Good teacher. She'll explain things as many times as needed to get everyone to understand. Her tests are hard, so study up. But if you attend class without fail, and study you'll do fine.
I was very impressed with her mastery of the material. Homework is easy, tests are kind of hard. Do everything, you'll do fine.
As long as you attend classes, the exams are pretty easy. If the material is new to you, expect to study hard. Nice teacher.
Jamie is a very good teacher, she explains things very well and stops very often for questions. She wants her students to understand the "whole picture" more than the specifics(her exams are a little of both)--study by reading chapter, notes, and do the practice tests in compan. book. She is always avail in her office too (she is never too busy).
Managed to make a course full of a lot of info less intimidating. VERY helpful, willing to bend over backwards to help out students. Seems she's willing to spoon-feed good grades to people. She offers lots of extra credit and grades on a curve.
She was an awesome teacher! She would take the time to help you if you needed it and she also graded on a curve. She is a lot of fun in lecture and she has a great personality.
Jaimie rocks. She's a great leader, with the ability to blend in with the crowd. I took her based on other ratings and was not disappointed. She assigns a good amount of work, but it's all worth it to get an A.
Jaime is my favorite professor I've ever had and I have had a lot! For some reason she can explain Biology so that it is understandable. She has a wonderful personality, I look forward to going to her lectures all week!! She is so funny, I smile the whole class. Easy class just come to class and do the work:)
Sweet chick. Does notes for you and has a pretty cool lecture. Didn't have her for lab, but all her exams are off the notes she wrote for you.
Jamie is seriously my most favorite professor I've ever taken. She really knows how to teach a Bio class and makes it fun with her fantastic personality. She has got to be one of the greatest biologists I've ever met. I really wish I could take her through out my whole Bio major classes. Those who get in her class should feel lucky and privileged.
Jamie rocks my socks. Im not real interested in Bio, but Jamie had me looking forward to most classes. Her lecture style is fun, and she presents difficult material in many ways so that students can learn in all parts of their brains. Lots of jokes, but on topic when needed. Wish I could take more of her classes.
Tests are pretty straight forward, you don't have to take notes Powerpoint slides available for printout online. Study guides and the book website come in very handy. If you don't study and don't show up to class, you will have a very hard time passing this class. Not an easy class, but if you show up and try you'll get a decent grade.
Jaimie is very cool. She teaches off of slides she takes right from the book, and tests from the slides she presents and posts on the internet. A little trouble with lecture and test scheduling, but overall a very good, charming teacher.
Jamie is very nice but the lectures can get a little boring. In class, besides the cool trivia facts that she shares with students, you don't learn a whole lot more than you would reading the slides at home. Her tests are easy if you study the slides, but you cannot go by with trying to guess. She is clear on what her expectations are.
Love this teacher. She uses power point that you can print out- not a lot of note-taking because of that. She has a great personality and is very smart. I highly recommend.
She's hilarious and makes even hard stuff like biology fun.
She's funny and has a great personality, but I wasn't crazy about the lectures. If it wasn't for our lab teacher I don't think I would have understood anything. She mostly just read her powerpoints, which I didn't find engaging. But she's nice and approachable if you need extra help.
This was Jaimies'first term teaching Biology 211 at PCC. She read directly off her power point slides, tests were fairly hard. Made several rude comments to questions asked by students in my class. She was not a professional teacher, and definently showed her emotions. If you have to take a 200 level BIO class I would reccomend Micha Jordan.
Yikes!
Total disappointment. Too much reliance on power points. Tests emphasized your understanding of the processes rather than rogue memorization. All and all, snore....zzz.... I would recommend another teacher.
Her teaching style is very dry and sometimes monotonous. If you can get her talking about her personal life, she loosens up a bit, and cracks some jokes. Overall, I felt she graded fairly and tests were not too hard and not too easy. Not very helpful in lab, her usual response was "go look in your lab manual". I'd take her again though.
