he's notes is clearly, but his way of talking is....JUST NOT NORMAL.....
He's a very decent and kind man; his tests are easy and he marks fairly.
Easy course... easy to understand! Take him!
Nice guy, willing to help you...tests come from ur notes & good final
No Comments
Great Prof, I really love the notes and it is cheap $1 for 20 pages of notes you will never find it man. Other prof teach the same course will kill you b/c you need to copy it from the black board will make you tire. Overall he is a GREAT PROF MUST TAKE!!

da prof rocks! easy exams & assignments! looks very funny though, but sometimes tries too hard to make us laugh. very helpful.
He teaches very clearly, so that I never misunderstand anything. His tests and exams are fair and reasonable.
Stick to the notes, attend classes to fill in the blanks, receive A on report card. It's all good.
he is a great prof.

this guy is cool. too bad none of you guys can take course with him coz he is retired. follow his easy notes and get A or A+ if u try.
He's an excellent prof. Easy A+ or A. Just stick to his notes and you'll be fine. No need to buy the text either. Easy tests and exams. Assignments a joke!
Mr. Chawla's tests are based on his notes: Know the notes = know the test. He is a fair marker too and will make adjustments when necessary. Teaches straight from the book. The better 1505 professor. Naturally funny too. Retired but still teaches.
...no.... can't understand him, can't read his notes, class has to constantly correct him! He copies everything from a completely horrible textbook (that i agree is not worth buying) and beyond that does nothing.
very hard to understand what he say, but if stick to the text and follow all the problem he present u will get a good mark..
Very good, understanding person.
The best prof for this course and probably any stats course. Provides his own copies and notes to study, study from them and you'll ace the course. I switched just to be in his class. A veteran prof, he's the best you'll get !
He takes up problems in class that people dont know and his notes are sometimes difficult to understand. If you don't do anything in that class like myself it can be a bit of a challenge with the tests. But when i studied for that exam it was very easy.
he knew his stuff but i had no idea what he was talking about due to his accent
HE0EZ OK
He is no okey..it is very hard to understand what he say..
he is very nice and helpful, the tests are a breeze- just study practice problems assigned, easy mark to bring ur GPA up
This guy in a very good prof. He is approachable and understandable and is willing to make the grading scheme in the format that best suits your situation. Concentrate on his 100 pages and this course is easy with him. If you get a chance to pick between him or anyone else - PICK HIM.
Midterm is okay. Final is hard. Wording of problems is VERY DIFFERENT from his notes/text bks. If your lucky you get a cheat sheet. To do well in this class you NEED to ATTEND all his classes and do the assignments.
Worse prof ever. Guy cant even talks can hardly heard him, gives out the wrong sln's, never reply by email or aviliable for office hour's for incoming exam. Makes a easy course into a very hard course just b/c he cant teach. 90% of ppl was falling a sleep and dont know wtf his talking about, he just like talking to him self.
i think he is funny :)
Good Prof. V. Clear notes. Takes the time to have both tests and quizzes so you have numerous chances to safe your mark. Best Math prof that I have come in contact with so far.
after spending the first 1/2 a year understanding him he was okay but confusing. thought i failed, passed with a 60. get help from t.a's not him but hes okay.
Actually he is a very lazy professor, is really not responsible. never reply your e-mails. Help nothing on your question. If you have to take his class, you can ignore him, try to learn by yourself by reading the book.
Attendence is recommended. Purchases the exercise book is also recommended. It is important to drop down his notes into the exercise book, and to study urself. Do not need to buy the textbook, a waste of $$$. Hard to listen to what he says, just copy and notes and study urself is enough to get a good mark.
It would be very nice if we responded to emails, spoke in an audiable tone and provided the same quality lecture notes online that he does give for $10 when he says they are the same. This is really sad, i've learned the course on my own but WOW, it would be nice to get something from a professor. Why do i need him again?
if you want a easy mark take this course... and copy the notes from some one...that is what he does copy from his own notes... you can study on your own, that is what i did and I got an A... but make sure you do the assignment and fold it the way he wants..if you don't fold it right he won't mark it... WIERD... I KNOW...
He's okay. Easy quizzes, easy exams. It's not rocket science either, so if you can't grasp the basics, you shouldn't be in the class and further attribute your failures to his teaching. His speech is bit unclear yes, but his lecture notes excellent. He didn't make the final exam when I was in his course, the other 1505 profs did, which was hard.
