Could possibly be the coolest professor... EVER.

extremely helpful on essays and always willing to meet. Grades fairly if you try. He's a little confusing, but tries to make the essays and prompts clear for everyone. Gets mad if you talk or text in class, but doesn't care if you zone out. Cool guy.

A great man. Super friendly and helpful. His views on art and writing are really interesting. Listening to him speak about writing is inspiring. You should take any creative writing class he teaches. Seriously.

Great teacher! Very knowledgeable and very helpful. He enjoys class discussions and several classes consisted of just talking about random stuff. Your writing will certainly improve after taking this course as well.

Jake is a pretty cool guy. Awesome sense of humor and is relatively laid back. He really enjoys it when the class discussions get going, and he's always willing to help with your paper. He is somewhat of a tough grader, but if you show insight and original thought, he's pretty much amazing.

Took his class at TCC. Mr Henson was so helpful in explaining everything. He's really funny and makes writing papers interesting. I loved his class. Cool guy. Would recommend taking any class he's teaching.

I took this class because it's required for my degree. I wasn't really looking forward to it. Boring emails and resumes, reports and more writing. But Jake's sense of humor and love of teaching made even the most lame work fun and interesting. It's really refreshing to have a teacher like him. The highest of recomendations. He's even cute ;)

He is a really cool guy. Tells you what he expects and is very clear. You have to try hard to not get a good grade, literally. The only thing that is a little annoying is that he is monotoned.

This guy is wonderful.

He's a pretty chill guy but a tough grader. He WILL help you improve your writing though and if your work shows improvement, you will probably get a good grade. I would highly recommend if you want to get better at writing but not if you want an easy ENC1102 credit.

Jake is an awesome teacher and professor. Really interesting to talk to in and out of the class. He's a tough grader but if you show improvement, actually give insight and participate, you'll pass with a good grade. Take him and you won't be sorry. He makes ENC classes interesting!

This guy is a majestic animal of dry comedy and oddly sincere for a required class. He is a slow grader - but it was clear from the start that this class was about learning and not grades. Do the work - get the grade. Learn cool stuff and have fun. Highly recommend. Badass over here.

One of the best professors at FAU. Really helps improve your writing, and gives great feedback. Does peer reviews of work in class. We did one solo project and 2 group projects. Really interesting to talk to, and you can tell he has a passion for writing. He has a great sense of humor, and is super cute to boot. :]

Awesome teacher. You can tell he likes what he is doing. I hate writing papers and I suck at it, thought I would hate this class but he seems really nice. Plus, it doesn't hurt that a girl has eye candy while in class.

Henson is the man! He is truly an amazing guy. He makes sure his students understand the essay topic and moves at a well pace with the assignments giving you time to write them and think it thoroughly. The only bad thing is he's a very slow grader. The semester is almost over and we have only gotten 25 papers back. He is hilarious and nice.

Henson is extremely nice and funny and tries to relate to his students as much as he can. When he lectures its to make sure everyone understands the topic and also gives tips on how to better your writing. His feedback is super detailed which personally helped me a lot in figuring out my mistakes & how to avoid them on the next paper. I recommend!!

He's super funny. Really makes the class bearable and interesting. One of my favorite instructors at FAU. The stories you read are also interesting. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory but you don't want to miss the discussions or you'll be in the dark when it comes to writing your papers.

I took Henson for interpertation of fiction. One of the best classes I've ever had. He's funny. He's crazy smart. He likes to hear what students have to say. He grades fairly. I feel like I didn't really know how to read before this class.

The reading is easy and he is good at explaining how to analyze a piece for writing papers. Lectures get long if you don't participate. He really wants students to participate in discussion. Takes a reeeeeeally long time to grade things, a problem when you want feedback on papers, but if you go to office hours, he'll help you.

This professor is seriously amazing. I would definitely take this class again just for the fun of it! Easiest grader ever. Helps you out with the essays by giving you lots of helpful information during class. The only thing is that he doesn't reply to emails very much. I've sent him 7 and he only replied to 1 so if you need help, talk to him 1 on1

Jake is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Creative Writing can be intimidating. I was planning to drop the course as soon as I read the syllabus because of the workshops. It is scary but Jake makes the setting a lot more comfortable. He is extremely helpful and laid back. I wish he taught more classes that I could take. The best!!

