She's an ok chemistry teacher-- but how great can a gen. chem class be? She definately puts effort into her teaching.
Her lecture notes are really helpful and she explains everything clearly. She definitely cares a lot about teaching.
First of all, she's about as helpful as a wet toad. She may seem helpful but the other day she asked if we understood it, we said no and she said "tough." Maybe it's because she's polish or something and doesnt know what tough means. Whatever.sh
just a big weed-out.
The prof is pretty bad, but as long as you read the book you will be fine... very easy material. She thinks she makes this easier by breaking them down into 100 steps, but in reality it just increases the complexity.
Overall, I think she's pretty good. I mean, sometimes we may not eb able to understand what she is saying, but all in all, I think she is pretty good. Her lecture notes really help me out, because Lord knows that I hate taking notes. I LOVE J-DIGGS!
It's not her fault that it's a bad class. She tries.
She doesn't instruct well at all. Unorganized, unclear, not very friendly or approachable for questions.
Probably the best 130 teacher.
the class is super simple, its like high school chem all over again. She gives lec. notes which helps. take her class
I thinks she's a great prof. If you go to lecture and get the notes, not studying is your only reason for doing poorly in this class. People say she's unapproachable but that's not how it is. She's the best for 130.
She seemed way more concerned with getting good evaluations than with helping anyone learn. And she repeatedly disparaged "humanities people" both in lecture and TO MY FACE in office hours. It's not her place to say whether I work hard in othe
I thougth that she was hard to understand at times. Her lectures are really boring and you don't even need to go to them. I thought that she wasn't helpful at all.
Examples in lecture are pretty helpful. Sometimes when students ask questions, she is a little condescending and sometimes don't even answer the question. But overall, I found lectures to be pretty helpful.
Lecture Examples helped out. Exams were fair.
i can't stand prof. gland anymore, that's why i switched to her section. she is great, helpful and friendly. i don't know why some people think she is unapproachable. she makes everything a lot easier to understand.
She is very helpful when help is needed. She has a great sense of humor, so it's real easy to talk to.
She is very helpful. This was about the only class that I didn't fall asleep in! Also, she creates lots of worksheets to help her students understand concepts that she covered during the week. She's great, I highly recommend taking her class!
She's a good professor. Unlike other Chem 130 professors, she has notesheets to fill in during lecture and explains the material pretty well.
I really enjoyed this class, and I think she was the best 130 professor. I loved that she gave lecture notes, and they were very helpful.
Very hard to understand, and she is unable to relate to students
She does not teach well, but I am not very satisfied with any first year courses at UofM. Many important chemistry concepts were either left out of her lectures, or not explained as they should have been. I also heard Yaghi, the other professor for 130, is bad too. haha great!
I guess this is the best you're gonna get for first year chem. Her strong polish accent makes her difficult to understand at time. Lecture is always optional, so I usually just read the textbook instead of lecture, and I got an A. The cach online HW is a pain in the ass too.
she will be the best prof you can get for this class. shes nice, but when you ask a question, she makes you feel stupid for asking it. the material is tough, but bearable. exam 2 is awful, so heads up!
Bottomline: Chemistry 130 blows at the U of M. It's difficult and the teachers suck. She is the best prof. for the class, but that's not much of a compliment.

Very interesting lectures
She explains concept very well and tries to get her students to ask her questions. My class didn't ask her questions and she keeps on encouraging and feels dissappointed when we don't have questions. The day before the exam people have more questions though.
Join an SLC study group if you struggle with chemistry in the slightest. Not only will it encourage you to get your homework done early, the group leaders are able to expalin things that Dotie has trouble putting into my vernacular.
This class was awful. I skipped lectures a lot since she put the lecture notes online. The prof doesn't really matter, it just depends on how much time you're willing to put into the course.
awful course, but she's an ok prof even though shes occasionally hard to understand. very helpful and friendly in office hours though
Tries to help her students in any way possible.
Tough class, she tries hard, though her accent can be a pain to deal with it. She tries to make herself available and always deals with student questions in class.
Boring class, but she trys hard.
