Worst teacher i ever had and probably worst teacher at ECC. It is impossible to get a good grade if you arn't a professional writer because she doesn't "Teach" anything she just yells at you to do better. I had a C because i tried hard and im not a writer, so i basically didn't come close to a B. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS!!!
students do not like her because she has high standards for her classes..she has no tolerance for slackers! And u can not blame her for that. just do what she asks and u will be fine in her classes. she is a nice lady if u r on her good side.
Often students at a community college level are looking for an easy grade, Dr. Bollinger does not provide that. She is a challenging professor looking for insight and she has inspired me to keep on the path of teaching English. If you want an experience from a teacher that cares about her students and subjects TAKE THIS CLASS. Wonderful teacher.

she isnt the public speaking teacher who helps you get over your fear she makes you work for the grades that you get and tells you little of what she expects and tells you when you get a C what it is that you did wrong, worst class ever also had a habit of cancelling class without notice
People saying she's too hard probably were expecting to cruise through it. She's extremely helpful if you go and see her during her office hours, very personable and easy to get along with and genuinely cares about the students who care about themselves. She's not going to bother with you if you aren't putting forth the effort.
She is a great taecher if you try hard enough. Listen to her, keep your head in the game. Shes a tough teacher, but you can pass her class, if ur not a screwball.. just focus and try hard, you ll do good.
Shes nice enough but shes incredibly hard, my class started out with 15 after midterm we had 4. Papers that will get you As in other classes will get you Cs here. Also she gives you way to much work. 250 pages given on Tuesday due Thursday with 3 page essay. Don't take her unless your an English major or enjoy being miserable.
She is a wonderful teacher and the only way that she can get angry is if you actually do nothing and just slack off. I do not blame her for getting angry at some students, if you were a teacher you would do the same thing. She actually loves teaching and helping students out and gives you a challenge so that you can actually succeed.
In regards to the person who was in eng 250 we started out the sem. with 10 students not 20 and ended with 7. We were never assigned 250 pages. Dr. Bollinger is an amazing and enlightening teacher...if you didn't want to put the work in don't take the class its an elective not a mandatory class. Her classes are more than worth taking.
This is a rebuttal of my review from 2006, Ago, i stand by it 100% the students on here claiming me to be a slacker are wrong. i transferred and had 3.7s and 3.9s the rest of my college career. This class was difficult at the the time(i am a little foggy after all this time) and not because it was meant to be I have encountered better teachers late
Dr. B is a great teacher. But it is true you cant really half ass it in her class. But i really learned alot in this cless and enjoyed it :)
She is just not a good teacher. She expects you to do well, but she doesn't actually help you do well. She throws you into a pool and expects you to swim without teaching you how to. I would avoid this professor if at all possible, mostly because your grades will take a hit and you will feel uncomfortable if you are not a great writer.
Dr. Bollinger is very hard and requires you to know an awful lot. Every unit theres a thesis assignment. She gets upset if you don't have questions or know definitions of certain things. I would avoid her at all cost. She is very difficult
Dr bollinger may seem hard, Collage is a challenge, and it requires personal effort. Wake up and smell the coffee, life is tough, either move you butt or quit. A boss at work won't be any easier, so get use to being challenged. And your planning on going into a higher degree program, Jacqueline Bollinger will definately prepare you for that
I found Dr. Bollinger to be a very difficult teacher. All of her papers require a conflict and her objectives are impossible to understand. I had four other people read through them for each paper due and they came up with the same interpretation as I did which was incorrect in Dr. Bollinger's eyes.

