Not Very Good, But Not Very bad
a fuuny prof, make life easy..
He is funny and likes to make life simple. I like him.
excellent prof,knows how to teach,great examples,work=results
THE BEST PROF OF FINANCE EVER!!! TOUGH, BUT FAIR.
Very clear, does lots of examples in class. Attendance + doing practice problems = Really good mark. Really nice guy, incredibly helpful and wants students to understand. Funny and interesting, even at 8am.
A teaching style that is a slap in the face. He goes out of his way for his students, and speaks across, rather than down to them. Has a good sense of humour and relates well with students. One of my favourite profs.
He is the best professor in school of business in Carleton University.
awwwwwwwesome teacher!! Explains evvverything!
Jacques, Ability to convey theory into clarity for the students is remarkable!!! best prof. at Carleton hands down!
tough but fair, and a good sense of humor. He can dish it and take it back, rare combo in a prof.
best prof ever!!!! tough, but fair...made boring 8:30 class really interesting
This professor is awsome if you don't get on his bad side. He really wants his students to do well. Which you don't always see
best teacher i have had in years
Excellent class, great prof
great prof..well appreciated teaching style. Does his best to make the material as clear as possible..and is succesful in doing so! but u've still got to provide the effort in this course ..otherwise watch for u'r grade.
very nice
great prof!! he's actually able to make accounting interesting and is fully capable of keeping his class' attention!
oy... accounting's no fun with out Jacques, but still wasn't much with him... well, better than nothin, eh?
He is an excellent teacher.I think he knows what he saying all the time .but i think he is so raisest.he does not like the imegrant very much
Very good He is able to explain the same concept in so many different ways, in a clear and concise manner You would have to be stupid not to understand accounting after he's done with you. Overall, you would be hardpressed to find a better accounting professor Love the in-class profanity
Not bad, but should check his ego at the door.
He has an ego, but by far the only Prof to take for 1004 1005.
Jacques is the man. Tough class but he is great at explaining and wants his students to do well. You have to put some effort and go to class but take him if you can.
when students ask questions makes students feel like they should have known the answer
nice but tough
the best prof ive had so far. his lectures are super clear, he knows his stuff thoroughly and u can never walk out of the class not knowing what went on in class.. a little strict, but his de man!! take his class if you can!
Great Prof. Made the material interesting. Killer final exam though...
He is very good. His test are hard but fair. His lectures teach you everything you need to know.
He is awesome!
Great teacher
Great prof. You'll learn alot in lectures. Definately has some favourites.
nice guy, very good at clarifying concepts. hard marker and hard tests/final.
Genuinely cares about education. Has a good sense of humour, but also a load of arrogance. Taught well and knows his stuff. He has to develop a conscience and realize you don't have to do everything by the book. If you get a 59.4% is his class, You are 0.6% short of a C-, and will need to redo the course again. Cut students some slack already.
thinks too much of himself, doesn't help you much when you go to his office hours, unless you are one of his favourites
Good guy, good teacher. Really knows his stuff. Make sure you know your stuff and all will be well on the final.
A wicked man, he kicks you to grade C while pleasing you in the class at the same time. Wait two weeks to respone email just saying "it's too late..." ouch!!!
On average, 67 out of 134 sutdents get B- or above, that's about 50%. The rest of students are getting grade lower than B-. Students with major in Accounting or Finance are screwed up. You think about it.
Great proff. Bit arrogant i would agree, but he knows his stuff inside out. which ever class he teaches you gotta work your butt off, hes a hard marker.
One of the best profs I met in Carleton. Helpful and intresting. It seems that you are playing games with him when doing his exams. However, you could fail easily if u don't prepare well. Please try ur best and read his mind. It is fun if you can realize the tricky stuff he has in the exams. Be serious to this two courses and him.U could win.
This guy is a great teacher. He really knows his stuff. He can be very witty but deep inside he is a nice guy. his exams are tricky but none the less he teaches very well and is able to answer your question with clarity
Great guy, puts a lot of work and cares about his teaching but really knows how to screw you over on exams.
Good prof. His teaching style is very easy to follow and explains concepts very well. Id take more classes with him, but hes on a 20 month sabatice.
Best prof I ever had! Makes concepts simple. Very funny. Makes class enjoyable.
The best prof ever!
He is one of the best pro. I have during of my accounting courses.
eventhough didn't do well in his class, i still love him!!!!!!!!!!!! seriously one of the best instructors in Carleton
had him for 42.301 - a Dom DeLouise look alike but a good acct. prof - take him if you want to learn something
This guy knows that he is good, and most certainly is. Take this class, but except to work you ass off. If you do work your ass off, you will do fine, and really appreciate taking it. If you dont - like some do not knowing what they are getting into - you will likely cry at night. It was the most useful class I have taken by far.
