he's very helpful and organized so you know exactly what to do and when it's due. He knows what he's teaching and treats everyone fair and equal and if you can't get his class, he will refer you to another good math teacher too
He is very enthusiastic about teaching math and he loves what he does. He is willing to help if you need it BUT you will EARN EVERY point in his class there are no GIVE me points!! Prepares his students very well for exams!
very helpful, clarified what was due, and what would be on test. Very good explaining everything to the class, and if you needed help he would help you...not bad looking either
Very good teacher. He is young but he knows his job very well. He explains everything very clear.
He makes everything easy to learn, I actually understand algebra now.
Take this teacher if you want to pass Algebra. He expalins procedures in simply ways that you can understand and retain for the future. Very helpful, if you need additional work in tougher areas.
this teacher is very helpful. He explains everything so well. try hard and he will be every helpful.
Awesome Teacher!
Awesome teacher!!!!
He is the best Math teacher anyone could ask for....Easy as hell!!! If anyone fails his class its not cause the work is too hard is just cause ur too lazy....
I am actually learning!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best amth teacher I have ever had!!!
Best teacher I have ever had!!!!!
I love that he was always willing to answer any questions and take extra time to help. He was a great professor and didnt make me dread going to math for once.
hes awesome
GREEEAAAT TEACHER!!! AWESOME!
GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT
he's an awesome teacher and always helps everyone
great teacher and he really explains everything
He's one of the best teachers! He's young and interesting. I took him for 2 math classes and wish he would teach upper level math. He actually made it fun and I hate math.
this teacher is great. he is bery helpful and will spend extra time with students who do not understand the material. i highly recommend this teacher...plus he's hot!
This teacher is the best teacher ever! He is wonderful at what he does. He helps you so much and takes the time to make sure that you really understand what it is he is teaching! He gets you ready for your next math class. OVER ALL HE IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER VISTA HAS TO OFFER!
Mr.Roy is a great professor! He is very helpful and available for students, should you have any questions. His explanations during lecture are very clear and healpful.
i took him for remedial math and he was great, but now for college algebra, he totally changed, not helpful, clear or understanding
Excellent teacher - just know that you have to work for your grade. He is fair and honest, and more importanly keeps you posted in your progession throughout the semester. As you complete the remedial classes it will all come together in Alegbra.
Matt is a very good Instructor. He really knows his stuff. You can tell he enjoys math.He always let you know where you stand and he is there for you to ask questions. You can even call him if you need get stuck on a problem at home.I have taken him for 301 and 302 and I am taking him for 303.I will take him for college algebra is I am able to.
He is so good that I can't get in his class, always full. I thought I was in the wrong clas the first day. But amazingly I ended up getting an "A". All I have to do now is get a spot in his class Arggggg
He explains things very well. Avg amount of homework for a math class. Always availbale if you need extra help.
Well, I just started the semester, but Im in love with him. He has taught me new ways of doing simple problems, that I wish I learned in Algebra II back in highschool. Looking at some of these other comments, I feel lucky that I was able to have him as an instructor. He told me he taught higher math levels, and I hope to get him for Calculus <3!
Nice instructor. He offers help if needed. Turning in homework is a must. He has pop quizzes; His tests are easy if you complete the homework on time. He works with grades for the students best interest.
Really good teacher. He takes the time to make sure you understand, and he's always available to help you outside of class. Also, he's very promt with grades so you don't have to sit there worrying about what you got on a test.
If you already know math ... take him. If not, forget about it!
This guy is probaly the hardest grader ever. never lets anything slide. kinda freaky and takes his job way to sirously. take leslie schendel if you want a good teacher, and she is freaking hot
Very detailed when he explains problems. Is willing to spend one-one time w/u if needed. Uses different color markers 4 u to understand the problems & formulas, 2 get answer. One of the best teachers I've has thus far. I like Math more after I understood it. I attended 0302-03, he did a GREAT JOB and b/c of it I got A+ in both courses :). vmm
He makes Math fun to learn. and hes so down to earth when teaching.
Mat Roy jaideep is seriously one of the best mathematics professors I've ever had. He gives out quite a bit of work, but it has never felt like "busy work". It helps you learn the formulas and procedures by doing them. His class is a bit difficult, but not if you do your work, and he is always willing to answer any questions you have! Great prof!
He is great he wants you to understand and will always help.
Mr. Roy is a very good teacher. He enjoys what he does and makes things easy to understand. He is very detailed and organized. If you need extra help, he will make time. Highly recomend.
helps very little confussing
Mat is an excellent professor. I enjoy his approach to teaching Math, he keeps it fast paced but will slow down if people need help. Personally I wont take any math courses at Vista unless he is teaching them.
