Probably the best professor at A&M. Its naturally a hard class, but he does a great job in explaining concepts. He's very animated in lecture so its easy to stay awake and interested in the material. If you can take his class, but just remember that OChem is still hard so you'll have to work.
Okay so I don't usually rate profs but this guy is an underdog. If you're taking Ochem I, take him! I literally made B's and A's on his first two tests even though Test 3 & 4 are a bit more challenging but it's expected. The tests are straightforward and he's very understanding. Also he can be quirky but you'll get used to it. He's on your side!
A nice guy who wants his students to learn. The downfall of this is that you can't get above a C with memory. Beware the short answer qs. He emphasizes being able to understand the concepts to the point where you can solve anything he throws at you. He doesn't provide tables for the different reactions and can be a bit scatter brained at times.
He cares about chemistry and learning, but it is definitely not a memorization class.
He's great, and I hear one of the easier ones. But O Chem is still tough. So go to his office hours, do all of the owl homework.
Dr. Waas was in his first semester at TAMU when I took this course, but he didn't let that stop him from showing his enthusiasm for both the university and organic chemistry. He is available to help outside of class, and genuinely cares about his students' success. He curves tests if need be to help students out.
Dr. Waas is a very good professor, and I wish I could take him for organic 2. He is extremely good at explaining, making things very easy to understand. The exams are straight-forward, but they do require a little textbook reading out of class to recognize a couple of the reactions. This class requires A LOT A LOT A LOT of memorization.
I took him as an 8am and thought he was absolutely fantastic. Easy to pay attention to. That being said, the kids bombing his exams were the ones not coming to class or studying. If you're worried that you're not going to pass/do well in OCHEM, just study and you're already ahead of 40% of his class. He also likes to give questions from lecture:)
I was scared going into ochem but Dr. Waas made it not so intimidating. He really cares about his students and if there are any questions about anything he's more than willing to help. You have to be willing to put in the work though! Study the text and really study what he puts in his notes. He does his best to keep everyone on the same page.
Tests are hard, worked very hard to just get a c. He does his best to explain the material in class and make class interesting however, his test are nothing like what is done in lecture
Dr. Waas is good at explaining Organic Chemistry, but it is OChem... expect it to be tough. There is a ton of memorization, but he does test over examples done in class. There is also weekly homework due on Sundays. He is quirky, so it is easy to pay attention.
DO NOT TAKE WAAS. He does not teach a single thing he just rambles on for more than half the class about stuff not even relevant to the material and spends maybe ten minutes lecturing on what you actually need to know. Tests are not reflective of the book or his lectures. I learned ten times more from the SI than I did from him. Not worth it.
This was Waas' first time teaching Ochem II at TAMU. With that being said, he is always scatter-brained when in lecture and doesn't seem to have a plan. We spend at least 20 minutes every day talking about something that won't pertain to what you need to know. Then he says that "he doesn't have enough time to show us an example." Don't take him.
The worst. The only reason I go to lecture is for clicker questions. He expects you to learn from the book, which is all you'll have since he spends 30 min going over random stuff in class. Tests are awful. You never know what to expect on them. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
So far my experince with him has been awful. He is not very organized, makes several mistakes on notes, exams, and in lecture. He makes the material more difficult than it should be. There is no way to prepare for his exams as well as none of the exams are the same. In addition, the exam questions are very random.
Dr. Waas was an amazing professor! I had him for both CHEM 227 and 228 and he really takes time to explain mechanisms thoroughly and checks with the class every step of the way to make sure they understand. He also has amazing office hours and is accessible all the time. Also very caring about students and curves GENEROUSLY (25 point curve once)
Loved this professor! I'm so confused at the comments saying his class/tests are unpredictable because they're the same format every time, you just have to memorize the mechanisms in his provided note packets and you'll at LEAST pass and with the curve get a B or A. He also factors in homework and attendance with your grade which helps a lot!
Good prof, explains things in detail. Tests are reasonable.
I went into Ochem 2 super excited since I enjoyed Ochem 1 a lot! Waas was the worst professor to teach me this subject. Yes, I understand this subject is not easy. However, he is so super scatterbrained to where I could not even pay attention in class. He talks more about what isn't going to be on the test than what is. The book is more sufficient
I took him for CHEM 227 and CHEM 228, don't regret either one. OWL can be annoying, but he helps a lot. Can get off topic in class with clarifications, but overall not bad. He reads through the book himself and makes class notes according to it. Homework helps understanding, struggle at first then it clicks.
