Really great teacher. Class was fun and easy if you study the material she teaches. Just study from notes and don't miss her class. Exam is directly from her notes. Many people did not do so well, and that is only because they did not study notes.
Most awesomest teacher ever!! You actually remember everything you learn and can apply a lot of that knowledge to real life. Best class at VCU.
She posted exam review material very late. She laughed at inappropriate times, treated students as if they were kids and yet expected a lot of material to be memorized and understood (it wasn't hard, just bad for an entry-level course). Her lecture-style was boring, and as the semester went on, her handwriting on the board got progressively worse.
One of my favorite professors. Great personality! She breaks down complicated things so they are very simple and easy to understand. Very easy to receive an A if you show up and pay attention.
This class ruined my 4.0! She only uses the white board and her handwriting is not good! If you enjoy being talked to like a five year (even when the material is extremely difficult) then take her! Her test are a pain bc of how she words the questions. No curve! Must attend every class to get partic. points. An A is poss. but difficult!
You must attend every class. All of her exams are based off her lecture notes and some readings from the book(which she tells you). Her exams can be tricky because shes likes to put "a and b" "only c" etc. Her clicker points counts as one test grade. She likes to explain concepts through drawings which i thought was helpful and entertaining.
Class isn't mandatory, but go. I looked forward to attending class because her lectures were interesting and Dr. Vick is awesome. Her exams are straight forward and directly from her notes in class -- no surprises. One of the best professors I have ever had at VCU, hands down! Super smart woman. She's chill and very helpful. Take Economic Botany!
I am never one to rate professors, but if you fail this class it is your own doing. She is a no-trick professor&tells you everything you need to know for her exams.Go to class, take notes& if you are lucky to get a study guide go over it as well. I liked her so much that I took her for 322 and the setting was the same. Great proffessor IMO
Exams are straight from notes. Helpful, office hours are available and she even goes out of her way to help you if you can't make them. Great teacher.
I really like her class. She is very thorough and explains things really well. Her test questions are straight from your lecture notes, so if you come to class and study, you can't fail.
All of the tests are straight from lecture. She gives little to no homework but some classwork is extra credit. The tests are tricky, so study hard and go to SI sessions. Otherwise, Dr. Vick is funny and always willing to help you.
Everyone is different. I took her class because of all the great reviews. BUT SHE DOES NOT WORK FOR ME! She talks like she's teaching 4th graders and like she is nervously giving a big presentation. Just doesn't work for me. Where's the energy? What are you talking about? This is gonna be a long semester. Pray for me
Jackie is one of my favorite professors this semester. Sure she treats us like kids but that doesn't matter. Her tests are literally straight from the lecture notes and she does activities some days to give you bonus points for being there! She's really sweet and only writes notes on the white board (no powerpoint). TAKE HER.
I loved her! She's passionate, cute, funny, and a little awkward, but her lectures are crystal clear and it's easy to take good notes. Personally, I didn't feel like I was being talked down to. If you don't have the textbook be sure to attend classes, tests are a bit tough. Loved the "plant of the day" too! Highly recommend her.
TRICK QUESTIONS! shes one of those professors that does weirdly worded questions and there is always more than one answer to each question. you think you did good and you end up with a C. you literally have 4 exam grades and like maybe 6 bonus points. its awful. spends half the class drawing on the board and its super confusing. save me
Tests are hard class average is consistently in the 60s- mid 70s and has very confusing questions on test. She make the class to hard for an intro bio class
Her tests can be tricky because she puts a lot of "both A and B" or "none of the above" or "all of the above" BUT other than that she is a really sweet lady. She LOVES plants and does not do powerpoint notes.
Professor Vick is a really chill, fun teacher!! I took BIOL 152 before taking her BIOL 151 section, and half of the course material was review. Her class is really easy. Make sure you study photosynthesis and cell respiration though...
Take her class! Come to class and write down the notes. Her tests are based on the notes. Her tests are be tricky at times , but if you study, it's no problem! She's a great teacher and is clear. Got an A in the class
I dont understand the perfect reviews she has, her lectures are straightforward and the notes are simple to follow but my GOD her tests are INCREDIBLY hard. Over 50% of my class failed her first exam, even when her (incredibly misleading)practice test looked like it came out of a freshman high school biology class. Studying didn't help much at all.
She is a really good teacher and gives good notes in class. However, the test comes entirely from the textbook. So reading is very important. Also, your entire grade is based on 4 tests which are cumulative and test 5 which is the final and replaces your lowest test grade. She gives your practice tests before the actual so that helps a lot too.
When you first start the class, it's going to seem like a lot of work. You will have a ton of vocab words to define, and several handouts. It gets a lot better midway through the semester when you get the vocab down. She is really nice, and easy to talk to. :)
Runnn! naa jk.Shes a cool chick, easy to talk to but her class is not easy. She tells you in the beginning of the year to read the book because some concepts are so in depth its hard to cover in 50mins. Easy if you study hard as bricks if you don't! She pretty strict in her ways not that lenient so if you take her study or you will fail, seriously.