Thought he was a student before he walked t the front of the class & started introducing himself. Great teacher, very clear, very helpful, always on track, and one of the best I've had.
Fantastic Professor. Best math teacher i have had. Makes material easy to understand and is always willing to help those who don't get it. Must attend class regularly and keep up with homework assignments. As long as you do those two things you should have no problem in this class.
Mat is a good teacher and willing to help whenever is necessary. Calculus is freaking hard, but he makes you understand it. He even types up the notes for you so you can focus your attention on the material rather than having to copy what he writes on the board all day like most professors.
This guy is passionate about math. He makes understanding Calculus easy. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed, but he is not an easy 'A'. You have to do the work.
do not be fooled!!!! this professor SUCKS!!!!! unless you like a CHALLANGE then go for it...he started with 24students now he has 4 in my class what does that tell you he gives too much homework and if you dont do the homework you wount get the tests and even if you do the homework the tests are just hard.
Extremely hard..You're gonna end up dropping unless you're a math geek
Very clear with explanations and teaching, fairly easy, will work with you until you understand the material.
Good teacher, you can tell he loves math and does anything he can to get you to understand. He moves through sections a little too fast and can make it hard to keep up with the notes. You have 2 test, take home test, and a final. Overall good teacher, just ask questions if you need to.
Mat is willing to help whenever you need it. Calculus II is a killer when it comes to integration, but practice is what helps. He'll type up the notes for you so you can focus more on getting the material down rather than trying to write down everything he says.
I took Mat for Calculus 1 and I'm glad I did. While he does grade pretty tight, it's necessary to get proper technique down. His notes are clear and he'd help with any questions you might have. Don't forget to do the homework even though he doesn't grade it. It helps immensely on tests and quizzes.
Mat is an incredibly hard grader but in the end it's worth it. I passed his class with a C and felt like I was on top of the freaking world to the point I've decided to minor in mathematics. Cal II is a tough cookie but once you get past the middle part, it really is NOT that bad. Best of luck, he's tough but you walk out having learned something.
Amazing at explaining things. Very organized notes. Tells you exactly how to do something.
Very tough, but does offer tutoring. Mat is a good teacher if you pay attention and take notes. Just listen to what he says and ask questions when you have them... he's not that tough.
DO NOT TAKE HIM....if you are taking it cause you have to and are not really interested in it DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS...he grades REALLY tough!! Yes he gives you the notes but it still is extremely hard...it's a must to do the homework or you will not understand it!! He does not give you an actual review...just a list!! GOOD LUCK TO WHOEVER TAKES HIM!
not a good professor, really hard! and hard to understand! his reviews are nothing like his testS!offers no extra credit. I should have dropped the class:/
great teacher.goes through material slowly.. constantly ask if we understand what he just did if not he will do the step again..helps a lot with any question we need..enough tests and quizzes so we can drop lowest one at the end.overall great teacher supppper happy i took him
Mat is beastin! I was afraid of calculus before this class, and now I am going to take him for Cal II! HE goes over everything clearly, and just make sure you do the additional exercises, hw and show up to class. I got 100s on exams, highest grades i ever got in math! You will be able to differentiate in yo sleep lol
100% pure math professor. His tests are fair but make too many mistakes, you'll fail his tests. Always do the additional exercises and hw to do well on the quiz. Study and do the review chapters or review your lecture notes, quiz, a.e, and hw to succeed on tests. Let's you have a cheat sheet and formulas. Go to his office hours for more questions. For other students, if you think his class is too hard without putting your effort, then you're an idiot.
HE IS AWESOME!! he is very clear and his notes are awesome. He goes over each step and makes sure you know what your doing. I would deff take his class again. Plus he is kinda cute!! Seriously though....HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER!!
Mat obviously LOVES math and tries to encourage the class to love math too. Available to students who need help, but also emphasizes that his class is a COLLEGE LEVEL CLASS so the student must take responsibility for the class. Homework is very important to pass tests (although does not get graded). Overall, this class was challanging, but do-able.
Very good math teachers who will help you understand the material properly. Gives really good notes and lectures. Do your hw and you will get a good grade!. Only downside is that he's a bit of a hard grader so avoid making small mistakes or they might hurt you. i would still recommend him if you really wanna learn math!
He was a great teacher. I heard from everyone in the class that he was hard but I made an A so I don't know what they are talking about. Just do the homework and reviews and you'll pass. Ask for help when you need it and he helps alot.
