easy going
wierd guy
Grades on a curve so you might pass even if you are failing his course.

Er... Funny, but tough.
cool guy, sometimes goes too fast.
hope he can make his retirement plan in London.

He is nice but his tests are hard
way too depressive,wears all black
the jedi knight for math... oh so boring too! but he's a nice person

nice guy, a bit shy but gives good clear notes
He is one of the best teacher! I like him!! (he's fooked up with some movies and japanese food)
black guy with weird hair, funny sometimes but boring most of the time. talks about movies, says math are crap. what a long notes, and.. huh? he keeps saying huh..
Mainly forcus on Theories
very good teacher!clear notes
Easily distracted. He starts talking about salmon recipes, tofu, and the matrix at the drop of a hat. Still somehow he manages to get all the material in and plays well to his crowd. Maybe he goes overboard a little giving certain people ego boosts.
Jae Rocks!!! He is a cool guy....and he's a good teacher. His notes are good and consistent with his tests. He will also help you with anything that you don't understand and never gets impatient.
Well, I think he's cool. If ya try hard in his class, I'm sure ya can pass. But sometime his tests are harder. Don't give up. He's suitable for young ages to learn. He's easy on you, man... If ya have chance, ya should take him.
he is a good teacher. his exams are easy but he does not make up the final himself which is hard. he is very talkative and nice
don't suggest u to take his linear algebra.if u study hard by urself, maybe it is fine. final is easier than the midterms.
just keep copying the notes throughout the whole class, quite boring.
Very funny person, very clear and easy to understand, easy midterm, as long as u go to class and understand his note, you can get good mark. Don't have to do homework if smart enough.
great teacher if you can study well his notes. quite straight forward, covers what he tests, nothing to complain just a guy teaching stuff pretty good trying to make a living on the side
Overall VERY LAZY TEACHER. Loves to say WHATEVER when teaching. VERY VERY VERY! UNHELPFUL in his office hours. He tries to help you as LAZY as possible.
Great teacher. I came to all my class, took his advice for the exams, and I did well. Very helpful at all times. No surprises. I will take his classes again ,if possible, though I'm gonna to the Europe for schooling.
J is an excellent teacher, his professional knowledge should be over the fundamental algebra and calculus. As I study first two years university Maths in Hong Kong, I think he teaches you gradually, it means that from the definition and theorem.
J is a rad teacher, helps you understand in a easier manner at a gradual pace. NOT a hardass, just a rad teacher who actually teaches well

Helped me go from a C average to a B+ Very helpful at most times!
His teaching skill is ok.. at least he knows what he's doing... the only thing he needs to improve is... SPEAK LOUDER...
thanks ^^
He always talk about "U2" in his class, His test is really hard all definition, EVEN the class ave. only 55%, he won't scale it! If you good at memorizing all definite & argument about the MATH, you can get a good mark on this course with this t
Tests are easy if you take show up for class and take notes. Uber teacher.
ECCENTRIC! tells jokes that only he gets. the poster child of what studying math does to you. owns only 3 outfits. CUT that hair you hippie. otherwise good instructor, fair marker, fair tests. tells you what is on the tests word for word.
This course is unlike the "usual" math most of us are used to. To do well in this course, you will need to "understand" all the proofs and "memorize" all the definitions. If you can, take the lab. It's very helpful to the cou
Good teacher.
he is so lazy and does not have office houre, does not help...please hire somebody else for teaching linear algebra please...
Jae is one of the best teachers I ve ever had ...his office hours are soooo helpful even if you dont understand anything during the class he explains everything clearly if you go to his office .. I got A in linear algebra , & I really enjoyed that course
J always talks about U2. His favourite song is walk on. Hard Finals, easier Mid Term. Better off reading and studying material yourself. He takes no responsiblity to help students succeed.
He is unhelpful, cold and looks like zombie, I hope next term somebody else teach linear algebra.
The course itself has too much theories&proofs to learn;however, Jae manages to provide short and concise notes for most of the concepts.tho,i wish sometimes he will provide more ex for some of the concepts. Overall, a nice guy, but don't expected him to just give u the ans, b/c he doesn't,but rather asks u endless q's about the concepts
Good teacher, bad tester. I learn a lot in his class but I rarely have to use any thought on his tests, as they are step-for-step clones of proofs from class. If you remember it, you get marks. If you don't remember it, you don't. No marks are reserved for UNDERSTANDING it. He is also really easy to listen to due to his fun-sounding voice.
He is nice.Even though he seem like he doesn't perpare fof the class, but he can still organize everything that he need to teach you. He has no homework, unmark quizzes, and not so hard testes.
J. is a very good Math instructor. He teaches with clarity and he's fair. HW, labs, and quizzes are okay. They are not bad and you should work on those to get a good mark. Exams are kinda hard, but you'll do fine it you study if you do the exercises in the books. He's helpful and approachable when you're stuck in a HW. Oh, he's also cool.

His course is very helpful no matter what! He's really cool quy!
extraordinarily clear and fair. also very funny and uses good examples that are easy to remeber. highly recommended!!
I never knew anything about calculus before i took this class. i worked very hard myself, but this teacher made it easy for me. he is the best teacher i've ever had for calculus because he tells you exactly what kind of question will come on the midterm, so you're able to prepare thoroughly. i got an A in this course.no assignments also.best teache
J is one of a kind. He teaches math in an unconventional way that keeps you captivated during class. He is friendly, down to earth and very approachable. He is very clear about the how and the why - theory is his thing. When I took calc in HS it changed my way of thinking and I can see J wants everyone to see the light just the same... so to speak.
The second worst instructor next to MR. Gosal! No enthusiasm what so ever. At times I felt like there was an ice cube writing on the board melting as time passed. He is such a cold instructor. Makes things very unclear and has very bad midterms. One question was in form of some food recipe, students thought the name of the food was the formula, so

great guy, weird and interesting, as all of the best are. his tests are fair, and he tells you exactly what to study, no curve balls.