Dr. Waas is the worst professor ever. PLEASE save yourself and take anyone else. His tests are impossibly hard and I studied for hours. When you ask him questions, he's like "I was clear the first time I said this" or "do it how we did it in class". Not helpful at all. I wish I would've listened to other people when they said not to take him.
Goes off on tangents; he talks more about what will NOT be on the exam than what is. Adds more chapters to his tests than any other professor, and goes out of order... so A+ tutoring or 4.0 & Go aren't even an option. Super tough grader, and OWLs are only counted for a tiny percentage of your grade. Would avoid taking him at all costs.
I can tell he genuinely cares about his students and I think that after 10 years of teaching at TAMU he'll probably be a really good prof, but as of now he's still new to A&M and honestly his class was a nightmare. He will spend 90% of the class on one problem and then try to teach an entire chapter during the last 10 minutes.
The tests are very straightforward. Problems are just like what's in the notes/lecture, no trick questions. He spends a lot of time clarifying his standards. He posts notes to print out/complete in class, but it's better to take your own and go to his office if needed. O chem 2 is hard no matter what, but Dr. Waas makes it manageable.
Dr. Waas does not teach the same chapters as the other ochem profs- so you can forget going to a tutoring service. He tries to cram in biochem chapters at the end. He spends most of class talking about how much time we don't have and what wont be on the exam as opposed to just teaching the material. Clicker questions and lots of OWLs. Avoid!
He cares about his students. He wants them to succeed. You just need to put the required work into the class.
For a teacher who spends 99% of lecture time stressing the importance of clarity, he does not post any notes, study guides, or relevant practice exams so you are left unclear how to even begin studying for his exams. He goes off on tangents every other minute. You're likely going to have to self teach yourself a lot of material with this professor.
He spends a lot of time making things more confusing and complicated than what they have to be, to the point that it is impossible to follow what he is even saying during lecture. It is impossible to take notes in lecture because he is so disorganized and you have no idea what he is even on about most of time. Take another professor at all costs.
Waas was by far the worst professor that I have ever had. To say he is a teacher is an insult to the word itself. His class is taught with the expectation that students can and will teach themselves. His lecture provides no insight and is only helpful to those who have mastered the material on their own. Completely useless. DO NOT take him!
He rambles on. Like A LOT. He talks about stuff that doesn't pertain to the material and exam at all, and his excuse is that he "doesn't teach according to exams." Any other professor can take maybe 5 minutes to explain something clearly and easy. Dr waas will take 25 minutes. He is seriously very scatterbrained.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Does not know how to teach at all. He's available for office hours but responds to questions with answers like, "you need to know everything in the book" or "I can't tell you whats on the exams, even if you asked him to explain a theory and didn't even bring up the exam. Would not recommend.
Dr. Wass' exams are SUPER easy, in my opinion. Although he doesn't have time to go into details during lecture, he explains what he does go over very well. That being said, I read the whole textbook but only went to SI for test review sessions. Homework is the standard OWLs, which you can do just by going to lecture. Funny and cares about students.
People are saying he is bad, but he's actually pretty good. He is very clear on what he teaches and what he wants us to know. EVERYTHING in his lecture WILL be on the test. He does ramble a bit, but it helps more than hurts. 4 exams and 1 final. All you have to do is practice and go his office hours + SI it'll be fine. Oh, and OWLS sucks!
Don't bother showing up for lecture, you will be better off teaching yourself. Just show up for his attendance points which he gives at the beginning of class.
His lectures are excruciating, and he rants for half of the time. He explains things well but will then rant for 10 minutes about something unimportant. And then he'll try to squeeze in a whole topic in the last five minutes.
I feel bad giving him such a low rating, bc he seems like a nice guy who genuinely wants students to do well. But he is a terrible lecturer. Spends the entire class beating one or two examples to death - I timed it once, he spent 25 mins on a warm-up clicker question. I stopped going to lectures bc of how infuriatingly repetitive he is. Don't take.
I feel bad that he's getting such a bad rap. He genuinely cares about the success of his students and wants them to succeed. The lectures aren't the most organized so outside work will be required, but his tests felt very fair compared to the other ochem professors. He fairly curved every single test and assignment as well.