I took Mat for Calculus 2 and he is a very hard grader but no reason you shouldn't pass if you do the homework and ask questions. He has office hours every day of the week and even gives you his cell phone. I would take him for another class.
MR ROY IS A HARDCORE MATH GEEK:) AND HE IS A REALLY GOOD TEACHER, BUT HE GRADES REALLY HARD GRADER.IF YOU MAKE SIMPLE MISTAKES HE WILL TAKE OFF POINTS.IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN MATH TAKE HIM. EVEN THOUGH I FAILED HIS CLASS,I STILL LEARNED.NOW I'M GOING TO RETAKE CALCULUS, BUT NOT WITH HIM. I LEARNED A LOT OF SHORT CUTS, SO I'M GOOD.
He is extremely hardcore about math, a true math geek. If you are not one to do homework though do not take his class, homework is essential to learning the material and doing well on the test. If you truly want to learn Calculus well take Mat.
This professor has a great passion for math and when I say a great passion, I mean a total math geek! (But in a good way!) He is very young, and knows how to teach very well! Absolutely loved how he taught because he breaks it down step by step all while going at a good pace. He is a very organized instructor and an awesome professor!!
Mat is absolutely one of the best professors I've ever had. Not only does he love what he does, but he is able to teach math better than any math professor I've ever had. He is not easy by any means, however if you do the work as he suggests and go to him during office hours, you should make no less than a B. Again, he's a GREAT math professor!!!
True Math Geek! Knows the material he teaches inside and out. Always happy to help but you got to ask for it. Do your homework and class work and you will be in good shape for daily quizzes and tests. Best teacher I have had in a long while.
He's so great !
Mr. Roy is a very good teacher and very helpful, although he does move quickly through the material. He has been my favorite math teacher out of all the teachers Ive had, and I don't really enjoy math!
Mat is the best math teacher I have ever had. He explains things clearly and will help you think through your mistakes when you need help...but he can't read your mind. If you need help, go to his office hours and ask him. Do all of the homework/quizzes and attend every class and you'll do fine. Excellent teacher! I'm taking him for 2414!
Good professor for those who are math majors. Do the hw, go to his office hours if you have questions and his lecture notes and the book is the golden keys to learn the material. Read the book ahead of time to get the taste of the materials of what he'll cover. Take home quizzes are very tough so start on it asap. Good professor to take and his letter of recommendations will open the doors to anyone who wants to be a math tutor @NVC.
Soo this guy is definitely a math genius! But his class was somewhat hard :/ He does go somewhat fast but I guess only because there is a lot of material. He says he teaches calculus II as if we are to take calculus III. Gives out pop quizs and the middle of the semester they are take home. Great for MIM students but maybe not so much for others
The best math teacher I have ever had. I learned so much. His lectures are clear and concise. Homework, quizzes and exams are fair. You will learn a lot and will feel very proud of yourself that you understand math! I never missed a class, did all my homework and got an A! He is amazing!!
great professor.. super organized, and makes sure everyone understands. there is classwork and notes daily, so attendance is a must. exams are easy if you do classwork and exam reviews.
He teaches well but the examples he teaches is class are so much easier than the ones for homework or on a test. He does not go over any of the homework if you have questions. There is a take home quiz every week which is due the next class so you must goto every class. He is a very hard grader. He must think he is teaching at Baylor not NVC
Best math teacher EVER. Took precal with him first, and I got a B. Hmm. Then I took calc 1 and 2 with him and got A's in both. Never thought I'd be able to do it. Be prepared to work for your A; he is not forgiving of laziness.
Great teacher, I have taken him before for Calculus II. He challenges his students to think rather than give wrote review exams. He gives quizes every week, four exams and a final. He also gives you access to lecture notes for class.
He teaches a tough class but he does an excellent job. He gives hard problems but you will really learn from it all. He is a really nice guy and fair guy. The class work might seem scary at first, but he will help. Do your homework!
please dont take him unless ur super genius in math He teaches well but the essayist examples and the tests are extremely difficult he gives tricky Qs you have to study from hw, ch. review additional exercises note, challenging problems quizzes made F worst teacher in my life ever wasted my time class average first test F 37% second test 31%
In my experience, it is nearly impossible to not learn from this professor. If you are willing to work hard (at least 8 hours of studying per week) and have an honest interest in this subject, you should pass regardless of mathematical aptitude. Prof is helpful, easily reachable and has good personality. Would recommend if looking to learn subject.
Best Math prof alive. Its incredible how much this man knows. Be prepared to study though, and dedicate a lot of time. Always available and will do whatever it takes to make you understand the topic. NO EASY A!!!!
