Jake makes this class very enjoyable even though it's a GPA-killer. He's very passionate and caring for students.
Seriously such an entertaining lecturer who keeps class interesting. Very approachable and cares about the students doing well (even though it's a huge lecture). Don't be scared to ask questions!
He always creates comfortable atmosphere to ask in class. Keep the class interesting all the time. You learn new things every day in lectures. He will do polling and random call to answer his discussion questions. So reading is necessary.
He makes the class really fun and interesting. He's really funny and approachable and he makes participating in class much less stressful. One of my favorite professors of all time!! Take his class!!!
Cooper was always super engaging and respectful of students. His lecture style is very clear and he makes the class super interesting and fun. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN HE ROCKS!!
Dr. Cooper is truly an engaging lecturer. He is able to make seemingly boring topics into fun, and up beat lectures. The best part of all, I learn something new each time. Even though the grading is tough (especially if you don't use key words!), you get to learn the fundamentals of biology, and on top of that, how to have better study habits,
DR. COOPER IS THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR! He knows his material so well and teaches it in a way that is both fun and engaging. He makes a class of 700 feel like a class of 20. Go to his office hours, they are helpful and entertaining! He is such an inspiring professor and really cares about every student. Tests are killer but 10/10 take this class!
Solid professor. Lectures are extremely interesting. Bio 180 in itself is a tricky course just because the answers they are looking for on tests aren't always straightforward. Definitely do the study questions and stay on top of the readings so that the reading quizzes and polling questions come easily to you. Forming study groups is really helpful
eh. He's a great person, don't get me wrong. And he's a great lecturer. But you don't really learn that much in lecture. If you're not naturally good at biology, you prob won't do well in this class. Exams feel like a crapshoot. And this is from someone who average a 3.7 in the gen chem series. It's not really him that's the problem, it's bio 180.
Cooper is such an amazing professor even though its his first time teaching. His lectures are really engaging and you can tell he really cares about what he's teaching. His office hours are pretty helpful as you have the chance to ask more specific questions. Super down to earth, tests aren't that hard as long as you do the study questions and read
I can't believe that this was the first time Dr Cooper ever taught a class, he is one of the best lecturers I have ever had! Every single lecture was interesting and engaging, and he did an awesome job of making everyone feel good about themselves. I hope I get to take another class from him in the future.
Dr. Cooper is an amazing teacher and his lectures were always entertaining and informative. Be careful of test format and really pay attention to what they're asking for in the question. Other than that as long as you pay attention to what Cooper emphasizes you'll be solid.
This guy was really respectful of students and their time, and was always really entertaining to watch in our required-attendance class.
Dr. Cooper was wonderful. Apparently this quarter (Fall 2016) was his first quarter leading the class, and he did a great job. He was entertaining, the subject matter was interesting, and was well loved by everyone I've spoken too.
Just go to class and do the reading then you will pass. Really fun but needs some commitment.
I can't believe that Autumn 2016 was Dr. Cooper's first year teaching the class. It feels like he's been doing it forever. He knows the material super well and the class is definitely formatted for your success. He is an excellent speaker, explains material well, and is humorous. He will definitely hold your attention in lecture.
Loving him. I can't believe this is his first time teaching bio 180. He is doing great and I hope I can take his class again.
Fall 2016 was his first quarter teaching and he is amazing. He really cares about the well being of his students and he remembers them and with more that a thousand kids that is in itself a fantastic skill. The class is very lecture based and the book does not help too much but it is not a bad thing to have. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
Dr. Cooper is the best. Fall quarter 2016 is his first time teaching Biol 180 and he rocks. The lectures are interesting and he's pretty good at answering questions. However tests are hard,so you need to go to classes, because the tests are pretty lecture-based. There's also polling questions in class so participation is important.
Amazing Prof and knows his stuff! Lectures are amazing and very fun. Even though there are hundreds of people he makes you feel involved. A lot of online homework based off of the textbook reading (which are required if you want to pass). A lot of exams but they can be difficult. Overall, amazing Prof for this class.
I loved Dr. Cooper! He is an amazing teacher. He cares about his students and he tries to involve them in his lectures. He made the content very interesting and fun. I recommend him as a teacher. I personally struggled in this class because of the grading, since the TAs grade. As long as you put in time for office hours, you will do good.