Dotie is SO hott!! Chemistry sucks, but staring at Dotie all day in lecture makes it worth going to class. Her accent his hot, not hard to understand. She makes herself AVAILABLE to anyone who needs HELP! Dotie is gorgeous!
The material for the class is boring and dry, but she tries to make it interesting. There are always some good jokes thrown in (or today she read from Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.). The best is when Ed the Science Guy does demos. Anyway, I would definitely recommend Dotie for chem. :)
Great prof, her lectures are fun and personal (as personal as they can get in 1800 chem)...she answers questions and its more like she is talking to the class than lecturing straight through the hour which makes it alot better
Lecture matierial is dry, boring, and terrible, but she does a good job of making it fun (one day she brought in ice cream sundaes for the entire class!). She's also willing to sing songs or tell ridiculous jokes to make sure we understand the material. Definitely the best you will get for Chem 130 at UM.

I LOVED that she puts her notes online, it helps tons. Also, compared to Gland, she's a saint. And she's super nice and really a pretty good teacher. Props.
Jadwiga is awesome! She definitely knows what she is talking about and, if you have a good enough attention span, you will find the class to be quite easy with her lecture notes and explanations. She's got a funny streak too :)
dotie's a beast. (that means she's excellent)
She seemed like a sweet lady and she really does try to teach you, but she has a strong accent which makes her hard to understand. I stopped going to lecture because I wasn't getting anything out of them.
STRONG accent. sweet lady. it's hard to stay awake in lecture, b/c she's monotone and speaks so softly with her accent. the only interesting part about lecture is the demonstrations. i think she writes the tests...so pay attention in lecture, but you really have to read and try pretty hard to do well on the exams.
She is relatively easy to follow in lectures. Very helpful if you go to office hours. She is very nice and very willing to help, although it night not seem like it in lecture.
this professor was amazing, always willing to help and very clear most of the time. to demonstrate how awesome she is, can you think of any other professor who asked if there were questions before every lecture in a hall of more than 600? i highly recommend her, and attending all lectures, that's what makes the difference, office hours are good too
Never ever went to lecture because I always ended up falling asleep. I found her lectures to be very boring. Just read the chapters and attend discussion and you shouldn't have to go to lecture. Very strong accent. Not the most fun class.
Sipowska is by far one of the greatest professors I've had here. I've never been a Chemistry fan, and although her lectures werent the most interesting, she is a great woman and very willing to help outside of class. Go to office hours! She'll help until you understand! Yay for Sipowska!
The lectures weren't that interesting. She sometimes had an attitude when being asked for help.
She was pretty boring. I guess she was fairly helpful though. She posted lecture notes and went almost directly from the book throughout the class, so if you learn well from texts, I'd say you have a winner.
Dr. Sipowska is probably the best Chem 130 teacher at the University of Michigan. That isn't really saying much though because the others (gland) are aweful. She's not very interesting and doesn't go above or beyond to help her students. The class isn't impossible, you just need to read thru the lecture slides and you'll be fine.
shes a great teacher and people always think shes in an attitude but its just her accent dude
Sipowska is willing to give as much help as needed. She is great in her office and she is very personable.
She always seems to know exactly what she's talking about. Seems to genuinely care about her students. Class isn't extremely difficult but the second exam is killer.
I thought she was a good explainer of the material and she posts her lecture slides before class, which is awesome. Just go to lecture and you'll be fine.
She's not a bad lecturer, but that isn't saying much. CHEM 130 is a very boring course. Sipowska tries to make her lectures interesting, but there really isn't much she can do. The course curriculum is pretty bad. I found it very difficult to drag myself away from something else and go to lecture/do HW.

Dotie does a good job of lecturing, considering that she is stuck with a class where some students have never taken chemistry before and others have taken AP chem. The material sucks, but I liked Dotie. Go to lectures and pay attention-- they're helpful.
She's probably really intelligent, but doesn't know how to dumb things down enough to teach a class. The GSIs are your lifesavers, but they're hard to get ahold of.
Yes, this is an entry level science class so it's going to be boring and tricky at times, but I ended up enjoying it. The key to success is doing the end of chapter practice problems with the solutions manual. I did them, and because I did, the exams were really easy. Great prof. She brought us donuts one lec!
