She really has no idea what she is doing and spends a lot of time in her lectures just being confused. Don't take classes from her--you will spend a lot of time trying to learn the stuff she didn't teach you.
During the first of the semester, she really quized and tested on stuff we hadn't even covered in that class. On a positive note, she allows you to review your exam, rework the problems, and go try and win points back. That helps a lot.
She is an awesome person and really entertaining, but not the best teacher. Lectures aren't great, but gives back points of the tests. 119 is a hard class, but TA's will help a lot. Go to the test reviews. I reccomend her.
I ended up having to teach myself. All she does in lecture is assume you know the material and do examples from the section. Poor teacher, the TAs saved my mathematic life. *the good news: but i've heard only good things about Wycoff.
Great person. Don't bother going to lecture. The material isnt hard, you just run through it really quick. Can drop 2quiz 2lab 1test. If you get 93+ on all tests you dont have to take the final. Do homework and have a general understanding for an A
I loved Jackie. People say that she tests on stuff that you don't know, but that's the thing, you're not supposed to take that class unless you know that stuff. You should take MATH 110 before if you are not so smart in math. This was my favorite class.
Nice, but not good at teaching. Always seemed to test on questions that were not covered very well. Maybe it is just that i felt like i learned everything in the class by myself and then took her test. Why even give us a teacher?
Took her class as a review course. Wow, finally a Math teacher who teaches in English! She teaches step by step & you don't feel stupid asking what others might consider a ridiculous question. I'd take her for any math class again!
Jackie doesnt do a good job of helping students understand what they are trying to accomplish in specific problems. She can also be rather arrogant and cocky. She often portrays herself as a benevolent person- she reminds me of Comadus in "Gladiator"; "Am I Not Merciful?!
Jackie was awesome! The class was challenging, but she is miles ahead of any of the other Math 119 teachers. She lets you get points back on the tests, rework problems and more. She doesn't tolerate people who don't pay attention. She can also be sarcastic, which makes the class fun!
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. If you stick with it, it gets better. I hadn't taken math for 6 years so it was tuff. Also the math lab is very hot!
She goes through examples in class, doesn't waste your time. Best class for self-motivated learners. She wants students to do well and is very understanding as long as you are putting in the effort. If class isn't enough, the TA lab covers any other needs you might have.
She goes very fast and doesn't really take the time to help you. She's pretty good at teaching the material but usually she leaves the students pretty confused. Cares about us but doesn't seem to help that much
I'll put it this way: the only people getting As are those who just finished precalc in high school (which is essentially the same thing as college algebra) or have already taken Math 119 and are repeating this class for the grade. If you know the material and just want a better grade, go for it. Don't take it if you actually want to learn.
SHE DID PROBLEMS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOOK SO LECTURE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO HELP AT ALL. I ENDED UP NOT GOING AND JUST HEADING TO THE LAB TO DO THE HOMEWORK ON MY OWN. SHE DID OFFER SOME WAYS TO MAKE UP CREDIT ON TESTS THAT YOU DID POORLY ON BUT HER TEACHING LEFT A LOT TO BE DESIRED
Worst teacher at BYU. She called students stupid, and would yell at you for asking a question. She has something against guys. It was an easy A, but I hated every moment of her class. She seemed like she didnt want to be there, and somethimes she didn't know the material she was teaching.
I went to one day of math 097 and she just jotted everything on the board and left me confused, i dropped the class afterwards but that left me with a bitter experience of college math but since then I have taken two math classes and aced them. Don't take her
I don't like math, but this class was pretty good. She always had a few jokes during class and made math much more interesting. She went fast but it was alright because she explained things well.
I'll give it to you straight! I had to work my butt off in this class. It is by no means an easy A, but Jackie is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I think the people who are bagging on her just got their panties in a bunch because they would not spend the time to get the grade they wanted. She makes class interesting and teaches well.
Jakie is the greatest teacher! She is so fun and is truly interested in how her students do. It is a very time consuming class but you get to drop your lowest test grade and after every test you can review your answers with her and you always get more points back. Plus you don't have to take the final if you get A's on all the tests!
Jackie is a great teacher! I know she does her lectures straight from the book but for those of us who can't read math books, it's great! I hadn't taken math in 4 years, and it was hard at first, but if you work hard it pays off! She is also way funny, makes class interesting!
If you want to have a hard and difficult year, take this class. The teacher does not explain things well AT ALL and is usually late due to her service in the Math Lab. The lectures are not helpful (she relies heavily on the Math Lab) and there is way too much busy work. This class is only for the brave.