Dr. Cooper is my favorite professor in UW! He is passionate and very caring. I enjoyed his lectures so much. He really knows his stuff and is always prepared to answer any question. It's really surprising that it was his first time teaching! I would definitely take his class again.
Dr. Cooper was awesome, his lectures are amazing, he conveys complicated topics with ease, He is a really nice guy, and has a really good voice.
He was the greatest bio professor I could have asked for. He really makes you think and apply your learning which is hard but worth it when you start seeing the world differently.
Great lecturer who cares about his subject and does a great job of making it interesting. Tests are difficult with odd grading criteria, but that is the nature of a 700 person class. Would recommend if you are a science major or you like science a lot.
Amazing professor, his lectures were very engaging, he's a funny guy and made the material interesting and clear to understand. He was very encouraging, and even made effort to learn student names in a lecture hall with hundreds. Tests are pretty difficult, and studying is a must, but if you apply yourself you should be able to get a decent grade.
The lectures were very interesting and overall the class was pretty interesting but the material can be pretty difficult to understand. He offered office hours and email for extra help and questions. Was very enthusiastic about the material, and excited to teach everyday.
Hands down the best professor I've had at UW. He really knows how to explain concepts clearly and connect with students. Expect to do a lot of reading to succeed in this class.
Dr. Cooper is one of the best professors I have had at UW. His lectures are fantastic, engaging and helped tremendously with my learning and understanding of the material. Exams are hard, but look for key words/ understanding of the material rather than just memorization. He is very approachable and I recommend him to anyone, he was great!
Dr. Cooper connects with the students very well and his lectures are super interesting. The class as a whole is extremely challenging because the teacher assistants who grade the exams demand that you are precise and concise. Lots of readings but the Biology textbook by Freeman is fascinating.
An amazing professor! He'll make you work for a good final grade, but he's passionate and willing to help at any time.
Loved him! He cares about how his students are feeling and tries to connect them in every way. Lectures are definitely worth going to and his personality is awesome! Exam grading may be tough but the overall concept of this class was super structural and I learned some great stuff! Recommend 100%
Dr. Cooper is the most caring, engaging, and respecting prof at UW yet. Class is mandatory, but fun with discussions, poll questions, and demonstrations. Reading quizzes every night which makes class more involved than other lecture courses. Labs are low stress group activities and short in lab reports that really help understanding.
Jake's the best, his lectures are engaging and entertaining, he's very approachable and always happy to talk to his students. Grading on the tests is super tough and even the best students get frustrated but if you pay attention and stay on top the of the readings the class is designed for success.
Biol 356 was the second class I've taken with Jake and it was probably the best decision I've made this year. I felt like I learned something new every lecture and the workload was very reasonable (The tests are way easier than 180). Also Jake brought the whole class Macaroons for Passover because he's the best.
This is my second class with Dr. Cooper and it was the best decision I made. I learned so much from his class. He's a genuinely caring and thoughtful person. Lectures are based on discussion, polling, and fascinating scientific studies. He's inspired me to study evolutionary biology. Best professor ever.
2nd class w/Dr. Cooper, and the fact that many raters here have taken from him before should tell you a lot. The average grades are higher than in bio 180, but the course is not easier because you can easily spend 3 hours trying to understand the details of primary literature. Enthusiastic & always answers questions. Best prof I've had at UW.
This processor is really awesome, great things is all that I have learned. I took bio after a long time and the material was also really new, but Dr. Cooper is really awesome at explaining and making his lectures the most wonderful lectures out there. The lectures are really engaging and get ready to be wowed and I would take it with him again.
Best lecturer in college yet! Engaging, interesting, inspirational. Expectations are very clear. Wish more professors would be like him.
HE IS THE BEST! If you can move your schedule around to take him then do it! His lectures are extremely interesting. Every time I feel like not being there, but his lectures made me feel glad that I was there. His expectations are very clear and his exams are straightforward nothing really tricky.
Dr Cooper was my favorite UW prof. He gives reading each night and weekly quizzes, which can be annoying, but if you pay attention to them you will 100% pass the tests. His lectures are very important to attend to succeed, but they are VERY fun. He also makes an effort to get to know you, and remembered me a quarter later when I saw him in HCK.
He is the best lecturer!!! He is smart, passionate, fun and he knows how to engage students in class. This is a hard class, but he brings out the interesting part of biology.