Avoid the teacher unless you like being bullied. Absolutely zero help. I have a feeling she enjoys discouraging students from being interested in the subject. Plain bad teacher. Also quite full of herself.
She is a very difficult professor. Very nice and will take the time to assist you, but the workload is heavy and the objectives are almost impossible to meet to her standards. I ended up with a C- and I am a straight A student. I have a GPA of 3.9 and this class dropped it by a lot with this class. But its a mandatory class for my major.
I had her for online English Comp. I decided to do it online since I am a good writer and figured it would be easy for me. I got 70's on all my papers. She never updated anything on angel as far as when things were due and when emailed for help her responses were rude and short. I have never met her in person but I do NOT recommend online classes!
I had no problem with the assignments at all (4 required essays & a final research paper), but Professor Bollinger just was not pleasant. I took an online class which, besides this one,I had no problem with the professors. She took forever with dropboxes & was very rude & unhelpful with answering questions. The class average was 65%. Do not take!
Dr. Bollinger is a nice person but her class is tough. She really pushes you to be the best writer that you can be. She makes available for you a list of the criteria she is looking for and is willing to help you with your writing on an individual basis if you are willing to ask for help. Make an effort and you will do fine.
Show up to class, take notes, follow directions, that's all that's asked. Perish the thought it would be any other way.
Not an online teacher. I took her online last semester and thought it was me, my friend is taking her this semester and having trouble with the class. She is very rude. Not all due dates are marked. Not all assignments are clear. I will not take her again.
You need to write 5 essays and a research paper. You are to use feedback from previous compositions to help you in future ones but Dr. Bollinger is so tardy with grading, so rude in her comments that is frustrating and hardly helpful. In her syllabus the word "NO" is used countless times - very negative. Should you take her class - NO!
Took this class online because I work full time. Descriptions of assignments were not helpful for an entry college level class. I have never learned how to write any of these essays previously. I would have asked for help, but felt that I would get a "why are you even in college then" type answer.
Dr. Bollinger is a tough but fair professor. Most of her assignments are turned in online, which is easier than printing them out. Her grading is tough, but if there is any confusion on assignments, all one must do is ask her. I found her to be an in depth and very detailed oriented professor. She is a fantastic Lit professor.
3 units poetry, drama, and short story, had 3 exams and 3 papers due on each...some students in the class did not have the maturity level to be there. enough said, DO NOT be alarmed by any negative feedback, she goes above and beyond to help you succeed!!! Overall I recommend taking her class if you need EN-111

She makes assignments that feel like they are consuming your life. Seriously annoying because when your taking more than 3 courses she will have most of your time. The reading and the participation is very overwhelming and then the essays are very demanding and intense. Hate it I just need this credit. I'm not going to use this too often in life.
Best part of her 110 course is that she has no page requirements, but this is made up for with the amount and difficulty of essays. Essays progressively get harder as the semester goes and so does her grading. Can be very sarcastic, and has a good sense of humor. Wish I could have taken her 111 but it wouldn't fit my schedule.
I have never actually written a review on a teacher in my life, but I decided to for this teacher. One of the rudest teachers I've ever had. Constantly tries to make you feel stupid. Should teach high school or something.
Took an online english class because of my schedule. She makes it hard to navigate through the material. She is confusing and rude. Only allows one day for online tests, unlike any other online class i have taken, and gives no extensions or reschedules of the test. makes you take it on the day she wants. Slow grader.
I have never in my life had a teacher who was this rude. Absolutely discouraging! Her essays are very unclear, definitely not a 100 level class. Very full of herself. Kind of disguisting that many of these comments are the same and the school still allows her to be faculty. Stop putting others down! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
I would not recommend. This professor definitely is not a boost for your confidence. I felt like i was in a English Masters degree course, and im an established business professional, pursuing my degree for self satisfaction. Very conscending. This class made me feel like i didn't understand the basics of writing let alone the assignment.
The only time you will run into trouble with her is if you don't do the readings. The class is based on discussion that leads to an essay so if you are not following along with the assignments, expect to be lost. I admire the fact that she will not give you an easy A, you have to work for the grade you want &she is happy to help you achieve it!
I would have to disagree with many of these comments. Dr. Bollinger is willing to help if you don't understand an assignment, go to her office hours!You are not supposed to enter a course knowing everything & this course strengthened my writing/argument skills. She allows opportunities for the class to chose topics if they are not fully engaged!
It was not an impossible course, it simply required effort.. as most college level courses do. Dr. Bollinger does not put up with those not willing to try or show respect and this mentality allows those who want to expand on their knowledge of writing to do so. Skills acquired in this class are visible in my writing every day. Highly recommend.
Great teacher, awesome actually. She definitely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Took 2 clases with her passed both with flying colors. Would take again; actually I attempted to get her to teach Public Speaking the following semester.
Grading criteria not clear. She makes you feel stupid and not helpful at all. I really tried all my best,studied a lot, however, she killed all my desire to study.