She's very nice and personable, especially in lab. She expects a lot from students, its a majors level class. She does get off topic very easily and that tends to waste time but she takes a lot of disrespect from students which she doesn't derserve. I thought she was a great teacher, even though tests were pretty difficult. I;d recommend her.
She truly is a wonderful professor! She is very intelligent, but also funny and entertaining in lecture. Her lab is tough but in a good way, because you learn a lot. She is also very kind and helpful!
I really liked Jaimie's lecture and lab. She is pretty engaging and easy going so it is easy to ask questions. She provides her power point presentations in BB and I found printing these up and taking them to lecture really helpful. Her exams were fair, multiple choice with a lot of application of subject knowledge.
Excellent instructor.
Instructor Powell was incredibly unorganized, unavailable and unhelpful. Lab work was almost completely unsurpervised and in no way prepared you for her tests hard but fair). She made multiple rude remarks to students when they asked legimitate questions but the majority of her lecture is filled with her pet students inappropriate comments
Dr. Powell was a very clear and organized instructor. She made all of her presentation slides as well as extra material including test guides available online. She was very helpful with questions and made herself available during the class break as well as having office hours 4 days a week.
Jaimie is the best biology teacher I've ever had. She is very helpful in class and is always available for office hours questions. She has a great sense of humor! Her tests are fair and the class averages are high.
Jaimie made this class as painless as possible! She is very informative and caters to all types of learning. Her tests are hard but fair. She was always willing to meet with me during office hours and help me with any questions. She is the best! I highly recommend her!
Awesome instructor!!! Had her for the whole series 211-213 and learned a ton. Had to work to get an A but enjoyed every minute of it. Take her class if you get the chance.
Jaimie is a great teacher. She introduces material in a way that you can get the big picture, then goes into the details, which I found helpful. Tests are not easy, but are fair, and honestly it's biology, so of course they are hard. I suggest printing out her lecture notes, as the lecture is too dense and fast to take your own notes.
jaimie is a funny teacher. she is very nice, and when she lectures i was totally up to par with her. but once it came down to the tests, they had nothing to do with the study guides she provides, or her power point notes. it was a frustrating class over all because the last two tests we had 2/3rds of the class got a c- or lower. dont recommend her
Works hard and enjoys her students. Very rewarding if you put in the effort which needs to be very high. She is personable and cares about the subject but can let class discussion get out of hand which makes it more difficult to stay focused and learn. The tests are unnecessarily tricky and cause students to lose points on semantics. Grade - A
Her tests questions were misleading due to poor grammar and punctuation. There were several instances in which her test questions had multiply correct answers which she admitted, yet she refused to accept them as correct. I would advise seeking another professor.
Powell is good when it comes to lecture, her tests are unnecessarily hard and focus too much on small details that generally weren't discussed in depth in class. As for lab, she's not extremely helpful, she's available, but just that.
took jaimie as a biology professor, she is really int what she is talking about in lecture, but the things she teaches in lecture have almost nothing to do with the tests. i would say about half of the test she talks about in class. the other half she didnt even go over. i definitely dont recommend this teacher
Lectures are boring, delivered in a monotone, straight from slides. Told us we didnt need to read text - all material needed for tests was in her notes - not true. Tests are very hard, often dont include stuff in notes. Basically left alone in lab then chastised us like kids, complaining we didnt do all we should have. I dont recommend her.
Jaimie is a great teacher. She tells you exactly what you need to do well in the class, and is pretty helpful along the way. She's smart, funny, kind, and a total bio nerd, which is what you need in a biology teacher. Be a responsible, good student and you will do great in her class. Totally recommend her!
Has her favorites. Doesn't like being questioned. Not afraid to yell at you in class. Exams: multiple correct answers; simple questions are difficult due to incorrect word usage; ?'s are worded very counter-intuitively.