While I didn't like intro bio (it was mostly review for me), JAKE COOPER IS THE BEST. He's got a bit of a cult following at UW, and for good reason! He is so energetic, fun, caring, and effective at explaining material. He encourages class engagement and tries really hard to listen well to students' questions. I'd absolutely recommend him as a prof
Jacob's a great prof, really nice, great sense of humor, and most importantly caring. Won't lie, this class will challenge you, but personally I've enjoyed it so far. As well, Dr. Cooper's grading rubric spaces the grading out; quizzes, labs, poll questions, reading, etc. One bad quiz score or lab write up won't sink your grade. Take him.
Hilarious wholesome dude, &his lectures reflect that. Hands down best professor I've ever had in my 2yrs at UW! On the class itself, it's difficult but nothing compared to Chem 142 (Take chem first if you haven't already! Less trouble). Do hw! Labs are easy enough, but tests do require that you not only know the material but also how to apply it!
Unpopular opinion: while Jake is a great professor, the way he taught 354 was terrible. It was mostly taught in a group, he graded polling questions on correctness, and his test questions are unbelievably tough. He makes you think like a scientist, which is fine, but sucks when youre being graded for it and have no prior experience of it.
Probably my favourite professor at UW, he's a really nice guy, funny, and great at lecturing. Nothing in this course was worth a very high percent of your grade so it wasn't too stressful either, he has pretty reasonable expectations for the class.
To be honest, Jake is a really good professor. He tries to minimize stress in the classroom by grading lots of things (all under 15% each), but if you do poorly on quizzes you're not going to do great. He also is very, VERY, inspirational, to the point where if you ask a question, he says you're doubting yourself... :/
Jake Cooper is such a bomb teacher. He really makes each lecture engaging (idk how that's possible) and tries hard to motivate and inspire students. If you have the chance to take his class i'm sure you won't regret it.
Jake is a really amazing professor. I took his first offering of a game theory class through the Honors Program and it was so great. He constantly checked in with us to make sure everyone had a thorough understanding of the concepts discussed and he was very caring and had a good sense of humor. This was by far my favorite class and favorite prof
Dr. Cooper has been one of my favorite teachers at UW! Hilarious and topical lectures, with fascinating material every time. He is relatable and kind, great grader if you put in the effort. Clearly cares about his students' and their well being, but treats you like an adult. Would HIGHLY recommend! You won't regret it! Fascinating class, great prof
Dr. Cooper cares a lot about his students and gives very engaging lectures. In my experience, though, the content and grading of his game theory course is slightly more challenging than other HONORS classes. However, it was still a great experience and I highly recommend taking Dr. Cooper's classes.
Cooper is a cool dude but like any BIOL 180 class, the tests are absolutely insane. His tests tend to be worded in a very ambiguous manner with little clear instruction so regurgitate what he wants or you won't do very well. Lab is simple and gives you free points for the most part. His lectures can be very disorganized with many tangents as well.
Only time I've written a review before, and I'm not even in his department! Phenomenal lecturer. I agree on some of the other points about tests, they tend to ask questions that I consider unfair: even if you understand the concepts and how to apply them, you're made to decide on and defend a point that is sometimes arbitrary.
Definitely my favorite professor so far at UW. Unlike other professors that do the equivalent of reading PowerPoint slides for lecture, Dr. Cooper takes what we read from the textbook and explains in greater detail with good examples that make you really think. I love his sense of humor and he's a great lecturer, and puts a lot of effort in.
I love this man with my whole being. A fantastic and engaging lecturer, an uplifting and understanding mentor, and a all around wonderful human being. He and the rest of the teaching team handled the end of W20 with grace, even though they were SO stressed (obviously). Take his class. SO MUCH LOVE for Jake Cooper.
Prof Cooper is awesome! He is probably the best Bio prof you will ever have at UW. The class is very organized and the course material is relatively easy. They do daily polling, so you really do have to go to class, plus there are daily reading quizzes and weekly exams/practice exams. But overall, this is a great class!
Dr. Cooper is the best professor you will take at UW and the only reason BIOL 180 is tolerable. He is hilarious, extremely nice, and very good at his job; you'll come away with a quarter of knowledge that you didn't forget at all. His tests are extremely difficult, so be ready for that. Other than that, the class isn't much work.