Dotie's such a doll. It may be a 300-person lecture and she'll still ask if there are any questions at the end of every single one. She's always in her office to help you understand any difficult concept. I don't think she makes the exams, but I aced two of them, so they're not bad at all. Just do the book problems and go to class
While the subject material was difficult at times, Dotie gave it her all to try to make it seem clear and interesting. She's the best for CHEM 130. Stay on top of the work and reading and go to office hours if there is a problem!
Professor Sipowska is the nicest professor I have had at UM thus far. I'm not going to lie, Chemistry can get very boring but she is an expert on the subject and is very willing to help anyone outside of class. She is such a sweetheart and you will love her if you take her class!
She gave me a huge attitude when I went to ask her for help and I ended up walking out on her. I had a simple question and she couldn't answer it with out making me feel stupid for going to her office hours. I guess GSI's will have to do..
I had the same problem as below, she was very negative and rude to me the entire time I tried getting help from her. She degrades you and makes you feel like an idiot for asking a question. I had a few questions about problems I missed on the exam and she wouldn't help me. She made it seem as if I was wasting her time. I don't recommend her.
Dottie was a good teacher that has a passion for what she teaches. She might seem a little mean if you try to see her after class, but it's just because she's very forward with what she's teaching. I would recommend taking this class with her as the professor if you want to get the most out of chem. Her jokes kept it pretty interesting.
Average lecturer, it's very easy to drift off while listening to her. I eventually got so fed up with it that I just read the book in class and would ask my GSI's for help in discussion. The class is still structured poorly, but it definitely helped.
Her accent made some words diff to understand-she understands the material well but doesnt bring it to the level I can I have an A in chem125 but I basically failing chem130 Reading the text would have helped more than goin to lecture One time i went to her office hrs she was irritated with me til i mentioned i was a premed 1st sem fresh w/ 17cr
Dotie seems really nice in lecture, like your grandmother. Understandably, if you stop her right after class she'll be annoyed. However, when I went to her office hours for extra help, or for questions I got wrong on the last exam, she definitely had a major attitude and made me feel like a complete idiot for asking questions.
she can teach well.
Ms. Sipowska is a very nice woman in class, but in office hours she is evil. She makes you feel as though you are an idiot. I would go to class half the time just so I can get my quizdom points and watch her make a fool of herself. The best part of the class are the experiments that are given by the man that you can not hear. Do not take this class
I used to like her, but she really has serious issues. I can't stand it when she uses that word, "CLEARLY", like everyone is just supposed to understand everything she says. Don't even think about office hours cause she just ends up lowering your self-esteem. She seems real nice, but will say things indirectly to hurt you. We dont deserve this!
You learn almost nothing in class but your a retard to not show up cause its free extra credit. Class overall isn't that hard. homework is fairly easy and not too time consuming. the only issue grade wise is exams. they are tricky and always have the simple mistakes as options on the multuple choice questions. Not too hard tho
Dotie's cool. She's really funny and has some legit jokes. She's proud of her Polish background and jokes about it while still being able to teach. You really don't need to show up to lecture though because it's basically a reiteration of the book. She's fun, but I still found myself falling asleep during lecture!
I was always lost in class. Always.
Get those Qwizdom points! ALL OF THEM! they will save your grade! Also, don't go to Dotie's office hours if you haven't read the chapter 2+ times, looked through all lecture notes, and asked everyone you know, because she will absolutely make you look like a fool!
Show up to class only to get those qwizdom points...other than that this lecture is the most pointless, waste of time ever! Use the book as your gospel in this class because that's really all you have. She really tries, but she fails horribly at getting the material across. The entire gen chem department at the U really needs revamping!
She is the worst lecturer I've experienced thus far. Forget about asking questions because she will answer them very abstractly (if at all), and will get annoyed with you for asking a question and make you feel like a complete idiot for even inquiring about something. Boring, too...found myself falling asleep. Use the book and do the homework.
I had trouble understanding her all the time because of her thick accent. I found myself struggling to understand what she is trying to say sometimes.