Easy course to get an A in. Quizzes and tests are easy marks (straight from homework). Exam, which was written by the other professors, contained questions that I've never seen before though. Material was basically the same as in high school. Just do the questions he assigns and you should be fine.
Really knowledgeable, but impossible to understand. He has a VERY strong accent. Copying the notes is usually sufficient. Quizes and tests are based entirely of homework, so it is not too hard to study.
Can't understand a word he says. The notes he writes on the overhead are in his handwriting, which is impossible to understand. His examples and notes are straight out of the textbook. Going to class is the biggest waste of time. The material itself is not difficult but he jumps back and forth from chapter to chapter in an unorganized manner.
This professor is absolutely useless...I have sent him 4 emails over the last week asking for confirmation of the details for the midterm tomorrow to no avail. The supposed "website" is incorrect/doesn't exist. Strong accent and mumbles incomprehensibly, and his notes are illegible...does not respond to questions..all in all avoid him if possible.
not that good. a self study class basically. if u like math, then ull live. if u dont, good luck
Really Good prof! Very helpful and fair marking. Excellent hand-written notes! Goes over homework questions in class if requested or will help you after class too! :)
NO enthusiasm whatsoever...but seriously just go to class copy the notes and do the problem sets for all test/quizez/exams and u'll be fine....hell i got an A!! :)
He has hand-written notes which he uses to teach, but you must get used to his style of writing, otherwise it'll be difficult to read/understand. As for tests/quizzes, they are relatively similar to textbook problem sets.
Awsome prof!Just stick to the notes and practice the problem sets and u should be fine!
Awesome Prof, if you practice doing questions from the textbook then you should be fine. Because of the course and Dr. Chawla, I plan to take additional courses in Math
He is a nice guy and very helpful if you go to him BUT awful teaching skills!!!If you can, please avoid his class because you cannot hear a word he says and even if you do,you won't be able to understand bcoz of his accent.Has hand-written notes that are difficult to read and all examples he does are in the book:S.The quizzes were easy but tests wer
He is a really good prof, however you have to sit in the front to understand him. Otherwise, his problem sets are easy to follow, his teaching method isn't the greatest. I got a B and calculus isn't my thing.
Sit at the front if you want to understand wht he is teaching as his writing is very tiny! Tests and quizzes are fair and the grading policy is best so far if compared to othr sections. He is helpful and will welcome questions outside the class. But, beware he gives atleast 10-15 pages of notes every class lol
He is a good prof, the only trouble could be his heavy accent, I was used to it after couple of sessions. It's better to attend all his classes since he teaches a lot each time. If you do the problem sets and study fairly you can get a good mark. I found the quizzes very helpful.
Strong accent. Hard to see slides if not in center, middle/front of class. Teaches well. Goes over many problems in class. Quizzes based on practice problems or similar. Overall good teacher.
I graduated from York several years ago and still remember him well. Along with Poliakov and Silviu Guiasu, among the best math teachers in the dept. Took two courses with him. He gives you his notes. Great guy!! Take a course with him!!! He wants you to do well!
He's VERY clear with some concepts and with some he's not so clear. He takes time to take up as many questions as you want to ask him. U just write them in a piece of paper and give it to him. His tests are fair (1/2 trippy questions but rest are right out of the hwk) I got an A+, DO YOUR HWK. PLEASEE. slacking will get you nowhere-with any prof
His thinking clarity is impressive. He is very calm and systematic. Does not burden students with excessive material. I gave him a hard time yet he was very supportive. I can't judge him from an academic perspective but he is VERY good and fair as a teacher. His accent is troublesome now and then. The only good math teacher @ York I have had sofar.
He is very calm and teaches from his own notes. AND his tests are supposed to be done in pen.....REMINDS ME OF INDIA!!
Can't understand one word coming out of his mouth. Can't read his writing either. probably a good teacher, but i don't know cause i seriously cant understand him. LEARN ENGLISH before you teach at a uni level.
He is a great teacher I took with him 2 courses Math 1131 & Math 1540 for math 1540 he uses the textbook he give you hw every week :) the tests are fair based on what you studied and for Math 1131 he gives us his notes which is great and helpful he is a great teacher if I had the chance to take any other courses with him I would definitely do that.