Best math teacher ive ever had...explains everything for a better understanding so u dont have to memorize, rather learn.
This was the worst teacher I have ever had next to one teacher I had last simester. Never take a class with this guy if you need motivation in any way from a prof. This guy just really doesn't care about much at all. And he is so far out there that he couldn't explain pythagorum in under an hour.
I didn't do too well in the course but I still find that J's an awesome prof. In all honesty, you've gotta work hard yourself for any course. But yes, Make sure you go to class and study your notes, you'll have a better chance of understanding the material when u do ur hw. If you don't understand the theorums you can always go to his office & ask
NO HOMEWORK- this sounds nice but if you are not self motivated, a bad idea. He is clear and keeps it simple- just make sure you do lots of practice on your own. J focuses mostly on understanding theories and does not require that you simplify your answers- awesome if your algebra skills are rough. Overall, a good prof.

Can't teach at all...I try to give math a shot, and he made me regret it! He's rude and is a know-it-all! He thinks less of anyone who doesn't like math (which is a lot of people)..OVERALL JERK
his style of teaching isn't that bad, but hard marker and LOVES to rant... pretty stubborn if you try to challenge his ways and ideals.(typical math nerd ego) Also, he strongly recommends you to take a particular 2nd year math course, DO NOT take it, hard course + worthless as transfer course (in other words: take it @ university)
Jay's not a bad guy...just don;t ask him stupid questions...i thought he was a pretty good math prof...if you want to truly understand math and not just the procedures to get to the right answers he's your guy...if you don't care then i suggest taking math with someone else
J's is the best math prof I ever had. he's clear on what he's teaching and what's on the tests. I took cal in highschool but did't quite get it, when I took it with J it was an easy class for me, and no hw too. Too bad J is not teaching 2nd year math. Also, J told some philosophy that I will take with me forever. Overall, a great guy for math...
If you are really in love with Math, you will be in love with Jae too...
Overall a good prof, knows his math very well.
well, here is a prof that has that knows-it-all attitude. but he is undeniably clear in his explanations and u will understand if you don't sleep in his class. he will also spot those with confused face and clarify their Qs. wears only two types of shirt - maroon and dark blue.
Strange character
I got a A in calculus 1, but a C - on his class. GPA killer!!! He is not supposed to be a teacher.
I got an A+ in the previous course (1150), but after a few classes with him I withdrew. I found him unbearably arrogant and tangential. Great math teachers focus on patiently teaching students the concepts and methods, not being condescending and going on ego trips.
This guy is horrible. He belongs in a lab somewhere, not in the classroom. Yeah, he knows his stuff, but only when it comes to math, not when it comes to education. Horrible attitude, hardly ever engages the class, and is insulting when he does. I would transfer without a degree before I'd ever take his class again. Awful, awful instructor.
J is kind of weird actually, he says a lot other stuff like music in his lessons. But he is a nice guy, he told us everything about the midterms, quizzes and the exam, so you just need to follow his outline to study, then you can do extremely well. I think this course is designed for non-science student. The math is quite easy, don't skip classes=]
this guy finished course material one week before school ends. the problem with him is that he expects us to be ALL SMART! WITH SOLID CALCULUS/MATH BACKGROUND.if you ask "stupid question" he will EMBARRASS YOU! i would not recommond anyone to take his class unless you LOVE math and you are super good at learning math! he's more like an AP teacher..
When I took Jangs class 2 years ago I wasnt a huge fan. I thought his teaching style was very long-winded and that he was too arrogant. Two years later I can say that he was the best math teacher I have ever had. If you enjoy math at all, the way he gets you thinking about the subject will help you out so much in every future math course you take
Some people aren't that good at math and for them he is a terrible teacher. Anyone who is average and above I would say he is a very good teacher. He could even be one of the best if he took into consideration that not everyone is going to take advanced math and for some people the concepts are not obvious. He's a character all right.
Acts like everything should be really easy to you and mocks the idea that anyone would have difficulty. arrogant is the word I'm looking for.
I rated him a 5 but it's hard to justify it. His teaching style is very unique, and I can tell that it's a top tier teaching style that would help you understand math at the deepest level. He focuses on understanding rather than practicing problems. All complex theory questions
He's not a great teacher if your someone who needs a lot of help; definitely knows what he's talking about, but has terrible relational skills; In the math help centre he would literally do nothing for you - expects you to get it on your own; If your a math wiz, you might like him; If you're coming in with a C in Math 11 - don't bother.
Class break down: 2 midterms + 4 Quizes + Final. The best part about having this guy as your prof is that, HE TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT IS ON THE MIDTERM, QUESTION BY QUESTION, I KNOW THERE ARE ONLY A FEW IN THE WORLD THAT DO THIS! If you want an easy A, and do give a crap about the things you learn, this class will be a breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze!!!
do yourself a favor, try not to take him. knows his stuff, but his lectures and his final are not fun. you'd be better off with another professor.
Really a great teacher. Genuinely WANTS you to pass and is willing to work at it. No homework, I didn't even get the textbook. I believe I passed only due to the teacher, I'm usually quite bad at math and everything just clicked with this prof. The subject is awfully hard, but doable. He even stops class early if the class isn't feelin' it.
Jang is a brilliant professor, as far as his knowledge goes. His lectures are clear and verbose, but that is where his skills end; he seems to have forgotten that students cannot be expected to think on the same level as professors, and that some students learn by asking questions. He was often condescending, and his expectations were far too high.
i was pretty happy tht i did great in all the tests and quizzes i do agree with most of people here his expectations are ridiculously high- also i thought the final was fricken hard the notes/hmwk in the textbook i felt didnt prepare me at all for the final coz its worth like 40%, overall i ended up w/ a rly****y mark, but thats just me tho
Jae is an absolutely amazing teacher. He provides extremely thorough notes that give clarity to the foundation of topics--a big help in understanding the course content. And he genuinely cares about his students, though most let his attitude get in the way (he only has good intentions). His course is easy: he tells you everything thats on his tests
He can be awkward with people, but he tries. He teaches, in my opinion, quite thoroughly. The examples he gives in class will be invaluable to you. He tells you exactly what his quizzes and exams are going to be on. Just focus on understanding the concepts, and you will find his tests very easy. They are extremely similar to his notes.