I'm not going to lie, this class requires a lot of work. But that's what to expect out of a 4 credit class. If you are self motivated, this class is perfect for you, if not, then you'll just get frustrated and start blaming Jackie for your own laziness. When that happens, just ask yourself, "Now what is the purpose of college?"
Jackie is terrible. When I went to class I could only understand her teaching because I could see past her simple math errors. I didn't attend class for the second half of the semester and did better on the tests teaching myself. She has no interest in helping the individual student just saving face when she screws up. Class is great, not from her.
Jackie is a horrible, horrible teacher. Her lectures hardly help and there is a lot of work involved. Unless you love math and your pretty good at it dont take this class. She does let you review your test and get some points back however, but it doesnt help much unless your borderline A. Her tests are ridiculous and SHE IS NOT FUNNY!
The class is definately hard, but if you put enough effort into it, it is doable to get an A. Jackie is great. In class she does problems similar to the homework. Test are hard, but she gives back points from your scratch paper. This is the most structured and fair graded class I have ever taken.
Jackie is a wonderful and awesome teacher. Although she has like 400 students, she will meet with you if you want. Now that's sweet. You can drop one test and only two of the six test are hard so if you put forth the effort, it's easy to get a B or above. It's easy to get partial points back on tests. I recommend her.
horrible teacher, horrible class. i went to almost every class but fell asleep. she's not as funny as she thinks. Do the labs in a group and you'll get A's. The tests however are IMPOSSIBLE!! you get there and wonder where these problems came from. I did horrible. get another teacher
Jackie made a very difficult subject bearable. Her humor is light hearted; she doesn't say things to make offense. Exams are challenging, but you can go back and fix mistakes for points. You will have to set up a little tent in the math lab. Pack a lunch and bring a flashlight. I'd be happy if my wife were that age and still looked like that.
NOT a hard class if you know the tricks - meaning: Go to the Math Lab, be friendly enough to get a group together to work through problems there, get points back on tests, USE the answer key to check homework problems, and MOST importantly.. look over all homework problems and MEMORIZE them. She wanted students to get good grades and was so kind.
I thought class from Jackie was awesome. You just have to understand how the class works. All the test problems come from the book which is really nice and in class she works even numbered problems which are often problems you'll find on assignments. She also gives you credit for missed problems on tests if you show your work.
Jackie is a really great person. She really knows her stuff, but she takes so much time in class cracking jokes and talking about irrelevant things that you just want to go. Go to the math lab, and go a lot. Work with others on the labs, and you'll get A's on them. Get partial credit on exams! Get over a 93 on all tests, don't have to take thefinal
Jackie thinks she is the "math god" of BYU campus. She wants to help students but always seems condescending and rude instead. The course itself wasn't too bad though. As long as you go over the homework before tests, and get your TA to help you out, you can easily get an A.
This class is incredibly easy if you dedicate lots of time to it. I hadn't taken math in 8 years, but I still got an A. Jackie makes what she expects of each student very clear. Her test questions come right out of the homework, so there's nothing on her tests that you haven't already seen.
the test are multiple choice but there are like 8 choices and they are choices that are common mistakes students make.the weekly quizzes weren't bad if you did th homework. the homework helps give easy points but i spent a lot of time in the math lab even though i had already taken calc in hs-she is confussing with her teaching
Jackie is horrible. She goes over the problem in the book the whole time in class. If you ask a question she tells you to refer to the book. It's pointless to go to class! She sucks!
I love Jackie! She was so helpful in class, and did all she could to help you learn the materials. She even allowed you to go back over the tests and get points back from the problems you got wrong! She was easy to understand in lecture, and very entertaining. I would reccomend her to anyone.
Worst math teacher on campus, and rightly so. She is always late for class, disorganized, and even with a second chance on her exams she doesn't teach well enough for a third of the class to improve their grade. Only take from her if you have taken calc before.
Very helpful. Gives students opportunuties to redeem bad test problems. Gives generous partial credit which is really important in Calculus! Skipping the final is the bomb diggity.
Look out! The absolute most inportant thing that I can tell you to do is to stay on top of your homework. I hadn't taken math in two years and it has come back to bite me in the butt! She is extremely vague and will stop to explain herself but all she does is reiterate what she just said. I had to take her because of scheduling conflicts.
This class is not too hard if you have taken calc before. She isn't the best teacher of certain concepts as she has her secretary write her notes everyday. She just does practice problems on the board so if you skipped lecture big deal. She does let you get points back on tests which is helpful.
she was ok, but the LAB was there to help... her tests also made the class easy.