Spent alot of time studying the book and still failed to pass her class with a decent grade, plus she's kinda rude and a little weird
This last year Doc Vick completely changed. These rating used to be accurate, however a peer called her out and embarrassed her saying that she isn't a good teacher just an easy grader. She pulled a 180 degree change on her approach. 5 tests, no curves no extra points. No test average was above a 60 most in the low thirties. Don't take her for an A
So.. at the beginning she seemed fun. Test one came along, MORE THAN HALF THE CLASS FAILED... on test ONE. She made an easy class hard. For a week we went over punnet squares (come on!), she forgot to post review questions, showed up late for an exam, draws on the board with small letters and basically says look it up later in your book later. -_-
Very clear lectures but must read the book. Tests cover material that's not gone over in class but is in the book. Her tests are difficult but fair. Overall, I think she's a great teacher and would recommend her. Getting an A so far.
Her test are very difficult and she throws in random questions that were never gone over in class and you can't even find them in the book. She teaches like she's teaching middle schoolers but then throws an extremely hard test at you. You can study for 10 days expecting an A, get a low B or worse. I recommend not taking her if you need an A
Not a good teacher what so ever! unless you enjoy being talked to like you're 5 years old... I go through lecture knowing everything and then her tests are absolutely ridiculous. DONT TAKE HER!
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! She is a terrible teacher. The only grades in her class include the exams which are ridiculous and hard. she goes over useless stuff in class that aren't even in the exams. Half the time she has no idea what she's talking about. if you ask her a question she says she doesn't know the answer or she'll just repeat herself.
Vick Is a nice person, don't get me wrong, but her tests literally kill the students. She strives to make you fail her tests. Her Lectures seem so simple and easy and you go in on exam day confident, only to get your hopes crushed... Goodluck to anyone who takes her and befriend the text book.
Professor Vick used to be the "easy" bio teacher. While apparently she has made the class more difficult, everyone that is complaining obviously have not opened the textbook. I've received an A and high B's on the three tests we've had so far. If you go to lecture and do the practice problems in the book BEFORE the tests, you'll be fine.
I had an high A in my bio101 course and have taken 2 years worth of biology in high schooll and NOTHING prepared me for this class. I spend over 10 hours a week studying and enter the test feeling very confident but the wording and set up of the test is very unclear. I also went to her office hours and she wasn't very helpful. I do not recommend!!
Lectures are pretty much pointless, she basically just reads the subtitles out of the book and gives a rough overview of the chapter. YOU ABSOLUTLY MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK COVER TO COVER FOR EACH CHAPTER. Go through and do the concepts checks at the end of each sections and the practice problems at the end of the chapter. Nice lady hard tests.
She gives the overall picture of each chapter during lecture but she is a bit shaky with details. Reading the textbook is necessary to do well on exams. Do the end of chapter questions, they tend to show up on tests.
gives a broad overview of the material in class but her tests are detail oriented and extremely hard. She seems to be shaky on the details herself. It feels like she wants her students to fail.
Listen. Jaclyn is a nice woman.I want an A not a nice professor. I don't completely blame her 151 is a Weed out class the dept purpsly makes hard. Be prepared to sweat and bleed bio if you take her. Read the book cover to cover. Know chapters like back of your hand kno graphs know footnotes index and table of contents and you'll still get a B
In class she only talks about the very general concept of the lesson that I thought it is better not to attend and save my time since eventually you will have to study every single thing in the textbook, COVER TO COVER. Her exams are extremely hard and very detailed. she doesn't drop any. I do not recommend her as a bio teacher.
Had her for Medicinal Botany lecture this past semester. If you take this class, don't expect her to actually teach after a point. She basically assigns research articles which make up majority of her tests. She does give quizzes on these, but don't expect them (or your grades) back. But if you can read and extract info without any help, easy A.
Her vague and confusing lectures do not prepare you for extremely detailed exams full of trick questions. If she ever shows up to her office hours, she refuses to go over the material you missed on exams. The only grades are 5 exams, nothing drops, she doesn't take doctors notes and she doesn't respond to emails. AVOID JACLYN VICK LIKE POISON IVY!
Botany lab was a horrible experience thanks to Dr. Vick. She doesn't teach. Instead, she gives you detailed ppts and worksheets and expects you to weed through it yourself. She is also one of the most unhelpful teachers I've had, in terms of responding to emails and putting up grades (i.e waited until finals week to post quizzes taken in January).
Vick is highly unprepared. She did not discuss any material for the exam, but she did show us how to tape a poster onto a wall and said that coupons are available in grocery stores(spent a lecture on it). No grades were up until the very last day grades were due. Basically made up numbers since she had no time. Can get an A if you're lucky!
