the best teacher i ever had at smc! she cares and actually i missed a complete assignment and still got an A. real easy and learned a lot

It may be a moderately hard class (Essay Exams) But then again it's the best 33 bucks I spent. Just be sure you take notes, and participate, and know a lot of stuff, and you'll have a heck of a great time with Prof. Horwitz.

Very nice woman, but if you don't share her extreme liberal views on every single issue, it can get a little difficult to put up with her. She doesn't seem very open to people's views that she doesn't agree with.

She is very liberal but in my class she was constantly trying to get the Repubs to speak up & they were always afraid (b/c of other students, not her)! Extremely caring individual, not about details, wants the whole picture. She wants you to succeed.

She is an amazing professor and the class content is life changing! Her class is challenging, but then again the best classes always are. Take her and you won't regret it.

Eventhough I agree with most of what she's saying, the fact that she doesn't even try to present both sides of the story and instead gives only her own opinion, is COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL on her part.

Horwitz is a must take, she is hilarious with her repetitive jokes. You learn a lot about minorities and how their stereotypes were portrayed in the media. Will watch many movies however her tests are essay exams so you must analyze everything,loves that!

This is a really cool class if you are open minded and willing to hear other peoples opinions on touchy subjects. The test are all essays but not hard because all of them are based mostly on opinion so there is no real right or wrong answer.

she is the funniest and nicest teacher. i love her class and make it a priority to come every mw. her tests are easy and she keeps you prepared. she is absolutely hillarious and does not let the fact that shes a teacher stop her from being funny. def. take this class. i will miss her.

One of the best at SMC, this class you will remember. Very funny and engaging. All tests are essay, so expect to write a lot and write well (take Eng 1 first). Very liberal, but welcomes opposing views. Be real, searching and dilligent with your work (no right/wrong, but lazy answers are a no-no).

Everyone should take this class beacuse u will learn so much stuff that everyone should be aware of. Prof. H is the best teacher that I ever had, and the coolest too. Tests are essays based on your opinions but supportive examples are very important. I loved this class and WANTED to b there.

Great Teacher. Her essays are mostly opinoins, but you must support you opinoin by facts. If you dont she will not give you a good grade. But if you do you will be fine. If you wat a A you must show it on the Midterm or the Final exam. Got an A in the class because of studing 1 week for the final.

everyone's opinion is just that, but personally, Horwitz is one of the best teachers. She's both a great person, and teacher; qualities that simultaneously, are rare. Class is very informative & straight forward. Although she's very lib, she respects everyone's opinions.

This is a class that teaches you critical thinking and analysis of the media throughout history. Jackie,liberal, and I,the token conservative,got along famously with mutual respect for being able to back your opinions with fact. Amazing class. Lectures are clear and to the point. Group discussions present all sides in an open forum. The text is great; compiled from various articles allowing students to experience the subject first hand. Jackie goes out of her way to make class fun. She cracks jokes and brings in her guitar, she is warm and casual, never intimidating.

I LOVED THE CLASS! it's a great experience and it gets rid of IGETC requirements...you get to hear some interesting non main stream info

I really thought I would not like this class, but it turned out to be one of the best classes I've ever had! I love Ms. Horwitz! Her enthusiasm for the topic is inspiring and contagious. Largely because of her and the class, I have decided to change majors and go for my life-long dream which I had previously thought I'd never be able to do.

Fun class, tries to make it interactive and the film clips she shows are interesting. Tries her best with the lectures but they can get boring. Nice lady and not to tough grader but has a very strict no late work policy

Finally I have a prof who inspires me. Id heard this was a toughclass with lots of writing assignments, but wow. She's awesome and I really want to do something with what I learned in this class. It was really fun, and I've encouraged my friends to take this class.

Easily the most knowledgeable, charismatic, and passionate of all the professors teaching Comm 10. Probably because she's the one who created it. You get what you put into this class. The users who are saying to avoid it are right if you're not looking to get anything out of it. But if you are, this class will challenge you in all the right ways.

Really interesting and cool class. Tests are hard, they are all essay form. She has you write two essays seperate from the tests, but if you get an A on all your papers you don't have to take the final. boo yah!

I learned "the truth." She will open your eyes on mass media's true state in today's world. You will write clearly. Your will make your own succinct and strong arguments. UCLA or other 4-yr transfers should consider comm 10 with prof. Horowitz. There's basic writing, good writing, and strong,passionate writing. Where do you want to fit in?

She is a really great teacher. She will also kick your butt in tests. I couldn't do that good in her tests because she wouldn't give you the questions beforehand and they were all essay exams so I struggled in that sense. But her lectures are amazing. One important tip: Don't buy the reader/book! She'll provide it for you.