I took this teacher for my calc 1, calc 2, and my linear alg, and the only reason I didn't take him for calc 3 was cause he didn't teach it in the summer. Honestly, the workload is grueling, but he is the best math teacher I've ever had. If you get an A in his class, you can sit back and KNOW that you deserved it. Recommend 4 all math majors!!!!
He is a GREAT teacher. Always willing to help. He eats, breathes and sleeps math! Study and do your work. Quizzes are a pain, but gives reviews for teats. STUDY, do your work. He uses a packet for teacher he made, not the book. Book for homework only. I would take him for 1325 but he is not teaching in spring. GREAT TEACHER!!!
By far the best math teacher in San Antonio
Best MATH teacher ever
Great teacher! honestly really easy! If you do the homework you will understand what you need to! The quizzes are a little challenging but the test are EXTREMELY easy! He drops a few low quiz grades. The final was EXTREMELY easy and i guarantee you will make an A! He also does an amazing job of getting you ready for upper level math classes.
I took him for Calc I and although he is a good and helpful professor he is an extremely picky grader and you will lose lots of points for small mistakes. You will deff learn in this class but even if you are good in math, you will most likely be fighting extremely hard for that A.
Great linear algebra teacher, if you don't do well in this class then you need to reconsider your major as the subject isn't hard and the professor makes it easy if you try.
Once again, Northwest Vista impresses with instructors in higher math (calculus and above). Linear algebra was a great step towards modern algebra, and Mat totally made it understandable. He really helps you and wants you to know the material and application. As long as you keep doing exercises, the quizzes will be a snap.
Very great instructor. He really knows his stuff, and wants students to learn. People who say he's too hard, too demanding,... they just suck at math. Cal 1 was easy, and Roy made it very interesting and relevant.
He was great, very helpful and his lecture notes were great! Knows what he is talking about and is a very smart guy, just study a lot of little things for tests because he can be picky sometimes
Mat Roy is a brilliant mathematician. His expectations are too high. Our class started with 20+ and only two people passed with C's. I would have gotten a C but dropped because I can't afford that on my record. He is VERY helpful in office hours. Calculus 3 is a weed out course but 2/23 with C's is an EXTREME. Learned a lot though!!
He's very helpful, always willing to answer questions, I myself suck at math, but I wanted to pass and very helpful with me. Great communication, and simplifies things so people like me can understand. If you get the chance, take a class with him as the professor.
Best math teacher I have ever had. I always look forward to his class.
Matt Roy is an amazing instructor. He loves mathematics and you can see it in the way he teaches. Homework is not mandatory but it helps with the daily quiz. While he is not the easiest teacher(a bit of critical thinking), he is always willing to help and by no means wants you to fail. He is by far the best professor I've had.
Great teacher. However, the class can be difficult because the man speaks in proofs sometimes and the tests are nothing like examples and quiz questions.Willing to help during office hours which helps a lot. Be warned: do not mess around in this class! You will have to earn your grade. I've taken him twice and at most 30% of students make it.
Honestly the best teacher i have ever had, I'm taking him again in the fall. if you pay attention and take notes you're going to do great. Easiest way to pass is to show up and pay attention
This professor provides a level of instruction easily equal to that of any top-tier university (I don't make that comparison lightly). Without question he is the finest instructor at this institution.
Not very helpful in his class. His lectures are very hard to understand he over thinks his work and "butchers" almost all the time. Quiz every class, gives no partial credit for even trying on a problem. Very hard grader. Tests are written out no multiple choice. Develops on harder ways to teach. Wouldn't recommend...
A very tough instructor. He thinks everyone in his class should be a math machine, because that is the only way to pass his class. Don't take his class unless you are good at following long lectures and long ways to resolve the problems. He wants his way ONLY. Wouldn't recommend unless you want to withdrawal. Teaches at an advanced level.
This professors is probably the top math teacher at NVC. If you struggle in math don't take him. He is at another level and expects that from everybody. Tests are difficult and grades very tough. He is willing to provide help. If you're not serious about math don't take him.
Make no mistake, this class is tough if you are not into Calculus and are required to take it. But isn't that the point of "higher education"? This Professor can clearly explain the lesson and will work through any problem if you ask. You get the grade you earn in this class! Better not miss the lectures or you will be lost. Great Teacher!
This instructor is by no means, easy, but does everything he can to make sure he is available to answer your questions. I'm actually pretty slow when it comes to processing math, but I think his enthusiasm and passion for the subject motivated me to keep trying though I was struggling. He teaches fast, and gives you the tools for success.