Dotie wants to help. Some of the lecture slides are helpful, but have to attend classes to find the missing points. The book is good.
Interesting Class. Lectures can be boring but a lot of the minute details she covers in lectures. In order to do well in this class, you need to make the book your BIBLE. Read everything and at least do the example problems. The professor seems very nice during lecture, however expect a HUGE attitude from her if you see her outside of class.
She may sound mean if you ask her a ? but I don't think its intentional. I read every chapter of the book, went to study group, had note cards and went to office hours. This was my 2nd time taking this class with her. Not to scare anyone, but this is Michigan. The profs are expected to challenge the students and you've got to study to do well.
She definitely knows her stuff and could be a lot of fun in class and made a lot of jokes. She was really friendly and I didn't hate Chem as much as I expected to.
Great professor. Made gen chem more interesting and less of a hassle. She made additional worksheets and problems for practice. If you study for the exams, do the homework, and go to lecture, you will do fine in this class.
She sucks. Period. If you can avoid her as a professor, DO IT.
I love Dottie! She's so funny
i dont like her accents. very monotonic, boring. I always sleep thru lecture. Go to class for qzdom extra credits. do the OWL, it'll help u greatly. and good luck.
The Qwuizdom questions were a little difficult, lecture was a little hard to follow, but with the online homework (OWLs) you should do fine. Not to mention, there is extra credit, and the class is curved by a lot. You should do fine! :]
No, the class was NOT curved by a lot. I was TWO final exam questions (out of 50?) away from an A-. Ended up with a B+. Just read the book, do the quizdoms and OWL, and you'll be fine. It's hard to pay attention in class that early in the morning. Don't expect to raise your grade through the weekly quizzes.
Do not take this class for fun, but for all the science/pre-med majors, Dottie is a very intelligent professor. She can be a little hard to understand at times and lecture can be tedious, but she explains the material very well. Gen Chem is hard in general but she drives home the key points very well. Do all the extra credit possible!
I liked her, but I know not everyone did.
Dotie is good. She is funny, and the best prof you're going to get for gen chem. it can be hard to understand her accent at first, but it becomes easier once you get used to it. i suggest you visit her office hours to introduce yourself within the first few weeks. she seems to be more helpful if you do that.
She is really nice and very well dressed, but her lectures are very hard to pay attention to, but do the i-clicker questions they are really what the questions on the exams are and they count for extra credit!
I listened to the people on here and chose her section instead of the other professors. I definitely regret it. Chem at Michigan is hard enough as it is. Not being able to understand her accent made it worse. You will basically end up teaching yourself if you choose her class. Yes she is nice and funny but I care more about my grade than laughs.
God help you. Gen Chem at Michigan is terrible!!! Exams were a BIG slap in the face and I studied my butt off throughout the entire semester! I am just happy I passed and never need to retake this course. By the way, previous/practice exams do not really help. It's as if she wanted her students to fail!
Sipowska was an amazing professor. She had a slight accent but it didn?t affect her clarity (unless your just want an excuse not to understand the material!) Plus, she really cared about the students. As long as you do the online homework and read the chapters, chem shouldn?t be too difficult, there is plenty of help available. Use it!
She was extremely difficult to understand and very boring on top of that. If you have a decent chem background, do the online homework it won't be difficult of a class. If you're not very confident with chem, try to get Bartlett
She is really hard to understand, doesn't explain concepts well. If you have no chem background or even a little, she is hard. The owls are hard and beyond annoying, and the exams aren't anything like the homework. The discussions help only if you have a really good gsi.
I had to go to Bart Bartlett's lectures in addition to Dotie's because I fell asleep in her's, her slides are boring, and she is not clear. If you can wait to take it with Bart, DO IT.
Sipowska is very hard to understand in lecture. I didn't really absorb anything that happened in lecture, I tried to learn all the material from the textbook. You still have to go to lecture though so that you can answer iclicker multiple choice questions--big waste of time. Even though she makes the test questions I suggest taking a diff professor
She knows what she's talking about but is the least helpful teacher you will EVER have. She yells at you if you get like on thing wrong. It's ridiculous. She's really nice and funny but passing the class is hard with her. DO NOT ASK HER FOR HELP. It'll be useless in the end and you'll just feel like crap after she "answers" you.
