If he taught all of the french courses i would still be taking them! formidable
if U wanna learn French, this is the guy U wanna stay with! Nice Guy!
Very funny, I learned a lot
uniquely French--funny, tanned and crazy.
Good Prof. Lotsa' fun.
Can't explain things. Tries too hard to be funny.

he's a good prof, doesn't teach, no notes in class, you'll do the work yourself

had no idea of how i was doing in the class, didnt make himself avalible.
little/no homework, easy exam
He hated when you asked a question, showed alot of disgust for anglophones. What was with the green purse and pink leather pants?

Horrible teacher, picks on students, doesn't explain, thinks he's funny, but he's not
very cool prof, makes you enjoy being in his classes, has a good sense of humour.. has no intention to screw anyone.. does his best to make sure everybody understands stuff he's going through.. doesn't surprise anyone in the exam.
This prof does not know how to teach or explain or do anything for that matter. he's probably the worst prof i've ever had. no notes, and his lectures are unclear. i'm sure he's a smart guy but he can't teach a class for his life. BAD PROF!
i missed quite a few quizes, without any excuses, and he let me write them again without penalty. and he could explain grammar like it was an adventure through the jungle. but That doesnt change the fact that he was a terrible teacher.
He assumed every student in his class came straight out from high school French course. He also assumed everyone should know everything for the course...if you don't he wasn't helpful and said very rude things. He does not know how to teach & confusing!
He is such a cool guy..I laughed a lot in his class and his French accent is a bonus.. Hold on tight because this dude goes fast..so listen listen listen!! Good luck Frenchies!!
AWESOME TEACHER. FUNNY AND HIS CLASSES ARE ALWAYS LIVELY!
attractive! and an excellent prof.
the greatest prof EVER!!! he's definitely one of the best profs at Ryerson! what else can i say....always willing to let students make up missed quizes! take this course now!
meh.... nothing special
he's so hot!!! lol... great prof!
Great Prof, nice guy, very fast.
Good prof. I really like that he comes to the point concisely. He's a nice and easy-going guy. However, it may be better to do this course if you have done some french in high school.
This prof makes French fun to learn. He has enthusiam and is very reasonable. If you haven't taken French before, this course will be difficult for you. Remember this is university and they can't spoon feed you so it's your fault you didn't take French in highschool!
He was a very nice teacher. I enjoyed his class in general, although some days were fairly boring. He did let us out early a lot though, which was nice! I would definitely recommend his class. Just make sure you WANT to take french and want to learn it. You can't learn it if you don't want to.
hes werid and boring he knows his grammar and writing, but he cant teach, hes unorganised and hed be better off doing research or something.
he teaches quite fast, but very clear. everything he said is important, though, he told few jokes to make learning more fun. he likes all the hard working student who attend every class. if you don't understand and ask him after class, he would teach you patiently until you understand everything!!i strongly recommend it!(don't forget to bring recorder)
the best prof ever... knows what he's doin and all
He is fun but doesn't know how to teach. If you are completely new to French you better take someone else.
nice guy funny at times energetic. he goes through grammar way too fast even though this was an introductory course i would have failed if i hadn't taken french before. not a good idea for those who have never taken french
Jaques is a very good teacher, most helpful course i've taken in this university, faire marker, tells u exactly what to study for tests. Never boring.
Loved the class, it was a break from my other courses. Jacques teaches with so much enthusiasm and energy, and uses humour well (makes you remmember!), a pity he doesn't have the 201 class. Grammar is a bit difficult, and he doesn't go slowly, but still a fantastic teacher. Answers all questions, wants YOUR input in class, great person, great prof.
He's a great guy! I enjoyed his classes! He's so funny and energetic! Taking French with him is NOT at all boring! I wished he taught other courses cause I'd make sure I got him as my prof!
Good prof. He makes the class not boring at all.
He is great and a really good teacher. He is very funny and approachable. BUT if you have never taken french before you may have problems. He moves very fast through the material. And on the oral exam you must speak like a francophone but he prepares you well for it.
Teaches well
speaks too fast
If you weren't born a francophone, he won't be very nice to you. Especially if you never took French in highschool. He tries too hard to be funny and should invest in a notebook to organise himself.
Love the teaching style. Very good teacher. You should have a little bit of knowledge in french from before though he does move very fast and is a bit disorganized in his explanations. overall, very good!
Teaches very fast but in a very logical way. Constantly repeats what has been learned previously which helps us retain our knowledge longer. He is also very very funny and charming.
great!!!
great prof, knows what hes teaching. very fast, must keep up with material and txtbook. Dont take him if you are completely new to french,he expects you to know the basics.
he's ok, my only complaint would be how he rushed us through tests. You would become so focused on finishing that you would make a lot of silly mistakes.
