Dr. Miller rocks. She's super interested in the subject that she teaches and she really likes to teach. Her PhD is in stats education, and she knows how to teach the material. Also very funny. Exams are fair, as well as the homework.
Dr. Miller is great! By far the best math teacher I've had here and she is super excited about teaching. She really makes sure you learn the material. Lectures are great because she makes fill-in-the-blank notes for each lecture. Also, the book is only used for homework, nothing else.
Dr. Miller is awesome! She's really passionate about teaching and making sure students learn the material. She's really funny and makes the lectures interesting. The homework is straight forward and the exams are similar to homework problems, just more parts.
You HAVE to take Stats 250 with Dr. Miller! I've never had a teacher more invested in my learning and developing a passion for the course material more than Doc! What a Professor, exams aren't too bad (just do all those Practice exams really early!)
First stats class I took. Miller is nice and approachable. Drops two lowest HWs. No surprises on the exams. Her resources on CTools are very well organized and the entire semester's HWs are available immediately if you want to work ahead. I would recommend her.
Great professor. Very clear in lectures. I took this class with Adobe Connect, so I never had to even go to lecture. Easy QR1 credit.
Jackie Miller is a great stats prof. She has a good sense of humor too, lectures aren't boring. You don't have to actually attend lecture since she streams them live via AdobeConnect and posts them too. GSI was useless but I heard others were helpful. If you fail the first 2 exams and ace the final, she'll only count the final towards your grade.
Great Prof. Doesnt turn you away form the subject like a lot of profs do
I really don't like stats itself, but Miller was a very good professor. She explains things pretty well. Don't freak out if you don't do too well on the first two exams; the final was quite a bit easier and can count for 80% of your grade. Miller is funny too (math teacher funny, but funny nonetheless).
Professor Miller was an excellent professor. The class was not difficult. You get fill in the blank notes. You will do really well on exams if you do the homework andor go over the notes. Not a lot of work.
I came in with a little stats background and never went to lecture after the first few weeks. If you know the basic concepts, this class is a breeze. I just did the practice exams in the back of the workbook and did my homework in the GSI SLC office hours. Exams are exactly like the practice tests.
Jackie is AMAZING!!! So encouraging and really wants you to do well. She makes you feel prepared and relaxed going into exams! I would highly recommend taking this class with her or watching her lectures online!
Dr. Miller was just okay. Although she conveyed ideas well, she always sounded really dry and lifeless. I didn't do that well in the class (all of it being my fault) but she just didn't feel like an outstanding prof. Attending lecture via Blue Review made life very easy.
Good lecturer
I don't plan on taking another stats class because I took this for a premed requirement, but I because of Dr. Miller I really enjoyed the content. I never once attended lecture because you can watch her lectures online. Love her dry humor and honestly she is super helpful when you go to office hours. She makes all the content relatable.
A lot of people will say you have to take Gunderson but Dr. Miller was really great. Her lectures were very clear and she did a good job of answering questions. Plus all of her lectures are online with the coursepack notes so it really doesn't matter if you go to lecture or not.
Best math professor I have ever met. The course and all the materials are WELL organized. The exams are quite similar to the homework. Professor Miller is so nice and interesting. Strongly recommend.
Dr. Miller was really good at explaining the concepts and made them as relatable as possible. She does have a more dry sense of humor but it never gets in the way of her teaching. In class participation doesn't matter. She posted all lecture recordings so you could make this class fit your schedule. She wants her students to succeed.
Dr. Miller is an excellent teacher. She is extremely personable and really cares about her students. Her lectures are clear and easy to follow. This class isn't a blowoff, but if you come to every lecture, you should expect an A or B. Great class and even better lecturer, would highly recommend.
For Stats250 it does not matter who your professor is. Watch Miller or Gunderson's lectures are recorded and both explain the information well. If you want to do well, fill out your whole workbook, go to lab, and ask questions about tiny details. Details make the difference on exams. 80% of your grade is your exams. There are 2 tests and 1 final.
Dr. Miller was an excellent Stats teacher. Every lecture was incredibly thorough, and I rarely left class confused or with my questions unanswered. Dr. Miller also has a great dry sense of humor that made class a little less monotonous. Though most people say taking Stats with Gunderson is a must, I preferred Miller's lectures. :)
Very good professor and she uses the online streaming software, so you do not even need to attend your lectures. You can stay home and watch online, or you can skip them and watch at another time convenient for you! Tests aren't that hard and don't require too much studying. Funny lectures sometimes
Dr. Miller is certainly the best option of the stats lecturers. Dr. Gunderson is great, but she isn't very entertaining (she is just easier to understand), but Dr. Miller is a great option. Dr. Miller is a funny soul with great energy. Totally recommend taking this stats class.
