AWESOME!!! Really clear on what she wants and how to do it. She even sat down with me and helped me plan my speech. Would DEFINITELY recommend and even take her again myself. Loved the class (however, i loved public speaking already). She is seriously the nicest professor! PLEASE take her class! You definitely won't regret it
Love Jaclyn. She's cool and wears weird clothes.
Take home midterm and final, she's very helpful during class and in office hours. She will work through your papers step by step if you ask her to. This class is a lot of reading, but any 3300 class is. Definitely go with Jaclyn because the rhetoric you see is very straight forward. I was never confused.
I absolutely loved Jaclyn's Rhetorical Criticism class. She was always so full of energy and truly passionate about the topic. It's great for people who want to bypass the bore of super structured classes because it's mostly discussion-based. She makes sure to get feedback from us so that it's not just her lecturing the entire period.
Awesome teacher with a genuine interest in her students success both in academia and more so, in life. Very cool person. I highly recommend for any class. She cares!
Jaclyn is definitely one of my best professors. I recommend her to all of my friends. I would love to take her classes in the future. She's really gets to know her students!
Professor Nolan was by far my favorite teacher. She is very specific with what she wants and I learned so much from her class! She is an interesting lecturer and cares a lot about your grade.
Jaclyn was great! She really turned a not-so-interesting subject into something everyone could relate to. She was an awesome professor. Really clear on assignments and was willing to help you in any way she could. She was also pretty hilarious and coming to class was not the hardest thing to do, seeing how attendance was mandatory. TAKE HER!
Professor Nolan was awesome - she was always passionate about each topic we learned in class and explained it very thoroughly. Her discussions were interesting & made class worth going to. Definitely one of my favorite COMM professors!
She is a very nice person, but does grade speeches fairly. Put in the effort and you can make an A.
Nolan was awesome! Odd taste in clothes but her lectures are so well organized. After a few weeks you will want to be prepared because she really enjoys listening to people's opinions and is very open to discussion. If you do your research, reading and give her something interesting to read, you'll get the grade you deserve. Would take her again
Very kind and caring person but awful prof. I took her class because she had a great RMP score but don't be fooled by that. Her classes are absolutely pointless until the week before you present. She also makes you use a cookie cutter outline to give your speech and will not hesitate to mark off if you deviate away from it.
Jaclyn is the best! She's witty, kind, and absolutely adorable. She makes sure that you never feel stupid for anything you say (even if it is kinda stupid) and she's always willing to give you feedback to make sure you're understanding the material. I would definitely take her class again and I recommend it to everyone!
She's a great person to talk with if you're nervous about doing public speaking! Her calm demeanor and friendly pieces of advice always help me when I prepare speeches for her class. Her feedback on speeches will help you in the long run to give better presentations. Workload is not hard at all, just plan ahead for research on certain speech topics
This class is quite challenging, and you need to take your time on the three major papers to get good grades on them. Jaclyn is a wonderful professor who really cares about her students and their learning. She is always accessible outside of class. There is also a take home final and midterm. You also have multiple outlines due each week.
Jaclyn is so cool, and she is so kind. She does a great job at making public speaking less scary. Definitely, take her!!
Jaclyn was by far my favorite professor of the semester. She is so kind and very accessible. She goes above and beyond to make sure you succeed. The class really did help me overcome my fears of public speaking and made me a better writer and speaker overall. I would definitely recommend this class with Jaclyn to anyone.
This class makes absolutely no logical sense as a public speaking class. This class should teach everyone how to effectively speak in front of a large audience. All this class does is annoy with confusing little 10 question quizzes. You should be graded on your speaking, not how well you can do on 2 multiple choice tests with info you never learned
I am a junior at UGA and throughout my time here she has been one of the best professors I have had. She makes you work hard but she cares so much for every student and wants them to do so well. I would recommend her to anyone and I plan on trying to take her again!
Jaclyn is amazing. She really wants everyone to do well, and she's very open to hearing student feedback. She genuinely wants to make sure that everyone understands the material. Her essays are intensive but there are opportunities to run your ideas past her and see what she has to say. It's a very work intensive class, but you learn so much.
DO NOT TAKE PUBLIC SPEAKING. This class is so unorganized and poorly run that you don't learn anything. I tried so hard in this class and was a great speaker but there were so many pointless unspecified assignments that they didn't even tell you were for a grade that it made the class so useless. I wanted to like this class so bad and it screwed me
Sooo Dr. Nolan is cool. She works with you and wants you to succeed. This seems like an easy A class however your fate is truly in the TA's hands. I never made a 100 on a speech. I got a B- on a speech talking about myself lol. Make sure you get a good (non biased)TA and an A is totally attainable. I would recommend this professor however.