Dr. Powell makes you work for your grade. She is not "easy". Biology is HARD. Her exams are all multiple choice questions where you either get it or you don't. Lab was on our own time, but utilize that time. It's valuable. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take this class. If you want to LEARN biology I highly recommend Jaimie.
Jamie is really nice and humorous! She tries to wake us up in the morning with jokes and is generally interested in what people are up to. As far as the class, she is straight forward with what she is looking for in the test. No tricky questions! Too bad she teaches BIO major classes only. I recommend her for non majors if she is teaching bio!
Loved Jaimie! Sure, there were a few frustrating questions on most tests, but there's lots of sources for points toward your grade so a few lower scores on tests won't kill you. Go to class, read the notes and READ THE BOOK. If you understand it, you'll be fine. If you don't, go to office hours. YOUR effort will determine your grade.
Jaimie is sooo not a monotone lecturer--great sense of humor and interested in your input. Not every test ? comes from the notes or lecture, you must also read the book. If you do the work and understand the material (90%) you'll be fine. Highly recommend her!
I took the entire 200 level general biology sequence with Jaimie. She was a great teacher who was able to engage with students better than any teacher I've ever had.She has a strong personality, which might rub some the wrong way,but she will help you succeed if you put in the effort.Study the lecture notes until you have them down, and you'll be OK.
I don't see how this woman receives such high remarks. She is not good at what she does and the her grading is just horrible! I'm happy for the grade I did get out of her. It was not easy at all. In fact I need to take the entire year of biology but I sure in the heck would not take it from her again. Also, she lies often to her student!
Jamie is very helpful and is concerned with her students. She wants you to achieve her class with a grade higher than a C. She offers help and is always willing to teach her students if they don't understand. She also has a good sense of humor. She's very chill and laidback. Her exams are tough- comprehensive exam type.
I took Jaimie's class because of her helpfulness in tutoring for 101. She really simplifies the info and realizes that 102 is not a course for Bio majors. She keeps things simple & encourages the use of office time if you don't understand. She keeps lectures fun and does not put one to sleep. I would definately recommend her.
Jaimie is by far the best science teacher I have ever had! Science is not my favorite, but she made it easier to understand and her class actually became my favorite class of the term. I highly recommend her!
I loved Jaimie! She has a real passion for what she does and that comes across in her teaching. I would say that no science classes are super easy, but she explains things in a way that makes you interested in learning about it, making you to get a better grade. Recommend for people who aren't stoked about the science classes they need to take.
She's awesome! I loved Jamie, I didn't get an A, or become a teachers pet, she is just simply a great teacher. She's engaging, and funny. Her classes are easy going, and her lectures are rather entertaining. I would take her again, she's friendly and funny.
Not helpful at all. Does not like to move one finger to help a student. Just reads the book very fast and send you home. Any YouTube video does a better job in explain Biology than her. Is always extremely late with grades. Students have to beg for their grades. Worse instructor ever! And if she decides she does not like you, good luck getting a A.
Jaimie is an awesome teacher!! I took 211, 212, and 213 with her. The material is hard and there is lots of it. She makes it easy it understand and is always available during office hours for extra help. Willing to pre-read science papers before submitting for additional clarity. AWESOMENESS: 2 thumbs up! By far my favorite Bio teacher.
Very bad instructor. I should have read the reviews before! I would never recommend. She chooses people she likes and if you disagree with her that is a C for you! She is not clear and keeps making horrible jokes not related to the material. Never again!
Jaimie is an engaging instructor with a wealth of knowledge and experience. This class was really tough for me but Jaimie's clear grading criteria and learning objectives definitely helped keep me organized and trucking along.
Jaimie is a wonderful character. I was very impressed by her teaching style and really connected with her. I would say she is one of my favorite teachers I have ever had.
Greats personality, not so much teaching. Her practice tests did not help with the exams what so ever. The questions were almost always two sided. Her lectures were fun but she rather get through 74 slides then to give examples. There is not room for error because she does not offer extra credit. Her lab was great tho! Rcommend for lab not lecture.