Dr. Cooper's lectures are amazing. In a course that meets once a day for a majority of the week, I've never experience a stale lecture once! You can tell Dr. Cooper is extremely passionate about the course material and is even more passionate about his students learning. The tests are hard not gonna lie but man does he inspire his students.
Best professor and hardest exam. Love him and hate him. His lectures are so interesting and he really cares about training students to think like a scientist instead of to simply memorize everything. But his exams seem to be subjective (99% short answers) and it's hard to grasp what is "correct". Some reading quizzes don't match readings.
Jake Cooper is hands down the best lecturer I've ever had. He's kind, funny, and genuinely cares so much about his students. His lectures are never too fast, nor too slow; he never tries to cram things in the last few minutes of class, and he never gets behind his teaching schedule for the quarter. He is amazing both as a teacher and a person.
I WISH I COULD TAKE DR. COOPER FOR BIO 200! He is one of the funniest lectures Ive ever had. He always begins new topics with examples which I find is such a great way of learning because he really makes you think! I would take him again if I could because he was the most engaging professor Ive ever had! Study a lot!
While Dr. Cooper does his best to be engaging, I feel like his lectures could use more structure, as most of lecture time was spent giving us fun facts, and while they related to what we are learning, I know that I would have benefited from teaching more broadly. Also, he doesn't show grade percentages in canvas, so that sucks.
Cooper cares A LOT about his job. Almost too much. As a result, his class in general is weirdly personal. He makes u spill your hopes, fears, and insecurities in really corny writing homework assignments that I feel like he reads at night before he goes to bed. He answers piazza in like 30 seconds. His exams are pretty difficult like F/D averages
Absolute favorite professor at UW, taught in ways which were both traditional as well as innovative, I looked forward to going to lecture.
Easily the funniest and nicest professor I have ever had. His lectures are really interesting and surprisingly funny. The content is really interesting and the expectations for the class and homework load are very reasonable. I STRONGLY recommend taking his class!
Amazing professor in biology. He really motivates students to learn and understand the concepts important to become a scientist. He puts in so much effort in class to make them interesting to think about. Tests were quite challenging, but for the things you learn, it is definitely worth it. Take classes with Dr. Cooper, you won't regret it!!
Professor Cooper really cares about the learning aspect of the course. The lectures are interesting and engaging. If you get the opportunity to have professor Cooper, you definitely should.
Solid choice. Definitely stands out from other STEM profs because he shows genuine care for his students' success and generally keep lectures interesting. Exams are kind of tough, but that's true for any STEM class. Fun to listen to, never condescending. His class definitely gave me more hope in finding success in science courses at UW.
cares about leveling out the playing field as evenly as possible for all students, really tough exams but your best bet is familiarizing yourself with as many potential dilemmas as possible and digging deep into understanding each presented concept
Cooper is satirical and ostentatious. While seemingly caring about his students, he believes himself and his instructor team holds the invariable truth to all questions. Inefficient virtual lecturing isn't his fault but I readily learned nothing more than an affectation of common senses spoken in biology jargon in this poorly administered class.
took online in summer 2020. There's readings, reading quizzes, pre-recorded lectures & lecture questions. Seems like a lot but once you establish a routine it's not bad. Lectures are short, simple, & easy to understand. Readings go more in depth (helpful). U can earn full credit on every practice exam by reflecting on mistakes. Real exams r tougher
Cooper is ok. He's a decent lecturer, but his instructional team definitely did not know how to run an online class. A lot of his exams were very well written, but there was widespread variance in the grading. Overall, the course could have been organized better, but Cooper wasn't terrible. 180 is a weeder, so online or not, they can't make it easy
Dr. Cooper is hands down the best professor I've had at UW. He's funny and kind and goes out of his way to make class enjoyable. It's also clear that he wants all of his students to succeed. Office hours were super helpful and tests required some critical thinking but weren't that hard as long as you studied.
Prof. Cooper truly wants his students to succeed. I took his online bio course and his lectures were easy to follow and the course was well organized. Would definitely take his class again if I could. Exams were flexible and considerate of students despite being challenging (still realistic).
Dr. Cooper is hands down the best professor Ive ever had. He teaches with great enthusiasm, which makes the lectures 100x better to sit though. He encouraged open communication and always listened and considered students concerns and suggestions regarding the course structure and workload. All around a remarkable professor.
