You couldn't ask for a better biology instructor. Made the class fun and interesting and always very helpful.
Jackie is really nice, and seems to care about students. Exams reflect material from course. Pleasant experience.
HORIBLE is all I can say she is A BAD prof
i liked jackie she is alot clearier then most profs. hard to find her for office hours but if you email her you can get your answers.
She's really good and easy going, but you must be prepared to write a LOT of notes. She goes super fast. But if you are willing to bring of hunkin text to class, the notes are straight from there usually. She's fair and her material reflects the exam.
She's awesome. Very helpfull. Short answer part of the final exam is usually easy.
Nice teacher, must learn to write fast legdible notes. overall pleasent
Very helpful and she was interesting to listen to. Her test are not to bad and she prepares you for the lab final lots
really good prof. interesting and loves the material which makes things easier. she knows her stuff.
Awesome bio teacher knows what she's talking about! Very fair!
Not impressed It was her first time teaching Bio 101,very unprepared for the lectures, made no attempt to familiarize herself with the textbook & powerpoint presentations, says one thing, does another, extremely hard to contact for out of class help, doesn't return emails.I would NEVER take a class from her again nor would I recommend her to anyone
She talks on and on before starting the lab--hardly any time left to finish the actual lab itself sometimes. I was dissappointed with a grade assigned on the second lab quiz and she did not even attempt to reply to my e-mail. Makes things quite confusing.
Clear, concise, excellent examples and explanations.
She is very passionate about the field, which makes her lectures much more interesting and interactive.
Nice person, but confused about material, and puts little effort into the class.
This is the most disorganized teacher I've ever had in my life. I couldn't believe how unprepared she was time after time. I would definately try to avoid having her as a prof.
Notes are absolutley horrid. Unclear on what is expected to be known.
Jackie goes through her lecture notes really fast, so it's better to bring the textbook and highlight what are on her notes. If you ask her to get a copy of her notes, she'll just say to read the textbook. However, if you miss a class, she'll give you her notes that she missed. She's great as a lab instructor.
I liked jackie, she seems like she enjoys her work. Her notes are pretty intense but if you can keep up its makes it alot easier to study(very straight forward). Shes a bit of a scatter brain but it didnt really bother me like it did other students.:)
Had her for lecture as well as lab. Her field is in Molecular Biology with a special focus on Oncology, and she'll weave this into her presentations constantly. One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Tests are fair, notes are clear and she prepares you well for the exams. Highly recommend her for introductory Biology.
Very interesting prof - relates nearly everything to her cancer/diabetes research. Note-taking is nearly impossible if you want to catch everything though - I recommend bringing the text and highlighting from there (her notes are usually straight from the text). Exams are deceivingly hard - very unexpected.
Jackie makes fair exams, based on her notes. Read the textbook and you'll do fine.
Notes are straight from the text so bring your book to class and just highlight her words. Can get a little off topic sometimes but that's because of how much she loves bio. Tests can be hard although I found the final to be considerably easier than the midterm. And make sure you see her during office hours; she loves you do! I've had worse profs.
She actually told us that since our average was to high that she was going to make the final extremely hard. The most pessimistic person I have ever met and basically wants you to do badly in her class...not cool. Teachers are there to help you through college and help you get where you want to go in life
She teaches right out of the textbook, so you can skip a lot and still keep up, as long as you read it on your own time. Not a lot of assignments, the grades fall almost entirely on the midterm and final. Study hard, those babies are difficult!
Kinda what I like to call a "bio snob". On the first day of class told us its a hard course and she'd be surprised if we get an A. But then contradicting cuz she would ask a lot of questions in a way like "Come on you don't know this- DUH?!?" Not a positive prof., quite negative towards her students-Come to class everyday and you'll be fine.
She was the best lab instructor I ever had. She was totally overqualified to be teaching Biology 107 at a college, her knowledge of the material was extensive. She was always willing to explain a concept but usually she was very clear and thorough in explaining everything. Better than any lab instructor you'd at the U of A (ALL noob grad students)!
