His tests are essay, but they aren't hard. As long as you take notes and pay attention you'll do well in his class.
The reviews for the tests are very helpful. I didn't read the chapters at all, just read what was on the review for the test and made a B in the class.
He refered to the students as being stupid. He was abnoxious and immature. He curses too much.Yes, his class is easy, because he thinks that HCC students are not capable of handling a real college course.
I think that he was a great teacher. His test are very easy when you study the notes from his lectures. I recommend him to other students.
in summer session, there are 3 exams-50M.C, 1 summary about the website, 3 books summary, answer questions from a book. Tests are easy. The teacher himself is not interesting to listen too. In fact, it's a very boring class. However, he let the class off early than the usual time. He restricts certain freedom of the students such as sleeping. d
He is a good teacher overall. The way he cruses while teaching the lesson which makes everything more interested

GOOD PROFESSOR MAKES HIS CLASS INTERESTING. HE HELPS THE STUDENTS A LOT. IF YOU GO AND PAY ATTENTION TO HIS CLASSES AND ALSO DO THE HOMEWORK AND LECTURES YOU WILL BE OK.
Dr.O; Dr. Olivares; Dr. Jaime; Jaime ; Sir, whatever...you are one heck of a professor! i'm currently taking your class at 11:00am-m/w ... You are cool, better than St. Thomas, i should say.....
He missed a lot of class. He cursed a lot. He gave me a freakin B!! I thought i would make an A. Oh, and he didnt give the summer session, any reviews for the tests! For History II, he is not good.
F-ing awesome Proffesor! He's top notch.
i wonder who the dumb **** was, who went to the head department person... damn it! ruined it for all of us.. dumbasses i swear.. he's a good teacher...
LOVE THIS MAN AND HIS CLASS. I TOOK HIM TWICE CAUSE HE WAS GOOD HE ALWAYS KEEPS CLASS INTERESTING. AS LONG AS YOU STUDY THE NOTES YOU WILL PASS THE CLASS.
Dr.Jaime Olivares is an awesome teacher who actually makes history really interesting and fun to learn. Study the notes for exams and the assignments are usually book readings without any shortcuts so it's best to fully read them. His grade system is different, so every assignment counts if you want to make a good grade.
He makes the class fun and interesting, however he likes to give a lot of work, way too much. too many papers and eading. He used to be easier 3 years ago, but now he has change his method by giving extra homework. What happen Professor??

Really funny and passionate. Makes the class interesting! His essay tests are much easier than the multiple choice, for the most part, you dont have to read the text book, but he does assign outside reading that you can't get away with ****ting, you will not do well if you dont go to class, if you do, you're fine!!!
He is very good professor. He makes this class fun and clear. You must be in his classes to do well on the tests. For history 1301 I had to read 2 books besides the text, which I didn't read because I followed his lectures. For 1302 I had to the read The Jungle, and other book, but it is like 180 pages.
First, you do not need to buy the book. Second, it is all about the lecture. The exams are not too hard because he always gives a great review. Overall, he is a FAIR teacher but,I do not think that he has a lot of respect for HCC students.
Easy class just take notes, and yes u dont have to buy abook except 1 book, The one that he wrote about the Presidents good/bad because you have to write paper about it. No attendance sheet. Hate people that came late. Class was Fun. Will take it again but too bad im done w/ it ;D
guys, guys listen to me. Even if you want to pass his class or make D- don't take his class. He is so boring and he knows that. So he comes up with some worst jokes and laughs himself. His class is like a prison. one day he let us go early and everybody were jumping on ther feet. He doesn't know how to teach at all. If you miss one class it's over.
I never read the book. But, I never missed class either. Taking good notes is a must!!! His essay tests are so much easier than his multiple choice. There's no reason to not get an A in his class. I got 100 on every test.
A very good professor, one of the best at HCC Central. I highly recommend every new student to take his History classes. he's just badass and accurate.
His class was interesting to me. Especially since I have not taken history since 2002. His test were different at first, but once I saw the format it was easy. Yes it is important that you take notes. You have to remember you get what you put into the class.
this was an easy A over the summer. just listen and take notes, study the notes, and you will do well. there were 3 tests, no final, and one small book that you have to read and write on. tests are multiple choice, but you still have to study. i highly recommend him.
great teacher but you must take notes & attend class to pass. Does use some profanity but in life don't we all. Keeps things interesting. Just make sure you come prepared & on time. I made an A
i love this guy!!! he's funny, clear, and keeps it real. He's an excellent professor. i highly recommend him!
Overall,5/10
Piloted a new course with class. rearly met in class. Alot of outside time. 2 book reviews and major paper. Treated us like upper level students which is rare at community colleges. I would STRONGLY recommend this class and TEACHER. Dr. O is the man!
goog teacher
He made me fall in love with History all over again. I never really liked American History as much as I did World History, but sitting through his lectures made me appreciate the history of this country. His lectures, although it may be biased, were very enthralling. I actually WANTED to go to class when he kept on cancelling it. I love him!!
hes a good professor very interesting and he knows his stuff i got a b
MR. OLIVARES IS A GREAT PROFESSOR. HE SHARES ALOT OF FUNNY STUFF WITH THE CLASS. HE IS VERY GOOD IN HIS LECTURES. BE PREPARED TO TAKE ALOT OF NOTES IN HIS CLASS (LIKE ABOUT 10 PAGES PER LECTURE)BUT THIS WILL HELP A LOT WITH YOUR TESTS. HE ALSO HAS 2 BOOK REVIEWS. VERY EASYGOING TEACHER
GREAT TEACHER!! MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! IT'S THE KIND OF A PROFESSOR THAT IF YOU GO TO CLASS REGULARLY AND LISTEN TO HIM AND TAKE GOOD NOTES AND DO YOUR WORK (WHICH HE DOESNT ASSIGN HW JUST TESTS AND A PAPER OR 2) YOU WILL GET AN A. HE DOESNT PULL ANY TRICKS ON STUDENTS, HE EVEN GIVES A CHANCE FOR AN EXTRA CREDIT. HE MAKES HIST INTERESTING
i took hist 1 and 2 with him. He is just great!!!!