He tries to help students a lot, but his expectation is quite high. He usually want us to understand proves throughout the course. Once you know his style and understand the concept of the course, everything else is getting easier. He also prepares his course really well, so we won't be behind on the courses.
Personally, I was not a fan of his teaching style, he sort of makes you feel foolish for asking questions and likes to deem things "obvious". Tests weren't overly bad, but my god, was the final hard. I would suggest him as a teacher if you are very independent and self-motivated for math, but if you are weak at math like myself, steer clear.
Final was not reflective of the term tests, it was 10x harder and the last half of the course did not prepare me for it at all. He is very difficult to approach and is very condescending. I did very well on the quizzes and term tests but the final dropped my letter grade down substantially. I would not take him again.
Mr Jang is not a very helpful instructor. Notes are clear, but that doesn't atone for his enigmatic and condescending attitude. If your math skills aren't up to par and you need any help whatsoever, I strongly recommend you someone else as your instructor as his office hours are "preferred" office hours.
I took his 1253 and 1271. I find he is a good and clear instructor, but a little bit shy. His office hour seems cold, but he is waiting for your questions. 1271 is a hard course. Math final exam is harder. You cannot predict how hard the final is, so you cannot prepare well.
Worst prof I've ever had. Never help students both in class or during his office hour. Don't take him unless you want to torture yourself.
Can be very vague about what's on the midterms; you might spend time studying something he says will be on the test, and it turns out that it's not on the test at all! Midterm 2 was way too long for a 50 min class. No assignments and fewer quizzes mean that the overlong and ill-described tests count for more.
He's not helpful.
Jang is very cool in his own mind which makes him anti social and not very likable. He gives you 60% of the class grades for free and makes the final impossible. If he could just stop dragging his feet everywhere, perhaps tuck his shirt in, and perhaps pretended to care, the world would be a better place.
He definitely knows a lot about calculus and will help students if they ask. His midterms aren't bad but his final is tough. His exam questions require you to do a lot of thinking so it's best to practice a lot.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Thinks he is way too cool and expects you to "know" everything. All he did was discuss how he is so smart and his taste in music is incredible. This is a math class, not a history class on music from the 70s and 80s.
Mr. Jang is an unusual professor, would not recommend unless you like to teach the whole textbook, and concepts to yourself. He has an attitude where he thinks that everyone knows how to do the problems, and more. Midterms and finals are extremely hard. Nothing like his in class examples, or textbook questions.
Better hope the class has no flies. Be ready to to study outside of class.
Mr. Jang is a pretty bad professor, he doesn't care for his students, hes pretty hard in marking midterms and quiz its either 1 full mark or none. the midterms were ok(if you practiced in the textbook) expect 1 or 2 quiz question will be on the midterms
He talks a lot during the lecture, and expect you to know everything from the txt. He's such a hard marker, you actually have to memerize the definition from the txt to pass the first two quizzes. Midterms are okay, but final is the toughest!! Half of the questions are neither from the txt nor the lecture! Avoid taking his class!
Class wasn't overly difficult, just practice and you should be fine.
This professor may have some personal issues w neglect. Has someone hired kim jung anh to teach at Langara??!
Best teacher ever. Period enough said. He just really made math enjoyable and I learned a lot from this guy.
He is one of those professors that I will remember for years to come because he is funny and inspirational. By attending his lectures I have learned to enjoy math more, even though I always loved math his humor just made the lectures more fun. Also instead of mindlessly taking notes he will usually guide you through a lot of problems, easy A anyone?
Tries hard to be unapproachable & rude. Belittles you for asking questions, rushes through concepts as if you already know them & goes off on wild tangents about 80's music & conspiracy theories unrelated to lectures. Gives very clear guidelines on what to expect on exams, but exams are tough & heavily weighted: No web assign, only a few quizzes.
Terrible professor! I am not so confident when it comes to math, but I've spent some time on my foundation. This guy is quick to expose any cracks in your foundation (my bad) but is very condescending in the process (his bad). Long winded lectures, very tangential, and offers no help! Why he became a teacher bewilders me, seems like he hates people
I didn't like his lecture b/c he was annoying when he talked about unrelated stuff and his personal view of thing. But I like how he didn't care much for computational errors, but misuse of definitions, theorems, or techniques, which he emphasized a lot on. As much as I hate to say, he makes me hate math less.
Spent the entire semester afraid to go to him for help. If you don't understand and try to ask for help, he will call you stupid for not understanding. Quizzes and exams aren't hard if you already have the material down 100%. If you're unsure of material or are learning it new you'll fail. Avoid at all cost.
Terrible math teacher, tough grader. He will deduct every single possible marks. Don't waste time and money to take his classes and get a poor grade to destroy your whole GPA.
Picky marker, looks for precise answers in tests. If you can get over that, not a bad math instructor.
He's not exactly nice but he conveys the math well. No marked homework, but you can do webassign stuff he provides. He's menacing at first but after a while you see he's not so bad
For sure one of the best profs I've ever had. He explains the stuff so well during lectures. I haven't spent 5 minutes on homework all semester and I feel like I know the course material better than any other class because of how well his lectures explain the material. If you can, take him. He will improve your understanding of Math significantly.
Easy marker, he tries to give you more marks even if you arent able to answer the question and only write a function or draw a graph. He writes on board is what he will test, his quiz questions will again be in the exam, how easy it is!! He explains details much much better than others cuz he knows math so well and he makes hard easy! No homework!