Jackie was an awesome lab instructor. After going to the review classes given by the other profs, I was so glad she was my prof. Great background notes before the labs, very helpful, sometimes late, very knowledgeable. Definitely a keeper.
I thought she was useless! She doesn't answer your questions, she makes so many mistakes on exams, and it really doesn't seem like she knows anything about nutrition. It sucks because her lectures are word for word from the textbook but you still have to go to class because she'll say one or two things that you need to know for the exam. Stay away!
clear, effective, helpful, like what I learned, good looking
You should definitely take her lab. She is so helpful. All the contents from the lectures you can find them from the textbook. Read the book then you will be fine.
Jackie was both my lab and lecture instructor. Notes are a bit rushed, but she'll let you know whats important. Going to class helps and she's very interesting and brings in her cancer research background alot. If you need help, she'll do anything to get you the mark you need. Lab was awesome as well. Would DEFINITELY recommend
Excellent Prof. Very energetic and engaging.
Jackie always has energy except she has specific things she wants on exams and expects you to know everything. Really rushes through everything and gives you a overload of information. I do think shes really helpful if you ask for help. Overall..you need to put a lot of effort into her class. BTW i had her to labs only.
Well if you ask her for help she is completely useless... i asked to meet her on several occasions and she stood me up. When i emailed her about it she said we could meet at another time, i tried arranging that and she didn't get back to me until after our final was over, which was completely useless.. literally tried getting ahold of her for weeks
She likes her Bio 107 students a lot more that her 102's. Do not take her for 102. Stay awayyyyyyyyyy
She really knows her stuff and is interesting to watch her class, she's entertaining in the way she explains things, in a good way. The only downfall is that she doesnt put her notes on blackboard. But she's really really nice and helpful. I'd take her class again.
Had her for class and lab...she is very good at explaining and VERY clear in how she marks. She doesn't use blackboard and is hard to get ahold of as she is also studying business at UofA...attend every class and work hard on the assignments and you will be fine! READ THE TEXTBOOK
While she is a very kind person, I find her teaching comnpletely ineffective. She reads right from slides (which are right from the text) and asks the class redundant questions, and then acts shocked and offended when no one answers. These are mostly first year university student that are too shy to interact, and her style of teaching is useless.
amazing prof! extremely helpful and very nice! very passionate about her work and really loves being there for students!
Decent prof, pretty average.
A frustrating prof cuz she'll spend so much time talking in pre-lab that you sometimes don't get time to finish the lab (too detailed, can't generalize). Despite this she's VERY helpful with questions and is very smart. Take down her notes in pre-lab talk because all her explaining makes you really prepared for the lab final. Overall real good prof
I liked Jackie. Her notes did seem to be rushed, but like everyone said, out of the textbook. I hate carrying around that ten-pound wonder, so I didn't and was able to keep up. Her tests are difficult, and she didn't give us a lot to study from. She was really enthusiastic though, which was a nice change.
She is incredibly smart and loves Bio! Her quizes are difficult and you need to study a lot for them. She spends a lot of time on prelab lectures which at times seem very redundant but it will help you in the long run. If you take her notes and pay attention in class you'll be fine. She is pretty laid back and relatable.
Shes really nice, easy going and easy to talk to but really is unclear, instead of giving a concise answer to first year students she gives a convoluted or vague answer. Ask as many questions as you see fit; DON'T BE SHY.
I had Jackie for the BIOL 107 LAB component. I advise you to find someone else. As Jackie is a very nice easy going person, she NEVER STOPS TALKING AT THE BEGINNING OF A LAB. You will always be behind.Labs that she says you MIGHT get out early in you will NEVER actually get out early cause of her talking for half of the lab,ANNOYING. she marks hard
i had her for the lab. One time I made an APPOINTMENT to meet with her and go over an assignment. I waited outside her office for a half an hour and she didn't even show up. I've heard it has happened a lot before.. She marked the assignments so hard and didnt tell us how to even do it. ALSO, she talks way too much, I almost fall asleep every lab.