Professor is cool as hell as long as you dont mind a professor who swears. There are alot of notes to take, maybe 3 or 4 pages a day, but it goes quick. If you go to class regularly you'll be alright. We had 3 tests, 4 textbook assignments, and 1 novel to read. GREAT teacher to take over summer. I got an A.
this professor is not someone you want to take. Jamie is not a genuine person, he comes off as a sly ox type person.
seriously he rocks..i was never interested in history in my life but with him i honestly love attending his class and taking notes..i wish i took him for history 1301..every student should take him he's GREAT
Olivares has 2 masters degrees and a phd i expect him to be very sly and cunn ing.The winter course was hell i felt like i was going to have a nervous breakdon with all this history being shoved down my throat. I passed with a C. He know his stuff just dont take it for winter mini.
MR. OLIVARES' CLASS IS VERY INTERESTING. I ALREADY LOVE HISTORY BUT HOW HE EXPLAINS IT, IT LOOKS MORE EASIER.......WRITE WHAT HE IS SAYING BECAUSE THOSE SAME WORDS ARE HELPFULL FOR THE TEST,BUT JUST KEEP IN MIND....YOU NEED TO DO WHAT HE ASSIGNS YOU....I GOT A C BECAUSE I DIDNT TURN A PAPER IN. NO LATE WORK FOR HIM....
He is awesome. I was hesitating about taking Hist 1301, but Mr. Olivares is awesome. You can easily get an A, just do your work and do it well! He offers good study guides before the test. I slacked off this semester (my own fault) but he is an easy prof. and I have actually learned a lot in the class
Superb teacher! U must attend class or have good notes. Most questions on his quiz/tests are discussed in lecture. Brilliant knowledge/perspective of history. Makes it interesting. Won't tolerate nonsense(cheating, sleeping, etc)in his class. Very respectful of students. His class was a pleasure. 5 stars! Thank you Dr. O!
=) VERY GOOD INSTRUCTOR!
Dr. O is a great professor I took him fr sum 1 and summer 2 his test are multiple choice take good notes and you should do well on the test. He's cool and makes history interesting not boring and dry like other history professors. I highly recomend him hes rea good and make sure to do yur work and attend class, take notes and u shuld get an A or B!
everyone passesI made a D he dosent like sleping it reflects in your grades,
Being someone who has never studied american history in their life, Dr. O made it so interesting to understand. He doesnt just lecture straight through the whole time, he makes it interesting by giving examples that relate to our lives. Take his class he was awesome
even tough, he gave us four books to read, that was very hard because you have to centralize in these books and never let it for the final...he is a very good instructor... he makes us understand very well the america history and he is funny too.. i liked his class instead of we have to do a lot of works...
Hard! Very hard! We had 4 books. The way too much homework and reading! It was hard to understand him talking because he has very monotoneous voice. Few of my friends failed this class with him because he is strict(no make-ups, no late assignments).I would take somebody else, if I knew he was this way
do all of the bookwork and essays ahead of time. you can turn them in as early as you want. everything on the tests is on the study guides so study it. i missed a test, an essay, and barely did any of my book questions and still passed with a C. i wish he would cover more military history though. overall very intelligent and a good teacher.
DR. OLIVARES is kinda funny and very sarcastic which made history fun! His lectures are very interesting and his test are multiple choice but they are not that easy, just do the work that he says in advance and do the review sheet and actually study and you will do fine. very smart teacher!
I TOOK DR. OLIVARES HIST 1301 &1302.HE'S A PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD. HE GIVES YOU MANY ASSIGNMENT AND EXPECTS YOU TO DO IT THERE'S NO SLACKING OFF. ALL IN ALL HE'S A GOOD TEACHER, YOU ACTUALLY LEARN AND HE'S FAIR WHEN IT COMES GRADES NO SPECIAL TREATMENT HERE* ONE THING IF YOU TAKE HIM TRY TO BE IN CLASS BECAUSE MOST ON THE EXAMS ARE ON THE LECTURE.
this teacher is mean he is also boring and he tends to wonder off from the lesson booooooo!!!!!!!!!
He does not got by the textbook. Most of all your notes come from the lecture and the book talks in very little detail compared with the lectures he gives.
Dr. O is one of the nicest professors i have seen. He's tests are not hard and on that he gives you extra points. You have to be in class and you should do fine. He is a very caring professor. The assignments are also not very hard; you should not plagiarize; he gives you a very good marks.Recommend to all
Dr. Olivares makes History interesting. He is there to help you anytime you want. One can easily make A if attends class regularly. Very good professor.
His lectures are good. He makes history interesting. His test, however, do not go with his lectures very well. If you read the book plus attend class regularly, you will be fine. The papers and reading material are easy, just turn them in ON TIME. No late work accepted.
Dr. Olivares ROCKS! his class is super easy. just pay attention and take good notes you should ace his class. lectures arent boring at all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
very good professors, one of the easiest history this semester...just finish your assignemts..40% of the exam material are take home written assignments and we had a chance to earn up to 44 extra cerdit marks..recommend to all
very good professors, one of the easiest history this semester...just finish your assignments..40% of the exam material are take home written assignments and we had a chance to earn up to 44 extra credit marks..recommend to all
I feel the was a great teacher. He made rules a stuck to them.
Dr. O, was one of the greatest professors I've ever had. PAY ATTENTION to his lectures, and show up every day or he will drop you also DO NOT show up LATE or you will not be allowed to take test. He adds humor to his lectures but stays on topic. Do his work, respect him for his time, He is a Ph.D. after all and STUDY STUDY you should be fine.