I don't understand how this class is about PUBLIC SPEAKING but speeches don't really determine your final grade. It is literally the mid-term and final exam that you don't really learn much about that can make or break your grade. This professor is such a phony. She acts nice but she is not reasonable. I recommend taking interpersonal.
Her midterm and final exam multiple choice were very difficult. she promised to post her slides for the final but didn't then my class ended up missing 10 questions from the slide. grade depends on TA. you have to attend large lecture or you won't receive tophat points. speeches were okay but TA were instructed to grade harshly on everything....
I think she is a overrated professor. She is nice but not good. No idea why she tries so hard making this class complicated. Seriously, most of us were taking this class for the credit hours. I understand she invested her career in this field but be more reasonable. The grading also doesn't make sense. Comment section: "Great Speaker." Grade 79?
Heavily depends on your TA when it comes to grading your speeches, but you'll be ok if you have a TA. The hard/annoying part of this class is the midterm and the final that are NOTHING like what is in large lecture or the textbook or the PowerPoint slides. The midterm and final are the sole reason why I got an A- and not a VERY high A.
I loved taking her for public speaking. She's very reassuring and wants you to succeed. She's willing to work with you and gives constructive feedback. I would definitely take her again. She's also a really cool person if you get to know her.
Professor Nolan is someone who is a strong teacher that you can learn from. She does a great job of explaining concepts to our class in numerous ways. Love this professor! Would highly recommend to anyone needing to take a class she is taking! She is someone who grades papers fairly well, but it isn't an easy A so don't write them the night before
Dr. Nolan is an incredible professor! She's so kind and truly cares about the success of her students. The class itself is difficult to keep up with if you don't stay focused and complete all of your outlines and papers. However, Dr. Nolan made a class I thought I would hate totally enjoyable. I highly recommend taking her!!
This was such a great class. It was super easy day to day, and she was a generous grader for speeches. Our final was just to give each other positive comments and then everyone got a 100. She works hard to make everyone feel comfortable and confident while speaking.
I love attending her lecture on Friday. She herself is a gem but if you're in M/W/F COMM1110 you're most likely to be taught by a TA on M/W and depending on who they are will impact your experience in this class. I had Daryn Sinclair as my TA and she was wonderful.
She is a fair teacher. Midterm and final are pretty pointless and more difficult than it should be but overall, she teaches well.
Professor Nolan is so caring and nice. She fosters a really safe learning environment. I genuinely liked going to class. That being said, this class is a LOT of work. The main grades are three 6-8 page papers, a take home midterm & final (which are basically essays), and daily homework. Nolan is a tough, but fair grader.
There are 4 papers- one of them is a group paper (Can be individual). there's readings everyday but like usually they're class discussions so its not that serious. you have to outline readings too. she's very chill and would cancel class to have online quizzes. cool teacher, fun class, and very caring teacher!!
I love Nolan. She is such an incredible professor. She does grade "hard" on speeches but it helps so much because she makes you work for your grade and it makes you such a better speaker. There's about 10 quizzes in the course but they're all very easy, and the midterm is easy as long as you study your quizzes and at least read the material once.
Jaclyn is a really great professor and makes you feel very comfortable when you are speaking. That being said, she can be strict on the speech grades, but most people's increase each time. She is always willing to help you improve and definitely use the Presentation Collaboratory it will get you brownie points. Tests are all on quizlet!
She is one of the best professors I have had so far at UGA! She is very invested in her students and genuinely wants us to do well. She is very passionate and knowledgeable about the material and it definitely shows when she is lecturing. This class was very discussion heavy, but she creates a very welcoming classroom so discussions arent bad.
If you follow the rubric on speeches and practice your speech a ton, she will give you a good grade. She really cares about her students and genuinely wants them to improve at public speaking. She is available for outside help and will be very specific in what you need to work on. Truly a great teacher.
Jaclyn is great- she's super helpful in improving your speeches. She's not expecting everyone to be experienced speakers, and is helpful in learning how to deliver speeches. Speeches weren't bad, as long as you did them. The midterm and final have nothing to do with the class work done, and they determine your grade- why I got an A- and not A.