Dotie knows what she is talking about and if you dont understand, then tough luck.I talked to her in her office hours and told her that I was having a hard time learning from her class; her response- My job isnt to teach, it is to throw information at you....awesome.
You'll appreciate her more if you drop into the other lecturers. *cough* Mroue. *cough*
Her lectures are good, and she knows what's she's talking about. This class isn't bad at all, since it's just basically high school chem.
Decent professor. She is a bit hard to understand sometimes, but it's clear she knows the information very well. The class isn't too much work, but beware of the exams. They will require a LOT of preparation... especially the second exam...its a grade killer
She is a very good professor and clearly cares about her students. Her lectures are not too bad sometimes dry but she is really nice. The class takes up a lot of time and exams are difficult. Go to lecture, read the book, and try joining a study group. Study your ass off for the exam and don't count on them being exactly like the practice exams.
UNBELIEVABLE TEACHER. Great accent. Sometimes i cant pay attention because i just start staring at her but other than that amazing. definitely recommend her!!!
The course is definately hard, but she's a really good teacher and very excited about what she does. I don't enjoy the subject but she's a great to teacher to take it with.
Dotie was a good professor, she really cared about the subject. It wasnt really necessary to pay attention in class as long as you read the lecture notes.
Dotie really loves teaching chemistry; she really knows her stuff. Unfortunately, she moves super quickly through her slides and it is very difficult to write down notes at that speed. Her clicker questions are beyond difficult, but they definitely help you for the exams (she writes them).
Dotie is an amazing teacher. I love her. Class was only necessary for the clicker question points because just used to read the lecture slides. Make sure you read the book, do the OWLS, and do the practice problems(helpful for exam). If you have questions PLEASE go to office hours, she is really helpful.
Very difficult class to get an A in. First exam is easy, but the second exam and the final are killer. Managed a B with an unbelievable amount of work put in. Maybe I'm just not that intelligent, but I definitely though this class was hard. With how much studying I did, I thought I would get at least A-.
It's general chemistry. You really have to be pretty bad at teaching to not be able to teach this class. Overall, extremely average quality.
Hard class and she isn't very clear. Beware: DEEP accent. If you sit in the front though you should not have that much of a problem understanding her.
Everyone needs to calm down...her accent is not that thick. The material is just really hard.
Dotie is the nicest professor I've had. She is funny and actually very clear despite having an accent.
Dotie is a decent professor. Lecture helps with practice problems, but its not that big of a deal if you do not go. I went to half of classes and got an A. Doing OWLs helps a lot. And her accent is NOT bad at all.
Easiest class of my life. Since she just reads off of the slides, just print them out and read them yourself while in your bed. Much more effective than going to class.
Really nice professor (and funny) but lectures dont really come close to preparing you for exam. Not to mention lectures aren't really necessary since all the slides are available online.
Honestly, I wish I had a different lecturer...her lectures were really boring. I don't think they were necessary to go to, except for the clicker questions. The textbook/OWL assignments taught me all of the material for exams. Her lectures don't prepare you for exams because the exams are really difficult.
My view may be skewed because my HS chemistry class was almost identical to this class, but this was pretty easy. I barely studied other than doing the OWLs (which take a decent amount of time, but they really help). "Dotie" has a good sense of humor. She reads off the lecture slides, but I never took notes so I thought the lectures were helpful.
Definitely not an easy class. She loves teaching it but the material is just not easy to grasp. I used Study Edge for chapter reviews. They summarized the chapters in a way easier to understand manner. I also did their practice problems and it helped me a lot!
Professor Sipowska can be very helpful if you use her office hours correctly. Do not show up with questions that you haven't tried finding the answer to already. She is a great professor and for both 130/260, her slides/lectures are the most important for learning and exam studying. She is the only consistent prof. in 130 because she knows what she
Very helpful professor. She can be hard to understand sometimes because she knows the material extremely well, but the remedy is to keep asking questions. 260 is definitely not an easy class, but she makes it manageable. She made some excellent cookies for us and brought them to our final exam :)
Hard to understand and her lectures are extremely boring and confusing. I learned everything in chem 130 from the OWLS.