Dr O is super easy! He curves grades by as much as you need to pass. I never opened the text book if you just study your notes in class you should do good. Make sure you do the other reading he asks for. If you do not they will bring your grade super low. GREAT TEACHER!
HE IS REALLY SO HARD.
OH MY GOSH! A Really cool professor. Teaches very clear, test are some what challenging, but if you listen to lectures, will do good, gives curevs and extra credit. Teaches at a high level!
Very good teacher! Tests are easy if you follow his notes. Textbook no needed! Notes are interesting, a lot of writing. I am glad that i took this class! Really doesn't follow attendance!
I took his Summer online class. It is not an easy A, but I would recommend him.
he is not an easy proff. especially if engl is the second language. he is very hard to follow too much writing.and extra workouts.i dont recommend this prof to anyone.
omg!!!!this man is unbelievable if you want to PASS...DO NOT take him, esp,. for summer he does not CARE about whether you pass or not,he is hard!!!!!!!
took during summer 1 online. this class is not hard, but is time consuming. this class should be taken by it self.
his class is not too hard if you are hard working, i got an A this class. I want to sell the book of this class, any people want to buy contact me via email [email protected]. the book is 90 percent new, there is no damage at all.
I took him for the summer session at UH. If you take him then you will learn alot because he is a Great Professor. However, I had to work extremely hard just to make a B+ He does not give extra credit or curves. If you want to get an easy A or B+ then DO NOT take him. If you love learning and just care about passing then take him. 2 Books to read.
Took him during the summer session at UH. Great teacher! However, If you think you will make an easy A or B then forget about taking him. Its Hard. He makes history seem fun but its definitely NOT easy! Dont take him if you want a class in which you will effortlessly make an A or B
He is a really good teacher. Loved his class. I still see him around and stills says hi. Get in on his good side, because he will do you favors. Wrote me an excellent recommendation and I got a 5g scholarship
I took him for 1301 & 1302. Loved the class even though he was had and I made a C. Curved grades a few times if everyone did bad. If he likes you class, he will help you out. So talk to your classmates and get them to act right and you just might get a 20pt curve on you test. Highest pt curve he gave one of my classes was a 28.
He is kinda of hard. But, i managed to get a B in his class. You do not have to read alot. Just partner up with some one and you will do just fine.
Very minimal work needs to be done. 3 exams, 10 primary documents, 10 article summaries. Light load of work. Took it online, and had a lot of free time. Easy class though teacher isn't very interactive with students though. THis class is very clear and easy and doesn't bury you with assignments.
I took 1302 online and it was surprisingly easy. He's not much help to the students, so don't think you'll get a timely response when e-mailing him. Besides the exams, as long as you complete the assignment and turn it in on time, you will get 100s on everything. Pair up with someone from your class and it's even easier!
Do not take him. He does not answer emails timely, no interaction with students. You read the book, 10 reader assignments and 3 tests. Poor excuse for a teacher.
You must attend class every day or u will fail. It is kinda hard to understand him because his english is not all that great. I emailed him and he did not respond either.
I took prof.Olivares for the Fall of 2011. This class was very easy,I don't understand the comments about not responding to e-mails. He responded in a timely matter to all of my questions and I had many. Could have done better but do to working and family I waited until the last minute to complete assignmente Just make sure you turn in wrk on time
He was a great instructor. His English is fine, being from the united states and all. Go to class and you'll be fine.
Just finished 8 week session online. Instructor was cool. Lots of writing assignments, but with a little effort you'll get 100 on everything. 3 multiple choice exams--some questions were a little tricky. No extra credit. I got an A, but I recommend this course during a full term, especially if you're juggling other classes and priorities.
8 week online course was not enough time for this class, plenty of work due weekly just do all you are asked and you will make an easy A, test require reading the chapters though, but overall highly recommeded instructor.
Dr. Olivares is very good. He made History really interesting and fun. I really enjoyed his class and signed up immediately for 1302. You really need to come to every single class and try not to be late. Make sure you budget enough time for your reading as it is very important or you will not pass your tests. Over all a very enjoyable class.
he's good at what he's teaching but he's extremely strict and doesn't believe in second chance. no extra credit, no makeup test, no lowest test grade dropped, no late work accepted, show up late: don't take test, miss class: don't ask for notes. so let's say if like your mother dies in the day of the final exam, prepare to fail.
He is unorganized when it comes to giving back scantrons. He forgets to put assignments on the learning web.He gives 3 assignments aside from the test and they are all books with questions that follow. dont take him. he doesnt accept late work and lectures too much
Dr.O is a pretty cool guy. I don't know about previous years, but I had plenty of chances for extra credit. No books used whatsoever. All you have to do is show up to his lectures everyday... which are long, but fun. Tests are easy. Assignments are easy. Prof is awesome.
MY ONLINE CLASS I HAVE ENJOY THE MOST. BEST INTRUCTOR
best teacher ever. its an easy class . do not be lazy, its not a high school. he always respond to my emails.
he is an great professor. his test are mostly based of his lectures. he tries his best to help you pass. the books he require you to read can help you pass the test. it is possible to receive an A in his class. GOOD LUCK!
I took this online in the summer and it was one of the easiest online classes i have ever taken. just keep up with due dates of the online quizzes each week and you are good to go! i got a B but that is because i missed two quizzes. otherwise i made A's on all of them.
I am giving an honest review to help people. He only gave lectures, 2 papers, 2-3 tests and a final (not comprehensive). About 4-7 questions are asked twice, he gives 2-6 extra points in tests, every test asks a question about his name. Book is not required, just pay attention. If you like taking notes and/or want an easy ride, take this professor.