He is a great teacher. Be sure to do the optional homework in the textbook and you will pass with an A.
I took this guy for cal 3. He's extremely nice and helpful but overwhelms you with homework and quizzes every week. His exams are tremendously difficult and feature conceptual questions you never cover in class. There's never time to *understand* what's going on because you're so busy trying to do the homework and quizzes. I do not recommend him.
COMPLETELY agree with last comment. Professor is very nice and willing to help, but do not take this class unless you have nothing else going on. There's tons of homework and 1 problem quizzes every week. I did every problem assignedoffered and sought extra help, but in the end nothing paid off.
Great instructor, covers material efficiently & effectively, we lost more than half the class by the drop date. Class is not overwhelming difficult if your algebra skills are sharp and remember a instructor's lecture assumes you have read the material about to be covered and practiced examples beforehand.
Very hard
He expects you to be able to do the homework and learn most of the stuff on your own. He won't take homework for a grade so be ready for that. He expects you to read the book on the section before coming to class.
Matt Roy is a Fantastic teacher! His teaching is very detailed, but the class is a lot of work if you plan on taking high math classes. I would suggest Matt Roy if you really want to learn and understand math. If you are looking for a blow off class do not take him.
Offered help if you have the time to go to office hours. If you are busy this semester I highly recommend postponing this class or choosing another professor. He will expect you to live and breathe this class and if he think you are not giving 100% he will let you know!
Great professor couldn't ask for better presentation of the material. Cal II is by no means an easy course you will need to practice, make mistakes, and reach for a deeper understanding of the material. Matt will help you in any way possible, and is by far one of the best instructors at NWV. If you squeezed by Cal I expect it to be harder.
Mat Roy is probably the best Math professor I've ever had. He is extremely intelligent, and you can tell that he really loves Mathematics. Be aware though; in Calculus II he grades very hard, and you will have homework after every class. He does have office hours. Oh and he's very hot, so you won't have any trouble paying attention in class!
He's a really solid and respectable guy. If you look at his syllabus you'll know exactly what to expect from him. He only gave out extra credit for one part of the first exam, other than that the grade is usually 15% from the take home quizzes that are fairly tough (he drops a few of them), 15% for each test (4 of them), & 25% for the final (easy).
Rewarding professor, cal 3 is seen as the easiest calculus out of the 3. Is very clear on what he expects, graded a little too tough imo, but what can you do. Hardest math professor I ever had, and this is after making straight A's in upper level math at Texas A&M. Make sure to study and understand the concepts, gives out sections to study for tes
Dont Take him if math is not your thing.
The best math professor i've had thus far at NVC. He does very well explaining every detail, but the course is very hard. The examples he does in class is no where near as difficult as the ones he gives on his HW. His lectures and notes (you have to purchase) are very organized which i LOVE. He is a little pretentious at times, though.
Hi is so strict. The exams are super hard so I recommend dont take his class.
Extremely tough grader. Very hard test. Unless you are unstoppable at math don't take this class. High percentages of students from all of his classes have to drop. High wash out rate for no reason.
Roy is a wonderful professor. He has a high expectation for his students and it shows on his tests and quizzes. . People complain for linear algebra in particular, but I was at his office every day and there were only a few people I saw regularly. If you make an effort in the class he is ready and willing to help, don't take if you want an easy A.
If you want a math class that, you know, you actually learn in, take Roy. It's not an easy class but that doesn't mean it's impossible. If you want an A, you have to do your work, study, and go to office hours if needed. Honestly, I have such a great understanding of so many concepts because of this man. If you want an easy A, go elsewhere.
The guy is very passionate. U use his own crafted notes throughout the semester, to cut on copying, as to pay more attention in class. Look, these STEM math courses are never going to be easy, the material is tough. Linear algebra was the hardest thing. He does a good job at trying to make it digestible. Good teacher, tests u hard. GO 2 OFFICE HRS.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's very caring for his students, and is clearly extremely passionate about his job. He puts in a lot of work to help students learn, has lecture notes available for purchase ($10), and is extremely approachable. Easiest professor to follow along and pay attention to, gives real time feedback in class.
He cares a lot about the work and it shows. Most importantly, he does a great job at teaching the material. You must be ready to work and must show up in order to do well. This is where math will start to get challenging and glad I took him because of how well he teaches. Take him if you actually want to learn, especially if you're a STEM major.
Mr. Roy is very passionate about math. but that is all he will have if he doesn't lose his attitude.
