Very unclear, and extremely confusing
Great course material. Somewhat of a dull class. Definitely Sexy!
Talks too fast and wastes time with her insistence that students get into groups and discuss .
The course was interesting - she follows the same structure at all times - sort of boring. Expectations are clear and helpful when apporached.
NOt a good class for people who don't already know A LOT about international relations. You'll constantly feel lost. Hate doing those stupid little groups. waste of time.
boring. flaky. hard marker. i dont take kindly to hard markers who lecture at a grade 6 socials class level.

i think shes a bit arrogant, but it comes from her internal insecurity.. i think. because even when i went to visit her during her office hours.. she wasnt very clear in answering my questions.
Talks way too fast, but lectures are extremely well-organized, and encourage great class discussions. Very helpful, clear, and approachable. Good course readings. Marking is a bit hard. She's funny though, and I always look forward to the lectures. Plus, she's hot.
The best class I've ever taken. I like the way she makes you learn. It's more work than most classes but you also learn more than most classes. I'd suggest this class to anyone. And I liked the small discussion groups.
hard marker..hate those discussion time...no one discuss anything!!!
Good prof. Her lectures are very well organized and she conveys the material well. The in-class discussions are a waste of time though; I haven't gained anything from them.
An excellent prof. One of the few great professors at the University of Ottawa. She is smart, witty, and cute to boot.
She expects a lot from her students (do all of the readings) but if you are interested in the ethics of international relations, you shouldn't miss this class. Hint: Don't say anything bad about feminism.
I found the second semester to be a lot more interesting. Although Professor Best's class is a challenge, it is possible to come out with a great grade and intellectual satisfaction. All in all, I am grateful for the experience.
Good, average professor (wouldn't seek her out again, but wouldn't avoid it either). Heavy on the readings, but she is very clear, and if you put the work in, a good mark should not be a problem. Promotes class discussion, but has trouble reigning in the really stupid remarks ("That's interesting" is her common phrase, even when it REALLY isn't).
She is the worst of the worst. I can't believe people like her are allowed to become profs. She doesn't come across as a prof. who knows what he's talking about...when i think about it, I'm not even sure that she even knows what she's talking about... Her sentences don't amek sense...she doesn't makesense!
Awful. I will avoid her at any cost in future., Terrible. Talks way too fast for annybody to understand what she's talking about. Not very knowledgeable, the other day she said that WWI started in Serbia?????!!!!!!!! NO!!
Actually, WWI *did* start in Serbia. Look it up.
Very good prof. She presents her concepts clearly and concisely. Made the class interesting with debates, films and slide shows. Her marking was fair and her enegetic personality made the course that much more interesting. Some problems of course. Someone else has pointed out that her facts are sometimes a bit off but concepts are right on.
Fantastic woman, great fluidity to her lectures, really interesting topics. Tries for alot of open forum discussion in class, (often fails b/c no ones done the readings). Would definatly recomend her, although gives very little time for assignments.
I enjoy Dr.Best's lectures. She assigns a lot of homework and readings, but I think if you do the work you will learn a lot. She encourages people to think about the topic and defend their point of view.
I do not understand how she got the job as a prof. She makes no sense and as a professor one is supposed to be very objective. Not her, in her lectures you can definitely sense the biased opinions that she gives. And I did not like the way she used to associate the word muslim with terrorists constantly. "I guess it's a white man's world"
Too many ****in' books to buy.
she's incredibly hardworking, funny, and brilliant. she definately has expectations that are a little high, but she's making the u of o a better school.
Impossible to get anything over an 8/10; the reason why I dislike politics. No matter how hard one tries, it's just not good enough. Well, you need to clarify this point or consider this...she makes me want to not study politics. I am a failure!
Boring, I agree that you can't get better than an 8/10 if she doesn't like you. Her second year class was like taking all of first year again. Too much reading for very little in class discussion of any of it.
Good class. Learned a lot...organized prof with everything on slides but have to write them down. Shows clips of movies occasionally...
This prof is brilliant and well-spoken. She is a hard grader, but for a second-year course, the comments are helpful. My only concern with this course was the completely incompetent T.A. I had grading my papers and facilitating our discussion groups.