Great professer great class loved it i hope to take him for hist 1302
Not helpful at all for online students. Assignments not all on home page some posted only in syllabus so easy to miss if you don't constantly look at both. Very short with responses and not helpful if you have any questions. This is only my second semester in college, i expected an online professor to be helpful or responsive as they on campus.
HE IS A VERY HARD TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HIM WARNING!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE CLASS. NOT HELPFUL AT
I took this course online, & it was EASY! 10 documents 1-2 pgs, 10 tests online, and two questionares. As long as you keep up with the deadlines it's an easy A.
I took this class online, and it was EASY!! 10 documents 1-2pgs, 10 quizzes online, and two questionares. He staggers assignments and quizzes every other day. Keep up with the deadlines, and you'll get an easy A.
Easy, just follow the syllabus and deadlines and you re good.Quizzes are not timed.Easy A
he is a very mean teacher. his class is very helpness. I learn nothing in his class. he is not to help me ar all. I was tried to tlak to him many times, he said things that no meaningful and nothing. Do not take his class. even he would not give you a good grade.
Great class and an even greater professor! Class fully online. Homework, paper, test & exam all online. Responds quickly to email. Even responded to an email about answers on a test that was wrong, the professor corrected it, & emailed me with an new grade. Easy class & an easy A as long as you due the work & turn it in on time!
Great class and an even greater professor! Class fully online. Homework, paper, tests & exam. Everything is all online. Responds quickly to email. Does not put all the work up at once like in his Hist 1301 class. Harder class than 1301 for that reason, but still an easy A as long as you due the work & turn it in on time!
I took the 8 week course, it was an easy A. Syllabus is black and white, no grey area. Just do the work. Not to good on answering emails though, but if there is a problem with one of the test he will address it immediately. I would have taken him for 1302, but he did not teach the class.
To be very honest this Professor has issues I took him Fall 2013 online his syllabus was dated for the Spring semester U have to search hard to find material and he didn't have due dates on syllabus He is very unorganized He does not communicate well Very bad attitude Emails at last minute about your grade in class I made a C *Do not take him*
Great teacher, super easy. I took this course online, mini semester. You have to take a quiz every week, but they are not time. Assignments are lengthy but he gives enough time to do them
bad teacher he is horrible don't take him .
I'm not bitter, but prof.olivares is horrible. I checked his info on Rate My Professor before I took his class, & saw a few students who gave him a bad rating but thought I’d give him the benefit of the doubt, I shouldn't have! His class requires 2-3 quizzes a week and 3, 4-5 pg. essays. On 1 essay I got a 55 becuz he said I didnt use correct text?
If you are not good at writing & do not know how to use google with quizlet to find his quiz answers, do not take it, torture for you. if all yes, congratulations!easy A like piece of pizza.
This professor is unhelpful and has zero flexibility. His assignments are very long. He does not give an accurate picture of the course in the syllabus and actually wouldn't even give us a copy of the syllabus. Every time I exchanged e-mails with him I became angry with how unhelpful he was.
I loved this professor. I received an "A" but you have to really work for it. You must do a lot of reading but if you complete all your work and submit on time you will do great. He does not accept any late assignments, so make sure your on top of your work. The class is not difficult but you will need to make time for your readings.
to many work not fear at all
I took Olivares for the 8-week spring course. You DO have to read a lot. One quiz once a week. Online articles are provided before your quiz, so there isn't room for error. He replies quick. His syllabus is STRAIGHT to the point. The two reading assignments he gives are lenghty BUT boy do you learn from it. No complaints.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Arragant and very contradicting on where to turn in assignments. You think if you were gonna be that arrogant you would atleast make sure you were giving accurate and fair information. Do not take his class... Just horrible.. No other words could even describe him plus he writes with attitude
Arrogant, arrogant, arrogant. Some people shouldn't teach. He is NO help! He doesn't care about his student's concerns. Listen close, STAY AWAY! He will not tell you how your assignments were scored. If you like not knowing why pts are taken off, then take him. 1st time rating a professor because it really was that bad. You've been warned!
Syllabus outlines it all. If you do the readings and the assignments he gives out each month by his instruction exactly, there is absolutely no reason you should not receive an A. Despite not responding to e-mails, he is a good professor that states what he wants and how he wants it. Just follow his instructions for an A.
He is the only online teacher that expects assignments done at 11:30 instead of 11:55. So do not miss that deadline by a minute or you will get a 0! He is not understanding and does not give extra credit or 2nd chances. Lots of reading and writing assignments! I wouldn't recommend him. Only F I've ever made!!!!!! -Science major.
If you do everyhing he says and follow directions you will pass with an A. I
Took Olivares for HIST 1301 & 1302- both online. The work is not hard but there's a whole lot of it. Lots of reading (everything is online, there's no textbook to buy) and writing. Do not miss a single assignment because he does not accept late work at all. I got A's in both classes, and although the content is not difficult, you do work for it.
I took the class online and he literally replied " do not email me anything relative to the course" while I was still in the course. The only good thing about his class is that books are online free. You can pass by simply following the instructions.
Adjunct at University of Houston Downtown this semester. The tests are based on the lecture - you cannot miss a class. The PowerPoint decks were rarely posted. Knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Not a lot of class participation. Reading comprised of book and extra reading materials that were provided. Homework at least once a week.
I took this class during the summer term and honestly it was the best decision I made. Warning !Be prepared to read a lot I'm talking about multiple articles . He is very clear in the syllabus of what he expects of the class. Follow his instructions word for word and you will be fine. There are no test just essays and quizzes .
I took his mini semester class this semester and honestly he was a great professor! the quizzes were easy. We did have essays that were long but his grading wasn't hard. I work full time and had 3 other classes but still got an A! There was no problems with communication.
Took his online second start class and finished with a B. He does assign long essays but all the quizzes were super easy!