Exams are way to hard for a first year elective. Way to much effort for this class. If your looking for an easy A this is not the class for you.
Jackie is really nice, and super smart, but she's not very helpful with lab assignments (pretty much said 'try your best' and that was it). She rambles in too much detail during pre-lab talks, and you will never get to leave early because of this. She gives hard quizzes, but it was good preparation for the lab final. She's an okay lab prof.
Had her for lab portion of bio 107, she does talk a lot at the beginning but most of it is useful information. She is an excellent teacher, as long as you are listening you will learn something. Makes it clear what you should know for exams and is a fair marker.
Jackie rambles like crazy. She is very engaged with her students during the lectures, but I literally made my own notes from the textbook and never had to listen during class. She uses incredibly long powerpoints, but does talk through them relatively fast, so lectures aren't long. But yeah she just talks and talks and talks. About anything.
She was a good prof but the midterm was awful. It was so long and everything in the textbook that wasn't covered in class is fair game for exams. It was frustrating because there's a lot you need to know but you're mostly teaching yourself.
I didn't have to spend too much time for the lecture class, with only a midterm, an assignment and a final. The ppt notes tend to be a bit confusing. You really have to organize them to get rid of the unimportant parts, but all you need is there. The class itself has a lot of information so it can be a bit dry. Attendance is not mandatory.
Jackie is a super nice teacher, although she can get off topic regularly. Read the text and the lectures for tests and you'll do fine. Don't drop out at first, give it a few weeks to see, she grows on you.
Jackie is interesting to say the least. Maybe it's because my friend had her for a different course and really liked her and my expectations were too high, but I didn't personally enjoy her, she's too all over the place. But she helps when you need it and her exams are fair! Read the textbook and go over the lectures and you'll do fine.
Jackie knows a lot about science and as a result gets slightly too in depth on certain things, or tells you about stuff much more complicated than you NEED to know. Following along with the text book will help a lot, as her notes are not particularly organized. Tough exams, fair, but requires you to really understand know the material.
Really nice lady, good lectures. Hard midterm though .... 1 hour to do 50 multiple choice and written response sooo yea.. But I still like her though
Everything in the textbook is fair game so you might as well skip class, read the textbook and make study notes on your own. The in class slides are on blackboard. She told us on day 1 that if you are looking for an easy grade, this is not the class for you. It is more difficult than it seems. Interesting class and Jackie is very knowledgeable.
Horrible at explaining what she wants for the assignments, and seems to grade using no rubric at all. Exams were long, and tested on topics we did not go over in class. Her slides are useless, and seem to be copy and pasted from Wikipedia and other prof's work. If taking her class, skip the lectures and opt for the textbook instead.
If you don't want to work hard DON'T take this class. Professor Jackie Leithoff has very difficult exams. I was someone taking this class to boost up my GPA having a background in bio 30, but that didn't make it that much easier. Powerpoint's are not organized and she gets off topic very easily.
Firstly she doesn't respond to emails.. which I find unprofessional, her tests are hard and unfair. Gets off topic easily and I find her very rude. Would avoid this class :/
Her lectures were interesting, and she presented material clearly. My problem with her is her exams. She's an awesome professor if we focus solely on the lecture itself, but her exams did not at ALL reflect the material in the textbook/her lectures... Not to mention the abundance of irrelevant questions. My grades did NOT reflect how much I knew.
Jackie is very smart. I took bio 30 so I thought bio 101 would be a good step up and an interesting course. I found her lectures very long and dry. Her lectures and the text alone aren't enough for her tests. I felt like I could never know enough to to do well many irrelevant questions and way too much content for 50 minutes
Lectures were long and powerpoint notes were all over the place. Exams were difficult. Difficult to approach. Would not recommend if you were looking for an easy science credit.