I hate chemistry, those hard subjects, etc., but he made biology one of my favorite subjects, he was an awesome professor and makes biology so interesting and easy to understand. He doesn't use unnecessary words, speaks clearly and concisely. Cares more that you learn the material well than do busy work earn "the grade".
I'd give him a 6/5 if I could. He's easily the most supportive, friendly, and understanding prof I've ever had at UW. He regularly goes the extra mile to make sure you understand the topic, always give feedback on assignments and his focus is for you to learn, not to test you. You would make a mistake by not taking him.
I had an AWESOME experience in Cooper's class. He is a sweet guy who will go to great lengths to make sure students succeed. Online, be ready to advocate for yourself and ask for help if you need it- it could be easy to get lost in an online class. Would definitely recommend Cooper.
Very caring professor, he made recorded lectures very interesting.
Jake is my fav prof at UW. He is so funny in lecture and has a very interesting and unique teaching style. The exams were on par with your normal biology exams so they were hard but nothing crazy. He is so understanding and accommodating you can tell that he really cares about his students and genuinely loves to teach. Can't say enough good things!
Jake is probably the best prof I've ever had. He really emphasizes learning and understanding concepts over just getting a grade, and makes lectures fun and engaging while still being informative. He is also very supportive and accommodating to students needs. Can't say enough good things about him, definitely take him if you can :)
This has been my favorite class at UW so far. Professor Cooper provides numerous studies to help explain the Game Theory concepts, which are very relevant to everyday life. His lectures were super fun and engaging and having everyday group work allowed me to actually meet other people in the class. Would highly recommend taking this Honors course!
Favorite course & teacher so far at UW. Makes everyone feel valued and just radiates joy and passion. He has that cool uncle vibe and a great sense of humor. Class is super interesting and the elegance of the topics kept blowing my mind.
Loved taking Bio 180 with him, his lectures were always well done and you could tell that he cares about every student's learning experience. Would highly recommend, favorite UW professor so far.
i love this man
One of my favorite, if not my favorite professors at UW. I took BIO 180 with him at Friday Harbor Labs so it was pretty different from the giant lectures on main campus. Regardless, Dr. Cooper was super accommodating, engaging, and funny. Take BIO 180 with him and you'll have a great time!!
Genuinely the best teacher I have ever had.. Jake genuinely cares about you, and about you learning. Outside of the class, Jake was always ready to help you learn more. Learning with Jake was a wonderful experience that I will always remember. Jakes Bio Lecture forever. Beef for life.
definitely the best prof I have had so far at UW. Exams are not easy or hard. My man is very passionate and super nice. Very clear to understand. Too bad couldn't take him for bio 200. There I got the worst prof so far, which had super boring and confusing lectures.
Jake is awesome. Truly cares about what's being taught and about how well students are doing. The lectures were mainly example-based rather than material, so it was important to do the reading before class or I was lost. As a result, the tests were super similar to lectures in that they were examples or case studies. Love love love jake!
This is one of the best professors I have ever met. His classes were great and always kept my focus, I learned a lot.
This is one of the best professors you can take at UW. Took bio180 at FHL and he made it such a good experience. Learned a lot, I just suck at bio so didn't do great on the 3 exams throughout the quarter. But he still helped me pass, great human
One of the best professors I've ever had at UW. Professor Cooper has a great talent for conveying the most important ideas in a very concise and engaging way.
Absolutely phenomenal professor, I had him for 180 and loved him so much that I took 354 with him as well! He's incredibly engaging and kind, one of the best professors I have had here. I'd take another class taught by him in a heartbeat
I took 220 when it was his first quarter teaching. Intellectually, class was easy. However, exam writing and grading were written like he was teaching 180 again. Questions were too open-ended but looking for specific topics/wording/phrases when he did not ask for them. When taking exams, expect to try to read his mind on free response questions.
Dr. Cooper is such an amazing professor, highly recommend any of their classes!
This was Dr. Cooper's first time teaching Bio 220, so although I wish we had more practice problems, he tried his best. Time went by so quickly in this class because his lectures were always engaging. Also, you can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and tries to grade as fairly as possible. Overall, this was a great class to be in.
Cooper does really care about Bio, but I don't think he cares as much about his students. It is not that difficult to do well if you put time in, but some test questions are graded very questionably. When I got marked wrong for questions and brought textbook evidence for my answer, I was told it was just wrong. It says it in the textbook so idk.