This man is very rude and has no compassion. Have this class my all and didn't cheat and received a B. He seems like he's a arrogant man with no sort of remorse for working students.
So easy. There is no text, just required reading online- which I didn't do at all. He takes his quiz questions straight from the internet. Quizlet gave me all the answers. There are a number of written assignments that are mostly opinion based. Time consuming but simple. 1301 was so easy that I took 1302 with Olivares as well and made A's in both.
Took 1302 with him. Quizzes are easy, but he assigned long essays. too much homework. Overall not too difficult but he does not reply to your e-mails at all. He provides all the books, so really dont need to buy books.
EASY A. This class is seriously easy. You have to do the work in order to pass but the work is seriously easy. Loved his class because he is very specific with what he asks so you know exactly what to do. Weekly work but not hard at all. Would recommend.
pros: books are provided cons: way too much reading and very hard too keep up and quizzes aren't so easy :/
No need to buy books, he provides everything needed. Way too many assignments and quizzes. Looooong papers. I took the online class so he has all the assignment available which made it easy to work on. But, get ready to read way too many books. He is a good communicator though.
worst professor ever, stay away from him.
Get awayyyy from this guy!!!!!!
Please stay away from him. He does reply to emails. Class is filled with pointless work. Take someone else!
Stay away!!!! Very difficult person to deal with.
On the bright side you do not need to buy books for this class, but honesty this teacher does not care about teaching you history not does he grade fairly. My advice, please get a different professor unless you want to fail or dedicate all your time to this class.
Stay away!!!!!,gives to much work for Freshman level course !
The class was pretty simple, read, complete the map assignment, then do the 20 question quiz every week. BUT i was not satisfied with my overall class grade. He was one of those professors who only cared about getting paid and submitting your grade although it may be a 0. He wasn't flexible with our school work, you failed oh well he didn't care...
Terrible "teacher", although he's anything but. Doesn't care about students. STAY AWAY!! Even if an assignment is 30 mins late he will not accommodate. He just tries to prove what power he has. You're better off learning from a book, because he does not care to spend time on students. Take any other teacher. Will definitely not take again.
STAY AWAY!!!!!! He does not care about students. Grades very tough, and not accommodating. Take anyone else.
Dr. Olivares is a great professor he gets into his lectures good. Be ready to write! chapter assignments each week, not hard just lots of writing, 4 tests in which he gives extra points for each. 2 essay assignments and that is it i got an A in class and at the beginning i had started with a 37 so just do your work and you will pass!
Dr. Olivares was a amazing professor! You learn a lot from his lectures and he is very organized. There are 4 lecture exams, 2 papers, and textbook assignments weekly. He really does care for his students and wants you to learn in his class. I would definitely take him again!
I really had a great time in his class even though he gave a lot of homework. It actually helped me get through the test, and the test weren't hard at all you just have to focus on the lectures. I loved this class honestly and he gave us a lot of time to do the work, just don't procrastinate on it.
Professor Olivares was a great teacher. He was really straightforward when it came to assignments, lectures, and his expectations. There were 4 tests including the final, 2 writing assignments, and weekly homework assignments. Everything from his tests came from his lectures and he took a lot of free grades from attendance.
Coming from a student who always enjoys easy straightforward classes, Dr. Olivares class was outstanding. The way he taught was simple yet amusing. He had jokes for class and made his lectures amusing. He always let students know where they had to be and will always try to give you a hand when you most need it (e.g. those HW assignments he gives)
No clear instructions for online class assignments and expects you to be on time for submission. He has difficulty posting the assignment instructions and his class is very confusing most likely he is computer illiterate and belongs to chalk and blackboard generation. Online class not recommended, in class lecture take at your own risk.
HORRIBLE ONLINE CLASS!!!!! A poorly written syllabus. Way too much work in a short amount of time. I wish I had checked this site first because everyone that gave examples of how bad his class is, are absolutely right!
Worst professor ever
Organized. Lots of reading & Ch. assigns., but instruction is very clear. Strongly appreciates your individual input Very attentive, able to reach easily. Regularly provides feedback. Each exam (this sem) consisted of 2 essays & 5 terms. 16-wk course; syllabus: 4 exams, 1 .ppt, 1 research, 15 Ch. *multi-assigns. * 3 - 6 assigns. per Ch
I wish I had looked at his score before enrolling. He responds to students who ask questions rudely. He changes the online materials almost daily, and it is very hard to understand what you should be doing. HIs expectations are higher than they should be for the clarity he provides. Would not recommend!
DONT TAKE HIM PLEASE RUN .
Worse professor EVER PLEASE DONT SPENT TIME READING OTHER REVIEW JUST DONT TAKE HIM. Very TOUGH GRADER
Super chill. He doesn't force anyone to study for tests or submit stuff on time, if you fail you fail, but there is nothing wrong with it. His quizzes aren't hard, so you actually have time to study and enjoy history instead of just reading over and over again for a good grade without learning anything. Gives liberal grades on powerpoint.
Do not take this teacher he is very strict on grading and will not accept any mistakes I would rather take a history class in person than take an online class with this guy!!
Great teacher! If you study and keep up with your assignments, you will be successful. You do need your textbooks. All of the questions in the exam are from the Textbook.
He does curve grades, only after he gives you a 20 on the paper. The class was difficult and Ill never take him again!
very strict about due dates. no late work. method needs a lot of work.
Took as a 8-week class. Ten chapter quizzes, five discussions and you have to reply to two others for a total of ten replies. One 10-20 slide powerpoint. A lot of writing because of the discussions, it felt like it was a writing class. The powerpoint was easy. I thought I was going to get a low grade on my power point, but I got a 100!
Attainable syllabus format. Plenty of time to take quizzes and turn in assignments. Most definitely taking him for History 1302.
