Go to class!! They are def worth it. The tests are open book but you also watch movies in class that are not only interesting but appear on the test in forms of questions. Movies include: The English Pacient and Deer Hunter.Topics include love and war..
He is a twit, he has no clue to what he is doing , and most of the time we would spend 15 mins while he figyred out how to use the class rooms media resources... Not to mention the fact that his tests are unfair, and he teaches soley his view point...

Ekk, he was far more focused on war then on love, and i really didn't get any kind of nature of story out of the class. but you need to sit thru class b/c otherwise you might miss stuff on the tests!
a rather boring class. we went over everything about writing, starting with the most basic--appropriate use of a semicolon. If you have prior knowledge of the english language, you may find yourself oddly offended by the class.
My favorite Jack Wilson memories: Him telling us about his affairs with a Russian, and him talking about making his children jump off a counter so that they could learn not to trust others (he didn't catch them). He's psycho... but a fairly easy class.
He is a very good professor, he keeps his classes on track while still keeping things interesting. I enjoyed attending the classes and learned quite a bit.
Nice guy, much more open to the idea that Christianity isn't the way, and educated about it. Taught well, one of the nicer profs.
Wilson is a legend in his own mind, and he'll let you know it. The class was really all about him. Luckily, that made it easy due to the lack of real course material. I barely attended and aced.
This guy is crazy. He tells us how he has been reincarnated 8 times and what he was in his previous lives, and he says it seriously. The classes are actually interesting sometimes, but his tests are ****.

I don't know why so many people dislike Wilson. I enjoyed the analytic writing course I took with him, and although he gives biased paper topics in his religious literature course I still learned quite a bit. He isn't a prof that will hold your hand, you get the end result of the effort you put in.
the class is easy to attend, you can use your notes and book for the two tests that he gives. the tests are ok if you did the reading that he assigns on webct. i did like his lectures. he kept them interesting. overall, good guy.
Lectures are okay. "Quizzes" can be a little tough, but you can use book and notes b/c it is online. Guest lecturers most entertaining of the lectures. Don't really take any notes in class. Everything is online on WebCT. Not a fan of the class, but pretty easy.

Professor Wilson is one of the best professors I have had at UM, if a little vauge. The ENG 131 class is EXTREMELY easy given you attended class and did the readings on WebCt. There were only two tests, both of which were easy. Overally enjoyable class and great GPA booster if you need one.
He is a tough grader to motivate you, but in the end, if you put in the effort, you'll get the grade. He has high expectations but really helps you to achieve them, and shows you techniques on how to be a better writer.
I WAS interested in the course and enjoyed the readings and some of his lectures. He tends to drone on and on. If you need any guidance, forget it. Assignments are very unclear and you'll graduate before he answers your question. My advise, find another class besides Wilsons.
Class was too confusing. Seemed he couldn't make up his mind, no syllabus and no answers to questions. Tends to ramble on but never actually answers what you asked. Won't explain his grading policy.
Class discussions and speakers were very interesting, although when it came time for the "quizzes" the questions seemed to be from out of no where. I don't know if I would take this class again if I had the option.
I took a couple different classes with Wilson and I enjoyed both of them very much. His class on Middle Eastern Literature made me actually start enjoying church.
I loved this class!!!! Nature of Story.. I think he is a great professor that tries many different venues to get to his students.. I think he's funny, and his tests were ONLINE and easy if you actually went to class.. I had a lot of fun in his class and I would reccommend his Nature of Story class to anyone

Gave me an D- on one of my papers because he didn't agree with my topic choice at all....very liberal....if he doesn't like your conservative views he will give you bad grades.
I had no idea what the hell was going on in class. He didnt specificly assign readings so i had to basicly guess at what to read. His quizes are terrible. Not only that but dude is a nut. Do yourself a favor and take whelan.
if he is anything like he was as my nature of story teacher, its true he's NEVER EVER clear on reading and the quizzes require lots of reading so if you dont read b/c u never know when2 your screwed! Even his homeworks are never explained everyone was always confused. If you want good grades not the class for u, if u wanna be entertained it is
The best thing about Mr. Wilson is he doesn't care about graded material, more about your class discussion. I asked for extra credit and he gave it to me. You have to be responsible and read the material before class, he doesn't assign page numbers. Tests are online so you can use google to find most answers.

He was the worst professor I've ever had. He was very unclear, I never knew what we were supposed to read or when assignments were due. The quizes were rediculous. I went to every class and when I took the quizes I knew nothing. He not only never responded to emails, he never read them. Not to mention he is rude and disrespectful to the students.
Very fun class, easy, quizzes are easy... test aren't terrible, do the reading before the test (even skim it) and you'll do fine. Watch a few movies, it's pretty much what half the tests are over! Def. take it 131 with Wilson!

the man rattles on and on about insignificant unimportant stuff. he speaks about his life examples and we are left to wonder whether he is simply insane or just plain abusive. He is chauvanistic and from his rattlings on has the appearance of someone who lacks basic intelligence. AVOID HIS CLASS "NATURE OF STORY" AT ALL COST!!!!
I had a terrible time taking notes for this class. It wasnt a bad class, I guess I just need more structure than he offers.
Not helpful and very disorganized. Took this class online and he still has his tests scheduled for a certain day at an exact time. He makes his own textbook but it isn't put together well. Online he has multiple Web CT sites so you have to go back and forth to find what you need. Class isn't hard but is extremely irritating!
This class is a chill class, it's in the DPC and you get to sit in the stadium like seating with Bose audio system and projector. The class itself is very easy BUT...what makes it difficult is WEBCT and that none of the course work it explained at all. Jack Wilson is the man though (interesting). Don't expect to get any of your emails answered.
Nature of A Story. What a joke. No one would have never even shown up if it wasnt that we had to "click in" at the beginning and end of every class. He's extremely disorganized and rather disgusting. He tells graffic stories that are inappropriate and disgusting. However, you won't fail. Only one person has. Ever.