Awesome prof! he is really amazing, just follow his notes and do all practice questions assigned by him,you will be fine :)
I know he says text is not required, trust me you will do really well if you buy it and do all the practise problems! I did terribly on the first midterm because I didn't buy the book, but on the 2 midterm and the final, the textbook helped me a lot! And yes, you cant understand a thing he is teaching so you will have to teach urself the concepts
Soooooo boring. Luckily you can rely on the textbook to teach you the material. His tests are all based on the textbook anyways. They're also extremely easy.
amazing prof! not difficult to understand his accent and he is very nice and wants you to do well. His notes are amazing and his tests are fair! Best math teacher i've ever had and i hate math. this man taught me so much!
He's very organized and clear as a prof! His tests are fair, most are homework and assignment based. He's also very approachable and has a lot of patience in him. he's a really good prof!
Worst professor I have ever had. The most annoying quality about this professor is the fact that he has an EXTREMELY EXTREMELY THICK ACCENT making it difficult to understand his notes are copied exactly from the textbook and he often even copies from the textbook wrong. If you have this professor I would recommend trying to transfer classes ASAP!!1
He is a great professor for calculus. He gives problem sets that are similar to the questions on tests, so if you do your homework, come to class you should not have any problems getting an A.
Prof. Chawla is helpful if u show and ask that you need help. Talking n discussing your situation (casually) will not hurt you. I got a B+ just by going to most of his classes and practising questions he assigned.
If you are a self-learner than this class will be easy. Prof. Chawla doesn't teach beyond the textbook. I have approached him numerous times with problems, and he constantly just refers me to the text book without explaining it himself.
I couldn't understand a word he said. His writing is also awful. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I spend hours teaching myself out of the textbook because going to class is pointless when you can't understand this teacher.
Horrible teaching, but easy course! This prof made a whole exercise booklet for the students for only $10, and this was all we followed, so it was very easy in that way. However, it was very difficult to follow what he was saying.
It's a complete waste of time , he is hard to understand and says nothing but the examples from the test book . self study is better than going there
Only does examples as his lessons, with minimal instruction... even the examples he does are rushed over with minimal explanation of in between steps; and when asked to clarify the exact same thing is done over again. Learn the material yourself, at home! Also, the online assignments are a saving grace; 'practice another version' gives the answers.
He's hardcore old school, no leniency at all. Most boring class ever and didn't learn anything in class. Just writes the exact same examples from the text book. No point of going to class. Learning on my own and with a tutor. Exams are somewhat easy but still hard and exams times are tight.
If he's teaching, do not take the course! His lectures are boring, he just reads and uses examples from the textbook. You would assume that questions on exams would be the similar to questions in the textbook. Nope! Questions on exam aren't even close to the Web assignments! Wasted my time and money!
very dull and boring in lecture. does not explain concepts and only does textbook examples for his lessons. the course is pretty much self-study because his lectures are useless.
I took MATH 1510 because I didn't take any math after grade 11 so everything was new to me. Prof Chawla does not explain concepts. He literally rewrites the textbook into his notebook with little explanation. If you've taken gr 12 math, you're fine. If not, study on your own and do the homework question, you'll be in the clear.
Always take notes, textbook is useful but he gives additional examples with extra steps. Took his precalc class and it was really easy. You'll end up with a good mark if you take notes, and do all the practice exercises.
this prof is absolutely terrible !!! he does not teach properly and expects students to learn all concepts by themselves. Lectures are useless and is no help when you ask what to study for tests and exams. I was soooo lucky to pass this class even thought i studied the whole summer.
The professor goes really slow which is sometimes good for difficult topics but a bit annoying at times. His notes are confusing and he contradicts himself a bit. Other than that he is an alright professor but it's sometimes not easy to understand the content from his lectures.
Do not take this instructors math class. Over 85% of my current class is about to fail. There is a reason why the final exam is worth 70%. You can't hear him explaining the lectures because of his very, very thick accent. You can't see what he writes on the board because he scribbles. You are expected to maintain pace with him. Do not take math.
A good prof just attend the classes properly and lectures and u can get a good grad if you have questions just ask him he is a nice prof
Worst prof I've ever had at York. You can barely even understand what he's saying.
This has to be one of the worst Math Profs at York right. Doesn't explain nor he teaches well. Almost 85% of students has either drop it or about to fail. The course itself is too hard to much for students who lack math.
Very attractive and exotic looking professor for his age. The course itself can be hard if you don't practice.
It's a tough course and professor chawla expects you to know your stuff but other than that he is a very good and caring person unlike any other professor.
He is very understanding and just a really nice person. He understands your circumstances and has a heart unlike some professors.