I did great on my introductory paper but after that she said I never read directions when there wasn't really any to begin with. Super tough grader for no reason. I'm in school to be a medical assistant and I just needed this credit. Do not take this course unless you are going for writing or to be an english teacher.
Absolutely terrible professor. Gives little to no feedback on any essays and if you don't follow the exact criteria she sets, which is quite unclear as well, you get a 0. On top of that, she will not give you feedback on why you got a zero UNLESS you hound her about it. Avoid taking her online class. Very unprofessional.
Dr. Bollinger wants nothing more than for her students to do well!!! Very accommodating to the needs of each individual student, I would 100% recommend taking her class!!!
From the beginning she was great at being rude and throughout the semester her critique was more in her professional favor versus helping students to understand the course from their prospective. Unless you are already a professional writer , I would not recommend taking this class because your spirits WILL BE crushed. It's a community college!
Now head of the English department at north campus, Dr Bollinger is by far the best English professor Ive ever had. She genuinely cares about her students and her department as a whole. Literary Theory may be a brand new class, but shes navigated it incredibly well. Ill definitely take any and every English class with her if possible.
The absolute worst professor I have ever encountered. More concerned about respect than helping students learn. Her blackboard is content heavy but a confusing mess. She labels assignments dates incorrectly and her feedback is vague. Library provided MLA Format tool I used for all classes she claimed was wrong format, horrible, BEWARE THE WORST!
Absolutely awful. When asked for clarification on why I got a low grade on an essay which she gave very poor contradicting instructions on, she stated that dropping the class is an option. Very unprofessional, very rude, extremely vague and contradicting instructions, HUGE list of prohibited writing topics. Worst professor Ive ever had.
Whenever you need help she doesnt help you you are pretty much on your own in this class.
These comments are jarring considering what a sweet lady Dr. B really is. Her assignments were tough and I dreaded doing them, but once I got rolling it was way more gratifying than just typing something up to pump out a grade. Dr. B made sure I reached my potential. It was uncomfortable, but I just told her my feelings and she was quite nurturing!