Stopped going to lecture because it was such a waste of time listening to him. He was probably the worst professor I've ever had at tamu so far.
Great professor. Made a difficult subject easy to understand, and he genuinely cares about his students. Definitely recommend.
Organic chemistry is not going to be a walk in the park no matter what professor you have. He takes attendance so you have to go to class but its a free 10% of your grade if you attend his lectures. If you just go to lecture you won't do well on the exams, you need to go to tutoring/SI to succeed. He curves every exam, the final exam, & final grade
Professor Waas is a very kind and caring guy. His lectures don't necessarily give you tons of information but if you study on your own time you should succeed. His tests are VERY straight forward and he never tries to trick you. Curves everything if he needs too.
By far the worst professor Ive ever taken at Texas A&M. Did not learn anything and with me going to SI, didnt help as much. Says he curves every exam but thats not true. Be expected to teach yourself.
Dont take him if you are not very good at self studying. The worst thing is you have to go to class to get attendance points when the lectures are a waste of time. Almost got a B because of the attendance too. On the test, he wants you to do things in a specific way that's different from the book and owl. His grading is sometime ridiculous. Avoid
Before taking Organic Chemistry 1 with Dr. Waas, I was really nervous because his rating was so low on ratemyprofessor, but he is one of the best professors I've ever had. I'm taking him again for Ochem 2. He's very clear about his expectations and grades fairly. His tests are free response and he gives partial credit. 10/10 would recommend.
DONT listen to the terrible reviews please. I am literally an average student (ive gotten Cs in almost all my sciences, took ochem1 twice, etc) I didnt waste money on A+ tutoring and I ended with a B. Yes, you must teach yourself a lot. But if you can do that, read through his notes, GO TO SI, DO PRACTICE EXAMS! youll be fine. CURVES!!!
His class is a joke with big curves. He only goes over 2-3 example per lecture. Dont take if you actually want to learn!
He was a professor who truly cared about the material and his students. However, this does not mean he is a good lecturer. Most of class was wasted on his clicker questions, talking about the material rather than learning it, or just random off topic things. I stopped going to class and just learned from the textbook and did better than most others
Practice exams are very similar to the exams given in class. Very structured lectures and gives you exactly what you need to know on the exams. He gives you full credit on hw as long as you average 80+ on it. Helpful during office hours. I studied the night before his exams but an A/B is possible if you give a little bit of effort. A very nice guy.
Waas is one of the worst professors I've ever had. Yes he is passionate about organic chemistry and wants his students to do well. His Ochem 2 exams are filled with Ochem 1 reactions. He barely covers any material in lecture (like 2 mechanisms in an hour) - they are useless. Go to APlus if want a chance at passing. Do NOT take Waas
What terrible, rambling lectures. I struggled to focus in class because he talks so much about his cat interspersed with actual organic chemistry that I would tune out and then lose focus. I got an A in organic 1 and this class was such a train-wreck. I'm wondering if I should q-drop but I'm hoping for a curve.
This dude had hentai playing during his lecture so he just turned off the projector and didn't use it all class... Also terrible teacher, he yells if you ask questions he thinks are dumb and explains the most basic things for like 15 minutes while ignoring bigger topics that he actually needed to talk about.
This professor was truly horrific; I am not exaggerating. He spends wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long on questions and therefore leaves little to no time on the essential topics that need to be taught/covered. I found myself needing to teach myself everything from the textbook, which did NOT go well. His teaching style is just terrible.
Dr. Waas was one of my least favorite professors. Although he is caring and nice, he puts no effort into changing his teaching styles even when its obvious that his students are confused. He made it seem like he would curve the class a lot at the end, yet he didnt, which resulted in his sections having the highest Q-Drop/fail rate I have seen.
You can tell that Dr. Waas knows his stuff, but he just can't articulate it clearly for students. I pretty much only go to class to get clicker points & I appreciate how much clicker/homework is worth in the class. The only reason I'm doing okay in the class is because I go to every single SI session, and my SI is great. Would not recommend Waas.
No consistency. For example, his lectures may make no mention of a reaction you need to know from the book, but it may appear on the exam anyway. He would also say that a mechanism from the book is wrong, and you need to learn it his way. I'd appreciate some more clarity for when I study, especially when the book contains plenty of useless info.
