his class. if you don't show up, and did bad. don't **** about it.
he is only interested in letting you know how much smarter he is than you, and how stupid you are. don't ever ask him a question unless you want him to belittle you in front of the entire class. i now hate chemistry.
brilliant professor--I hate chemistry and always will, but he is tough and really cares about the subject. his grading methods are strange, though; the labs count for about a third of the letter grade even though they take so much effort. as long as you study hard, you should be fine. B+
Good professor
Awesome professor! Very helpful, but he rushes through the material at times. Be on time; he likes that. Not a slack-off class, unless you want to do bad. I liked his study sessions; it shows that he cares how we do in his class and there is extra credit at times.
Hard, hard, hard! You learn a lot though and he cares about his students.
Very good professor. I can see how some people may be offended by his jokes or comments that are trying to make things sound easy. I often stopped by his office during non-posted office hours, he never failed to help me. He tries hard to make sure you learn the info. Big class is tough for personal attention. He sets a healthy pace and keeps it!
good teacher, however he cruizes through the lecture, so its very hard to follow along. If you go to lectures and listen, then read the chapters, you'll walk out of the class with good grade.
Hard to understand, moves really fast. Thinks that all students should already know the material at times.
Jack Mckenna is so rude. I am currently in his class and have been emailing him on general questions. I have sent a total of 7 emails and have had NO response.. what kind of "professor" is that???? Dont take this class with him!
I took his online course and it was pretty difficult. He gives you little study guides that he says will help you but when you take his exams there are a whole plethra of random questions you have no idea where they came from. One good thing is that he knows his tests are hard and is pretty nice on the grading curve.
I had him for an online class. I stopped by his office several times during his office hours, but he always failed to be there. Would never recommend this proffesor. Unless you want to have no help at all.
Jack McKenna is a very nice guy if you get to know him. He has a different way of teaching, but if you make an effort to learn he will help you. Keep a good attitude!
Teacher did not answer ANY of my questions-was too busy looking at cars on the internet
rude and will not help students
I honestly liked having this class with Dr. McKenna. He chose a textbook that was easy to read and comprehend. The OWL lessons were a bit challenging, but a great way to learn. He made time for me during his office hours and was more than willing to help me. Yes, he laughed at me a bit, but all out of good humor! Attend class regularly though!
I honestly think that anyone who says that he was rude to them didn't try in this class. If you show an effort, he is quite helpful. His tests are hard and he moves fast, but alot of the notes are online. As for him being arrogant, I loved his fun little extra tidbits of information, it asctually makes chem interesting.
McKenna is an amazing teacher. Always willing to help and keeps class fun. Tells funny analogies but you can still learn a lot. I would definitely reccommend him to anyone, even if you know nothing about chemistry.
McKenna plays favorites, plain and simple. Decides right off the bat who he likes and who he doesn't. Rather rude towards his non-favorite students. Great teacher if you're into sucking up to your superiors.
take him!! he REALLY knows what hes talking about and will try to help you understand but does it in a really odd way. he kinda goes off on random topics pretty often but i strongly suggest you take him. look forward to him making chemicals and molecules appear like people or double cheeseburgers. not even kidding anyone would agree with me on that
I have him for an into to chem class and he expects students to already know the material. He is constantly saying how easy the material is, without taking into condsideration we are in an intro class for a reason. Does not answer in class questions, does not respond to emails, and go through lectures way too quickly. Too much homework.
he talks really fast, and is hard to keep up with. feels as though he talks down to you. its death by powerpoint for the whole class period and after tests he lectures more even if it is five-ten minutes. he does grade a little on a curve for his tests. but he cruzes through material the other 160 class was on 10 when we almost finished 13
He does go through content fast, and his corny jokes are funny from time to time. but all in all he is a great prof and always willing to help.
Goes through material VERY fast. This is in intro course, but I would not recommend it if you have not had chem before. He expects you to know everything. He assigns A TON of busy work that takes a lot of time. He tells jokes that are NOT funny. And asks stupid questions
Over-all Dr. McKenna was a good teacher (will have to agree that he goes through the slides very quickly). He dislikes having students on cellphones & using laptops during lecutres. If you work hard, attend class, & go to him with questions you will do really well in the class. Would highly recommend taking him.
I am a straight A student, but CHEM 101 with McKenna completely threw me off guard. I took the online course. He never once responded to my 6 emails. He was never at his office during "office hours." He was no help at all. Plus, the material on the tests was not from the book or the OWL online assignments. Do not take this with him.