This class was incredibly difficult. Duh, its biology. Jaimie lets you make corrections on exams for partial points back. Do ALL the concept checks and objectives to succeed. LAB IS HARD! STUDY FOR LAB!!! There is a lot of material and Jaimie goes through it fast, but shes available in her office. Not an easy A, but I would take her again.
She stepped up on examples for her slides, it was a fun and funny lecture I looked forward to most days, she'd get off-track for two minutes but then right back. Homework was 2 points usually, exams were 175 but 1 of 3 is dropped, do the homework and read the textbook if you want an A. Really try for it or you won't get that A.
Jaimie is the best!!! She is so friendly and amazing at teaching biology. I understood difficult topics within minutes, that I previously struggled with in chemistry. Just study the power points and you'll do great on the tests (you actually have to study them!). There are 3 exams (lowest is dropped), and the final. I wish she taught A&P!
Jaimie is the best teacher I've ever had. She will go the extra mile to make sure you feel good about the subject, the class, your grade, yourself... She always put a smile on my face, which is important in tougher classes like this. GREAT at explaining concepts. If you weren't a science person before, you will be after taking her class.
Jaimie was one of my first instructors at PCC last year. Her personality is... AWESOME. She cares about her students, is open to questions, and is always upbeat. She doesn't offer quizzes, so be sure to stay on your reading and print lecture slides prior to class. Her tests are multiple choice, which can be good or bad, depending on the person.
I'm glad I took bio112 with Jaimie. Although her lectures are kind of boring, she still did a great job with having clear expectations and offered us many assignments and online quizzes to help our understanding of the chapter. Jaimie has a great sense of humor and has hilarious stories. I just wish she had more energy when she gave lectures!
Her teaching method is just standing up in class and reading her power point. She doesn't draw on the board or move around a lot. Your grade is based on 3 tests and that's it. homework is worth 2 points while the tests are 175 points. You have 2 literature assignments.
The Instructor is available to answer any questions pertaining to biology. The grading is fair. The material is clear, study the power points to do well. I would recommend this class to others.
I love her teaching style! And she gets to the point and is also hilarious! I would take one of her classes again.
Show up to class and you'll receive those partcipation points. You won't learn much from her lecture notes. Utilize all your resources on campus such as tutoring. She says she wants her students to succeed but doesn't like going into depth with concepts - especially chemistry concepts. I do not recommend. Too busy being department chair.
Her lecture is so boring, she made it so difficult to understand material. I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless you love reading. Teaches only with powerpoint, literally no homework just online quizzes that don't help much, 2 lit assignments, lowest test score is dropped so thats good. I only had her for lecture I would've lost it if i had lab.
Biology hasn't come easily to me and the hybrid class doesn't suit my learning style. If you're good at studying on your own and self-motivated, then the hybrid class is for you. With that said - Jaimie was SO helpful to me. She's patient and really cares if you pass or not. Take advantage of her open office hours if you can!
Great teacher! Had Bio101 with her and I learned a lot. Good sense of humor and very fair with grading. Doesn't do a lot of review unless you ask for it but slides are very thorough.
Powell enjoys teaching and the students in my class definitely enjoyed the class, but I didnt. She wasnt boring, but at times she would go off on tangents that would take up class time and when that happened, she would race through her power point slides to go over all the material. I felt that it was unfair because these tangents broke my focus.
Excellent instructor! Makes the class enjoyable. Very challenging class so you have to work and study but as far as the instructor goes she cares about her students and is really easy to understand and talk to would def take one of her classes again
Quite nice, she is very vfriendly and approachable. I took her onlien class, and it was a nice combination of online and in class. She might not have always been super knowledgeable about the topic, but she knew enough. She realizes that many of the students are taking this class as a requirment and adjusts here teaching style to match that.