Put an incredible amount of effort into lectures and listening to students. Class was enjoyable and I look up to him as a prof. However, the exams were hard to prepare for, difficult, and graded somewhat questionably. Since it's their first time teaching 220, we did not get any practice questions, but future quarters will probably have it easier.
Dr. Cooper was so engaging and clearly cared so much about biology and his students. This was his first time teaching this course and he did as much as he could to make it fair, organized, and a reasonable amt of work for us. Test grading was a little questionable/picky sometimes but overall not bad. Just review lecture slides and you'll be set.
By far my favorite biology professor so far. Very excitable and passionate and easy to engage with in lectures. Funny and the tests are graded pretty fairly, not so much like BIOL 180 because there's a little bit more wiggle room and as long as you're able to apply concept logic you can do pretty good. Highly encouraging and positive as a teacher.
Not as easy as BIOL180 but Dr. Cooper has made this quarter so much more bearable. I like his lecture style the most out of all bio classes I have taken. He keeps it interesting but is also so reasonable. Tests are slightly difficult but you get the hang of them and partial credit is forgiving. Dr. Cooper enjoys his job and cares for his students.
Best prof I've had in 2 years. He makes lectures interesting and despite this being one of his first quarters teaching BIOL 220, he was flexible and even went through and remade blank versions of slides for people who take notes. The practice exams were short but relevant and useful. You can tell he loves physiology and connecting with students.
Dr. Cooper is probably the best professor I have had so far. The lectures are mandatory, but they are incredibly helpful and his style of teaching really helped me learn and understand the material. As long as you pay attention in lecture, you should be set. He also grades very fairly and partial credit is given pretty generously.
Best biology prof. I ve had so far, amazing lectures with examples, practices, and discussions, which is a lot better compared to most other classes of similar size (physics 1xx, chem 1xx). He also gives easy to understand explanations to complicated topics. Getting a good grade in his class encouraged me to continue in Bio major. 10/10 recommend.
Amazing professor. May have less practice materials than other professors but he has only been teaching this course for a short amount of time. Pay attention to lecture content (exams were pretty much whatever was covered in lecture). I appreciated Cooper because he kept it within the scope of the class and made sure we didn't need to memorize.
Dr. Cooper is the best professor I've had during my 2 years at UW. The lectures were engaging and the tests were graded with generous partial credit. It's clear how passionate they are about their job and how much effort they put into this course. If you have the chance to take a class with Dr. Cooper, do it!!
Jake is easily the best professor I've had thus far and I honestly doubt I'll ever have a professor as good as him ever again. He made his lectures incredibly interesting and relatable, and I learned a ton in his class. It's clear how much effort he put into teaching this class and how much he cares about his students. 100/10 would recommend.
Dr. Cooper was by far the best professor I've had at UW so far. The content was still a bit hard, but he broke things down and made the lectures entertaining, plus there were plenty of drops for labs, homework, and one exam drop that included the final. Dr. Cooper makes it clear that he cares about his students and wants us to succeed.
how many letters are there in 'dr. cooper'
Dr. Cooper was alright. He did give a good amount of drops for exams/homework/labs/attendance, but his lectures weren't super engaging. I did learn and understand it for the most part, but there were just so many "discuss with your neighbour" stuff that it's hard to follow his lectures, which were sometimes too vague too.
Took Him Summer Quarter & was the best decision I made Prof and TA were amazing. They were encouraging and cared about you. Lec was a lot of discussion and poll everywhere but in a good way. If you review lec and do the study questions the exams will be fine nothing to stress about. There are drops so if you feel sick it's okay. Take Him If you can
Take him. He is amazing. Not only you will enjoy going to the lectures, you will actually learn so much from it. I personally enjoyed it so much that I got really good grade!
Uses scientific approaches to improve quality of lectures and is always trying to maximize learning over plain memorization. Incredibly caring and approachable, take his class!
Jake is a very understanding professor and enjoys the topics he teaches in this course. Most, if not all, of the material I had never learned before, which made the quizzes challenging, but his practice exams are helpful. There is one project that had a tough grading rubric, but is manageable. Overall, I would recommend this course!