She makes you feel stupid when you ask a question
Jackie is probably the best teacher for 119. She allows you to rework test problems to get points back. I doubt I would have gotten such a high grade with a less understanding and helpful teacher. She can get a little distracted with problems on the board but she's helpful. If you aren't a Wiz in Calculus yet then she will help you learn it best.
Her teaching style didnt match my way of learning. I would have to teach myself everything to do for my homework and labs. I stopped going to class all together half way through because the lectures didnt help me. Its not a hard class but be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class. She is very generous with giving test points back.
works very well with the students. makes class pretty fun and interesting. is concerned for students and wants them to do well...works with them so they can do the best possible.
She was really nice and really interested in helping her students out. I flunked two of her exams and still got a really good grade. She was always willing to discuss problems and in class she made sure you understood the problems. i liked her alot.
Jackie does a poor job of teaching and explaining concepts BUT the course set-up is really nice! All the questions in the test are from the book; if you get A in all the mid-terms you don't need to take the final. So if you are a self-learner and/or good at maths take this class from her.
Jackie does a really poor job of explaining the concepts, but this course is set up so you can teach yourself. The online homework takes you through each step of a problem which is wonderful. Also, the study guides are right on, so in the end, I quit going to class but pulled an A anyways.
Jackie is fabulous! She's really funny and let us out early half the time. If you pay attention and do your work then the class is easy. She gives lots of opportunities to get points back, too.
Jackie did not teach at all, did not explain concepts to students clarity, i had to learn with a group of friends, the only thing we liked about jackie was that we could retake the midterms in the math lab with help so we could credit and boost our grades.
Jackie was great. A lot of students complained during class about her teaching style but it always seemed to be the younger students who wanted someone to hold their hand. The course was set up well and Jackie is over-accomodating, which is great. She does seem overly concerned with people talking in class though.
I really liked her teaching. How could people not follow? If anything, I felt she was a little too basic sometimes in her explanations. Anyway, I can't imagine not doing well if you do the homework. And you get points back on the tests if you go back for help after a poor score. I highly recommend taking her for Calculus.
This woman is ridiculous. I spent the first weeks caring what she said in class, but after realizing that the students knew more than she did, stopped going to class. Work is redundant. She makes you do homework online, and on paper, quizzes online, and in the testing center.
I don't understand why Jackie is teaching at a university. I stopped going to class half way and have done better without her confusing explanations. The TA's are awesome, but she herself is quite a poor teacher. I learned from the textbook and classmates. Business majors have to take MATH 119, but don't take Jackie! Avoid her at all costs!
Jackie is a great person, and an okay teacher. The class goes fast, but that's just the way it has to be, since there's so much material to cover. She gives you points back on your tests if you rework them, and as long as you do the homework and study, you'll be fine. She's really nice and makes jokes in class, which makes it fun.
Jackie is the coolest teacher that I had, the class is very hard and you should plan on spending lots of time Math lab for extra help, i was in night class and she let us out early most of the time, great lady hard class
Its not Jackies Fault its the departments. You don't have to go to class which is nice, but plan on being in the math lab for forever. She gives great curves at the end of the year, so if you think that your failing you probably have a B. Hardest Class ive taken but no matter who you take it from the tests are all the same.
Jackie tries hard to take care of all her students, if you respect her, she will respect and help you. She's fun approachable, she gets a bad rap becuase students either don't like math, or haven't taken a tougher class and BYU and think it's just her. Not many teachers will do for students what she does.
Its not Jackie that makes the class hard, its the department. It wouldnt even be that bad of a class except the tests are pretty brutal. Thankfully Jackie is always willing to help and explain things; she's an awsome teacher, a little motherly, but that only makes her better.
She is very helpful and she always try to help students to do well in the tests.
She is a great teacher, if you put in the effort and attend her lectures you are able to get an A. But it requires studying. She is great, it is the Math department in general that is ridiculous.
Jackie is a really nice lady, but its hard to get anything out of her lectures. She doesn't explain what she is doing and often makes mistakes. One good thing about her class is that she allows you to do corrections on the tests. So if you take her, go to a different lecture. You can still do the test corrections.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She knows math but makes mistakes in lecture constantly. She is the head of the math lab which is scary considering the mistakes she makes and then argues with students when she needs to make the corrections. She strictly observes the honor code in her class. Guys if you have scruff you will be kicked out o
I really learned a lot. It is true that she makes mistakes when she explains but she corrects it and it is not a big deal. Everyone makes mistakes. She helps a lot after tests to get points back. You have to do homework and if you dont mind to do it during the weekends, it is ok. She is funny and finishes class early. I recommecd her.