She definately has high expectations for her students. You'll learn so much and the exams are jam packed with the information taught throughout the year.
Good lecturer. Enjoys dichotomising debate into THIS or THAT. Will fail you if you don't hand in "discussion questions" (which amount basically to nothing more than dear diary entries on some IR related topic), which are worth 5% of your total mark even if you do well on your exams and essays. Should seriously reconsider such draconian measures.
Her lectures are very boring - huge classes where she focuses on participation. Way too much information crammed into one class. However, I had a good TA who made the 4 discussion groups the most influential learning experience in that course.
As the name applies, she is the best. The classes were always very intersting and she is also very knowledgable. This one of my best classes.
This is the worst course I've ever taken in Political Science. Enough said.
Quite possibly the best prof at Uottawa. Extremely knowledgeable and demonstrates a real interest in the material. Hard marker and expects a lot from her students but it is worth it in the end. Don't think I've ever learned more in a class than this one with her.
Good professor...very detailed about what she said. Pretty high expectations and gives out a lot of readings...but you learn something in the end. Has discussion groups in the class to further discuss the topic.
Great Prof. High expectations for students. Nice person, genuinely cares about her job. I worked my butt off and got a OK grade - but I learned a lot. At Ottawa U, other Prof selections for IR and Comparative politics (Miguel DeLarinaga and Tamara Kotar)suck. Highly recommend Prof Best.
Dr. Best is a fabulous professor who truly ignited my interest in International Relations. Prior to taking her course, I dreaded it and only took it as it was required, but through her style of teaching and obvious knowledge in the subject area, it has become the frontrunner for my program designation. I highly recommend to anyone, she is awesome!
She makes you do a ton of readings but she gives you a good indication of what to concentrate on in lectures, so you have to attend in order to do well.
She was a great prof!!! I really liked going to her lectures and she made everything clear. A lot of reading, but still awesome. I ended up dropping the class, but I wish I hadn't. I had no interest in the class, but she made it worth my while.
I had Prof. Best for my Honours Seminar in International Relations, and she really opened me up for it, since I learned and understood absolutely nothing in POL2103. Be warned - she assigns A LOT of readings, and expects you to have read them (roundtables in every class for participation marks). Fair marker overall, and no exams for the course.
Stern and authoritarian professor! She always takes attendance and often starts class by doing roundtables in order to see who's done the readings which I found long and often times dense. You'll have to toil for an A in this class. She almost never used powerpoints but treated us to some funny and enlightening videos.
Prof Best is strict, readings are mandatory, classroom participation is also mandatory, and the exam was long. But if you can deal with that, Prof Best is clearly passionate about the subject matter, very effective at explaining, and an enjoyable instructor. If you're willing to put in some reading time, I highly recommend her!
Yeah she is tough but she is fair! Best made me love IR and she really has inspired me to work hard towards my goals! You can just tell she has been through a lot to get to where she is. A true role model!
Professor Best is not an easy professor, but she is committed to the academic growth of her students more so than any other professor in the political science department. If you are willing to commit to effort involved for her classes, I highly recommend her.
Professor Best is not an easy prof by any means, but she is deeply invested in the success of her students. Her commentary on papers is fair, and if you meet with her, she will work with you to develop your analytic skills more so than any other professor I've had in the department.
i have her right now, and i don't understand any of these reviews. she's seriously uninvested in her students, SUPER hard, makes NO sense at all when she speaks, speaks way too fast, and her course and the way she teaches it is seriously uninteresting. i took poli sci because i love politics but this teacher is seriously ruining my passion for me.
This professor must be the worst I ever had. She does not make any sense and is honestly in my opinion a horrible person to deal with.
Very hard marker and unclear lectures, you're better off relying on doing the readings and teaching yourself the course. Also didnt like how she doesnt like answering questions
made us buy two useless textbooks, busted my chops for her to take petty 1% for handing in something 5 minutes late, doesnt give constructive feedback, killed my passion. avoid.
The material in this course could have been taught in a much better way. Professor Best seems to have little knowledge of what she teaches. She talks way too fast and can't finish her thoughts. Hard marker and very uninvested with her students. I did not have the pleasure of being in this course. "If you want to leave, that's awesome!"
if you want to leave, that's awesome! Is something Professor Best has once said to a classroom full of students. Clearly, uninvested and uninspiring. I hope I can give her a second chance.