Professor Olivares was an awesome teacher. His tests and quizzes were solely based on lectures. However, the lectures were always very informative and fun. He does get sidetracked at times, but take it as a break from writing noted. With our class, our grade was an average of 4 tests and 4 quizzes with the lowest test grade dropped.
This was an easy A class of History 1302, online 5 weeks class. There is only quizzes from chapter 1 to 10 and Discussion 1 to 5. Then you are done . I suggest those people who thinks history is not your type to take his class and specially for international students cause I know the value of grade" A " matters more when you pay extra fees.
I just started this course yesterday and the class is very difficult. 10 questions in 15 minutes, sometimes up to two chapters of the book, and the answers often have to be answered without knowing what the answer is. A question can be writing 5 sentences about our opinion of something.... yep! We have not enough time. Skip from this class...
the only thing keeping me inn this guys class is the fact i hate to quit, but he is a horrible professor. He does not allow enough time for quizzes, he is rude when asking him questions. He isn't really involved with the students and not helpful at all.
No textbook required. Tests solely over lectures, so show up to class, take good notes, study a bit and you'll get an A. I would combined the knowledge I learned from his lectures with information from youtube videos on concepts that he doesn't go into enough detail about. Tests which are very unusually simple, almost elementary like.
very clear with expectations and grades. 4 exams total (pretty easy too), no textbook, everything is based on your notes during the lectures. Just take good notes and you should pass easily. Very enjoyable professor! Def recommend.
Worse professor ever. Gives confusing assignments. Please dont mind what other people are writing. Dont take him period. After the assignment, he would respond I know the essay is too hard but we need face hard things in life in order to make it. That does not make sense after he graded you 40% out of 100%
I took his class 8- weeks online. It is pretty straight forward. You NEED the book! There was one power point, quizzes, and discussions. Easy A if you are willing to do your part, put in the time and effort to do the work. I definitely would recommend this class/professor.
His quizzes are not easy and the questions are based off of random little things in the book that literally are not relevant. You can not find the answers to the quizzes online and he gives you 10 minutes to do 10 questions. I expected this class to be easy but I'm sorry I can't remember who assembled the army of the south in 1843.
The professor is very straightforward with all the assignments. You must participate in all the discussion topics and pay attention to detail of what is required on certain assignment like the PowerPoint presentation. Im very surprised I can consider this class easy for it to be a 8 week session but I will take this professor class again.
I had him for the first semester and I feel like I was blessed.
he cool af, just take detailed notes during class and you should be good. no textbook, everything based off power points/lectures.
I took him for HIST1302 online class, he is fine. This class is all about reading, you have to read the book in detail. There is no extra credit for this class.
Show up to class and take notes. That is all there is to it. You do not have to read out of a textbook. No essays. No homework. Just go to class and TAKE NOTES! Easy A!
BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER! Took him for History I online and his class is so easy! Do the assignments, follow the syllabus, message him with any questions and he WILL respond! I highly recommend Professor Olivares! Textbook was needed but Amazon has great prices! I've learned so much!
He is an amazing professor! His class is lecture and you need to show up because attendance is a grade. There are 5 exams and he drops the lowest. But is exams are his lectures. If you take good-okay notes you will pass. I just record his lectures and listen to them before the test and my lowest grade is an 88 and he is dropping it. Funny stories!
An easy professor to take, if you show up and take lots of notes in his lectures, you'll definitely pass. Be sure to show up to class, class attendance is graded per day and make sure to be on time, or you'll receive partial credit for showing up late. No books, exams are based on lectures and make sure you follow instruction on exams.
Not a fan of history, but this was an easy online class. The syllabus is clear & includes all assignment due dates. I took the 8 week course, there were 10 quizzes on the book, 5 class discussion questions and 1 powerpoint. No late work accepted. As long as you do the work on time, you're good!
I took both his History 1 and 2 classes online and he is super easy! Only thing is you do have to read. His quizzes are question from the chapters so if you read you will do great passed both times with B. Every week he sends out a announcement of any changes and reminds you to stay on top of things. If you want and easy class take his!
I just took this class online for the summer and I must say it was easier than what I expected. Surprisingly I became very interested in the subject. His quizzes were pretty easy but I did read all the chapters. Discussions took a little more effort bc you actually had to put thought into it. Over all pretty easy class. Will take again
I would not recommend this professsor at all (this is my first time to rate a professor because I have had all great professors at HCC). He is VERY rude. There are several great HCC History professors, so I would not waste your time dealing with this instructor. If you scroll down you will see more similar comments.
his class is simple yet hard, we only had discussions and quizzes. quizzes weigh more than discussions, i missed a quiz and it effected my grade badly. make sure you follow all the rules, he is kind of picky.
I definitely recommend taking his class. I don't like in history in general, but I actually like paying attention in his class. Besides the fact that it's an easy A class, his lectures are great and interesting. It's a notes & exams class, so neither you or Dr. Olivares are doing any more work than wanted. And he's a great guy. Take him.
Take him. He is such an easy A. The only assignments in his class are just his four exams. The last exam is not even a final, it's just over the last few topics he lectures on. He gives points for attendance. His lectures are amazing. He relates topics to relative experiences and events nowadays. Just take notes, study them, and you will pass.
He is not a bad professor, but you have to read the textbook to pass quizzes and In discussions you have to put effort and thought
Jaime is a great teacher. He made history interesting and fun for me. If you want to get an A out of this class attend the CLASSES (he does attendance grades), do extra credit, pay attention in class, and participate. Dr.O gives 4 exams including then lets you do a make-up for lowest exam score! All exams are based on lectures, so pay attention!!!!
Overall he is a nice guy. You have to pay attention in class and study the ppt he gave to us. You have to attend to EVERY class to get extra credits. There are 4 tests normally he would drop one lower grade. The tests are easy if you study the ppt in class.