Terribly hard teacher. His lectures very boring and the final exam is ridiculously hard. Makes us memorize too many theorems and proofs. 1Tests are mostly conceptual and intended for students with a strong background in calculus.
Wow, before I took this course with him I decided too long should I take it or not. Please people are saying he is terrible. But, after I took the course with him, I wish he can teach me rest of my life. One of the best Math instructor I ever met. Clear, funny, very very useful, all you need is understand.
Don't take his class if you have never study calculus. He is known as the worst teacher in Langara. He teaches nothing no HW. His tests are only easy for students who have studies calculus before. If you are a newby in calculus, don't take his class. Half of his student dropped his class. I register just because I really wanna rate this s**t.
HE is AMAZING at lectures! Very FUNNY and TEACHES BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. His exam Qs need CREATIVITY and deep understanding of exactly what he has taught and what is DEFINED in book. Make sure you understand every single definition and solved example in book and dont let all sections to pile up. wouldnt get a good grade from him tho :(
this guy is not good. no homework for mark. The questions of his exam are stupid. He does not give you the questions that you practiced before.
He teaches math like he is teaching philosophy and history xD
He gives you hints as to what you will see in the midterms and also gives you a problem set before each test. Do them because 90% of the midterm questions are in those problem sets. Mid terms have good reasons to be hard. They set you up so you'll be prepared for the final exam. He say's the final is notoriously difficult..
I've never had a problem with math, until I got this instructor. He tries to get people to answer questions in class so that he can mock them in front of everyone (didn't happen to me) and is very rude. He assigned the even practice questions in the text, and then tested on material that was only covered in the odd #'s, and was not taught in class.
Be ready to study really really hard outside of class. If you are someone who doesn't have a strong background in Math, don't take him as he is not approachable, unless you don't mind being talked down to. That said, sometimes he gives the questions that would be on the final. PAY ATTENTION.
such a good teacher
I won't recommend
He teaches 1 question per hour. The slowest teaching I've ever experienced. I remember one day he spent half an hour to talk about cinema... He thinks he is a genius.. so he acts like a weird guy. he always puts up his hands with no purpose...
He is my nightmare. I shouldn't take his class. He really does not know how to teach.. he teaches so slow. And he teaches a lot of unuseful things...
I love math. I did pretty well in High school. But this teacher never teaches well.
One of the most unkind and unapproachable profs I've ever had. He very clearly looks down on first year students. Often goes on long tangents that have nothing to do with math. Has been late to class multiple times, including the midterm. Overall an unpleasant experience.
The only math teacher I've had that actually teaches math. Can turn one who hates math to one who appreciates it.
He's organized and chooses good exercises as examples to explain the content. He helps with hints about exercises that will be on quizzes He is frequently late even for Midterms. He is such a not approchable person. Everybody stays quite in his class, because he's really rude. He gets angry for no reason and he teachs the board not students.
He is a good teacher but not so patient. He prefers spending his time on his own research instead of his new students.
If you didnot take this course before or have a background of Calculus, I won' t recommend you to take his courses.
Marks come solely from quizzes, midterms, and final. No credit for textbook work, work on Web Assign, or participation/attendance. He is consistently 5-10 minutes late for class and goes off topic easily. He makes unethical and disrespectful 'jokes' about students. Avoid him at all costs. He makes you feel stupid which a professor should never do.
Probably one of the worst math teachers at Langara. He was the only teacher for math 1153 so I had to take him but if you have a choice, PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The midyear was decent but the final was extremley difficult you would rather not take it cause you already know you're gonna fail. Half the class didn't even pass the course. AVOID!!!!!
Honestly Jae does teach but only teachers the easy exercises and expects you to know the harder questions he puts on the final. He tells the students to participate but if you say the wrong answer he makes fun of you. Not approachable and final was so hard, it was the reason I failed this course.
over 2/3 students dropped out. This guy likes to talk about his life and how he's a genius for creating stupid techniques. Doesnt assign questions so you dont know what to expect on midterms. I got perfect on all the quizzes but got 40% on the midterm
It's complicated. Jang has a passion for math, but perhaps not teaching. He can be intimidating, and rude, but I suspect that's not his fault. If you're not afraid to participate in class or see him after class, even though he is *very* unapproachable (I couldn't do it), you'll find him just fine. His rigorous methods can help those in sciences.
He loves math but not teaching (VERY unapproachable). Lectures either correlate with homework/quiz/test or not at all. First midterm class average was 47%. I lasted 1.5 months in his class before dropping. I swallowed my feelings every time I visited his office (5 times in total), and each time he would say something negative to me. Choose wisely.
Lmao this guy is hilarious. If you dont know calc then he will show you de way. Lol, lets be real here. He is a terrible lecturer, but I dont mind his quizzes and tests. Format makes it easy he tells you whats going to be on the midterm beforehand. Just read your textbook and practise and youll easily pass.
Worst instructor ever. Don't even consider taking his class because you will be ended up dropping out. I can tell that he likes math but not his students. He is a sarcastic person, so beware.
You will start as a ripe tomato then you will get grilled and have the water contents removed to reduce the acidity in you. Basically you are going to be a grilled tomato at the end of the semester :)
He is the worst math instructor I have known so far at Langara. No kindness, sympathy and empathy. A lot of students drop his classes. Rude and unapproachable. Avoid him at any cost.
The materials in his lectures do not match with the level of the course. He teaches tough things and does not give practice questions before the tests. His tests are more difficult than what he teaches. Many students drop his class. Unapproachable and helpless after class hours.
Just know how to cook and you will be fine in this course (:
I dont know why this insane guys rating is 3 out of 5. Wondering how come he got hired by Langara. Doesnt teach very well but just a tough marker. And extremely hard exams. If u think hes not the worst because of rating, dont trust this rating. Dont waste your money and time to lower your GPA.
Avoid at all costs.
Honestly, he is a great person wit humor. He just lacks the ability to connect with students for them to learn the lecture properly. Otherwise, Jae is a great math prof for calculus 1 and 2. I would highly recommend taking him.