LOVED HIM! I thought he was a fantastic prof, and I would definitely take a class taught by him again. He goes through things quickly, but he often repeats material (which is necessary in a language class, not redundant). Funny and encouraging; I didn't hesitate to raise my hand to participate. His tests are also straightforward and fair.
I did very well in FRE101 & found it very hard to keep up with what was going on in class. What he was teaching wasn't hard it was just that he spoke too fast&moved too quickly through things. If he had slowed down a bit it would have been easier to understand. Didnt find him to be helpful. However i still did well in the course (A- overall).
Knows how to keep things light, he is a great prof makes things enjoyable. The onus is on you to attend every lecture and most people will get a 17/20 on participation. The quizzes are easy if you study easy 20/20. The dictés are also an easy 20/20. The oral exam will be easy if you record his last 3 dialogues and study them. Final is decent.
Jacques has always a smile on his face, even when he is being rude to a student. And he does it all the time. Half of my class dropped his course tired of his attitude. I don't understand why Ryerson hired him! Does not like to write on the blackboard, answer emails or explain things twice. Don't take him if you don't know any French.
His attitude drives me crazy. He's so sarcastic, it's rude. He's not helpful and he's demeaning when you ask a question. He goes too fast and makes a joke if you ask him to repeat - even regarding test dates etc. I find him very frustrating. I will avoid him in future classes if I can.
The best French grammar prof ever. Pays a fair ammount of attention to different grammar tricks about which I even did not know before this course. Don't be shy to ask questions :-) if you don't understand. No surprises on the exam. Take him if you already know at least some French.
His sarcasm is great!! It makes the class more interesting. If you take his class, be expected to not take his attitude seriously. He takes the extra effort to help you, regardless of how busy he is. I will definitely love to have him again.
Jacques is a wonderful professor! Doesn't speak too fast like others have said, but speaks like a true Frenchmen. Doesn't post marks on BB but gives marks back the following class. At times he would go over some material quickly but he has no choice with the limited class time. Great sense of humour and he always made coming to class fun!
He is a good professor, pretty straight forward but if you have never taken French before DO NOT take this class. It goes quite fast, and he doesn't repeat things twice. If you have taken French in grade 9 and have gotten at least a B you should be fine. Exam is easy, weekly tests are easy, oral exam... not so much
He is very sarcastic! also boring. His tests and quizzes are very simple. As long you study and go over what he taught you will be fine in the finals. He also gave us everything we needed to know for it.
I didn't like how he doesn't repeat things. Also, he says a lot of words that students do not know and expects us to know even though it is FRE101. I panicked during the 20% oral test. It is worth so much for only about 15 questions. But, I did well on all the written things that are only worth 2% or 5% at most each. He is an alright profressor.
Professeur Lorioz is currently my FRE 101 teacher. He is a very very very fare marker. He is always there for you and has provided the necessary information to pass. He is inspirational and funny. But serious when it comes to teaching you french! He wants you to succeed and practice french everyday so that you can one day become fluent! Great job!
People shouldn't take his sarcasm to heart. He is better than a prof who doesn't know you and just sits there and talks for 2 hours. He is inspirational, knows the material, and if you participate you will get on his good side. If you joke around with him he will joke back! Be confident, know the language, practice, participate, and go to class!
if you don't know any french, good luck. he doesn't really teach you the language, he just makes you memorize the dialogues and regurgitate it on the dictations ( every week). You actually have to put a lot of work into it. He kind of puts you on the spot during class, which i don't like. very sarcastic and talks very fast.
If you don't know any french at all and you take his 101 class, I think he won't be the right prof for you since he basically starts with long composed sentences since day one. I've had friends that struggled because of that. Overall he expects you to participate and answer questions, but he is still a cool guy
His methods are unique, but he is an engaging speaker and hilarious if you understand his jokes. Work is fair and doesn't take too much time. Would recommend for those at an intermediate-advanced French level and want to learn the details.
Great prof. Tells you everything you need to know to be prepared for any tests. Although there were weekly dictées (he reads a sentence, you write it down; all in a test setting), the class itself was not difficult. Told us the exact layout of the final, and what exactly to study. Would love to have him as a prof again!