Miller was a great lecturer, but it doesn't matter who you really take because attendance is optional. Either watch Miller or Gunderson both are good. I suck at math in general so I'm not doing that well but it's my own fault because I fell behind in lectures. If you do your work you should be fine and the curve of the class helps.
Miller is funny, engaging, and obviously very bright. The lectures cover the material efficiently and in language that is easy to understand. Miller is the best. Everyone loves Gunderson, but Miller is much more engaging and very passionate.
Dr. Miller is a real gem. No, really. Cares about every student. Hilarious lectures (I appreciate a good, dry sense of humor). Dr. Miller gives in-depth explanations of every problem, welcomes any question, and makes sure all understand. The hy-flex live-streamed classes were great backup. I wish Dr. Miller could teach all my classes!
Dr. Miller was not my stats professor, but I watched her lecture recordings online. She is very engaging, funny, and informative. The lectures were very easy to follow. I would recommend watching Dr. Miller's lecture stream to any stats student!
Dr. Miller is absolutely awesome. The course is pretty easy: requires about 1-2 hours for the online homework and a half hour for the easy prelabs each week and then studying for the exams. The lectures were available online so you didn't really have to attend except for labs. Also, Dr. Miller is easy to reach, helpful and funny.
I like Dr. Miller! I know most people will opt for Dr. Gunderson, but I honestly prefer Dr. Miller's style of teaching! Very clear, and takes extra time to go over some concepts to make sure that students really grasp them well. Definitely suitable for me because I take time when it comes to Maths. Recommended!
Dr. Miller explained things well and clearly which helped for exams and homework. I know that everyone recommends Gunderson, but personally I prefer and would recommend Dr. Miller. Dr. Miller also has a good sense of humor which helps to make stats which can sometimes be dry and dense into a more enjoyable experience.
Eng. students who like proof-based mathematics: Take this class to fulfill your stats requirement, and then take math 451/stats 425/500-levels for deeper/proofier understanding. I tried to take stats 426 two semesters in a row, dropped both times b/c of AWFUL profs. Meanwhile, Dr. Miller is the most fair/clear/organized prof. I've ever had. 10/10
Totally mess! She does not emphasize any essence of statistics, instead, the professor used dogmatism to regulate you. when answering very easy questions The material of the course is too easy. I didn't learn anything in this course.
This is by FAR the worst class I have taken in this school. The professor contributes highly to that opinion. The lectures are painfully slow and there is hardly any explanation of the math behind the material. The professor just tells you it is how it is. Very difficult to stay interested, AND THERE IS NO CURVE. Bad professor, boring class.
Awesome professor. Super friendly, always smiling, and does a good job of explaining difficult material. Office hours are helpful if you're confused about anything. Dr. Miller is very patient when you have questions, and a very easy professor to talk to. I'm the furthest thing from a "math person," but I'd take the class again if need be.
If you're a "non-math person" like myself, I would easily recommend Professor Miller. Lectures were very clearly and straight-forward but what sets them aside is office hours. Professor Miller goes above and beyond to help you understand the material and is just a genuinely nice person.
Dr. Miller is not only a phenomenal professor, they're also hilarious. Would crack a ton of jokes during lecture that kept me interested and also got the point across. I would recommend taking stats 250 with them over every other professor. Super accessible in office hours, they're solely the reason I like stats as much as I do.
If you're the type of person who doesn't perform on exams, this class isn't for you. The class is graded on a straight scale that leaves no room for mistakes; the graders are obsessive about nickel and diming. Lectures weren't helpful and I don't feel that I learned very much. Material is easy and should be an easy A but the scale is ridiculous.
I think Dr. Miller is great. No surprises on the exams and they're very caring. If you follow the reviews and the in-class examples they prepare, you'll do great. There isn't a curve, but it shouldn't be breaking news to anyone that a STATS professor at a prestigious, research university, with 300+ students is going to curve. You don't need one.