At first it is difficult to understand her, but it becomes much easier. She is very funny and makes lectures much more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend her to anyone taking Chem 130. She teaches and explains very well.
I personally found CHEM 130 easy, but I know people who struggled, and I did put effort into getting that A. Went to all of Sipowska's lectures, but fell asleep in most of them/didn't understand her. Just do your OWLS (HELPFUL!), read the textbook (honestly never read before lectures), and do Problem Roulettes about a week before the exams.
She is the worst teacher imaginable.
I've heard she's great at office hours, but I never had time to go. Her lectures are okay, I couldn't understand her or read her hand writing. Never paid attention. Only went for the extra credit (which ended up not helping me). DO THE OWLS. DO PROBLEM ROULETTE. and take good notes out of your book.
Dottie is a really great professor. Her accent is not hard to understand. It is important to actually read the textbook reading assigned before lecture because it will make what she is saying much clearer. She is also really funny!
Rude, can't understand her thick accent, sloppy handwriting for lecture notes, not good at teaching at all. Would not recommend.
Accent is easy to understand if you're not a moron. Great teacher, super funny & very helpful. Do OWLS, Problem Roulette, and go to lecture whenever you can. She really does want you to succeed, but you have to put in the effort.
For a class this terrible she is probably the best professor you could ask for. Super clear with the material, and actually really funny too which makes going to lecture less painful. She also offers up to 4% extra credit by doing extra online assignments if you want to put the extra work in. Buy the book for this class! It is a lifesaver
Overall, good teacher for a rough course. General chemistry is named appropriately, general. A lot of topic, not many of them necessarily difficult. Accent is not hard to get over and the lectures can be helpful to clarify things. Skim the textbook and do the OWLS to be successful. Exams are 25 multiple choice questions. She knows her stuff.
Go to her lectures because attendance can boost your grade! She made a 9AM chemistry much more enjoyable with her cheery self and jokes. Very helpful in office hours, I wish I took more advantage of those!
Not an easy class. Read the textbook, do OWLs & Problem Roulettes. People who say her handwriting is bad aren't paying attention in class. Lecture slides are NOT posted on CTools, so attendance mandatory (also for iClickers). Work with classmates on the iClickers, join a study group, and go to office hours. Try to get a good GSI too.
Sipowska is an okay teacher; for having almost 400 kids in a lecture, her iClicker questions keep you paying attention. READ THE BOOK OR DO OWLS BEFORE CLASS, it will help you so much. I wish I had done that sooner since it would've helped pull my grade up. Ultimately, it's a hard class, and I don't think any of the teachers are amazing
Dotie is the cutest prof ever! She reminds me of Marie Curie :) Pay attention to lecture & it will actually be fun. The class isn't hard if you understand math & unit conversion. Read the book (free pdf with OWL purchase) & do your OWLS! Dotie is sweet and will help you during office hours no doubt. Keep an open mind and you should enjoy it too.
Lectures are so long and boring. She doesn't teach, she expects you to show up to lecture knowing and understanding all the material. I think calling her a teacher is giving her too much credit. She's a sweet person, but I feel like I've learned nothing from her. The textbook is the teacher in this class.
I'm really quite confused at the poor reviews. Her lectures are boring, yes, because gen chem is boring, but she does crack jokes occasionally. She offers some tricks to solve problems that the book and OWLS do not cover, which are very helpful. I will say, her iclicker questions are quite tricky. Otherwise, she's a really sweet, funny woman.
Iclickers are tricky. Be sure to read textbook before every lectures. Exams are difficult and the course is not graded on a curve.
Dottie really cares about her students, and she does her best to make a dry class interesting. The class really isn't absurdly hard at all. Just do the readings and pay decent attention in class.