Jack McKenna does not teach Chem. 101 basically just gives you the material and you are on your own. Doesn't return calls or emails. I recommend taking this class elsewhere.
Gen Chem 2. Not a good teacher, can be funny at times but other than that it's death by powerpoint. Only graded on Lab work and exams. Lab work is as usual and fairly self explanatory but his exams are impossible. Class avg. was 62% after curving it up 20%!!! Exams do not come from lectures, or the book. Seems to just pull them out of his wazoo.
Goes very fast in lecture. Doesn't use power point really, won't give you slides, but does give you lots of pdf files and docs to look over. Labs are fine, and you can make up points in Mastering Chemistry. They are changing class format to all video soon. Non-responsive to emails. Must use office hours. IMPORTANT:Tests are concept, not math heavy!
I took this class online- He grades on a MAJOR curve!! There are only 4 tests and I got to fail TWO of them and still ended this class with a 95%. Don't freak out when you get 19/40 on your tests :) Use Google on the OWL assignments. Not too bad.
I took this class online. It really wasn't bad. OWL assignments are annoying, but not too hard, and everything is graded on a huge curve. I got C's on all 4 exams, and got over 100% in the class. 4 units/tests, 5th is optional (he'll drop your lowest). Easy course!
Currently on the edge of reporting this teacher to his supervisor. His current homework system he is using is so we don't waste HIS time(which he said himself). currently 75% is doing poorly on our clicker quizzes/D2L. Understand he is helpful, but only to those he likes. Laziest and most self-centered teacher I have ever met.
Great Professor, easy to approach. Very fast passed in his classroom, just keep up and you will do well on his tests. One of my favorite Professors and I would take him again.
He makes you learn everything on your own. The only way you will get his help is if you go to his office where he can be very helpful. The only think we did in class was clicker quizzes and exams.
I took this class online and never recieved an email back. He never once could meet up with me. He didn't post grades until the semester was done. He is a terrible teacher. I am normally an A student and I failed two tests and got a D on the third one. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Take this class online and save time. He uploads confusing lectures online that don't help you learn the material. Gives a quiz on the content of recorded lecture. Classtime is spent doing problems from content in recorded lecture. Then homework assignment based on that lecture. I see it as a 3x points based on how well one taught themself.
Very organized, and good professor. Lectures are mandatory. There are a lot of grades and homework so be prepared for that. Has a generous curve too!
Class is basically an online class with mandatory lectures. Class time(lecture) is clickers and problems to solve. You are graded on how well you do. Learning the section ahead of time is a must. All lectures prof. explains the subject are pre-recorded online. Mastering Chemistry Assignment are harder than class problems. Chem book is a must have.
All learning was done on your own lecture is mandatory but kinda pointless you just answer questions with a clicker. If you did not watch his lecture online ahead of time you will be lost.Very angry teacher he one day stormed out of the room because a couple girls were giggling in the back. If you have the choice DO NOT take this class with McKenna
Extremely condescending and lazy. All learning is done on your own outside of class. He consistently makes the mistake of not opening quizzes or homework assignments until the day before they are due, yet if you forget to return something in lab, he takes a big chunk out of that lab grade. If you make him have to do something, he gets docks big.
Didn’t like teaching style wasn’t effective. Pre-recorded lectures watch on your own time. Class time spent only on clicker questions never goes over material and expected to know it before class. Teach yourself in his class. Is willing to help, didn’t find his explanations clear. Does have grading curve and re-takes for every exam.
He basically makes us teach ourselves. He just tries different experiments on the class, like "flipping the class", having prizes for the top test scorer, clicker quizzes, etc. He's also very condescending. He spent 10 minutes of lab explaining how to use a ruler. And he loves calling everything "really kinda cool."
His teaching method is horrible. You have to be prepared to teach yourself and take clicker quizzes almost everyday in class. If at all possible AVOID his class.
He is a horrible professor. His teaching method is terrible. Classes are kind of mandatory due to clicker quizzes. However, lectures are online and you have to watch them before class. He is not helpful and he thinks everyone else is stupid and he is so smart.
Expect to teach yourself. Try not to take online, he wont respond to ANY emails and will disappear off the face of the earth. Very time consuming/useless prerecorded lectures. Uses 5 different websites holding different info on each. Don't expect grades to be posted!