Dr. Waas is a nice person, but a horrible lecturer. He will spend 30 minutes on one clicker questions nailing you about "Why this happens" and will read WORD FOR WORD off of his notes that he posts online. Coming to class is a waste of time, as he never does any examples. I studied my butt off and failed all his tests.
Man this class was frustrating since he would tell us to learn something in lecture but have a whole other mechanism than the book. He's a smart guy but he just can't articulate what he's trying to say. Also when my grader messed up for my exam, it took me 15 min to convince waas to even look at my exam. . GO to SI sessions, they will help.
Dr. Waas wasn't a great lecturer, but going to lecture did help with material on the tests. He does beat examples way too hard, though. He really cares about his students. I had to learn mostly from the textbook. Definitely study his practice tests and the lecture notes for the exams. Going to A+ really helps.
he needs more credit than given. he is one of the nicest profs I have ever talked to and has office hours monday through friday and is more than willing to help. exams are not too bad, and as long as you read text book and put in the effort to learn the material you will be fine. solid prof.
Waas is a great man, and cares about his students. Him and Krish are the hardest ochem professors by far. First class I have almost made a B in. do not not not recommend, even with going to aplus.
Waas is extremely unorganized and his notes are not helpful. He does not help you at all when you go talk to him about where you stand in the class. His tests in the beginning were fair, but then once it got to the last two they were absolutely terrible. Expect to teach yourself.
He is one of the nicest professors I have encountered. I would not take his class if it can be avoided. A plus is a must and you are on your own for the final even though other professors provide reviews. Tests would have concepts that were not covered and class GPA is about a 2. check jippylong grade distribution.
Dr. Waas is very compassionate about ochem, but he gets off topic very quickly during lecture. He posts old hour exams with keys for each test minus the final. Attendance is graded by clickers usually every week. Get a ClutchPrep subscription for his class, its the reasons I got an A. A+ is ok, but it doesnt directly teach what he lectures.
By far my favorite prof yet, I struggle to make A's and yet easily pulled out a high A for Ochem 1. Because he is such a character, he is easy to listen to. He is also a very nice guy that really wants to help. He is a legend in my books and I will be back for Ochem 2.
He was a good professor and tried to explain concepts, but mostly the textbook with be used to teach you and OWL. I liked him as a person, I personally don't think his lectures helped me. His best quotes of the year: "They are legit chiral", "my students begged me to stop", "Radical, not like in the political sense," and "lets go crazy."
First things first: if you dont like chemistry, you will struggle in college chemistry. CHEM 222 is supposed to be the easy ochem and its still incredibly challenging. BUT, Dr. Waas is one of the best chemistry professors Ive had. Hes always asking for feedback and questions and constantly shows that he cares about his students.
One time he took off points because my bond angles weren't 109.5. There were no slides in class. He just talked at you and drew on the board. He takes attendance with the iClickers so show up! I honestly would not take him again; I felt like he wasn't very organized with the material. He went off on tangents mentioning Ch 14 stuff in ch 6 lectures.
Dr. Waas is one of the more challenging professors because he expects you to learn the material to do well. As long as you read the book, and listen to lecture (where he highlights important things that will be on the test), you will do great in his class. His practice exams are great indication of how you'll do on the real exam.
Dr. Waas is phenomenal! Ochem will be hard no matter who you take. Waas places A LOT of importance on actually knowing the material and why things happen vs just memorizing reactions. (I don't have a single reaction memorized.) This truly sets you up for success on the MCAT or graduate tests. He is super wholesome and VERY accessible.
I took Dr. Waas for ochem 1 & 2 & I genuinely enjoyed having him as a professor. I was really nervous about ochem but he drew everything out on the board so it was easy to follow and not get behind. I had him during the transition online from COVID & he was so good at communicating to us & making sure everyone was on the same page. Highly recommend
One of the most understanding and caring profs I had this semester. So willing to work with us as a class and was very understanding. Take him!!!
He is very generous with curves. Nice guy, good lecturer, but gets sidetracked easily. If you do your HW and pay attention in lecture you should pass easily. I really enjoyed his class!
If you learn better from slides and have a hard time learning chemistry from a textbook, PLEASE dont take him. Not a good lecturer and you have to teach yourself everything. He goes through material very quickly and will always try to squeeze new material in the last few minutes of class. SI this semester was not good :(
Dr. Waas has been the most accommodating professor I have had in this pandemic. Ochem is just a difficult class, but if you attend all the lectures and keep up with the homework, you will do fine.