Sipowska is incredibly smart and very willing to provide help to those that seek it. Her office hours were extremely helpful for me, and she was always willing to stick around to answer any of my questions after class. As for the exams, they can be a bit tricky, but an A is feasible. Believe all of the reviews that tell you to do the reading & OWLS
Dotie is a great professor. Her lectures are generally very clear and she does a great job of explaining materials. She usually holds longer office hours before exams, too. Reading the textbook before class is usually necessary for iclicker Qs, and the exams are pretty hard so study a lot! Overall, Dotie is a great professor and is very funny.
Really cares about her students. After the first exam, she e-mailed me and invited me to her office to talk about it and assured me things will get better and they did!
Do the OWLs; they help a lot. Just do Problem Roulette before the tests, and you'll do decently. There's no curve. The tests are just 25 MC. There are iClickers. In my opinion, her accent makes it really hard to understand what she's saying. Also, her class was kind of boring, but what do you expect from an introductory chemistry class.
Exams are pretty rough. Attendance counts, and your correctness on i-clicker questions matters. Sipowski is really helpful if you make an effort, but she can be a little harsh when you ask questions. Pay attention and it'll be okay.
I did well on the first exam because I did the readings. Then, everything got busy and then I sort of gave up haha. Join a study group, do OWLs, and never forget to do problem roulette. If you do well on one exam, you'll be fine if you bomb the last two. It's gen chem so it's going to be annoying.
I absolutely dreaded going to this class. It was obvious that Dodie was trying, but she is just not a good teacher. Nice lady, bad instructor.
As my professor for the summer term of 2015, she was a fairly good lecturer. She does not particularly stand out as amazing, but nevertheless her understanding of the material is solid, her lectures well planned and presented, and her engagement with the students enough to keep her students from falling asleep for more than a few minutes.
She has clearly been teaching for a long time, and, if you pay attention, she will make sure you are aware of everything you must do to get a good grade.
Do the OWLs and read before lecture. Her notes are very clear and easy to follow. She has good sense of humor and she likes to use it. The exams are not too bad if you do problem roulette before. Weekly quizzes are really dependent on your GSI. I took the CSP section so the GSIs were great. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get iClicker points.
Reading the book and doing the OWLs are crucial to passing and preparing for the tests. The iClicker questions are very tricky, so read the material before class.
I found her lectures completely useless and confusing. I played games on my phone the entire time. DO the OWLS, read the book, do problem roulette and ask for help if you don't understand. Her office hours are annoying though, way to many people. Test are hard I gave up studying on most of them
You have to read the chapter before going to class - reading assignment clicker questions will be tough if you don't know someone with the answers. Course material isn't too difficult, but keep up because what makes the class hard is the amount of material you're expected to know. She's a good professor and will answer questions if you ask.
Great professor! Teaches the material very thoroughly and prepares you well for the exam. I advise doing problem roulette as well.
Dotie definitely knew what she was talking about when it comes to this subject; however, she is very unclear, and she does not make it any easier when you have a question. Exams are very hard, too.
Chem 130 is a pretty hard class, but Dottie is a pretty funny lady. She can be hard to understand, she does have an accent and speaks quietly. She's pretty fair with the clicker question, if the percentage that gets it right is pretty low she'll go over it as a class and re-open the question.
20-30 pgs of reading for every lecture. Lectures usually had 3-9 iclicker questions, some of which were tough. Often than 50% of the class would get a question right, and she would ask "why did you get that wrong?". Went to every class, did all the reading, homework, clickers, failed every exam... I was in the slc group too. Print lecture notes!
She is incredibly hard to understand and does not explain the subject well at ALL. If we get Iclicker questions wrong, she blames it one us. Avoid her at all cost.
Dotie understands the material and the structure of Chem 130 very well. However, she often doesn't give helpful or detailed answers to questions that students have. The iClicker questions are incredibly helpful in determining how well you understand the information, but it makes attendance mandatory and they're often "trick" questions.
Sipowska isn't the worst teacher I've ever had, but I wouldn't recommend her either.
Dottie is a very intelligent person and means well in her work. The lectures are very fast and detailed. Unless you pay close attention in lectures and work hard outside of class, your chances of passing are fairly low.
A decent professor overall. She gives a lot of useful examples during lectures but makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions. Chem 130 is a difficult class to begin with and Professor Sipowska didn't really make it any more or less difficult.