Avoid ate all costs. He does not respect students.
Avoid this professor at all cost dont even take his class if other are full because eventually you are gonna lower ur gpa Quizzes are easy but the real game starts when you get your first mid term and course keeps on getting harder He Terrible guy talking about all that crap that revolves around him instead of teaching properly
Jae sometimes is hilarious and his lecture is amazing. I have to say if you have a little knowledge of math, you would enjoy the class. If you are not smart enough to get what he talks about in class, don't blame on the professor, it's your problem
Avoid at all costs. Never seen such a bad prof in my life. His voice very low, if you want to hear him, you have to sit in the front. He is actually overrated, not even 2.9. I had way better profs who had lower rating then 2.9.
Terrible prof. Angry, mad at life, makes fun of students. Spends literally half an hour (in 1 hr class) ranting about non-math related stuff like too easy school systems, and how people ask too many questions. His lectures are so obscure so you have to read the textbook, but his exams are unnecessarily hard. Idk how he has 2 good ratings plz fire
Jang is actually a really great lecturer. You do have to attend all the classes, be attentive and take notes, but he makes class interesting and presents the material in a way that helps you avoid common pitfalls students always make. This is the third time I've taken Calc 2, and it's the first time I'm actually understanding the material.
Avoid at all costs. His tests are extremely hard and does not align with what he discsses in class. Very hard to get grades even in simple questions. Thus, it is almost impossible to get feedback as he gets mad at you for asking anything (in class, about exam, on one on one, etc.). Moreover, he always judges people and very hard to hear him.
just dont take take his course
He talks in the classes not very loud so that there are a lot of students do not hear what he says in the classes
Don't take his course terrible teaching
I don't really like his class. His midterm is not related to the lecture.
Jae's not a horrible person, he's just strange. In my opinion, his lectures are well taught--but only if you have a background knowledge in Calculus. He does mark harshly but as long as you KNOW what you are solving for, then it should not be that hard to fail. Overall message, do take him if you are skilled in math. Otherwise, just don't bother.
horrible do not recommend! he can not teach im sorry but its the truth
2.8/5? Are you kidding me? Jang is the worst lecturer I have ever seen. He does not know how to teach at all, and neither does he know how to question students in exams. Can you imagine that the average of midterm 1 is 51% and a half just withdrew after that? Students are not stupid. He should be kicked out of college. Avoid at all costs.
There must be a reason, other than being an instructor, that can explain why he is not kicked out. He is way far from being a good instructor, far from being an instructor. Low voice, no respect. If you check the course list of 2020 summer which is crazy, you can see almost all the other sections are full, but his are always available. Guess why.
one of the worst instructor in Langara , he spends his lecture time talking about crazy stuff rather actually teaching , the worst is from the beginning of semester he decides who is gonna fail his course no matter how hard you try , his exams are just 5 questions if you miss sth you would loose a big junk of mark.
You might think he is a bad person when you start a class with him. He is not a bad person I think, he is just strange. For some reason, I understood calc better with him than with any other prof at Langara.
not enough exercise. the test is impossible to finish. if you want to pass you have to work really hard.
His sound is low and the lecture is terrible, you will learn almost all by yourself. He never posts his note online for studying. The first midterm average is 35%. If there's a tag saying "not caring", I would select that. I'm just going to say that other comments about him that are rated "1/5" are all true. Just one word: Run! Run, my friend.
I won't say he is a bad teacher. He tries to make math class less boring. You have to be independent because he won't give you any practice. The grade is solely from 4 quizzes, 2 midterm tests, final test. I already took Calculus in high school, got and A. His test is not hard for me BUT the time he gives for his test is not reasonable.
He is the worst professor ever. I would strongly recommend you to not take him. he doesnt care about students and keeps on talking bs. He doesnt even have an atom of cooperation. DONT EVER TAKE HIS COURSES.
Worst professor. Avoid at any cost. Doesnt know how to teach at all. Never would give any instruction for quiz or midterm for second time even if you ask 2-3 times. Not at all co operative.
This is the second time I take Cal2. He does not care students at all. He doesn't like students to ask him questions. He teaches very fast, there are only 1 or 2 examples on each topic. The first midterm average was 35% and he didn't think that is a problem. The exam was not able to finish it. It was very long but easier than Miss Nguyens exam.
Never ever choose him! I again say NEVER! he literally solve 2 to 3 que for each topic and thats it! questions in exams are from idk where, which he never taught us. His voice is hardly audible and you cant understand properly.
The class is based on 4 quizzes, 2 midterms, final. He never posts lecture notes, lecture videos, practice exams, quiz schedules on D2L. I'm pretty sure nobody wanna take his class again but he is the only one who teaches Math1153 and 1253 at this time. You better avoid him at any cost or take Math 1171 instead. Trust me!
if youre doing the 1153+1253 path just dont do it, take the mdt or another math course to get prerequisites for 1173 or 1174, jae is possibly the worst prof ive ever had simply because his lectures are super dry and he also makes the quizzes and midterms too difficult for an intro to calc course, honestly shouldnt be teaching anymore.
I already took Calculus in my high school, got 90% with it. I'm confident with my Math knowledge. He seems only does teaching for his living. Dry lecture, talk about non-sense things in his class Lecture: Walkthrough some examples of new chapter. Done the lecture Test: Non-sense heavy (compare to his lecture) with unreasonable given time.
Only cares those students who would respond him in class. And he could spend more time of the class on talking about what he is interest.
He is the worst of all. In the lecture, he refuses to provide materials regarding tests. And if you ask him questions, he will tell you to ask other professors. His tests are made for not letting students pass. He is proud of his class average being below 30%. He will tell you that you are not talented to learn anything, pack your stuff and go home
He is the toughest professor I have ever taken classes with. His quizzes including midterms and final exams all were super difficult. His lecture materials dont match up with the testable materials. Hes a super tough grader, not approachable at all. He gives lots of questions in less time.