A person with absolute mastery of Math. A focused professional. In his class, you have to complete homework by the weekend every week, online. He explains well, and is good. Take him, but also work. Don't stress Math, it is a good subject; ask questions, clear concepts, and use the lecture notes, and practice. Don't buy the Book, use lecture notes.
I took him for Math 1414, and he is a good professor.
I'm going to be honest, I was @ Ut last term, and I studied Differential Equations, plus Cal based University Physics I-II. In that we studied Quantum Mechanics, some of the harder classes @ Ut, but they were easier than his Linear class. He's nice, plus cares, but he likes to challenge before you actually learn the material, which is bad avoid
He actually teaches the material. I left actually knowing how to do everything and it set me up perfectly for cal I. However, the class isn't easy and if you're looking for an easy pass it won't happen. Take him if your major is anything related to math. If this is your last math class then you may want to look else where.
This won't be an easy A. You'll have to go to office hours, ask questions, do all the quizzes and homework, and NEVER skip class. You'll learn so much and in detail. Professor Roy is an excellent lecturer and a fervent mathematician. His notes are just amazing. The first 3 exams will be the hardest, and it'll get easier after that. Don't give up!
Arguably the best math teacher I've ever had. You will learn what topic he's teaching and will prepare you for the next class better than anyone else. However, his class wasn't easy and makes you earn your grade. If you're serious about math or a stem major, TAKE HIM! You will learn a great deal and he'll make sure you have a solid foundation.
Had to take this class online because of Covid. Lecture videos over an hour long, theres a quiz(or 2)almost every class, reviews barely helped. A tough grader and exams have challenging questions you wont see on quizzes or hw. Majority of the class (3.5 hours) is spent solving problems with peers, not him teaching. AVOID if you struggle with math.
took online due to covid. there were always hour long lectures to watch before class, and during zoom we mostly just did group work. didn't work very well for my learning style. he takes math super seriously so i would only recommend taking him if you are needing to go up to cal 1 or above. tests are very difficult and only 10 or so questions.
Class was not bad, but online math courses are not able to instruct the same way as in person in my opinion. Mr. Roy is an excellent teacher, but I would have liked to have him at the actual campus in a real time class. Not super hard, but challenging at many times. Study for the tests, questions are different than hw. Tests r what got me.
Professor Roy was great at explaining the material, but he is an extremely tough grader. I failed the class by 2 points and I took the class when covid first hit and we switched online. I retook the class with another professor and received an A. Like I said, hes a very tough grader and the tests were difficult.
Very knowledgeable in his felid. Provides strong foundation in the basics. However, I really recommend taking easier classes on top of his. Especially if you struggle with math because you will have to spend lots of time making sure you know the stuff in and out. He is a very hard grader. Had I hard time feeling comfortable talking to him.
This guy is God-awful. He thinks he's the math God. He just throws you in a breakout room because he doesn't want to teach the class. You would be there for an hour doing absolutely nothing, and he would call you out to the entire class when you were doing the same exact thing everyone else was doing. I'm just trying to save you from taking him
If it werent for Mr. Roy and his passion to teach math, I wouldnt be as successful as I am. If youre lazy and dont want to put in the effort, find someone else. Sure, hes a tough grader and he expects a lot of his students, but hes the best in the business. He structures his course to prepare you for harder material down the road.
Took class during a summer semester. Wouldn't recommend because it was very fast paced. Wish we had more time to go over the material but that's no fault of the prof. A big part is watching lecture videos before class! if you dont, you wont pass. He took the time to explain things well or as well as he could and offered tutoring time. Good teacher
Professor Roy was a very difficult class that I took. I attendant touring every week in the math class and I even asked for help from him but he kept telling me "you need to attend the math lab more" he as a professor really didn't understand that I was struggling really bad and I was trying everything. He just didn't seem to care much.
All I have to say is good luck! You are going to need it. The drop rate is high so save your W's for when you transfer.
I loved having Professor Roy, my grade does not reflect it because I did not apply myself but I liked having him as a teacher. Seemed very knowledgeable and made sure to ask if anyone was not understanding.
He is a great professor that is very passionate about what he teaches. He is very responsive online. I highly recommend him, but you have to put in the work. Take his lectures to heart, study, work together as a class, do the homework. Otherwise, the exams will most likely destroy your grade. It is difficult, but YOU can do it. He is there for you.
Professor Roy is an amazing teacher who has intimate knowledge of the topics in the course. He has an amazing presence in the class room, and he also has extensive office hours outside of class if you need extra help. He is very patient and able to break down the material as much as need. I would highly recommend Professor Roy to anyone in STEM!