While there are not that many tests.. more like just the midterm and final, her tests are hard. Her lectures are okay, her power points are simple, but keep up with the readings since she only points out general ideas on her power points so if you skip class, be sure you've done your readings to get what is going on in the power points.
Jackie is aaaalllll about cancer, cancer, cancer. Shes a cancer researcher and you WILL know (literally every lecture she talks about it). Her tests are hard, so be prepared! She rambles on and on and is all over the place too.
Unless you have taken many biology classes prior dont take this class. Biology 30 wont cut it. Her lectures were okay, but so irrelevant when it came to tests. I would never take her class again. The tests were not only irrelevant and hard but the amount of content she puts in them for a 50 minute test is unrealistic. Avoid
I wouldn't take this class again. She rambles a lot and the tests are way harder, and irrelevant, when compared to her lectures. She makes it very clear that you need an extensive background in biology to understand this course, even though it's an intro level.
Jackie is an adorable lady. She is very knowledgeable about the bio 102 content. Her tests are decently hard but if you pay attention you should have no problem.
Do not take her class, I am not being biased or anything at all, I actually did quite well in her class but i had to work my butt off to get an A-, her tests are super long and has nothing to do with what she teaches, the only reason I did good it's because I attended other BIO 107 classes to teach myself the material. AVOID AT ALL COSTS TRUST ME.
Jackie talked through most of our lab time leaving us little time to actually complete our labs. When I went to her for help she gave very unclear and poor answers. Her exams were average but her teaching was rough. Overall, she wasn't very friendly. Be sure to be very thorough in your lab reports she is a hard marker. But... she loves biology!
She's awesome! Really knowledgeable, very inspirational. Answers all the questions and isn't afraid to say she doesn't know something which is rare enough anyways. If I could, I'd take all my bio classes with her.
She's a nice person but did not like her as a prof. Her lectures are super cluttered and she often skips over stuff that you need to know. I suggest not studying from the lectures and teaching yourself from the textbook. Her tests are difficult and unclear, they have stuff we never talked about in class on them. 10/10 would not recommend.
GET OUT OF HER CLASS RN!!!!!!! Her exams are crazy hard and she is very unfair when marking the written portion. I would not take any courses with her, she comes off rude and uninterested and seemed very mad that the midterm average was high and told us not to expect an easy final! ONCE AGAIN, GET OUT IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR GPA!
somebody needs to fire her.... worst proff ive ever had , tests you on the smallest little details and marks very unfairly. would not recommend
Good teacher, will test your knowledge on quizzes but marks assignments fairly.
Dont take this class if you want a high GPA.
Worst prof I've ever had. Her exams are horrible. She tests on the most irrelevant content. Her midterms consisted of questions that she never even covered and don't even bother complaining cause she won't change it. Constantly says we need to have a strong bio history to understand the content even though its an INTRO class. AVOID HER!!!!
Hard to reach if you ever want to ask questions during office hours. Didn't go over lab questions in class so you aren't sure if you have the right concepts. Easy going, very easy marker. Nice lady. Overall, not sure if I would take her again, because she lacked on major things. Without a strong lecture teacher you will be confused in the course.
Jacqueline has clear expectations - there are no surprises with her! If you study her lecture notes, do her quizzes, & read the textbook you'll succeed. She is very easy to access via email and outside of class. I 've taken her for Bio 102 (online) and Bio 101 in class and would definitely take her again.
she is horrible, worst prof ive ever had, puts things in tests that she said would not be there, goes off on tangents all of the time, doesn't respond to emails, and if you try to set up an appointment with her theres a chance she won't even show up. Her slide are so outdated, they're from the early 2000's.
Jackie is a nice lady, but she's a bad lab prof. She would tell our bench to leave 45-60 mins early, which was nice, but we were never able to complete Part B. She would tell us they weren't for marks, but we ended up having to write a lab report on one of them. Her quizzes are hard & she gives you a vague description on what it's going to be on.