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD!! Dr. Cooper makes lectures extremely engaging to the point where class time flies so quickly. He breaks tough concepts down and simplifies them to make them more understandable. Plus, he connects with students more than most professors. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Amazing prof for sure. HIS EXAMS omg is vein of my existence. His exams are so much more vague than any other professor. "Suppose I snap my finger and your O2 in lung magically turns into N2" LIKE WDYM?? But I love him cus he is caring and best bio prof for sure. SO hard to get good grade (90-100) due to lack of practice exams.
Took Dr. Cooper for 180 & 220--you know how you can just tell that a professor loves *teaching*? That's Dr. Cooper, his lectures are so engaging and hilarious. The exams are frustrating since so many questions are vague and you kind of have to read the exam maker's mind. Other than that, I want to major in biology physiology 'cause of him
I actually enjoy to his lectures because he teaches in an engaging and funny way. Really makes you feel accommodated for and makes everyone feel seen in a big class. Good at helping you understand concepts and I think the test questions are honestly fine, mostly easy to understand, and he will give back test points sometimes and values effort.
I don't know why the ratings are so good. Yea he's a good professor and very sweet but you are set up for failure with those exams with the averages at 60-65 percent you're lucky to 3.0.
Lectures are AMAZING, he's a great public speaker. But, I talked to a TA and Cooper decided to remove most of the practice problems available 4 us in his curriculum, so there's only q's he made available. We only end up getting 8-10 practice problems PER exam. Learning is problem solving. There's NO practice for his exams, ydk what to expect at all
Dr. Cooper is very likable and engaging but his tests suck. It's very unclear what content from the slides he actually tests you on, there are few practice problems, and he goes very big-picture when talking but is very detail-heavy on tests. Also, his exams have the same issue as other bio series and focus too much on keywords and not concepts.
Cooper might seem like a nice guy but he is honestly the worst professor I have had at uw. His tests are worth 65% of your grade and he makes up questions that are so weird to the level where you start to rethink your life. He barely provides any practice questions for them too. Honestly recommend waiting and taking the course with someone else.
Had Jake for 180 which was amazing but 220 felt more harder because of the concepts, had HWs not RQs and we barely had practice problems and if we did they weren't really relevant to content and quite vague this time. Questions were interesting always a fish in the questions rather than humans concept so alot of it is applying to different systems.
I had Dr. Cooper for both BIO 220 and 359, and he was an excellent professor! He does a great job at breaking down the material to make it easier to understand. You can tell he is very passionate about what he does and cares about your success. As long as you keep up with the assignments and attend lecture, you will be fine.
Super nice guy and fun engaging lectures, but really bad tests. Vague questions and he expects you to be able to fish out what answer he's looking for. It's really difficult to do well on the tests even if you feel very confident in the material.
Nice guy & great lecturer but tests were awful. Vague questions with unfairly specific rubric criteria, impossible to get full credit. Tests don't reflect material, feels like solving a riddle & stubborn with regrades. Content is cool but this class made me question my interest in science. Be prepared to study super hard and do mediocre at best.
Cooper was enthusiastic, but exams always had questions that would be incredibly difficult to answer no matter how much work you put in. This makes it difficult for people who put in lots of work to get a 4.0 - Most people will be stuck right below. I watched every lecture over again to take notes and studied countless hours but ended with a 3.9.
Dr. Cooper is without-a-doubt my favorite teacher at UW. He's fun, compassionate, chill, inspirational, & overall has great vibes and teaches very well. He is always available after class to speak to. Some of his exam questions are tricky as they require applying learned material to various real-world situations. Overall though, he's SO worth it.
Cooper is by far my favorite teacher at UW. He is compassionate, funny, respectful, has great vibes, and excellent at teaching. He is always available to speak with after class and earnestly cares about each student. Some exam Qs were tricky as they applied material to unexpected situations. But overall, he is SO worth it. (And he adores sharks!)
Dr. Cooper is such an amazing professor. You can tell that he loves the subject and genuinely cares for his students. His lectures are incredible engaging. His tests are difficult, yes, but once you get used to his style of questions (mostly applying knowledge rather than memorising things), it's definitely doable. Oh and go to office hours!
He teaches on niche scenarios and doesn't explain broader concepts and then tests on other niche scenarios that have nothing to do with either. You get graded on how well you can read his mind. He puts out four poorly worded practice questions. This class is impossible, and I did well in 180 and 200, I am not fluent in mind reading.