Very nice, friendly, and outgoing. Extremely knowledgeable about biology. Realizes that some students take the class as a lab science requirement and tailors her lessons accordingly. Lots of extra credit available on the 3 midterm exams (lowest one dropped) and the final. She made the lectures fun and memorable. I would recommend her to everyone.
I took human genetics online with her, and Jaimie is great! You can tell she really cares about her students succeeding and is passionate about the topic. Her weekly assignments are pretty time-consuming and in-depth, but if you do them thoroughly you'll know most of what you need to know for her exams and won't need to do a ton of extra studying.
I'm mixed. Lots of weekly stuff with reading 2 chapters, quiz, hw ,discussion but it was clear what was on exams (study guide helpful). Online is frustrating bc you cant get that immediate feeling on if you got it and no lectures just reading. If you can self learn and did well in bio you'll do fine tho.
Jaimie is one of the best professors Ive taken a class with at PCC! Although the class is quite tough, I can tell she truly cares and wants her students to pass. She is also very funny and certainly knows what shes talking about, so youll be in good hands! All around a great teacher for Biology.
Jaimie is not a good teacher. She makes tons of assignments, most of which are just busy work.
Jaimie is wonderful. She was very understanding when I had a rough patch in my personal life that was interfering with school. This class was a lot of work but she made it fun. She assigned various styles of homework and exercises in order to fit different students learning styles. Instructions were clear & class was well organized. 100% recommend!
This class gave me more than one mental breakdown. Nice person but has terrible teaching methods as there was no teaching involved. I'm retaking this class and actually learning now with someone else. Her wording for homework and tests were as though we are medical drs. Almost everyone dropped. Showing up and doing assignments isn't enough to pass.
Jaimie is awesome! In a science class for liberal arts students, she made the material fun and cracked jokes all the way though the term. Very reasonable grading/late work policies. A tough class, but you will actually learn! Sometimes not the clearest of quiz questions, but she will usually work with the class feedback on those too.
Ridiculous amount of work for an introductory level class with an over-complicated turn in schedule. Half of the assignments are just filler. Video lectures, 2 HW discussions, Pre lab, Pre lab lecture, Lab, Post lab, Prequiz, Module quiz, Survey. Also don't bother with the study guide, they won't help. Take this with someone else.
too much work for absolutely nothing, never take this class with her and she doesn't round up grades 89.9 is a B
Jaimie is a very nice and caring instructor. She truly wants the best for you. Class is difficult but interesting. Very content heavy, new concept every week. Drops lowest scores on most assignments. 3 midterms. One extra credit assignment. Textbook is dense. Don't fall behind at all. Study the homework questions for midterms. Choose Jaimie :)
I think 5 people passed in total. There is ALOT of work. Reading quiz, discussion post, lecture quiz, lab quiz, pre-lab quiz, lecture homework and post-lab quiz due every week, not to mention study for exams on top of that. Her study guides were all definition based but exams are not. Lecture videos are the same as her in person lecture. Goodluck
Although there is a lot of work to do in this class, the exams are easy if you prepare for them. I really like Jaimie and would take her again. The class material was interesting and labs are done in groups.
Jaimie is a nice professor and is funny, but the amount of work is excessive for a 4 credit intro class. ~10 assignments per week, with midterms on weekends every other week on top. Drops lowest grade of everything which is nice. Study guides don't match readings or exams well. Overall, she isn't a bad professor, others in the section are worse.
She is a great person, but she is not great as a professor. When there were exams, the class averages were below 44%. Even with the study guide, it felt unfair. She also makes the class purposely harder to prepare you for AP, but even then, the class feels very unfair even outside of the exams...
Jaimie is nice; however, she did not teach this class well. The hybrid version of the class consisted of 7 quizzes per week,3 midterms and 1 final exam (somuchwork). After the first midterm about a quarter of the class dropped. She didn't have a rubric for ANYTHING. If you want this class to engulf your entire life, this is the teacher to take it with