Dr. Miller is extremely organized so you know exactly what is expected. You are expected to go to lecture and print out the notes before class. Lecture is really just them filling out the blank notes but attendance counts. There is always one homework assignment per week. Very willing to answer questions. Talks about their dogs a lot.
I loved their class. They are very funny during lecture and really tries to make the lectures interesting. My GSI was a tough grader but I did fine. The homework is kind of heavy but you have a week to do it. They are really knowledgeable about stats and I highly respect them. Amazing class and professor.
Dr. Miller was a great stats professor. You should only take STATS 412 if you have a very strong math background, including Calc 3. Her lectures were very clear; she just has you fill in notes worksheets. Very accessible in office hours for homework questions and general understanding. Would recommend.
The most caring professor I've ever had.
Tests account for 90% of grade. Hw is doable. Wording must be precise. Lectures are live streamed. Good teacher but pace is slow at times.
Great lecturer, easy course, especially compared to other engineering courses. Just do your homework and the exam reviews and it's an easy A.
I liked Dr. Miller. They're very knowledgeable in statistics, respectful towards students, and always prepared for class. I didn't like their dry lectures though. I found that the lecture notes were not very beneficial to study from, and wished they put their slides online. Tip: know the grading criteria well (especially for the 2nd&3rd exams).
Dr. Miller was a great professor. They articulated concepts clearly and made expectations very clear for exams. Extremely doable class but you should really take it to have Dr. Miller in class.
Great prof, very clear in lecture, as well as on expectations for homework and exams. Underrated dry sense of humor.
If you aren't a math person but need requirements, this is the professor/course for you. They are kind and clear in lecture and office hour. The final is harder than the earlier tests so watch out for that; overall not bad. Attendance is technically required but if you participate/pay attention while there, they are willing to let some absences go.
Dr. Miller was a pretty good professor. Honestly this class is very by the numbers formula plugging. You don't even have to memorize them since they give you a formula sheet for the exams. Where they get you is the wording and specifics. It's honestly quite frustrating since you'll probably be marked down for random specifics so be careful.
Dr. Miller is amazing! I loved going to their classes. They explained concepts in a way that is very easy to understand and prepared us for the exams very well. All around great class and great professor.
Despite the class having to be moved online, the SU20 course was excellently taught. Dr. Miller had great lecture notes and kept us entertained with adorable photos of her dog. It's not difficult to succeed in the class - follow along with the prof's practice problems in the lectures and make sure you really understand the concepts.
Just a good teacher and a good guy. Will cover everything in lecture that you would see on a test. I wish all my stats classes were like 412.
Prof. Miller is solid. They teach the class clearly and are very good about answer questions in lecture and on Piazza. From what I've heard, they're significantly better than the other 412 professors. Definitely a good professor, and worth taking a less ideal class time to get.
Dr. Miller is a gem. Even in my 500 student lecture, I was able to build a relationship with them outside of class. They're so kind, understanding, and patient and they are so good at explaining stats! Dr. Miller makes me want to take more stats classes.
Jack Miller is the best math(ish) professor I've ever had. They are super caring and explain the course material very well. Everyone says how STATS250 is very hard, but I cannot imagine how you could do bad in the course if you have Jack. The tests/quizzes are not tricky and they prepare you well. Warning: the labs/HW get overwhelming some weeks
Dr. Miller is a great professor. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and he is very understanding. He and his team work to make the class as accessible as possible. As long as you attend lectures and seek help if you need it (they offer a lot), you will be fine.
Professor Miller is amazing. They were so understanding and accommodating given the circumstances and you can tell they truly want their students to thrive. The exams were straightforward and the practice exams useful. They were very passionate about stats and I enjoyed their lectures. Very thankful to have someone like them in covid times.
Amazing teacher, Doc really cares about his students and has a great team with him teaching Stats 250. The lectures are organized and outline all topics covered in homework, and he gives many chances for extra credit. If you ever get the chance to take his class you will not regret it. Good amount of work but it pays off :)
Dr. Miller is one of the best professors ever. They care for their students so much and created leeway in the syllabus to account for extra time needed on sections. There is also extra credit throughout the semester. Dr. Miller's lectures were super organized. Also, the homework is very representative of the test content!
Jack miller is awesome. They truly want you to succeed, and they make the exams fairly easy if you just watch the lectures. Would 10/10 recommend taking their class for stats250. I do want to point out though, if you're looking to collaborate with other stats250 takers in other classes, he does teach things a little different (honestly better).