She is the worst teacher I have ever seen in my life, she doesn't care if students are understanding or not,she cares only with the slides that she has to finish, no matter if the material is understood or not, please make sure that she is not in your selected courses!
I doubt she has ever studied politics!!
She doesn't care about the student at all, she is influenced by some of the political concepts such as ,power, sovereignty, coercive, authority... and based on the power she has over the student and there is no one monitoring her performance nor the students progress, she does whatever she wants! Building educated society is far away from her.
Professor Best encourages students who are uninspired to leave her classroom. If you want to leave, that's awesome! I will never forget those words. She does not answer questions, clearly uninvested in her work.
Very hard class, recommend against it as there are other methods of teaching and making content understood - none of which are used.
i dont think i have ever met a prof who was so seriously uninterested in the success of her students! students in this class have no motivation to do well in the course or to even attend this course because shes so uninvested in us
Didn't like her at first, but she got better over time. I disagree w/ many of her opinions, but class is enjoyable & the content is straight forward. People complaining about how she told noisy people to leave, you need to grow up. It isn't her responsibility to make you listen, it's yours! Be quiet, or leave so other people can learn.
People are ripping on her for being a tough Prof, sure she's challenging and there is a lot of information but I'd rather have a professor that makes me work than one who doesn't care. Classes and readings are made to make you think, everything is given equal attention and you have to formulate your own opinions. I will be in her classes again.
Very hard marker, does not provide clear feedback on where you went wrong, seems unwilling to help. Switch out if you are considering her.
Very passionate about the subject, but so many readings, a lot of which are super difficult. She's funny and makes class enjoyable, but be ready to work.
this class is ridiculous, for a first year class it is unnecessarily hard. even after doing all the readings and attending every lecture, her class is borderline impossible for the average student to do very well in. Midterm/Final review was quite vague, and overall the class was made to be exceptionally difficult. never again.
very very lecture heavy and must do the readings to pass. she makes first year POL1101 ridiculously hard, for someone who just starts uni it will be insanely hard to do well, she made us read 3 novels while we still had readings, lectures, and an essay. she does not give anything substantial in her reviews for the midterm/final so beware
Prof. Best is tough, but if you listen to what she is saying, your understanding of the underlying principles of poli sci greatly increases. She gives a ton of reading that is highly theoretical, but important. Also, she is strict in the class. She wants to teach, and the students to learn. Distractions are not welcome. Overall, awesome prof.
Avoid to save your GPA
The test are just too much difficult for an intro class
Ms Best cuts down basic exam time and decides to make her students right 2 essays on top of 6 short answers. Her students are in pain and exhausted and top we got 2 textbooks to memorize. Save yourselves and take witchcraft
awesome
She is the Foucault's sovereign power come to life as a prof
Cannot teach a first year class. Her content completely skips any basic principles as she goes directly into analyzing political theory. How can we analyze political theory if we've never learned the theories?!! Super knowledgable and funny prof but probably better for upper years. No clear criteria nor any feedback and thinks 66% is "really good"
Ms Best is a tough prof. But shes also really straight forward. She makes it clear what she expects from her students, and sticks to that. Still, her tests are hard and you really have to work for your grades. Overall I think shes funny, engaged, challenging and interesting. She is tough, but you learn a lot in her class :-)
Jacqueline Best is not suited to teach a first year class. She taught us as if we should already have prior knowledge on Hobbes, Thoreau, Foucault, Tilly, and many other theorists of which most people have never read about previously. She has impossible expectations and marks extremely hard leaving next to no feedback to improve. "75% is perfect!"
worst first year course I took. Really expected this to be a fun and enriching class but she made it miserable. She tends to forget that most of us are just first years and have never heard of the theories and philosophers she mentions. Her classes are very dry and boring. Do yourself a favour and don't even bother taking any course with her.
the fact that she thinks she can teach is laughable. too bad none of her jokes were.
Made easy content hard to understand. Tests were O.K. But i would not recommend her.