The toughest prof I have ever taken classes with. His tests all are super difficult, refuses to provide materials regarding tests, if asked questions, he humiliates students, His tests are targeted to fail students, wastes lecture times on ridiculous & nonsense Off-topics and on zoom inviligating rules which he was unhappy about. Dont choose him
He gives such little time for the exams/tests he gives. I took him last semester and dropped it hoping it would be a different prof but unfortunately he was the only one teaching. Also, he takes a LOT OF marks for no explanation; yet he doesn't give enough time???? Anyway, try to avoid him as much as possible if you can :/ goodluck
This is a classic example of how a bad teacher mislead students. His attitude toward students is disrespectful. The reason why he teaches students is that he wants to insult students. Enjoy your life and never take his class.
The worst professor I've ever had. He should probably consider quitting teaching because he is the worst at it. This guy has zero empathy for his students. He thinks all his students are God of Mathematics. Listening to his lectures is the hardest part of Calculus. He always goes off-topic and he refuses to provide appropriate course materials.
Talks about random stuff all the time. first quiz average was 21 %. learn it all on your own.
Avoid taking his class at all costs. His 10 marks quiz only has 1 question, the most difficult one from the chapter. He does not even gives marks for half correct answer. Take his class if you are exceptionally good at calculas. Lectures are way off topic. I have taken four calculas courses and he was the worst.
Doesn't say what you got wrong on midterms. You're going to have to learn on your own!!
This class is based off 4 quizzes 2 midterms and a final exam. Jae rambles on about random things in class when he should teach calculus instead. The lectures are also extremely boring. He also marks extremely harshly and does not show why you get marks taken off. Look at his name and run.
Lectures are terrible, only 2% of his classes contain any useful information. His exams are generally easy but some questions are weird. Was much better off doing problems on my own and consulting the internet, and I'm only passing because I'm teaching myself. Don't take him unless you have extreme work ethic and discipline.
You really need to pay attention and understand what he's trying to teach you. I honestly don't think he's that bad at teaching but he's not going to spoon feed you all the info. He actually explains the concepts really well if you're able to critically think and analyze problems. But he definitely comes off a lil aggressive and unapproachable.
Jae is uncaring and disrespectful towards the students. He gives the most basic examples in class only to throw the most ridiculously complicated problems he can possibly find. Along with that he gives too little time on exams and quizzes and loves bragging about low exam averages. Avoid him at all costs.
The worst professor I have met.4 quizzes and the highest average is 60%.2 midterms, one average is 50% and another one is 37%. He teaches the simplest things from the textbook and finds difficult questions for tests. He gave three exams in 2019 one week before final, and gave answers 2 days before final, then he says some answers are wrong. Lmao
What the average lecture looks like: 50% Random topic rambling. 20% Talking about how you were "taught wrong" in high school. 30% if you're lucky is actual teaching and relevant to the course.
Avoid at all costs - Rude communication style. Qs are a burden, no intent to explain - Prepare to self-teach material - Exam issues: heavy time restraints, Qs not covered, stringent marker, no feedback - Prefaced 48% midterm avg by relinquishing himself of responsibility - Uninterested in student success Jae limx+4(3/(4x)^3) - Jae -
Worst prof ever doesnt explain anything rambles on for half the class about irrelevant things. Midterm 1 avg 33% midterm 2 avg 33% final avg 42%. Doesnt care about students, barely responds to email, and if you ask a question in class he will find a way to make fun of you but still wont give an answer
just rambles about random things for the entire class does really "teach" just talks. his exam averages are below 50% I would highly recommend you to run as far away from this guy as you can. I have no problem with him as he seems to be a nice enough guy but he sure isn't a good teacher. You won't learn anything.
Class is rigid. Only one or two sample questions. Difficult exams and questions are not even mentioned. Doesn't care about students at all. The average of two mid are 32% and didn't exceed 40% in Final. If you are a good student and want to get a high GPA, he will definitely make you miss UBC or SFU. I got A+ from 1173, but only D in this course.
He is a sarcastic person, and likes to make fun of people. Basically this course is self studied. 90 % of mark depends on 2 mid terms and a final. I would never take his class in the future. He chit chat a lot, which is unrelated to the course. As an international student, I have no idea what he is talking about with those conversation. Avoid him!
Worst math professor Ive ever had. Does not care about students. Makes you look dumb when you try to ask a question. Most of his lectures consist of him rambling about random things. If you take him be prepared to learn everything by yourself. Dont recommend him at all, and especially if you struggle with math
Although he is a nice and funny guy, he isn't really that great of a teacher. His marking breakdown consists of only a few tests and they all have only one question on it so good luck with that. He goes on talking about random stuff for too long and doesn't teach at all sometimes. His marking is also weird as you have to answer in a specific way.
No idea why people blame him. He is not bad at all. I just finished the first mid-term, he put the same question in quiz 1 as the first question in the mid-term, he also talked about what would be on the mid- term. The average was 37%. He did what he could. People never think that's their own problems. It's not his problem if you don't study.
The worst person and instructor i have ever met. Teaches 1153 and think he is talking to math PhD. Hope you dont have any questions cause if you do he will make sure you know it was a dumb question. I absolutely despise this man
The course is not easy itself and almost half the class dropped it before finals. He took quiz in our first class and asked us to rethink about taking the course. Most class time was spent on explaining concepts which is good but expected you to understand that from one or two questions and solve almost all questions of that concept by yourself .
Do not take this prof. It's honestly better to drop the course and try to get another prof the next semester. If you don't trust me, good luck you will need it.
Horrible. He blames the students instead of his own inability to teach a coherent lecture. Take his course if you want to ruin your GPA and your chances at transferring to a university. His grade breakdown consists of a couple tests, all of which have so few questions that if you get a few wrong, you basically fail .