These reviews dont make up or show how good of a professor he is !! He is literally easy just write good notes he literally tells you what to write down and what is and isnt on the test
I took this Professor Olivares for Hist1301 and HIST1302 and he is an amazing professor. You have to read every chapter and do all the discussions. No Midterms or Final exams but you do have a power point. If you do all the assignments you can pass his class with an A. He does not accept any late work.
Great professor, very clear and organized. I took United States History I online class in a regular semester and I must say I learned a lot. A few quizzes/discussions - which I considered very simple. You MUST do the all the readings & youll get an easy A. Final was a Power Point Presentation. No exams whatsoever I recommend!
This class should be an easy A, the professor is extremely rude. He care rather you actually learned the material or not honestly. There are MANY technical errors in his outdated syllabus that needs to be updated. I contacted the professor on several occasions regarding these errors, one response went unreplied to, and the other response was rude!
He is a great professor! He does not accept late work nor has extra credit. No assignments just quizzes, discussions and 1 PowerPoint. Quizzes are based off the textbook, you can skim it and pass. Discussions and PowerPoint are mostly graded on if you completely did it and turned in on time. Easy grade if you do the work.
Took an 8-week course we had to write 500-word discussions pretty much every 2 days, few were 700 words which honestly is asking for way too much. No tests or exams, but there are chapter quizzes it's easy if you actually read the chapters. There are two big assignments we have to answer questions on 5 diff articles 500 words each and a PowerPoint
I didn't think he was going to be that bad, but I was wrong. He does not answer your questions when you ask, he is such a tough grader and would not be specific at all with what he wanted, then he would give you a bad grade for not having what he wanted. I would not recommend him to anyone honestly.
The worst teacher ever. This is my first time rating a teacher here. This is a warning, just do not take this person as your teacher. Gives an automatic zero if he can not open your assignment, not re-submission and will never listen to your explanation at all. The syllabus is very easy but he made everything hard just by being him.
This professor is very awesome, I took his online class and everything is perfect. I feel like what he is doing for the class is great. People will complain because they are not on top of their work and they are lazy. THIS IS COLLEGE.
He is a nice teacher, I took him for online class and I was asleep 80% of the time in all his classes since it started at 8am. Somehow i passed with an A. However, he doesnt accept late work.
he is the worst teacher i have ever seen. He just doesn't care about your future. Never seen harder tests than his. If you are gonna take classes from him be ready to fail or drop the class immediately. THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING. PLEASE, IF YOU ARE READING THIS DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
Awful, just don't take it...
Wrote 997/1000 word essay and got 0 because I didn't write 1000. He didn't even read my essay, just insta 0 if you don't want to waste time, don't take this professor. He became a professor to suffer students.
I took this class because I need those credits. It's only 10 quizzes. 1 PowerPoint. 10 discussion and 1 writing assignment. I did everything on time and turn in before the due date and he gave me a zero, I send him an email to ask why and he never responded to me. Same with the textbook I could not find it online and I email him and nothing.
Honest to god I should not have gotten an A in this class. He can be hard to get a hold of but he also sets certain class times to talk to the students and let them know what they need to do to pass. He cares about the grades of his students as well. I failed the first test with a 46 and still managed to pull through with a A on almost every test.
I messaged Olivares about the online textbook issue and he said he would solve it, but it was ignored. I contacted McGraw Hill customer support to receive an online copy. His quizzes have many "gotcha" questions and are purposefully worded to be confusing. Discussions must be 500-700 required word length along with reading 1 chapter each week.
"Professor Olivares" is difficult to comprehend when assigning work. Instructions may not always be what he wants from his students. When he writes " email me with any questions"? THINK AGAIN. He only responds to students if he feels like it. He is very unclear, does not actively engage with his students. Seek a different Instructor.
If you have other options for an instructor - look for another. This instructor is not clear in his actual wants for assignments. He is unclear, uncaring, unorganized, self-centered, does not make students feel welcome, breaks his own rules, can't find where you answer assignments. He doesn't communicate effectively at all.
He is a hard grader. I have him as an online class and reading the instructions for the assignments is difficult because they are very unclear. The instructions are vague and hard to understand what he is exactly looking for, for the assignment. He doesn't accept late assignments so no late grade.
Professor Olivares was awesome. His lectures are very detailed, if you pay attention (& write down) the details you'll pass the tests. Tests are exactly like the review, just study!! He cares about his students and makes funny jokes. Take this professor if you want to have an easy workload! Definitely would take him again :)
He accepts zero late submissions and is bad at elaborating what he expects for an assignment. His instructions can be a bit vague and he doesn't tell you what he wants until after the fact. He can be quite self-centered when you try to reach out for help as well.
He is a great professor. I took his class for two semesters and both were amazing. If you take notes from his lecture and study the review, it is a easy A for this class. Review is really important. He tell us exactly what to study. He make sure to make his students realize, what they are missing in the assignments too.
Very vague in what he wants for assignments. Feedback is usually one-word answers like "interesting" and "good." Weekly discussions are either 200-500 words, plus responding to classmates. Quizzes are 10 questions from the textbook. No tests. He offered one opportunity for extra credit. The material was not complicated, but would not take again.
I took the regular term. There are 10 discussion posts, 11 quizzes (syllabus quiz included), 5 map assignments, final project is a 20+ slide show. In discussion posts you have a word count minimum ranging from 100 to 500 words and you have to respond to 2 other people with 5 sentences each. The quizzes are all based on the book for this course.
Loved him, I would take him again
Would not take again.
For this class, only 4 exams in total. Lectures are amazing as long as you take the right notes. You should be fine as long as you study and complete all assignments.
you should be fine as ling as you take notes and pay attention to his lectures, he is very clear at explaining, and for me it was very easy to do fine in tests just by paying attention, he wants you to succeed. would take again, his style of teaching makes information easy to absorb, and lectures arent boring.