Jackie is wonderful! Fun class! It's hard, but I am a math freak, so I enjoyed it. Jackie is very helpful and tries build good relationship with every student! She knows most of t he names in class. She lets do test corrections to increase the grade for the test, she is understanding and very loyal. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Jackie is the nicest teacher in the world. She cares 100% about her students success... and gives out extra credit and test corrections when she doesnt have too! You ROCK Jackie! Math was not easy for me, but now I got to graduate from UVU. Keep up the AWESOME work!
The professor herself is TERRIBLE. She's ornery, stuck-up, bitter, and has grade C teaching skills. The only reason it's worth taking her section is for test corrections for half-credit back. Attendance to labs is semi-mandatory, but lectures are not. If you're pretty good at calc, you're ok. If you are looking for a teacher to help you, stay away
She is horrible at teaching but the nicest lady you'll ever meet!Take it from her! Shes the only teacher who gives test corrections...just go to Wadley's lectures and you'll be fine. Add her class, but go to someone elses
Decent teacher. Seems to care about student learning. I wouldn't recommend the evening class because she is usually tired and frequently lets class out early. Test corrections are the same as a class being curved, so don't use that as a reason to take from her.
Take from Wadley (or anyone else that is available). The test correction factor is appealing but if she gets busy at all then you won't get any help there. She'll ignore emails and turn you away if you try talking to her in her office (even though she tells everyone how she'll bend over backwards to help you out). Horrible class, worse teacher.
Jackie is ok. Her classes consist of her doing problems on the board the entire time, and then it's over. I felt like she never really "teaches" the material, she just shows you problems and how to do it, although she does answer everyone's questions. The test correction feature of her class is helpful, but you HAVE TO SHOW YOUR WORK on the test.
Jackie is a really nice teacher, but she does not know how to teach very well. She makes mistakes constantly during lectures and does not answer questions very well. If you haven't had Calc before, good luck. Otherwise you should be fine.
Jackie is one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. She doesn't interact with the class--she just does problems on the board. Math is not my forte, and her teaching style didn't help AT ALL. This class was dang hard, I studied like crazy and still didn't do too hot on the tests. If you have the option, take it from Wadley.
Jackie is a horrible teacher. For teaching all she does is copy the problems from s solution manual for the entire class. The only perk is the test corrections. So take the class from her and the go to wadleys lecture and you'll do great
TERRIBLE! She's constantly goes off on random tangents throughout class, causing her to rush through her examples because she's wasted time. She makes numerous mistakes (per example) meaning that being a math teacher, she can't do math. Test corrections are the only perk. The only way I learned was going to review sessions. TAs put Jackie to shame.
Don't listen to everyone else, Jackie is fine. If she sucks so bad, why does her class do just as well, if not better, than the rest of the department on the tests? I never went to class and I still did well - people are just pissed because they suck at math and blame it on her. Take it from Jackie, and if you do not like her, go to anothers lectur
I decided to rate just to rebut all the nasty comments. Jackie is AWESOME! She does test corrections out of her own time that help your grade. Very kind and encouraging. Ask questions to your TA, go to the math lab. Let calculus become 2nd nature. Poor Jackie made forgivable mistakes in class because she was overworked, I think.
Jackie is not the greatest professor. She often seemed confused and made several mistakes in lecture. Take her though because of test corrections and if you don't like here attend a different lecture.
She is the worst ever!! She constantly makes mistakes in lecture. The best part of her class was keeping a tally of how many times she'd mess up in day. Easy class, she offers test corrections which were nice. Take her class, just make sure you go to someone elses class and then you'll likely get a good grade.
Take this class. Jackie struggles in lecture to teach difficult concepts, but there are many outside options to get help. The test corrections outweigh and her helpfulness outweigh the fact she is not the best teacher.
Many would say that she isnt a good teacher, but if you do the hw and follow her notes you will get a good grade, she prepares you for the exams adequately and the TAs normally are helpful. Test corrections are always a plus and she is always there to lend a helping hand.
All she does is stand in front of the class and read almost word for word everything on the powerpoint. She doesn't even create the powerpoints (another teacher does). It's a ridiculous math class and she is not a helpful teacher
Jackie doesn't really understand the material well enough to explain it to others, and can't answer questions. She will get flustered when you don't understand her confusing explanations, then she will just move on. You need to do a lot of book studying to understand what the material wants. I wouldn't take her again.
Jackie has no idea what she is talking about! If you dont want to have to teach yourself almost everything, do not take this class from her! Horrible! Shes a nice lady though:)
Jackie is great. Lectures are not always the most compelling, so it requires study outside of class (however, none of my other math professors have ever been much better) She is one of my favorite professors I've had at BYU. Exceptionally fair grader, has very flexible hours and is always eager to meet with students to help them.