Mid-terms hard and based on textbook, not slides. Didn't teach half the content that was tested on the final. Unorganized and out-dated slides. Grades short answer ridiculously hard. Don't take her class unless if you want to succeed.
She's a nice person and very enthusiastic about her course. Her quizzes were hard, they had multiple choice section and written but not enough time. The midterms were easier. I would suggest to study her slides mostly and use the textbook if you don't understand. Some of the questions were unclear on the exams. The final was hard.
Jackie is extremely disorganized. For an intro bio class its super hard if you dont commit to memorizing the textbook! Avoid if possible.
I was not happy with her as a prof. She goes on tangents and talks about really specific stuff we will never be tested on, and then says she has to skim through topics because there isn't enough time to cover all the material. Going to her class is pretty much a waste of time. If you want to pass, you HAVE to make your own notes from the textbook.
Jackie's passionate about the material but spends time going through things like definitions. She ends up skimming through material because we run out of time in class. She gives hints on what you'll be tested on. Her online quizzes need to be done FAST because you don't get a lot of time. She says a 60-65% average is high. Hardest 100-level class!
Awful class, tests are extremely unreasonable and contained lots of irrelevant question to the course. Course content is not overly difficult, but she is unclear on what you need to know. Expect a C or B..
Very difficult exams! gets off topic, very distracted by her stories in class. You never know what to expect on the exams. She says you cant pass without reading the textbook. I dont Know who hired her tbh :)
The thing with Jackie is that she is super nicest her written response answers on the midterm and final are really unreasonable and forces you to be SUPER specific. She reads off slides so attendance isn't mandatory. She gets carried away so you have to end up teaching yourself some chapters. When a Prof says first class that a 68% is high, goodluc
She is very tough grader. Doesn't mark assignments properly. She doesn't even know how to explain things and if you will ask her questions in the lab she won't answer your question. Do not take Lab from her, it is my request to you Shes BIG NO NO. Don't ruin your GPA and health. I wish I could list down everything that she made me go through.
If I was to go back in time, I would not have taken Bio 102 just because I had to endure her painful class. Very tough grader and worst lectures/notes I have ever seen. Disappointed that the university has her teaching this course- first thing she tells us is that this class is going to drop our GPA. Pretty disrespectful to students, too.
Majority of the material on your final and midterms is barely covered in class. She actually teaches her lectures at a slow and boring pace and only reads off her slides so attendance is not mandatory. The notes on her slide and in the textbook don't give you enough information to help you with the specific and problem based questions on her exams.
MacEwan has great profs but she is not one of them. She is anal on academic integrity but if you don't use word by word what she says she marks it wrong- EVEN if it is the right answer, and then when you go to her, she says it's right but marked wrong since it's "not how she would put it". Stay away from her classes!!!
Oh my god, do not take her class!!!!!!!! She literally expects you to be the smartest, most amazing student in the entire world. She expects so much from you. Her grading is absolutely ridiculous for an introductory class where students are just LEARNING. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Ive never had a bad lab instructor but she was the first at MacEwan. Very rude and extremely hard at marking. She was not approachable at all and I felt like I was thrown in the deep end with no help at all. I would never have her again.
DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.... IM SAVING UR GPA!!!!!!
Jackie was perhaps one of the best professors I had. She is why I went into nutrition at UofA. She makes you work for it, but you are in university, so I'm not sure what you expect!! She's an excellent teacher.
Her quizzes and exams were extremely unfair in regards to the number of questions given and the amount of time provided. All questions were based on the textbook and even if you had answered a question correctly, she would mark it as incorrect because "it's not what she specifically wanted." DO NOT TAKE AS A GPA BOOSTER!
Nice lady, bad instructor. PowerPoints were out of date and cluttered with useless info. Textbook she uses is not good. Make sure you pay attention in class or else you'll be lost in her lectures, no structure at all.