He loves what he does so much, you can't help but enjoy the course. He makes an effort to get to know every student and cares whether or not students are understanding the course. A great guy and an amazing prof!
Have him for a course for the CMA Accelerated Program (we have in class prof and he teaches on DVD's as a supplement to our learning. More interesting to watch and learn from him that the prof who teaches here in Calgary. He makes concepts easy to understand and works through the tough problems to make all the other ones seem easy. Love this guy!
wow awesome prof. very understanding. glad to say that this is the first prof i acutally enjoyed attending class to. his tests are definitely fair. as long as u do the course work. had an awesome time in his class. definitely take him. the best sprott's got
He's wonderful and he tells gossip about other profs.
He is a wicked prof who truly cares on how he teaches the class. He gave us tons of stuff to work on for the final exam plus he has online office hours! I highly suggest getting this prof and attend his lectures. Its actually enjoyable to sit a listen to what he has to say. GJ Jacques!
I've taken 4 classes with him so far, totally by choice. Arguably the best prof ever! Textbook is useless with him because he teaches his own way. Make sure you go to lectures though or you will regret it. Great guy, fun class.
the best accounting prof ever. he makes class really fun and time passes by fast. he is really good at explaining and wont move on until most of the class understands.he gives plenty of optional work to do on your own.he aslo offers online office hours. he does expect u show up to class and on time. exams are fare, if u do your work should be easy
his expectations are so high , every class is only 50 mins and he goes really fast and it is hard to catch up , his exams are so damn difficults, you will have so much fun in the class, but it is very easier to get accounting with other profs
Really good professor. Very helpful with course material and has a vested interest in the success of his students!!
He is the most unhelpful prof of carleton. He just refuses to help students. His exams are tricky and confusing, he wants to show how smart he is. If you ask him questions he will try to humiliate you in front of class. Such profs should not be allowed in carleton.
He does go really fast and it may be daunting at times if you didn't take accounting in high school. The tests and exams are written by him and therefore similar to the class examples. He likes to put some sneaky questions for the people that rush and don't read the questions properly. I wouldn't mind having him as a professor again.
He's NOT a very nice person and picks his favourites. If you ask for help he'll send you to the TA. The way he does things is different from the book and that can be a bit confusing when you're doing homework at home.I was able to get a good mark because I attended other prof's lectures in addition to his, did all questions and went to all TA hrs.
Very good professor, definitely a must have if you are going into accounting. Don't take his insults personally, it's his way of teaching and it is very effective. Exams reflect course content, if you do the questions and attend class, you'll be fine.
Awsome prof must have for both 1004 and 1005
BEST ACCOUNTING PROF AT CARLETON
MC is impossible for accounting love prof Exam is hard!!!!! Tests are fair
hard class... multiple choice are deadly. go to class, hes super helpful and clear in class. best accounting prof by far
Choose his section if you can! He's very good
Hands down the best prof I've ever had. He's the reason I'm still in finance. He explains everything thoroughly and will answer every question you have. He is also very good at replying to emails. If you don't have him as a prof, ACCOUNTING WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU! HAHAHA... but srsly, he's the best. Choose his courses.
Extremely difficult prof, definitely picks favourites which are mainly the TAs. His marks seem to come out of nowhere. He doesn't answer questions and will make fun of you for asking. He basically wants to see you fail at accounting.
I would not recommend taking this class unless you are 1 of his favourites......if you are expect an easy A grade and if not expect to have a hard time in his class. he was also very discouraging in pursuing the CA designation unless you are 1 of his favourites......but he was a very attractive prof (only reason i attended class)
Hands down the best accounting prof in carleton. does not give you the textbook version or the easy side of it, everything is realistic. helpful and knows exactly what he's doing. the classes are tough but fair. BEST PROF AT CARLETON
Great prof! Do the problems and you'll do fine!
One of the worst accounting profs. Shows you what to do without proper explanation as to why you're doing it. Up to you to figure it out on your own.
Good prof after all. Funny as well. The only problem is sometimes he speaks too fast as you hear all the word but dont have time to understand them. Good thing is he announced all news going on in the accounting industry.
Great professor. Had him for BUSI 1005 as well. Very helpful, responds to emails quickly. Definitely need to practice practice practice! This course will make or break you - and Jacques understands that.
He is the best accounting professor I ever had. He really cares about students and want students to understand and grasp the topics.