Personally, I couldn't stand her. Her lecture is extremely broad and easy to understand because she teaches as if she's teaching 5th graders, but her exams are college level and really REALLY tough. However, if you do work outside of her lecture and actually read the chapters and study ahead of time you'll definitely be able to pass the class.
I am surprised both lecture and lab are continuing next semester. It was apparent she made little to no preparations before class. She spent a lecture teaching how to tape our posters to a wall. She laughs when you ask for what exam content will be. Lab expectations nonexistent; likely made up grades at end of semester because she ran out of time.
I'm surprised they are still offering lecture and lab next semester. This professor made little to no preparations prior to class. Spent an entire lecture on how to tape a poster to a wall. Lab expectations nonexistent. Probably made up grades at the end of lab because she was so behind. Was reported, don't think the department did much about it.
Vick is very nice and helpful if you have questions. Even though she wasn't always prepared you can tell that she is really interested in medicinal botany. If you go to class, take notes, read the articles and actually study for the exams and practicals for lab you will do well in the class.
I loved this class! I took it over the summer last year and I thought she was well prepared. If you took notes during class and followed along well, it wasn't difficult to do well in this class!
Awful teacher! Unprepared and frequently is wrong during her lectures. Her exams are very detailed and full of trick questions.
lectures are vague but tests are detail oriented and difficult. Read the book twice and you''ll be fine.
lectures are vague but tests are detail oriented and difficult. Read the book twice and you''ll be fine.
As a biology major it was thoroughly disappointing to take this class. Vick lectures are simple to basic concepts while the test material is very detailed with little to no correlation to what she explained in class. My advice? Drop for Jennings or Car, or just study the textbook and teach yourself. She was the worse professor I've ever had.
I really enjoy Dr. Vick's lectures. She is passionate about what she teaches. I like her teaching style, she doesn't use monotonous power points she actually draws the processes and pictures out as she explained them. Yes you have to read the book! Biology is detailed, you can't be lazy.
She's a very nice lady, and is very into what she does! Lectures are easy to follow and to take notes. Lots of quizzes, so just study your notes and you'll do fine. Tests however are much harder, so be prepared. If you come to class and put forth a little effort you'll do well. Medicinal Botany is much better than most other plant classes!!
Honestly, I thought she was a nice lady but her tests are ridiculously tricky and every time she lectures it seemed like she didn't know what she was talking about half the time. Her lectures although seem easy and simple, her tests are the complete opposite. I unfortunately have to take this class again.
This is class is not as bad as it seems!! I got an A in this class really easily and only studied for the tests the night before! She is way better than Jennings so take her! You will have to read the book but that should be expected! I will most likely take her again for medicinal botany!
Her class was very boring, and quite honestly she is not the best professor I've ever had. She lectures by mouth and draws pictures on the board. Other than that you have to read and do the online homeworks which help. Unfortunately her tests are extremely tricky. Overall she is average. If you struggle with Bio in general, do not take her
At first I thought the class was easy but then I failed the first test, studied insanely and still failed the next 2. It wasn't until I figured out tests were almost entirely from online activities did I pass. Online stuff is graded weirdly so when she recalculated it, I ended up with a D in the class so I have to retake it. And I'm a Bio major.
I barely went to class & ended up with a B. Yes, she's hard and her lectures are boring, but if you read the textbook, do the online hw, and go to SI, you'll be fine! Study with friends- it helps a LOT. Don't expect to not do any work and end up with an A! You're in college now.
She is an amazing biology professor and I always enjoyed going to her class because she makes it so interesting. She writes everything on the board that you need to know and her tests come straight from her lecture notes, but you have to think on her tests because her questions are tricky and this is what messed most people up in her class.
Dr. Vick is extremely nice, however, she doesn't use powerpoint, so if you skip one class, you will have trouble catching up. SERIOUSLY DON'T SKIP CLASS. I did, and did not do well at all in her class. Also, do the homework. Not only does it count for credit, it also helps prepare you for exams.
The powerpoints she puts online are exactly what she talks in class with a bit more explanation. You can skip classes, only if you do the reading and homework. Tests are fairly straightforward and include 2-3 chapters which is very manageable. When answering questions in class she sometimes sounds very unsure of herself
She tells you that tests are only on her lecture notes but actually her tests are very detailed and there are things on the tests that she doesn't cover in class, so reading the book is a must. She also doesn't use powerpoint so if you miss a class it's very difficult to catch up.
She teaches the material very well but what she teaches normally isn't answered clearly for her tests even though she'll say what she says in the lecture is what will be on the test. Its important that you read the textbook and the material that she taught in the lecture for the tests or you might not do very well.
She is not that great. It was my first semester so I didn't do much effort but her tests are ridiculously hard and she doesn't teach that well. If you plan to take her, read the book thoroughly and learn almost every word from the book. Only then you will get a B. I regret not putting effort in this class. I thought it would not be that hard.