Doctor Miller is an amazing professor. They really care about their students. When the students said how overwhelmed they were with everything (pandemic times) they pushed a due date back to accommodate us. If you watch lectures and do lab/homework you can pass.
Dr. Miller is a great person but they always get off-topic during the lectures. They are a very understanding person and often changed due dates for the students because they would understand when they were overwhelmed. The problem was they have the GSI's do everything grading wise and nothing was ever graded in a timely manner and it got out bad.
Dr. Miller was such a great prof, highly recommend. They give lots of extra credit throughout the semester. You dont need the textbook; everything that is taught in lecture is the same material that shows up in homework and exams. Keep up with lectures and other work, and youll do great!
Dr. Miller is easily the best professor I've ever had. They care about students' mental health and it shows (extra credit, extensions). They set up the hw in a way that prepares you for exams best. Their guided notes are crucial to understanding material, so pay attention! I usually struggle in STEM classes (@ umich), but they made it feel easy.
So much work it's insane. The class makes no sense and the grading is extremely unclear
Dr. Miller is one of the best. Their course is a good balance of not so difficult as to be a source of fear and stress, but requires enough work to truly understand the material. If you have to take stats, take it with Dr. Miller. Plenty of extra credit, lots of help available, and most importantly, Dr. Miller is a joy to take a course from.
Fair grading doesn't exist All labs are hard, if you make one mistake you lose half of the points Going to lecture is torture Goes off on tangents about his dog and love life Online made this claim better but still unbareable Teacher and gsi suck, dont take
I gave the teacher an 5 but I don't really know. I stopped going to lectures first week of class. Here's how to get an A in this class. 1. Do the extra credit in labs. 2. Two days before your exam read all the "filled-in lecture notes." 3. One day before your exam do the practice test. Extremely easy class you just have to do the boring hw and labs
Dr. Miller is an amazing lecturer who made Stats 250 doable and even enjoyable. Prior to taking this class, I heard so many awful things about Stats 250 at Michigan, but Dr. Miller really made the class manageable, and I learned a lot of useful and interesting statistical concepts. Definitely choose Dr. Miller if you have to take Stats 250.
Don't really need to attend lectures (but the filled in course notes will be your best friend for exams). HW and labs are quite a drag but the extra credit (added about 3.2% to final grade this term but I'm sure it varies) will save you as well as their forgiving drop policy. Practice exams are relevant and quite helpful.
Borderline joke of a class. You don't even need to do well on tests to get an A. I got a 90 on my first test, 85 on my second, and an 82 on my final exam and still ended with an A because of the extra credit. You also don't have to attend lectures.
Take STATS 250 with Dr. Miller if you can! They're very caring and want you to succeed in the class. Labs and homework can be confusing at times, but attending their office hours or the GSIs' will really help. The practice exams are also very helpful. Dr. Miller says a lot of quirky things but it makes lecture interesting, they're so wholesome.
STATS 250 with Dr. Miller was a joy. Dr. Miller explained everything in lecture in a clear, concise way, and made it clear that they care about student's wellbeing. Also Dr. Miller frequently shares pictures of their dog Luna, and I guarentee that they can help you through even the toughest of times. 10/10 would reccomend
Would not have taken this course with anyone else. Jack was an astounding Intro Stats professor, never sacrificing thorough explanations of material for time, even willing to push back course content if they felt they hadn't explained it well enough yet. It's amazing how much I've learned about this subject despite coming in with no experience!
Miller is the PRIME choice for this class. I had some AP Stats experience, so this class built off of it wonderfully. Dr. Miller makes sure to be super equitable and inclusive in their teaching and it shows. They are so passionate about this topic and it really helps the topics be fun.
Easily one of the best teachers or professors I've ever had. Miller is the kind of prof that not only genuinely wants their students to succeed but also wants everyone to fully understand the material. All profs should tale note of how Miller runs their class. They made stats an absolute breeze.
The best professor I've had at Michigan. Every thing is laid out very clearly, there are no surprises. The homework and labs genuinely help you actively learn the material. Dr. Miller and the Stats team were unbelievably accommodating and helpful throughout the entire term. Whatever grade you want, there is a way to get it. Take this class!!!