As a prof., one of the worse. The class has little or no structure, strange material used by him, a stupid self-written over-priced textbook which is basically a public-domain anthology he slapped together out of loose-leaf hole punched paper! Definitely a **** and expresses his views, as such, as "scientific fact."

I got an A and still have no idea what the class was about. This is the most boring class I have ever had. I took the class because it covers so many gen. education requirements, but seriously is not worth it. Avoid this teacher like the plague.
Great class, wonderful professor. He challenges people's beliefs but is very respectful at the same time. He's also hilarious.
This class is HORRIBLE. We are 1/2way through, and Wilson has answered only one of my e-mails and he was incredibly rude. His assignments are completely unclear, and when you take the test, you realize he is testing over material that he never even assigned. It is frustrating and worthless.
AWFUL class.. Occasionally the classes are interesting, however they are typically horribly boring. Don't believe it when people say it is an easy A, he asks questions over material he hasn't even assigned. Overall this class is rediculous, and I DO NOT reccomend taking it

It's so random - one day we listen to country music, the next we watch a movie - and it just didn't tie in. It was a waste of money. I heard this course with another professor is great. Don't take it with him.
Kooky, but nice. Advanced comp was tough, but it's advanced...not easy. Worked very hard to make me a better writer, was always willing to read a draft, and helped a lot in the creative process. Also, took examples from your own writing to show mistakes, or good things. I learned a lot, even if I still don't like to write much.

during this class i learned that sex is good, war is bad, and google can let you not pay attention at all in the class and still ace the final. The only thing i truly improved on in this class is raft wars, tetris, and facebooking. it is horribly boring and the professor is barley a professor at all. waste of life and money.
This class was absolutly pointless. Nothing that Prof. Wilson ever said had any meaning, he just liked to tell really disurbing stories. The technology never worked correctly this was my first and worst class ever at UMaine. I would not recommend this class to anyone. And don't be fooled not an easy class, you WILL GET SCREWED!

Do not take ENG 131 with Wilson. The book costs $125 and it is worthless after the class (he writes a new one every year) Plus your now required to buy a 'clicker' for $30-60. People need to get a grip the class may have been stupid or worthless but honestly I went to class and took the test and got an A. Whoever got bad grades obviously cannot just go to class, that is ALL one had to do. The final is online how easy does it get.

I took this class online and it was BY FAR my worst experience at UMaine. Wilson did not have anything in order. I felt bad for the TA; she knew just as little as to what was expected. The English Department needs to consider the continuation of his employment. Do not take this class if you can help it. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE
I have heard from a ton of other students he is horrible. It's been my experience that MOST UMaine Professors can't teach, are unwilling to be objective, and seem to have emotional problems as well as problems with substance abuse. I've dropped out of UMaine. I would like to go back but am having second thoughts about attendding UMaine Orono.
Wilson holds grudges. If you agree with his point of view, which can at times be extreme, you're fine. If not, be prepared for head butting.
I really can't see where the complaints come in. He's been exceptionally helpful and he really knows his material. He may be a bit off in left field, but he generally has good intentions. I can't say how he is in "The Nature of Story", but I think he gets to be a lot better in higher-level classes. I'd recommend ENG 435 with him.

This class is amazing. I enjoyed his lectures and the readings were chosen well. The material and his prompts really make you think. Hard time getting him to respond to emails, but when he passes back grades they come with a sound clip with his comments. Very good class, highly recommended!
I thought Jack was very into his subjects. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and his life stories (though usually off topic) with his class. He talks to you, not at you, and encourages opposing views. I really enjoyed his classes.
Worst class that I have taken in college. Should be called the Nature of Jack Wilson. Doesn't make much sense, writes the book himself (and it's expensive). Not helpful outside of class, does not apply to anything in real life. I went into this class with an open mind and left really despising him.

Instead of returning my emails or attempting to locate my iclicker number in the database, he ignored the majority of messages I sent him and failed me, even though I had not missed more than 3 classes and completed all other assignments.
If you want to take an interesting class and have good class discussions than this is the class. I had a blast in the class and it doesn't seem hard to get an A. Most of the time he requires books that you never end up reading and his research papers are graded on the high side. He has quirky life stories and experiences, but it makes it fun.
This professor uses the topic of sex way to much. It leaves for awkward class discussions. If you want to get an uncomfortable, easy A then go for it.
Professor Wilson forces students to purchase his custom edition textbook raking in royalties in the process. Buy the custom access code directly through Cengage (it's $30 dollars.) This course you will always remember... you will never forget wasting your tuition money on a useless class!
Great professor, very knowledgeable. Very easy A in this course. Attendance is a must but thats pretty much it. No tests, no quizzes, no homework. It is a easy class but you also get a lot out of it, due to his skill as a speaker.