Her notes are not helpful she doesnt use any technology so no powerpoints. She doesnt know what shes traching she is probably the worst teacher i had
She writes all her notes on the bored, but sitting near the front I never had trouble reading them. Paying attention in lecture is really beneficial, but preparation for tests outside of class is a necessity. If you don't study details, don't expect an A. SI sessions were also really helpful for this course. Overall, she's a really nice lady.
This class wasn't difficult if you read the text book. However, her lecture are often based on drawings from the book better explained. If you read before you go to class, you will be fine. Go to office hours. She makes a lot of mistakes in grading, especially in her answer keys.
She definitely puts the effort into creating her lectures, but personally her teaching skills didn't suit me. I had some issues during the semester in which I missed a few classes, and she didn't have much sympathy in that area. She definitely sticks to the "no excuses" rule pretty strictly. Tests are tough, READ THE BOOK.
Not the worst professor I've ever had, but far from the best. Her first exam was brutal and way harder than any of the quizzes. If you're worried about wrecking your GPA, I would be careful in taking this class. She also is very uncompromising when it comes to partial credit for fill in the blank answers.
Prof Vick is very passionate about what she teaches and overall is a nice professor. Her tests though, are brutal. They consist of 30% multiple choice/TF and 70% fill in the blank. It's pretty straightforward, you just have to memorize EVERY detail she writes down. Be prepared to study.
For some reason, usually it takes forever for her to post grades which is irritating.....
She's really tough and tests are unclear and nothing like the lectures.
Ok, I don't usually rate professors but I'm an average student. I actually like her teaching style oppose to others. No power points, she draws everything and explains processes in depth. She teaches material very slow so test are only a few chapters. She picks what she wants you to learn out of chapters but always use the book to enforce lessons!
I think she is great at presenting the materials, but make sure you copy down everything she says and not just the material she writes down. Her tests have very unclear questions. She takes FOREVER to grade tests even though they are scantrons. Other than that she's good.
Class was pretty straight forward but hard to keep up with. She cares a lot about her work and ask for the same in return. Do not take this class if you can't commit to quizzes or test EVERY Friday. If you go to all the classes and pay attention you should have no problem getting an A or B but make sure you don't fall behind.
highly recommended
It was difficult to pass just because i slacked and didn't learn how to do well in her class until halfway through the semester. Pay close attention to what she says!!! Write down what she says and take pictures of her diagrams later, and the questions on the exams will come straight from that.
Quizzes or tests every Friday. As long as you go to class and take really good notes , and study them, you should do really well on them. Attendance isn't mandatory but the quizzes and tests are off of the lectures. Personally I just made sure to go every class and took good notes (tried to write EVERYTHING). DON'T do the project the night be4.
I loved Dr Vick. Her syllabus laid everything out for you, and she stuck to it pretty strictly. You definitely need to come to class- she writes everything on the white board which allows her to explain things in great detail. Her lecture + the textbook gives you a clear understanding of what is one the test. Not a class for slackers.
Professor Vick is THE most amazing professor, her lectures are good for people that are visual learners. She doesn't have power points, but she draws out and explains everything. Launchpad quizzes weekly, but they count for participation and not correctness. She also offers 2-4 bonus questions on every test, I have gotten an A on every exam.
If you need to take this class, you must take Dr. Vick!! I haven't opened my textbook all semester. I just go to every class, pay attention to what she writes down and what she says, and then study exactly that for the test. She throws in a couple of bonuses on each exam, drops your lowest test grade, and assigns weekly hw for completion points
Take her if you have the chance. Literally all you have to do is show up to every class and take notes and you'll get at the very least a C. I took her after having taken Moore and withdrawing and she was like an angel.
One of my favorite classes I've taken here! Her class structure is very simple; there are 3 exams, weekly quizzes, and a few group activities. The quizzes helped me learn the material and do well on the exams. She's very nice and she definitely loves what she studies, so I enjoyed her lectures a lot. Definitely take this class if you like plants!
I like that Prof Vick hand writes her notes during class, I find that easier to follow. The class is fairly easy, but one on one time with her means you'll find that she is extremely rude, like she doesn't have time for you which is just annoying. I don't like her as a person but the class is good, and I think she sounds like Pam from The Office.
Dr. Vick is amazing. Quizzes every Friday, 10 questions. 3 exams, not final. Her lectures were never boring. Go to class, do the group work (few assignments) and you will get an A. STUDY her notes, it is all on the test basically word for word.
Need to attend lectures. She draws everything out which def helps for memory. Studying the notes will get you a great grade. Tests are all MC. Definitely will try to take her again later.
Easy. The tests are really easy, and all of the homework assignments equal an exam grade. However, the lectures are both necessary and BORING. The tests are from her lectures (not from the textbook) and her voice is super monotonous. Easy A, just boring.