Total of 4 papers throughout the semester. Very simple. Not much thinking involved just do outlines for each paper and you are set with at least a B in the class. And then show up for class every time and thats just a plus. So, I would highly recommend him for ENC 1101. Not strict on attendance at all. He is hilarious. Dry humor. Amusing!!

Dude is super chill and down-to-earth. He has a dry sense of humor, easy to get along with. Do the readings (for the quizzes and reader responses) and the essays and you'll be fine. The books are cheap, even more so if you buy 'em digitally like on Kindle. Nothing better than a low-stress class that's easy on the wallet.

He was a great reader, and he did actually help teach how to interpret literature. His grading is kinda tough, I never got anything more with a "check plus" which i guess was kinda an A-, either way I got away with an A-, and he does give a lot of time in between papers. The readings were interesting and he was a nice guy, I would take again

Very young professor. He's really funny, and definitely relates to a college student because of his age. You don't necessarily have to go to class, but definitely let him know you won't be there so you can turn in your papers. He's a little confusing when it comes to course description, but by far one of my favorite professors so far.

I LOVED his class! He's young, fun, and really inspires his students to WANT to write. You will be writing a lot this semester, (4 original poems and a 10 pg short story) BUT it was so worth it because you will truly better yourself as a writer. Lots of reading, but its all good stuff. He's so funny and really makes his class easy to attend.

Bottom line: He's a great professor and actually cares about what you write! Don't BS your poems though. Amazing personality and babbles a little, overall WIN.

I am a terrible writer but I did very well in Jake's class because he is very clear on what he wants in the papers. He gives an outline which is very helpful and discuss the short stories or books in great detail and proposes many different theories on the pieces which helps when you are not very good at interpreting fictions. Overall he is GREAT!

He's an overall intelligent and interesting person. Good insights on the reading material. Uses specific techniques (including color coding samples of student work) that will actually improve your writing. Good class to take if critical analysis isn't your strong suit and you'd like to improve, but isn't uninteresting if you are already good at it.

Henson is a super chill guy. Easy to work with. The lectures are more fun when people talk, but you can tell he likes what he's doing. Can be funny and it's always interesting. Easy to talk to. Papers take a while to get back, but lots of feedback. Just go to his office hours. Take him if you can. Easy grade if you're not an idiot.

Wonderful class! Very discussion based and a lot of reading. Would take his class again. There was 3 papers and a final. a few small assignments here and there. Participation and reading are key to passing.

Mr. Henson is the best possible professor. He's incredibly smart. He's very kind. He's very clear. The texts we read were difficulty, but really changed my mind about reading. His lecture style is super engaging and funny. Take him for any english course you need!

This was probably one of the most important classes for my major and Henson delivered more in six weeks than I've learned in most of the classes I've taken combined. Heavy ideas, but he helps everyone understand. A great professor. I'd take any class he is teaching.

Professor Henson is one of the best professors in the English department at FAU. His instruction is informative and engaging, he makes the atmosphere of the classroom feel safe when in the midst of a workshop, and provides excellent feedback on writing assignments. He is understanding and helpful when you do not understand something, take him!!

Amazing professor. You wont succeed in his class if you give minimal effort and dont show up. He is funny, has AMAZING discussions, gives great feedback, teaches very helpful techniques, encourages growth and is overall a great guy to listen to. Very knowledgeable and encourages disagreement. Would take again in a heartbeat.

All assignments are meant to give you experience you will likely carry with you deep into your professional career. Some public speaking, but he helps you prepare for it alot and puts those who hate public speaking (like me) at ease with a few tips and tricks. Feedback is great! I think it's impossible to get less than a 90.

Professor Henson was honestly one of the nicest teachers/professors that Ive ever had. He shows that he cares about your grade and wants to make sure that you will pass. I always went to his office hours and he would always look over my paper and give me great feedback. As long as he sees that you are making a strong effort, you will pass.

Overall, just an amazing professor and person. Super hilarious, witty, and smart. He knows how to keep the class entertained while teaching about the topic/book. One of my favorite professors at FAU.

Very good professor. Really nice and goes through the poems and interprets them as you participate. Wrote 2 or 3 papers, not much. & allows you to write one page papers for extra credit!

He's honestly a great prof. His lectures are both funny and insightful. He tells you exactly what he wants in the essays. If you go to his office hours he tells you what to fix and exactly how to fix it! Honestly a great human as well

Awesome Professor! We had 3 essays which were graded, and four 1 page reading responses which he gave full credit for just as long as you turned it in. Just make sure you read the assigned readings before coming to class and your golden. Henson made picking out a topic and forming your paper really easy thanks to his informative lectures.