She hates all the students, she only cares about finishing her slide, dont try to ask her, she will destroy you!
y'all better know that this prof DID in fact try me. she tried it, but she was not victorious. STILL i rise. and if she tries me again - i dare her -, she finna get it right back. i wish i meet away in this course, not just for my sake, but for hers because she really did try it but i am NOT the one!!
Mentioned multiple times that it was her first time teaching a first year course, and it showed as she expected too much from students. Hard grader, who did not give enough info on basic concepts before introducing theorists who tried to disprove them. Readings were long, and many times irrelevant, and final exam was too long for a 2.5 hour period.
Jacqueline Bests the worst JB since Justin Bieber. Shes a tough grader & the workload is a lot for 1st years. I found myself googling high-paying jobs without college degree needed & I realize that I could be a prof too coz she defo doesnt have a degree. For the love of God & your GPA dont take her & she agrees: if you want to leave thats awesome!
bruh this prof really did make me wanna switch my degree do not take this class. don't. especially if you have an opinion. don't.
I had professor Best for a 4th year seminar. She is one of the toughest professors I have had. She made us read a lot and participate in class a lot. She's a very tough grader and a demanding prof in general but I learned more in this class than in any other class. She forced me to grow as an academic, therefore it was worth all the hard work.
She is a great prof, takes the time to make sure everyone understands. Participation is a bigger part of your grade that is combined with your attendance grade (15%). Her TA's were good graders. The online quiz's were tough, there was 10 but she doesn't mark your lowest two quiz scores. She was funny, inspirational, and she made the debates fun.
this prof ruined my life. not exaggerating. every aspect of my life went downhill upon enrolling in this class and its been a YEAR - avoid at all costs.
when jacqueline best said if u wanna leave that's awesome i shouldve LEFT. do not play with fire and think u wont get burned
Reads off the slides might as well sleep in. Understanding key concepts from what she says... Nope
Online quizzes were super hard, lots of LONG readings for homework and participation is a big part. She expects too much from the students and is a hard marker. I dropped the course when I could and honestly, it was a weight off my shoulders. Good luck my friend if you have Prof. Best.
She is genuinely one of the worst profs I've ever had. She gives ABUNDANT homework and is so out of touch with students it's borderline infuriating
DONT TAKE THIS PROFS COURSES. Literally dropped in in 3 weeks. Worst 3 weeks of my life.
Best somehow manages to make the simplest concepts difficult. Reads off her slides unless its to ramble on about how she lived in Australia and British Columbia, or to complain about her children. No point in showing up to class so she uses coercive power to make you come by putting up a mandatory online quiz in the middle of each class.
I think she gets a bad rep sometimes because she was tough last year or something. I thought she was a fair and intelligent prof. Always tells stories about her kids which was cute and the lectures weren't like incredible but I was fairly engaged the whole time and did well. Readings are incredibly important for doing well.
If you put in the work you will get a decent mark. There are online quizzes which are multiple choice, which refer to the MANY articles you will read. Very reading heavy, which lead into the lectures. Get ready to read long dry articles and get testing on specific details in the Online Quizzes.
24 readings and 2 novels. No midterm, just hits you with a 4th year final exam in first year. Doesn't teach everything in class, just skims over the basics but tests you on absolutely everything.
Professor Best makes students, even first years, work hard to understand the whirlwind of information that she introduces in the run of a week. There is a lot of not easy reading, often times it was up to thirty pages per lecture. However, if you put the work in, go to class, and ask questions the true value of the class becomes known.
Mixed feelings about her. I find her lectures and readings were boring. She kinda psyched the whole class out for her assignments and tests, made it sound like they would be incredibly hard, but I found if you just studied a normal amount for the test you'll end up being fine, without doing the reading. I would say avoid her just for peace of mind.
Worst prof I've had this far. Unapproachable, rude, and makes course content more complicated than it actually is. Unless you're a poli sci whiz with 100% background knowledge on anything that has ever happened, you won't enjoy her class.
Participation matters, exams were not difficult if you studied. Although, her lectures seemed much longer than they actually were. rambles a lot. take your T.A's grade for your exams and RUN. definitely not the best, get it?
jacqueline WORST.
Honestly one of the most demanding profs I have taken, but if you put in the work and effort to understand the concepts, you come out of her courses with a whole new perspective on poli sci. I took Pol 1101 and Pol 3176 w her and they both are demanding and rewarding. Take a course specially for her, but get ready to actively engage.