I was psyched out when I heard that Vick was rated such a low score and I went in scared but as I sat through the lectures and took the tests i realized that shes one of the best bio professors @ VCU she gives really easy bonus questions and has launchpad assignments that are just completion. If you get below a B you just didnt try...
she literally draws out everything on the board but that also means that you have to pay attention and write everything down bc she wont post the notes on BB. Also take note of what shes saying because it can help with explanation. Honestly if you go to class and study you won't have problems. I've heard shes not very kind during office hours.
I don't know why Professor Vick is rated so low on here. She's friendly and her lectures are interesting. Her exams aren't too entirely difficult either. Just study and show up and you should be fine.
Jaclyn Vick is a good professor and her lectures are interesting. She assigns homework on Launchpad and it's a great supplement for reviewing material and doing practice problems. Her exams are relatively easy as well and she posts study guides. Just show up to class, take notes, do the Launchpad assignments, and you'll be fine.
Worst professor I have had at this school so far. I come to every class and study daily and I still have only been able to achieve a B. She teaches class by writing on a piece of paper on the projector and doesn't have anything for the class online. Inaccessible outside class. She goes very fast and talks about her kids every 2 minutes. BEWARE!!!
Lectures are her reading notes and writing them down on an overhead projector. Not a bad teacher, sometimes she just vomits information at you for a whole class. Exams are mostly fill in the blank. Spelling counts. So you have to know the information cold. so no multiple question to see an answer that may jog your memory.
She is is very rude one on one no matter how polite/sweet/smart you are. She knows what she is talking about and can break it down really well. There are a lot of exams and attendance is not technically mandatory but if you don't go you'll be really far behind. Notes are very helpful
Show up to Vicks class and you will do well. All of her notes are drawn in front of you so it is not too fast paced. She cares about her students and will give you great advice to be more successful in her class during office hours. Pairing her notes with the E-book, you will get a high grade in this class as long as the effort is put forth.
She draws pictures for all her notes. Pretty much everything she writes out in the notes is a question on her tests, so just read the notes a couple times and make sure you understand it. She drops 1 test and used launchpad for online homework once a week. I loved her class.
She is the best prof. that I've had so far
Vick is so great!! Attendance isn't mandatory BUT she hand writes all her notes and does not post them on blackboard and her exams consist of everything that she puts in the notes, so make sure you go to class!! Also, make sure you do launchpad because its such an easy A and a grade booster. Exams are your notes!!!
Very easy class, her notes are very nice, she hand writes everything and draws out pictures. Her class has no attendance requirement but it is very helpful to come to class because she gives a lot of good information. If you take good notes and study them, her tests are very straightforward and not hard at all. Final exam was a piece of cake.
I would recommend this professor if you have to take bio 151. She explains everything so simply and handwritten. If you review your notes and go to si sessions you will pass. Sometimes she would go off topic and start talking about her children but she is a good professor overall.
Vick is a great professor, attendance isn't mandatory but all her notes in lecture are handwritten and she doesn't post them on blackboard. So, go to class! Test were always 50 questions with bonus question, very easy stuck to lecture material! also she drops the lowest test grade & homework weighs as much as a test but very easy!!
Show up to class and take the notes and you should pass
one of my favorite classes and professors. as long as you copy her notes down (which she literally writes/draws in front of you the entire class) and thoroughly study them before tests, you'll be fine. tests make up most of your grade but she drops 1 and completion hw is graded as another test (so pretty much 100% test grade).
I was uneasy to take this class cause of the mixed reviews on this website but I'm glad I did. You can tell she likes this subjects and always tries to make jokes. She goes fast through lecture so I would type your notes. Also, go to class! Not everything you need to know is on the powerpoints! A quiz every Friday that is very easy too, recommended
Dr. Vick is very a nice and fun professor. However, the lab was a LOT of material for being a 1-credit course. (I didn't take it along with the lecture). You need at least 3 hours of intense studying to learn the material properly for the first lab practical. I liked the lab, but it wasn't as much Botany/Medicinal applications as I was expecting.
Professor Vick is a really great professor. She draws lots of diagrams and the tests are the notes. Her notes make you understand the topics.
She teaches all the material with handwritten notes in class and only tests on the stuff we learned in class. Easy to get a good grade on her tests as long as you carefully review and basically memorize the notes. Her lectures are fun to listen to.
Take her class!!! The tests are only based on what she teaches in class. All her notes are handwritten, she does a really good job of explaining each topic this way.
handwrites notes and the test are based on those notes, drops one out of four exams, and very nice.
She barely offered any grades so if you don't do well with tests this class is very difficult, I studied for hours on end and my efforts were never reflected in the grades I received and her notes are very difficult to understand.
This teacher is by far the worst teacher i have ever had at VCU. She is unhelpful and does not want to do her job properly She didn't help when i had technical difficulties on the homework and let me get a failing grade because the website she uses didn't work properly for me. how is she a professor if she doesnt want to help the students.
How is she still a professor at vcu she is the most unhelp and uncaring professor.