Jaclyn is an absolute gem. I loved this class. Public speaking was scary to me at first but my speaking skills have greatly improved because of this class. Jaclyn is understanding and ready to help you if you need it. She was a tough grader at first but became more lenient. Very understanding during corona
She is a tough grader when it comes to speeches, she definitely makes you earn your grade. But she is a great professor and so nice. Go to office hours to talk about your speech and she will help you in any way. She really cares about her students.
This class bothered me just because of the structure, but Jaclyn is super nice. She's a very friendly and helpful professor, and she's available for outside help if you need her. It's just too much busy work/random assignments for my liking. Speeches are pretty easy, though, if you listen to what she's asking for.
She cares about her students. She always answered very fast if I had a question. She was very willing to help if you ask for it. If you disagreed with a grade, she is willing to discuss it and change it if you made a valid argument. The quizzes come from the book and are kind of random. Follow the rubric for the speeches and you will be fine.
Make sure to read the textbook before taking the online quizzes. Also make sure to do the drafts of speeches and build up from there and participate in class. I would not call her a tough grader but do not expect this to be easy peasy.
Asynchronous course with no textbook required. Weekly assignments mattered but most of the class was a few discussion posts per week and an additional graded assignment, which was usually a video. Easy to keep up with if you're organized and Nolan was accessible whenever you needed help (which was rare). Interesting readings, would take again.
One of my favorite professors here at UGA. take public speaking with her if you can!!!
Jaclyn has a nice facade that lures you into suspecting she would be kind in her grading and expectations but this is false. For an intro class required by most of us, she likes to go on power trips and nitpick every detail of your presentations and assignments to ensure she feels as important as your other professors. Take this with anyone else.
I felt that the professor was nice and informative on the actual act of speech-giving. Where she fell flat was preparation for the Midterm and the Final Exam. Speeches are the main grades but the two exams still exist-for which only a day of slide show notes was given on them respectively. More covering on exams would make this professor perfect.
She is nice. She is the hardest grader and if you do the assignments and speechs just like she asks you may get a C or B in the class. Not to mention the extremely hard final and midterm that if it wasnt online would have failed. I put effort into the class showed up every time and handed in my work. Im an A student usually, not in this clas
I like Prof Nolan when it comes to the speech aspect of the class but theres two exams and the class does not prepare you for them and are hard to study for. She basically says read these chapters of the book for your midterm/final and thats it. Theres lots of info int he textbook and i didn't do well on the tests but got A+'s on all speeches
Jaclyn is a very nice person; however, she is not the nicest professor. I do not recommend taking intro to public speaking with her at all. She is a very hard grader and had us take two exams over a textbook that she failed to regularly mention. This class was definitely more of an english class than a public speaking class.
Professor Nolan comes off as super nice, chill, relatable and she is all of those things but grades super super harshly that does not correlate w her laid back attitude. She nit picks the delivery of all speeches and theres 2 tests based on the test book that are ridiculously hard and she gives very little preparation for. Avoid if you can.
I LOVE Jaclyn! She is very kind, helpful, and is always available. She answers emails very quickly, and is very willing to work with you in any way to help you succeed. I will say her tests are pretty difficult, and is a little tough on grading. Specifically speech delivery. However, she is very clear in her responses and is overall amazing!!
Professor Nolan is one of my favorite professors I've had at UGA. This was my second class with her, and she has been so caring and accessible in both. This class is a lot of work, and attendance was pretty important, but she was very helpful in answering any questions and is a very fair grader. Definitely take her if you get the chance!
Jaclyn is very nice and approachable, but is a very tough grader for a 1000 level class. The class is enjoyable, but her tests are difficult and are barely reviewed in class before hand. If you want an easy A, take this class from a different professor.
Jaclyn is a sweet soul and genuinely cares about her students. She was always available outside of class for support. You will have 4 speeches, in class activities, and peer/self evals. She makes the rubric for each speech very clear and is fair at grading. Only complaint is the final and midterm are unjustly hard with little in class preparation.
After 1 year at UGA, she was definitely my favorite professor. Known to be a bit of a tough grader on speeches, but to me it always felt totally fair at the least. I had to miss class often for excused reasons and she was always super accommodating. Only complaint is that the exams are HARD. Would have gotten A but had 0s for unsubmitted work.
If you want to improve your public speaking skills, take this class. Could not recommend this class more. It's an easy class as long as you prepare well for your speeches and read the rubric carefully. Was always willing to give points as long as your gave a good argument. Very nice, cared about her students, always accessible outside of class.