Dr. Waas was one of the most wholesome/caring professors I've ever had. He is extremely accessible outside of class, and it feels like he truly wants his students to succeed. All his tests are straightforward and similar to the practice exams given w/ keys. He can get sidetracked at times but it gave ADD students like me a nice break in lecture lol
Dr. Waas by all means is a great person. However, the way he teaches is hard to follow. He pretty much just skims over material from the textbook and expects you to know it. He grades extremely hard on tests and he is VERY VERY SLOW at getting your grades back. Exam 1 grades would not be completed until after you have taken Exam 2. Would not take.
Waas is a nice guy, but I did have to teach the material to myself. I did not like the format of this class bc he is not a good lecturer, and often it was hard to pay attention. HW is OWL. Tests are curved depending. He cares and wants everyone to pass! He gives mock exams which HELP so do them!!!
Dr. Waas is a really sweet person but I would not take him again. He doesnt go in detail about concepts he expects you to know. His test are 100% free response which wastes a TON of time. Even if I knew what I was doing, I never had enough time to finish a singe exam. Takes FOREVER to grade the exams. Had to drop.
Waas is a really great prof, the class is difficult, but that's not his fault, that's just how OChem is. He really tries his best to help you in class, and he gives practice exams which are incredibly similar to the actual thing. He was also really quick and fair with regrades if you had issues with the graders.
I dont understand the low ratings at all. Dr. Waas is extremely knowledgeable in the subject and communicates it clearly in class with a lot of side information in the notes that wont be tested on. Homework is owl, he curved every test and each test was very similar to the practice test. No reason not to take him.
LOVE Dr. Waas! He made notes that you could follow along with in his lectures, which helped me a ton! HW was OWL. He did get distracted a few times in lecture, but nothing major. Curves very graciously. Put in the work and you'll do fine. Such a gem!
Ok so Waas is SO sweetnuinely cares a/b his students. but you pretty much have to teach yourself, he expects you to come to class knowing the material and he basically just gives more examples. OWL homework ,1-3 assignments per week. Iclicker questions are like 20% of ur grade so go to class LOL.
If you get Waas, drop and just take it next semester, it's not worth it and will probably make you hate STEM. We were the only class that had all free-response exams that weren't open-note during COVID. His lectures were all over the place and typically the notes would only take up half of one page. Basically, you have to teach yourself.
He was a good professor and it was helpful that he uploaded his lectures to youtube so you can rewatch and take notes. It is a difficult course by nature, but he curves heavily and tries to help you succeed. Grades were based on owl assignments and exams.
Waas isn't actually that bad of a prof, nor was 222 that difficult. He added massive curves to exams, his lectures were easy to pay attention to and understand, and he was pretty lenient and helpful when it came to certain things. If you study a little and have a good grasp on the homework you'll be fine.
Dr. Waas was a great professor. He always told us exactly what to expect everyday before starting class, what kind of content would be on the test, and would help us as best to his ability. He really does care about his students. Go to lecture, look over the old exams, read the textbook, and do the homeworks and you'll be fine. Also BIG curves.
Dr. Waas is a super nice guy, which makes this rating so unfortunate. He genuinely cares about his students, but his lectures are so hard to follow and his tests are very difficult. He does curve a lot but we haven't had an exam this year with an average higher than 59% so far. You'll be teaching yourself ochem 2, which isn't easy. Go to A+ tutors.
I LOVE O-Chem, but this prof will simply not teach you. Pre-meds stay away. Nice or not, a prof is being paid to provide a service and Dr. Waas only does the minimum to supply that to his students. Unorganized. Non-understanding. Non-concerned. I'm a real try hard student and usually never blame profs, but Dr. Waas ain't it y'all. 53% ExamAVG-TOTAL
Please take another professor. Nice person but bad teacher. 60% of your grade comes from exams. He "teaches you to understand the material" which really means that he goes in depth with some material but not enough with others. I have never gotten a grade below a B in all of my 3 years at college and now I have to retake this class.
Covers one topic of about 6 from each chapter in the lecture but you are responsible for it all so you have to teach yourself. The exam-free response is usually either all right or all wrong, and he won't negotiate on partial credit. Very unhelpful at all times so you have to know everything inside and out.
While Waas is a nice person, he isn't that great at teaching and I had to learn the material on my own - and use A+ tutoring and I still had to drop the class. Would not recommend unless you already know Ochem very well to begin with.