Choose any other teacher she is the worst and her lectures are all over the place and doesn't add up with the test half the time
Worst class i have ever taken at VCU. The test are hard and the professor is not helpful at all even when you work your butt off
I have NO idea what these recent reviews are talking about lol. Her lectures are almost exactly what shows up on the test. Come to class, write the notes, and STUDY. She drops one test and we use labquest which is a free 60 points (we have a 2 week free trial, finish up everything within that time to not pay for it bc we don't use the textbook)
A really hard class and the professor is really nice at first but as the year progressed she wasn't willing to help to bring up your grade. Go into this class with alot of knowledge on the subject. Her test weren't that straight forward and there is no curve.
the whole class had horrible exam grades after we all suffered tirelessly studying for hours?? notes are hard to understand, and did not help or even acknowledge me when i tried to improve my grade
Homework is a joke, yet if you miss more than two weeks for any reason at all, no makeup is available. Other than the homework grade are her horrible tests, which she says are based off her lectures, but really leave you confused after studying her notes for weeks straight. I managed a B on ONE test because I got lucky.
She is not a bad teacher. She hand writes all her notes so if you do not come make sure to have a friend. Her tests were honestly the concepts of whatever she gave you on the notes. Launchpad is the "homework" for the class and I did all of them and she gave extra credit and it helped my grade a lot, so do all of them. She also drops one test grade
If you like a lecture that is uneventful and long, then this professor is for you. Most of all the lectures she remained sat in the front of the auditorium. Her notes were always awesome however, and wrote them out for you on the projector so you could make copies. The exams didn't really match the notes, so read the textbook although tedious.
Hard class If you really want that A you must independently study, read the textbook, go to tutoring, watch videos etc. What ever you have to do. It is definitely possible to do very well in this class if you put enough effort in it. Lectures are optional. Launchpad grade is averaged into your final grade and that should boost up you a letter grade
Vick was an easy teacher. She hand wrote her notes so you either had to show up or have a friend. Attendance was not mandatory but notes were not posted on blackboard. I never went to class other than the tests dates and passed with an A. My friends had her and I just took pictures of her notes and studied the day before the test. Easy class!
Don't understand why she gets bad reviews. If you show up to class & copy her notes almost exactly, or share notes w/ someone you will pass. There was minimal hw outside of class, just online txtbook quizzes that only count for participation, so easy A. The tests only cover exactly what she covers in class and lectures/notes are easy to understand.
Took her class when I had to retake Bio. She is easy, if you put in the work. She does have homework and attendance is not mandatory but I recommend going to class for notes. Her notes are handwritten and she explains as she goes. Her exams are based on her notes so if you understand them then it'll be an easy A. She drops one exam.
She literally reads off a PowerPoint and most of the stuff on the PowerPoint ARE NOT ON THE EXAM. The one lecture that was clear was when Dr. Smith had to fill in for one day. Dr. Vick does not explain what will be on the exam, her questions are very detailed and random. They are not explained in class nor on the lecture. Very independent.
Lectures tend to be very boring and she talks monotone. Even if you read the powerpoint slides, theres a lot of content you have to find on your own to get a good understanding of the material. Tests are straightforward, but only if you prepare for them a few days ahead. Plenty of opportunities to get extra credit if you go to preceptor sessions.
I regret not listening to the other ratings. She is extremely rude! (Not just to me but other students as well) she gets super annoyed any time you ask questions during class and consistently cancels her office hours. She clearly abhors her job and her life. She is proof that VCU does not care about our quality of education.
Took her for a summer class that lasted a month. All the tests were based on the notes she did in class, which she wrote herself and walked us through. she gave extra credit for completing all the homework which was due regularly. if you use basic memorization methods to study, pay attention, and do all the work it's an easy A.
I'm not sure what all the previous reviews are talking about. This was my first biology class since high school and she did an excellent job explaining the material. The fact that it was hand drawn notes meant that I could keep up and still listen to what she was saying. Her tests are based entirely off the notes, so show up, take notes, easy A.
Lets put it this way, she was a lovely lady, but when I told people that I took Cell with Vick, they would ALWAYS say "oh no sorry". People who have taken cell know not to take Vick for this class. If you think you can handle it, go ahead and try. However, if you are having any doubts after reading these reviews, go to Smith.
Vick is a good professor, although her lectures can be a bit dry. The class is really quite manageable as long as you take notes and attend SI sessions as needed. SI sessions and attendance can actually earn you a lot of extra credit!
Vick was amazing for 151, you HAVE to go to class if you want to do well. Taking good notes is a must, copy everything she says and writes down. strictly Study her notes for exams, I loved this class!
I really loved Professor Vick! She handwrites her notes which I really liked and it made the material stick better. She is really clear in her note taking, explains material well, and you must also write what she says! Tests are kinda hard but if you study her notes, you will do great!
She is a good teacher, but requires you to handwrite all notes. Also the tests had nothing to do with what was being taught in lecture so my exam scores didn't reflect on how I was learning at all. She did give opportunities for extra credit, but I wasn't a huge fan of the class.