In my seated class, Dr. Bollinger is more than a professor. She goes above and beyond to ensure a thorough understanding of her subject. If you apply yourself, she will work with you.
Pointlessly rude, offers no actual help after telling students they missed the point. Stand-offish behavior towards students. Needlessly redundant, disorganized, slow to respond, slow to grade, constant misspelled words (even while correcting a student's spelling). Overall, poor attitude and demeanor for someone with a PHD, and in education. Sad.
Grading was all over the place. 1st essay I got a 90 with no help, 2nd essay was at the tutoring area and still received a low of a grade of 60. 3rd essay I got a 100. 4th essay got a 50. Then! Missed one essay and failed The rubrics and assignments were so confusing. Reached out quite a bit in the beginning and did not get the help that I needed.
This class was an extreme waste of time. The entire class consists of the professor explaining questions that 90% of the class understands. The essay are graded extremely harsh, and grades reflect that. If she does not like you I recommend dropping. My overall grade was a 94% but I ended with a B! Definitely left a sour taste in my mouth.
If you want to learn take a different class the worst professor I have had in my life.
She was very unorganized when it came to due dates, attendance was not mandatory but she never updated blackboard. With that being said, if you missed a class you wouldn't know anything going on. She used class time to over explain a topic that was not relevant to the assignment due. She never returned my essay, therefore I never knew my grade.
This woman is an anomaly. Some days she is super laid-back and chill, other times she's yelling at us all for seemingly no reason. She repeats herself a lot and wastes class time doing so. Her blackboard site is a digital maze, so good luck with that. And she does have favorites
She confused me a lot. Blackboard was hard to navigate, and she always claimed that you could come to her for help, but seemed snarky when you did so. She was so sweet somedays and very mean the next. Graded very very harshly to an almost mean and disrespectful level. Put my grade on midterm as an F, so I likely failed unknownly.
AHHH! Where to start!? She was the nicest human being for the first 2 weeks then BOOM and she changed. Gave me a 100 for my first essay then 0 for my second because I submitted it literally 1 minute late. Talked nonsense during classes and the blackboard was like a puzzle. Due dates were confusing. Just take another professor don't waste your time.
She is an extremely tough grader but very nice. She gives amazing, detailed, and personalized feedback on all essays so you can do better next time. She even highly encourages us to email her our rough drafts for her to help us to ensure we get a good final grade. Just email her. I can't stress this enough. EMAIL HER if you need help/are confused.
I've always gotten As in English and have been told what a great writer I am; she told me I don't know how to write a thesis and gave me horrible grades. EXTREMELY rude, condescending, and full of herself. Objectives and essay prompts are not clear whatsoever. I always felt that I was writing exactly what she asked for, but I'd end up with 70s.
She expects you to know how to create APA research papers but will not teach you hot to make citations or references then proceed to write condescending comments on your paper. The semester started off so well but with every new paper turned in, my grade slowly dropped. She gives you a chance to fix your grade but doesn't tell you.
This teacher is discriminatory and believes in AI checker tools. I have written a full paper backed up by extensive proof and she recommends me retaking the class. I do not respect the teacher at all due to the way they treated me.
Avoid this professor at all costs. She has a very rude "better than thou" attitude. She assigns things without teaching you a thing, and then grades incredibly harshly. When approached with questions she just tells you to find the information yourself. Very degrading and I'm shocked that she is still teaching. Just pick a different professor.

Never had anything lower than a B+ in an English class. My overall experience at ECC has been positive until I took this class. Let me just say, the worst college course I have taken in my 3 years of college. Teacher was super rude, Said I didn't know how to write papers, and Did nothing to help students. SUNY ERIE, please do something about this.
First class I have failed. To be honest, this is probably one of the worst classes and professors I have had to deal with. Due dates were confusing, teaching was poor, Also grading was completely biased when comparing grades with other students. Honestly glad I failed, I didn't learn anything in that class. Would rather have a different teacher.

Before I wrote this review, I noticed the ratings for this teacher was divided between the highest and lowest score. I don't believe half of the positive reviews. Every single negative review I've seen had a simular experience to me. Unclear due dates, unprofessional teaching methods, and I failed an entire paper after it was turned in a day late.

I cannot fathom why Dr Bollinger has so many poor reviews. Incredibly kind teacher who has shown a lot of leniency. Reorganized lesson plans and due dates to fit the pace of our class, encouraged healthy discussion between my classmates, and was very open about what she wanted us to get out of every lesson. Responsive to emails and questions.
These bad reviews are actually annoying me. I took TWO classes with Dr. Bollinger, one required course and one elective, and she was AMAZING. If you give her a bad review, I think very little of you. You simply either didn't do the work, didn't show up to class, didn't participate in her discussions, or used AI, thinking you could get an easy A.
Writing another review because I'm not finished. Best professor I have ever had. VERY straightforward and clear with her instructions and expectations. All you have to do is do the work, and you're fine. These reviews about her being "rude" must mean you showed no care for the course material or her, because she is the kindest soul ever.

While the course is tough, she provides very detailed instructions and grades assignments exactly as she states she will. If you listen and participate in class, you're golden.
Would not recommend this teacher, difficult to connect with aswell as a very harsh grader, Take another professors course.