Professor Nolan is genuinely so caring and ready to help. She will help you with every step of your speech and was not too hard of a grader. She will look over your drafts and give you excellent feedback. She is amazing!! Attendance is required and she takes up in-class assignments for a grade (miss class= 0 on assignment).
I took her online course and it was SO GOOD! She truly cares about her students and their success in the course. The course is mostly discussions and presentations. The material is easy to grasp and interesting. Her communication throughout the course was stellar. She provides helpful feedback and is a great grader! Cannot recommend her enough!
Super kind and awesome professor! If you put effort in you will be fine and she is happy to help you
Jaclyn truly cares about her students. The class is made up of 4 speech grades and in class assignments. She is very clear with rubrics and as long as you follow the outlines for speeches you will get good grades. She cultivates a classroom every student is comfortable in so giving speeches is less intimidating. However, the tests are hard.
Jaclyn Nolan was a great teacher to have this semester. She is very understanding and nice, always in a happy mood, and just creates an overall fun environment to be in. You will be graded off 4 speeches, but you have amply time to prepare and complete them. Its not a guaranteed A+, but don't procrastinate and you'll be fine.
Jaclyn was the sweetest professor. She was always clear about her expectations on assignments. Since it is a standardized course, she has to give a midterm and final, which were both kinda hard. However, most of your grade is 4 speeches, which gave you creative freedom. Overall, if you have the option, take Nolan! She so funny and nice.
Dr. Nolan is great! She is very down to earth, always in a great mood, and always offers help to you. She gave you a lot of time to work on your speeches (some off notecards and some off manuscripts) and the speech days were always fun. If you can take Dr. Nolan for this class or another, do it.
Dr. Nolan was honestly one of the best professors I have had! Her lectures are engaging and work largely consist of participation and peer evals. As far as speeches goes, Dr. Nolan was always available to help me with my material and presentation. Utilize her office hours!!
Professor Nolan does an amazing job with this honors section. She is a really down to earth and caring professor. Her class grade is heavily based on the 4 speeches you give during the semester, supplemented by the activities, midterm, and final. She gives helpful feedback on speeches and delivery and is willing to help one-on-one in office hours.
This class honestly just sucks. You have an outline (3-4 pages) due every class period (3 times a week) over a different speech. The grading for them goes from a 100 to an 80 to a 70 to a 60, no in- between. And if you're not in class that day, she gives you a straight up 0. Never had so much busy work in my life. Nice lady, terrible class.
Dr. Nolan is a literal angel, she has the most positive energy and I'd say she's definitely one of my favorite professors I've had at UGA. Yes, the class is a decent amount of work but if you're not submitting crappy work you'll do fine, 3 decent-sized papers and outlines due either every class or every other class, no exams which is nice.
- Not accessible outside of class - Subjective grader that does NOT have clear grading criteria - Excess amounts of homework (more than all of my other classes combined my semester) - Feedback was misleading and unclear what was done wrong and how to fix it Bottom line...only take prof. nolan is you love homework and never knowing how to succeed
Dr. Nolan is the sweetest woman ever! She cares about students and their success. Her rubrics are very clear so follow them exactly or she will count off. Make sure you keep up with the TopHat assignments- they are listed in the syllabus. There is a midterm and final that can be hard so study in advance. Definitely recommend!!!
She is one of the sweetest teachers I've ever had and is always so kind to all of her students. However, if you look at your notecards when you speak(we are allowed to have them) she counts off points. The midterm and final are also extremely difficult with little to no preparation. Overall wonderful person, not great preparation for exams.
I don't know why anyone would not rate her a 5, she is a very nice teacher and is very understanding and lax on deadlines. Just advice though, I didn't understand this until near the end of the semester, but there are in-class assignments that go toward your grade, so it is probably a good idea to show up.
If you have the opportunity to be in one of Dr. Nolan's classes, take it! She is 100% my favorite COMM professor I've ever had. She is so easy to talk to and so easily accessible. Her energy and kindness really make the class. I will say her papers/assignments can be difficult, but her instructions are very clear and she helps you through all of it
She is a compassionate person but DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO GRADE! I simply don't know how it can take months to put in a grade for a speech you deliver live in person. She repeatedly said she would have the grade in "by the end of the week" for 3 WEEKS until the grade was entered. We were delivering new speeches before she graded previous ones. UGH
Dr. Nolan was so kind and understanding throughout this course. She always replied to my emails quickly and was very receptive to the ideas I had about projects and assignments. I loved having her as my instructor, and I'm so thankful to have had her for this course!
She was so nice! Very flexible, easy class.