She doesn't handwrite notes like she did for 151, so you will actually have to write your own notes. RECORD her lectures every class, STUDY them. You cannot cram content last minute since there's so much. Pretty easy to get an A if you put in the effort for it. They literally throw extra credit at you, get as many points as u can.
Although lectures are quite dense, everything that is on a test is straight from the lectures. Make sure to take good notes (they are not posted/she does not use powerpoints either). Of course when studying you will have a lot to try and memorize but thanks to her good notes and explanations I was able to land an A in the class :)
she handwrites her notes which is really helpful but means you are forced to come to class. somethings she says but doesn't write and she doesn't post any notes. launchpad homework that you could finish in the first week and not have to pay for it. go to SI and preceptor sessions!!! test is word for word from her notes but the best way to study
Wouldn't take this class again if my life depended on it. One of the rudest professors i've ever encountered. The class is for 1 credit and she will work you like its for 5. It is structured more like a plant anatomy course. EXTREMELY difficult to succeed. Tests are near impossible and she will roll her eyes if you ask her a question. GPA killer.
Half the lectures were by Dr. Vick, half by Dr. Smith. This empahsized Vick's weak points: passion, speaking, and clarity. Smith is much better in these. The tests were also terribly written: you will miss questions for being right or for not knowing material that wasn't taught. Otherwise, it's fine. Takes about 8 hours total for an average week.
Avoid at ALL costs. Lectures are poorly organized so you'll end up teaching yourself the material, the exams are nothing like the quizzes and you'll be asked questions on material you've never seen before (AND you'll have 50 minutes for 50 questions), and you're only graded on quizzes and exams. Maybe she's better in-person, but online was awful.
took it online, a horrible experience, avoid her at all costs. Maybe she teachers better in person, but online is horrendous. No extra credit, graded by tests only. Her online videos are posted from months ago which are super difficult to follow. Covers a lot in one video
Dr. Vick is a good professor. She handwrites all her notes which is a lot but, you just study your notes well and you will be fine.
I'm horrible at taking tests due to severe anxiety, and that's pretty much all you're graded on aside from 1 quiz for each test. You can also get extra credit but it does nothing for you if your test grades aren't good since they outweigh the EC. 50 minutes for 50 questions..... I had 0 time to check over my answers and rushed all the tests.
The class is only fifty minutes of it and every class, at least the first ten to fifteen minutes is wasted on her unpreparedness or preceptor mess. Attendance kinda useless because she speeds through the powerpoint so you have to review again on your own.
Mean to her preceptors and students
She needs to just stay as an asynchronous teacher. She was straight to the point in my Angiosperms course (online) and really enjoyed her teaching taking that, but this class just feels useless to go to. She goes through the lecture a mile a minute and does not record the lectures. You definitely need to go through the material on your own.
Whoever wrote the 5 star reviews were smoking crack, because she is easily one of the worst professors that I have ever had. If you ask any quick question that shouldn't take 10 seconds or less to answer, she coldly tells you to find the syllabus and check on there, which is inconvenient and very annoying. She's overall just a pain to deal with
Very unpreparing. In the beginning of the semester she warned us that the second exam is the hardest and gets the lowest average. Rather than preparing us extra hard to prevent this, she teaches us even less, and then judges us on why we got a low average. Very difficult to reach outside of class, would not recommend at all. Do the extra credit
I will admit that I struggled in this class because I did not go to the lectures. It is very important because the notes are ONLY given in lectures, they are not online. If you go to the lectures consistently than you will have little issues. In total, there were only about 6 total grades so do well on tests!
She reads off of her lecture slides pretty much verbatim. The only reason I attended class was for the extra credit, which saved my grade. Some questions on the test weren't in the lecture or it was something she mentioned in class for like 15 seconds. Has a very boring lecture and voice
Attendance is extra credit so do it because it will help your grade in the end! Her exams are trick questions, and she lectures horribly. If you can get another professor for this course please do so. The only reason I passed was that the extra credit saved me. The only grades you get are exams so do well.
I took this professor for a lecture and a lab. The class was very interesting, she did a great job explaining the material. You can't skip class she has surprise assignments. She is not the most understanding professor, and don't really care about excused absences. She also will not clearly answer questions through email.
Dr. Vick is straightforward in her lectures. Attendance is not mandatory but she gives out random activities that count as grades - these are easy and free points if you come to class. Quizzes every Friday that there's not a test. No cumulative tests or final exam. Just go to class because the class is really easy if you take good notes.
Prof. Vick is extremely sweet, kind, and enthusiastic about teaching and will answer all your questions outside of class. I personally just didn't like BIO 333, I just thought It was boring. We had an easy quiz every week, so DON'T FALL BEHIND!! Attend class!!! otherwise, it's a pretty easy and simple class for 3 credits.