Dr. Waas is by no means kind or helpful but will present most of the material on the exams. The best way to succeed in his class is to go to class and memorize ALL mechanisms in class and then memorize the chapter review reactions. It is a lot of memorization and a lot of self-learning but that is Ochem. He does curve BIG. GO TO SI!
Idk why he has such bad reviews, he's actually amazing (I think that and I didn't get the best grade too) Ochem is a super hard class but he genuinely makes it so much easier. Dr.Serrano took over our class bc he got sick and I'm 99% sure she's the reason I didn't get an A. He gives SOO much extra credit & actually cares abt his students doing well
Dr. Waas gets bad reviews because he doesn't cover every inkling of material in class. This is unfortunate because what he does do is give you a GREAT grasp on the foundational topics, which makes it far easier to understand the rest, given you take the time to do so. More extra credit than I could have dreamed, and low grade cutoffs. 86 = A.
"Dr. Waas gets bad reviews because he doesn't cover every inkling of material in class. This is unfortunate because what he does do is give you a GREAT grasp on the foundational topics" WHAT THEY SAID. He has been so helpful for me to understand OCHEM2 after my OCHEM1 professor was not very helpful. If you put in the work he will guide you well.
Difficult lecture format. Often goes on irrelevant tangents. Terrible class notes posted. Unclear on what needs to be known for the tests.
material is hard but his practice exams are super identical to the test, he tells you everything you need to know, if you know how to self study ez A, he also curves a crap ton
Dr. Waas is honestly caring and I found his lectures entertaining. Ochem can be difficult but he focuses on making sure you know the essentials but nothing extra. He is also good about clearly laying out what you need to know. Most of the time the practice exams were similar, but mechanism heavy. He curves pretty generously.
Exams are very similar to the practice exams, I always went in expecting something super difficult but it was never so bad. Definitely go to SI, OChem is hard anyhow. If you get a 75% avg on both HW and attendance they go in as a 100 total. He is very kind. To teach, he has accessible lecture notes but writes additional things in class. Great guy:)
Dr. Waas is a great professor! Ochem is a hard class, but it is doable. I took Dr. Waas for both CHEM 227 and 228. You will have to put in a lot of work outside of class! He posts his old exams as practice. Exams are all short answer- no multiple choice. He curves the exams if the average is below a 70! Don't skip class, he gives points for going!
People get bad professor mixed up with hard class. The class is simply a difficult class and people get upset when he does not spoon feed them every piece of information. He gives enough information inside of class to get an A on every test as long as you study correctly. He tries his best to help you in class or outside of class as long as you ask
Good professor. He really tries to help you and provides everything that you need for the tests. He holds reviews for each of his tests and constantly recommends where you can find additional information. Everything is laid out for you, just sometimes you have to search for it. His youtube channel is super helpful, and I highly recommend using it.
Fav prof at A&M. Always clearly explains everything expected of us, provides organized/helpful notes to follow along in lecture, and practice exams nearly identical to real exams. Honestly asks for bare minimum, curves a lot, I think anyone who does poorly in his class simply isn't trying at all, o chem's hard you have to care enough to try.
Dr. Waas is genuinely a sweet person, and cares a lot about his students. O-chem is a hard class and will require outside practice regardless of your professor. He responds to questions well and makes sure he's explained it in a way that helps you if you ask. He has office hours, and I would recommend SI as well. Practice exams and homework help.
I don't think he was the issue when it came to why I didn't like this class. Starting studying ahead of time and make sure you are good with all the material and you'll be fine. His exams honestly weren't that bad and he curves by ~10 points every time
Waas is awesome! I went from a C in 227 to a 98 in 228 thanks to Waas. If you want a straight forward professor who tells you exactly what you need to know take Dr. Waas!
Dude, I loved his class. Uploaded previous years' lectures, is very clear about what will be on exams. Gives generous curves, he does comprehensive reviews before exam days. There is legit nothing to complain about. Sometimes tho u will have to look at the textbook for a few things he didn't cover in class, but that is a VERY SMALL portion.
Great guy. This is 2nd class I've taken with him. My grade is a reflection of how hard this class was and me not understanding it. But he truly does everything he can to help his students. He posts his lectures on Youtube. The practice exams were pretty helpful. He's a great teacher and will make you love this awful awful class.