Great
Exams are hard to pass
Hes really nice but the class was intense
For the people who value learning, take P. Roy. He is one of the best resources available for making significant strides in learning your field. His classes are clear and capable of giving you a deep insight into the underlying mechanics of many subjects. If developing a skill set for future success is a priority to you, P. Roy will help.
This class was awful, I took it in spring 2021 online. He wanted everything done his way. i would ask a question in class and then would answer me as if I was stupid. the lecture videos before class were about an hour long each one. office hours he was nice and actually helped you and didnt make you feeel dumb for asking a simple question.
Professor Roy teaches straight to point, easy and simple, and does plenty of examples to make sure you understand the topic. He gives great feedback on exams and quizzes are fairly simple to the lectures. The only reason I got a C is that I took him during the summer and it was hectic for me as I had other classes too. Overall he's a great teacher.
He treats you as if you are in high school. Doesn’t understand that we pay to be here so we can do with that as we please. I’ve turned in every assignment for his class and miss maybe 3 days and has treated me like a non-adult.
Good luck!
I took Roy for this class in Fall 2019. He's exactly what a mathematician should be. Don't expect an easy grade, but he is extremely helpful and does what he can to ensure success. One of the best professors I've had, even now that I'm at the University level. Work with him, and he'll work with you.
After the first exam, Prof. Roy gave an orientation on tips/tricks to study for future exams and afterwards, the whole class's average went up! He really cares about you doing well and made it a point to tell me that he could see my discipline, regardless of my grade. I would 10/10 recommend going to his office hours because it's truly so helpful.
I took Mat Roy's 1414 class, and I would highly recommend it! College algebra is the most important class you can take on your STEM route since all the classes afterwards are built upon algebra (Calculus, Chem, Phys). You need to have a solid algebra foundation and Mat Roy can deliver. You will learn the algebra you need to advance from his class.
Took all my math courses from him. He loves math. He could probably be somewhere else making more money but he teaches because he's passionate about it. Respect. My favorite thing about him is that he doesn't just teach the material but discusses what to do and how to study so you can learn it better. Super friendly, patient, and helpful.
I specifically signed up for Roy's College Algebra class because of his responses on Rate My Professor. He is a fantastic teacher and as someone who needs to take math through Calc 3, I for one am glad that he takes his job seriously and goes above and beyond with his teaching methods. Very approachable and easy to contact out of class.
The ideal math professor. Thoughtful course design. Customized lecture notes with hand-picked exercises. Manageable workload. Dynamic and engaging classes. Efficiently and thoroughly explains challenging concepts and "special cases". Most supportive professor. Utilize his office hours. I received a solid foundation for the rest of my math career.
This professor has true knowledge of math! His in person lectures were very methodical so that the Math was easy to understand. He is easily available if you did not get the concepts during regular class hours. I would take him again in a heart beat!
Overloads lectures.
On my 3rd try of 1314, wish I found Prof Roy sooner -an excellent approach to teaching, he helps you rediscover how to learn(think new skill & not memorization) -easy methods of identifying problem -simple & clear explanation of his approach to solve a problem -Teaches unique ways to recall steps to solve it -get out of it what you put into it
Fantastic teacher, really cares about math, very accessible outside of class. That being said your grade is very test heavy and the tests are challenging. You will have to spend a lot of time on studying to do well in his class so plan your schedule accordingly. No corrections, retakes, or extra credit.
I took Professor Roy for both Cal I and Cal II. He has become my favorite math teacher. Some say he's a hard teacher to take, but the students that say that haven't taken University Level classes before. He's a great communicator, his lectures are very well though through, he is always willing to help, and appeals to a wide range of students.
I took both Cal 1 and Cal 2 with Professor Roy. I struggled a bit mastering the material in Cal 1 but passed with a C+. I continued to Cal 2 with more determination and effort. And I passed with an A! Roy has well-explained and knowledgeable lectures, help is readily provided, overall best math courses I have taken. Greater appreciation for math.
Took Calc 1. Tough class, but that's what one should expect taking a STEM level course. Expectations are clearly set on day 1. Definitely take advantage of office hours for help. The Math Lab was pretty useless to me other than providing a spot to do homework on campus. Don't be afraid to ask questions even if peers tell you not to!
Difficult to do well in this class. 3 exams+1 final that makeup 80% of your grade. Few people pass exam 2, doesn't curve scores or offer extra credit/correction on exams. Had classmates who dropped classes/jobs to keep up. You'll definitely learn, but if you have other things going on & value your GPA... take it during the summer or something.