Cell bio is truly nothing spectacular. It is a necessary class, and Dr Vick will get you through it pretty smoothly. The class is pretty fast paced, so be good about taking notes, but there are also many preceptor sessions if you need them. The exams basically ask if you can read a PowerPoint (not a criticism). You should do fine.
Course is based out of 500 points: 4 quizzes 25 points each (all open note, so easy 100's) 4 tests worth 100 points each, & an optional cumulative final that will drop the lowest test score if taken. TONS of extra credit for attendance, preceptor sessions, etc. You could easily not go to lecture & read the book, but it depends on how you are w/bio.
I definitely recommend taking this class it was very interesting and Dr. Vick is a great lecturer. It is an attainable A if you put in the work throughout the semester and take good notes during class, all tests and quizzes are based on the lectures. No textbook and no final. There are some group projects and a poster presentation!
She has changed her teaching style to Pearson PowerPoints. Dr. Vick is super nice and responds very fast to emails. Exams contain a lot of information and all are multiple choice. 4 out of 5 exams will count towards your grade.
I really enjoyed Medicinal Botany and would recommend this class if you want an easy A. She only tests on what she lectures and it is not difficult at all. She has quizzes, but if you do some light studying, it is really easy. Her tests are not hard either, just review her slides and take good notes. She is really nice.
Pay attention to lectures! Take good notes! If you study you should do well on exams, it's a lot to memorize so study ahead. Quizzes and in class assignments are easy points just pay attention to the previous lectures. She's really nice, so ask questions if you're confused. She drops one exam and your lowest assignment and quiz.
Exams make up you grade--> 4 out of 5. She is super smart and nice, pretty much can answer any question. Exams are MC and have 2 EC on them. Material can get dense but she doesn't put everything on the exam. DO THE HW!! This can really help you out in the end.
Go to class, don't get distracted, and take good notes. Lectures were straightforward and she highlighted certain concepts that will be tested on. Preceptor sessions were a great resource as well.
I'm gonna be honest, she doesn't know what she's lecturing on. She reads directly off the slides and couldn't answer even one question that students asked this semester. There is a lot of extra credit, but Dr. Smith offers all of the same resources and teaches efficiently and intelligently. Vick is also nasty over email and one-on-one situations!!
Dr. Vick's class is straight forward. Tests are on lecture and things said in class. My suggestion is to take notes beforehand and then jot down anything else she adds during lecture. Lots of chances for extra credit. Easy to get an A or B if you are willing to study.
Dr. Vick is a great teacher, she does one thing and it is teach, which it is my second time taking bio151 as I failed last semester but her teaching style and the workload is very balanced and easy to understand. The only things you need to do to get an A in the class is to do all the homework, and study the notes and understand the concept.
She heavily emphasizes showing up even though she doesn't take attendance, because her slides are somewhat vague and she really goes into detail during lectures. All homework is a completion grade and tests are very easy as long as you listen to the lectures and what she says is going to be on the test, go to the review sessions for extra credit!!
you dont even have to show up, everything for the semester is already posted on canvas
This professor provided a lot of extra credit opportunities to raise your grade. Test are very easy if you study. Definitely go to the SI sessions because they help a lot.
Dr. Vick is amazing! She is easy to reach outside of class and she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. The class is made up of 4 tests and quizzes and an OPTIONAL final. If you do well on the quizzes (online) and go to the extra credit preceptor sessions you should be able to pass but to get an A you need to do that and do well on the exams
Dr. Vicks syllabus is very clear and although her class is very lecture heavy, you can tell she tries her best to engage students. she gives extra credit and her tests are VERY straightforward. My advice is to study thoroughly. she never gets super specific about anything so as long as you get the gist you're fine.
The only point of showing up to lectures is to get extra credit for attendance, which was for 10-15 points overall. Reads straight from the slides, so you could also just teach yourself at home from them. One thing to be careful of is that you are expected to know specific drug names for certain things, which was so annoying for a cell class.
she is super condescending. Was hit by a car and hospitalized for days, no retakes on the quiz i missed. Her office hours are packed and she treats you like an inconvenience for being there. Maybe bc she holds knitting club in her tiny office during the only time she holds her student hours. super rude in emails too.
She's rude, and her grading doesn't make sense. Her tests are extremely difficult, and you really need to study hard to pass this course. The way she phrases her questions is often confusing. Overall, it's a challenging class, and you have to put in extra effort to keep up
Had her for bio 152 and bio 300. She is rude and she is very strict when it comes to grading. For cell biology, there are four tests plus a final. Since they are all weighted equally, the final becomes optional if you are okay with your grade. Attendance isn't needed, but she occasionally gives extra credit for specific days.
The only things that go into your grade are tests/quizzes, no hw. The quizzes are online/open note & tests are MCQ, so the class is easy from that standpoint. Just try not to skip too much or you will miss key test info as the slides are not very detailed. A lot of people don't vibe w/ her, if you just need to get through the class shes fine.