Best professor I ever had at Umich and Im a Junior. He took his time to answer students sufficiently and with respect. He was soooo kind and the exams reflected the practice exam we did and the questions in class. Although the labs/coding was confusing, help was available and it was completely manageable. Super fair grading, fair exams, best class
Doc is super great. They really do want to make Stats as engaging and fun as possible. As someone who is NOT a STEM person, I anticipated a bad grade in this class, but there is so much extra credit and so many "life-happens" policies meant to let everyone do really well. Just do all the EC and the practice tests for exams and you'll do well.
Dr Miller is the kindest, most caring, most inclusive professor I've had. I am SO glad I listened to the RateMyProf ratings at the time of my enrollment and picked Dr Miller. Even for a non-STEM major, the material is straightforward and digestible. Make sure you do all the homework and labs. Dr Miller makes the class super fun and worthwhile.
best stats 250 prof FS!! okay so, take ur lab on Mon/Tue TRUST ME. GO TO LECTURES ,as the sem went on people slacked DONT DO IT TO YOURSELF!! pay attention bc hw/exams are VERY similar to the lec. COLLAB W PEOPLE! Go to GSI hours (Avery, Roman, Elaine, Aldo, Jes!) DO BOTH the practice exam AND lec review for exams TRUST ME, ! u got this, get that A
SO MANY RESOURCES. Dr. Miller really wants you to do well and provides the material to do so. I seriously slacked off and did the hw 30 minutes before they were due– don't do that !!!! If you put even a little bit of effort, you will get an A with doc. I did not and still passed with a B, but use everything provided and you will do so much better
Doc really cares about students, and understands that most of their students are only taking STATS 250 because their major requires it. I hate statistics and was immensely bored, but I still got an A without too much effort. For people who do enjoy stats, Doc is also a great instructor. GSI quality can vary a lot, but labs are pretty simple.
Super super nice professor but teaches an overwhelming amount of material for a non-math/numbers oriented person imo. The labs are coding stuff and its kinda confusing but you understand the lecture material a bit more but again a little much for someone who has never coded. Exams are exactly like the practice exam. Good feedback on homework!
They were an OK professor. Class is very hard if this is new for you or you don't like stats. TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL AS SOON AS THE SEM STARTS!! This is the type of class where if you get too deep into it without having a good grasp on the beginning content, you will be sorry.
The professor is respectful but they don't do anything to acknowledge the fact that a lot of students are taking stats 250 as their first math class and when anyone complained, we were told to just deal with it because "stats at umich is hard" I wouldn't recommend taking this class if it's not a req for anything.
Dr. Miller was a great prof! Biggest advice: stay on top of things from the beginning. Stats 250 is a huge course and it's very easy to fall behind so as long as you attend lectures and labs, this course is not too bad. Dr. Miller also gives numerous extra credit opportunities and other policies to boost your grade which is very helpful.
Miller is a good professor -- they gave us plenty of extra credit, all the resources we needed, etc. I can see how this can be difficult as a first stats class, but they really did lay out everything we needed. My only complaint is that lectures were often very off-topic sometimes - when they could have been more concise and right to the main idea.
Miller is a great professor, he's very kind and gave so many opportunities for extra credit. I personally don't like statistics which made the lectures boring for me, which led to me procrastinating and stressing out before exams. Do a little bit of the homework and labs each day, even if its just like 3 q's and your life will be better trust me.
I feel like the people who are giving Dr Miller a bad rating are just upset because they got a few bad grades on the labs. While I do agree the labs are very bad at giving partial credit, Dr. Miller is very good at explaining concepts while keeping it entertaining enough. If you have taken stats before, this class will be an easy A
Dr. Miller was a very good professor for Stats 250. I found the class to be straightforward and pretty easy (I also had prior stats experience), but I think Dr. Miller tried to make it as manageable as possible for all students. There were regular homework and lab assignments which could sometimes take a while. Tests were not very difficult.
Their lectures are quite boring and slow, and they're not even essential to understand the homework or labs. I pretty much just used lectures as a reference when I was stuck. I have no prior stats experience, but this class was easy to understand. They have a lot of outside help and resources, so if you use those and do the homework you'll be fine
Professor Miller has very mundane lectures, they often get sidetracked in lectures and it results in the lecture being very hard to follow or pay attention to. We pay thousands of $ to listen to you teach, not talk about Luna (their dog) or the diag squirrels every day. Overall, I would not take Dr. Miller's class again and I recommend you don't.
He's great at teaching and has a wonderful sense of humor. Choose him for STATS 250 and you'll be fine!