STELLAR PROFESSOR. He clearly wants students to learn and puts SO MUCH effort into his lectures. He uses lecture slide animations and cool biology studies to engage students and keep bio interesting. And his explanations for everything are IMPRESSIVELY clear. Yes, some test qs can be tricky, but they are fair (similar difficulty to the practice).
Honestly I'm not sure why people hype him up. His lectures are pretty bad and he rants too much. I often rewatch lectures to understand material better, each lecture only has 25 minutes of actual content, if attendance wasn't graded I wouldn't go. He doesn't care about technical issues, fully wouldn't give me credit for days I was there.
hall of fame professor. maybe the greatest to ever touch the game. focus on really deep conceptual / systematic understanding instead of pure memorization and you'll do good on his tests. you should know every detail of every system you learned and understand WHY changing each individual variable affects / doesn't affect others. highly recommend.
Prof. Cooper is very caring and passionate about biology. He has clear grading criteria and is overall a really pleasant and pleasant person who ties in real data from papers and experts in his lecture. The content feels so much richer as a result and his exams and grading criteria are extremely fair. EASILY best bio prof ever.
Jacob is my favorite professor in the basic biology series. He has a very strong sense of empathy and a reassuring academic style. His exam leans more towards applying the concept of learning in situations similar to the examples given in class. He is very friendly and patient. He is a very, very nice person.
Greatest professor I have ever had or will ever have. Outstanding in every way that a professor can be measured. Anybody who speaks ill of Jacob Cooper in any capacity is an enemy of me personally.
Dr. Cooper is one of those professors that you take in college once and remember for years after. He's a genuinely caring, bright guy who goes above and beyond in so many little ways. Yes, I was annoyed that his class didn't round on 0.5% like Crowe's Bio 200, but I did really love lecture. He gave everyone shark temporary tattoos on the last day:)
Best bio class I've taken and imo much easier than 180 and 200 and I want to say it's because of Cooper. He cares a lot and it enthusiastic without it being over the top or annoying. I really like how exams are graded because if you have the right thought process you get credit, so they are graded pretty leniently. Highly recommend him as a prof.
Jake is an amazing lecturer, he's charismatic, knowledgeable, and very human. I'd absolutely recommend taking a course with him, he does all that he is able to make the class accessible! He makes concepts digestible. Some exam questions are poorly written truthfully and are nothing like other Biol exams in the series.
Cooper's tests are very hard. That said, he's such an incredible professor that it more than makes up for it. Knowledgeable, funny, passionate, cares deeply about his students. Excellent lecturer, and very willing to explain things differently if you don't understand. I wish every college prof were Jacob Cooper, one of my favorites I've had.
Jacob Cooper's class was one of my favorite classes I've taken at the school. Bio 220 was a requirement for my major, but he made class fun and interesting while simultaneously informative. Homework as a small review before going to class was a very nice approach, and the work load for the class was reasonable.
I went into the class thinking it would be the easiest of the intro series, but it was honestly the hardest. Every exam question felt like a trick question, and I don't think my grade reflected my understanding of the material. That said, I did enjoy the content, but the class structure was not my favorite.
Update: I actually ended up doing fine in his class, but omg it stressed me out so bad. Cooper has really hard tests, & I feel like he didnt accept my alternate explanations until later in the quarter. He is an AMAZING lecturer who makes sure his students have good understanding and feel cared for. Ultimately though, if good grades are hard, I hate
An absolute gem of a professor. Cares deeply about his students' learning and about the topics he's teaching. Lectures are super engaging. Exams can be challenging but if you thoroughly understand the material they're doable, especially since he awards the occasional bonus point.
best sharky prof but bit difficult
My favorite professor ever!! If you get a chance, take a class from him. He's such a quirky guy and he makes learning so interesting and fun.
This is by far one of the most engaging professors I have taken at this school. His lectures are genuinely entertaining, and he's a very friendly and fair professor. If you get the chance to take a class of his, take it
Nice and funny!
if the phrase "pick me" was a professor. no further comment
Professor Jake and this class were lots of fun. You really do learn a lot about the content and the class is set up in a way where learning the content is actually enjoyable. But, the class does focus a lot on participation and things like polling and scratchoffs were weighed very heavily and do not leave any room for error.