If you want a Math teacher , she is not one. yes she may know math but she is NOT a teacher. she also seems to have a grudge against poeple asking for help and not understnading. If you take her, you better off teaching yourself
Definitely the worst class I've taken at BYU. The professor does not know how to explain the concepts well and she teaches like she could care less about people actually understanding what she's saying. She belabors the easy topics but skims the difficult concepts.
If you have to take this class, that it from another professor. She is horrible and doesn't understand what she is teaching. She offers the chance to do test corrections, but is so vague on how much that will help you. She also doesn't curve even when the test average is like 50%.
Her grading policies dont make any sense, never curves, horrible teacher. You end up teaching yourself. I recommend a different teacher if you want to actually learn the material. Shes a nice lady, but this has been a very unenjoyable part of my BYU experience
Jackie is a horrible math teacher. She just reads the slides in class (that are not even her's; another teacher made them and made the lectures). She doesn't know how to answer questions and will just refer you to the math lab. If you can DO NOT take this class from her. If you have to get a TUTOR right away and meet often!!!
After 3 years I've never felt the need to rate any of my professors but I am doing this because I want to let anyone know that if you take a class with her you have to work by your own. SO if you want to learn in class. DONT take it from her. She is a horrible teacher.
I have also never posted on here but I need to be honest, Jackie was a Terrible teacher. I have an A in the class only because i learned everything from the book. I stopped going to class it only confused me more. Take it from anyone before her is my advise.
Just like everyone else has said, Jackie is a terrible. Anyone can sit in front of a class and read slides. I went to the first day of class and never went after that. Go to all TA reviews. They teach more in 2 hours than Jackie does the whole semester. Just be prepared to teach yourself. Jackie is the worst teacher I've ever had.
Jackie seems like she may be a nice lady, but she is the worst professor I've had at BYU. I stopped going to lectures after a few weeks because they were not well prepared or presented and you end up having to teach yourself from the book anyhow. Definitely take it from someone else if you can.
The reviews say it all. This is possibly the easiest class in the world. I got an A+ and was basically doing nothing. TAs are useless, Lectures are straight forward and interesting. If you want someone to teach you Math then watch Sesame Street. If you want an easy grade booster then this is the one for you.
Jackie is awesome... Make sure you always do the test corrections they are a big help. Be in class and listen to lecture. If you do these things you will succeed in her class. You have every chance to succeed in Jackie's class.. Go to her office and get to know her.
You will love Jackie if you do the test corrections and go to class... These two things are the key to success in her class... TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF TEST CORRECTIONS they will save you!!!!!
Jackie doesn't teach well at all, just reads slides and confuses you more. I never went to class and got an A. Do all of the homework and it'll just be review when you take the tests. Do EVERY question on the practice tests with the TAs. The review questions are very similar to the exam questions. Do the test corrections to raise your grade!
Jakie is a really good person and I could see us being good friends. For a math class it was pretty fun and thats saying something because I absolutely HATE math. Tests were hard but all math is hard. Good Luck!!
She may get flustered by her students, but she is the ONLY Math 110 teacher to give test corrections, period. Those will save your grade.
Jackie is pretty chill, she is overall a good teacher and an amazing person. Take advantage of her test corrections because she is the only one that keeps doing this to raise your grade.
Jackie is one of the best people I've ever met. On the other hand, not the best teacher. I understand that it was an evening class but sometimes it seemed she was way out of it and confused herself. I learned more from the online homework. She teaches you one way and the homework has you do it another way. Take advantage of test corrections.
Jackie is an awesome math teacher. She is the best at BYU for Math 110.
Jackie is amazing understanding life issues and is always there to help. Great conversations and really helps with extra credit.
If you have to take Math 110 she is the Best professor! I am terrible at Math and basically failed all my test and because I did all the homework and the curve I ended up with a B. You have test corrections and can take the HW quizzes unlimited times until the last day of class. BUT you basically have to self taught yourself with Youtube.
Jackie is very merciful and you can totally get an A. Even if you fail every test and final. Do the test correction, and get to know her, she is very nice but you will need to self taught to actually understand and learn. The homework teaches you all you need to know for the test. She curves the grade depending on the class average.
show up and dont miss class. She gives you opportunities to do test corrections for every midterm that come in handy for your grade. She was a decent teacher but you have to pay attention with what is going on and if not it can be easy to get lost. She is an easy grader and lenient. Good choice.