Dr. Waas is honestly such an amazing prof and I hope to get him again next semester. He really cares about his students and is accessible outside of class. He does not cover every little thing in lecture, so be prepared to read or skim the book. His practice exams + video reviews really really help for the actual exam.
Waas is very good at teaching the material considering OChem is just a difficult course. He is very caring and always makes himself available. He does reviews a couple days before exams and curves heavy if he feels it's needed. Homework due on Aktiv weekly actually does help with the material. You just have to want to know it to do good in class.
Our class averages were usually 10 pts higher than other profs. His practice tests prepare you well. He genuinely wants us to succeed and is generous with extra points. 80% and above on AKTIV or attendance goes in as a 100% at the end of the semester. Normally there is 165ish points available on tests but they are only out of 150 so theres bonus.
The man is amazing his reviews are super helpful in terms of concepts and making sure you know what you need to know. Our class averages were way higher than any of the other professors partly because of the generous extra credit on exams but also because he doesn't trick you, tests that you know the material well and if you study you're golden.
show up to class and do the hw. always helps on office hours w the hw too. covers the material with lots of examples
uh oh he was not so good. it was not great because in theory I was paying to take this class and learn for my degree but in reality I learned from Ali at a plus. so oopsies but he was also sort of precious so there's that
I took Collins for Ochem 1 and this class was a breeze in comparison. Tests were extremely straightforward and he posts practice exams that are very helpful for the exams. There is one homework a week that took me less than an hour to do. Every time I asked him questions, he was pretty helpful. Overall great and relatively easy ochem prof.
Professor Waas is not a great lecturer, and his notes are not helpful most of the time. I mainly relied on practice problems, but when I did not understand something I would have to spend a lot of time googling it. I wish that his notes were more in-depth and that he would spend more time making them so, than providing a mediocre exam review.
The best organic prof I have ever had. If you struggle, please take him because he is SO straightforward in everything he teaches. I went from getting 50s-60s on exams to consistent 100s because of the way he does notes. Incredibly organized just not great handwriting. If you want an A in orgo, take him, just trust me. EC on ALL exams and a curve.
Dr Waas was pretty good at making orgo II pretty clear and straight to the point when it comes to teaching the material. However, you HAVE TO PRACTICE THE REACTIONS. Honestly the big reason I didn't get the grade I wanted was because I didn't practice enough. Getting an A is his class is very doable, but you have to put in the work.
I typically don't write reviews, but felt I had to for Dr. Waas. I went from not really understanding organic chem in CHEM227 to getting an A in Dr. Waas' class. His notes are the most clear I have ever seen. The mechanisms are extremely clear and he explicitly tells you what you do need to know and what you don't need to know. Super nice, too!
Dr. Waas was a great OCHEM professor who wanted his students to succeed. His lectures were easy to follow and his expectations for the exam material were outlined very clearly. He gives a lot of extra credit on exams and curves if needed. However, to do well in this course, it is important to be on top of the material and practice.
He is probably a nice person, but he is not organized and expectations for class or not clear. He does give attitude when answering questions, and it is not helpful for class.
OCHEM 2 is hard, but Waas was a great professor. He offers access to many different resources, he makes his own notes from the text book, and then writes additional notes as he lectures. His notes have visuals as well and he offers practice problems. He is very polite and you can tell he enjoys teaching. All of my tests so far have received a curve
Waas is overall a horrid prof and I don't think I learned anything from him directly, rambles in lecture about his cats for 30 mins then spends 45 seconds on a 5 step mechanism. What will be on the exams is extremely clear and very easy to cram for them. Good grade, yes, learning anything, not really. Have to take it into your own hands forsure.
People complain that he is unorganized but you can tell he does everything he can to help his students and wants to see success. He reformatted our notes into a more digestible form which helped a lot in my opinion. He clearly outlines what is needed to study for exams and he never tries to throw in trick questions. I would recommend him 100%.
Professor Waas offers clear lectures and outlines expectations well. To ace this class, consistent practice is key. For study prep, Unstuckstudy and the textbook were super helpful.
I've never had a professor that cares so much for his students. I always found him really funny and his lectures entertaining. He is so passionate about OChem and is willing to help you, go to office hours. He curves fairly on exams and the final. Always extra points embedded in the exams too.