This guy is dead for me. This guy has less time left than queen elizabeth. So don't take this course xD
Sometimes he gets distracted during lectures, but he always makes it funny when he does. Midterms are pretty difficult compared to other sections and marking is picky sometimes. If you have good math knowledge you should be okay, but don't expect to come out of it with a high grade.
Half the class dropped out. With 12 of us left the midterm average was a 43 and he took 0 responsibility and basically claimed we were all incompetent. We had the higher midterm average of the 2 sections.
Lectures give little to no useful information, meaning most content has to be self taught. Quizzes and exams have so few questions that mistakes are fatal to your grade.
Doesn't teach concepts very well, and makes exams extremely hard. This guy is so uncharismatic. Run if you can!
I had Jae for the summer and fall term both for calculus which was a hard course. I was never good at math but he was pretty good at teaching new concepts. Cons: he doesn't post notes online so its important to attend (unless you can get notes from classmates) & hard to ask questions. Pros: Tests are straightforward and not overcomplicated.
One of the worst professors I've had in my life. The lectures were uninformative, the tests were unfair and Jang even lied about what would be on one of the midterms. It was so bad our class even began the process of contacting the LSU about how unfair his exams were in hopes of forcing the department to scale the grades. Avoid Jang if possible.
What a terrible instructor! I have never met a teacher like him in Canada. His favorite thing to do is to fail students, no examples, no practice, there is even 25% of final exam he nevery talked about in class. Those comments praising him I doubt that he wrote them himself.
He's an excellent teacher! Calculus can be tough, but he breaks down the concepts to ensure our understanding. The exams are so straightforward. Just attend his classes, take notes, and genuinely pay attention - even if you only go through your lecture notes, you'll never fail. Homework isn't mandatory.
no part mark on tests
His exams are easier compared to others. Just study the material he presents in class.
Nightmare Alert! Avoid for Your GPA's Sake! Let me tell you, he is an absolute nightmare. His personality is just plain bizarre! The teaching approach? Total disaster! He will ruin your GPA and all your university transfer plans. Do yourself a favor and don't put up with the frustration and disappointment he will bring
pick another prof if possible
It's sad to see that Professor Jang appears to favour girls over guys when it comes to helping students. This kind of gender bias creates an unfair learning environment.
Jang's teaching is average but his tests and grading are terrible. Take another professor if possible.
The ratings were true :skull:
In brief, he got a really strange personality and his tests and grading are just as odd. Best to avoid!
In my opinion, Jae is one of the best professors at Langara. He shows a genuine passion for math which inspires me to engage in his lectures and work hard. Quizzes are fairly straightforward and midterms are slightly more difficult. His grading seems to fall towards the extremes (0-20% or 80-100%). For those interested in math, I highly recommend.
Don't take classes with him if you want to pass. He is a strange guy and does not know how to teach. His grading is really tough. He teaches simple questions and gives much tougher exams. He is not energetic at all.
He has a decent teaching style but his strict marking does not correctly represent student's understanding of the topic. Many students (in my class) committed much time to understanding the topic deeply and could do most problems correctly, however, they made a mistake at the beginning (+/- signs, wrong graphing,...), and they received 0.
He is a nice teacher however he has strange personality and his grading schemes is terrible.
Would not recommend Jae. Wouldn't answer my questions and while I did well on his quizzes when I saw my first midterm I decided that it wasn't worth staying in his class. Had friends stay who wished they dropped him. It's really scummy that Langara hides the profs until it too late but its probably better to just withdraw/drop this prof.
A terrible professor who ruins your gpa completely
If unprofessional and ignorant attitude was a person, we found him. I'd rather eat a large handful of dirt and wash it down with conc. acid than to ever conversate with him. Infamously terrible rep. among all students and profs. School admins are trolling us with this one. Avoid at *ALL* costs. My condolences to the math dept. and his students
Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
Jae-Hyung Jang is a special man, he covers just the hardest problems. His quizzes usually consist of only 1 relatively difficult problem that covers multiple units. He reuses these same quiz problems for FREE marks on the midterms. (up to 40%) But, the other problems on the midterm are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I wouldn't recommend it for new learners.
Jae is kind of a funny guy. Your mark is based solely on 3 exams and a couple of quizzes, mess up one exam and it's hard to recover. Pretty much all content has to be self-taught as lectures hold little useful information as he teaches the weirdest, incomprehensible methods to solve problems. Stay away if you can.
The class I took was very hostile. Jang would frequently raise his voice, point his finger, and belittle students even for something as little as mishearing which definition he wanted and saying a different one. Very uncomfortable, high anxiety class which made it hard to attend lectures with an anxiety disorder. Only definitions, no concept work.
If you like math, like GENUINELY actually like math, then he will be a good instructor for you. Otherwise, if you're taking the course because it's a prerequisite / required course, this professor may not be the best as he grades hard and you will have to understand the material taught, rather than BSing everything lol
Not approachable, condescending. He assumes we all already know the material, and explains new concepts as if it is a review for everyone. Would not recommend.
The worst
Jang is one of the few math profs in Langara who enjoys teaching math. The ratings are not a clear representation of him. Although, he comes of a bit scary in the beginning, the way he approaches math is very practical. He will tell you exactly what you need to study in order to do well in the course. Follow exactly what he says to do well in class
Avoid at all costs
Avoid.
Wears a mask and every other word is an "uh" or an "um" making it very hard to listen, doesn't talk loudly either so good luck if you sit at the back. His lectures rarely have examples so reading the textbook or watching videos would be better (it's a math class, you need numerical examples to understand). A rock could teach better than him. Avoid.
bro the class avg was 30%... at this point its not the students its def the prof... bro cannot teach. a monkey would be better than him, his lectures don't even make sense half the time. how is bro still employed?