This prof is one of those who care A LOT, trust me - A LOT when you get to know him. He gives you feedback and help you with any problem needed. He is one of the most respectful person I have seen at York U. Take his class, study, you will never be disappointed
Professor Chawla is a very good professor and he explains the material thoroughly and if you have difficulty understanding the material he will help you by explaining it. Other than that just do the work and you'll get good grades. He helped me a lot with pulling my grade up. Math was my weakest subject but now it's one of my strengths. Thanks Prof
I'm sure he means well but professor Chawla is very hard to understand in a lecture environment because he's a very softspoken man with a thick accent. If I'm being completely honest I started skipping his classes because I found them to be a sort of free period anyway, I couldn't hear him, plus everything he wrote came straight out the textbook.
terrible teacher, he speaks in mumbles and does not explain well, never really does anything besides read of the projector, assigns hundreds of questions just for test review, his chalk is not visible unless you're ten feet from the board, class is sleep inducing
if you click practise another version, grade and show answer it will give you some answers, just not your own. i recommend making a friend or two so they can check their alternate versions for the ones you cant figure out, me and my friend gave each other answers every week lol
He is a nice guy. Too soft spoken. Just copies EVERYTHING right from the textbook so there is no point in going to class. I took this course as a refresher since I've been out of highschool for a while. Math isn't my forte either but this class might as well be online. He doesn't deviate from the textbook at all. No extra tips are given.
This professor was amazing! I don't care what anyone says. He was awesome!
Heavy accent, illegible writing on paper and on chalk board. Class is sleep inducing, one of those proffs who explains things the hard way to make things seem more difficult. Seems like a nice guy just takes math too seriously. Ends lecture 1/2 early consistently probably because hes bored af too. have fun.
Chawla means well however he's extremely difficult to understand. He speaks low and his chalkboard writing is impossible to read. He follows examples straight from the book so honestly you don't learn much in class. Extremely boring and difficult course.
MATH 1510 can be a hard class no matter who your professor is, as important in all math courses you must practice to do well. Prof Chawla is a very understanding professor, he is accessible outside of class and is easy to talk to during any difficulties. I highly recommend this professor.
He's a nice guy. He might be a bit slow in class but gives proper notes. If you attend the lectures most of the things will be easy. However, if you miss a lecture, the notes won't be available anywhere else. If you revise properly and follow his guide an easy B+ or even an A+ is guaranteed.
Probably one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. He does have a PhD and he is very knowledgeable about the material, however he is just bad at teaching. His writing is illegible and he doesn't really teach. He just answers the questions that are presented to him. Lectures are very sleep inducing, heavy accent. Profs need teaching degrees.
He is one of the worst math Professors I've ever come across. I didn't miss a single lecture and it was of no use. He clarifies nothing. His notes are too fast-paced and that would be okay if his writing was eligible which it ISN'T. He doesn't clarify the concepts neither does he specify what he wants you to know for the midterm.
It is impossible to hear him if you are not in the first row. Very monotone. Nothing online you can take pictures of his notes after class. If you are not good at math try someone else.
He is not that bad. Though I had the basic math course with I did well. But people taking math for the first time must not take him as this might not be beneficial for them. People saying that he is worst must have not encountered any other math professor who teaches horrible.
I genuinely wish you the best of luck if you attend a class under him. He is smart and he knows the material inside out BUT he SUCKS at teaching it. his notes are copied straight from the book, he reads straight from the book, you cant hear what he is saying due to a very heavy accent and super low voice. his writing is ineligible. PICK A DIFF PROF
He posts a 20 minute lecture thats supposed to cover 2 lessons and calls it a day. Basically reads off notes that were copied from the book. Get ready to binge watch khan academy
need to buy the textbook on webassign, exams and assignments are on webassign, exams aren't proctored. accent too strong, can't understand what he is saying in lectures. handwriting is hard to comprehend. replies to emails fast and is very nice, but try to pick another prof if u aren't good at math.
Although the professor has a strong accent and a low voice, he can be very helpful. He replies to emails quickly and is always available to help. Compared to some other courses, the course load wasn't as much and everything was done on webassign. There's only 2 tests , 1 exam and 10 assignments throughout the course. Overall, he's a good professor.
His online lectures are recorded and he is rarely an active teacher if you don't understand a concept the first time your on your own. I self-taught entirely through the textbook because he rushes through lectures and is technologically challenged. This class is easy, but if you depend on a good lecturer he is not for you.