Mandatory participation and going over basic slides was frustrating. But she is clear on grading and sets deadlines to get speeches done. Tough grader and a good bit of homework outside of class with textbook and writing the speeches. She's funny and not a bad professor, just grades somewhat harsh.
Take Dr. Nolan for your public speaking class! She is very clear on grading and deadlines. Public speaking can be hard for a lot of people, but she creates a welcoming, comfortable environment and you will get through it if you practice ahead of time and follow her guidelines.
Ms. Nolan is a true treasure, and I would recommend this class to anyone who has the opportunity to take it. With four speeches over the semester, very easy TopHat HW (just don't forget to do it), and occasional in-class activities, this class was enjoyable to take. Ms. Nolan is also an extremely kind and caring person, always looking out students.
Professor Nolan is an amazing instructor. She understands mental health and wants to see you succeed. We had 4 speeches, a midterm and final, and a handful of Top Hat assignments. Listen to her expectations and put forth effort, and you'll have a great time!
Class based around 4 speeches with outlines which make up most of the grade. There's a midterm and final, but you can easily pass them if you study like an hour. Textbook is required and is through TopHat, it was like $50. She has clear grading criteria and expects decent effort. Overall, light class that is good for developing speaking skills.
Dr. Nolan knows what she's doing but is also incredibly nice and makes it obvious that she wants you to succeed. Shes passionate about what she teaches, and it tends to be contagious in the classroom. She is an incredibly fair grader and is very open about how things are graded. 10/10 would take again.
Very sweet and engaging professor. My only critique about her was that it took forever to get grades back. We also had to pay for a Top Hat subscription. Overall though, I recommend the class just put in the work ethic behind your speeches.
Dr. Nolan is very sweet and really provides individualized advice regarding your public speaking ability. The class isn't hard at all, and the only real work is writing your speeches. Grading is very sporadic though and speech grades are randomly harsh, making it difficult to get an A, so make sure you show up to every class activity.
Dr. Nolan expects a lot out of her students and her guidelines are stricter than other public speaking classes, but she is flexible, provides helpful feedback, and has office hours. She recognizes and awards hard work. Activity grades are awarded just for being present in class so make sure to show up. Offers extra credit, very funny too!
Dr. Nolan is a really nice professor who cares deeply about her students. Her speeches are graded a bit harshly, but she gives feedback that allows you to improve throughout the semester. She will also help you improve if you visit her during office hours. She takes a while to release the speech grades. Overall, I would highly recommend taking her!
I was very worried about this class because I hate public speaking, but Dr. Nolan was so sweet and understanding. She made the class a good environment to be in. She grades a little harshly sometimes but just follow the rubric and do the TopHat assignments and you'll be fine.
Dr. Nolan is the most laid back, but clearly smart and effective professor I have ever had. She cares, is very down to earth, and is a good teacher. Midterm is a little tough, but overall very fair and cares about student grades
Dr Nolan is great and gives helpful feedback. Sometimes that feedback doesn't come until after you've given your next speech, so hard to make corrections. I've scored well on the speeches, but the midtem was rough. Scared of the final and it possibly ruining my grade. Will see!
Dr. Nolan is actually the best. Such a caring professor. The best.
Professor is awesome! I love her personality so much. She's not the best at time management but she acknowledges this and doesn't penalize students because of it. She is willing to offer extensions if you need them and is always super empathetic. Interesting class, a lot of work, but for a required course, I loved it!
Dr. Nolan is an incredibly nice person. Your biggest grades are your speeches, but as long as you follow the rubric and/or attend her office hours, you will do just fine. Little to prepare for the midterm and final, but as long as you do well on your speeches, you will be okay. Definitely recommend taking her class!
Professor Nolan is a super solid speech professor - I'd take her again 100%, with the slight caveat that she IS a pretty tough grader on some things - you'll hear from her that "you did a great job" and then get a 80% on a speech. Other than that, she is very kind and understanding if you are absent. (In her words, "s**t happens, all good.")
She is a nice person but not good at time management or delegating tasks. She takes way too long to grade assignments and the feedback only makes sense if you go to office hours. She gives the opportunity to re-write papers but relies heavily on Turnitin AI checker. She is definitely type-b. She doesn't give extra credit. I won't take her again.
She is very and extremely unreasonable she acts all nice and kind but tbh she is not understanding at all. DO NOT fall for her nice act I had a 89 in her class and she refused to round up after going to her class all semester long. I hope she sees this. hard grader and the midterms are hard she is not a good proffesor she does not actually teach.