Good: engaging lectures, quiz/exam difficulty isn't bad Awful: marking on T/F or proofs is overly difficult (if you seem to understand the concepts he may dock you 20% of the total exam mark or the whole question arbitrarily), heavily proof weighted, time constrained, impossible question on a quiz (typo) removed it and gave no points. 30% mt avg.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is not good at teaching badly, his lecture notes are not helpful. The exam's difficulty level is way harder than his teaching, and he's not kind when the students ask questions they don't understand. I wonder how he's taught math at Langara for over 10 years. He doesn't deserve to teach students.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! ABSOLUTE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!
Worst professor. When asked questions, he is either dismissive or visibly annoyed, providing vague or unhelpful answers. His grading is excessively harsh and inconsistent, with little to no feedback given on tests. His teaching methods and lack of engagement make the class unbearable. Avoid at all costs.
will not relent to give you a zero for any errors on questions, barely enough time for exams, and doesn't post any practice questions. Exam difficulty is incomparable to practice material; only a few questions to cover whole units and barely any time.
Try to avoid if you can, however if you are taking his class then try to focus on the handouts given by him
Just avoid.
Avoid this class if possible. The exams are brutally difficult, with barely enough time and little relation to the practice material. However, the lectures are engaging, and unstuckstudy ai can be a helpful study tool. Just be prepared for a challenging grading system.
I do not recommend ever taking his class. Unfortunately he does not explain well. During class, he will pick some random archaic math problem to go over very detailed for 30 minutes and he will rush through some other random steps without letting people understand. When people ask questions, he can get angry sometimes and ask "why didnt you know"
Unless you already have a math degree and youre only here for fun, do not take his course. I dont understand how he still has his job.
very bad, please avoid him
Worst grader I've seen, either no marks or full marks on test questions. I've seen dictatorships with more flexibility with freedom of speech than Jang with his grading. Taking this class was a bigger mistake than the German President's Chancellor appointment in 1933...
professor is good . i would recommend if you have any background in mathematics.
Engaging lectures, tells and shows you exactly what you need to know for exams and quizzes. Not recommended to ask too many questions DURING lecture, but if help or clarification is needed, asking him outside of lectures is a BIG help. Genuinely cares about his students, even if he doesn't show it.
Extremely poor behavior. Class was unreasonably difficult due to a lack of teaching ability and poor test structure. Peers often reported feeling sick from anxiety over class stress due to poor treatment. Avoid at all costs.
terrible. not even unstuck ai can help you if u have a prof like him.
Just no words avoid if you can
No words to say avoid if you can.
unstuck ai told me to drop this class... i should have listened. AVOID!
Going in I was scared but tbh he's not THAT bad. Explains concepts alright but is more or less yapping on a whiteboard. Midterms are literally just the quizzes which are taken from the $80 online textbook so I'd suggest you buy that if you want to make your life easier. There are definitely better profs but not as bad as the reviews make it out.
Lectures are somewhat unorganized and heavily focused on theory. Definition questions on quizzes and the midterm are strict, one wrong word can cost you half the mark. He would spend a lot of time explaining concepts, which is more confusing. Quizzes and the midterm are short, so it's essential to practice on your own to manage time effectively.
Its better to buy a textbook to study and practice by yourself. Literally only need to attend class to write down definitions concepts which will be on quizzes and midterm, otherwise self studying is better than listening to his lecture and be confused
His grading scheme is hilariously strict. You're usually either simply right or wrong, and there's no in between, no partial marks. He teaches like a robot that has no awareness of his surroundings or his students'.
On quizzes or exams, It does not matter whether the principal you used is correct whether from the textbook or notes. If you show your work correctly and get the correct answer, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Marks WILL be taken off if you do not solve the question like Jang. Small mistakes will cost you avoid at all costs @anyone who wants to learn or do well
Do not enroll in any of his classes if you care for your mental health. I use to love math and this guy completely ruined it for me.
He is a really unique prof, be prepared if you choose. But once you get used to the way he teach, he is really good and smart. Really helpful, can really learn a knowledge from an other perspective. And he is also an interesting movie fan
Please do not take this person can really ruin your transfer plan.
The lectures were not very engaging and often felt unorganized. Explanations were sometimes unclear, and it was difficult to follow along without relying heavily on the textbook or outside resources. Assignments and exams didn't always match what was covered in class.
Stay away. Even if you need this course and are desperate, pick a different prof
The dude should be in a research facility instead of teaching.
Get ready to walk out the room learning absolutely nothing! This guy honestly has no idea and I am awed as to how anyone learns anything at all from this guys lectures. He rambles all class and explains nothing of what he is doing. Works on the board silently and expecting you to just understand.
Not a good teacher at all, do not take his class. He writes stuff on the board and expects us to understand after saying a couple of words. He is off topic half the time and during the first day, "warns" us about how many people have failed his course. Save yourself the trouble and take another prof for this course.
I enjoy his classes, but I see why reviews are mixed. Instead of examples that prep you for exams, he stresses the why behind theorems and proofs. It deepens understanding for me and I find it really helpful, but without doing lots of practice on your own, quizzes and exams can feel much harder. Side note, he has a weird sense of humour.
He's a questionable prof. When he handed back one of my quizzes he called me stupid. He makes you question your ability of how to do math. DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM IF YOU WANT UR MENTAL HEALTH TO BE GOOD. He writes the questions down and solves them while explaining but erases the solutions right away.
Not approachable at all, and is unempathetic towards students. Tests are ridiculously difficult as well. Please avoid him at all costs.
Saw him in the halls the other day and he cussed me out under his breath while walking by. I asked him what he said and acted like he said nothing. The character of this man is inhumane, he is an animal who hates anyone that he teaches. If you don't want to learn calculus and be disrespected take his class.
This professor doesn't teach at all. He just faces the board, mumbles to himself, and never engages with the class. His explanations only make sense to him, so everything had to be self-taught, which was really tough with other classes. Taking this class felt like a complete waste of time and MONEY.
I really like math for my whole life but after I took his class I feel like shit. please avoid!!!!!! if you don't want your grade mess up :)
If you have plans to transfer to UBC, this man right here will be the death of all your hopes and dreams.