Amazing professor! Explains all subjects clearly and deeply. Reviews claim harsh grading, but that's not true. He lets you debate points back for tests, if you can justify your argument. Has office hours Mon-Thurs and is very encouraging. He is also happy to answer homework questions before lectures.
Very passionate professor. Amazingly capable of helping all his students understand the subject matter, so don't be afraid to ask questions. He will do his best to help you learn, even if it means teaching some basics again to make you more comfortable with working on the new subject. His grades do rely on tests heavily, so spend time studying.
Get ready for a notes packet! Oh man prof Roy is incredibly passionate about math and numbers. It's almost cute how excited he gets over theoretical math. very willing to work with students, loves participation, and I recommend you bring some highlighters to his class. The work is hard, but he makes it a lot easier with how he teaches.
The habits I learned in this class taught me how to organize my work in order to prepare for the class and exams. This class requires organization and plenary of time for study. Without that; the class will be failed. Professor Roy does an excellent job of teaching and emphasizing what needs to be done.
When I first took Mat Roy, I was a suboptimal student who lacked prior knowledge and study habits. I feel I left his class having nearly overcome both of these flaws. Although I would not recommend Mat Roy if you're looking for an easy A if your goal is to learn and comprehend the material, few professors hold a candle to him.
Decent professor. He is very passionate about math. The class is fast paced. I would not recommend this professor if it were your first semester of college. You will likely get behind/ feel it is more difficult.
He is an excellent professor, unfortunately I could not finish the course and had to drop due to my grade being so low, but his lectures are very good and straightforward. One thing I do not agree with are the take-home quizzes. I feel it is better to take quizzes in person, like the first 10-15mins of class and then correct it outside of class.
Wow this class was an absolute beast! I spent the majority of the semester coasting with a C but everything came together and I finished the class with a B! You can expect to be challenged by Roy but he really just wants to make sure you know your stuff. The best advice I can offer is don't overthink things. I'll miss you Roy!
I would really recommend on taking this professor! He is a great lecturer! After you take a class with him, you will not only memorize the material of the subject but, learn the material really well to your understanding! This class has definitely taught me how to study efficiently for a class as well. Work hard in his class and you will succeed.
Professor Roy is a brilliant lecturer who really makes you learn the material. The class is challenging but worth it - stay on top of the work, use the textbook and resources like Unstuck AI, and you'll do great. It's a tough but rewarding class.
Professor Roy obviously loves math. His teaching style isn't great for everyone. He says go to office hours. I tried going but he sat in another room and it felt awkward to go over to the office and ask especially when another prof was in there. He does very surface level examples in lecture. Look at the textbook for better examples instead.
Professor Roy teaches more than just mathematics, he teaches you how to learn. In his course he provides a wealth of resources to give you all of the tools you need to be successful. He promotes proven metacognitive study strategies that help even beyond his class, often incorperating them into his lectures. I highly recommend professor Roy.
Best math professor I have ever had. Phenomenal at breaking down complex concepts to make them easy to understand. Super organized canvas so you know exactly what we are doing in class and when we are doing it. Goes very in depth with topics to make sure they are understood. Not an easy class, but you are given the tools needed to succeed.
This is the second semester that I have taken prof. Mat Roy and it has been some of the most valuable time I have spent in higher education. The class is extremely organized and well thought out to where new material starts to feel intuitive to learn. You will not regret taking his classes if you care about a future in mathematics/STEM!
Tests make up 80% of the total grade Weekly: 2Hw (20 questions) and a quiz, but they only make 20% of the grade :/ More than half the class withdrew from the class If you need a slower-paced class, then it isn't for you. You have to be proficient in previous concepts to keep up. I wish I had withdrawn from day one, but I'm close to passing 🤞
Professor Roy means well and provides the tools and strategies to succeed, but we're expected to all be natural geniuses. When I went to his office for help, it was usually kind of awkward and not very helpful. Plus, I had to study so hard to barely even earn it. :-/ Honestly, I'm so glad it's over. I'm taking Calculus 2 with a different professor.
This is my seccond semester with Roy, and I hope to take many more of my math classes with him going forward. His class will definitely push you to grow and improve, but he provides all the resources you need to succeed. He always provides great feedback, and his lectures are top notch. Take Roy if you want to grow, the challenge is worth it.
No matter the level of math you are in, PLEASE take professor Roy! He is truly an amazing professor, he teaches not just math, but what it means to be a great student. The amount of work he gives out might seem daunting, but it truly reinforces good study habits that he always advocates for. He really cares for his students and their learning!