Gets a decent amount of hate for no reason. He is a super fun prof & I honestly thought the class was pretty easy! He makes the content for exams clearly known & is super good about posting review videos & exam reviews.
i LOVED waas. got 108% on first two exams with the median being in the 90s. he makes it extremely clear what you need to know for the exams, like mechanisms etc. has practice tests and worksheets for each chapter that are super helpful for the exam in terms of formatting. makes lectures clear for the most part, you will do great in his class!
Dr Waas is a very fun professor, class is very engaging and TBH I am not a chemistry person but I really enjoy going to class! Exams are fairly easy and not much homework to worry about. Very manageable class, definitely recommend this prof!
Makes it clear what he expects you to know, but crams A LOT of content into the lecture. Had 5 midterms and a final. He covered 9 more chapters than other ochem profs. His tests aren't that hard, and you can get bonus points. Our first 2 exams had an average over a 90. I do recommend him, but get ready to have an exam practically every 2 weeks.
5 exams and cumulative final exam. Waas is OVERLY clear and very repetitive, so much that I stoped listening. I did A+ tutoring & did great. You have to go to class bc he takes attendance on Aktiv. Clear notes and gives practice sheets and exams before each test. Exams were fair. 108 or 109 points on exam and he takes grade out of 100.
ACTUALLY the goat. 5 exams and a cumulative final, which sounds like a lot, but the exams are easier because there's only three chapters on each one and his exams are EXACTLY like his practice exams. attendance is graded, but his lectures are fun so it's not a drag to go to class anyway. his office hours are helpful, and he's just a nice guy.
i loved dr waas! he was extremely clear for what we needed to know on exams and had averages in the 90s for the first two exams. 5 exams and a cumulative final, which sounds like a lot but tbh i preferred it because there was less content to study for each exam. do the aktiv assignments, chapter worksheets, and practice exams and you will do great!
Super clear about what's on the exams. Go to class (attendance matters), and do his worksheets and practice exams — they're basically the real test. 5 exams and a final, but each exam covers like 2-3 chapters. He's kind, understanding, and has the best grade distribution for OCHEM 2. Take him!
Waas was a very good professor that really has a passion for organic chemistry. He can be awkward at times or talk about stuff that isnt important at time but he tells you what you need to know on exams. Lectures are organized and has weekly aktiv homework but fairly easy. He has has 5 exams+final but it helps to lighten the load on exams.
Chemistry has never been my strong suit, however professor Waas made it very clear what was to be expected on exams and gave us plenty of study material.
Honestly, very underrated prof. He is very clear about class expectations and grading. Offers no extra credit but exams are very straightforward and are sourced from lecture slides and practice exams (even though he says they aren't). His lecture slides are amazing so read them throughly outside of class. Very nice and passionate prof for ochem.
Dr. Waas is hands down one of my favorite professors at Texas A&M. He is very clear on what he expects you to know and will never test you on a concept you have not seen. There are five midterms and a final, but they are all very reasonable. More complex than 257, but Waas makes it a very doable class.
He's a very good professor and prepares you well for future chemistry courses, namely biochemistry, and makes his expectations known for grading and abides by the syllabus like it's the bible. He's very available via office hours and by email. There were 5 midterm exams + the final so it was easy to recover if you bombed one.
Dr. Waas' lectures consisted of drawing and writing out a verbally spoken lecture. This may be hard to follow for some, but this was more than made up in the comprehensive typed notes he provided. Wass' exams were appropriately challenging without being antagonistic, and he offered plenty of extra credit opportunities.
i loved dr. waas! his exams were exactly like his practice exams and worksheets, so as long as you do the work, it's an easy A. ochem is a difficult class no matter who you take it with, but he makes it as engaging and easy as possible :)
Dr. Waas has been one of the best professors I've had. He maintains transparency with students and always works with us to make ochem as enjoyable and stress free as possible. All of his tests have extra credit, and he curves if everyone still did bad. Take him for ochem 2!!!
Dr Waas is an excellent professor. All his exams are completely fair and everything is gone over in lecture. Additionally the chapter worksheets and reviews he provides are incredibly helpful for studying for exams. His office hours were right after lecture so he would let students walk with him to his office after class. Ochem is tough regardless.
For those of you nervous to take this class, this professor made ochem 2 so much easier than ochem 1. All of his notes are in his slides and he posts lots of practice worksheets and practice exams that are literally so similar to the exams. There are 5 lecture exams and 1 final, but the material is a lot shorter and easier to work with!