Prof. Jacques does his job very well and is there to help you. if you put in the work you will see good results and gives you chances to re submit a work if u didn't get perfect. although i am fluent in french, he helped me enhance my grammar and classes were enjoyable. if u aren't fluent in french, don't take FRE701. he won't translate anything
If you have no background in french at all then I suggest not to take this course because he expects you to know grade 9 french. Half of my class didn't have any background in FRE and they passed barely because he passed them. But if he didn't, they would all be failing that course. The final exam was easy. There's an oral final as well, good luck!
He is EXTREMELY rude. I would not take a French class with him again. As this is beginner French, he expects you to be experts by the end of the semester when many individuals like myself have not taken French since grade 9. He is not understanding nor clear in his lectures. He makes it hard to ask for help, as he will reply,"we went over this".
Going over the textbook - whether it's an older version, PDF version, online textbook whatever, it helps ALOT. Make a friend in the class who seems more comfortable with French and is getting the hang of it. Having someone to have a 'conversation' in or about French will help your grade.
Professor Lorioz is not helpful at all. He does not explain the answers to homework, he simply gives them and moves on to the next question. His teaching style is all over the place and he has ZERO structure. He constantly makes sarcastic jokes that are at many times inappropriate and condescending. Lastly, HE DOES NOT ALLOW BREAKS !
Very good French professor. In my opinion, one of the best at Ryerson. I took both 101 and 201 with him and he taught them similarly. He gives weakly quizzes in which you write the dictation of a story. He gives you everything you need to know before each quiz and test. Finals were very fair. Almost every student who participated regularly got an A
Yeah he's fast-paced in his teaching and makes awkward jokes here and there, but overall he's a fun guy. I'm taking another class with him again solely because his tests and exam were so easy! He will pinpoint tell you what he'll test you on. If you're already good at french, this class will be a breeze!
I'm bilingual and thought that I could take this class as an easy credit. To my surprise, it ended up being extremely rewarding. The way he grades makes it so that even someone with my skill has a bit of a challenge. He's also great for those who aren't fantastic in French because he really wants you to succeed. Go to class or you won't pass though
He is rude, doesnt clarify questions, and is very condescending.
You have to get used to his savageness and way of talking. He can be funny and caring, but at first you might find him condescending and rude. The way he teaches is okay but the way he teaches grammar is not the best unless you give your 100% focus. Overall, he is a decent prof, but I assume most would not like him very much
The course content isnt really easy considering french is harder than english in general, professor lorioz definitely wasnt the worst but not the best also, its not an easy pass. You'll have to study a lot so if youre considering an easy course or elective that you'd enjoy, Dont take that class.
At the start, I thought Jacques was a super kind man (admittedly with a harsh attitude). FRE201 is a course in which you are placed according to the placement tests, so many skip 101 as a result. However, Jacques expects all to remember the content learned in the said course in order to continue this one. Not one for re-explaining!!!
loved this class. got easy marks from dictees and just simple verbal participation. only thing I didn't like was that he didn't give outlines or guidelines for tests and assignments. Tells you exactly wats on the exam down to specific questions.
Enrolled in the class a week late, emailed him days before class asking what I should do or be prepared for since I'm joining late. No response. When i walked into the class he yelled at me in front of everyone about not introducing myself to the class and how thats the custom when you walk into a class. Really harsh and inconsiderate.
A lot of these comments aren't fair to Jacques, he's a really sweet guy who just has a sarcastic sense of humour but if there is ever a day where you look down or upset, he won't purposely hurt you further. He encourages speaking only French and finds way for us to expand vocabulary. All of the tests were really fair, just go to class- EASY A.
He teaches very fast and thinks you underestand everything Too may quizes
He does not know how to teach a beginer students at all He speakes french all the time and expecting you to underestand everything And He is rude Will not recomend this course at all
Such a rude professor Would not recommand at all
Do not take this course if you dont know french!! Very rude professor
Good prof. Evaluations are fair. Hes also a funny guy.
Skip a class & 1% off your final grade. You have to be on time for the 5% tests. Lectures are boring if you ask questions he says to do it on the test and that's minus 1. Not an introductory course at all. Expects you to know French, you have a question before the test hes like ask me after the test. Like what good is it then. Has a soft spot tho.
He is a nice person, but if youre taking an introductory course, switch him ASAP. He doesnt really know how to teach. You would pass easily tho.
DO NOT take this class!!! It is more difficult than i thought it would be. The prof assumed you to know French beforehand. He speaks mostly in french in class. It is extremely hard to pass.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. If you miss a class he will deduct marks. If you can't answer a question that he randomly asks he will deduct marks. He is a good and very funny person, but I wouldn't recommend him for introductory course. If you don't know french at all, and you want to learn french this is not the right place. You need to know the basics
Maybe not the best if you have absolutely zero French knowledge beforehand. He sometimes talks in French, but only super simple commands he's taught. Apart from losing participation marks you'll find it only hurts if you don't come cuz he never posts on D2L... think old-school teachers. I skipped maybe every two weeks but the quizzes are easy.