Very inconsistent with his approach to solving problems and is virtually alway different from text. exams are brutal and often do not truly reflect the difficulty of practice problems. Doesn't provide adequate answers to questions. When things are not working in his favour he goes on the attack and makes very rude comments.
Very clear when explaining concepts. Keeps the material light and easy to understand. He seems like a quirky guy and keeps things interesting with his sense of humor. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
He writes his own texts so the material is exactly what he wants us to learn. The exams were quite easy, at the very least fair. If you watched all videos and did a few practice problems (as many as you need to 'get it'), it is an easy A.
Watch all the videos and do the practice problems. The exams are fair and actually easy if you understand the material. The key is to do the work beforehand. He makes little mistakes and usually catches them which I find refreshing.
Great professor! He is one of the best profs I have had for accounting. The course itself is very difficult but if you keep up with the material and do assigned problems, you should be golden.
The course Itself is not an easy one .Some people confuse rating the prof with rating the course. It's not his fault that the course is hard. With that being said,I think the two tests were fair but the exam was brutal!
Easily the best prof at Carleton. Jacques wants the students to well and his lectures prep you for the tests. If you go to class and actually pay attention, you'll do well. He makes accounting fun!
Extremely rude and condescending. Expects you to know everything. Whatever you do, DON'T ask a question during class, you will be insulted instead. We come to class to learn, so yes, there will be stupid questions and they will keep coming until they have been answered properly. It's the reason why we pay to get educated, some profs forget that.
He's a great prof. Tough teacher, but amazing course pack and fair testes
Theory was taught via videos and the class was mainly working through problems. I often left class confused because he went quickly. His texts are clear and a good guide for tests. The final exam was nothing like the rest of the course... you need to know the materials inside out and backwards for that exam. Practice lots!
I took this class online and there was absolutely no support from Jacques to answer questions regarding the material or the examples. He always forwarded all work to the TA's, who answered to their best of their ability, but were unable to provide a real answer. The online class was the most boring class I've ever taken.
Jacques defines the accounting department at Sprott. He makes you work for your grade and is not afraid to put you in your place. (C in 2001 twice wont fly with him - he will tell you you don't belong in accounting). He is a tough grader, but very helpful during office hours. Use that to your advantage.
gives easy examples in class, then makes you learn through the homework. if you do the assigned problems you can get a good mark, however must put your time in.
The class is tough but he does an amazing job preparing you! With his lectures online he does work in class so that you fully understand how to complete the questions and you know what to expect on the tests.
Great online lectures. Best professor I have had so far. Lectures are clear, concise and do not leave out detail. Also he goes over examples with detail.
I wish I could have Jacques Maurice as our Western regional prof , or at least his video teaching materials on D2L . I had learnt most of Mod5 precious condensed notes from his quiz debriefs and review of exams. Yes, he is the best Prof. Students in Ontario CPA and in Carleton U , must appreciate him. Bc we do not have JM in Sask
Financial Accounting with Professor Maurice was a great decision. I took the class as an elective and do not regret it at all. I had no background in any accounting, but Professor Maurice makes the lectures clear and easy. He puts no tricks on the exams and the assignments are easy marks. Just do the homework until you understand the concept.
Fantastic prof. Lecture videos were very clear and helpful. Doing all of the assigned work is essential! Tough course but you can do well with the effort.
Lots of material to cover in little time. Practice, practice, practice. That being said, Jacques is a very good teacher - answers all pertinent questions, don't bother him with administrative inquiries. Provides tutorials and replies quickly to emails.
He is an amazing prof. I took his on line lecture for CGA FA4. It took me two weeks to study and pass the course with top 5%. I didn't even read one word in the module notes and textbook. His lecture is crystal clear and logic. I strong recommend it. I have no comments on helpfullness since I have never asked for it.
He's an awesome prof! If you ever have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT! Even if the class is online.
He's a good instructor but his attitude is border arrogant. He tells you stories and makes comment at students that show this side of him. Wish he was more humble in approach and he has to remember he's not always right.
Maurice is good at explaining, but because he is he makes his mid terms are finals harder than any other accounting prof. Don't you dare go ask him a question as he will be extremely rude and make you feel bad for some reason. Made me hate accounting at Carleton
This is not an easy course. Do not take this course as an elective if you can avoid it. The professor is extremely good in the online version. He prepares you with tons of material for you to succeed. That being said, absorbing that material can be very difficult.
I took this class at the university of ottawa then took it with him. He made this very hard course much better by the amazing online lectures and his assignments. As long as you do all the homework, watch every lecture, and do the assignments on your own, you will not fail. He was 50x better than the uottawa accounting professors.