I know I am the minority in this but I really enjoyed having class with mckenna. I think he is a funny guy who loves the subject. Every class is a a clicker quiz that is class interactive, lectures are online; WATCH THEM. Great for help in office hours, all tests curved, drops two worst scores on quizzes and homework, labs are tough.
I highly recommend taking general chemistry with Dr. McKenna. His lecture style is unique in the sense you watch the lecture online before class and have clicker questions during class. He is very intelligent about the subject matter and brings a sense of humor into class. Exams are curved and he offers the chance for make-up exams.
From all the chemistry professors at St Cloud State I would definitely recommend Dr. McKenna. His exams are challenging and his lecture style is "flipped", but he he is incredibly helpful if you need a difficult concept explained. Oh, and get ready for some corny jokes.
Dr. McKenna was a great teacher who loves chemistry and is actually excited to teach it. Some people may not like him because you have to go over the material before class to get ready for the quizzes however I think I learned way more this way. He is extremely fair drops homeworks, a lab and quizzes. In my opinion one of the best teachers at SCSU.
Highly recommend. McKenna has online lectures that you need to watch before class due to clicker quizzes which I found very effective. I actually retained the info instead of memorizing and forgetting. Makes this challenging course easier. Exams are curved, retest for every exam, drops hwlabs. He genuinely wants the best for his students. TAKE HIM
Great professor! Holds review sessions for EVERY chapter. Drops hw and labs. Tough exams, but are extremely curved and also has make up exams for each exam. Would take him again.
Assigns too much work over multiple websites and doesn't actually teach you anything in person. He makes you watch videos on the chapters which I found to be ineffective for learning. He made no time for his students in my class and when asked for help his response was always "If you don't know this by now, you should drop out of this course."
Get Ready to teach yourself! This class you must watch lecture videos by yourself. During class time he doesn't give you time to ask questions, you must go to his office hours for that. Attendance is required because quizzes are give out every day. Labs and exams are hard! You must complete pre-labs and do online connect assignments. Not very fun!
hardest class i have never had. it was online. he has power point lectures but get the book it will help, also use the tutorial center. be ready to study hard. exams are difficult . but i am grateful for the final grade i got. thank you
Teaches a "Flipped Class," so if you don't understand how things work right away, don't take him. He doesn't care about your success. Only cares about the people who get 90% or above on everything. Worst professor I've ever had. I would not recommend at all. Take ANY other professor if possible.
Dr. McKenna is not a fun instructor to have. He is a good person in his own way but I didn't like his personality and teaching style. "Flipped" class meaning you watch lectures before class which are at least 40-140 mins and get a quiz that you can answer with a small group. Only answers questions that people get low scores on for the quiz.
Expect long recorded lectures where he sounds like he is reading out of a book. Quizzes every day for the whole lecture with clicker that you can work in a group but is graded individually. Homework through Connect. If you want your grade to be bumped even 0.01% you need go see all your tests within a week they are taken.
Not a fun class. Expect to teach yourself and visit his office often. Lecture times are quizzes for each recorded lecture. Doesn't bump up/round your grade at all unless you go and look at all your tests afterwards then maybe. 5 exams, 23 Quizzes, 13 PreLabs, 15 Labs, 21 Connect assignment. and ACS final. You will struggle if you take this course.
I only had him for our lab professor but I can tell he's a hard man. He's pre-lab lectures take 30 minutes to 1 hour but, it was mostly funny so... Ended up with a decent lab grade so I hold no grudge
Very good teacher, little annoying that you have to watch lectures outside of class but other than that a pretty solid prof with very funny moments in class that make you want to be there. Recommend not taking an 8 am lab though.
Great teacher if u actually go to meet him when u don't understand some topics. ... Comes across as a know it all to most students .. This course is not particularly easy but as long as u r ready to spend a lot of time on it, u all be fine.. Do not ever miss class because a lot of points are gained from the clicker quizzes.
Be ready for political rants. He told my class that people who don't go to college or people who voted for a certain president shouldn't be able to vote. Also when he's grumpy be ready.. I wrote .2 instead of 0.2 and got docked 20 points. My lab partner did the same thing and didn't get docked. He wouldn't give me the points back either.
Although the tests are hard and there's a lot of homework, by the end of the semester he curves the grade. If you want to pass the class with a C or higher, you have to do all of your homework, show up to class for quizzes, and study for the exams. But even if you failed most of your exams, you can still pass if you do your hw and quizzes.
