Jake's great as a human & challenging as a teacher. The good part: he is well aware of his own pros & cons & he plays to them. He knows when what he says is difficult to take in & does his best to make it not only humorous, but palatable. And while a multiverse is beyond our visual horizon & flawed humans cant know omnibenevolence, he still is cool

lecture was just him showing off how intelligent he is + would pose unreal hypotheticals to show that you're wrong. your grade is entirely dependent on your TA. TA excepted way too much from students who were just taking it as a GE and would assign random grades without a reason as to why. very boring, lowkey dont take if you aren't a phil major.

Jacob was nice! He poses unreal hypotheticals to show that you're wrong, which seems useless. I think the unreal hypothetical is removed from the value of the class. The class was definitely not life-changing. My TA was fine, Anja, but not the easy grader for a GE, and then beyond that took FOREVER to grade. Jacob was often late to class. BORING

Jake was my favorite professor of the semester. He offers many sobering questions that challenge common assumptions and challenge students to actually think every once in a while. TAs do most of the grading and are slow to grade, but an A is easy work the moment you start listening in lectures.

Probably one of the most theatrical professors out there. If you raise your hand in lectures, he is glad to understand your ideas, then use hilarious counter-examples to shut you down (constructively). Wish he'd allow more discussion during lectures, but the course has many ideas to get through.

I got my beliefs and values challenged SO much. Pretty heavy course considering how much I would have to grapple with what I believed in. The same goes for the homework, which is basically interrogating you about what you believe in. Definitely one of the more fun classes I took

Rating is more for the class than Prof Ross. The easiest GE I've ever taken. Two papers, one weekly 1-2 page paper that you don't need to do any reading for, and one five minutes presentation is the whole course. Would take again. Sometimes Prof lets too many students speak and gets easily sidetracked.

boring and easy class but your grade and experience depends heavily on your TA. TAs this semester routinely graded papers 2 months after they were turned in, and made it impossible to get an A in the class, and the cut off (a 94) was not given until november.

Entertaining and extremely funny. Lecture consists of an example-wacky counterexample shtick back and forth between him and the students, and also "fun group activities" (small group discussions). There were many small assignments, 2 essays, and a presentation. Also, participation is important, and your participation grade can go as low as 0.

Attending lectures is like sitting in a jail, gets bored and sleepy soon. No electronics allowed in class. TA Hass is a very harsh grader, you will get like B for even weekly assignments because he always has reasons to rebut your point. The class median for weekly assignments is 87.

How satirical it is for a moral professor and his TAs to solve a fairness problem by hiding the class distribution from students. They all knew that the grading standards varied substantially (one TA's median was 94, while another, particularly Hass', had a median that was even two points lower than the lowest grade of another TA). Be ashamed.

Class at times feels lengthy but Prof Ross does bring up great points that keeps students engaged. On the other hand, there seems to not be a set grading standard. One TA's median was at 94 while TA Hass' median is lower than that of the other TA's lowest score given. Hass will always find a reason to prove you wrong and mark you down to a B.

Professor Ross is incredible and so smart. He clearly knows what hes talking about and his lectures, although sometimes repetitive, are very engaging. The TA's however, ruin the class. The grading criteria is not clear whatsoever and grades are given very harshly. There are weekly paper assignments due and the grade average is no higher than a B.

Lectures turn into intelligence flex-offs between the professor and students where completely improbably/impossible scenarios are thrown around to try and prove points. Topics drag on for what seems to be weeks at a time with no clear direction. Then, for the weekly assignments, you get marked down for your own opinions and thoughts about a topic.

Super knowledgeable and interesting professor- the structure of the class is super easy, no midterms/finals, weekly assignments are the majority of the grade. No laptops are allowed in class, so be ready to listen to him talk. The way weekly assignments are graded can be confusing, BUT it's very possible to put in low effort and do well.

This class was so boring and not like the description at all. I thought we would be talking about fun controversial topics but it was mostly theory and just the same people talking in class every time. The TA was such a hard grader and as this was my first philosophy class ever, it was very difficult. Just boring.

Jake is a solid lecturer, and is relatively interesting to listen to. However, he bans devices in class (including iPads for notetaking), which makes class extremely boring, especially because attendance is mandatory. Grading is highly TA dependent, with certain TA's its almost impossible to get an A.

Your class grade is entirely dependent on who you have as a TA. My TA was an extremely harsh grader, so it was hard to improve. Attendance is required for class and is taken every single day using a code. The lectures are really interesting, but the teacher just talks the entire time — times when students weren't allowed to add input.

Ross is an incredibly knowledgeable and funny professor, 5 stars for him. On the other hand, his TAs, especially Kelsey, ruin the class with their harsh grading making it nearly impossible to earn an A on an assignment as they always try to find a way to prove you wrong. I'd absolutely take this course, but wait until the TAs change.

Your grade is ultimately based on who's your TA, as some grade more harsher than others. There's no clear grading system, so usually you'll never know how you lost marks in weekly papers. Ross is a great professor though, but i'd avoid to save your GPA.

I liked Ross, he's an overall funny and great guy. He also answers emails fairly quickly. Lectures were for the most part fun. However, I feel like TAs were way too harsh with grading, given that this is a level 100 course/GE. I would take a course lectured by Ross, but I'd avoid these TAs if you care about your GPA.

Ross is clearly a very smart man. That being said, he's often not the most willing to genuinely consider alternate perspectives. He never bothered to learn anyone's name, which I found odd for a discussion-based course. He majorly lost his temper at one point in the semester and was quite aggressive, which he apologized for but I couldn't see past.