He comes off as intimidating but is very funny and overall a great prof! He teaches very quickly. Weekly dictations, 4 tests, participation, and a final is the mark breakdown. He is super fair and you can def get an easy A if you are determined to learn and/or have a very basic French background! Bonne chance!
Will take 1% off of final grade per missed class. His french 101 is honestly not a beginners course at all. Classes are extremely unorganized and expects you to begin speaking french without any explanation. His classes will, with no exaggeration, make you lose interest in the subject and dread every minute you're in there.
Very disorganized, confusing and rude without reason. be prepared to be confused all semester. The D2L is not organized at all or his assignment and test requirements. Wouldn't recommend
If you have the option not to take him... DO NOT. He's not worth it and he's so anal about showing your face on camera and constantly speaking when you don't even know the answer. But when you do know the answer he won't pick you. If you end up with him so help you God. I hope to never see his face again.
listen to all of these comments, just don't take his classes.
Worthless professor. If you don't have a printer, he tells you it's not his problem and that you'll be losing marks on all the quizzes/tests. Does a pathetic little giggle after enforcing one of his obscene rules. It honestly seems like he tries to artificially make what should be a very easy course a difficult one. Avoid him at all costs.
if you dont have previous french knowledge, dont take this class. It is introductory but he expects you to already know a bunch of french from the start. Hes not very understanding, and bluntly rude.
Not understanding at all!! If you are having any problems he says he doesn't care and it isnt his concern. Don't ever ask questions in class cuz he will get mad and call your question stupid. If you can bare with coming to class every week and putting up with his attitude, the class is an easy A. A lot fo work, but its pretty easy
This prof can come off as a bit intimidating, as he expects a lot from his students, but he will be patient with you if you are genuinely trying- that's all he's looking for. The other reviews on here are harsh in my opinion, just do your work, try hard, and you will be fine.
He is rude. Very rude. Seriously, if you do not have any previous knowledge of French, do not take his class. He is terrible at teaching and outright disrespectful. He constantly mocks his students and expects you to speak French by the second lecture.
Prof was resistant to calling people by names that weren't their zoom names, even if it was their legal name. He also has a tendency to make jokes that are less than inclusive, such as "there are no surgeries going on here" whenever the class referred to a male character as "elle" or vice-versa. Overall, not a fun time, but easy enough marks.
It was an easy class. 40% of marks is participation and showing up to class, but he was a bit blunt and rude. He makes inappropriate comments like, people sometimes say I harass them and things towards people and their level of French. Overall I learnt a lot more than Ive learnt in my 4 years of high school so he wasnt that bad.
The class is easy. Attendance is mandatory and participation matters. There are dictation weekly, which must be completed in a set time. Get ready to have a printer equipped with a scanner because you will need it during the live tests. He is helpful. His sarcastic way for some may be too harsh, but for me it was fun, encouraging to do more.
Hes a good teacher but a politically incorrect person. The class is an easy A if you show up and participate, but he lacks empathy and is old school. Youre expected to be on time, prepared, and eager to learn. Failing to do so may lead to harassment. Its all jokes but sum take it personal. If you CRY over small things, dont take this class!
Absolutely didnt enjoy his class, if u are a true beginner dont take this class. I felt bad for a fellow classmate who he mocked and called out for being wrong. There is a better way to correct someone than embarrass them and make them unmotivated. Lots of easy marks tho. Dropped the class cause i didnt find his personality/teaching methodthat nice
Easy A if you can pay attention and participate. He cares for your grades so he would help you out. just make sure you do all the weekly quizzes and participate.
Oh God, what a man. He has no idea how to teach a beginners course. He is extremely rude and constantly mocks his students. He makes a lot of transphobic jokes, like every time someone confused "elle" with "il" or gendered a word wrong. Honestly, stay away from him, terrible prof and terrible person
He is not the best teacher for a begginer course, however; once you get to know him he is nice and wants you to understand. He is french so for people that do not have a sense of humor he may be rude because of the straigthforward way he has to say things. Would not take again bc he does not explain but if you do you have to do you will get an A.
He does a lot of grammar and vocabulary review and honestly without this class my French grammar skills would be so much worse. Yes, he asks for a lot of participation from the class but it's a language course so of course he would!