I have taken 3 online courses with him, although I have never had a good chance to interact with him in person. He is a great lecturer and is straight forward with his expectations. Do the exercises and assignments and you will do well. However even doing so, I found the midterms/finals to be difficult. Packs a lot into a short amount of time.
Took his class online. Makes you work for a good grade - must watch lectures and do practice questions. Looks intimidating but is a funny guy in person.
Very blunt, can be rude when replying to emails, very strict about deadlines, dont try to negotiate with him
Tells you exactly what is expected of you. Gotta keep up and stay on schedule. Practice, practice, practice. It's a difficult and time consuming course but I think he teaches it in the best way possible. You can tell he cares about his work and has put effort into how the course was set up.
He's a very funny professor, and he has been teaching for so long that he knows students inside and out - he knows exactly what areas we're going to struggle with and will constantly point out common mistakes, which does help on questions. Some assignment questions had no part marks which sucked. Mid-term and final were fair.
At the start, this course seemed like a lot of work. But, when I started to realize how applicable this material was to the real world, it started becoming more interesting. Don't let "a lot of work" get in the way of the endless possibilities in the future. Jacques is good a prof. Don't let people tell you he's bad, you just need to apply yourself
One of best teachers I have ever had. He explains complex accounting topics as close to laymen terms as you will get. If you put in the work you will get a good mark his tests are very fair anyone saying otherwise did not put in the effort I have taken him for 3 courses now all very fair. A+ teacher.
His online quizzes are way to complicated and when you read them you feel like your in another dimension.
Maurice is an excellent professor because he takes his time explaining the steps for solving application problems. He will often point out where a lot of students go wrong, which helps when studying for exams. His tests and weekly assignments are challenging, but they rarely feel unfair if you put enough hours into the course.
The poorest quality textbooks a human can write stem from this man. If you want to pass intro accounting, take second year accounting courses before hand as they will most likely help you better than an intro class can. Also, flipped classrooms are a lazy attempt at effective teaching. Complete waste of money and time.
Prof Maurice is an accounting genius, if you cant handle his toughness, then you arent ready for the accounting program. He is not the type of emotional feeling kind of guy, he will be straight with you. Explains accounting like a pro, you will never find a better prof at explaining accounting concepts anywhere in the entire world. Test: fair
Jacques is a great prof and very knowledgable within the field of accounting. He gives you all the tools and resources necessary to succeed you just need to put the work in. Make sure you watch the videos and attempt lots of problems.
Makes a lot of errors when transcribing numbers and showing answers to questions. Can be condescending when talking about the level of difficulty involved. You must do a lot of the practice questions to be able to do well in his class as he does many variations in wording questions on quizzes and exams.
If you ever plan on going into accounting Jacques is the best choice to prepare you for that path. He can come across harsh but he in truth he is just blunt and a guy who tells it as it is and is not going to sugar coat it for you. Thats the real world, he works closely with the CPA and knows how to prep his students for what lies ahead.
Best accounting prof
He is best in teaching accounting
Since accounting is primarily taught online, Jacques does ok in terms of teaching material to students. However, the online quizzes are NOTHING like the midterm/final (WAY HARDER!!!). The textbook problems are good, but the course is fast-paced, so be sure to keep up with everything. It seems like you will get it or you won't in this class...
He was a great teacher but his exams and midterms are way harder than everything he has every taught in the course before. He purposefully sets people up to fail in the exams, and I remember at a lecture he said that. He wants to weed the good ones out but it as very unfair and not an equal playing field.
Ive taken 4 courses with Jacques, he is the best accounting instructor at Carleton. He gives multiple examples and knows his stuff. You have to solve as many problems as possible in his class. His exams are tricky but he covers everything in his lectures. People think hes tough but hes a nice guy and appreciates hard working students.
Great professor and amazing lecture! His video is antidote!!! He really knows the stuffs and I learnt a lot through his teaching.
Extremely arrogant. Explains difficult concepts with hand gestures and takes for granted that everyone understands. He responds to forums weeks later, if he does. He brags about how it is in his nature to make students' lives more difficult (a quote from his video). Corrects select questions on assignments due to "limited resources". Horrible guy.
Quizzes are a joke compared to the midterm and final exam, but if you work hard its not hard to get a good mark!!
Offers a lot of optional practice problems. If you fail, it's your own fault
Accounting is difficult, but I took all my courses first and second year with him and he nobody knows more about accounting and teaching more than this man. Watch the lectures, practice the in class problems, do your end of the work and you'll be golden. Perfect professor.
