Very helpful, relates all theory to examples and draws parallels between theory and examples. Very vocal and engaging, the kind of prof that cares how well students do. highly recommended for anyone. Work assignments are very relevant, examinations are straight forward and relevant.

Prof. Vandenberg is the best teacher I've had in my 4 years at Carleton. He simplifies the material and gives real life examples on questions so that values are consistent with what you'd expect to see in the Engineering world. From this course I've learned to always 'keep my wits about me when solving these type of problems'

Ultimately one of the best profs I've ever had. Makes sure you understand the material, is very straight-forward and doesn't trick you with hard questions. If you got a bad mark in this class, you really deserved it, because Prof. Vandenberg literally served marks on a shining platter. Take CIVE3204 with him!!

This class is great for increasing your GPA, the 40 minute early dismissals were exhilarating; it gave me time to ponder about the meaning of life. Overall the midterm and exam were much easier than expected. Just make sure to get the quiz questions from classmates that have already done them. jack is amazing. really all you need to do is attend class write down the theory and go over examples. his evaluations were really good. although the final exam was marked hard but overall amazing guy.

I found him quite helpful. He would take his time going over concepts until he thought most of the class understood and he provided lecture notes before every class for people to bring along. He didn't spend much time on examples of questions but the PA sessions covered those pretty well. If you have questions he's quite approachable.

If you scroll down, everybody that disliked him was in Ecor 1101 That's a large class at large lecture halls, I was that dude in the back who always feel asleep because it was too far away and was just too lazy. Professor Vandenberg is a very knowledgeable, humble and down to earth person. Every time he meets you, he asks you how you find his course and he always makes sure he answers your questions fully. He has a heart touching character which makes being his student much more exiting.

Half the time, instead of actually solving a question, he explains how to solve a question, what we need to pay attention to etc; I found this method to be amazing (we save time in class), but some people might find it difficult.

By far my favorite prof. Students often mistake the class difficulty for the quality of the prof - in this case Jack is great but the course can be tough. Come to class, write down everything, do the practice problems (textbook is a must). His tangents are great too, you'll realize why you want to be an engineer if you didn't already know. 10/10

I would say the course is average on the difficulty scale however, the final was just crazy hard. Good prof but hard finals so prepare yourselves.

One of my favourites from first year engineering. He made the course very enjoyable; made it easy for me to get an A. He jokes about "buying into his system" of solving problems but its the best advice one could take. He thoroughly teaches you how to "attack" a problem and it makes solving a problem much more efficient. Take Jack if you can!

Had him for Mechanics of Soilds I. If you attend his lectures and pay attention (note taking isn't as important); do the practice problems the same day as the lecture A+ is pretty much confirmed for you.

Go to class and do some of all of the suggested problems

If you're a second year civil engineering undergrad, then Jack Vandenberg is going to be your best professor by far. Presents complex material in the lectures very clearly, quick and fair marker, will answer any questions before, during, and after class. Provides the groundwork to tackle problems, but you HAVE to practice to earn a good grade.

I had Vanderberg for ECOR 1101 as well, so when I got him again for CIVE 2200, I was ready for whatever he threw at me. This course was harder but his teaching was the same. He is great at teaching the first part of Solids I, but not so much combined loading so you might want to learn that unit on your own. He is kind of boring for the most part.

The best first year prof I had. He states it's a tough course right away, but he shows you how to approach the problems so you only have to take it a little farther. Listen to how he would solve them - it really does help. He taught everything clearly and made sure we understood. The final was very difficult, but exams were based off the textbook.

ECOR 1101 is a fairly hard course with lots of new concepts and lots of homework. If you want to do well in this course having Jack as the prof will make it so much easier. He is amazing at explain the concepts in a way that everyone can understand and he will answer any question, anyone has to offer. Without Jack I would do as well as I did

Took ECOR1101 in my first year of engineering. Right off the bat he lets you know the expectations of the course its a heavy course load. Do ALL the suggested problems and you will do well. With that said he is genuinely the best prof I had in first year and is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Answers questions very well. Dank prof.

The best lecturer I have ever had. He is great at teaching students how to work through a problem like a real engineer. His tests have a bit of challenge to them, but are very fair and if you put in the work you will do well.

The material wasnt hard to grasp but if you slack in your reading or don't show up for classes then its easy for you to mix up the concepts. He's a very good prof, and knows how to expalin the material in a way that we understand it. Attendance isn't mandatory but it's very helpful and I definitely recommend attending the lectures.

Professor Vandenberg is the best educator I've met to date. He seriously cares about students understanding the material, he's clear about the expectations for evaluations, he's very understanding. Students are very comfortable asking questions in lectures because he repeats the material in a clear, slow way and never shows a hint of condescension.

Its a tough course as it moves at a quick pace. Jack shows how to solve each problem and the steps for it. The midterms were easy compared to the final which was pretty hard. Quizzes were also tough depending on the question you got. Jack is also great at answering emails and cares about his student. PASS is also really helpful

One of the few good professors i met

Jack was a great prof overall. The only complaint I had with the course was his focus on using online quizzes instead of handwritten ones as the online seemed to be the cause of many headaches. His lectures are clear and he goes through very detailed problem sets so make sure you go to lecture! His office hours are extremely helpful too!

Jack is a great prof. Cive2200 starts out very easy but once you get to about week 8 things start to get more difficult. Make sure to ask questions when youre stuck on something. If you have the option to take it with Jack, I highly recommend you do. He's very engaging and teaches most concepts well. He also uses a lot of real life applications.

Prof. Vandenberg is a solid professor. His lectures are great and he explains concepts very well. He warned us that the course material was difficult, and he wasn't wrong. The midterm was okay, but the exam was tough. The group project was pretty terrible, as there was no communication between the prof and the TAs and the instructions were unclear.