Rude, screams at students and refuses to answer questions. Awful. If someone has technical issues, he just yells at them and claims its their fault and he wont help. Scary. I would drop if I could get a refund. Youll learn more from Duolingo. The course is basically people screaming over zoom mispronouncing things. Microphone + Camera mandatory.
He's actually a really nice guy, if you are not on the ball he may be abrupt and try to get the class moving along without you. He has high expectations and being attentive in this class is really important. He may offend you if you cannot roll with the punches, but he is mostly joking around. Laugh off his quips and you're golden.
Im convinced this prof is posting his own reviews, Everyone in the course is scared of him. Hi will ask if there are any questions and then refuse to answer them if he deems them unnecessary(i.e., questions about materials on an upcoming test) and shames the student for asking them in front of the entire class. Super unprofessional.
If anyone is seeking an easy course, this is not the right course. However, this is a great course if one is ready to enhance French skills and diligently participate in class. In reference, participation (i.e. dictations, oral, etc.) is mandatory. Overall, learned a lot from this class :)
ONG stay away from him. mic & camera are mandatory. no typed assignments accepted (handwritten only). the very first day he was making transphobic/gender jokes... mad weird. does not upload lessons (no PPTs), if you don't attend a class you miss instructions. not a class for true beginners, only for those who completed grade 9. DROP LIKE I DID.
Worst prof he is very annoying participation is mandatory the marking scheme used is horrendous literally hate the guy. I speak fluent french and i'm almost failing. If that doesn't tell you enough about his way of marking then I don't know what will. WARNING STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!
Prof genuinely want U 2 succeed. Gender jokes R 2 help U understand that things have a gender. W/ language courses U need 2 have UR camera/mic on or ppl will cheat. Show up, follow instructions & U'll do fine otherwise don't take the class. Notes R vague & he doesn't allow time for many question but has office hours to explain things. #I'mNotHim
He'll assume that you know French before taking his class and he WILL call you out if you mispronounce any words. The course wasn't too hard, but I personally didn't like his teaching methods. As some of the comments suggest, Don't take this class if you are a true beginner in French.
Probably the most controversial professor at TMU, however I think he is AMAZING. He truly cares about his students and wants them to learn. He is extremely tough and strict, but also brings laughter and humour to his classes. He kept students engaged and provided amazing encouragement. 10/10 would recommend if you ACTUALLY want a good French prof.
This is a great professor if you actually want to learn the French language, but he is very old school when it comes to teaching. Participation is super important to him and he will call out students if he doesn't believe they are contributing enough. Aside from this, he has a clear passion for teaching and truly wishes for his students to succeed.
I actually wanted to learn french so i kinda enjoyed this class. Participation matters a lot for him, if you answer the questions in class, you'll be good. Just paying attention is enough for this class. However the prof sometimes might be weird about answering general or class related questions but he's okay.
Honestly, just avoid this prof at all costs.
I had a strong interest in learning french before joining this class. Professor has a heavy accent, rude and can't understand what he is saying half of the time. The prof makes the course unnecessarily hard, the course is mostly focused on conjugation, must people could not hold a conversation in french after this course.
The professor can be tough but really wants you to learn French. Participation is key - he'll call you out if you don't engage. Use unstuck study and the free textbook to nail this course. Expect a challenge, but you'll grow a lot.
Jacques is a great prof if you are interested in learning. For those of you who skip class frequently, or come and browse social media, I would avoid his class. Pay attention and participate and you will succeed. There are no surprises on the tests - in fact, he tells you exactly which questions he will be asking.
Jacques is very nice and accessible during office hours. He tells you exactly what will be on the test, so if you have good memory you will do good. Participation matters but it makes sense since this is a language course. DO NOT SKIP, you will miss out on what will be tested. I could see how he can be difficult for an introductory course.
It is stressful for new beginners in French, but awesome lectures saved me after all.
Sometimes, he can be annoying. He is not a great professor for a softie student (which I am). We were just watching videos and reading the dialogue from those. It's super easy, but it's not the best way to learn a language because he is not a softie either, lol.
AVOID AVOID AVOID, FRE101 is a bird course but he turns it into a really intense course for no reason. Only take this course if you are non stem (arts and humanities) and have lots of free time, if you are in STEM avoid this course by all means as for some reason it has more work than actual STEM courses lol. Also his accent is soooooo heavy
He is not a good person at all. He traps students into taking this course. I can tell everyone in the class is struggling very much. No one talk about it. He makes fun of you!!! My biggest mistake in my whole life taking this course. I feel like to cry. Nothing to learn in this class. Old guy!
Worst prof of all time. He mocks everyone in the class. Always laughs at his own jokes. He doesnt updates his grades right away or else everyone would drop the course hah.