Professor Best always has to have her voice be above others. In a seminar, where students are supposed to discuss their thoughts and ideas based on heavy readings, she continuously interrupts to insert her own beliefs as facts. Expectations are not fully clear. I would not take her class again.
Condescending and rude. Told me that it would be awesome if I left class.
The class could have been so interesting but she managed to make it terrible. She doesn't teach, its basically discussing key points from the readings. We only discuss based on her opinion or student opinions and not factual points. She always cuts off a student mid-sentence to share her opinion. Too many readings and a group project, waste of time
This class has traumatized me in more ways than I can explain. I'm empty.
I'll save myself the trouble of repeating what others have said: if you really wanna know whether or not to take her class, look at the reviews from late 2017-early 2018 to get an idea of what it's gonna be like. Very heavy workload: 3 novels, essay, DGDs, readings, & a midterm. I'm in 3rd year & this is still the hardest course I've taken in uni.
She says what she thinks and voices her opinion. Some may say she is condescending but she's just passionate. She loves her job and it shows. She's very much of a no nonsense type of teacher. Do the work, show up and you'll be fine. I'm not one to usually get straight As and Bs but i got a good grade with her. She talks allot though.
I took Prof. Best's graduate methods seminar and I absolutely do not regret it. She is demanding and gives a lot of assignments, but her course is well structured and really allows you to build up your research project bit by bit with lots of insight from her and classmates. She is very humane & passionate, and genuinely cares about everyone's work
Professor Best is the worst professor I have ever had during my 3 years at uOttawa. She is not equipped to handle 1st year classes nor is she a pleasant person to deal with. I switched out of poli sci because of this class. To FREEDOM !
I have taken a couple of classes with this professor and I think this one in particular (IPE) was really well done in terms of material and presentation and I certainly learned a lot. I don't know what all the first-years are complaining about with "Intro to Political Science" POL1101 but I guess that course is meant to weed out some people.
I am very confused at how polarized comments are, as I have found Jacquie to be one of the most caring, humane and helping profs I've had. She showed genuine interest for each of our research projects and was both engaging and respectful. Her course truly helped us design a research project step by step. Perhaps detractors were scared of hard work.
take if you have to
Professor made intro class impossibly hard for first years. Would not recommend
Definitely not an easy class but the readings are interesting (there is a lot of them) and she is good at encouraging a conversation. I really enjoyed the class.
Some people may be used to just cruising by in a course but Professor Best is honestly one of the most helpful and challenging profs you can have in a good way. Well respected because she knows her stuff while making you learn the material. Highly recommend her class if you want to actually get something out of a course.Goes for any of her courses.
nice introductory course
Prof made this course incredibility difficult for first years. Two novels, textbook and article readings. Final exam was handwritten essay, 10 MC and 6 short answer with 2 hours. Unpleasant when dealing with students. Avoid Avoid Avoid Avoid Avoid.
Lots and lots of readings and pretty tough grading criteria. However, it really does make sure you actually learn the material. It's the kind of class where you can't "fake" your way through it if you missed things. Class material is pretty easy though, the depth of the discussion of the topics makes it feel sort of high-schooly.
Very nice prof, she cares about her students, and she's very reachable outside of class. Classes were engaging, but if you even miss one class it becomes a big deal. It's very easy to fall behind and the midterms/finals are hard, but her little assignments are rather simple.
this is a HEAVY class. DO NOT take this class with this professor if it's not mandatory. genuinely a very sweet prof but the amount of readings we had to do was concerning and took up a lot of time for me. all things aside the topics discussed are really interesting. skip class? she will actively announce how annoyed she is about it on brightspace
Avoid this class if you can. Professor Best runs POL1101 like an advanced course, piling on readings, essays, and a brutal final exam. The workload is heavy and she can be quite unpleasant. Unstuck ai and other study tools may help, but this is a tough one.
The course (POL3103) was really nicely done. The topics we covered were very interesting and flowed well together. It was tough, but if you stay on top of readings (or do a last minute sweep of the readings for the topics in the lists she provides), you will not only do well, but actually learn. I recommend this class. Only issue is bad feedback.