Jack is one of my fav profs. He is caring and a little cheeky! The course is extremely interesting and fun, but you have to stay on top of material. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. The concepts are not hard, but a lot of practice is required. All exams/tests are basically from textbook questions. The course is extremely well organized. Office hours are helpful

Lectures can get very boring, repetitive and even confusing at times due to the nature of the materials. However, He tries his best to make it clear and will even be willing to repeat an entire half of a lecture to make sure you understand of the material. Sit closer to the front as his voice may get unclear and he heavily uses the board.

Jack is one of the best profs in the Eng department. His lectures are perfectly crafted and are straight to the point . The course is pretty difficult and to receive a good grade you really need to grind out practice problems from the textbook. Its the only way to succeed 1045.

Prof. Vandenburg is an exceptional prof that is able to explain concepts very well, however, the tests can be very unforgiving and somewhat unclear.

Really knows his stuff. If you do the work and keep pace with the class there's nothing too complicated, and if you ever need help with a question he's happy to go over it in his office hours. Exams are exactly like the recommended problems, so if you can do them there's nothing surprising.

A wonderful prof. I really enjoyed this class and I think he was one of the main reasons why. He teaches really well and tries to make you pick up on good habits that will help you later on in the course every chance he gets.

Had him for ECOR 1045 in the fall and failed, took me retaking it with another prof to realize how good I had it haha. I now have him for 1046 and I think hes a great prof, only problem I have is when he comes up to an example in a lecture and hes like this is easy solve it yourself. Otherwise, great prof, dont listen to these 1 star reviews.

Jack's a real gem, classic eng professor. Lays out the material in a timely, logical manner. Very fair assignments and quizzes as well. The midterm and final featured some problems that hadn't been featured elsewhere before, but were very manageable provided a logical approach. Makes me want to switch to civil to get more classes with him.

Very good at explaining the course content and showing how to solve the problems. Make sure you choose and complete practice problems in the textbook on your own after the lectures and you will be fine. Make sure you get the solution manual for the textbook. It'll only take like 2 minutes of googling.

Great teacher! It's definitely a difficult class but he does the best to prepare his students for evaluations. He taught the material in a way that made complex concepts easier to understand. I really enjoyed the two classes that I took with him.

One of the few Profs that are passionate about their jobs. I had him for ECOR1045 , ECOR1046, his lectures were great and provided examples in them. I can't lie the tests were really hard as these courses are considered the "weed out" courses for first year engineering students. My advice is to practice and most importantly don't procrastinate.

He's great. Does his office hours during Lecture times though, which is kinda annoying.

Good notes and answers questions clearly and thoroughly. Just don't use your phone or get up to leave in the middle of class or he will probably put you on the spot.

Keeps it real. He warned us of the ~60% pass rate right away but gave advice about how to stay on top of things. Quizzes and assignments every week; they were tough, but his exams were very fair, nothing unexpected. He goes a bit fast but posts lectures beforehand, so read up to keep up. Always leaves 15min for questions at end of lectures.

Vandy the goat! His lectures are great to listen and problems he done in class were also very helpful. His exams are very fair and he is a very lenient marker. He does tend to skip steps during lecture problems since he has been doing this stuff for years and can easily do the problems fast in his head. Definitely wish he teaches upper year classes

Professor Vandenberg is one of the better professors that you can get in your first year of engineering. He explains concepts clearly and with plenty of examples. One gripe is that as the examples became more and more complicated, he would often only outline the solution and leave the solving to us. Overall, a solid prof, would take again.

He always has a professional demeaner. It's sort of like being taught by your manager, except the manager is always tired. The class was easy in the beginning and sped up extremely quickly towards the end. If you don't stay on top of things, you'll be left in the dust.

Jack was a good teacher. He teaches the material really quickly though but that is only due to the limited time for this course so he has too. If you pay attention in lectures and understand all the homework assignments you should be fine for all of the tests, midterms and exams. YouTube also has tons of videos on example practice problems.

As a lecturer, he is incredible. He teaches the content in ways that make sense and he has really good lecture slides. He's extremely open to questions and is always nice about it. His exams are a little brutal though. The content is fair, there just isn't enough time for them (he does warn you of that though).

Great educator and person, made learning this course feel like a hobby rather than a chore, which is how a degree should feel. He had a somewhat strict no-phone policy in lectures, but the lectures are engaging and well-paced enough that the rule rarely has to be enforced. Exams take exactly how long you're given, and they are difficult, but fair.

This prof is one of the best engineering profs at Carleton. His lectures and slides are well coordinated and his exams and marking styles are very reasonable. He also does not let students use their phones during class time.

I am in third year now, and Prof. Vandenberg is the best prof I have had to date. Amazing lectures, does tons of examples and very inspirational. His exams are completely fair and very similar to the lecture examples. Study the material and you will almost certainly get a good grade.

Prof. Vandenberg makes statics extremely easy if you attend the lectures. His lectures are enjoyable and he answers people's questions thoroughly. It's not one of those classes where the prof moves fast in the lecture. The midterm and final were both very fair and easy. You can do well on the final if you studied the entire course over a week.

Really good intro class for first year engineering. Really quality in-lecture teaching, and good slides. Tough exams and tough grading, lots of opportunity to do well.

ECOR 1045 is not a very hard class and Prof Vandenberg helps a lot with that. All I did was the questions from the lectures and I did very well. Prof Vandenberg does these questions in class, posts his own solution manuals for all of them, and these questions are on the exams. There were no surprises on the final or midterm.

Creates most of the test and exams and are very fair. Questions are either identical to practice problems in the lectures or similar. He explains concepts very well and ensures all the students understand by constantly answering questions. Go to class as its very helpful and just practice the problems you see. You will thank him.