Professor Horowitz is lovely. I really was able to gain a student-teacher relationship where I felt comfortable to tell her anything. She was prompt in her emails and was accommodating at all costs. If you want to be pushed, take her.

I can't say enough good things about this Professor and class. It changed my life and I hope it changes others as well. It improved my writing a lot and will be valuable to me in the future. You need good writing and analytical skills. It may be hard for some to grasp especially if English is your second language.

I have a slight bias, but I'll be fair. She is a relatively easy teacher to take. Be advised, you need to know how to take an in class essay. DON'T bother buying the textbook - try to print it out in the Ceyton Ctr. If you do well, you may skip out on the final. She expects an indepth analysis of her material (just repeat what she says). Easy.

reasons why you SHOULD take her: 1. you dont have to buy a textbook for this class. 2. shes super nice and opens your eyes to a lot of things. 3. all her exams are essays. you dont need to memorize anything or study. just pay attention in class and youll know what to write in her essay exams. shes not easy but youll learn a lot. By far one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had in college. She opens your mind to racial situations that people used to face in the United States. I'll never forget her. She has the best personality as well. I got one of the highest grades fall 2008 semester. Know how to explain yourself in detail and back up your statements!

Perhaps one of the most amazing teachers in SMC. I took her for my first semester, she's unconventional and fun. Pretty easy to get an A in this class if you put in effort and show up for class. You should really take her just for the heck of it. You won't regret it. You'll analyze movies and film clips. Class discussion is awesome.

INCREDIBLE. I abolutely love this teacher to death! She is brutally honest, and shares a compassion for communcation what the class entails. Prof. Horwitz definitely is the best Communication professor at SMC. Whenever I had questions, she was always there. As an international student, I need to study harder; however, it's totally worth it. Thanks to her, I have learned how to analyze the media and what is truth. Great class! Easy, chill, and always looked forward to class. 3 easy exams blue book based on notes. Midterm w/ notecard+1 Final! Wants to see improvement, will grade lower than usual on first exam just so she can see 'improvement'...ends up giving A's and B's at the end..unless you're somewhat stupid. Best teacher :)

Professor Horwitz is a teacher that lived through the tough times of the 1960's- 1970's. the class is concentrated around lectures,video clips that are intended to make a student see how journalism has changed. this class involves a bit of reading but by the end, you will view the world differently, and how we all affect one another.

Overall very energetic teacher. the material was very interesting but i think the class is too long in terms of material. Like i feel like all the stuff has already been taught after the first half of semester.

She's an amazing teacher. Points come from essays. She grades hard but tells you exactly what she's looking for so that you know what to fix. Her lectures are extremely entertaining and fun. This was one of the most interesting and eye-opening classes I have ever taken. Professor Horwitz is super nice and she tells you exactly what she wants on the essay exams. There are 4-5 exams and then a final that make up your grade. You don't really need to read the textbook to do well on the exams either. Pretty easy class.

The best professor I've ever taken at SMC! She cares about her students so much! Lectures are fun, clear, and interesting. Discussions are thought-provoking. Very interesting class! She's a really fair grader and works with you to try and help you improve. You don't have a lot of tests, but you're ready for them when they come. She's very open-minded. I've never heard her call a student's opinion wrong. Fun teacher and fun class. Definitely take it!!!

Professor Horwitz is absolutely amazing! Definitely puts into perspective current events with those of the past-- creates basis for content. I also learned to be more critical of what the media puts before me. She is a tough grader, but offers great feedback; she wants you to improve. Did I mention that she is hilarious? I don't understand where the bad comment about Professor Horwitz is coming from. I took her Media 10 class, and had one of the best experiences in a class at SMC ever. She is an extremely passionate teacher, and her care for the subject and her students shines through all of her highly interesting (and entertaining) lectures.

Prof Horwitz made it crystal clear at the start of the semester that those who had one B and all As on assignments - plus commented in every class - would be excused from the final. I have taken other Scholars classes that have the same policy. Some people don't listen. She is the best! Take her class if you can get in, s493he is very popular.

Horwitz's class is performance art. I swear to god she is inspirational and informative. She's lived through this history, reported on it and now she teaches it in the best possible way. I took notes on everything she said but when test time came (essays only; don't let this scare you), I had absorbed everything so much. I could teach the class.

Not only will you easily absorb the lessons the teaches, but you will seriously find personal growth among her amazing lectures, thought provoking discussions and controversial films. Horwitz is a super interesting teacher, she has a lot of fascinating things to say and she genuinely cares about what she's talking about. I had to adapt to how she wants you to write essays, it's a little strange. She basically teaches you history without glossing over all the human rights violations in our VERY recent past. You will learn a lot.