If you're reading this, you're probably considering taking him for a class.. and well i tell you to DO IT! He's one of the best teaches that I've had at FAU. Never cared for literature until him because of his amazing lectures! The books we had to read have inspired me in so many ways.. TAKE HIM and you'll see for yourself how amazing he is :)

Henson is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's really laid back but don't let that fool you into thinking he doesn't know his stuff. When he lectures, he dissects the pieces and helps you to be able to identify thematic elements and readings for the piece. He is very accessible and willing to help so go to office hours before submitting!!

Jake was super lenient and was flexible with the schedule he had posted on the syllabus. My class ended up only writing 3 full papers (4-5 pages) and the third paper was our final exam. He canceled our actual final. He gives a lot of time to complete everything and you know the schedule ahead of time. There are required reading for every class.

Professor Henson was really kind and always emailed back fast. The course is not difficult at all and is really helpful because we will use this material in our future careers. He gives really good feedback on assignments but took a really long time to grade assignments. I would definitely recommend him!

This professor was a really great guy. I attended a few in person classes and some online. He really cares about his students and is very understanding. He has a draft due every Friday and discussions/peer reviews on Tuesdays. EX: Read this excerpt: analyze. Following week: Thesis rough draft. Following week: Paper draft...

Professor Henson (he'll probably tell you to call him Jake) is a really dope professor. He really made me appreciate fiction which is truly an accomplishment because I never like English or Literature before this class. He's really chill, funny, and knows what he's doing and made the class an overall great experience.

My favorite professor so far at FAU. He is extremely understanding and caring and is genuinely a good person. He is very flexible and will work with you to make sure that you succeed. I highly recommend taking this professor.

Very down to earth professor

You get about 4 essays during the semester, each of which he gives plenty of time for you to draft and revise. If you put in the effort, you'll almost certainly get an A+ in this class. Henson is a funny and understanding professor as well, and he is willing to work with you if you aren't able to meet the deadlines. Overall, he's pretty great guy!

Had him for two classes now and would take him again. Really funny professor. Love his energy. Clearly cares about his students. Workload isn't super heavy and reading schedule has been slow to medium paced. A reasonable amount of assignments. He gives good feedback. Would definitely recommend taking one of his classes.

He is a very respected teacher, his lectures are awesome, he's very funny. He definitely gives you an idea of what your paper should look like to make it easier for you, trust me it has helped a lot. I hate writing so the class itself was kind of hard for me, but compared to other teachers, he was really good, and he's not strict with deadlines.

Professor Henson is very great in ENC1102. He is extremely helpful and makes it very clear what he is looking for in the papers. Just show up to class and follow the directions given, you will do fine.

I took Dr. Henson back in fall and he was amazing. He's very understanding about his student's lives and is willing to push back due dates if you need it, or if he hasn't finished grading your essay. Please participate in class because Dr. Henson is a very funny and interesting guy. If you can take him for any other required writing classes do it!

Professor Henson was hands down the best teachers I've had at FAU. His class was extremely enjoyable and the poems we would read were always entertaining. At first, some were difficult to understand, but once you do understand them, they were insane. I would take this class every over and over again if I could. W Teacher!

Took him for Creative Writing during the summer. You'll learn a lot from his lectures and the workshops you do. He'll help you get out of your comfort zone and try to participate just a little in the class. He can be pretty entertaining too, and encourages you to speak your mind. Take his class if you can!

He is an amazing teacher, you just have to read short stories before every class and you discuss it in class. few short essays with two 1000 words essay, take him if you could. this class passes as a WAC course.

He is a friendly professor. He is good at working with students when it comes to pushing back deadlines. He is not a hard grader. The only negative about him is that he takes a long time to put in grades.

This Professor is very good at explaining what you will do from the first day of class. And from then on, he basically helps you with ideas for all your assignments. One major thing that I would recommend for his class is that if you struggle with writing and find yourself circling back to what you already said, talk to Professor Henson.

I had him the second half of the summer. I told him I would be missing a week because of ISR, and he said that I would probably fail. I was fine though. He was nice and had very clear grading criteria. I will say, the summer lectures are brutal since they're like three hours long. He says attendance is mandatory, but several no shows still passed.

I took this in Fall 2024. There was a midterm, which was a poetry analysis. There was also a final where we could craft a poem, analyze some song lyrics, or analyze the book we were reading for the second half of class.