Phenomenal lectures. Very knowledgeable man. He wants to help everyone. Very easy to pay attention in his class
Mr. Olivares was a very great professor he is strict in the beginning but in the end, he does offer help. He does talk a lot especially if you take him in the morning, but the lectures are somewhat interesting he also mentions personal experiences to connect. I would recommend studying for his exams
Excellent professor, easy to pay attention and take notes with. He helped me out whenever we needed them and was a light grader.
He's a really light grader and straight to the point in his lectures. All you have to do is memorize the things on the study review sheet and take notes and u will be good.
Dr Olivares makes history really enjoyable. Instead of purely making us learn from just multiple choices and quizzes. He gives out weekly discussions which encourages us to throw out our opinion about certain events in history. The power point project individual and really easy to do , only major grades in it, no exams. I 100% recommend taking him.
I loved this class! I took this class over the summer (a 5 week course). There were discussion posts, quizzes, and one major project. If you like history you will enjoy the assignments that he assigns. The classes had a lot of work, however if you read the book and planned ahead the class was manageable and entertaining.
He will not understand for any problems you have. And he will not even accept when he made a mistake. He approved on a wrong topic then decide to took back the point from me because he said I did not follow the syllabus. But the topic was turned in way before due date, if he did not approved it I would have change it on time. He is not nice.
Professor Olivares has an easy class. I took the winter mini-semester. Get ready to research and write a lot as his discussion posts have a minimum of at least 500 words. There were 10 discussion posts, 10 quizzes, and one PowerPoint presentation to be done. He grades fast as well and gives feedback on the discussion posts. I recommend his class.
I took professor Olivares for the winter term and he was a good professor. Youre graded on 10 quizzes some discussion posts of a minimum of 500 words and a powerpoint. Just follow his rubrics and you should be fine.
Awful grader, does not make clear expectations , grades off opinion and is unwilling to give feedback. Often just tells you to look at the syllabus rather than taking the time to explain his reasoning.
One discussion post each week and lots of quizzes. The quizzes are short and you get two tries, and he gives decent feedback on discussion posts. You will get a good grade as long as you answer the questions fully and respond to a few people. There is a PowerPoint project which is a bit lengthy, but he gives you a lot of creative freedom and time.
Exams were open book he doesn't fuss very light work load I would highly recommend taking him for an easy grade
I had to come back here and write this after a year. I loved his class. Very fascinating stuff. Definitely write everything down bc his exams are straight from his lecture. Exams do require quite a bit of studying for an A but if you pay attention in class is ez
Really easy professor, I had him for summer 2024, despite the hurricane he still gave us a reasonable time for the due date of assignments. I think he's a light grader, you put the effort for the class, you'll get the grade you deserve. 10 quizzes, 10 discussions, and one pp. It is all really easy. He gives nice compliments as well. take him!!
Very good professor. Cares about teaching you. No tests but 5 essays through the semester including one long analysis essay. He gives you plenty of time to complete these essays. Grades nicely. Just show that you know what you are talking about. Would definitely take again.
He teaches interesting things about U.S History you might never know if you don't take the class. Lectures can get heavy but if you come with the intention of focusing you'll do it very easily. Take notes because his PowerPoints are vague and he expands on the important details verbally, which proves how knowledgable he is. My favorite professor :D
I really like Professor Olivares class and how he teaches. I had him for the summer and it was three tests to write in the blue book. His history teaching is really impressive and well challenging.
Prof. Olivares is good for people who can hunker down on their own without the need for guidance. A total of 10 quizzes that you would complete by the end of the semester. Each quiz is 10 questions long with a 10 minute timer. The hardest part was the project because his instructions were SLOPPY! (Just hard to understand and he doesn't clarify.)
His lectures were actually interesting for someone who doesn't like history, made it easy to stay engaged. He doesn't use reviews or anything, tests were straight from his lectures so make sure you take good notes.
Dont even think about it
Not recommended
This professor gives zero assistance for online classes, nor does he instruct or do any kind of teaching. He has a strict grading criteria but gives zero feedback, there is no effort from this professor. The workload is fairly light but can be difficult when you're learning nothing. Would not recommend!
I absolutely loved having Professor Olivares for my history class. He is organized, fair, and genuinely supportive of his students. He always graded assignments on time and provided helpful feedback. The quizzes directly reflected the material he covered, so if you paid attention and studied, you did well. Highly recommend!
Take his class, You can tell he cares about what he teaches. He doesn't do phone or sleeping in class, taking notes during the lecture or just listening will help u during the exam u take 4 exams no final easy A and an AMAZING PROFESSOR
He is an amzing teacher, totally understanding and if you make a mistake he talks to you about it. His quizzes arnt that hard and he changes the tests based on what the students want. His main goal is to pass and teach the students and so that is his main priority.
NOT RECOMMENDABLE
This has to be the worst history teacher ever. He will deadass give you a zero for missing one thing on an assignment. Be prepared to take the U.S. map quiz every few months. He will talk about his wife nonstop
He is by far the best history professor I've had in my life, his lectures can be challenging but you can tell that he has real knowledge about this topics and he's passionate about them, he is very nice and caring too.
Idk why the bad reviews. 15 quizzes, really easy, due throughout the semester. One discussion due every week, expect to do 500 words weekly, easy topics, plus respond to two classmates,100 words each. One powerpoint (15-20 slides) due a the end of the semester, you have all the time in the semester to complete it. No lockdown browser. EASY!!!
Want an online class with weekly reminders? This is your professor. He gives plenty of time to do a final project! The quizzes and discussions posts might be a challenge- though it is relatively simple once you start. You are given a website with chapters- so be prepared to write notes or watch hour long videos (that reviews the chapters.)
Took an online anytime class. Assignments were very structured and clear. Professor Olivares sent emails every new week introducing the assignments too in case you missed them. Good grader.
